Auntie Planty tells us all about wildlife gardens

From the Editor Hello Weybridge!

IIt seems that spring has sprung ! And how lovely it is, too. We have an action-packed issue for you this month which I hope you will enjoy. I’ve had a very enjoyable month and have been out and about, visiting a number of local venues. I’m delighted to share my adventures with you here. Our pages include an update on the new Chatterbus service which I am sure will be very well used and welcomed by many in the area. We are also delighted to include two competitions this month! Firstly, the chance to win 2 tickets for Daytona Karting at Sandown Park, suitable for 8 -15 year olds. If you like speed, you’ll love these! Also, a lovely book on motoring around France is up for grabs, a little competition brought to us by Ted Macauley. Good luck to all who enter. As always, there is so much going on in and around Weybridge this month. We hear news from St George’s College and also an exciting refurbishment which is about to take place at The Brooklands Museum. We are delighted to welcome news from The Right Honorable Philip Hammond, our local MP. Add to this our regular features, and I hope you enjoy our April issue. I wish you all a very happy Easter break, Until next time, take Care,

P

reparations for the April 7th launch of Chatterbus, the new community bus service between Weybridge, Cobham & onwards to Leatherhead on Saturdays, are speeding ahead. Timetables, fares & concessions & a detailed route map are available on its website (www. chatterbus.org.uk), and the bus with its eye-catching orange & turquoise livery has been paraded in the Cobham area. Also ready to go are an innovative live information board at Waitrose in Cobham & a smartphone app, Where’s My Bus? Once Chatterbus is up & running, passengers will be able to find its exact position & speed & direction of travel by checking the monitor at the entrance to Waitrose or by downloading Where’s My Bus? Waitrose is the latest organisation to appreciate the need for this service in an area designated ‘transport poor’. Surrey County Council, Elmbridge Borough Council, Chelsea Football Foundation and Cargill & Anchor have already backed the plan. “It’s wonderful to have so much support from the business community for our project,” said Chatterbus committee chairman, Sir Gerald Acher. “They’ve been behind us from the start and it underlines the real need that Chatterbus will satisfy.” Chatterbus services are designated C1 (Monday-

10 Looklocal Magazine - April 2015

TH

Friday) & C2 (Saturdays) on Surrey County Council’s timetables. By way of example, passengers can join C1 at the Ship Hotel in Weybridge at 10.40 & be in Cobham twenty minutes later. That leaves two hours to enjoy Cobham’s shops, cafes, Riverhill area, Painshill Landscape Garden or the new community hub opening in April, before catching the 12.59 bus back. On Saturdays, the C2 service will take passengers all the way from Weybridge to Leatherhead, starting from Brooklands Motor & Aviation Museum and Mercedes Benz World, & taking in Brooklands Retail Park, Painshill, Cobham town centre, Fetcham & Leatherhead Leisure Centre. At Leatherhead, there are onward bus & train connections to Epsom and Dorking. Chatterbus is run by a Community Interest Company (CIC) & is the first community bus in the UK to operate to a published timetable. It was set up in response to the identification of Elmbridge as having inadequate public transport, which has been causing real hardship in some cases. Lack of transport has been limiting access to a wider choice of shopping, entertainment, recreational attractions & sports facilities, as well as opportunities for employment, training and even access to state benefits.

THE BIG STITCH

MOUNT FELIX COMMUNITY TAPESTRY LAUNCHED

SATURDAY

R

iverhouse Arts Centre, in conjunction with RC Sherriff and Elmbridge Borough Council, is undertaking the creation of a huge community tapestry project. The project will involve individuals and groups of all ages throughout the community. The tapestry will commemorate the centenary of the ‘No 2 New Zealand General Hospital’ at Mount Felix in Walton. One hundred years ago, in 1915, this hospital was opened by the New Zealand War Contingent Association to accommodate the increasing number of Kiwi soldiers injured on the battlefields of France during WW1. By the time the hospital closed just 4 years later, the hospital had seen over 27,000 patients, not to mention numerous staff required to keep the hospital running, most of whom had travelled from New Zealand. Although Walton still celebrates its link with New Zealand, from The Wellington Pub to the Remembrance Service held at St Mary’s Church on Anzac Day, the personal stories of the hospital and its inhabitants have been relatively unexplored until now. Working with artist Andrew Crummy (whose design credits include the 104 metre wide Prestonpans Tapestry) and a community of volunteer stitchers, the project will explore the stories behind and create a lasting legacy of the hospital, tracing

