From the EDITOR
Happy Easter and welcome to our action-packed April issue! What a month it’s been... snow, rain, wind and sun! But at last I can see some delicate green leaves unfolding on the trees in my garden and I’m looking forward to the first blossoms appearing any day now. Having said that, who knows, by the time you read this, Bookham could be covered by a blanket of snow again! We’ve had a lovely time this month visiting some wonderful local people and venues and we’ve received a selection of interesting local information to share with you too. Firstly, a heart-wrenching tale from a local grandma in the form of a lovely poem, telling the plight of her 3 year old grandson, Benji. My heart went out to him and his family and I hope that, by sharing his story, we can help this little chap. Thank you, Tessa, for sending us your poem. It’s a pleasure to include it this month for you and for Benji. We are also delighted to tell you about a lovely little book by Bookham resident, Mr Barry Southam. We enjoyed meeting Barry at his home; he is an inspiration and his book is very thoughtprovoking. Take a look at page 14 to find out all about it. If you enjoy a good cup of coffee in a relaxed and comfortable environment, we highly recommend the AllSaints BFree Café on Kingston Road, Leatherhead, where we went to sample the coffee and find out all about this fabulous local charity, see page 24 for more details. I’m sure, like us, you’ll enjoy your visit and will be tempted to pop along regularly. Such nice people doing such great work for the community and offering a really wonderful service. There’s lots more to read about, including a jazz club in Bookham, news about Norbury Park, information about another local author, Monica Weller, and her involvement with a recent BBC series, and so much more. We hope you enjoy this busy spring issue. Wishing you a great month, until next time….

Local lady Tessa Wayne has written this lovely poem to her 3 year old deaf grandson who, despite a strong referral from the medical team at St Thomas’, has been refused NHS funding for cochlear implants because of outdated NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines. His parents are now having to fundraise (£80,000) for a private operation. St Thomas’ have said he needs cochlear implants urgently in order to fully develop language skills, so they are hoping to raise the funds by his 4th birthday on 29th June this year. Please reach into your pockets if you are able and help this lovely little chap. Contact details and a link are listed below.

BENJI’S SONG
Since you have no voice, sweet Benji, we’ve got to sing out this song To let them know about you and how NICE got it all wrong. You’re feisty and so cuddly, a child of real courage, A true, wonderful blessing and a wisdom beyond your age. Your ears may be broken but your laughter fills the air, Brightening our days from dawn until dusk, You seem without a care. Your brothers are your heroes, they would fight the fight for you, But since they have no voice at all, we’ll sing this song for them too. There are times when confusion darkens your eyes. With silence growing deeper, this is really no surprise. You trust as a child, surely only the best for you? Sorry, little Benji, sometimes adults don’t have a clue. Since you have no voice, sweet Benji, we’ve got to sing out this song To let them know about you and how NICE got things wrong. Those NICE grown-ups with their outdated guidelines have got it all so wrong, One glimpse of your dear face before them, They would have let you sing your own song. So sorry, little Benji, sometimes big people mess things up, But we’ve got your back, little fellow, For your life WILL be a full cup! So, since you have no voice, sweet Benji, we’ve got to sing out this song To let them know about you and how NICE simply got things wrong. (NICE = The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence)

