WELCOME TO OUR JUNE ISSUE OF LOOK LOCAL!
As we slide ever closer to the summer season, Bookham Village Day is just around the corner. This year, the theme is ‘Flying’ and I’m looking forward to seeing all the different costumes in the street parade which, I’m sure, will represent flight in a wide variety of ways. Let’s hope that the weather is kind to us this year. As always, I expect it will be a fun-filled day. Do come and visit us at our stand and say hello, we’d love to see you! You never know, you might even win one of our little competitions on the day. Of course, Village Day is just one part of Village Week in Bookham, with the wonderful ‘Open Gardens’ following on the Sunday. See inside for details on these and more great events happening during the week. We are also delighted to share a feature about Kim Raine’s ‘Babes on the Run’ this month, a fun and effective fitness group which is held outside whenever possible. Kim’s enthusiasm and encouragement really add to the sessions which are genuinely enjoyed by the fun group of lovely ladies who attend. If you are keen to ‘get fit’, this is a really nice way to achieve your goals. A new theatre group is coming to town this summer. We met local actor Graham Pountney who is also the Director of ‘Journey’s End’ and the founder of ‘Theatre Reviva’ which will be performing this touching play about life in the trenches in 1918. This production is to commemorate and mark the centenary of the end of WW1. Details for ticket bookings can be found on page 14. It promises to be a memorable tribute. It’s competition time again, folks - ‘The Dire Straits Experience’ is coming to G-Live in Guildford on 22nd June. Why not have a go at answering the question? It should be a great night out! There is lots more local news for you to discover as you turn our pages this month. I hope you enjoy the read. Until next time, do take care

Q&A INVISALIGN
What is Invisalign GO?
Invisalign GO is a new & simplified approach that gradually straightens your teeth using clear aligner technology. No brackets & wires, & none of the restrictions that come with metal braces!
How will Invisalign straighten my teeth?
Invisalign will create a unique, digital treatment plan that maps out the exact movements of your teeth - so you can see the end result before you have even begun! Your Invisalign clear aligners are then designed to apply the right amount of force to the right place at the right time, moving your teeth into their new position littleby-little.
Will anyone be able to tell I’m wearing braces?
tree surgery / aboriculture / landscaping / garden - property maintenance
limitlesstreecare.co.uk
07932 389 416 limitlesstreecare.paul@gmail.com
Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, so you can undergo the whole treatment with little worry that people will even notice you are wearing them!
How many hours per day should I wear my aligners?
In order to achieve the best results, we recommend you wear your Invisalign GO clear aligners 20-22hrs a day only removing them to eat, drink & clean your teeth.
How often do I change my aligners, and how often do I need to come into the practice?
You will change your aligners yourself at home weekly at each appointment we will usually send you away with 4-6 weeks’ worth of aligners to keep you going until your next visit to us here at Astek Dental Centre.
How do I get started with Invisalign treatment?
Give us a call or email to book your FREE consultation & see if Invisalign is for you!