a love story that took place on its wards. The project will launch on Anzac Day (25 April) 2015 and will be completed and displayed a year later on Anzac Day 2016. As a part of this project, the Prestonpans Tapestry will be displayed at Riverhouse Arts Centre in October 2015. Riverhouse is currently looking for individuals or teams to stitch the work, which will be broken down into 40 panels of 0.5 square metres for convenience. Riverhouse will provide all the materials and support stitchers and will have a ‘lead stitcher’ on hand to offer technical advice. This work is very much about the communities of both the hospital and Walton, so commitment and enthusiasm are more important than needle skills. The tapestry will be exhibited at Riverhouse in April 2016 and a website and a book will be created as a permanent record of the project. The project will cost in the region of £13,500 and Riverhouse is looking for additional funding and sponsorship, as well as stitchers, researchers and workshop leaders. If you are interested in taking part in this exciting project or if you have any knowledge or background information on the ‘No 2 New Zealand Hospital’ and its inhabitants, please contact mountfelixstitch@gmail.com

The Elmbridge Hundred – A Visual Journey by Astrid McGechan is out now and it is a delight. It is a collection of one hundred photographs depicting Elmbridge life, its countryside and its people. Ten of the images are the winning entries of a photographic competition held for students of Elmbridge’s senior schools.

come. There is always a glass of wine at these events and just take a look at this example of Astrid’s work.

The recorded history of Elmbridge reaches back to Saxon times. A “hundred” is a Saxon word for an administrative unit. Amelebrige featured in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the latest resurrection of the name occurred in 1974 during a local government reorganisation and the establishment of the Borough of Elmbridge.

Saturday 18th April 2o15 - 2.00pm

The book complements The Elmbridge Hundred Community Project which selected one hundred of the most influential residents in the borough’s history. They are all listed in the book. Here is just a handful of these august persons: John Lennon, Alan Turing, Yehudi Menuhin, Robert Clive of India, King Leopold I of Belgium, Queen Victoria, Thomas Wolsey, Malcolm Campbell, E. M. Forster, Henry VIII. Astrid lives locally and exhibits her work in Surrey. It is a beautiful book and the foreword is by Michael Aspel OBE. Astrid will be in Weybridge Books on Saturday 18th April for a book signing event. Do

at Weybridge Books. The Elmbridge Hundred. A Visual Journey. The Booker Prize winner of 2014, The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan, is just out in paperback. If you enjoy literary fiction (literary fiction is a term principally used for certain fictional works that hold literary merit. In other words, they are works that offer deliberate commentary on larger social issues, political issues, or focus on the individual to explore some part of the human condition), then a Booker Prize winner is a book for you! You all know that I’m the only bookseller on the planet that loves the internet. I was a very early adopter of this world-transforming technology. But following the premise that just a little of what you fancy does you good, I highly recommend The Internet is Not The Answer by Andrew Keen. Invented in 1989, there can be no doubt that the web, and the new businesses it has enabled, has altered our lives for ever. But Keen contends that it has been a terrible failure. Here he

