From the EDITOR
WELCOME TO OUR FESTIVE ISSUE. Well, where did that year go then? Once again it’s time for Christmas shopping and preparations for the festive holidays …. For the last few years, I’ve done most of my Christmas Shopping locally. We are very lucky to have such a wide selection of fabulous retailers to choose from, and what better way to support our local community and businesses? And at the same time, saving myself from crowds of people and the traffic queues of course ! There is a whole host of Christmas Concerts and lovely local events taking place this year and we have enjoyed selecting some gems for you; we’ve packed as many options into our pages as possible; I do hope something takes your fancy! Incidentally, Oxshott and Cobham Music Society are taking bookings for their New Year Concerts; these include Spiritato Baroque Ensemble (UK) as well as, Tyler Hay, Piano. Something lovely to look forward too ? Details within. Finally, we also include a great competition for all you MG enthusiasts out there! A substantial & lovely book about the history of these much loved cars is up for grabs! This really would make a wonderful Christmas Gift. See page 26/7 for that. We look forward to bringing you more local coverage in 2019 and until then, we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year, Until next time,
Ros

WINTER GARDENS BY SELINA BOTHAM
It’s amazing how beautiful the light is in winter and how spectacular the sky seem to be. Having deciduous trees is good in the winter as they shed their leaves in autumn and give you more sky views. They also allow the winter light to get through. Evergreen trees lose leaves all year round, so rather than making less mess they actually continuously make leaf litter. I’m not saying that evergreens should be avoided, but just used carefully. Too many evergreens can be quite depressing in winter but just the right number creates texture and interest all year and a good balance in the winter garden. Trees and bushes can create lovely shapes, and grasses left standing and studded with the seed-heads of perennials, look beautiful as they catch the low winter light. I try to ensure that they can be backlit with the morning or evening sun so that the planting looks just as interesting in winter as it does in summer. There are a few winter must have plants and my personal favourites are cornus for their stem colour,
14 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018
witch hazel for its scented flowers and pretty shape; hellebores for their delightful flowers. I also love the scent of mahonia and winter box and amazing early flowering bulbs which seem to defy all sense and pop heir heads through in the coldest parts of the year! There are so many other winter gems to choose and if they are planted where you will see them daily in the winter then they are especially worthwhile. Although it’s cold outside, getting a breath of fresh air and enjoying the sights and smells of your garden in winter is still really important and, especially as this season can seem very long, having some beauty around you for the winter months can only be a good thing… If you’d like some help with designing you garden and would welcome a winter review or garden re-design then do contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk or take a look at our facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons or follow us on Instagram @designsforallseasons.

