WELCOME TO OUR FESTIVE ISSUE

Well, where did that year go then? Once again, it’s time for Christmas shopping and preparations for the festive holidays …. Bookham retailers are preparing to welcome you for the late night shopping event on Thursday 6th December. This is always a lovely event which brings the village together for some pre-festive cheer and shopping of course! This event always marks the beginning of the Christmas preparation for me, the atmosphere is lovely and it is a great way to support our hard working local businesses too. If you’ve never been, don’t miss out, and Mole Valley are even offering us all free parking in the Bookham Car Parks from 3pm that evening! (details within) Back in November there was a wonderful turn out at the Centenary Remembrance Memorial Service; very heart warming to see, despite the torrential rain earlier that day, a huge crowd gathered to pay their respects. Do see page 26 for coverage of this and also news on the knitted poppy sales this year! Bookham never fails to impress… An enthusiastic team of locals are ready and waiting to deliver your Christmas cards again this year; Bookham Charity Postage Stamps are available to buy locally from a selection of pick-up points, see page 12 for more details. We are also delighted to include some stunning work from Bookham Camera Club this month. I am always in ore of their talent… I hope we can include some more of their work soon? As well as all this we have lots of other interesting information in this busy festive issue which I hope you will find helpful. Finally, we also include a great competition for all you MG enthusiasts out there! A substantial & lovely book about the history of these much loved cars is up for grabs! This really would make a wonderful Christmas Gift. See page 38/9 for that. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year, Until next time,
Ros

Bookham Christmas late night opening 2018 Thursday 6th December 6.00pm - 8.00pm
Featuring: Local Artisan Stalls. Local Children's Choirs. Santa’s Grotto. Steel Pan Performance and Christmas Tree Festival
The Planning Committee hope that as many people as possible come out and support this fabulous annual event. Please note: it is a week earlier this year and the event will run from 6-8pm. As usual Bookham High Street and Church Road, from St Nicolas Church to Post House Lane, will be closed to traffic during these times. All Aloud Choir, Mole Valley Silver Band and Carol Singers from the churches will be playing/singing outside in the High St and Church Road. In the Baptist Church Steel Pans will be playing and there will be choirs from the local schools. Also there will
be a selection of crafts stalls with Christmas gift ideas. In St Nicolas Church there will be a display of decorated trees on this year’s theme: ‘Journey to Bethlehem’. Father Christmas will be distributing gifts in St Nicolas Pastoral Centre where there will also be activities for children. Take part in the “Spot the Odd One Out” competition. Look for the objects in shop windows you wouldn’t expect to see. Visit Saint Nicolas at the Lychgate and tell him the most unusual one you have found to win a small prize. Lots to see and do throughout the evening. Come down and join the fun!

Be in the Kitchen FESTIVE RECIPE
CRANBERRY & APPLE MINCEMEAT This is my version and I am delighted with it! As always, trying to cut out refined sugar and keep things deliciously simple and full of taste – get making those mince pies…. My lovely crumbly gluten-free shortcrust pastry and mince pie recipe is on my blog: https://www.beinthekitchen.uk/blog/ - all that remains for me to say, is Happy Christmas everyone!
INGREDIENTS 450g/1lb Bramley apples, peeled, cored & chopped into small pieces 225g/8oz shredded suet, coconut oil or butter 225g/8oz dried cranberries 225g/8 oz raisins
225g/8oz sultanas 225g/8oz currants 110g/4oz whole mixed candied peel, finely chopped 110g/4oz stevia granules grated zest and juice of 2 oranges
grated zest and juice of 2 lemons 55g/2 oz flaked almonds 4 tsps mixed ground spice ½ tsp ground cinnamon freshly grated nutmeg 6 tbsp brandy
METHOD 1. Mix all the ingredients together, except the brandy, in a large bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and leave in a cool place overnight so the flavours mingle and develop. 2. Preheat the oven to 120°C/225°F/gas ¼. Remove the cloth and cover with tinfoil. Place in the oven for 3 hours. 3. Take out of the oven, remove the foil and stir from time to time as it cools down. When cold, stir in the brandy. Pack into clean, dry jars and seal with screw top lids.

