Welcome to Look Local in September! I do hope you all enjoyed a lovely summer. We are back and feeling refreshed after our little summer break, and while it’s great to have some time out, it’s great to be back as well! September is always a busy busy time: new schools, new adventures, as some of our big children fly the nest and head for university or college or even new jobs. Look Local would like to wish lots of luck to everyone starting a new chapter, and that extends to mums and dads too. Maybe this is a time for a new adventure for you too ! In this issue, we are delighted to include coverage of our sunny visit to Whitley Village Fair, and we thought you might enjoy seeing what went on. This is a delightful little village and a great day was enjoyed by all. We hope you like our photographic coverage of this charming event. The Painshill Pooch Day was a great day out too! If you are a dog lover, this was a must-attend event. The sun shone for this actionpacked day which included fun dog shows, agility exhibitions, waggiest tails and lots of lovely dog-related products too. See our ‘Caught on camera’ K9 photos of the day! Finally in this issue, there is also coverage of the Claygate Run 5, always a really popular local event and this year was no exception. Well done to all who took part! Wishing you all a great month. Until next time, take care,
Ros

Volunteer Esher 2016
Supporting people facing life-threatening illness The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help at home. Practical issues like driving, shopping and getting to hospital for treatment can sometimes be hard to manage, and our volunteers can make a real difference. Weekly visits help build up a relationship with patient and carer, offering respite, company and time to listen to the feelings and concerns serious illness brings. Volunteers, who should be drivers, are invited to join our friendly and supportive team.
Our next volunteer taster sessions run this Autumn. Call Sharon today on 01306 881816 and view our new volunteer videos at wwww.brigittetrust.org

ASK BRUCE:
OLD DOGS & NEW TRICKS
This month, reader Joanna asks can you teach an old dog new tricks? She’s recently re-homed a five-yearold rescue dog (a springer spaniel collie cross) who has settled in well. However, her dog has some bad habits – like chasing joggers and barking at horses – which are proving hard to break. In short, yes it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks, although it’s not as simple or quick as with a puppy who is young and forming new behaviours. With an older dog, you are working in reverse i.e. teaching them to unlearn old behaviours and replace these with new. With changes in certain behaviours, particularly for older dogs, there are two sides. Much like teaching a child, you should clearly show your dog when behaviour is not wanted (for example, a stern no, or training aids such as discs), AND reward behaviour that is wanted (for example, praise and a treat). This combined approach is very powerful for a dog and really works. The annoying habits of Joanna’s rescue dog are quite common in collies or collie crosses. They are superintelligent and need mental stimulation (like doggy day care). They also have a natural instinct to herd which often takes the shape of chasing. However, if you give them a positive outlet for this instinct, such as exercise, agility or chasing a ball, they are very smart and will learn quickly. There’s definitely hope! extensions
& GARDENS Award-winning local garden designer Selina Botham shares her experience of planning an extension.
I
’s an exciting time, designing a new home or extending your existing home. There’s an opportunity to get the accommodation right for you & it can also be a time to think about how you can get the most from the whole plot. The garden will normally be affected by the building work & it’s important to consider the impact early so that the new house & garden work together. It’s a shame, even in a large garden, to end up with a dark dismal corner overlooking a neighbour, or an extension which cuts off the best views of the garden. It makes sense to work out how you will use the garden & how the new living areas will connect with the outside space. If you are planning some large doors or windows, then the view from them can be considered, as well as the aspect for the new rooms. The Edwardians knew a thing or two about natural light: the morning room faced east & the drawing room often faced west & they moved around the house, according to the time of day & season. Now we have central heating & lighting, so natural light might not seem so vital practically. However, light is important for wellbeing and we can certainly consider how our house can be
designed to make the most of natural light. Your new extension might affect the sun in the garden too, & when you are planning the house, you could also consider the best location for a new terrace. There are always practical considerations, such as how you will access the new space. If there are level changes on your plot, this needs very careful planning too. You also have a real opportunity to think about the whole garden, and it may be that the space can be better arranged to achieve what you want. We’ve started our own extension recently & we were anxious to ensure that the new build won’t ruin the garden. Even as we discussed the early ideas for the house with the architect, I had worked out where the best light was & how the extension should work best with the garden. The garden & the best views were key to the decisions that we made about the sizes & positions of the doors and windows (actually even the sizes of the rooms). We placed the new master bedroom & ensuite so that we could enjoy the best views across the plot & where we could enjoy the evening sun. Even I was surprised at how early on we needed to decide on the layout for the garden, as it affected
even those early ideas for the house. If your garden is designed alongside your house, then key decisions can be made together with the architect so that the garden & house connect beautifully & each is designed to compliment and improve the other. The other benefit of having your garden designed at the same time is a financial & environmental one: the house builders can do the digging out & earth moving for the garden whilst they are doing the house & have a digger on site. The builder can even lay the sub base for the new landscaping. This has been invaluable for us & has given the builder room to store materials so that they don’t have to ruin the rest of the garden. Some clients find that it makes sense to build their garden before the extension if the new extension is going to reduce the access to the garden. Carefully protected trees & planting can be growing whilst the build takes place, so that once you are through the mess, you can enjoy house & garden together. If you are considering an extension & want to think about your garden too, do contact Selina 07894 553 202 to discuss your plans or see her website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk and her Facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.

