FromEDITOR the Welcome to Look Local in April! How lovely it is to feel the spring sunshine and to see the blossom flowering too! Soon time to dust off the lawn mower again I guess! This month we are delighted to bring you coverage of a fantastic celebrity visit to the village! The Grange welcomed their charming patron who officially opened the newly refurbished buildings. It was a wonderful event and the building work has been done very well and so in keeping with the lovely Victorian buildings at The Grange. It really will make a huge difference to the clients and the staff. The local ‘Inner Wheel Club of Bookham and Horsley’ enjoyed a really great afternoon cream tea at The Old Barn Hall. Many visitors went along from all over Surrey and Sussex too! Do take a look at page 24 to find out all about this lovely event. We also include more news on the Bookham Youth Project from Oli Bell. It’s so good to hear about all the work this group are doing and we hope to bring you regular up-dates in future issues. I hope you enjoy your copy of Look Local this month and I wish you all a very restful and Happy Easter. Warmest Regards,

I am delighted to bring this recipe to you while I have my new ‘Kill Sugar Cravings’ and ‘Marvellous Memory’ Dems at the forefront of my mind.It feels slightly mad when you are making it – yes, you put all the pith in from the citrus fruit, but that is all part and parcel of a great, filling, densely nutritious and brain enhancing meal to have in a hurry. It is perfect for the arrival of Spring. Don’t panic about the green powder – but I suggest you go to a good health food store and find one you like the sound of (without sugar). The recipe is inspired by Sarah Wilson – the Queen of quitting sugar addiction, she is brilliant!
INGREDIENTS:
½ grapefruit (including skin) ½ lemon (including skin) ½ green apple 1 cucumber handful of lettuce, rocket or watercress handful of mint or coriander leaves 1 tsp chia seeds 2 tsps green powder (optional) 125-250 ml coconut water handful of ice (optional)
Citrus green
BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE Serves 1-3
METHOD:
1. Toss all the ingredients into a high speed blender, pips and all, and blend for a minute or so adding as much coconut water and ice to get a consistency you like.

Joanna Lumley visits the grange
O
n the 8th March The Grange in Bookham welcomed the ever lovely, Joanna Lumley to open the newly refurbished areas of their beautiful Victorian building. This £440,000 building project has created more places for people with disabilities to attend The Grange and learn valuable skills for life. The new works have provided the following :• A state-of-the-art IT suite called the Karten CTEC Centre • A new room for the fudge mini business • A multi-media arts room with film animation & mug printing • A heritage Room for antique textile collection & royal
letters As well as all this the whole building has been made more accessible with wider corridors, automatic doors and a new lift too! Miss Lumley genuinely seemed to enjoyed her visit; she enthusiastically met lots of the clients as she was shown around the newly refurbished building. She asked all about their various projects and the skills they were learning. What a lovely lady she is and a wonderful patron to this very valuable local charity. Look Local would like to thank everyone at The Grange for inviting us along to join your celebrations on this very special day, we had an Absolutely Fabulous time !

SPECIAL OFFER ASK BRUCE:
TREATING DRY SKIN This month, Look Local reader Ann Highgate asks if supplements are the best thing for her West Highland Terrier’s very dry skin. Supplements are important and work wonders for all kinds of doggy ailments, but it’s best to first check if there is are any underlying issues. Your dog’s dry skin could be due to a change in diet, or something missing in his diet, or maybe even an allergy. I would strongly recommend you visit your vet in the first instance to rule out any medical issues. If you do discover your dog’s dry skin is not medically or dietary related, then by all means give supplements a go. There are many on the market including Lintbells, which has a special Itchy Dog range for doggy dry coats and skin. Omega oils are a key ingredient; and these can also be found in oily fish such as salmon, sardines and tuna. So perhaps introduce some fishy treats each day for your dog which no doubt he’ll love! Regularly brushing your dog’s coat will also help. Not only does it remove dead hair, it also distributes the natural oils found in his coat which will moisturise and nourish the skin too. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Bookham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce about? Send your questions to :-

