Welcome to Look Local in September ! I do hope you all enjoyed a lovely summer. We are back and feeling refreshed after our little summer break, and while it’s great to have some time out, it’s great to be back as well! September is always a busy busy time: new schools, new adventures, as some of our big children fly the nest and head for university or college or even new jobs. Look Local would like to wish lots of luck to everyone starting a new chapter, and that extends to mums and dads too. Maybe this is a time for a new adventure for you too ! We enjoyed visiting Whiteley Village Fair in July and thought you might enjoy seeing what went on. What a great day that was! We hope you like our photographs of this charming event which included a great selection of vintage cars, wonderful flowers, musical entertainment and even carriage rides ! Also included in this issue is information from the Weybridge Male Voice Choir regarding their Autumn Concert, which offers a really varied programme this year. Songs from musical shows, spiritual pieces, Welsh hymns, traditional songs and ballads, plus modern numbers too. Phew… sounds like there will be something there for everyone! More information within… And finally, for those of us who can’t resist a pair of puppies’ eyes … why not put a date in your diary and attend the Celia Cross Greyhound Trust Charity Sale? This lovely charity helps so many dogs and this is their main fundraising event of the year, details within. Wishing you all a great month. Until next time, take care,

Weybridge

MALE VOICE CHOIR Autumn concert at the Catholic Church of Christ the Prince of Peace, Portmore Way, Weybridge, KT13 8JD on Saturday 1st October at 8.00pm

After two and a half years in the role, our dynamic young Musical Director Jonathan Kilhams knows all about us... what we sing well, what we don’t do so well, what delights our audiences and (however well we sing it) what doesn’t. His beard is slightly fuller but is not grey yet! And he’s great at finding good arrangements of pieces entirely new to the choir; if no such arrangement exists, he’ll do one himself. And if any piece in rehearsal or early performance is not working for the audience, it’s ruthlessly jettisoned!

So we have lots of new pieces, many of more recent vintage, in our concert programme and our audiences will love them. And doing our recording ‘Long Wey Home’ a few months ago raised our singing quality a notch or two! Of course, a male voice choir performance must always also include some of those well-known male voice standards that audiences love. Add to that the opportunities for some of our top singers to take exciting solo parts in one or two numbers, and it all makes for a very very enjoyable concert performance for everyone.

So you can look forward to Johnny coaxing the very best out of this popular local choir in the wonderful acoustic of this beautiful modern church yet again. As Johnny says ‘What makes a good choir isn’t just down to the choice of repertoire and perfection of musical notes. I believe it is also down to the atmosphere created by its members and their shared love of singing. I have always said that you can tell whether a choir is happy before they have even started to sing. So, a friendly and happy choir is foremost in my vision for the choir.’ Our programme is very varied and designed to be above all entertaining and uplifting, but reflective and moving also. We include songs from musical shows, spirituals, Welsh hymns, traditional songs and ballads plus choral arrangements of popular modern numbers; and because we now have rehearsal tracks to help us learn at home, we can bring in new pieces more quickly than we used to. And with over 50 of us singing together, you get that wonderful solid sound, even in the quiet pieces that only choirs of this size can achieve. When the men of Weybridge Male Voice Choir take to the concert stage, they never fail to entertain. To be one of them looks fun and is fun. Nearly everyone loves the variety of male voice choir singing, with its spine-tingling four part harmonies and great contrasts, from quietly reflective to full-throated choruses. And Weybridge Male Voice Choir are entertaining and accomplished local exponents. Ask anyone who has been to one of our performances. Our special guest performing in the first half of the concert will be Rebecca Lacey, a wonderful young singer and dancer who is well on her way

to a career in musical theatre and has just started her training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, after her time at Heathside School, then at Esher College. Rebecca has performed in many local musicals and musical events, and the highlight in April was being invited to perform at the Mayor of Runnymede’s charity ball in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday where she led the Last Night of the Proms songs.