leatherhead youth project
LYP Christmas Celebration LYP has had another exciting year in Leatherhead, Bookham and across Mole Valley. This year we have grown our projects again and are providing more support to more young people locally. This couldn’t be possible without the wonderful support of all our volunteers and supporters. LYP will be hosting our Christmas Celebration on 13th December at our Leatherhead base AllSaints Coffee. This is a wonderful opportunity to share time together, celebrate our volunteers, share stories from the year and vision for the future. For more information please contact oli@leatherheadyouthproject.com Summer projects As ever the LYP team had a busy summer packed with activities for young people. This year included some exciting trips. The North Leatherhead Youth Council had a reward trip to Aqua Park. The council meet regularly to give their voice to local issues, this year they met several influential people and groups, and they also took part in social action projects this summer that better their community. The trip was a thank you
22 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018
and well done for all their hard work. On top of this, young people from BFree Youth Cafe went on the annual beach trip and the London Monopoly challenge! Bookham Youth Project held its second ‘Schools out for Summer’ event on Lower Road rec - with inflatables, craft activities, sports and games all free for local young people. Welcome Jenny! In August we welcomed Jenny to the team. Having grown up locally and just graduated from Moorlands College, Jenny has a real passion for local youth work. Jenny has taken on the role of Bookham Lead Youth Worker, and will be leading the Bookham projects developing activities and projects to support young people in the schools, community and churches in Bookham. LYP are thrilled to have Jenny as part of the team, she’s a wonderful addition and is already leading all our youth work in Bookham. Next time you are in AllSaints Coffee Shop do say hello.

THANKS BOOKHAM! A COMPLETED MISSION! You may well remember articles in previous Look Locals about Aprender, Bookham’s International Education Charity, and their work in Lebanon supporting Syrian refugee children.
Refugee children engage in active learning during outdoor time at the preschool in Chouf.
Aprender’s Early Years Consultant, Rachael Underwood, created a course which she co-delivered with Phil Hawkins, CEO and founder, to enable a group of community volunteers to open a brandnew preschool in the mountains of Chouf in central Lebanon. Well, the course has now finished and the wonderful new teachers have all received their graduation certificates. “It’s been so exciting to see the transformation in both the children and the teachers.”, said Phil, “When the children arrived on their first day back in November 2017, we saw trauma in their faces.” Since then, Rachael and Phil have delivered 12 days of training spread across the year thanks to donations from many folk in Bookham, Fetcham and further afield. Phil goes on to say that “The generosity of our supporters has enabled us to deliver quality training for free so that vulnerable children get a boost to the start of their lives. You can see the excitement of learning in their eyes now. The teachers are thrilled to see the progress in such a short period of time. It was such a pleasure working with the team as although the course really stretched them, they rose
24 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018
to the challenge and are now offering a loving environment that will change the futures of so many lives.” Rachael and Phil spent their final three days in Chouf in October. A new development has been the opening of the first Primary School classroom as some of the older children now need to progress! What happens next? Bookham and Horsley Rotary Club have raised funds to help Aprender take this initiative to the next level. Rachael will be returning to Lebanon across 2019 to train and equip some of the team to become coaches so that the training can be replicated in other locations where needed to boost this essential child development phase for refugee children. Aprender also work in other locations and shortly will be travelling to Brazil to work with education in poor communities. Watch this space!
The team of teachers pose for a photo with their trainers Rachael and Phil (back row, second & third in from left)
We are happy to talk at local events and groups to raise awareness and hopefully do a bit of fundraising! Do get in touch if you would like to book us on 07564 070927 or via email on admin@aprender.co.uk. Do check out the Aprender website, recently renewed by the wonderful Jo Cobley at Cobswebs Website Design (www.cobswebs.com), who generously gave her time and expertise to help this great cause. Thanks Jo!! If you would like to support the valuable work carried out by Aprender you can donate to this local charity through their website at www.aprender.co.uk

NEW GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE AT ST. NICOLAS, GREAT BOOKHAM
This new garden was opened in St Nicolas churchyard for the interment of ashes in 2006 and we are pleased to let next of kin know that it will now be possible to have their loved one’s name recorded on one of the new plinths recently erected there. Their names will be recorded under the year of death. We have been working diligently over the past months to trace contact details for some of the next of kin, as
for a variety of reasons, some of the addresses for earlier years are now out of date. If you have moved to a new address during the intervening years, we would really like to hear from you. If you think this affects you or a member of your family, you can contact us in writing to: St Nicolas Parish Office, 2a, Fife Way, Great Bookham, KT23 3PH. Marking your envelope ‘Garden of Remembrance’.