‘SO THIS IS IT’ LOCAL AUTHOR BARRY SOUTHAM
Recently, we had the great privilege of meeting local Bookham resident, Barry Southam. Barry has written and published a book of short stories - very short stories, they are only 100 words long! Following a history of mental health issues and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Barry, who has many interests, attended a creative writing group which helped him immensely. During his time with the group, he was set the challenge of writing one hundredword stories, based on a particular word or subject, which has culminated in his book. Barry was put in touch with the writing group through a local charity, Work Stress Solutions, which is an Epsom-based charity, providing free services to support individuals to build new skills and develop their potential. The creative writing course aims to reduce stress and anxiety, help with personal development and nurture creativity in a relaxed environment. He has also been supported by Leatherhead-based charity, the Mary Frances Trust, who has been working for over 20 years with people experiencing any kind of emotional or mental distress to help them get on with their lives again. Barry’s book contains 25 short stories and they have made me smile, laugh, hmmm, hah and think! A
14 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
thoroughly enjoyable read that I can fully recommend. Barry has self-published and is very keen to start Book Number 2. For the next one, he has made a list of 175 subjects to write about, not all of which will make the final cut, but a longer book next time, no doubt! Barry’s book, ‘So This Is It’, only costs £1.50 and all proceeds will go towards his next publication. So, if you would like to support Barry in his next project, don’t hesitate, you won’t be disappointed. Copies are available from Wishing Well, 7 High Street, Bookham, or contact Barry direct by email barrybookwriting@ hotmail.com Every year, 1 in 4 people will experience some form of mental health problem. SAFFRON & COCONUT MILK RISOTTO WITH WILTED SPINACH
Welcome to spring! This is the most cheerful risotto that I know, with its beautiful sunny yellow, vibrant green & heartwarming flavours. I made it at my Spring to Life dem just recently & in the snow! The recipe comes, slightly tweaked, from the wonderful Les Waters of ‘Ready Steady Cook’ fame. She has a wonderful cookery school called Abbots Hill down in Dorset if you wish to have a very special treat & escape! Come & join us at my exciting & educational ‘Vegan Superfood’ Dem on Friday 25th May, 11am - 2.30pm, £60: www.beinthekitchen.uk/demonstrations
Ingredients: Method: 1 teaspoon saffron strands 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 bunch of spring onions, finely chopped 400g risotto rice 2 kaffir lime leaves, finely shredded (or 4 dried) 400ml tin of coconut milk 1L hot vegetable or chicken stock (I’m a sucker for home-made or Marigold organic cubes)
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or 1 large tbsp butter) 350g baby spinach Salt and freshly ground black pepper Freshly ground nutmeg
16 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
1. Put the saffron strands in a bowl and pour 2 tablespoons of boiling water over them. Infuse for half an hour. 2. In a large pan, heat the oil. Add the spring onion and cook for 1-2 minutes. Stir in the rice and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes. Stir in the saffron, kaffir lime leaf, coconut milk & 1 ladleful of hot stock. 3. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Stir the rice and as the liquid becomes absorbed, gradually add more stock, a ladle at a time, allowing each ladle to be absorbed before adding the next, and stirring frequently until the rice is cooked, about 20 minutes. 4. Cook the spinach: heat the butter in a large frying pan. Add the spinach leaves and season with salt, black pepper and nutmeg. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the spinach is just wilted. 5. Spoon the risotto into warmed bowls and arrange the spinach on top before serving immediately.
LOCAL AUTHOR ADVISES THE BBC
After a varied career, Monica Weller, who lives in Bookham, became a freelance writer. She is the ghost writer of ‘Ruth Ellis: My Sister’s Secret Life’ in which she unveils fresh evidence about the last woman to be hanged in the UK. Available from Barton’s Bookshop in Leatherhead. Following its publication, Monica wrote a series of magazine articles about Ruth Ellis. She lectures throughout the UK and continues to campaign in her search for the truth, re-examining evidence upon which Ellis was convicted and hanged in 1955. Monica was a consultant for ‘The Ruth Ellis Files: A Very British Crime Story’, a 3-part documentary on BBC4, and made a cameo appearance in Episode 1. Available on BBC iPlayer until mid-April. NORBURY PARK AND OUR VOLUNTEERS
Norbury Park is set in beautiful open countryside and lies within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An ancient site, Norbury may have been one of the Mickleham manors mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Locke family built the present Norbury Park house in 1774, and since that time, the house has been altered and changed hands on numerous occasions. Although the house and its grounds are still in private ownership, Norbury Park itself is managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust. Today, the park is managed to provide wildlife-rich habitats and a range of opportunities for public access and recreation. The reserve is made up of a mixture of woodland, grassland and various areas of farmland. Due to the range of habitats, it is an important haven for many plants and animals, and a large part has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. Norbury Park Volunteer Group was set up in 2015 and local residents have been fundamental in helping care for the reserve. In the last year alone, the group has achieved so much, from clearing vegetation around a hedge that was planted as a legacy and removing old plastic tree tubes to re-instating electric fencing for cattle grazing on the grassland in Walnut Tree Clump.
20 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
They also did some sterling work in upgrading the existing coppice protection fence in Blackberry Wood. For a short time during this winter, the volunteers helped coppice an area of hazel in Updown Wood. In the past, areas of Norbury have been coppiced regularly - cut down to just above ground level and allowed to regrow - to provide bean and pea sticks and used for hedge-laying materials. This is a traditional practice in woodland management that we use today to encourage diversity in wildlife. In springtime, the woodland floor is covered with bluebells which attracts numerous feeding insects. Also very recently, the group cleared overgrown vegetation along the bridleway near to the old London Road Bridge and repaired a broken bar way. Norbury Park Volunteer Group meets every third Friday of the month, carrying out various activities to preserve this invaluable area of Surrey countryside. For more information, please contact the volunteering team at volunteers@surreywt.org.uk or sign up online at http://www.surreywildlifetrust.org/how-you-canhelp/volunteer. There has never been a more exciting time to get involved, whether you can spare a few hours or a full day. Volunteering provides a chance to get involved in local wildlife projects, the opportunity to meet new people and makes a positive contribution to looking after the local area.