Our special guests performing in the second half of the concert will be The Chris Winslet Trio, featuring Tony Woods. In June, Chris and his trio were a big hit at Treble Clef ’s concert, delighting the audience with their eclectic jazz programme, so if you loved them at that concert, here’s another chance to see and hear them. So, what a treat in store! Great singing and entertainment from men, young and old, who love singing together and who have fun singing together, a wonderful young local singer just starting on her musical theatre career, and great jazz from a trio who just love playing.

Tickets are bound to be in demand, so make sure to get yours early!! Tickets £10 from 01252 326514 or online at www.weybridgemvc.org.uk A retiring collection will be made for the Sam Beare Hospice, Weybridge

ASK BRUCE:

OLD DOGS & NEW TRICKS

This month, reader Joanna asks can you teach an old dog new tricks? She’s recently re-homed a five-yearold rescue dog (a springer spaniel collie cross) who has settled in well. However, her dog has some bad habits – like chasing joggers and barking at horses – which are proving hard to break. In short, yes it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks, although it’s not as simple or quick as with a puppy who is young and forming new behaviours. With an older dog, you are working in reverse i.e. teaching them to unlearn old behaviours and replace these with new. With changes in certain behaviours, particularly for older dogs, there are two sides. Much like teaching a child, you should clearly show your dog when behaviour is not wanted (for example, a stern no, or training aids such as discs), AND reward behaviour that is wanted (for example, praise and a treat). This combined approach is very powerful for a dog and really works. The annoying habits of Joanna’s rescue dog are quite common in collies or collie crosses. They are superintelligent and need mental stimulation (like doggy day care). They also have a natural instinct to herd which often takes the shape of chasing. However, if you give them a positive outlet for this instinct, such as exercise, agility or chasing a ball, they are very smart and will learn quickly. There’s definitely hope! bmw 7 series CAR REVIEW Ted Macauley test drives the new bmw series 7 luxor-limo and lets us know what it has to offer...

I

n buying a new car, comparisons are inevitable, unless your loyalty to a specific manufacturer rules out any freshly invasive notions on what brand of motor you fancy. And here, with no favouritism or otherwise to either side and only balanced judgement as my guide, I would edge the Mercedes S-type ahead of the new fifth generation BMW 7 Series in the luxury car class. But that’s personal preference and the volume of contra-feeling was impressively laid on me at, above all places, Trophy Wife’s boutique in Cobham. She was staging a fashion show and I had parked outside the front door an updated, uprated brand new BMW 7 luxor-limo. A gleamer of a Beamer to notice. I was staggered by the number of hubbies funding their wives’ dresses fancies who were impressed by my transport and wanted to know more about it. I had to confess, indeed enthuse, that after a week of varied motoring up and down and all around

the wet UK, motorways and country lanes alike, the flagship newcomer left me with a feeling that here was real value for money. Okay, it does not revel in quite the same style as the more pricey Mercedes, but as a really big and bold and spacious alternative, whether for you or your leggy chauffeur to drive in roomy comfort, it ticks a good few boxes. Its eight-speed automatic transmission smoothly sorts out the best of the V8’S turbo thrust and its considerable muscle in a polished manner without any eyewidening jerkiness. This heavier version with all-wheel drive and long wheel base weighs in at a whopping 47000lbs and is still, I found, among the besthandling fullest-sized luxury cars, thanks to variable ride-settings. And it has a Stop-Go trick facility that automatically brings the car to a halt if you or your chauffeur’s attention has wandered and fails to react to a stopped traffic queue in time. That is only one of the very many sophisticated add-ons, such as a camera

24 Looklocal Magazine - September 2016

that looks at your hand movements near the screen to set up remotely the infotainment functions to ensure comfort, convenience and safety. Another one I liked, even if it is a little bizarre, was a coffee cup display that popped up on the touch pad if an unsafe level of fatigue was detected in the driver. If you like music on the move, there’s a Bang & Olufsen 16-speaker surround sound - and double display for the passengers in the sprawly back seats, bench or single, as you prefer. Forget the old misgivings about noisy and reluctant diesels, the gutsy BMW’s offering in the 730d is a polished performer, offering high economy and low emissions. It may not have the kerbside ahem of the Mercedes S, but overall, this vastly technologically-advanced battler on the luxury car front is a winner in its own right. A true Beamer.... Specification: My Choice 730d. BHP 265.0-60mph 6.1s. Top speed 155mph. Price £64,530.