KNITTED POPPIES RAISED OVER £7,000!
At the time of going to press, we are waiting to hear how much Bookham raised from sales of the traditional British Legion Poppy Appeal. We can however tell you that the knitted poppies have raised over £7,000 with the final total still to be confirmed. This initiative has been so well supported by the residents of Bookham. It was lovely to see that so many also supported

and attended the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in St Nicolas churchyard on Remembrance Sunday, as you can see from the pictures. Well done and thank you to everyone involved in this year’s Poppy Appeal and to everyone who took part in the Remembrance Services and activities throughout the village this year.

GARDENING MATTERS HANGING BASKETS
Hanging baskets, we do love you. There are many advantages to growing stuff in them, especially if you have a smaller garden or want to brighten up a doorway/ wall/patio, not least of which is that you can completely re-invent your chosen space every time you plant. Planting baskets up should be fairly straightforward (hopefully), regardless of your gardening experience. First step, pick a basket type, and there are 3 types to choose from. Rattan baskets look great and have a plastic liner, which is perfect for water retention; plastic baskets are good for insulation, helping to protect your plants from strong winds and sunshine, and wire-mesh baskets are a traditional design that allows for planting up both the top and sides of the basket. Next step, line the hanging basket and add potting compost. Rest your basket on a bucket to support it while you work and line it with a wood fibre liner or moss. Then mix some water gel crystals and slow-release fertiliser granules into multi-purpose or bedding plant compost and fill the basket, leaving approximately 2cm at top. For rattan baskets and plastic baskets with solid sides, you’ll need fewer plants, up to 3 x centre plants, 3 x plants for colour and 6 x trailing plants. Put the trailing plants a few centimetres from the edge of the basket and fill any gaps with the compost mix, then firm the soil around the base of each plant. In a standard wire-mesh 35cm basket, you can add lots of plants, up to 3 x centre
Cecelia John: 01372 200 000 34 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018
plants, 5 x plants for colour and between 7-9 plants to trail down the outside of the basket, pushing them carefully into the holes. Sprinkle a further tablespoon of controlled-release fertiliser granules over the compost and water well. Fertiliser should be applied throughout the growing season, or use a liquid feed weekly alongside watering the compost. For the best results, make sure that the size of the plants you choose suits your basket of choice….dahlias or delphinium are out. Good trailing plants are surfinia (the trailing petunia), trailing fuchsia and lobelias. For colour, add nemesia and pansies, along with fuchsias and geranium…..and don’t forget to remove dead flowerheads regularly: not only does it make your basket look tidier, but also it encourages more flowers. Also, you don’t have to plant flowers in your hanging basket: strawberries and tomatoes grow extremely well in baskets and are very easy to pick. Generally speaking, your basket should be watered once or twice a day in the summer, but on hot, dry days, water it early and hang it in the shade. Or put a job lot of ice cubes in it and let them melt slowly. On cold days, wait until it warms up before watering….and ensure the bracket on which it’s hanging is strong enough to hold the weight of a watered basket, because the last thing you want is Auntie Doris walking underneath it as the bracket gives way…. |