Behind the walls of this beautiful converted church is a hidden gem! Rumours of the best coffee in a 10 mile radius had reached our ears. Coffee and cake recommended by experts in this field - cyclists - meant we just had to investigate. Back in 2005, the Leatherhead Youth Project was launched to provide much-needed services for disadvantaged young people in North Leatherhead. Their aim was to help young people be safe, happy, resilient and able to make positive changes in their own lives and in their community. Keen to start a business that would employ and train local young people struggling to secure employment elsewhere, they decided to open a speciality coffee shop. In 2014, AllSaints (aka Bfree Youth Café) was born. We went along to meet Matt Flemming and his team and to try their famous coffee. And it was really good! Offered the choice of cow’s milk, oat milk or almond milk, we chose the oat milk for our cappuccinos. Using Java coffee beans roasted only up the road in Woking, the coffee was hot, smooth and very fresh. All Saints is a speciality coffee shop and sandwich company which serves fabulous coffee, great food and offers the very best support for local young people. A social enterprise, it provides employment and training to local young people through the government apprenticeship scheme. Run by Matt Fleming, 3
apprentices work and train for a year to obtain their customer service apprenticeship and earn some money whilst doing so. Serving food and drinks from 8am - 3.15pm, there is something for everyone, from breakfast and lunch through to afternoon tea...gluten-free choices too! AllSaints can also provide platters and buffets for corporate events, christenings and wakes. They will source ingredients from local producers and suppliers and cater for your individual needs. At one end of the café, they have space to work. If you wish, you can make use of a ‘hot desk’, with an iMac, and suitable software, which you can hire by the hour, day, week or even month! Free wifi is available throughout the coffee shop to all their customers. For small groups, there is a meeting room with a tall table for presentations, 42inch monitor with Apple TV and HDMI input and three beautiful stained glass windows for natural light wifi, and special meeting room rates for your food and drinks! Open 8am-3.15pm Monday to Saturday, this is definitely on my list to come back very soon. Leatherhead & District LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY FRESH evidence of the extent of the Roman occupation of Dorking was revealed at a talk to the Leatherhead & District Local History Society at its February meeting in the Letherhead Institute. Mark Davison, local journalist and author, is also a keen metal detecting enthusiast. He told a packed audience about his experiences over the last decade of searching fields between Dorking and Westcott. Presenting some fascinating finds, Mark showed illustrations and samples of the actual artefacts and coins he had unearthed between 2009 and 2017 on land that was originally part of the Denbies estate. The presentation was the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking searching of meadows, pastures, ploughed fields and paddocks. In addition to more than 50 medieval coins, including pennies from the reigns of Henry II, Henry III, Edward I, Edward II, Edward III and Richard II, he had collected a similar number of Roman coins from land between the Curtis Road industrial estate and the north of Westcott village. The coins included a Celtic stater of King Verica, dating from 10 to 30AD, a Roman denarius of Marc Antony and Octavian, a denarius of Sextus Pompey, a general from the late Republic, dated c42BC and minted in Sicily, and another denarius of Philip the Arab, the 33rd Roman Emperor who ruled from 244-249AD.
26 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
Mark had also unearthed one of the first coins ever used, a Celtic potin from the 1st century BC. A Roman silver silique of Emperor Honorius (393-423AD) had been discovered too. Honorius, one of Rome’s weakest emperors, was helpless when the empire collapsed in the 5th century AD. Mark said a Roman road could have run between Dorking and Guildford, and the coins found near Westcott and Dorking could provide further clues for archaeologists developing research along these lines. The area was rich in history. Milton Court, now the home of Unum insurance company, was built between 1608 and 1610 and owned for many years by the Evelyn family. The Milton estate was owned in the 13th century by the nuns of Kilburn Priory in London. Sondes Place farmhouse was probably the site of an earlier estate with links to the Sondes or de la Sondes family in the 14th century. Before the sale in 1921 of large swathes of the Denbies estate, its acreage had covered five parishes, stretching to Bookham and parts of Ranmore and Westcott. The talk was originally to have been given by archaeologist David Williams, head of Surrey’s Portable Antiquities Scheme, but his sudden death on 9 December came as a shock to his colleagues. He had recorded hundreds of Mark’s own finds and having stepped in late as his replacement, Mark paid tribute to him.

