From the Editor

Welcome to Look Local in Weybridge! Yes we’ve renamed your local magazine to match the other publications in our group. Look Local has been successfully running in Cobham and Bookham for over nine years so we felt it was time to strengthen our brand and share our well loved, and well known Look Local name with the good folk of Weybridge! Everything else is still the same: we will just have more features and local information for you to enjoy. Our Look Local magazines reach 28 000 households locally, ten times a year, 7000 of which are right here in Weybridge. We reach more households, more often, than other local publications! On another note, as well as all our regular features … We have some great articles for you to enjoy this month including news on a new local bus service, which will be regularly running between Weybridge and Cobham and back again. It’s a bus service run for the community, by the community. Such a great idea! So watch out for the bright blue Chatterbus! Did you know there is a fantastic local charity who ‘up cycle’ unwanted and used furniture? Find out more about the Woking Community Furniture Project in this issue! What a great idea this is! Finally, do remember it’s Mothers Day on 15th March! Go on, spoil your Mum; I’m sure she deserves a treat! (I do hope my three sons agree!) Until next time, take care… Warmest regards,

pipeline for those who use the bus at several destinations on the route. The Saturday service will also go further on to Fetcham and Leatherhead, making a stop at Leatherhead Leisure Centre. Onward connections to Epsom Hospital and Dorking can be made from here. The new service, which will appear as routes C1 and C2 on SCC timetables, will be provided by a professional public transport operator. Its aims are: affordable transport, with season ticket economies and free offpeak travel for those with senior citizen bus passes; reliability, lack of which has long been the criticism of other services in the area; and information, through the Where’s My Bus app where passengers will be able to find out from their smart phones where the Chatterbus is and its speed of travel. Chatterbus is a completely local initiative, managed by a new Community Interest Company - Cobham

Community Bus CIC - purely for the benefit of the local community. This unique approach to providing a bus service is generously sponsored by Elmbridge Borough Council, Surrey County Council , Chelsea Football Club Foundation, Anchor, and Cargill. Chatterbus is well down the road to launch day. A detailed timetable has been worked up, tested and reworked with the support of Surrey County Council Public Transport team. You can find out the latest news about Chatterbus at www.chatterbus.org.uk, where you can sign up for email newsletters and for Twitter updates. Please spread the word around the local area - the more people know about & use Chatterbus, the more assured its long term future will be. aybe you are moving home or just downsizing and need to dispose of unwanted household items? If you can’t give them away to family or friends, then please think of some alternatives before rushing down to a local tip when you could be doing something more enjoyable with your precious spare time. Surrey has numerous furniture re-use charities that will collect your unwanted furniture, electrical and household items, usually for FREE! Just ring your local charity. Contact Surrey reuse network

www.surreyreusenetwork.org.uk Or you can ring 0800 082 0180. If you live anywhere in the UK outside Surrey, visit

www.frn.org.uk By reusing items in this way you can do your bit to help the environment and reduce landfill! We waste too much. BE AN ECO WARRIOR! Furniture recycle charities will resell your donated items at a fraction of the cost of a new one to anyone on a tight budget. You can pick up some really good bargains too! They are open to all. Perhaps you are an individual or family on hard times and need household items and are strapped for cash. Buying good quality reused items will help make ends meet. If you are receiving benefits or suffering financial

hardship, you can get further big discounts. Under some circumstances items can be given away FREE to those in desperate need or in crisis. If you think you qualify, contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau, or contact me direct at Woking Community Furniture Project

wokingcfp@gmail.com or 01483 750005 Monday to Saturday 0930-5pm. Volunteers are the backbone of most charities who rely heavily on the time and skills of those who help. ARMAND

Cryptocurrency. How Bitcoin And Digital Money Are Challenging The Global Economic Order by Paul Vigna and Michael Casey. The system that governs how money works, with its brokers and middlemen, has stayed roughly the same for centuries. Now there’s an alternative with potentially enormous implications. At the heart of this lie cryptocurrencies, a technology that bypasses the elites and cuts out the gatekeepers. Unlike traditional money they’re peer-to-peer, they don’t have a nationality, they’re digital and democratic. They are also lawless. For the Afghani woman denied a bank account by a repressive society, or any of the world’s 2.5 billion individuals who can’t get a bank account, cryptocurrencies open new possibilities. What would a world without banks or credit cards or even national currencies be like? This is a book about a revolution happening now, a story of human invention, and a guide to the future. The Establishment and How They Get Away With It by Owen Jones. We sold lots of this book in hardback. It’s out in paperback this month. Behind our democracy lurks a powerful but unaccountable network of people who wield massive power and reap huge profits in the process. Owen Jones sets out on a journey into the heart of our Establishment, from the lobbies of Westminster to the newsrooms,