MGB
THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY BOOK REVIEW AND COMPETITION An invite to journey down Memory Lane has dropped heavily through my letter box. It is in the expansive and colourful guise of a vast tome entitled “MGB - The Illustrated History!” It took me straight back to my shared ownership of a drop-top MG when I was serving my country as a National Serviceman based at Bomber Command HQ, RAF Wyton, nr Cambridge, with its spectacular display of V-Bombers, Valiants, Victors and Vulcans. My Welsh pal Ed Williams and I, high flyers in our jointly-bought MG, were the envy of the jetsetting crews, and just to add to our eccentricty , in car, we always wore black and shiny top hats when, at weekends, we were outing with undergrads, mainly female. Ah well!!! The reminder of those carefree and madcap days is the pleasurable MGB volume, the fourth edition, from Veloce, the painstaking publishers of automotive books galore. The bulky hardback, a coffee-table spectacular, is not cheap at thirty five quid - but its 256 pages and 260 pictures of the iconic and remarkable fun car are a bargain treat for those of whose affection for the marvellously enjoyable motor is a continuing memory. The author, Jonathan Wood, is the author of more than 30 books on the history of the UK’s motor industry, and he is...deservedly in my opinion... twice the winner of the Guild of Motoring Writers’ Montagu Trophy as well as being awarded similar recognition in America for his handiwork. His co-author, Lionel Burrell was the originator of Classic Car magazine, and, when he is not showing off his 3-litre Bentley, which he has owned for 50 years,he is restoring a rebuild of a 1926 Talbot. They are both committed MG enthusiasts, hence
their unstinting efforts to excite we outsiders from the pedigree frontage of the traditional iconic and bestloved sports car. But back to the Veloce book. It is a treasure. I have not been able to put it down. Its high level is a showpiece and the splendour of the photographs, as well as the recountings, reminiscences and technical detail and data will, I promise, hold any MG enthusiast, or , for that matter, any keen car enthusiast, spellbound. After Ed’s and my demob, he returned to Cardiff and I to my Manchester home town. We agreed he could have our wee treasure. I moved on to a convertible Sunbeam Talbot, then, much later, I progressed to super-car heights with three successive E-Type Jaguars and then a Lamborghini Espada. Was I crazy? Each,in its own showcase way, was a thrill of a wellenvied drive - but I never quite recaptured the total glee of running about the country in our airy MG. After our demob I lost contact with Ed. I wonder if he still parades our draughty wee runner with its hard-on- the-bum seats, ripped-off fabric roof but pleasantly harmonic engine. I am more than happy to share my overwhelming admiration for the splendid book and spread its appeal to what I know would be an appreciative readership. Therefore I, kindness personified, will bless a lucky recipient with a prize copy if they come up with the correct answer to my quiz question:
What do the initials MG stand for? Please email your answers and magazine By Ted Macauley area to ros@looklocalmagazie.co.uk before 14/12/18

PO EM CO RN ER HELP!?
Are you, like me, surprised to find How little you know of the human mind? Do you, like me, find it hard To penetrate the bright facade? Do you really know what friends are feeling? That deep down inside they’re lost and screaming For help - a moment’s peace. Or moving towards a final release From relentless pressures on every side, Something snaps - and down they slide. Perhaps in some future computer age Faces will be read like the printed page, With “despair” writ large for all to see, It’s growth denied in privacy. What would we do? What could we say? Now able to read, would we turn away?

A STUDY OF
COUNTRY HOUSE SERVICES AT POLESDEN LACEY Hugh Baker and Michael Herbert of Fetcham U3A Industrial Heritage Group lectured Leatherhead & District Local History Society following their research on Polesden Lacey’s utility services in the last century. These helped to make the house ‘fit for a maharajah’. In 1902, the owner of Polesden Lacey, Sir Clinton Dawkins, called in architect Ambrose Poynter and civil engineer Mrs Ronnie Greville Stephen Terry to advise him on rebuilding the mansion and equipping the estate with all modern utilities. Their detailed plans specified waterworks, including a well with galleries, bore hole, tower, reservoirs and mains; hot and cold water supply, drainage and heating apparatus; stables, coach and motor houses with dwellings for the men; and a complete electric light and power station with all machinery in duplicate, and with storage batteries and travelling crane. The work was completed in 1904. Ronnie and Margaret Greville bought Polesden Lacey in 1906 and carried out further extensive interior alterations to make it a ‘house fit for a maharaja’. The bedrooms now had telephones and en-suite bathrooms, almost unheard- of at the time. The baths had no taps: the water rose from the bottom without noisy splashing! When Mrs Greville died in 1942, all her papers were destroyed and most of the house records were lost. Fetcham U3A Industrial Heritage Group has looked at the water supply and electricity generation installed in 1904, along with the communications telephones and indicators - added later. Providing water for the fountains and gardens was as important as for the house. After a new well was dug, water from the old one was used for fountains. Before
1904 underground reservoirs were used to store rainwater from the roofs. They continued to be used, along with an underground rainwater reservoir and a garden reservoir in a small tower, with new pumps. The new system from 1904 provided ten times the previous capacity. A photograph of Polesden Lacey’s engine house with its 20 HP oil engines installed in 1905 to generate
Polesden Lacey
electricity, hangs in the National Trust’s offices. The building remains but there is no record of what happened to the oil engines. However a detailed description in The Engineer journal explained how they worked. Mrs Greville introduced an internal telephone system which first operated before 1913 and was later replaced by a larger system enabling residents and guests to summon servants to rooms throughout the house. Six phones remain today but notes on the electrical plans indicate there may have been more before Mrs Greville died. At next month’s L&DLHS lecture on Friday, 19 January, Tony Matthews will present the story of Cherkley Court and its extraordinary owners Abraham Dixon, founder of the Letherhead Institute itself, Lord Beaverbrook, the controversial media magnate, and subsequent events culminating in today’s exclusive luxury hotel. The monthly talks start at 8pm in the Letherhead Institute with coffee from 7.30pm. Entrance £2. For more information go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

