WELCOME TO OUR NOVEMBER ISSUE. Remember, Remember, the 5th of November! Firework season is upon us! Much to the horror of many of our beloved pets. Is it just me, or have fireworks become much louder these days? Some sound like actual explosions rather than the rockets I remember from my childhood! Or maybe, I’m just getting old! Please be mindful to keep your pets inside during the evenings for a few weeks, and why not turn the TV up for good measure! We are delighted to hear that the Ember Players are taking to the stage again; this time with David Tristram`s comedy “A Bolt From The Blue” which they will perform at The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames, Thursday 15th – Saturday 17th November. A great night out, I’m very sure. Further details within. It’s that time of year when our pages fill with Christmas Fair details and other pre-festive events; we have a good selection for you to choose from, including details of a Santa Fun Run in aid of Princes Alice Hospice, and Surrey Music presents a charity concert extravaganza; ‘A perfect Christmas Night’ This promises to be an amazing evening with over 200 voices to entertain you! See page 16 for more information. This is a very special year for Armistice Remembrance Sunday; the Centenary year. Do take a little time out to remember … I hope you have a good month, until next time, take care…

WILL LIGHTNING STRIKE TWICE ON EMBER PLAYERS?
The Ember Players of Thames Ditton are about to raise the curtain on their 2018/19 season with David Tristram`s comedy “A Bolt From The Blue”. Director Steve Clunn said “Edward Jones is just an ordinary guy, doing ordinary things – if you count scaling towering electricity pylons for a living as ordinary! Then, the day before his 40th birthday, he gets struck by lightning.” What happens next is, quite literally, incredible. It defies logic and the fundamental laws of nature. “It`s is a very funny and quite poignant story,” says Steve. “It sets all the nerves tingling before reaching an extraordinary conclusion.” Actor Richard Lyons (pictured) plays the `electrified` Jones - and he`s hoping to avoid the `Ember Players Curse.` On an opening night, exactly 25 years ago, member Tony Smith (a former Deputy Head of St. George`s College, Weybridge) was playing a leading part in“Nightwatch”. “I was watching a rugby match that afternoon,” he recalls. “Suddenly an electric storm hit – and I was, quite literally, struck by lightning. The
14 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
metal handle of the umbrella I was carrying spat out an enormous, smouldering spark and the thing shot out of my hand. Fortunately for me, I was wearing rubber boots - or I doubt I`d have made it to the opening performance.” A lightning bolt carries twenty to thirty thousand amps of electrical current when it makes contact with the ground. That’s about 2,300 times more electricity than that used to power an average washing machine. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, between 30 and 60 people are struck by lightning each year in Britain and roughly three of those are fatalities. Tony Smith said “I`ve warned Richard not to play golf, use umbrellas or shelter under trees until the show is over…and, if we do get a major storm over the next couple of months, to avoid attending any outside sporting events - especially rugby!” “A Bolt From The Blue” is at The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames from Thursday 15th – Saturday 17th November at 8 p.m. Tickets from: www. ticketsource.co.uk/emberplayers or 07752 655087.

DECADE AT DOGGY DAY CARE FOR D’ARTAGNAN D’Artagnan the Welsh springer spaniel is celebrating 10 years as a canine customer at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care. The Surrey and London business began as a dog walking service on Clapham Common in London in October 2008. Founder Bruce Casalis recognised a gap in the market for busy dog owners and D’Artagnan was his first client. Ten years on, the two are still firm friends! D’Artagnan is now 10½ years old and lives in Wandsworth, London, with his owner Amanda Williams. He attends day care twice a week, when he’s collected in a chauffeur driven doggy bus and taken to the Bruce’s Doggy Day Care 25-acre Cobham site in Surrey. In recognition of his 10 year anniversary, the team has introduced a Bruce’s Doggy Day Care Walk of Fame
(#BrucesWalkofFame) with D’Artagnan as its first honorary member. The sprightly spaniel’s paw has been set in stone for all to see! Amanda Williams, D’Artagnan’s owner, commented: “It’s such an honour and I know he’s very proud. D’Artagnan thoroughly enjoys his time at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care and cannot wait to spend the day with his friends. He loves the socialisation and mental stimulation which has helped keep him active, curious and sociable. And I’m reassured by the wonderful team and safe and supervised environment.” Some fun facts from D’Artagnan’s doggy day care decade: * He’s clocked up 1,000 days * He’s enjoyed 8,000 hrs of play * He’s had 260 baths * He’s consumed 500 treats * He’s drunk 1,300 litres of water * He’s received 2,000 cuddles