GLOW AT RHS WISLEY 1 DECEMBER - 2 JANUARY
Christmas Glow returns to Wisley this winter, offering the chance to explore RHS Garden Wisley after dark and see some of its most iconic features in a whole new light. Following a twinkling trail around the garden, visitors will discover larger-than-life botanical illuminations, and, for the first time, will enjoy atmospheric music to accompany their walk at certain points. Now in its fourth year, the popular event guides visitors around a new route for 2018, taking in locations including the Rock Garden, the Seven Acres lake and the Jellicoe Canal. Jigantics, designers of cultivated illumination, will this year bring a number of brand new blooms to Wisley, including arches of gladioli over the new Wisteria Walk and a bouquet of alliums on Seven Acres. Favourite installations such as the waterliles on the Jellicoe Canal and interactive colour-changing flowers will return to complete the uniquely floral immersive experience. The paved route will take in not only the floral lights, but also a number of Wisley’s most famous and spectacular
trees, bathed in bright colours to showcase their beauty. The magnificent Glasshouse will also be illuminated, where a magical Woodland Realm awaits discovery, with elves, treehouses and Santa’s reindeer all to be found in a beautiful festive display. Look out for sparkling plantfilled baubles hanging from the trees and the towering ‘Christmas tree’ of vibrant poinsettia. Due to popular demand a priority booking system has been introduced for 2018, and all visitors must book a time slot in advance of their visit. MGB
THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY BOOK REVIEW AND COMPETITION An invite to journey down Memory Lane has dropped heavily through my letter box. It is in the expansive and colourful guise of a vast tome entitled “MGB - The Illustrated History!” It took me straight back to my shared ownership of a drop-top MG when I was serving my country as a National Serviceman based at Bomber Command HQ, RAF Wyton, nr Cambridge, with its spectacular display of V-Bombers, Valiants, Victors and Vulcans. My Welsh pal Ed Williams and I, high flyers in our jointly-bought MG, were the envy of the jetsetting crews, and just to add to our eccentricty , in car, we always wore black and shiny top hats when, at weekends, we were outing with undergrads, mainly female. Ah well!!! The reminder of those carefree and madcap days is the pleasurable MGB volume, the fourth edition, from Veloce, the painstaking publishers of automotive books galore. The bulky hardback, a coffee-table spectacular, is not cheap at thirty five quid - but its 256 pages and 260 pictures of the iconic and remarkable fun car are a bargain treat for those of whose affection for the marvellously enjoyable motor is a continuing memory. The author, Jonathan Wood, is the author of more than 30 books on the history of the UK’s motor industry, and he is...deservedly in my opinion... twice the winner of the Guild of Motoring Writers’ Montagu Trophy as well as being awarded similar recognition in America for his handiwork. His co-author, Lionel Burrell was the originator of Classic Car magazine, and, when he is not showing off his 3-litre Bentley, which he has owned for 50 years,he is restoring a rebuild of a 1926 Talbot. They are both committed MG enthusiasts, hence
their unstinting efforts to excite we outsiders from the pedigree frontage of the traditional iconic and bestloved sports car. But back to the Veloce book. It is a treasure. I have not been able to put it down. Its high level is a showpiece and the splendour of the photographs, as well as the recountings, reminiscences and technical detail and data will, I promise, hold any MG enthusiast, or , for that matter, any keen car enthusiast, spellbound. After Ed’s and my demob, he returned to Cardiff and I to my Manchester home town. We agreed he could have our wee treasure. I moved on to a convertible Sunbeam Talbot, then, much later, I progressed to super-car heights with three successive E-Type Jaguars and then a Lamborghini Espada. Was I crazy? Each,in its own showcase way, was a thrill of a wellenvied drive - but I never quite recaptured the total glee of running about the country in our airy MG. After our demob I lost contact with Ed. I wonder if he still parades our draughty wee runner with its hard-on- the-bum seats, ripped-off fabric roof but pleasantly harmonic engine. I am more than happy to share my overwhelming admiration for the splendid book and spread its appeal to what I know would be an appreciative readership. Therefore I, kindness personified, will bless a lucky recipient with a prize copy if they come up with the correct answer to my quiz question:

