WELCOME TO LOOK LOCAL IN THE SUMMER TIME!

As I am writing this message, it’s a sunny, blue-sky evening and the birds in my garden are really going to town! It was with this in mind, that we decided to decorate our Look Local Village Day Stand with some feathered friends this year – the theme was after all, Bookham in Flight! We had a great day; there were so many colourful stalls and as always the parade was awesome, so much effort had been put into the costumes and all the children looked wonderful! I hope you enjoy re-living it when you turn to our double page spread within. For a little village Bookham puts on a pretty good show, don’t you agree? As well as Village Day itself, Open Gardens and Village Week take a lot of hard work to organise and bring together. Huge thanks must go to everyone involved in the preparation and planning from Bookham Community Association, too many to mention, but you know who you are! A job very well done. There have been plenty of other events happening locally too; we are delighted to share coverage of a fabulous WI Centenary event which took place at The Old Barn Hall; Michelle and I went along and had a great afternoon which was also enjoyed by the many members who attended from the surrounding local areas too. Tea and cakes were of course available in abundance, made and enjoyed by many! Also this month, The Arts Society Bookham kindly invited me along to their June lecture. And very interesting it was too, entitled ‘Inspired by Stone Henge’ I learnt a great deal about this mysterious stone circle, and about the influence it has had over the years. If you fancy some culture of a slightly different nature, we have another fabulous competition this month: The Immersion Theatre Company are offering the chance to win tickets to see ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’ at near-by Hatchlands Park, turn to page 18 for further details. That’s about it from me this month, we will be back with another issue in September, so until then, I wish you all a wonderful Summer.

MOLE VALLEY W.I.

Mole Valley was founded in ’65 Since when we’ve somewhat grown in size. With members numb’ring 60 or more All shapes and sizes pass through the door To monthly meetings whose varied scope Satisfies everyone-we hope! We listen, and learn about things that matter, We meet our friends, we laugh, we natter, For a W.I. friend is a friend indeed, “Limpet-like” when you’re most in need. To misquote a saying that everyone knows, “We often reap what another sews”, So the work and the planning of just a few Means such a wide choice of things to do. In vain attempts to beat the bulge, In various sports we do indulge, Activities in which we dabble Are bridge (with lunch) and also scrabble, Summer rambles with pubs in view, Skittles and quizzes, and theatre trips too. Homecraft skills we of course pursue Not for all, but quite a few, A fine new banner, beautifully made, To Guildford Cathedral was on parade. And as I sit and write these lines, Mole Valley has adapted and moved with the times. We’ve all grown older! And been heard to admit That energy’s lacking and we’re not fighting fit! But the brain’s still ticking, our interests grow Enjoying new hobbies, plus the ones we know. As we pause for a moment to reminisce Let us also remember those whom we miss, Their support and friendship, the laughter and chat, It’s good to look forward, but also good to look back. So in this year of celebrations, We offer to County our Congratulations!

THE GRANGE CELEBRATES 80 YEARS

OF SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

The School of Stitchery & Lace in the 1950s.

Nathalie, Jane and Sam are part of our new mug making mini enterprise.

The Grange Centre for People with Disabilities in Bookham celebrates its 80th anniversary this year with a fete on 14 July and the opening of its new Heritage Room in September. The Grange was founded in 1938 as The School of Stitchery and Lace by Miss Julia Sweet. A pioneer in her day, she wanted to give young women with disabilities a chance to learn needlework and lacemaking and earn their own living. The quality of the School’s work was so high, it came to the attention of Queen Mary who placed many orders for nightgowns, gifts, baby layettes and chemises. She encouraged her daughter-in-law, Princess Alice to become patron of the School in 1952. Eighty years on, The Grange continues the ethos of the School of Stitchery and Lace. We support over 100

people with learning disabilities to live independent and fulfilling lives. We are a care provider, a housing association and a charity so we can provide the right package of accommodation and support the person needs. Our beautiful 8-acre site in Rectory Lane is always buzzing with people learning skills such as catering, horticulture, woodwork and creative arts. We run mini businesses such as fudge making and we have gift shops on Bookham and Dorking as well as our famous Simply Scones tea room on Tuesday afternoons. We are lucky to have 30 local employers who offer work experience to people we support. Never been to The Grange? Come and celebrate our 80th anniversary with us at our fete on Saturday, 14 July 2018 11am-3pm or on Heritage Open Day on Saturday, 15 September 2018.