Book Voucher to WIN see p35

has written a sharp, controversial and witty polemic, positing that the web has been mostly a disaster for everyone except a tiny group of young privileged white male Silicon Valley multi-millionaires. Rather than making us wealthier, the unregulated digital market is making us all poorer. Rather than generating jobs, it is causing unemployment. Rather than holding our rulers to account, it is creating a brightly lit, radically transparent prison in which everything we do is recorded. Rather than promoting democracy, it is empowering mob rule. And rather than fostering a new renaissance, it is encouraging a culture of distraction, vulgarity and narcissism. So what is to be done? The next twenty-five years are key, Keen explains, because, by 2040, everyone alive will be online. In The Internet is not the Answer, he sets out a five-part solution to the crisis. He says we need to rethink the web, revive government authority, rebuild the value of content, resurrect privacy and, above all, reconceive humanity. The stakes couldn’t be higher, he warns. If we do nothing at all, this new technology and the companies that control it will continue to impoverish us all. Twelve years ago, Alexandra Fuller wrote a memoir about her childhood years in war-torn Rhodesia called Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight. It was a betstseller in its time and we still sell copies today. Now she has published a sequel titled Leaving Before The Rains Come, in which she relates her time living in Zambia and the mountains of Wyoming during a long and tempestuous marriage with Charlie Ross. The

Guardian describes this memoir as wistful, wise and funny. Like most men in cars, I listen to Woman’s Hour on Radio 4. A few weeks ago, I heard Jenni Murray interviewing a young sixteen year old author called Helena Coggan. This young woman has secured a three book deal with the publishers Hodder & Stoughton, and her first novel, The Catalyst, has just been published. Set in a dystopian future world that has been divided into the magically Gifted and the non-magical Ashkind, fifteen year old Rose Elmsworth has earned herself a place alongside her father in the Department, a brutal law-enforcement organisation run by the Gifted to control the Ashkind. But now an old enemy is threatening to start a catastrophic war, and Rose faces a challenging test of her loyalties. Thrilling stuff. Humans have been making lists for even longer than they’ve been writing letters. They are the shorthand for what really matters to us. Lists of hopes, likes and dislikes, rules for living and loving, memories, reminders. Shaun Usher has compiled a beautiful book titled, Lists of Note. These are lists by the famous and not so famous. A list by Jonathan Swift in 1699, Johnny Cash’s list called Kiss June (1. Kiss June. 2. Don’t kiss anybody else!), Things To Worry About and Not Worry About by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Don’t worry about the past. Don’t worry about the future!), A list of Don’ts for Women Bicycle Riders in Chicago 1895 (Don’t Discuss Bloomers with every man you know). I could go on and on…

BROOKLANDS MUSEUM

SECURES HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND INVESTMENT & TO UNDERGO A SIGNIFICANT REDEVELOPMENT

O

ne of the UK’s most historically significant sites for motoring, aviation and engineering is to undergo a major redevelopment to bring to life more of its remarkable history, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, Surrey, has recently received a confirmed grant of £4.681million from HLF for its Brooklands Aircraft Factory & Race Track Revival Project. This project will transform the Museum’s Grade II listed Second World War Wellington Hangar into ‘The Brooklands Aircraft Factory’; build a new annexe (the ‘Flight Shed’) to house more of the Museum’s outstanding collection of historic aircraft; restore the Finishing Straight of the Brooklands Race Track, the world’s first purpose-built motor-racing circuit. Brooklands Museum Director Allan Winn says: “This support from Lottery players is a real vindication of the Museum’s vision of bringing a wartime temporary aircraft assembly building back to life as the only place in the country dedicated to showing how aircraft are designed and built. This unique exhibition – coupled as it is with a new home for our live aircraft, new

workshops and stores, and the restoration of the Finishing Straight of the Race Track to its 1939 appearance – will give visitors of all ages an unmatched immersive and imaginative experience. We are now really looking forward to working with our consultants, contractors and volunteers to turn this fantastic vision into an exciting reality.” The Museum has already been successful in raising over £1.2million to match funding for the project and is currently fundraising for the remaining £775,000. Including preparation and development work already undertaken, the complete cost of the project will be some £7 million, making it the largest endeavour the Museum has ever embarked upon. www.brooklandsmuseum.com The Museum is keen to hear from anyone who worked at the aircraft factories at Brooklands – please contact John Pulford, Head of Collections & Interpretation, on johnpulford@ brooklandsmuseum.com

ll rock musicians want to be part of a band, and at the British School of Rock, we combine expert tuition with the joy of playing in a band alongside your friends. Our classes are structured and disciplined with a maximum of 5 students to each specialist tutor. Each one hour session starts with 45 minutes of intense tuition, then everyone takes off their headphones and, under the tutors’ direction, enjoys 15 minutes of performing with each other in a real live band. It is this opportunity to actually play in a band each week that makes our classes so different - and such fun!