Inner Wheel Club of Bookham
ladies tea-party
T
he Inner Wheel Club of Bookham & Horsley had a record turn-out of ladies to this annual event in the Old Barn Hall with about 125 sitting down to tables laden with tiered cake stands, plates of cream and jam scones and a variety of tea-breads. There was a well patronised home-made card stall and a knitted goods stall both for sale and for sending to those in need, both home and abroad.. The raffle raised over £450 thanks to our guests’ generosity. The charity we were supporting was Mary’s Meals, a Scottish charity whose aim is to give a meal a day to school children in deprived parts of the world. It began in a very small way in Malawi and now serves over a million children worldwide. The founder has kept the recipe simple by utilizing the mothers of the children to
24 Looklocal Magazine - April 2017
store, cook and serve the meals in each school. All the ingredients are bought locally so that once the thing is up and running, it is completely self-sufficient, except for the purchase and delivery of the ingredients which is done by agents of the charity in the locality itself. Not being hungry, means that these children can then have the energy to learn and grow properly. How blessed are we in this isle, who have plenty to eat each day and often take it for granted. We are hoping to have raised in the region of £1,300 for this super charity. We would like to thank all our friends in the area who came, gave donations and helped with the event. We also had Inner Wheel members from as far afield as Hove and Seaford, Oxted and Godalming, Hayward’s Heath and Guildford. We sincerely hope that you enjoyed it. love, Jane Bishop, International Organiser.

busier than ever.. So what have the Bookham Residents’ Association been up to these last few months? Web: www.bookhamresidents.org.uk | Tel: 0300 030 9890
I
t would be fair to say busier than ever, bearing in mind the wide range of local activities, responsibilities and often problems that the Association is involved with on behalf of the residents. It may not be widely known that Joint Action Groups (JAGs) have been set up to look at problems and to seek solutions to issues, particularly at Chrystie Rec and the Grove estate. The BRA are closely involved with these groups and hopeful that remedies to issues can be found as quickly as possible. The hard work involved looking after Bookham’s trees continues with more being planted in the village on a regular basis; efforts are also underway with others to try and establish an Urban Tree policy. The War memorials need constant care and skilled restoration is carefully being investigated at the moment. The Poppy Day appeal ran into problems and we are working with the Surrey organisers to get a new set of volunteers to help distribute the poppies. If you are able to help, please let the BRA know - the task is not onerous and no money collection is involved. The monthly litter pick scheme has been very successful and continues to keep Bookham as tidy as possible; 11am on the first Sunday of every month may not be the best time for some, but since the launch in March 2016, over 150 bags have been collected, with nearly 50% qualifying for recycling. Observant residents will have noticed the appearance
36 Looklocal Magazine - April 2017
of a new bench, donated by an anonymous BRA member, which is situated at Lower Shott, adjacent to the village sign commemorating the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee. Those who have noticed the bench may also have spotted the new BRA Notice Board next to the pay machine in the Lower Road car park. The Bookham Residents’ Association continues to have a close link with Surrey Police and discussions often take place with the Commissioner about the future of local Policing. The Transform Leatherhead programme is also a subject that involves liaising with other groups. Drainage problems are unfortunately familiar to some of Bookham’s residents and the key areas are being dealt with as quickly as possible in conjunction with the well established Flood Forum. The BRA are actively involved as a partner with Bookham Colts and the Bookham Sports Association, primarily to help provide funding for improving and safeguarding the Chrystie Rec Pavilion. Whilst mentioning being actively involved, an important part of the BRA’s time is spent working with the MVDC SCC Local Committee and attending their meetings, in order to help get our priorities acted upon. This is just a taste of what your local residents association takes on and it is far from all we have been doing. Ray Pritchard Bookhams Residents’ Association.