WIFI EVERYWHERE EASILY AND CHEAPLY
This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989.
We know how frustrating it can be when your wifi signal is no longer making it to the areas you need it, or maybe the poor signal is causing the internet to run more slowly - maybe it’s the kids bedroom, the conservatory or even the lodge in the garden? Well we may have found an ideal solution for you, using a well-established technology which is found in mobile phone transmitters, repeaters and other grid based connections, the system in question is called Mesh, and it has also been installed in large offices and hotels for many years, but due to cost limitations it hasn’t really become a consumer product….until now The item we are specifically referring to will offer “across the property” wifi connection with minimal installation and setup. The starter kit consists of 3 transmitters, where one unit plugs directly into your router and replaces your existing wifi connection, the other two units (more can be added if required) can be positioned anywhere around the building, providing it can “see” one of the other transmitters. The magic of this system is in the transmitters as they
have two broadcast systems inbuilt, one deals with your conventional wifi signal, the other transmitter is for your “backbone” connection. This uses a different frequency and allows transmitters to share the same wifi, and handle to Passover of traffic as you roam from one transmitter zone to another. Sounds complex, but its all done for you so you don’t need to worry about it The initial configuration is carried out from an app you can download on your smart phone or tablet, where it offers some neat features like parental control - to add time restrictions on specific devices on specific days of the week, or to setup a guest network. The starter packs are available in two models - both packs have 3 repeaters in the kit. The standard model is recommended for properties upto 300 square metres, and the more powerful kit covers upto 600 square metres. Additional devices are available to add to the kit if required. The costs of the kit is £140.00 for the standard kit with the higher powered kit being £205.00. Would be a worthy upgrade to solve any coverage issues before the Christmas rush!
STAFF VACANCY Due to our continuing success we have a vacancy for a Junior member of our sales and support team. REDUCING ISOLATION AMOUNGST THE ELDERLY IN ELMBRIDGE
We are pleased to announce that CHEER, who have been helping to reduce social isolation amongst the over 60s in East Elmbridge for many years, will be expanding their geographical scope to include the whole of Elmbridge from 1st October 2018. Until now befriending services in the borough have been shared with the Visiting Friends service, run by Triangle Community Services, who will be focussing their activities on helping the elderly in the Woking area. We are delighted that we will now have a team of fantastic volunteers working throughout Elmbridge, visiting older people on a one-to-one basis in their homes. We will also continue to inform older people about the many activities available to them in Elmbridge. CHEER will maintain the existing relationships with stakeholders, including community groups, independent living providers and, most importantly our volunteers, to encourage older people to build social connections in the local community. Mark Wilson, Director of Community Integration at Triangle Community Services said: “We’re very pleased
24 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
that CHEER, a well-established charity that shares our values, are taking on our befriending service in Elmbridge. Being based in Elmbridge, with good links to the local community, they are best placed to support volunteers in encouraging the older people they visit to interact with their community - helping reduce loneliness and social isolation. We are working with CHEER to ensure a smooth transition of the service.” Janis Fletcher, Chair of Trustees for CHEER said: “CHEER has been working to improve the lives of older people in East Elmbridge for over 60 years and we are delighted that we are expanding our befriending service to include the whole of the borough. Our clients tell us how much they value the weekly visits from their volunteer friends and the positive impact it has on their lives. Our extended reach will also enable us to increase the social activities we offer to a broader range of older people in Elmbridge.” Please contact Mark Michelmore at CHEER for more information by email manager@cheer-elmbridge.org. uk or phone 01372879321