W E Y B R I D G E

An appreciation of music and the ability to play an instrument is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Playing in a band takes that one step further, building essential life-skills including confidence, communication, co-operation, negotiation and, of course, friendship. We run free introductory classes each term to enable potential students to try a class without making any commitment. Both beginners and advanced students are welcome, and they can bring their own instrument or use ours in these introductory sessions. See our website for details

I’m all in favour of boffins tinkering around with plants if they come up with improvements - greater pest resistance or better shape & colour. However, a recent horticultural breakthrough has really made me think.

WILDLIFE R

D

We know that tomatoes and potatoes are in the same genus. Here, botanical Latin gives us the clue - Solanum tuberosum (potato) and S. lycopersicum (tomato). Looking at each individual plant, you can also see that the flowers are very similar, but who in a million years would have thought that some bright spark would have combined these two plants, so that you could harvest tomatoes at one end of a plant, and potatoes at the other. Plant experts have already taken bits of their best vegetable varieties & grafted them onto extremely vigorous-growing root stocks to produce faster growing, stronger, healthier & longer-producing plants than the normal version. That, I thought, was clever enough, until news of the world premier of the TomTato plopped into my email inbox. It seems that this dream plant has taken 15 years in the making, & the proud parents of this wonder-child, Thompson & Morgan, say that gardeners will be able to grow this for themselves ‘very soon’.There has been a lot of angst over genetic engineering, but according to them, there has been no genetic fiddling, as they are both within the same family. Above ground, one TomTato plant is allegedly capable of producing more than 500 sweet cherry tomatoes, while at the

other there will be a ‘nice crop’ (whatever that means) of spuds that can be boiled, mashed, roasted or made into chips. While I was still reeling over this news, I set about finding out how much other tinkering has been done recently to tickle our taste buds. If you thought that limes should be green, now there is a crop from India called the Red Lime, with a deep orangey-red skin with orange flesh, which could make your tequila really sing. As it combines both orange and sour flavours, it could also make an ideal additive for the marmalade maker. Then there’s the Papple, a fruit that arrived from New Zealand last year which tastes like an apple with the skin & texture of a pear. Not long afterwards, M&S introduced the grango, a fruit from Spain that looks like a grape, but tastes of a mango. I’m sure that there are many others, but what do you think of a pluot, a cross between a plum & an apricot, which is more plum than apricot? Or aprium, the other way round? What next? My month... ...a look at the Weybridge property scene by Tim Firth Encouragingly, Surrey was also a very strong performer and recorded price growth of 10 per cent, coming fourth in the overall league table...

As we head towards the busy Spring property market, we have just commissioned some insightful data about house prices in England and Wales* and you will not be surprised to learn that the strongest national price rises were recorded in Greater London, which topped the league table with an incredible increase of 16% from December 2013 to December 2014. Encouragingly, Surrey was also a very strong performer and recorded price growth of 10 per cent, coming fourth in the overall league table behind London at 16 per cent, Oxfordshire at 15 per cent and Hertfordshire at 12 per cent. Surrey, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire all recorded double digit house price growth, topping the county league tables outside of London. Our National Chairman, Nicholas Leeming, commented that ‘the economic recovery remains on track but is still fragile in areas of the country well away from London and the south east. Although there is clear evidence of a slowdown in some parts of Central London, I believe this research shows much to be positive about in 2015.’ Of course, the most significant event that will affect our industry this year has to be the General Election in May. I think it’s fair to assume that there might be a rather ‘wait and see’ approach taken by some potential buyers when they consider whether to move this year. However, this keeps our Landlords and Buy-to-Let investors happy, as the Lettings market continues to flourish. Until the political parties set out their intentions more comprehensively it’s difficult to gauge accurately any trends that will emerge as a result. Please do get in touch if there are any particular areas of property you would be interested to discuss or to read more about: timfirth@jackson-stops.com; alternatively, pop into our office on Queens Road if you are passing, we would be delighted to see you. Wishing you a healthy and successful month ahead.

