THE GOOD EARTH REVIEW

POLITICS MATTERS CROSSWORD RECYCLE YOUR FURNITURE WHAT’S ON IN ESHER MUSIC MATTERS

From the Editor

Welcome to Look Local in Esher & Claygate! Yes we’ve renamed your local magazine to match the other publications in our group. Look Local has been successfully running in Cobham and Bookham for the past nine years so we felt it was time to strengthen our brand and share our well loved, and well known Look Local name with you all. Everything else is still the same: we will just have more features and local information for you to enjoy. Our Look Local magazines reach 28, 000 households locally, ten times a year, 7000 of which are right here in Esher & Claygate. We reach more households, more often, then other local publications. On another note … We have some great features for you to enjoy this month and a wonderful story from local lady, Lisa Parsley, about the very dramatic arrival of her third beautiful baby, Rocco. He was born with a major heart condition and Lisa bravely tells her story and of how reflexology helped her through a very stressful time. Thank you Lisa for sharing this with us. Ted, our roving reporter, recently enjoyed dinner at The Good Earth, a well-known and well respected local Chinese Resturant, right in the middle of town. I’m sure you’ve seen it. But could Ted operate his chopsticks? Take a look inside and find out! We also welcome a contribution from our local MP, Mr Dominic Raab. If you use the local train services, you will be interested to hear his thoughts I’m sure. Did you know there is a fantastic local charity who ‘up cycle’ unwanted and used furniture? See our feature about the Woking Community Furniture Project. What a great idea this is!

Finally, do remember it’s Mothers Day on 15th March!

As the Sonographer took my hand I knew by the look on her face something was terribly wrong with our baby. I had gone along to my 20 week scan in October 2013, feeling relaxed, unaware my world was about to turn upside down in an instant. As the Sonographer left the room to get a more senior colleague, I remember shaking and the room beginning to spin. As they scanned over the baby I could see them focussing and concentrating very hard on something. She went on to say that it appeared our baby had a major heart defect. I tried not to cry but it was hopeless. Heart defect? Surely if there’s a problem with the heart there was no hope; after all it’s the heart that keeps our bodies alive. Questions, confusion, worry, every emotion just flooded in. We were ushered to the ‘quiet room’. ‘Transposition

of the Great Arteries’. This very grand and scientific sounding name just threw me even more into a panic. Suddenly my world shattered into pieces. I look back now and realise how naive I was in assuming, or rather hoping, that all would be well with our third child. Once everything was confirmed, all whilst desperately hoping there was a huge mistake, we began to understand the baby’s condition and realise what we were dealing with. Firstly, the condition had been picked up prior to birth which as much as the rest of the pregnancy for us was going to be very traumatic, for the baby it was the best scenario possible. Secondly, the condition was treatable or ‘fixable’ as they explained, even though it would mean that our little one would require an

invasive procedure would be needed straight after birth followed by open heart surgery for the switch at a few days old. The key however was we knew and I felt incredibly thankful for that. Over the coming weeks, as the news began to sink in, we had to carry on as normal for our two older children aged seven and four. I thank God that we had them and the constant distraction. It was when it was quiet and I was alone that I feared for my unborn little one. I couldn’t get it out of my head that it must have been something I had done that resulted

A friend suggested trying reflexology to help overcome my worries so I thought i would give it a try. For five weeks prior to my induction date, I saw the most amazing reflexologist, Deborah Morris, who is based in Molesey. She is experienced in maternity reflexology so I knew I was in safe hands. I believe that, as a result of the sessions I had with her, my mind became clear and enabled me to focus on what was to be one of the biggest hurdles a parent can face. Each treatment she gave me focussed on how I was feeling emotionally as well as physically and it certainly

in this heart defect. I still to this day wonder why, but I am reassured that the development of the heart is extremely complex and in this instance where the arteries should have switched across one another they simply didn’t. The weeks were busy, together with frequent medical appointments at University College Hospital in London where the plan was for the baby to be delivered and would then be transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital. I had an amazing Consultant Dr Robert Yates. Dr Yates was always very clear and I believed in everything he said. I had no choice, I had to believe he and his team would make our precious baby better. As it came closer to the scheduled date for induction, I began to feel anxious about what lay ahead for us as a family. I felt the control I had over my life was being ripped away. The anxiety began to flood in.