P O EM CO RN E R . THE HEADLESS SPOOK Whenever I travel on the London Tube, I stare at people, though I know it’s rude, To guess their thoughts, their kind of lives, So it took me somewhat by surprise When opposite me sat a pin-striped suit Apparently worn by a headless spook. “How careless”, I thought, “to lose one’s head”. “Try Lost Property”, I almost said. But it’s unnerving to address an empty space With collar and tie, but no actual face. Was he in banking, insurance or law? Was this a first visit? Had he been before? “Can I offer you dinner?”, said a voice on my right. The seat was empty! – I turned in fright And there, like Alice and the Cheshire Cat, Was this handsome face with a bowler hat. “That would be nice”, I dubiously said, “But how can you manage with only a head? Don’t you think it might be better If you and your body could get together?” My heart gave a lurch as he gave me a smile, “That’s been a problem for quite a while! The waiters, they really haven’t a clue, For dining alone, I need a table for two!!” “How did it happen?”, I ventured to ask. “I lost my head whilst passing through France. My looks belie my age, my dear, And time is timeless in my special sphere. For years I’ve longed to return to my home But over water I’m unable to roam. I’m the very first spirit, he said with pride, To use the ‘Tunnel’ from the other side!!” “Your name”, I asked, and turned to him, “Sidney Carton”, he said, with a disarming grin. ‘A Tale of Two Cities’! I began to drool, I fell for you whilst still at school! Suddenly, his features began to fade, “Don’t go yet!”, I cried, dismayed. He murmured gently, “Till another time, You’d better wake up, it’s the end of the line!!