he end of Britain’s first fixed term parliament is a moment to reflect on our journey to the brink and back since the economic crisis began in 2008, and to look forward to the challenges - and the opportunities - ahead. We are fortunate to live in one of Britain’s most prosperous areas, but even in affluent Surrey, the news that living standards have at last recovered to their 2007 precrisis peak has provided welcome relief for families, as inflation falls to historic lows and millions benefit from raised personal tax allowances. But the job is far from done. Britain’s public sector deficit has halved since 2010, but remains one of the largest in the EU and we must stick to this Government’s long-term economic plan - which sees it falling to zero by 2018 to ensure the recovery is robust. And to hold our own in a global economy, we need to continue raising standards in education and creating millions more apprenticeships, as well as continuing welfare reform to ensure work always pays. Britain has a longterm economic plan, and it’s working; we just need

to stick to it. If the dominant theme nationally has been economic, locally it has been the challenge of managing our environment, whether in the form of debates over planning and development or the constant concern about flooding along the River Thames. Surrey is an area where people want to live and where businesses want to invest. So the pressure for development isn’t going to go away: we must manage it, without killing the goose that lays the golden egg. And on flooding, we have good news, with the current Government having committed additional money that will ensure the Lower Thames flood relief scheme will now be built, bringing permanent relief to thousands of at-risk residents. So all in all, I believe we in Surrey can feel pleased with the way we have weathered the storm, positive about the course we have charted for the future, and confident of our ability to deliver the highly skilled, well-paid jobs that will underpin our prosperity for the next generation. We have the plan - we just need to stick to it!

SKY NEWS ANCHORS TELL WHAT IT’S LIKE BEHIND THE CAMERA TO ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE SIXTH FORMERS

E

arlier this week, the Lower Sixth at St George’s College, Weybridge, were given the opportunity to gain an inside perspective into broadcasting when Sky News’ Eamonn Holmes and Old Georgian and ex-Head Girl of the College, Isabel Webster, revealed the truth behind the camera. Not only did the longest-serving breakfast anchor and a future broadcasting star keep the students entertained, they also revealed the pressures one has to face when relaying devastating newscasts whilst hosting the Sky News’ Breakfast programme, Sunrise. Students were fascinated to learn that a job which appears to be glamorous and exciting is exciting, but also demands long hours, early starts and a lot of standing around in all weathers. This did not deter some of the students, as Eamonn

30 Looklocal Magazine - April 2015

and Isabel inspired some to consider a career in journalism and broadcasting. The talk also made Sixth Formers aware of the value of dedication and commitment in the quest to follow one’s dreams. Eamonn had aspired to be a broadcaster from the age of 11, whilst Isabel had decided on this career after studying Politics and Theology at the University of Bristol and gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism from City University. The lecture was voted as one of the best of the series and thanks go to Eamonn and Isabel who, despite an early morning start at 3.30am, gave their time so willingly to talk to the Sixth Form students.