brought out positivity as opposed to the negativity that I had been feeling. I felt calmer as a person and this feeling increased after every session. Saturday 22nd February 2014, was bright & sunny. We had a family day: little did I know it was to be the last as a family of four forever. It was a normal Saturday for us until 7pm when my waters broke. This was the worst possible scenario and what I feared most. I knew that for the baby’s sake we needed to get to UCH in London to the specialist team that dealt with the “heart” babies. My previous labours had been extremely quick, so I knew it was likely this one would follow suit. Suddenly Esher to London felt a million miles away. As my husband called the ambulance I stayed calm. Anyone who knows me, would know only too well that this is not in my character! I am renowned for panicking and fly off the handle at the touch of a button.

Continued over...

However, something within me took over. I realised it was time to remember how calm and relaxed I had felt after my reflexology treatments and I needed to focus on this so it would give me the strength to deal with the nightmare head on. As two ambulances in convoy, one for me, one for the baby, made the mad dash up to London, I said nothing. I sat as still as a statue keeping every emotion frozen. The paramedics asked me constantly if I was in labour and I simply nodded knowing full well that this baby was going to enter this world any minute. I should probably have won an Oscar for the performance I displayed, but my mind was so focused on what lay ahead I knew I had to keep it together.

wake up, that we could really meet him. Up until that point we hadn’t even seen his eye colour and all his features and it was then that we felt we could name him. I was determined to give him a slightly ‘different’ name, considering all he had been through in his first few days of life. I wanted to give him a name that reflected this. A poll went around the Flamingo Ward Intensive Care Nurses and it was agreed, much to our older two’s delight, that their baby brother would be called Rocco Christopher. ‘Rocco’ after the saint of health and who after all was our little fighter, miracle baby, and ‘Christopher’ after my youngest brother. He’s our true miracle. Seeing him now you would

We made it to the hospital and out popped an 8lb 3oz, very blue in colour and much sicker than expected, little boy. As soon as he was born he was whisked off. My own heart broke at this point. I had just given birth and my baby was gone, moved up to intensive care, wired up to machines to keep him alive. Never did we predict what a rollercoaster the time we spent prior to the operation would be. Twice we nearly lost him but he hung in there. It was then on Friday 28th February 2014, at six days old and so very tiny, that he underwent his open heart surgery. The six hours we waited for him to return to his incubator were just the longest and most horrendous ever. I went over and over the fact in my head that they were “fixing his heart and making him better”. The call then came (17minutes earlier than expected!) to say he had made it through the operation: it was a success and we would be able to see him. It wasn’t until after the operation, as he began to

never know how gravely sick he was. He’s happy, smiley and all he really wants to do is run around after his brothers! I look back now and wonder how I got through what we did. It was so traumatic in every sense possible. I could not have done it without my amazing family and friends, but reflexology without doubt gave me the inner strength and well-being to take every day as it came. Rocco will have to have lifetime checks but we have been told he is officially ‘fixed’ and to treat him just like a normal baby. We laugh to ourselves now that being the youngest of three boys he will love to show off his ‘war wounds’ on his chest as he gets older. Lisa Parsley - Jan 2015

t was the perfect time for tea at Elmbridge Borough Council on Monday afternoon as girls from the 2nd Hinchley Wood Brownie Unit returned to the Civic Centre to host tea for people from local Centres for the Community. The girls are no strangers to the Civic Centre. The troop helped curate Elmbridge Museum’s current exhibition in the Council’s reception which celebrates the Centenary of the Brownies. Monday’s afternoon tea, served by the Brownies, provided the perfect occasion for them to explain how they got involved in the Museum project and what experience they gained from it. The event was also an

16 Looklocal Magazine - March 2015

ideal opportunity for the girls to work toward their Brownie “Hostess” badge, as well as bringing people of all ages together to celebrate the Brownies’ special anniversary. Cllr Mary Sheldon, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture: “The 2nd Hinchley Wood Brownie Unit have made a valuable contribution to this project. This exhibition is an innovative initiative giving young people the opportunity to contribute to their local heritage and community. It was lovely for the guests from the Community Centres to hear about the benefits and fun they have drawn from the whole experience by coming to the tea party”.