Gardening Matters
gardening season As I write, it’s still freezing cold and raining non-stop, but hopefully, April will have kicked off with some better weather. So, the main task is to finish pruning. Prune overgrown shrubs and hedges right back to the size you want, but as always, cut back to a live shoot /leaf bud. Remove wayward and crossing branches too: this will prevent damage caused by rubbing.
F
eed with Growmore afterwards, as the poor things will be in shock. Now’s also the time to prune back forsythia stems after flowering. Not my favourite shrub, as I hate yellow, so go for it. Shorten hardy fuchsias back to a strong shoot and snip out weak and dead stems. If most of the stems are dead, cut the plant down to a few inches. You’ll probably see new shoots emerging at ground level already. Remove any green shoots from variegated shrubs: these reversions will take over and you’ll lose the variegation if not nipped in the bud (tee hee, gardening joke). Resist the temptation to tuck new shoots of wisteria/ivy/ honeysuckle behind convenient drainpipes: the expanding stems will push the pipes off the wall, causing all sorts of aggravation, so take the
trouble to tie the shoots to wires. Now the flower beds. Hoe borders when it’s dry to prevent moisture loss and to keep on top of emerging weed seedlings. Dead-head any spring bulbs which are over, feed with Growmore and leave the foliage for 6 weeks before cutting away, because bulbs make their food for the following year from the dying foliage. Once hellebores have faded, cut out the flower stems to freshen the plants, but leave favourite colours to ripen and shed seed. Dahlia tubers can be planted in well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny spot. The lawn….ah, the lawn. Get on down and repair those ugly little worn spots. Sow seed or swap a bit of turf from somewhere less conspicuous; some granular fertiliser under the turf will get it off to a strong start. Level humps, fill in hollows and aerate the lawn if it’s not too wet, then weed
and feed. Finally, mow. Set the blades high, making sure they’re sharp, rotary mowers included: blunt blades rip the grass and leave rough ends which turn brown, stopping the lawn looking quite so verdant. As the grass starts to grow, lower the blades to your desired summer height. Finally, nip out the leading shoots of fuchsias and pelargoniums in pots to encourage a bushy habit. Place patio containers of lilies in full light, but safe from late frosts and not in baking sun where they’ll race up to flower too soon. Potted exotics, eg agapanthus, can stand outside in the sun now. If you want some pots of foliage to set off flowery containers, slice a generous chunk off a clump of hosta, rootball intact, and pot it up. Plant up pots with summer bedding, and suddenly, the world will be looking a lovelier place.

LOOKING FOR
DOG
LOVERS!
I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.
Would you like a little extra income? Roz Bourne phone: 01372 453047 | 07969 196 227 email :kt@waggingtailsuk.co.uk www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/kt/carer-enquiry
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been listening to the most exciting new talent I’ve heard in a long while. I first saw RAY BLK (a girl who’s name is pronounced Ray Black) on Jools Holland’s superb late night show which has provided the lift-off for so many young new stars. Ray has already warmed the hearts of the BBC’s leading producers and presenters by being the first unsigned artist to ever win the prestigious BBC Music Award. Although most reviewers call her “unique’ or ‘original’ she reminds me of a young Amy Winehouse which I don’t consider to be a bad thing at all. Her deliver and spine- tingly, soulful voice is very earthy with flashes of jazz fused with Hip Hop and I can’t get enough of her. She really is that good and you can’t help but be deeply affected by this rising star. Incidentally, BLK which stands for Building, Living, knowing is Nigerian born Rita Ekwere who grew up in South London. Her debut EP, ‘Havisham’ which was released in2015 was inspired Miss Havisham’s story in Charles Dicken’s Great Expectations and tells the story of a young girl who turns against men after having had her heart broken. The follow-up was out last year and is a mini-album entitled ‘Durt’. It’s life affirming music well worthy of your attention.

i
t’s been a really busy 2017 so far for the Bookham Youth Project. We are now regularly working in local schools, the community, youth centre and the churches engaging with over 50 young people. Thanks to the support of the community the work is growing and more young people than before in Bookham are able to access youth work, to find safe spaces, to learn, to grow, to enjoy, to be free and be happy.
48 Looklocal Magazine - April 2017
Thanks to funding from the Police Crime Commissioner we have been able to employ a youth worker to support and lead some of our community sessions at BYouth. James has been a long-term Volunteer at LYP Leatherhead and has brought great energy and experience to BYouth sessions. We are looking forward to spring and summer and really are excited about what’s in store for young people in Bookham