In this column, I want to share with you news of what could be Surrey’s best-kept secret. A couple of weeks ago, I met up with some very friendly guys who are so dedicated to live music that they founded their own music venue at The Hersham Sports & Social Club, which they call the Surrey Blues Club. The address is 128 Hersham Road, Walton-on -hames, KT12 5QL On the first Friday of the month, Blues fans gather to hear live favourites, such as The Good Old Boys who played there recently,. This band features Nick Simper from the original Deep Purple & Richard Hudson from The Strawbs. Upcoming appearances from The Nigel Bagge Band, the Voodoo Sheiks, Blue Business, the Mike Ross Band, Bitter Blues & Meal Ticket should have The Surrey Blues Club really rockin’. The venue can hold 180 fans, but 60 is a more comfortable number. Entrance is free & the place is airconditioned, with beer at under £3 a pint. It’s great to know that live music is attracting so much attention lately & even better when a venue like the Surrey Blues Club is in our back garden! At the other end of the concert scale, I’ve been working with some local-based chums on what will be a fantastic event on 15th June at the Royal Albert Hall. It’s an evening dedicated to the life & time of one of the last century’s most revered & influential legends, Lead Belly. Artists on the night include Van Morrison, Billy Bragg, Jules Holland, the fantastic Laurence Jones, Eric Burdon, of the Animals fame, Ruby Turner & many more. I’ll be telling the captivating story behind the formidable Lead Belly, in between the stars who’ll be playing the music made famous by Lead Belly. The Starlight Chase charity will benefit from the evening, as they do such an incredible job with their own children’s hospice here in Surrey. For more info and to buy tickets, check out www.leadbellyfest.com Have a great month.

MAYBACH R E V I E W

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE MERCEDES-BENZ MAYBACH S600

I have some heartening news for all those international bankers & tycoons & Premiership footballers who are not so sure as to how to spend their massive multi-million quid bonuses & wages, especially if they have caring concerns for their chauffeurs. It comes in the handsome & hunky shape of an extra special limousine, deemed to stir the longings of those who appreciate luxury on the go and revel in the wherewithal to be able to relax behind their smuglygrinning chauffeur or take over the drive as a matter of self-satisfaction. It is the upcoming Maybach S600, a car Mercedes-Benz reckons will be driven by only a handful of its buyers, which is why they have optimised the back seat comfort zone to a level rarely seen outside the first-class cabin on an international jet plane. It is wonderfully refined & its massive twin-turbo engine is a mere whisper, a haven of peace and quiet for privileged passengers who, enjoying vast legroom & a glass of bubbly from the central console fridge, may raise their silver-plated champagne flutes (provided as standard equipment) in celebration of their good fortune. Ahead of its promised arrival later

this year, Mercedes has vowed the brand spanking new S600, longer than the original long-wheelbase S-class by eight inches, will be the ultimate challenge to the supercar likes of the Audi A8, BMW & Lexus LS. I could not agree more. It is little short of outstanding & as safe as houses - economical, too, for its impressive size. Just to add to the assurance that the chauffeur cannot ruin the atmosphere by talking too loudly over his shoulder to the occupants in the rear seats from the far-off front end, the Maybach has installed what Mercedes call ‘voice amplification’. That’s two microphones housed in the rearview mirror which pick up the driver’s voice & play it back via speakers on the parcel shelf to the passengers, reclining if they choose at 43.5 degrees on seats adjustable through 27 electric motors. Where do all these sublime benefits stop? Not there...for while

they are benefiting from that verbal protection, a gentle breeze of perfumed air from a fragrance called Agarwood from a tree wafts around the cabin. They call this added treat their Air Balance package. “It’s a luminous golden warmth of resin, married with a striking woodiness,” is the rather pretentious promise of makers. And they boast justifiably: ”This is the most refined saloon we have ever built - and the quietest car in the world.” So what about the muscular & mighty motor? It’s a twin-turbo V12 that slickly delivers all you ask of it, though on the trickier, twisty sections of road, you soon realise you are driving a heavy vehicle - 2,335kg - even though the so-called Magic Body Control suspension system evens out the bumpier bits up to 25 mph to save any bubbly spillage. My verdict? It is a five-star performer, stylish & stately, & I honestly cannot imagine what more anybody would want. Specification: Mercedes Maybach S600. Engine 5980cc. 523 bhp. V12 twinturbo.Top speed 155mph. Acceleration 0-62mph 5.0secs. Gears:7-speed automatic. Fuel 24 mpg. Price :Yet to be set, est £165,000.