laygate hair stylist Lyndsay, who has worked at Mark Russell Hair Designs on The Parade for 16 years, will soon be offering a rare service at the salon. This February Lyndsay is doing Trevor Sorbie’s course on wigs, covering all aspects of wig styling and maintenance. The course is part of Sorbie’s pioneering new charity mynewhair, set up in partnership with MacMillan Cancer Support to help people with cancer and medical hair loss. The salon’s new owner Karina Bentley is dedicated to providing safe and elegant hair care for everyone, including people with cancer. “My sister experienced cancer-related hair loss a few years ago, so I researched the best options. We offer ColourHerbe hair dyes which are recommended by oncologists, and I’m delighted that Lyndsay is learning such valuable skills to help people feel their best when they need it most.” The mynewhair course will qualify Lyndsay to give specialist advice to clients on wigs, from selecting and purchasing to styling and aftercare. Wigs have a wider appeal than many people realise, and there are very few salons with staff qualified to advise clients who wear them. As well as offering an easy way to change one’s style from day to day, wigs are a great help to people with hair loss. Many post-cancer clients find that a wellchosen wig can give them extra confidence and restore

18 Looklocal Magazine - March 2015

their sense of personal style. Lyndsay’s clients will be able to bring their wigs into the salon to be styled. Lyndsay has an impressive number of styling and colouring courses to her name. In addition to the mynewhair course, Lyndsay is also refreshing her L’Oréal Colour Specialist degree this year and training to become a Kerastase Ambassador, learning about their products and treatments to provide expert individual advice to clients. She will also be doing a couture styling course and a L’Oréal Bridal Hair Up course, adding to her extensive range of qualifications and skills. Another member of the salon team, Jenna, is also doing extra training which will compliment Lyndsay’s wig service. Jenna is the salon’s eyebrow and nail technician, and is preparing for the Brow Perfect course which teaches the application of eyebrow extensions. The Brow Perfect experience adds volume and fills in any gaps in the brows, making it the ideal solution for clients who have lost their hair, or have very fine brows that they would like to enhance. To make an appointment or find out more about the salon’s range of cutting, styling and colouring services for men and women, telephone 01372 466603 or drop in to talk to the team at 12 The Parade, Claygate, Surrey KT10 0NU. THE GOOD EARTH

radiate firstly a welcome when you walk through the door beside the neat cocktail bar and an unwavering level of attention and advice on what and how to eat the goodies on offer. And if, like me, you have yet to master the knack of eating with chopsticks the waiters and waitresses are diplomatically compassionate enough to give you a knife-fork-and-spoon to ensure their pots and plates of mouth-watering delivery are enjoyed to the full without unnecessary and messy spillage from unpractised fingers. Trophy Wife and I have been dining Good Earthwards for 20-years, taking in birthdays, anniversaries and simple nights out, midweek and weekend, lunchtime or dinner, and neither of us can

recall ever having the slightest doubt or complaint about a meal. If all of this sounds far-fetched and an overglorification I apologise for giving the wrong impression - but I would not change or modify a single word.Praise, I say, where praise is due...and I am a hard chap to please.Misery guts, some say. A companion to the varied and reasonably priced food menu is a wine list of rather splendid quality and as a red wine lover on a relentless crusade to clear the world of claret I swing between the French offerings with the Berry’s Good Ordinary Bordeaux at £26, the Fleurie at £38 or the Chateau-neuf-duPape at fifty quid. TW’s ,preference, the pleasingly dry and aromatic Pouilly Fume at £36 or Sancerre,£37,regularly follows her pre-din-dins house bubbly at £9.50 a flute. What, I hear you scoff, a bottle of wine each? No! Not all of it swigged over the meal. The staff - many