RUNNING?
One morning just a few weeks ago, I set off for Leatherhead and arrived at the Leatherhead Leisure Centre at 6.15am. With just the rabbits for company, I went looking for my final destination. I was meeting up with Kim Raine and her Babes on the Run. Now, I am definitely a morning person, but even I was a bit sceptical as to how I would feel about a workout at that time of the morning. Weather permitting, the group works outside, giving their bodies a full workout whilst topping up their Vitamin D! The peace and quiet of the surroundings is a real tonic for body and soul. The 45 minute session is quite brisk but gives everyone the chance to work at their own pace and ability. Unlike many fitness workouts, the exercises are given a time limit, not a quantity... 45 second bursts with 10 second breathers. ‘Don’t let the name put you off,’ Kim says The Babes ‘There is a
on the Run BABES? Body Confident Adventurous Beautiful Empowered femaleS
Babe inside us all, we just need to let her out!’ These ladies are not a bunch of lycra-clad posers, worrying about what they look like as they work out, but rather, a friendly group of women who want to lose some fat (and keep it lost!), feel great and up their energy levels too. On the Run? NO! This is NOT a running group, but a place for like-minded busy women to support and inspire each other on a journey to be the best versions of themselves they can possibly be. The “run” bit is about the fact that most women are time-poor and always ‘on the RUN’, looking after families, elderly parents, holding down full or parttime jobs or keeping up with friends. All these things get in the way of us working out and leading a healthier lifestyle. Many of the women I spoke to had been going to Kim’s classes for 2 years or more. Stories of why they joined and what they had achieved varied. One member, Adele, has a very inspiring story; she was feeling pretty low, even a little depressed about not feeling at all fit. She lacked energy and even found it an effort to play with her young daughter. She joined Babes on the Run
,ymmut rettafl a • & shgiht remrfi • ni ...ygrene erom sdaol •
nosebab@nimda 570
and hasn’t looked back. Adele was Babe of the Year 2017. She has lost 66lbs and is now working towards a personal trainer qualification herself! Adele also motivates the other BABEs with her transformation tips. What do you get if you sign up? I’m really keen to try this group, but I worry about committing to something I won’t be able to keep up. Kim has that sorted. You can sign up for a ‘one week, 7 day, fat lose taster week’, a chance to see if Babes on the Run is for you. If you like it, you can sign up for the remaining 3 weeks of the 4 week course. In those 4 weeks, there will be 12 workout sessions (3 a week). There is also a nutrition plan, coaching advice and a 100 page manual which gives a greater understanding about what you want to achieve and how to achieve it. There is an online members site with workout videos, recipes, online coaching, lifestyle advice and so much more. If you are size 8 or size 28, aged 22 or 72 and want to make some changes to your health, fitness and energy levels, this is the group for you. Stop wishing. Start living. Go on. I dare you! For more details, go to: www.surreybootcamps.com
HAVE YOU STOPPED SEEING RESULTS FROM YOUR WORKOUT, OR EVEN WORSE, GAINED WEIGHT AND GETTING INJURIES?
If you repeat the same workout, such as running or spinning, the body adapts in just 4 weeks, the energy expenditure drops, ie you find it easier and therefore the body needs to use less energy to get results. This is when you plateau, slowing your weight loss. Doing more of the same will not bring back those initial results and could lead to injuries from the repetitive movements and strains on your joints. HERE’S HOW TO KEEP YOUR WORKOUTS FRESH AND THE RESULTS COMING! 1. Keep your body on its toes – if the exercise is getting too easy, then crank it up. 2. Keep the body guessing, swap squats for lunges, running for rowing, kettlebells for dumbbells. 3. Renew your workout every few weeks 4. Beware of overtraining, as the body will conserve extra energy leading to diminishing returns and injury. Take a day off! 5. Alter the intensity, frequency and duration of your workouts 6. Join our next taster weeks on 28th May or 25th June and keep your body guessing!

BARBECUE LAMB FILLET WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATOES, BASIL & GOAT’S CHEESE Barbecue season is with us and this is just one of the recipes that I teach. Historically, this has been a men-only workshop – but it doesn’t have to be! Delicious tender lamb, oozing with flavour and fantastic served with griddled bread, home-made herby garlic butter and quick roasted cherry tomatoes. Bring a gang down and learn how to make some wonderful new summer bbq food and check out the new raised beds brimming with organic veg!
Ingredients: Method: 3 lamb neck fillets (approx 1kg), trimmed of sinew 3 cloves garlic, crushed Freshly ground black pepper 125g mild fresh goat’s cheese 12 sun-dried tomatoes in oil, roughly chopped 12 large leaves fresh basil, roughly chopped 1 tbsp olive oil Ground sea salt 6 bamboo skewers soaked in water
1. Take one lamb neck fillet and carefully slit along one side, about ¾ of the way through. Open the fillet out so it is a long rectangle. Repeat for the remaining fillets. Cut each fillet in half so you have 6 ‘logs’. 2. Lay the fillets out on the worktop. Smear the crushed garlic over the lamb and season with black pepper. Spread the goat’s cheese on top, followed by the sundried tomatoes and basil. 3. Fold over the meat and secure each fillet with a bamboo skewer. 4. Brush the olive oil over the lamb, season all sides with salt and pepper and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes before cooking. 5. Preheat the barbecue. Clean the griddle with an oiled cloth. 6. Turn the barbecue to a medium setting. Place the lamb on the griddle and sear for about 3 minutes or until they have good markings (barbecue hood down if you can). Turn them over and repeat on the other side. Turn the heat down and continue to cook for a further 5-10 minutes. Test the meat to see if it is cooked with a thin metal skewer pressed into the centre of the lamb. If it is hot, the lamb is ready to be removed from the heat and allowed to rest for 5 minutes in a warm place before eating. 7. Remove the skewer & slice the lamb fillets into 5 pieces on an angle to serve.