MATTERS G A R D E N IN G

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR GARDEN WHEN ON HOLIDAY Cecelia John: 01372 200 000 Going on holiday is super-fab, but gardens are a big worry. The thought of returning to knee-high grass, puny fruit and dried-out pot plants is enough to put anyone off going away, so here are a few precautions. Watering is the biggest issue. Plants in containers are completely reliant on the water they’re given. When planting up baskets, add water-retaining gel to the compost: this acts as a reservoir and helps keep baskets wetter for longer. Take them off their hooks, putting them in a shady area out of direct sunlight. This applies equally to patio containers. It’s also an idea to group containers together to increase the humidity around them and reduce the amount of water needed. If possible, stand containers in saucers: these will help retain any rainfall, which will be soaked up gradually. Or put a bucket of water next to the containers and use pieces of capillary matting as wicks to transfer water slowly from the bucket to your pots. If you’ve been keeping your garden watered/fed/weedfree, most areas won’t suffer from being abandoned for a while. Most standard lawns cope perfectly well, but mow them just before you leave and as soon as you get back…and don’t worry about watering a lawn – it will survive, however dry it gets. Higher-quality lawns need mowing more often, so ask a friend or a professional contractor to do it for you while you’re away. Many vegetable crops will suffer if short of water. If they can’t all be watered while you’re away, make sure

28 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2018

|

ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk supplies are concentrated on those producing pods - eg peas and beans - and fruit, eg tomatoes. Leafy crops, eg lettuce, are also worth keeping well-watered or they may run to seed. Ensure they’re watered thoroughly before you go, and mulch the bare soil between rows/ individual plants with composted manure or straw to help retain water. Some vegetables, particularly runner beans, courgettes and tomatoes, need picking regularly to continue producing new pods/fruits. If you have to leave them unattended, remove all ripening tomatoes and swelling pods from runner beans before you go: to get the best harvests from your fruit, they need to be well-watered while the fruit is swelling. Again, a thorough watering and a thick mulch before you go will work wonders. If weeds are allowed to flower and set seed in beds/ borders, they’ll continue to grow for years to come. Try to clear all weeds before leaving, then cover bare soil between plants with a layer of bark to prevent other weeds from establishing. This will also help moisture retention. Most plants won’t need watering, but avoid planting anything just before you go: the roots of newly-planted plants need to be kept moist until they’ve settled in. If you don’t want to miss your peak flowering display, deadhead repeat-flowering plants before you leave. This will allow new buds to develop while you’re away, ready to come into full bloom when you’re back. And now, go away and relax…..

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989. What an exciting few months we have been having, so we thought it would be worthwhile recapping some things that you may have missed: GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) came into force on 25 May 18. Generally speaking the regulation is there to protect you, your data and how companies and organisations handle and protect your data. Something you have the right to do, is to ask any company or organisation holding your data to reveal what information they are holding about you, and ask them- if required, to delete some or all of the information. The company or organisation has to do this within 30 days or they are in breach of the GDPR regulation Scam Callers, we have heard of a marked increase in the number of scam callers recently, there appears to be two common approaches, one is that you answer the phone to a recorded message saying something like “This is your telephone provider and we have detected a broadband fault, to continue press any key

38 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2018

on your telephone keypad…” if you do this you will be connected to someone who wants to connect to your computer. The second approach is from a firm purporting to be Microsoft or on Microsoft’s behalf and they can identified you have a problem with your computer. I both cases we would encourage you to say you will make your own enquiries, however if you let them connect to your computer, your device may be compromised as the security of your machine could be breached, and you need to check there is nothing malicious installed on your machine. If you have doubts that you may be a victim, please call us as we can ensure your machine is clean Solid Sate Drives - can offer a massive speed upgrade to your machine, and the good news is the cost of these drives has fallen recently, with SSD prices starting from £45.00. We can copy all of your information from your existing drive onto the new SSD, ensuring all your programs and data remain intact. Please call for more information.

At the end of May I spent a very enjoyable evening with The Arts Society Bookham at The Old Barn Hall. This friendly and popular group meet once a month to enjoy an art related lecture which is delivered by a guest speaker; each month a different subject. The speakers are selected by the programme secretary and are booked up for the year ahead. The group also have the opportunity to go on a number of day visits throughout the year, which again are of an artistically varied nature and are sure to include something for everyone. As well as this, a few trips away are also organised each year. None are compulsory, but if the subject or location appeals, the opportunity to attend is there… On the evening I attended, the lecture was entitled ‘Inspired by Stonehenge’ and was delivered by Mr Juhen Richards. Juhen studied archaeology at Reading University and his passion for Stonehenge has spanned some 38 years! He is an author and a TV and radio presenter. Quite frankly, what he doesn’t know about

this mysterious circle of stones, seems hardly worth worrying about! He wrote ‘The Guide to Stonehenge’, which has been translated into 9 different languages! And most recently, a wonderful children’s book called ‘ The Amazing Pop-Up Stonehenge’ . Although his lecture wasn’t entirely about Art, he gave examples of how Stonehenge has provided inspiration for many great artists over the years, such as William Blake, Constable and Turner. Juhen spoke about what makes this ancient circle of stones so special. For example, it contains a number of different types of stone, none of which are local. These stones weigh up to 3 1/2 tons and came from areas some 25 miles away, and some even as far as 125 miles west of the site. How this happened is a mystery, not an easy question to answer. The structure has been in place for centuries, in fact, it is thought that the circular dip in the landscape which surrounds it, has been there since 500 BC!