As for the eats the variety according to your liking for flavours, spicy or not, fish, meat or fowl or even veggie, along with rice or noodles, will be cooked to your preference if you opt to to talk it over with which ever fluent English-speaker who takes your order. n tough financial times, people want to know they’re getting a fair deal. I have been pursuing this for local residents in two ways over the last month or so. First, as a commuting MP living in Thames Ditton, I know the frustration residents feel about overcrowding on South West Trains, as we pay everrising fares. I get on at Esher. I see how crammed the carriages in the morning. The Woking-Waterloo service crams in the largest number of passengers in excess of capacity of any train service in the entire country - a 73% breach of its ceiling. Fares are already some of the most expensive in Europe. But what is particularly hard to justify is the enormous subsidy that Surrey commuters pay – through fares, on top of taxation - for lines across the country. Over the past four years, South West Trains’ passengers coughed up £1 billion to the Government, the largest subsidy to Government coffers of any train operating company. Last month, I secured a debate in Parliament to press the government on three actions. First, the expansion of capacity at Waterloo into the former Eurostar platforms, to allow an increase in carriages to ease overcrowding. Over the longer term, a second

Crossrail line linking south-west London, Surrey and Hertfordshire would alleviate pressure on existing services. Finally, we need proper transparency around the subsidy South West Trains pay the government – and a clearer justification for its scale. Sticking with the unfair allocation of revenue, I also led a cross-party debate on the future of the United Kingdom. I am pleased the Scots voted to stay in the UK, and I am relaxed about further devolution of powers. But, any new deal for Britain must be fair for the whole of Britain. That means bridging the democratic deficit that allows Scottish MPs to vote on English matters, like social care or school reforms, which are now devolved to the Scottish Executive. It also means overhauling the Barnett Formula, used by the UK government to subsidise the devolved administrations. Scottish public services already receive £2,500 more investment per person, each year, than in Elmbridge. If Scots want greater powers to tax and spend, why should the rest of the Union keep subsidising them to the hilt? Given the financial pressures the country still faces, it’s crucial investment is allocated in a transparent and reasonable way. Rest assured, whatever we’re debating, I will keep making the case for a fairer deal for Elmbridge.

A MARRIAGE

OF OLD AND NEW

A

fter finding a new home with scope to create the open-plan living they were looking for, Peter and Tiina Petersons chose Lofts and Extensions to complete their project. The couple loved the area around Esher and were keen to find a period property where they could make their own mark. Behind the attractive 1930s exterior of their detached home lies a wonderful coming together of original features and contemporary open-plan living. Peter was keen to retain the wood panelling in the hallway to remain true to the characteristics of the house. The couple had meetings with several builders but particularly liked the L&E approach and cando attitude. “They reacted very quickly and moved at quite a pace. I liked the way that they would look for solutions rather than seeing problems.” explains Peter.

The couple also went to visit three local properties that L&E were working with: a project completed several years ago; one just finished and one still a work in progress. Everybody they met was delighted with the work and L&E. “It was important to us to see other builds, particularly in similar properties to ours,” says Peter. Once L&E had been appointed, the work started almost as soon as planning permissions were sorted. The speed at which the build was completed was incredible for the size of the project. The extensive re-modelling of the property involved incorporating an integral garage back into the living space, a large extension spanning the width of the building, the complete re-wiring of the house, fitting two bathrooms, reconfiguring the upstairs space, plus the removal of several large, load-bearing walls and the re-siting of the boiler. “They obviously did a great

They were always on-site by 8am and never left before 5pm. The relationship between the client and building team is important and for us it worked very well.” The build went smoothly and was finished in just over three months, exactly to the schedules agreed. Zones are clearly defined within the new room and the Petersons are hugely enjoying their new open-plan lifestyle. “The way the space works is exactly how we planned. It’s been a pleasant surprise just how nice is it to have the house and garden levelled so that the outside really does feel like an extension of the indoor space,” explains Peter. The aspect on to the garden is particularly attractive with huge doors nearly seven metres wide spanning the back of the property. The light also floods in through the three large skylights. Building a new patio was something that the team were able to complete as an additional job whilst they were on site. So, would the Petersons recommend L&E? “We already have!” smiles Peter. “The three important things to us were quality, price and speed and they were good on all of them.”