GLOW AT RHS WISLEY 1 DECEMBER - 2 JANUARY
Christmas Glow returns to Wisley this winter, offering the chance to explore RHS Garden Wisley after dark and see some of its most iconic features in a whole new light. Following a twinkling trail around the garden, visitors will discover larger-than-life botanical illuminations, and, for the first time, will enjoy atmospheric music to accompany their walk at certain points. Now in its fourth year, the popular event guides visitors around a new route for 2018, taking in locations including the Rock Garden, the Seven Acres lake and the Jellicoe Canal. Jigantics, designers of cultivated illumination, will this year bring a number of brand new blooms to Wisley, including arches of gladioli over the new Wisteria Walk and a bouquet of alliums on Seven Acres. Favourite installations such as the waterliles on the Jellicoe Canal and interactive colour-changing flowers will return to complete the uniquely floral immersive experience. The paved route will take in not only the floral lights, but also a number of Wisley’s most famous and spectacular
50 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018
trees, bathed in bright colours to showcase their beauty. The magnificent Glasshouse will also be illuminated, where a magical Woodland Realm awaits discovery, with elves, treehouses and Santa’s reindeer all to be found in a beautiful festive display. Look out for sparkling plantfilled baubles hanging from the trees and the towering ‘Christmas tree’ of vibrant poinsettia. Due to popular demand a priority booking system has been introduced for 2018, and all visitors must book a time slot in advance of their visit. Glow 2018 will be open from 4–8pm (last entry at 7pm) every day between 1 December and 2 January except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Wisley Plant Centre and Gift Shop will be open throughout, with a fantastic range of decorations and gift ideas for all the family, and hot chocolate, mulled wine, mince pies, cranberry and gin brownies and Christmas cake are just a taste of the warming food and drink on offer. Wisley, Woking, Surrey, GU23 6QB. 01483 224234 www.rhs.org.uk/wisley.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR - HOPEFULLY!!
It would have been easy to re-visit all the usual crime reduction advice that I tend to mention leading up to Christmas! General home security; making your home look occupied when you are away and not leaving wrapped presents on display are all still important but….this year, I would like to focus on some of the other types of crime that can be very prevalent. It is easy to get quite stressed during the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year and that can make people vulnerable to opportunistic theft. For example, if you are hurrying back to your car after shopping and someone asks if the £5 they are holding belongs to you, please don’t be distracted. It is quite possible that, while you are checking your wallet or purse, another person is pickpocketing from the other bags you may be carrying!! When shopping in busy stores, always make sure that you know where your purse or wallet is and that it is safe. If you have a handbag with a long strap, consider wearing it across your body and make sure that the zip fastening is closed. Men’s wallets should also be kept in an inside coat pocket and not in the back of jeans or trousers, where they can easily be “lifted”. Buying gifts online? If a message pops up on your screen, telling you that there is a potential virus on your computer and asking you to click on a link or call a number - DON’T!! Just log off and do something else
and try again later. This is a common method being used by cyber thieves to access your personal details or “blackmail” you into paying money to them via credit or debit cards! The theft of tools from work vehicles seems to be becoming more widespread and the impact this can have on someone’s livelihood can be huge. With work vehicles and vans being parked up over the holiday period, they can be vulnerable to being targeted. Ideally, I would like everyone to remove all tools from their vans but accept that this isn’t always going to be practical. Putting a battery-powered, motion activated audible alarm inside the van can be an effective (and very noisy) deterrent against theft. We have also seen instances of people going door-todoor, selling “high-quality” leather goods or knife sets and giving the reason that they are returning home to their own country for Christmas and cannot take these items on a plane. They are almost certainly stolen and the “high-quality” leather is more than likely fake. No one should be drawn into buying things from doorstep sellers and the basic rule of “Not sure don’t open the door” is a good one to follow. Hopefully, none of you will have to deal with any of the situations described above and I hope that these simple reminders will be of some help? Wishing you all the very best for a Happy Christmas and New Year!!