Crispy fish butties WITH DILL MAYONNAISE

Preparation:15 mins Cooking:10mins Total: 25 mins - Serves: 4 Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp plain flour • 2 tsp sweet smoked paprika • 2 medium essential Waitrose Free Range Eggs, beaten • 150g pack Cooks’ Ingredients Panko Breadcrumbs • 4 Waitrose Skinless & Boneless Cod Fillet, cut into 12 even-sized strips • Vegetable oil, for frying • 4 tbsp mayonnaise • 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill • 4 cornichons, finely chopped • 4 Waitrose Stonebaked Paysan Rustica Rolls • 100g radishes, thinly sliced • ½ x 90g pack Waitrose Wild Rocket

METHOD Stir together the flour and paprika. Place the seasoned flour, eggs and breadcrumbs separately into 3 shallow bowls. Dust the fish with the flour, shaking off any excess, then dip into the egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the fish, in batches if necessary, for 3–4 minutes on each side until crisp, golden and cooked through. Drain on paper towel. Meanwhile, stir together the mayonnaise, dill and cornichons. Split the bread rolls in half and spread the bases with the dill mayonnaise. Divide the crispy fish pieces between the rolls, and top with the radishes and rocket. Place the top of the bun on and serve the butties warm with a lemon wedge on the side. -

COOK’S TIP

If you want to serve these as a starter or lighter meal, simply leave out the bread rolls and serve them on their own with salad leaves dressed with the dill mayonnaise.

eureka

MOMENT

It was one of those eureka moments. I recognised the email address, but I hardly dared open it in case the message was gloomy. I needn’t have worried - the news was good, and I felt like a proud parent. I’ll explain....

I

have been a plant agony aunt for more than twenty years, dishing out gardening advice in person, by letter or email. Each week, I receive a bundle of questions from perplexed gardeners who are worried about all sorts of plant problems. John had originally emailed me about a year ago. His was quite a short question. ‘Can you please advise me? I have grown delicious ‘plum’ tomatoes this year, and would like to save some seed from them for sowing next year. Can you please tell me the most effective way of separating the seed from the gel so it can be dried and stored for next year? Now, I have swallowed more tomato seeds than I could possibly count; I have seen tomato plants appearing out of the blue from homemade compost

that has been sprinkled around the garden; I have even seen tomato plants sprouting in the compost heap itself. But I have never tried to save tomato seed – it is a rather messy process, but I know how to do it. You scoop out the seeds, together with their covering gel, and place them in a glass jar, then make up a small solution of washing soda in water (1 part soda to 10 parts water) and cover the seed and gel with an equal amount of this mixture. Label the jar, and place it somewhere warm. After two to three days, a fungal mat should have formed on the top. If not formed within four days, then you’ll have to dump it all and start again! Once this dense mat has formed, tip the jar onto its side and trickle water in slowly. Do not stir, but let the mat float away. Rubbish, germs, disease spores and infertile seed will be in the

mat, and the fertile tomato seeds will remain on the bottom. Rinse these thoroughly through a sieve and dry. This is not as easy as it sounds. They must dry naturally - and one good way (if you are allowed) is to spread them over a mirror, or slightly less fun, space them out on a piece of kitchen roll and leave to dry for a day or two on this paper. When dried out, put into an airtight container and into the fridge. To cut a long story short, this recent email announced the arrival of a healthy crop of tomatoes. I felt so proud, and I immediately asked for a photo. John was as pleased as Punch, and I continued to smile about these new-born tomatoes for days. It was a-l-m-o-s-t as good as having done it myself. By the way, now is a good time to try this for yourself!