22 Looklocal Magazine - March 2015

boardrooms and trading rooms of Fleet Street and the City. Exposing the revolving doors that link these worlds, and the vested interests that bind them together, Jones shows how, in claiming to work on our behalf, the people at the top are doing precisely the opposite. In fact, they represent the biggest threat to our democracy today - and it is time they were challenged. This is all a bit serious this month. Must be the winter blues. Enough of business, money, politics, greed and power. Let’s eat! Gennaro Contaldo is one of Britain’s best loved and successful Italian chefs. You may have seen him on television in Two Greedy Italians with Antonio Carlucci. He’s just written Slow Cook Italian. Many of the recipes have been inspired by his parents and grandparents. Slow Cooking takes the hard work out of cooking. And this is classic Italian food: roast leg of lamb with baby onions, rich Tyrolean beef goulash, lasagne with slow cooked vegetable ragout, and meringue with zabaglione cream and custard.

Winter blues be gone! The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. This is the much anticipated and extraordinary new novel from the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize winning The Remains of the Day. The Romans have long since departed, and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. A couple, Axl and Beatrice, set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen for years. They expect to face many hazards but they cannot yet foresee how their journey will reveal to them dark and forgotten corners of their love for one another. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, this is Ishiguro’s first novel in a decade. Here are a couple of biographies at opposite ends of our social spectrum. Please Mister Postman by Alan Johnson. In July 1969, Alan Johnson and his young family left West London to start a new life. The Britwell Estate in Slough, apparently notorious among the locals, in fact came as a blessed relief after the tensions of Notting Hill, and the local community welcomed them with open arms. Alan had become a postman the previous year, and in order to support his growing family took on every bit of overtime he could, often working twelvehour shifts six days a week. It was hard work, but not without its compensations - the crafty fag snatched in a country lane, the farmer’s wife offering a hearty breakfast and even the mysterious lady on Glebe Road who appeared daily, topless,

at her window as the postman passed by...Please, Mister Postman paints a vivid picture of England in the 1970s, where no celebration was complete without a Party Seven of Watney’s Red Barrel, smoking was just fine, and Sunday lunchtime was about beer, bingo and cribbage. But as Alan’s life appears to be settling down and his career in the Union of Postal Workers begins to take off, his close-knit family is struck once again by tragedy. Moving, hilarious and unforgettable, Please, Mister Postman is another fine autobiography from the award-winning author of This Boy. The opposite is Charles. The Heart of a King by Catherine Mayer. Poignant, funny and often surprising, the first significant study of the Prince in over a decade reveals a man in sight of happiness yet still driven by anguish and a remarkable belief system, a charitable entrepreneur, activist, agitator and avatar of the Establishment who just as often tilts against it. Based on many interviews with his friends and courtiers, palace insiders and critics, and access to Charles himself during research lasting more than a year, this biography explores the Prince’s philanthropy and his compulsive interventionism, his faith, his political leanings and the philosophy that means when he seeks harmony he sometimes creates controversy. Gripping, at times astonishing, often laugh-outloud, this is a royal biography unlike any other.

Trust the French. Oh-La-La.Only they could be daring enough to shape a car featuring a sexy doublebump derriere-like roof. It is the RCZ-R, a curvy eyecatcher, the first model from Peugeot’s Paris-based motorsport HQ, makers of their Le Mans race challengers, and a surefire winner for those amongst us looking for an example of offbeat pleasure. In practical terms the new RCZ-R is the most mighty French car on the planet with a wow of a maximised 1.6-litre engine, a turbo four-cylinder, that roars out 266 bhp and guaranteed to thrill. My test car was pristine white, a glowing reminder to drivers ahead of me and looking into their rearview mirrors, that I was on my way with a tingly growl from the exhaust pipes for them to hear when I’d gone past. This RCZ range-topper,the R, a really impressive face-lifted improvement on the original and a surefire success, combines style with uniqueness and a really welcome

economy of running costs. Peugeot may have been at a standstill for too many years, content to flood the market place with standard and, let’s be honest, boring transport - but not any more judging by the RCZ-R. The “R” could stand for many descriptions...rapid, racy and reeking with refinement.I would settle for refreshing. My week in its company was a joy. Whether I was cavorting around Lake District lanes or on the motorways, both crowded and emptyish, to get me up there, it was good behaviour personified, with obedient responses to whatever I asked of its front drive, both in the teeming wet and the dry. And the sumptuous plush bucket seats, surely the best in the sports

car business, were havens of comfort and security on my 400 miles or so round trip. But it is important to remind oneself that this is strictly a twoseater despite a pair of the tiniest rear seats which are hopelessly hardly worth the description and which are useful only for a wee bit of extra luggage storage space certainly not to accommodate even one mini-sized adult, never mind two. Overall, with its sat-nav, directional xenon headlights, automatically folding mirrors and tyre pressure monitors as standard,it is bound to give rivals like the pricier Audi TT a great run for the money. And at £32,000 for the top of the range Peugeot R par excellence, this double-bubble sports coupe is no bum deal. Specification: RCZ-R.Engines 1.6 Petrol or 2.0 Diesel. BHP 266.Top speed 158 mph. Zero-60mph 5.9 seconds. MPG 44.8. Prices 1.6THP 156 Sport £22,100 and 1.6 270R £32,000.