It was a cracker of a Claygate Flower & Village Show and the sun was out for over 5000 visitors. The atmosphere across the showground was merry and lively and the Claygate Tug of War in particular attracted huge cheers. Spurred on by the crowd, the Claygate Village Netball Club confidently retained the Women’s title. The Men’s Tug of War final was won by the Davies Estate Team, who sweated hard to claim the cup. Tim Coffin said: “It was great fun and in our team we had six pulls, so we did amazingly well. I’m shaking through exhaustion and also the fact we won!” The Thames Valley Morris Men were back to entertain the crowds and even showed off their Tug of War prowess! An amazing juggler of swords and fire drew gasps and laughter, and the 1st Claygate Scout and Guide Band set the high standard for the rest of the afternoon’s arena entertainment.

Claygate Primary School Art Club and Rosa Johnson won the prestigious Junior Best Exhibit Cups with their incredible celebrations of the Queen’s 90th birthday, and Rowan Preparatory School’s colourfully patterned ‘Mini Moos’ went down a treat. The Fancy Dress Parade was won by Eleanor Morgan as a wonderful ‘Cat in a Hat’, and Louis won the ‘Best Rescue’ class in the Companion Dog Show, having been found injured and starving on the streets of Bucharest a few months ago. This wonderful village afternoon showcased the warmth and creativity of Claygate with dancing and martial art displays, children’s races, puppet shows, face-painting, classic cars, and all kinds of animals from Shetland Ponies to bees. Mayor Tannia Shipley, who opened the Show, said: “Claygate’s a special village with a strong community. The Show has an amazing number of volunteers, who are absolutely priceless!”
Crispy fish butties WITH DILL MAYONNAISE
Preparation:15 mins Cooking:10mins Total: 25 mins - Serves: 4 Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp plain flour • 2 tsp sweet smoked paprika • 2 medium essential Waitrose Free Range Eggs, beaten • 150g pack Cooks’ Ingredients Panko Breadcrumbs • 4 Waitrose Skinless & Boneless Cod Fillet, cut into 12 even-sized strips • Vegetable oil, for frying • 4 tbsp mayonnaise • 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill • 4 cornichons, finely chopped • 4 Waitrose Stonebaked Paysan Rustica Rolls • 100g radishes, thinly sliced • ½ x 90g pack Waitrose Wild Rocket
METHOD Stir together the flour and paprika. Place the seasoned flour, eggs and breadcrumbs separately into 3 shallow bowls. Dust the fish with the flour, shaking off any excess, then dip into the egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the fish, in batches if necessary, for 3–4 minutes on each side until crisp, golden and cooked through. Drain on paper towel. Meanwhile, stir together the mayonnaise, dill and cornichons. Split the bread rolls in half and spread the bases with the dill mayonnaise. Divide the crispy fish pieces between the rolls, and top with the radishes and rocket. Place the top of the bun on and serve the butties warm with a lemon wedge on the side. -
COOK’S TIP
If you want to serve these as a starter or lighter meal, simply leave out the bread rolls and serve them on their own with salad leaves dressed with the dill mayonnaise.