I need

a

HERO

Inspiration!

I’m with Bonnie Tyler on that - but not the same kind of hero. I need a hero who’ll inspire me to do my best.

I

need a hero to wake me up when I’m sleeping my way through my life, to shake me up when I’m whingeing to myself that things are hard, or I don’t know how to do something. I need a hero to help me see when I’m settling for less than I’m capable of being. After reading her book, Full Circle, I decided to make Ellen MacArthur my current hero. From sailing alone around Great Britain at the age of 18 to her non-stop solo circumnavigation of the world less than ten years later as she broke the existing world record, Ellen epitomised vision, focus, daring, passion, skill, endurance and expertise. Not only did she have huge courage and determination, she trained until she was super fit, had razor-sharp reflexes to respond to sea, weather and boat conditions and calculate her best course through constantly changing circumstances, she fixed anything that broke on board, from electrical to plumbing, from structural parts of the craft to sails, often while being buffeted around the boat by the waves. She went without sleep, and often food, and still pulled off superhuman feats, such as climbing up the 100’ mast in a stormy sea in the dark when she was aching, exhausted and frightened, and hoisting a sail almost three times her body weight. And when she had the time, in the wake of her achievement, to reflect on her life purpose, she had the courage to step away from the sailing career she loved and embrace her new vision, taking up the challenge of promoting global sustainability and a circular economy. All of us have different beginnings in life, different paths to follow and different destinations to head towards. For

me, the purpose of having a hero isn’t to feel I’m not enough, but to remind me of how much more I can be. So, while I may have missed the boat on single-handed circumnavigation of the earth, I can still challenge myself to do more, to aim higher than I think I can reach and to grab opportunities that I might otherwise have allowed to pass me by. How about you? Who is your hero? And if you don’t currently have one, what might you be doing differently if you did?

Make the most of life!

Supporting people facing life-threatening illness

The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help at home. Practical issues like driving, shopping and getting to hospital for treatment can sometimes be hard to manage, and our volunteers can make a real difference. Weekly visits help build up a relationship with patient and carer, offering respite, company and time to listen to the feelings and concerns serious illness brings. Volunteers, who should be drivers, are invited to join our friendly and supportive team.

While most of us have tended to take rock n’ pop for granted through many decades, I thought this week that it might be worth saluting some of the groundbreaking important evens that shaped not only rock ‘n’ roll, but also our lives….. 1. Amplification was essential in the early days of rock, and a pioneering example was the distortion created by the Kinks’ Dave Davies on You Really Got Me when he took a knife to his amp. Amplifiers also allowed a small number of musicians to entertain many thousands at outdoor events. 2. In 1961, the Shirrelles became the first all-girl group to have a number one with the Carole King classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. 3. Bob Dylan’s historic appearance at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall in 1966 created a huge amount of controversy when he abandoned folk music for rock by plugging in and playing Like A Rolling Stone. The fall-out was incredible. When fans started booing, Dylan simply turned it up. 4. Elivis Presley’s appearance on America’s favourite variety programme, The Ed Sullivan Show, in 1956. To avoid censorship issues, the King was only shown from the waist up and 60 million viewers fell in love with Presley’s rock ‘n’roll fusion of blues and country 5. In 1964, The Beatles found themselves on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a few weeks later, they occupied the top five chart positions in the US... and Beatlemania was born. The fabled four with their eye-catching long hair were unique in that they wrote, sang and played their own material. 6. In 1975, Bob Marley released No Woman, No Cry, his first major hit and one which made him an international star and ambassador for the oppressed. 7. In 1981, MTV was launched and showcased videos, making them as important as the pop single. Now a global brand, it all began with the Buggles video for Video Killed the Radio Star. 8. It was in 1982 that 25 year old Michael Jackson was widely acknowledged as the greatest song and dance man in the world with the release of the biggest selling album of all time, Thriller. Well, there are a few highlights from me but I’m guessing that you’ll have your own special memories to celebrate the vital moments in rock ‘n’ soul !