TIPS

F R O M T H E P L AY G R O U N D

C

hildren are pretty instinctive when it comes to learning new skills. Toddlers learning to walk fall, pick themselves up, fall again and again until they master the skill. They don’t tell themselves “I tried and fell down three times: what will people think of me? I’m a failure and I’ll never learn to walk.” Most of their early learning is done under the guise of ‘play’. So I thought we might take a few tips from the playground this month and see what children have to teach us.

The Swing

Their parent pushes them each time they swing back, but when the pushing stops, the swinging stops! Then they jiggle around in the swing. Stick their legs out. Lean forward. Lean back. Nothing doing. They do it all again and just as they’re about to give up and yell “push me!”, they lurch forward. If you have to wait for each push in life, you might be very frustrated, but once you learn the technique, you can enjoy the process of getting going as much as the ride itself. What areas in your life could use a little push, and in which areas could you take things more into your own hands?

The See-saw

One minute they’re up, legs flailing with excitement or anxiety, the next minute they’re down on the ground, feeling stuck and eager to move again. If they want to move up and their partner isn’t heavy enough to come down, they just have to plant their feet on the ground and give a big push up. The downs in life are to be expected. When you get stuck, take a moment to get present, plant your feet on the ground

 

and focus your energy on that extra push you need. An encouraging ‘come on’ can often help us to give that big push.

The Slide

The first time, it can be scary climbing the ladder, scary stepping over the top and scary on the way down. Then a few seconds of exhilaration and it’s all over - sometimes with a bump at the end. Those few seconds are worth the wait at the foot of the slide for another turn, the climb up the steps to the top – even the bump at the bottom. Before long, they’re going down headfirst and want a bigger slide! If you want to live a thrilling life, be prepared to move out of your comfort zone, put in the effort and notice how you can use the bumps to motivate you to succeed!

Have fun,

Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC

PS – As adults, we forget that learning can be fun. That life can be an adventure. That mistakes are all part of the learning process and don’t need to fill us with shame or embarrassment. If you’d like a hand learning how to enjoy the Game of Life more, call or email me. Coaching with Inspiration!

LADIES LUNCH & FASHION SHOW IN AID OF SAM BEARE HOSPICE

O

n Monday 9 March, a Ladies’ Lunch and Fashion Show with a twist at the Hilton Hotel, Cobham, raised in excess of £6.000 for Sam Beare Hospice. The guests were invited to see if they could spot which of the 18 outfits modelled were from the High Street and which were from local Sam Beare Hospice Shops. On arrival, the Weybridge Morning Rock Choir entertained the 139 ladies who had come along to enjoy a preview of this summer’s clothing range from Debenhams in Walton-on-Thames and bridal wear from Surrey Brides in Weybridge. All ages, shapes and tastes were catered for, and students from Brooklands College provided the hair and make up for all the volunteer models, which this year also included men. No-one guessed correctly where all the outfits came from, so a tie-break question between 2 guests determined Peri Young as the winner of a pair of tickets for Jeeves and Wooster at the New Victoria

Theatre in Woking. “Our audience tells us it is getting bigger and better each year, so thinking caps on as to what we can do in 2016!” said Margaret Watford, who alongside Pam Ling organised the event for the fourth year running. “We are so grateful to everyone who has supported us, and especially to Debenhams, Surrey Brides, the Hilton Hotel, Nigel Greenaway and Connect Live for supplying all the sound and lights, as well as Barclays Bank for match funding,” added Margaret. Community fundraiser Marion Newitt from Woking & Sam Beare Hospices said, “This was the best fashion show to date, and Pam and Margaret can be really proud that all their hard work and enthusiasm once again have ensured the success of this fabulous event. With annual running costs of over £8 million, it is thanks to dedicated people like them that we’re able to continue delivering our end-of-life services when and where they are needed the most throughout our local community.”