PETS AND GARDENS BY SELINA BOTHAM
Selina Botham of Desisgns for all Seasons shares a few tips for accomodating the needs of pets within a beautifully designed garden. People love their pets and it’s important that a new garden meets the needs of the whole household. Cats are easy really and don’t effect the garden design except to perhaps include cat mint within the garden. Cats love to roll in and eat this plant. Rabbit runs can be accommodated to the side of a garden, tucked behind a swath of planting. Rabbit cages are best in the side passage way nice and close to the back door so there are fewer excuses from the children for feeding them. Dogs are a bit more challenging and the biggest problem I find is wee on the lawn which creates unsightly patches on your beautiful new lawn! The best solution seems to be to have an area in the garden, which is out of sight, where the dog is trained to relieve itself. This works perfectly but needs a well trained pooch. In two other gardens I have designed a separate gated area of the garden where the dog can be kept
26 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
when the client doesn’t want them roaming round the garden unsupervised. As far as planting design goes, by using tough plants there are no problems created when dogs explore the planting beds. I’m using spiky Roses in one garden to persuade the dog not to venture too close to a steep drop. It is really important that routes around the garden are well designed so the dogs don’t need to charge through planting and I find that if desire lines for people and dogs are catered for the design works well and everyone sticks to the paths. Donna is a very young, stunning tabby & white girl who found herself pregnant after several months of living rough. Before coming into care with her kittens she gave birth in somebody's shed! BMW3 Saloon CAR REVIEW
One of the rewarding treats of for any car enthusiast has to be the highly sophisticated & stylish Paris Motor Show. And it was no different this time around, a showpiece battlefront of car sales. For me, the car of class was the new BMW 3 Saloon. The seventh generation of the brand & bound to continue. Since its launch in 1975, BMW’s most successful model has continuously improved. No wonder more than fifteen million have been sold worldwide. The latest motoring masterpiece, with its revised styling, superb driving dynamics, supreme handling & a host of innovative features, will be up for grabs from March 9, next year. On its captivating debut, in October in Paris, it had a look of quality without a mind-boggling asking price. The company’s 129,932 workers, and especially its inventive brain-box designers & specialised engineers, must be proud of their product. BMW claim the 3 Series saloon, with sales of 15 million, is the heartbeat of the company. The latest design benefits from revised proportions, a longer wheelbase, reduced weight & drag with neat & tidy precise lines that underpin it’s superior driving dynamics & road holding. It also revels in a fresh range of standard options for the clear & precise centre console, as well as safe feel revised leather steering wheels with multi-function buttons and thumb rests. It is taller, longer, roomier and wider than its predecessor. The cabin has been improved to maximise comfort with more leg & headroom for the occupants. Even getting
out has been made easier for rear passengers with the door aperture height increased. Occupants will be joined by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a clever digital operation that responds to the spoken prompt “Hey BMW”. This triggers the new era for the group in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions merely by speaking to it. Wow! The system helps the driver; learns their preferences, is familiar with their favoured settings; seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation facility. “Take me home” you order and it does. You can even give your Personal Assistant a pet name to create individuality. Not only does it obey your command it assists and provides casual rejoinder conversation. Saying “I’m cold” will stir the Assistant to adjust the temperature. Ask it where the nearest petrol station is and, warning you about traffic jams, it will guide you there. The astute updates on the car’s advanced technology allied to BMW’s anxiety to ensure the customer is satisfied they are getting their moneys worth, is a treasure. I don’t want to appear to be assuming the role of a salesman, but I confess I am a fan and would advise a potential buyer : go for it... Specification and choice. BMW320d. Power 190HP. Top speed 149mph. Zero-62mph in 7.1s. Fuel consumption 64.2mpg.Price £33.610. By Ted Macauley

Many of the popular songs that kept up the spirits of our “Tommies” will be featured and the audience encouraged to take part. The programme will combine the tunes of the period, including those composed by Ivor Novello and Jerome Kern, with moving poetry by Valerie Fry. All to be woven into one continuous performance. We hope that this will be a rousing and fitting tribute to those who gave so much. Everyone welcome.

SANTA SETS THE PACE FOR FUN RUNS!
Do as I do: Santa sets the pace in the stunning Painshill landscape
Santa’s cover was blown this week, when he was spotted out and about in pursuit of a great new fun run venue for Princess Alice Hospice in Esher. The red-suited one was pictured on a recce in the spectacular setting of Painshill Park, Cobham – where he traced the 5km route that’s been designed to delight everyone who signs up. Sweeping vistas, magnificent follies and pretty waterside paths make this, what must be the most picturesque fun run route of all, to kick off the 2018 season. We’ve also added a second date to the Bushy Park schedule. This brings to four the number of Royal Park runs – two each in Richmond Park and Bushy Park. There’s a choice of dates spread over four weekends in good time for Christmas. All routes are 5km – you can run, jog, walk or just stroll – alongside the hundreds of fellow Santas expected to turn out to raise much-needed funds for your local Hospice. Runs are scheduled on Saturday 25th November at

Painshill Park; 1st December at Richmond Park and the 9th and 16th December at Bushy Park. Runners can be big or little, on four legs as well as two(!), in teams, or singles and family groups. Entry is £18 for 16s and over, which includes a free Santa Suit; £8 for five- to 15-year-olds which includes a free elf hat. Under-5s are free. Book by 31st October for a 20% discount. “Our festive fundraisers always raise lots of smiles as well as vital funds – it’s inspiring to see the turnout at these popular events,” said Nigel Seymour, Director of Fundraising at the hospice which serves a population of around 1 million in Surrey, SW London and Middlesex. “We rely on fundraising and our community support to generate the £9.9 million we need every year to provide Hospice care free of charge. We are so grateful to each and every fundraiser, as the money raised really does make an enormous difference to the care we can provide at Christmas.” For details and to book, visit pah.org.uk/santafunrun

ESHER LIBRARY
As we approach the winter months we are promoting a selection of books which encourage us to ‘Try something new’. Why not learn a language or how to play a musical instrument, take up knitting, learn how to play bridge or improve your DIY skills? We have a great selection of cookery books so you could experiment with Indian, Italian, Persian, Vegetarian or Vegan cuisine and even discover why people rave about Quinoa!! If ‘The Great British Bake Off’ is inspiring you we have plenty of ‘star bakers’ to choose from. At the time of going to print there are still tickets available for our author event on Wednesday 21 November. As part of Surrey Bodies in the Library Crime Festival Daniel Pembrey will be at Esher Library at 7.30pm sharing his experiences as a crime writer. To book your ticket and for further details about all the events taking place between 29/10/18 and 30/11/18 go to the Surrey website, www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries/newsand-events/special-events-and-competitions/body-in-the-library.