The Surrey Police Neil Clarke, 13363 Crime Reduction Advisor from the Eastern Division discusses how to contact the police to report any suspicions or cerns that you may have.
C
ontacting Surrey Police to report any suspicions or concerns that you may have can make some people think twice! People question whether they may be contacting police unnecessarily, that their suspicions may be completely unfounded and, quite often, simply don’t want to be a nuisance! Anything that gives you cause for concern, does not feel “quite right” or makes you suspicious should be called in. You can use the non-emergency number, 101, for general calls or, if you actually see something happening at the time you want to call, dial 999. Call handlers are extensively trained to guide you through all of the information that they need to obtain from you, so don’t worry about making that initial telephone contact. They will ask you questions to create a clear and meaningful report. Then the details are assessed in terms of the need for immediate deployment, putting out a message to all officers on duty or patrol to bear a situation in mind or even to pass the information on to the Force Intelligence Unit. You can either give your full contact details or choose to remain anonymous. If the information is recorded for information purposes, possibly linked to other similar reports, you may not receive direct feedback from our call handlers but we really appreciate that you took the trouble to contact us. When trying to describe people, however, it can be helpful to consider the wide range of information that
50 Looklocal Magazine - April 2017
may be helpful in trying to match a description to a potential suspect. It may not always be practical to write things down although, if this is possible, it can be a great help in making sure you remember all the relevant details. Try to make at least a mental note of age, gender, colour, height, plus hair and eye colour (if you are close enough to see). Also, consider what a person is wearing. The type/style of clothing, shoes or hat are worth noting? Are there any visible logos on their clothing that could help to identify them? Did you hear anyone use a name if they spoke or were spoken to? Did you note if anyone spoke with a regional or foreign accent? Other things to consider could be: Any visible scars/marks/ tattoos? Type of shirt, top or jumper and what colour it was? Is their footwear of an easily recognisable make with a well-known brand logo? All of these details can help in getting as accurate a picture of a person as possible. If police officers are tasked to act on reported suspicions and it turns out to be “perfectly innocent” - that’s fine too! It is better to have raised your concerns and have them allayed than worry that you didn’t report something that could be important. You can always contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team direct. Either email to molevalley@surrey.pnn. police.uk or telephone 01483 639886. If you have to leave a message on our voicemail system, we will aim to get back to you within 24 hours.
NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN
James Friend (Leader of MVDC) and Sarah Seed (Executive Member for Planning MVDC) receive a copy of the Bookham Neighbourhood Development Plan from Barbara Matthews (Chair) and accompanying members of the Bookham Vanguard Neighbourhood Forum. Attending, From left to right: Julia Dickinson, Irene Gawne, Roy Allibone, Melanie Haywood, James Friend (Leader of MVDC), Trevor Sokell (Leader of the Bookham Vanguard Task Force), Sarah Seed (Executive Member for Planning, MVDC), Peter Seaward (Chairman, Bookham Residents Association and Leader of Infrastructure for the Bookham Vanguard Task Force), Cathryn Hossack (Secretary and Promotions for the Bookham Vanguard Task Force and Forum), Barbara Matthews (Chair, Bookham Vanguard Forum), John Dwyer, John Howarth, Sheila Ellis, Lucy Botting (MVDC Councillor for Bookham and Forum member).
T
he Bookham Vanguard Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) has officially been passed to Mole Valley District Council. The NDP has been produced by the 50-strong Bookham Vanguard Neighbourhood Forum, who have spent nearly four years gathering evidence, carrying out community consultations and drafting the policies contained in the Plan. The Forum members have put a lot of time and effort into producing a Neighbourhood Development Plan that provides for the type of development that’s needed in Bookham, while still trying to retain the village’s character and semi-rural atmosphere. But this would not have been possible without the significant involvement of the many residents who have given their input during the process, verbally at meetings and in writing. The Forum would like to thank the people of Bookham for supporting this important community initiative Now that the Plan has been handed to Mole Valley, the
Council will proceed to the next stage of the process. At the meeting of the Mole Valley District Council Executive on Tuesday 9th February, the Executive member for planning, Sarah Seed, proposed that the Bookham NDP had been prepared in accordance with the Neighbourhood Planning General Regulations, that it should be publicised. Representations will be invited and arrangements will be put in place for the Plan to be independently examined by a Planning Inspector. The Executive agreed, and the decision was made to publicise the draft Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) for Bookham. Mole Valley’s public consultation on the draft Plan will run for six weeks during February and March 2016. To take part in the MVDC consultation visit http://www.molevalley.gov.uk/bookhamndp The Plan, together with any representations received during the public consultation, will be submitted to the examiner in April/May. If the Plan passes examination it will be voted on by the whole of the Bookham community in a referendum to be held in October/ November this year.