In addition, Gracewell Care Home will open their gardens for the first time and we welcome back Manor House School, The Grange Centre (with its Victorian walled garden) and Little Bookham Allotments. We are following this year’s Village Day theme - ‘birds, bees, bugs and butterflies’ which is applicable to us too, for all our gardens are a haven for them. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme which is available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk Proceeds go towards the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall where delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks will be served throughout the day. BOOKHAM TO FLY ON
VILLAGE DAY THE OLD BARN HALL, CHURCH RD KT23 3PQ - www.bookhamcommunityassociation.org
A highlight of Bookham’s year is Village Week, which begins on Saturday 16th June with Village Day. Bookham Takes Flight is this year’s theme - birds, bugs, bees and butterflies and all things that fly. Village Day is sponsored by The Vineries Garden Centre and new attractions during the afternoon in the field behind the Old Barn Hall in Church Road will include an exciting birds of prey flying show, and a climbing wall for all to try. The day begins at 11.30am with the big parade starting in the High Street where children from local playgroups and infant schools, dressed in costumes interpreting the flight theme, will parade to the Old Barn Hall. Jazz and steel bands will accompany them, and when they reach the arena prizes will be awarded for the best costumes in each group. Non-stop arena events include not only the flying demonstration by Henfield Birds of Prey, sponsored by Elio’s Barbers and Di Carlo hair salon, but also music from singer Natalie Goodacre, the Band from the Pub and Steelpans. Local schools and Action Theatre will also entertain. The exciting climbing wall is provided by Churches Together of Bookham. A Punch and Judy show, children’s roundabout, bouncy castle, slide and Bocketts
Farm animals are just some of the entertainments. The field and Hall will be filled with more than 50 stalls and sideshows run by local organisations, many of them decorated. The popular open-air bar will have a selection of real ales. Refreshments include burgers and hot dogs, with lunches and teas served all day in the Old Barn Hall, plus cold drinks and ice cream on the field. The aim of Village Day and Village Week is to have a great time and raise funds for Bookham Community Association to maintain the Old Barn Hall and produce the quarterly Bookhams Bulletin. Events during Village Week, mainly in the Old Barn Hall, include on Sunday 17th June Bookham Open Gardens with around 14 gardens open and refreshments at the Old Barn Hall. Monday 18th June Bridge Lunch hosted by Bookham Afternoon Bridge Club at 11.30am and Mole Valley Silver Band concert at 7.30pm. Tuesday 19th June Quiz Night for BCA affiliated members’ teams, and on Friday 22nd June Family Barn Dance at 7.30pm, tickets adult £6 children £3. ROTARY BRINGS
WEST END QUALITY to Bookham to support international education charity
One of the refugee children benefiting from Aprender’s work in Lebanon
The GSA singer-dancers
Aprender’s Phil Hawkins & Rachael Underwood in the Chouf mountains of Lebanon, the location of the preschool.
It was, after all, May 4th, and one could certainly feel the force in the Old Barn Hall! The Rotary Club of Bookham and Horsley organised a fundraiser for Aprender, a charity based right here in our village which makes a huge difference to refugee schools in Lebanon, bringing hope and a brighter future to traumatised Syrian refugee children. The Guildford School of Acting Singers (GSA), which has produced such stars as Bill Nighy, Michael Ball, Celia Imrie and Richard Lumsden, produced a simply outstanding performance of musical theatre, mixing classical favourites with contemporary hit numbers. A packed audience heard Aprender’s Phil Hawkins and Rachael Underwood kick off the evening with a presentation about the charity. Look Local readers may recall recent articles about their new pre-school that opened in November for 35 refugee children – their first ever school! Phil and Rachael had spent the week in the Chouf mountains between Beirut and the Syrian frontier, running workshops for the 6 teachers, all trained by them. The audience heard how, in many respects, the refugees needing help were just like the wonderful people of Bookham. Phil told a story of a husband and wife, a dentist and architect, who had just
26 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
2 hours to flee and had to leave behind their home and life to escape the extremists. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the scale of the crisis”, Phil explained, “with over 250,000 refugee children in need of a school place” and went on to challenge “you can either watch history happen or be a part of changing history.” Through the Rotary family, Aprender have been able to meet with Beirut Rotary who want to support and help expand the pre-school programme, which is great news. It was then on with the show and what a show it turned out to be! The GSA team of young people were top quality. The professionalism of voice, choreography and character shone through the whole evening which included performances from shows such as West Side Story and Les Misérables, together with modern hits. Aprender would like to thank Bookham and Horsley Rotary for their passion, commitment and support – it was an unforgettable night and one all will treasure for many years to come. Funds raised will help expand the education programme and train local coaches. If you would like to support Aprender’s vision, please visit their website at www.aprender.co.uk and click the donate button.