There is no proven evidence as to how the movement of the stones was achieved, or how the huge stone components were finally lifted into place. Even the shaping of the stones is amazing. With no tools available, many hours of work to shape them, must have proved an arduous task. Each piece is designed to fit into another, to create a firm & secure hold. On examination, examples of joints still in use today were visible, such as tongue and grove joints. Quite extraordinary! The stones have now been in place for four and a half thousand years. There is an avenue leading up the valley, which takes you to the site. It provides a gradual reveal as you near the location, giving an impression that this was an important landmark. In the1950’s it was noticed that the stones showed evidence of decoration; faint impressions of axes and Yourdaggers text texthere here can be seen if you know where to look! There are several ideas/theories about what the site was originally used for but the main theories are either as

an early burial ground or a special place for healing, or maybe both. There is evidence of some human remains buried near by. Famous for alignment with the sun, during both the summer solstice and the winter equinox, visitors still come from far and wide at these times. For the rest of the year, you have to view the stones from afar, as the area has firm restrictions in place to protect this ancient and mystical site. This alignment is no coincidence, and shows the high level of knowledge & intellect at play during construction. This was a fascinating lecture which was very well delivered. Many thanks go to The Arts Society Bookham for your kind invitation and also to Juhan Richards, I had a great evening. If you would like to know more about joining this fabulous group do give the membership secretary a call on 01372 454151.

D I R EC T O R GRAHAM POUNTNEY

Director and Producer of JOURNEY’S END

P r o d u c e r , director, actor and communications skills coach, Graham grew up in East Horsley, and now lives locally in Leatherhead. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and his 45 year career has encompassed Film, TV, Rep theatre, the Royal National Theatre and of course the West End. Amongst his TV and Film work has been Howard’s Way, Goodbye Mr. Chips with Martin Clunes, and EastEnders! Over the last 45 years he has also been a founder and leading player of the British Actors Theatre Company, a director of The Original Shakespeare Company, and the Associate Artistic Director of the Leatherhead Theatre Rep Company. Graham founded Theatre Reviva! , his own theatre

48 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2018

company, in 2017 so as to bring regular, seasonal, theatre productions back into the local area. Journey’s End, set in 1918 and hailed as an anti-war classic, is his biggest and most ambitious production to date. The play is a gripping, classic drama about a group of British soldiers in the trenches in the First World War and he is hugely pleased to be presenting this at his local Theatre. It’s first performance in 1929 featured Laurence Olivier in the lead role! And this production also has a cast of notable local actors, and some exceptional sound effects. The 2 venues will be transformed so as to celebrate the centenary of the War’s end, and to help provide a memorable evening. Not satisfied with just the theatre, Graham founded in 2014 the Surrey Hills Community Radio station; and recently set-up LAUNCHPAD, a social enterprise to help young people build up their self-belief and learn employability skills. He is also a partner, with his wife Suki, in Centre Stage Dance and Drama, a dance school based in Oxshott, and Theatretrain, a Saturday Musical Theatre school, run from Royal Kent School, Oxshott. www.theatre-reviva.com

TotsAlive BIRTHDAY PARTY

In May TotsAlive! celebrated its 36th birthday. The celebration began with the children ringing the bells, as usual, and included singing, instruments, and even some dancing. We had puppets, who were greeted with much noisy excitement, and Alan joined us for an interactive storytelling of The Lost Sheep. A large cake we all blew out the candles on (cling-wrapped so it could be eaten after!) was a big hit too. As well as all the usual fun we had a party tea which a few older siblings, with happy memories of TotsAlive! from their younger days, came to help finish up after school.

52 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2018

TotsAlive! welcomes all under 5s and their parents/ grandparents/ carers/ childminders. Each week our team are there to chat over tea, listen and play - guess who does what! There’s a variety of toys and activities, including a baby area, and some exciting new resources for this term. TotsAlive! meets every Wednesday of term, 1.303.30pm in St Nicolas Church Room, with a short toddler-friendly, time in church at 2pm! We’d love you to join us. REVIEW SEAT ATECA BY TED MACAULEY