April car review
abarth 124 Spider Ted Macauley test drives the Adarth 124 Spider, and lets us know what it has to offer....
Specification:
The Abarth. 1.4lt Four cylinders. 170 bhp. Speed:144mph. Zero-to-62mph 6.8secs. MPG 44. Price £29,565.
I
f you are looking for some fun and frolic on the move and can afford an indulgence as opposed to a necessity don’t bother to look beyond Fiat’s new arrival on the keenly fought weenie sports car front...the Abarth 124 Spider. Want glamour? You’ve got it. How about performance? Yes...yes...yes. A growly engine sound that is music to your ears? Indeed. And value for money? Outstanding. The new Abarth reawakens the dreams of old from when the original beauty was launched in 1972. It is a natural, full-flowing and worthy heir to that iconic Spider, an eye-catching twoseater wrapped in a shape to excite. Okay, for the six-foot-odd likes of me it is a wee bit cramped, but with a bit of wriggling, and provided you are not motoring non-stop from Elmbridge to Edinburgh, the slight discomfort is doused in the delight of...well...just being behind the wheel. Not even the offshore nippy air south of Rome, on the high level and twisty coast road, even with the hood down

was intrusive enough to feel the need to wrap up duffel-coat warm. The airflow is that smooth and with a phew-heater and bum-warming seats the whole experience was a sheer pleasure. If needs be the roof can upped, one-handed and on the move in about five seconds. With envious glances galore along the seafront Naples front any doubt that you are in a privileged placing is swiftly dismissed. Give it a hard time, pushing it speedily into corners or going for it on the quicker straightline stretches only stirs all the right responses and you quickly realise that the engineers and planners have assembled a safetyfast hotshot. Standard gear gives the grateful driver a welcome assembly : climate control system, cruise control, adjustable push-button folding door mirrors and a three-gauge instrument binnacle with a big central rev counter, a speedo and a data display which all give the driver an easy-on-the-eye pick-up on info. Add to this a seven-inch colour
display, a digital tuner, an MP3 player, a stereo with four speaker and, optionally, a sat-nav system and you realise there is not a lot more you might need to inform and entertain on the move. In short it is a very fine example of Italian technology, styling and readiness to please with a practicality much envied by rivals – and that is all underlined by the essential…the six-speed manual gearbox, a quick, short-move direct lever that stirs the best from the lively engine in the smoothest possible and effective way. Little wonder the latest gem is hailed by the company as an exciting new chapter, a thriller of a twist, in the Abarth story. “This is just the car our customers have been waiting for, a great looker, and we are confident that this trendy development in the very exciting Abarth story will be welcomed both by old and new customers,” says a proud spokesman. And he is absolutely spot on with his forecast on this stunning performer’s promise. It is a winner. It most certainly was for the usually cynical and suspicious me…

Purple Crocus field now open
Bookham residents may have noticed a beautiful purple crocus field appear this week, on the grass verge under our new Bookham village sign on the A246 at Lower Shott. This is part of Rotary’s Purple4Polio awareness and support campaign aimed at eliminating polio.
This is Rotary’s highest profile international project, and has been funded by the organisation for several decades alongside the Gates Foundation, the UN & others. A concerted push for charitable contributions and vaccinations is still required to clear the last 2-3 countries worldwide of polio.

bookham libraryNEWS Simona Burchill says fairwell to the wonderful library customers I have been a Weekend Library Network Assistant at Bookham Library for just over a year now, and before I embark on my travels to South East Asia, I thought I’d take this opportunity to say goodbye to all the wonderful customers who have come into the library. Everyone is always so kind, cheerful and full of interesting stories! I have loved working at the library as it
has allowed me to become more involved with the locals, and I have learnt just how much the library means to them. I have realised that libraries are not just for books; we provide a wide range of services- my favourite being “Universal Class” on the online reference shelf where you can take lessons in practically anything. I will very much miss working at Bookham!