M O D E R N FAMILY LIVING
Combining the period details of their Victorian house with the need for a more practical space has created a warm, family home with a modern edge for Stuart, Charlotte and their daughters. The family bought their home in Twickenham a few years ago and loved the location that allows them a short walk across Twickenham green to drop the children at school each morning. “It’s such a great start to the day and means we’ve got to know other local families really well,” explains Stuart. However, although the positioning of their home worked for them, the internal space wasn’t quite so practical for a growing family, so Stuart and Charlotte started thinking about how it could be improved. After seeing the transformation that their brother and sister-in-law’s house underwent at the hands of L&E (Lofts and Extensions), the couple decided to work with the company on a full refurbishment of their home. “We’d seen L&E around for a long time before we started the build and we’d seen lots of their articles in local magazines, which helped to reassure us. The work they did on my brother and sister-in-law’s home was pretty impressive so we didn’t get any other builders to quote,” remembers Stuart.
Stuart and Charlotte worked with an architect to understand how best to achieve their vision and L&E helped with the plans to ensure that rather than going for full planning permission, the work was able to be done under permitted development, which made the process much easier. The family moved out when the extensive work began, but visited the property regularly to check on progress and have meetings with the foreman. The project moved forward quickly and Stuart was particularly impressed with the work ethic of the team: “The builders always arrived at 8am – their time-keeping was impeccable.” As well as the rear extension, L&E re-did the existing, rather dated, loft conversion to gain a significant amount of extra square footage creating two gorgeous bedrooms and shower room for their daughters, who have both chosen colourful wallpaper to put their own stamp on their space. On the first floor a laundry room has been added. Although this could be seen as
an extravagant use of space it has really helped the family to function in a more practical way and is something that is becoming an increasingly popular addition to homes. With the quality finish of the work and the stunning details that lift this extension above a bog standard build you might assume that the budget spiralled, as is so often the case with building work. “Not at all,” smiles Stuart. “We spent exactly what we thought we would spend, other than the windows, electrics and IT, which was our choice to upgrade during the works.” So, with the building work already feeling like a distant memory would Stuart and Charlotte recommend L&E to others? “Yes, we would definitely recommend them; the finish, the progress, we are really pleased with what’s been achieved,” says Stuart. The family are feeling so settled in their new home that they can finally add to their family with the arrival of a much-wanted puppy – let’s hope he doesn’t chew the beautiful new kitchen to bits!

ransomware
AND THE
SOLUTION
This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. Ransomware or Cryptolocker Ransomware has been in the limelight for a couple of years now, and it is usually activated by opening an attachment in an email. Once it is activated, all the data files on your PC, back-up drives and connected devices become encrypted either immediately or at some designated time in the future. The user then receives a message stating your data has become encrypted and to call a phone number within x number days to have your data unencrypted, otherwise it will be lost forever. There have been some high-profile cases recently. In January, Lincolnshire Country Council was hit by a ransomware attack; the demand was for one million pounds, and it closed the council for several days. Currently, there are only two ways to get your data back from this attack: 1: To recover your data from an unaffected backup 2: Pay the ransom Just remember: your data is probably more valuable to you than the equipment, and with our Total Care Support Plan, we back up your data to our cloud. We have had some customers who have been subjected to ransomware attacks and we have recovered all their data. In all cases, Action Fraud has been informed. Should you like further information on these issues, or to discuss your own security, please do not hesitate to contact us or Action Fraud. Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk

Rock ‘n’ Pop
CAN HELP WITH: • • • •
music MATTERS While most of us have tended to take rock n’ pop for granted through many decades, I thought this week that it might be worth saluting some of the groundbreaking important evens that shaped not only rock ‘n’ roll, but also our lives….. 1. Amplification was essential in the early days of rock, and a pioneering example was the distortion created by the Kinks’ Dave Davies on You Really Got Me when he took a knife to his amp. Amplifiers also allowed a small number of musicians to entertain many thousands at outdoor events. 2. In 1961, the Shirrelles became the first all-girl group to have a number one with the Carole King classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. 3. Bob Dylan’s historic appearance at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall in 1966 created a huge amount of controversy when he abandoned folk music for rock by plugging in and playing Like A Rolling Stone. The fall-out was incredible. When fans started booing, Dylan simply turned it up. 4. Elivis Presley’s appearance on America’s favourite variety programme, The Ed Sullivan Show, in 1956. To avoid censorship issues, the King was only shown from the waist up and 60 million viewers fell in love with Presley’s rock ‘n’roll fusion of blues and country 5. In 1964, The Beatles found themselves on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a few weeks later, they occupied the top five chart positions in the US... and Beatlemania was born. The fabled four with their eye-catching long hair were unique in that they wrote, sang and played their own material. 6. In 1975, Bob Marley released No Woman, No Cry, his first major hit and one which made him an international star and ambassador for the oppressed. 7. In 1981, MTV was launched and showcased videos, making them as important as the pop single. Now a global brand, it all began with the Buggles video for Video Killed the Radio Star. 8. It was in 1982 that 25 year old Michael Jackson was widely acknowledged as the greatest song and dance man in the world with the release of the biggest selling album of all time, Thriller. Well, there are a few highlights from me but I’m guessing that you’ll have your own special memories to celebrate the vital moments in rock ‘n’ soul !