As once recorded by Queen for a B-Side.... “Oh I Do Love To Be Beside the B Side”

Sadly, the B-Side has now gone the way of so much to do with the Vinyl age. The idea of holding a single or album & studying the cover art or perhaps exploring the lyrics while listening to a record all belong to an era when pop music was the epicentre of youth culture. Sometimes artists would record a couple of minutes of nonsense on the flip side of a highly anticipated A side like Tracey Ullman’s hit ‘They Don’t Know’ was backed by a song entitled ‘The B-Side’ and featured Tracey in a variety of comical monologues, many of which bemoaned the perceived uselessness of B-Sides. Sometimes a bit more respect was exercised and care was taken to record something special. The purchaser would then get a bit more value for their money, getting two songs for the price of one. Notable B-Sides include one of the greatest songs ever, The Beach Boys ‘God Only Knows’ which was the flip of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’; and The Rolling Stones epic ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ was relegated to B-Side status with the A-Side being ‘Honky Tonk Women’. On a few occasions, the B-Side turned out to be the more popular song. Often it was because a radio DJ preferred the B-Side to its A-Side and played it instead. Examples of this include ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor (originally the B-Side of ‘Substitute’), ‘Maggie May’ by Rod Stewart which was originally the flip of ‘Reason To Believe’; and Van Morrison, with his band, Them, recorded ‘Gloria’ as the B-Side to ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ , and on it went. If you still have some vinyl singles lying around, perhaps it might be worth investigating your own B-Sides: you never know what you might find. A voyage of discovery awaits you…

LOW C O S T PRINTING IS HERE....

We have often talked about our ongoing love/ hate relationships we have with inkjet printers, their running costs verses their purchase prices. Yes it is possible to buy a great wireless printer/copier/scanner for £50.00, but if you use it extensively you will find it very costly in the long term due to the cost and capacity of the inkjet cartridges. As a rule of thumb we say if you are replacing your cartridges more frequently that once every two months you have the wrong machine and it will be costing you too much to run. We are pleased to inform you that Epson, the world’s largest inkjet printer manufacturer, have been listening and do have a very viable solution for you. It is called the Ecotank. The Ecotank system is a printer available in two models both with a very large ink cartridge capacitiesin fact enough ink for 4000 mono pages and 6500 colour pages, with the cost of replacement ink cartridges less than £9, yes that’s right £9.00 for 6500 pages - it is a real bargain.

lan Ayckbourn’s comedy Ten Times Table should prove a big draw when it hits the stage in Claygate in April. Written in the 1970s, this timeless classic draws on the playwright’s own experiences of serving on committees to characterise a project doomed to failure. When a group of local worthies decides to put on a pageant based on a somewhat vague event in local history, the Massacre of the Pendon Twelve, there is only one way the celebration can end - in confusion and chaos. With a leftwing schoolteacher and the rightwing wife of the chairman on the committee it is a recipe for war.

The pageant inevitably develops into a rallying point for the opposing factions, culminating in a disastrous and farcical event. The director for Claygate Dramatic Society is Liz Ness, whose last production for the society was JB Priestley’s When We Are Married. She has also appeared in numerous plays herself, including CDS’s much acclaimed recent performances of Arsenic and Old Lace and Calendar Girls. She says: “Many of us have served on a committee at some time and this play has all the elements to make us say ‘never again!‘. There is the pedantic bore, the bossy one, the divisive radical trying to twist things his way, and a chairman desperately

36 Looklocal Magazine - March 2015

trying to keep the peace. And with an elderly, hard of hearing secretary, the minutes could make interesting reading! Ayckbourn’s brilliant script guarantees a riotous evening.” Ten Times Table is at Claygate Village Hall, Church Road, Claygate, KT10 0JP on Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th April at 8pm. Tickets, £10, are available from Monday 16th March from the box office on 01372 466621, annehennings@hotmail.co.uk, or in person from Grosvenor Billinghurst, 2 The Parade, Claygate, between 11am & 12pm on Saturday 4th April & Saturday 11th April, or download a booking form from the CDS website claygatedramaticsociety.co.uk.

DRIVEWAYS

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham discusses driveways Practically speaking a driveway is essential for most homeowners and because you’ll see it several times every day, it is really important that it is well considered and works for you and also enhances your home.