Sadly, the B-Side has now gone the way of so much to do with the Vinyl age. The idea of holding a single or album & studying the cover art or perhaps exploring the lyrics while listening to a record all belong to an era when pop music was the epicentre of youth culture. Sometimes artists would record a couple of minutes of nonsense on the flip side of a highly anticipated A side like Tracey Ullman’s hit ‘They Don’t Know’ was backed by a song entitled ‘The B-Side’ and featured Tracey in a variety of comical monologues, many of which bemoaned the perceived uselessness of B-Sides. Sometimes a bit more respect was exercised and care was taken to record something special. The purchaser would then get a bit more value for their money, getting two songs for the price of one. Notable B-Sides include one of the greatest songs ever, The Beach Boys ‘God Only Knows’ which was the flip of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’; and The Rolling Stones epic ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ was relegated to B-Side status with the A-Side being ‘Honky Tonk Women’. On a few occasions, the B-Side turned out to be the more popular song. Often it was because a radio DJ preferred the B-Side to its A-Side and played it instead. Examples of this include ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor (originally the B-Side of ‘Substitute’), ‘Maggie May’ by Rod Stewart which was originally the flip of ‘Reason To Believe’; and Van Morrison, with his band, Them, recorded ‘Gloria’ as the B-Side to ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ , and on it went. If you still have some vinyl singles lying around, perhaps it might be worth investigating your own B-Sides: you never know what you might find. A voyage of discovery awaits you‌

If growing your own vegetables is the latest rock and roll, then going wild in the garden must come in a close second. And I have now found an excellent book is a must-have for anyone with both a garden and a young family.

WILDLIFE R

D

We are becoming increasingly aware of how fragile planet Earth is, and how we mortals need to change some of our selfish ideas to minimize the damage. In the garden alone, if we can maintain a balance of nature, this will cut down (if not eliminate) our need to throw chemicals at every insect pest we find. Frogs and birds control slugs –so if you encourage either or both into your garden, then it’s job done, and without using slug pellets. Ladybird and lacewing larvae are known to feast on aphids – so there’s another job done, or so it would seem. But the question is, how do you encourage these good guys into your garden in the first place? I have found a brilliant way to tell you exactly how it’s done – and the instructions are so clear that a five year old will leap to the task without any persuasion. It’s a brand new book called Wildlife Garden, by horticulturist Martyn Cox, published by Dorling Kindersley for The Royal Horticultural Society. So you see, it comes with all the right labels. Martyn Cox has been growing plants since the age of four, and kept at it right through those teenage years where

E

N

gardening was deemed un-cool. Now he wants to ensure that both of his young children experience the same joy of discovery that he had all those years ago. Wildlife Garden is a collection of Grow It, Make It and Watch It projects, and where things might get a little tricky for small hands, there is a symbol for Ask an Adult for Help. All of them are easy to do and won’t take long. Everything can be set up in the smallest of spaces – even a pot or window box. A list of equipment is given at the start of each chapter, and the instructions are well illustrated and captioned. The language is clear, and where specific plants are recommended, each profile includes sound horticultural advice on how to care for them.. And if you happen to have some wellie boots going spare, then on pages 60 and 61 there are some extremely clever instructions on how to make a nesting place for an owl! Auntie Planty is a qualified horticulturist who offers gardening know-how sessions in your own garden. Catch her on Brooklands Radio every other Friday, at 14.30.

FEELINGS 

NOTHING MORE THAN FEELINGS

F

eelings are not respected in the way thoughts are valued. They’re “just” feelings. And yet, how often are we at the mercy of our feelings? We get angry and throw the baby out with the bathwater. We fall in love and are oblivious to mile-high warning signs about a potentially disastrous relationship. We feel nervous and mess up or pass up big opportunities. In advertising, it is often said that ”People buy on emotion, then justify their decision with facts.” Problems arise because many people don’t know how to handle difficult feelings in a safe way and so they act on them or bury them. But buried feelings can cause a lot of harm, physically and psychologically.