EXPERIENCE THE DIRE STRAITS
Win tickets to the acclaimed live show from former Dire Straits touring member Chris White at G Live Friday 22nd June.
Win tickets to see The Dire Straits Experience, the acclaimed live show from former Dire Straits touring member Chris White at G Live Friday 22nd June. Bringing back to life, the music of one of the most creative and unique bands in rock music… Over 25 years have passed since Dire Straits disbanded, leaving a catalogue of some of the finest compositions and musical performances that the heyday of rock ever produced. If anything, their reputation has only grown with time. It was against the backdrop of a two-decade break - and an increasing demand to hear one of the most dramatic songbooks in rock history played live again – that former members of Dire Straits, Alan Clark, Chris White and Phil Palmer formed The Straits for a charity show at The Royal Albert Hall in 2011. With the prolific Knopfler enjoying an incredibly successful solo career, Alan Clark called upon the singer-songwriter, Terence Reis, to front the band in his absence. By the time The Straits ended, three and a half years later, the band had played more than 150 shows in 25 countries around the world. However, an invitation to play a series of shows in New Zealand and Australia saw Chris White and Terence Reis collaborating again for The Dire Straits Experience. Joining them is a stellar band of some of the finest professional musicians the UK has to offer. Between

them, they have worked with an enviable list of rock royalty that includes, amongst others, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Sam Brown, Elton John, Joe Cocker, Nik Kershaw, George Michael, Jamiroquai, The Killers, The Waterboys, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Midge Ure, Albert Lee and Tom Jones. Chris White said; “In Terence Reis, I think we may have found the only person on the planet that is able to play and sing like Mark, but maintain his own integrity and identity. Because of his respect for Mark, Terence is able to perform these songs in a very honest way that allows his energy and talent to come through.” Friday 22nd June – Guildford G Live

Did the words, “Why her?” go round in your brain, And the reply, “Why not?” be the mocking refrain. It wasn’t often that you used to meet, Just accidentally in the street, But though it was only once in a while, You were warmed by her interest, her lovely smile, But also felt a certain unease As she chatted frankly about her disease. We all zoom along at a reckless rate, Breathlessly busy, afraid to be late. So do find time to enjoy your friends For suddenly it’s too late to make amends For contacts lost and calls not made, And the memories you have soon start to fade With time, till it almost seems That what friendship you had was the stuff of dreams.

Lucy Fenson, a remarkably committed and dedicated lady from England, runs a donkey sanctuary in Israel. As working animals, they are often overworked, abused and endure very poor conditions. With very little care for their welfare, they often suffer ill health, blindness and injuries that are not attended to. Lucy, through her charity work, rescues these animals and brings them to her sanctuary in Israel to treat and care for them and allow them to live out their days in the safety and security of the sanctuary. Lucy is often called out to emergencies, day or night, along with a vet when needed, to treat the donkeys or offer advice. There are currently 37 donkeys and 4 horses at the sanctuary. Lucy’s work is entirely dependent on donations. If you would like to learn more about her work, please go to www.lucysdonkeyfoundation.org.uk