Seat’s first full-blooded crossover, the Ateca, an all rounder of extra-special quality and value for money, goes ever so smoothly to the top of the extremely hotly congested SUV class. And that is not just my opinion. It has been voted a winner at car shows all over the place. No wonder. Versus the solidly established likes of SUV rivals VW, Skoda, Peugeot, Mazda, Nissan, Hyundai, Renault, and KIA, and the rest the Seat brainboxes and designers have thoughtfully and astutely challenged the formidable fray with this surefire seller. Okay, I accept the Ateca shares plenty with the slightly bulkier Tiguan, which hails from its parent Volkswagen Group, but it revels on the same wheelbase as its Seat sibling, the five-door Leon, which makes it a handy familysized package. Seat, allowed to borrow the know-how and the working gear and hardware from VW, have made the fullest use of the facility and have accelerated immediately to the front of the SUV jam reach, height. So, what do you get for your hard-earned? It maybe a firsttime entrant in to the class by Seat, but it feels like they have been reaping rewards for ages with a five-seater that romps untroubled over rough, bottom-of-the-garden territory or lopes along smoother tarmacs to the supermarket where its considerable big and practicable double-floor boot easily swallows up a week’s shopping. Six-footer dad and leggy mum, along with offspring who like to jostle and restlessly spread their presence are no problem at all for the spacious interior with its cushy seats and its compact array of instruments and dials on a clearview panel.

54 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2018

As for your need for ease of a ride on treks over a good few miles, there is a really massive amount of adjustment available to the seating. Front and back. Also, the steering wheel can be set to ensure that just about any size of waistline may fit snugly and safely to be safely accommodated behind it.The front-wheel drive guides it safely and steadily in to corners with hardly any roll -even if you are the adventurous type who gets a kick out of throwing your transport into the most testing roundabouts. Overall, Seat clearly felt that their offering had to be a winner from the off - and, bless ‘em, they managed to do that with their fully justifiable global reward as “ Best in Its Class” for space, styling, quality and sheer driving enjoyment....the baseline requirement in my opinion. Well...that..and economy. And that’s another top scoring issue. My happy tripper gave me 60-odd miles to the gallon, Cobham to Brighton, for a sunny break, on about two gallons. Woweee!! An optional goodie or two, but not on my model, include fulsome LED-headlights, surround-view cameras and a radar cruiser. At traffic jam tortoise speeds it thinks for you and will accelerate, steer and guide itself and put the brakes on if needs be. So sit back and relax.... It all, I promise, adds up to the reasons why you would want an SUV. SUV? Allow me to give an alternative explanation to its initials...Special Utter Value. The five models, two petrol, three diesel, range from £18,340-£31,260. Specification: my tester mode 1.4SI. 150bhp. Speed 0-62 in 8.5s.Mpg 64.2. Price £23,885.Warranty three years/60,000 miles.

LOOKING FOR

DOG

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

INNER WHEEL BOOKHAM & HORSLEY

Barn Dance raises a terrific £2,400 for the Parkinson’s Society

Our club had the hard knock of having to cancel our hugely successful Overseas Charity tea in March as it happened to be the very worst of our snow-hit days when travel from all over the South of England to Bookham became an impossibility. Thankfully, many of our guests were generous enough to allow us to send their ticket money as a donation to the Coco Foundation which somewhat eased the hurt of having to cancel. However, undaunted, we set about running a barn dance in the wonderful private Tithe Barn in Little Bookham which is owned by our then President’s daughter, Caroline Nicholls. This lovely lady was an immense help in persuading her numerous friends to come and enjoy a splendid evening with fairy lights, balloons, a live band and food! What more could anyone want?

60 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2018

Our evening managed to raise a terrific £2,400 odd for the Parkinson’s Society which thrilled Betty, whose own husband had suffered from this awful illness and who subsequently died a few days later. This, then, was a wonderful tribute in his memory. Our club enjoys an excellent meal at Effingham golf club once a month with often a good speaker to entertain us. We also plan several theatre outings in the near future. Sadly, our club was knocked out of the Inner Wheel Skittles cup, but we shall battle harder next winter to win it. If you would like to know more about the wonderful work that Inner Wheel do both home and overseas, as the largest Women’s organisation in the World, with a seat on the Women’s committee of the United Nations then please ring us on 01372 452090.

Bookham and other Surrey Libraries will be holding the Summer Reading Challenge throughout the school summer holidays. This year it is called “Mischief Makers”, inspired by the Beano which celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2018. Children aged 4 - 11yrs are all encouraged to take part and it is for everyone regardless of their reading ability. Taking part is easy and free. Just visit Bookham or any Surrey library to sign up from late July onwards. Library staff will also be visiting local schools to inspire the children to join in. The challenge is to borrow and read six or more library books or audio books of their choice, through the summer, earning stickers and other free rewards along the way, finishing with a certificate. Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge helps children to become more fluent, confident and happy readers. We are also looking for volunteers to help out with the Summer Reading challenge to guide children and their parents through the sign-up and reward process and spend time with participants, talking to them about the books they have read and during quieter periods you can help us tidy the children’s section, shelve books or create related activities. Come in to the library to chat about the role. Volunteers will need to complete an online form on the Surrey Libraries website. https://tinyurl.com/yckk8z2j