FROM BACKING UP TO BUYING
01372 370300
sales@tecres.co.uk
www.tecres.co.uk
This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.c When buying a computer or laptop, there is a whole heap of jargon that people throw at you with the expectation that you should know what they are taking about - SSDs, RAM, MHz, wifi, HDMI, and so it goes on. We have always felt this is a very rude way to treat your fellow man, so yes, we can talk jargon with you, but we can also talk in finest English to ensure your needs are best met. There are a few pointers that you might appreciate knowing before you buy your new machine. The key components:The processor or the CPU is the engine that powers the PC. It is advisable to buy the best that you can, as CPUs are costly items and are not efficient to change or upgrade at a later stage. If your needs are for base Word processing and Excel-type work, plus some internet browsing and email handling, a basic Intel Dual Core Pentium, Core i3 CPU or AMD A4 or A6 CPU would represent a good choice. If you are looking for something a bit more capable, a good all-round home machine, we would usually advise either an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU. Intel has just launched the 8th generation CPU, so there are some very good performing and great value machines with 6 and 7th generation CPUs. There are model variation within these CPUs - but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Memory or RAM - the more the better, but this can usually be retro fitted. 4Gb of RAM is considered a minimum; going beyond 8Gb is often unnecessary. The latest, fastest DDR4 memory is nowadays standard fit. It moves on the performance of the machine significantly when compared to its earlier counterparts and will offer
42 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
solid performance for years to come. Hard drives - the conventional mechanical hard drives have been using the same technology for around 20 years; they are very economic, have huge storage capacity, but can be slow. Upgrade to a Solid State Hard Drive (SSD) and the performance is phenomenal; they work at 15-20 times faster than the mechanical drives, they are more reliable (as they have no moving parts), but they cost more and have less storage capacity than the older type hard drives. If you need to store loads of data, a great solution is to have both in a machine: the SSD runs the operating system and programs and the mechanical drive stores your data. Graphics cards - game players, photo and video editors and graphics users are better served by having a dedicated graphics card installed. In some cases, the graphics card can cost as much as the computer. In most cases, using the onboard graphics is sufficient, and should you wish to upgrade the graphics, this can sometimes be retrospectively added on a PC, but unfortunately rarely on a laptop. Operating system - Windows is the dominant system here, with Windows 10 being the preferred choice, as it works in a very efficient manner and is the industrydominant product. Unlike earlier versions, Microsoft has stated that Windows 10 will be the operating system of the future, with the program being revised via updates, rather than a distinctly separate new version. To date, we are on the 4rd major version, with a new edition being scheduled for March/ April 2018‌. and yes, the updates are free of charge.

Gardening matters WET GARDENS
Cecelia John
: 01372 200 000
Constant rain here in Britain.....such a waste when you consider how badly it’s needed in other parts of the world, but we gardeners here in Blighty get to the point when we’ve had enough. Garden jobs remain on hold and rough winds have done their worst. But never fear, it’s still quite early season, and with some remedial action, you can make sure your beloved plot recovers fully. Here are some ways you can beat the sog and coax plants into joyous spring mode. Try to keep off the soil to avoid compacting it; when trodden on, wet ground squashes easily, which inhibits drainage and prevents root growth, so do what you can without walking on the beds, or wait for the soil to dry. Your lawn, while super green after all the rain, may also lack resilience, so don’t be tempted to lower the height of the mower blades, and take care not to damage soft turf with your feet. Standing water needs to be dealt with: land plants don’t mind being submerged for 24 hours, but long-standing water will cause root damage. It will help if you can drain it away, maybe by making a temporary trench. Lush new growth needs rescuing. Plants shoot into growth after wet weather, but they become sappy in low light, and climbers, such as clematis, are particularly vulnerable. Tie their young stems into their supports gently, using soft string. And support perennials early:
44 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk
after all the wet, herbaceous plants will grow taller than usual and will risk falling flat, so use interlocking stakes/ canes/pea sticks and tie in as necessary. Wait until the soil is warm and crumbly before you embark on direct sowing outdoors because it’s not a great idea to sow seeds into saturated ground. By contrast, you can sow young plants in the wet, but handle the soil with a light touch. And beware of slugs and snails: they love wet weather and multiply with hideous speed, so take precautions to protect vulnerable plants, such as dahlias, hostas, sunflowers and baby clematis shoots. As permanent containers may have become waterlogged, make sure that their drainage holes are free. If necessary, stand larger ones on feet or on porous ground, and be ready to replace the compost after long-term waterlogging. Also, prepare for frost: it can split containers full of watery compost as that expands, and if you’ve planted tender plants in them, be ready with the horticultural fleece. This applies to any vegetable planting in your veg plot too: potato foliage is vulnerable to frost damage, so lay some fleece over any susceptible plants. As I write this, and for a change from the constant rain, we have driving snow - such joy - but just remember, come June, we’ll be told there’s a water shortage and the reservoirs are running dry....pffffff