ELMBRIDGE COUNCIL GRANTED THREE YEAR INJUNCTION
Elmbridge Borough Council has been granted a three year protective injunction banning the setting up of unauthorised encampments and fly-tipping on all identified public land. Following on from the recent three-month injunction granted in August 2018, the High Court today (Thursday 8 November) has extended that injunction for a further three years. The injunction covers all of the Borough’s parks, open spaces and car parks. The injunction prevents any individual from occupying land or depositing waste as well as stopping anyone from entering, or occupying any part of the land for residential purposes, including caravans, mobile homes and vehicles. This has proved a very effective deterrent during the temporary injunction. It will also prevent the Council from having to obtain court orders for the removal of these encampments, which can take several days to obtain, and will authorise High Court enforcement officers to move people on if they take no notice of the injunction order. Failure to do so can result in imprisonment, fines or seizure of assets. The Council evidenced large-scale fly-tipping and the cost of clearing it, damage to gates and barriers, lost parking income and the large increase in the number and size of recent encampments as well as the significant impact on communities living adjacent to each encampment and the loss of community facilities during the summer. Leader of the Council, Cllr Tim Oliver said: “I am delighted that the protective injunction has been extended for three years. This will bring relief to our residents and
30 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018
businesses who have been impacted by the disruption throughout the summer. I would like to thank the Officers and Members of the Council for the hard work and diligence required to bring our case to the High Court. We will now carry on with the work we are doing to review the security of all of our open sites so that our communities can enjoy their surroundings, whilst continuing to closely monitor any illegal activity across the Borough.” Superintendent Andy Rundle said: “We understand the concerns and the impact on local communities in relation to allegations of criminality and anti-social behaviour associated with some of the recent encampments. When there is criminality of any sort, regardless of who is involved, we will respond and take action. “It is important to understand that Police powers are very specific and prescribed and do not cover civil issues, which we know can sometimes be frustrating and confusing for our communities. “However, in relation to recent events, we are now hopeful that with this injunction in place we can respond proactively to the concerns of local residents and reduce the negative impact of unauthorised encampments upon the local community.” 2018 has seen an unprecedented increase in levels of unauthorised encampments in Elmbridge, totalling 27 on public parks and open spaces as well as other recent encampments on private owned land such as Painshill Park. The size of these encampments has also risen dramatically with some encampments being over 60 vehicles in size.

Warm the redcurrant jelly in the microwave & brush all over the lamb. Season and sit the lamb on top of the veg, then pour in the stock. Roast for 1hr, turning the veg halfway through. Ensure the surface of the meat is thoroughly cooked & the juices run clear, then remove from the oven & squeeze the roasted garlic out into the roasting tin. Mix with the veg & roasting juices & transfer to a serving dish. 3. Slice the lamb & arrange on top of the vegetables, drizzling with the roasting juices. Serve with steamed green vegetables & more redcurrant jelly on the side, if liked.
cook’s tip Radishes are a great addition to roasted vegetables as they have a nice pepperiness. You could also add turnips and carrots to the mix, if you like.

ROCKY’S GOLF BONUS FOR HOSPICE
Take one stuntman, a boxer, a handful of snooker players, footballers and actors - and challenge them to a game of golf. Result: a cash bonus for the one good cause they all support – Princess Alice Hospice. Stuntman Rocky Taylor - the Cobham-based veteran of scores of movies - hosted a day of golf followed by dinner and entertainment at Burhill Golf Club. The day was enjoyed by former world champion boxer John Conteh, snooker stars Steve Davis, John Virgo and Ireland’s Patsy Fagan, as well as former England and West Ham footballer Trevor Brooking; QPR and Arsenal footballer Terry Mancini and A Touch Of Frost actor John Lyons. During the evening fundraising dinner, at which comedian Kev Orkian brought the house down, an auction helped top up the funds – with items including a golfing voucher for four from Irish pro golfer John O’Leary and a signed album by actor/singer Jess Conrad. Rocky called by the Hospice with John Virgo (former professional snooker player, co-host of BBC’s Big Break,
and commentator for BBC snooker coverage) to hand over the £3,615 raised by the event held in August. The golf and dinner is now in its third very successful year. To date Rocky and his fellow golfers have raised around £12,000 for the Hospice. Tim Iredale, Princess Alice Senior Partnerships Fundraiser said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that Rocky and Burhill Golf Club chose to support the Hospice with this marvellous golf day for a third year in a row. It’s wonderful that all involved can have a brilliant day out on the course in the knowledge that they are also helping to support such a worthy cause. “This funding is vital for us to be able to provide palliative end of life care and bereavement support across such a wide area.” Rocky was especially grateful to Farrants of Cobham for supplying the 80 goodie bags for the players on the day; with extra thanks to organisers Paul and Anita Jones. Next year Rocky will be auctioning signed copies of his upcoming autobiography Jump, Rocky, Jump at the event pencilled in for 16 August.