Change your thoughts Biologically we are feeling creatures who think. Dr Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard trained neuroanatomist, says that although many of us believe we are thinking creatures who feel, biologically we are feeling creatures who think. “Your thoughts are created by a tiny group of cells the size of a peanut sitting in the left hemisphere of your brain, and many of us let that little peanut rule our lives. Pay attention to what you’re thinking and then decide if those are thoughts that are creating the kind of life you want to create. If they’re not, then change your thoughts.” She says we run three types of neurocircuitry that think thoughts, stimulate feelings and emotions, and run physiological responses to what we are feeling and thinking. From the moment we think a thought to the moment our blood is clean of the chemistry that it creates takes less than 90 seconds.

38 Looklocal Magazine - March 2015

The 90 Second Rule So technically, we don’t need to feel any unpleasant emotion for more than 90 seconds! Then why do we hang on to our anger? What we are doing is rethinking the thought that is re-stimulating the anger circuit which is restimulating the physiological response. And so we can stay angry for days.

Gaining Inner Peace Dr Bolte Taylor maintains it’s a thought away, it’s a choice, and we need to take responsibility for the thoughts we think and allow ourselves to move into the circuitry that brings us peace. We can ask: Are these things I want to think about? Do I like the way these feel in my body? Do I like what this is attracting to my life? Or not?

Choose well.

PS – My friend told me of a line in a film that goes: “Feelings are like children: you don’t want them driving the car, but you shouldn’t stuff them in the trunk (boot) either.” If you’d like a hand learning how to make your feelings work for you, call or email me. Coaching with Inspiration!

Choosing the right partner to help you design your dream kitchen is important and you will need somebody who will understand your wants, answers all your questions and will hold your hand through every step of the process. That’s exactly what Mr and Mrs Ince of Walton on Thames were looking for when they contacted Wentworth Design in 2014. Mrs Ince told us that they found their new home in Walton on Thames, but the existing kitchen left a lot to be desired, but certainly had potential. After speaking to their architect they sought planning permission for an extension and started thinking about their dream kitchen. After contacting various kitchen suppliers, whom they felt restricted their plans, a friend recommended Wentworth Design, having used them themselves. The Ince’s contacted the Wentworth Design team and talked through their ideas, who then set to work on making up CAD drawings (3D drawings) and made suggestions to provide them with the kitchen of their dreams. In May 2014 the building work began, whilst Wentworth Design and the Ince’s firmed up their kitchen design plans. The kitchen they went for was a handle free Futura Kitchen

in Grey Bordolino and WHITE GLOSS, with Antique Mirror Heavy Sparkle splash backs and Samsung Grey Quartz work tops. Mrs Ince said, ‘we had very definite ideas about what we wanted, and whilst Wentworth Design listened to what we wanted to achieve, they also offered professional advice and ideas. The whole process was very smooth and efficient and the CAD drawings provided really helped us to visualise the spectacular end result. In fact, the only challenge we had was the builders running behind schedule and the installation of the kitchen starting before the building was complete. I was worried that the builders would damage my gorgeous new kitchen units, but everyone was very careful and everything went without a hitch.’ The Ince family are delighted with their new kitchen and you can see why. Mrs Ince told us, ‘We are absolutely thrilled with our new kitchen and love the wood, which was a major requirement of ours.’ She continued, ‘since the all the work has been completed we have had lots of lovely comments on our kitchen from friends and family, and I have recommended the Wentworth Design team to friends that are looking at having new kitchens; I can’t recommend them highly enough.’

Starting your end of tax year planning ASAP! The current tax year will end on the 5 April 2015, so you still have time to sort your tax planning before the year closes, but the best advice is to get it done as soon as possible.

The main areas to make tax efficient investments are Pensions and NISAs.

Pensions

Pensions are one of the most tax efficient investment vehicles, for personal contributions, you will receive 20% tax relief on your contribution. If you a higher or additional rate tax payer you can claim a further 20% or 25% relief respectively via your self assessment.

The maximum annual personal pension contribution that can be made is 100% of your relevant UK earnings (up to a limit of £40,000 gross).

Major changes will come into effect from 6 April 2015, from flexibility on how to draw your benefits to passing on your pension after death to beneficiaries more tax efficiently. New Individual Savings Accounts (NISAs)

The Government also made changes to NISAs from 1 July 2014. The annual allowance increased from £11,880 to £15,000; complete flexibility on amounts contributed to cash or Stocks & Shares, for the first time Stocks & Shares can be transferred into cash and continue to hold its NISA wrapper.

If you have not used your full NISA allowance by 5 April, you will not be able to carry this forward. As of 6 April 2015, the annual NISA allowance will increase up to £15,240.

Alternatives

If you have used your NISA and pension allowances already, there are alternatives open to you that will offer relief to reduce your income tax along with other benefits. Investments such as Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs) and Enterprise Investment Schemes (EISs) offer tax relief but are seen as riskier investments. If you wish to discuss investing monies into an NISA or Pension, please contact Ward Williams Financial Services Ltd on 01932 830664 or email wwfs@wardwilliams.co.uk.