As with all aspects of garden design there are practical and aesthetic considerations and what works for one house and client is not going to be right for another. That said there are a few key points to bear in mind: Create a sense of welcome and entry by emphasising the front door and designing the entrance route so visitors know which way they should go. Especially if the back door or utility door is visible from the drive, the design should lead them toward the front door. With country houses the driveway position can

1

40 Looklocal Magazine - March 2015

have a significant impact on the house, so making sure the driveway commands the best view of the house is also a consideration. Planning and water run-off. Any impermeable paving over 5m will need planning permission unless the water run-off is captured and dealt with in the garden. The surface can be designed to send water into a flowerbed or into a drain that leads to a soak away within the garden. Foundations. Depending on the use, a sub base of 150mm for cars or 200mm for

2 3

lorries will be needed. Surface choice. There are many options: Block paving. This is a relatively inexpensive solution but moss and weeds grow between the blocks and need annual weed killing. It may remind you of a car park Tarmac. This tends to be quite utilitarian but easy to maintain and is a cost effective option that can be enhanced with other materials. Gravel. This is often misused and given a bad press. I find that by using 10mm size it is big enough not to wedge in shoe. If it is well laid it won’t drift into thick lumps and the membrane beneath should never be visible. It makes a comforting ‘crunch’ when walked on and tends to be relatively cheap and can be laid into a plastic honeycomb stabilising system to allow its use on a gently sloping site. Self-binding gravel. Used at National Trust houses, this is a gravel and clay like material that is laid in compacted layers. It can get weedy and is considered messy by some. Resin bound gravel. Aggregate can be ‘glued’

4

down to create a neat and unmoving surface that has texture and is water permeable. Resin bound surfaces are becoming increasingly cost effective as opposed to Resin bonded which are costly. Paving slabs or setts. As long as they are thick enough and well laid with suitable underlay these can be used for driveways. Colour – it is normally best to use a colour that compliments, but is not too similar to your house, so the whole effect is not too big and stark. Plants – plants can be used to create softness and texture as required. An avenue of trees or a rhythmic use of topiary is particularly effective along a lengthy drive. . Trust the French. Oh-La-La.Only they could be daring enough to shape a car featuring a sexy doublebump derriere-like roof. It is the RCZ-R, a curvy eyecatcher, the first model from Peugeot’s Paris-based motorsport HQ, makers of their Le Mans race challengers, and a surefire winner for those amongst us looking for an example of offbeat pleasure. In practical terms the new RCZ-R is the most mighty French car on the planet with a wow of a maximised 1.6-litre engine, a turbo four-cylinder, that roars out 266 bhp and guaranteed to thrill. My test car was pristine white, a glowing reminder to drivers ahead of me and looking into their rearview mirrors, that I was on my way with a tingly growl from the exhaust pipes for them to hear when I’d gone past. This RCZ range-topper,the R, a really impressive face-lifted improvement on the original and a surefire success, combines style with uniqueness and a really welcome

economy of running costs. Peugeot may have been at a standstill for too many years, content to flood the market place with standard and, let’s be honest, boring transport - but not any more judging by the RCZ-R. The “R” could stand for many descriptions...rapid, racy and reeking with refinement.I would settle for refreshing. My week in its company was a joy. Whether I was cavorting around Lake District lanes or on the motorways, both crowded and emptyish, to get me up there, it was good behaviour personified, with obedient responses to whatever I asked of its front drive, both in the teeming wet and the dry. And the sumptuous plush bucket seats, surely the best in the sports

car business, were havens of comfort and security on my 400 miles or so round trip. But it is important to remind oneself that this is strictly a twoseater despite a pair of the tiniest rear seats which are hopelessly hardly worth the description and which are useful only for a wee bit of extra luggage storage space certainly not to accommodate even one mini-sized adult, never mind two. Overall, with its sat-nav, directional xenon headlights, automatically folding mirrors and tyre pressure monitors as standard,it is bound to give rivals like the pricier Audi TT a great run for the money. And at £32,000 for the top of the range Peugeot R par excellence, this double-bubble sports coupe is no bum deal. Specification: RCZ-R.Engines 1.6 Petrol or 2.0 Diesel. BHP 266.Top speed 158 mph. Zero-60mph 5.9 seconds. MPG 44.8. Prices 1.6THP 156 Sport £22,100 and 1.6 270R £32,000.