Volkswagen UP
CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
I hope I am not judged as disloyal. And I never imagined I would say it against my mini marvel and beloved Fiat 500, but there is a rejigged city car to beat my treasured treat. The clues are that the rival is an UPsurging, UPwards bound, UPstaging, UPgraded, UPshot. Namely, the Volkswagen UP!! Alright, I know the play on words may be overdone, but all the descriptions are full justification for the face-lifted challenger for top honours in the fiercely competitive city car class. It arrived originally on the increasingly heavy and demanding commuter scene in late 2011 with eyewatering financial backing from VW who were ambitious for a takeover of the city car market and to overshadow the opposition. It didn’t quite work out that way originally and its rivals shaded its ambitions for a few critical years. Then two years ago, the Volkswagen brainboxes facelifted their UP with more technical benefits, new and fresher colours, a nippy turbo petrol engine and leg room aplenty. The UPshot - sorry!!! - was a turnaround in the demand. Working on the new-found interest in their tiny offering, VW widened their showpiece’s power

and offer right now a choice of three, not the old two, petrol options. They are 60bhp and 75bhp non-turbo engines or 90 bhp turbo, all of them excellent and without exception. My personal preference, the guilty party in the overshadowing of my luvvvverly little Fiat 500, is 90Bhp UP Beats. It was a clever and astute move. Combined with its light, airy and roomy cabin, light steering, dead simple controls, vastly improved performance and low running costs and style on the go, the newer five-gear manual UP is reckoned to be the very best city car seller. It is a dream of a performer around the stop-go-crawl city streets, and with its ample seating space, even for six-footers like yours truly, it is not so bad on the open roads on the longer journeys from the residential outskirts into the mêlée of the rush hours to and from the office. In short, it is a class-leader. And at a reasonable price. The genius of the VW planners and designers has to be admired when they come up with an undoubted winner of a car like this that will be UP and at ’em. Specification: Up Beat 1.0T. Bhp 90. Mpg 60. Speed 115 mph. 0-62 in 9.9 secs.Price £11,505

PROBUS CLUB OF MOLE VALLEY
If interested, please contact Michael Brown on 01372 878 875, or email croxton@talktalk.net
THE PROBUS CLUB OF MOLE VALLEY recently celebrated 25 years since it was founded in August 1992 under the auspices of the Leatherhead Rotary Club, with past president John Dyer as its first chairman. The membership numbers around 100 and its achievements over those 25 years are very well documented at www.molevalleyprobus.org.uk. The purpose of Probus Clubs is to provide a regular meeting place for people with a PROfessional or BUSiness background who have retired or are approaching retirement, particularly for those who would appreciate and value increased social contacts in their retirement, the opportunity to meet others in similar circumstances and participate in activities of general interest. Mole Valley Probus meets for lunch and a talk on the third Thursday of each month at Tyrrell’s Wood Golf Club for 10 months of the year. At the recent November lunch a retired barrister, Peter Thompson, gave an entertaining, humorous talk about his career, going back to when he was called to the Bar in 1966. Other talks in the past few months have been on Sheds (very funny), Medical Detection Dogs, The Oregon Trail, and ‘Surrey in World War One’. In December and May, the ladies are invited to join the gentlemen for dinner and entertainment.
50 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
The Club arranges regular outings, organised by members to places of interest, concerts and the theatre, which the ladies are encouraged to join. Outings earlier in 2017 included a very interesting visit to the Highways Agency Control Centre at Godstone, Arundel Castle and local Wetland Centre, and a Thames Cruise from Caversham to Mapledurham House. December will see a visit by coach to John Rutter’s Christmas Celebration at the Royal Albert Hall, and January a coach trip to 42nd Street at Drury Lane, with an organised meal. In most months, there is a walk, planned by a member, sometimes with help from his lady. These are mostly fairly local, not more than about 4 miles, and not too strenuous! Occasionally, the walk is based on a part of London. Recent walks have covered Ripley, Ockley, Polesden Lacey Farm & Bagden Farm and gentrified Brixton! With the meal each month, a raffle is organised for the benefit of a local charity. When the proceeds reach £500, the chosen charity is invited to send a representative to receive a cheque and explain how the money will help. Over the past 25 years, nearly £40,000 has been raised in this way for local good causes. New members would be very welcome to attend a complimentary lunch to get the ‘feel’ of the Club before deciding on applying to join.