bmw 7 series CAR REVIEW TTed Macauley test drives the new BMW Series 7 luxor-limo and lets us know what it has to offer...
I
n buying a new car, comparisons are inevitable, unless your loyalty to a specific manufacturer rules out any freshly invasive notions on what brand of motor you fancy. And here, with no favouritism or otherwise to either side and only balanced judgement as my guide, I would edge the Mercedes S-type ahead of the new fifth generation BMW 7 Series in the luxury car class. But that’s personal preference and the volume of contra-feeling was impressively laid on me at, above all places, Trophy Wife’s boutique in Cobham. She was staging a fashion show and I had parked outside the front door an updated, uprated brand new BMW 7 luxor-limo. A gleamer of a Beamer to notice. I was staggered by the number of hubbies funding their wives’ dresses fancies who were impressed by my transport and wanted to know more about it. I had to confess, indeed enthuse, that after a week of varied motoring up and down and all around
the wet UK, motorways and country lanes alike, the flagship newcomer left me with a feeling that here was real value for money. Okay, it does not revel in quite the same style as the more pricey Mercedes, but as a really big and bold and spacious alternative, whether for you or your leggy chauffeur to drive in roomy comfort, it ticks a good few boxes. Its eight-speed automatic transmission smoothly sorts out the best of the V8’S turbo thrust and its considerable muscle in a polished manner without any eyewidening jerkiness. This heavier version with all-wheel drive and long wheel base weighs in at a whopping 47000lbs and is still, I found, among the besthandling fullest-sized luxury cars, thanks to variable ride-settings. And it has a Stop-Go trick facility that automatically brings the car to a halt if you or your chauffeur’s attention has wandered and fails to react to a stopped traffic queue in time. That is only one of the very many sophisticated add-ons, such as a camera

that looks at your hand movements near the screen to set up remotely the infotainment functions to ensure comfort, convenience and safety. Another one I liked, even if it is a little bizarre, was a coffee cup display that popped up on the touch pad if an unsafe level of fatigue was detected in the driver. If you like music on the move, there’s a Bang & Olufsen 16-speaker surround sound - and double display for the passengers in the sprawly back seats, bench or single, as you prefer. Forget the old misgivings about noisy and reluctant diesels, the gutsy BMW’s offering in the 730d is a polished performer, offering high economy and low emissions. It may not have the kerbside ahem of the Mercedes S, but overall, this vastly technologically-advanced battler on the luxury car front is a winner in its own right. A true Beamer.... Specification: My Choice 730d. BHP 265.0-60mph 6.1s. Top speed 155mph. Price £64,530.

Happy Birthday

Buttons and Bow Club in West End, Esher, held a special tea party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
O
n June 6th 2016, forty one members of the Buttons & Bow Club in West End, Esher, held a special Royal Tea Party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. In attendance, we had our own Queen, with committee member June Spires looking very regal, dressed in red & wearing a crown & a royal sash for
the afternoon. Our hall was decorated with Union Jacks, bunting, flags & balloons. Our tables were again in red, white & blue. Members wore the same colours & hats. A special tea was served to all & a royal cake was cut. With this, we raised our glass of wine & stood to toast Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
During the afternoon, we were entertained with music & songs made famous throughout her reign. To end this afternoon, we sang the National Anthem & each member was presented with a commemorative thimble to mark the occasion. If you would like to know more about our very active over 60s club, give Betty a call on 01372 465937

G
us Upton set a new record for the fastest runner this century for the Claygate Country Five. He ran the 5-mile event in an astonishingly fast 26.39 minutes. 350 competitors took part on Sunday 10 July, enjoying the perfect running weather conditions and Claygate’s beautiful countryside. There were runners of all ages and abilities soaking up the atmosphere as they were cheered along the course. Councillor Alex Coomes presented the trophies and congratulated all the runners.
Joanna Shillington, who won the trophy for the fastest female runner in a time of 32.08 minutes, said: “It was the fourth time I tried and the first time I won, so I’m delighted! The event was excellent and really good fun and I was very happy to take part.” Before the start of the Run, a minute’s silence was held in memory of Andrew Wills. Andrew, through AW Law, has sponsored the Run over the last few years. To see the list of winners of each class, as well as full results with individual times, visit www.claygatecountryfive.com