HOME WANTED! Gypsy and Louis
This gorgeous 2-year-old sister & brother pair came into care after their previous owner could no longer care for them. These beautiful siblings were born into a multi-cat household so they didn’t get as much attention as they needed and as a result were very shy when they first arrived at the cattery, but with some TLC both have become much more confident and affectionate. Louis is a particular favourite with people who come to the cattery as no one can resist his cheeky nature and big blue eyes! Gipsy is more shy around strangers but once she gets to know you she is very sweet. Gipsy & Louis love other cats and are looking for a home with understanding owners and no young children. If you feel you can give these cats the loving forever home they so desperately deserve, please call Rosemary on 01737 350307 Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-Cats-Protection

SURREY POLICE NOTICE NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
Vehicle Crime 2018
We have seen an increase recently in vehicles being targeted by thieves who steal tools, machinery and other items that people have left inside. The consequences of having work items stolen can be really damaging to a business, resulting in replacement costs, lost work opportunities and time. I appreciate that there’s no instant fix for this type of attack but there are some ideas that I would suggest to make vehicles and property more secure and less vulnerable to being targeted. If people are going to leave tools in their vehicles, they should be marked very distinctly, ie to make them less attractive to thieves. The simplest way is to mark them with high-coloured gloss paint. The tools are still perfectly useable but very identifiable to their owners, which can often make it much harder to sell them on. Another idea to consider is putting a battery operated PIR intruder alarm in the vehicle. There are numerous makes and models available on the market but the following link shows a good example:-
58 LookLocal Magazine - April 2018
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Battery-PoweredGSM-Alarm-UltraPIR/dp/B00MUWLA46 There are also ways of making it harder to break in, and the following link shows a product which is specifically designed to enhance the security of transits:https://www.protectavan.co.uk/vehicles/ford/ transit-2006-2013-hykee-replock I generally mention CCTV last, mainly because it can be useful as part of other security measures and not the only solution. However, one very versatile product that I have seen in action (and it is very good) is The Cube. Check out the attached link for more information:https://uwatch.co.uk/the-uwatch-cube/ I hope that you will share this information with anyone you know whose livelihood may be affected by this kind of theft.

Have you ever found an author you love, then discovered that you have read everything they have written? The ‘Who else writes like?’ website on our on
line reference shelf can help with a list of suggestions to guide you to your next reading adventure. Parents may also like to go to the ‘Who next?’ website to help with ideas to expand and encourage their children’s reading. Go to the Surrey Libraries website or ask for more information in the library.

Not award-winning but definitely bestselling, Jodi Picoult does not shy away from tackling controversial issues. Her 2016 novel ‘Small Great Things’ explores prejudice, race and social justice. Bookham Library is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. And Saturdays 9.30am through to 5pm.