MATTERS GAR DE N ING
HOW TO REFELT A SHED ROOF? Cecelia John: 01372 200 000
|
It’s June and allegedly summer, so now’s the time to do the jobs that are too demoralising to do in the winter when it’s cold and miserable. And off we go with refelting a shed roof, a job that isn’t hard but does require a dry day, ideally. First of all, remove any existing timber fascia boards. Use a claw hammer to remove the nails holding down the old roofing, then strip off the old felt. Make sure the surface is clear of debris and sticking out nails - if you come across one, simply pull it out or hammer it down flat. Measure the roof of your shed. You’ll need enough felt to cover the entire area of the roof with a little bit extra on each edge (approximately 5cm) to allow for overlaps at the eaves and at the gable ends (approximately 7.5cm). For most sheds, you’ll need to cut three pieces of felt, one for each side of the roof, as well as a third section that will overlap the two side panels by about 30cm on each side and run along the top ridge of the shed. Place the cut felt on either side of the roof, pulling it tight so that it lies flat. Then nail it down at approximately 10cm intervals along the length of the roof, just below the apex. Hammer in the nails along
42 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk the bottom edge of the roof too, but you can do this at wider intervals, approximately one every 30cm. Once you’ve fixed the side panels in place, add the top section to the ridge and fix it down, using high performance felt adhesive. Don’t be tempted to get something too cheap…before very long, there will be flapping noises and you will feel depressed. Apply it with a paintbrush so that it is evenly distributed and is tidy, then nail it down at the lower edge at 5cm intervals. Tidy up the overhang at each corner by folding it down and nailing it securely. Use a Stanley knife to cut a slit in the felt overhang at the apex of the roof – it would be a great idea to wear gloves at this point, blood stains spoil the look of a new roof – then fold the felt down there and nail securely at 10cm intervals along the gable. You can then re-attach the fascia boards, and, to keep your shed looking smart, hide the folded-over roofing felt under them at each gable end. Use wood nails to secure them in place and the Stanley knife to trim away any excess material. Finally, working along the sides of the shed, tuck the felt overhang up and under and hammer in nails to hold it in place. Et voilà, a shed roof which looks brand new. Hooray for us.
FLOWER SHOW RHS HAMPTON COURT PALACE
The Lifestyle Gardens In this year marking the centenary of votes for women, the RHS is celebrating women in the industry. Four Lifestyle Gardens, each geared towards a different hobby or way of life & designed by up and coming female designers, will provide plenty of ideas for visitors to grow a garden they love. ‘The Health and Wellbeing Garden’, designed by Alexandra Noble, encourages visitors to move along a continuous path that loops around with no start or end point to inspire a sense of being in the moment. All plants selected have medicinal, edible or fragrant properties to heighten the senses. Creating a space ideal for socialising, Anca Panait has designed ‘The Entertaining Garden’. Inspired by the popular spirit, gin, the garden will see a range of traditional and more unusual botanicals alongside a bespoke outdoor bar for entertaining on a long summer’s evening. ‘The Style and Design Garden’ by Ula Maria combines style & design, creating a contemporary interpretation of an orchard in an urban setting, inspired by an antiquarian’s eccentric lifestyle, world travels & passion for antiques. Lilly Gomm’s garden will be fun, functional and familyfriendly. ‘The Family Garden’ is a space to live life, for adults to unwind and children to explore. The design will be relaxed & will immerse visitors in nature, with much of the planting chosen to support & attract
wildlife while providing a space to learn more about the environment. Show Gardens Steve Dimmock and Paula Holland present ‘The RNIB Community Garden’, a sensory experience to celebrate RNIB’s 150 years & inspired by Dimmock’s own temporary sight loss. A safe & accessible space, it creates a sense of unity rather than the isolation often associated with sight loss. ‘The Children with Cancer UK in collaboration with Mr. Men / Little Miss Ltd’ have joined forces to showcase the charity’s work over the past 30 years. Designer Emma Reed sets the garden within the home of the Mr. Men characters to highlight the resilience and emotional experiences of families living with cancer. Other highlights include ‘The South West Water Green Garden’ by newcomer Tom Simpson which showcases the sustainable management of rainwater, and Rhiannon Williams returns with ‘The Landform Garden Bar’ which embraces a modern alfresco lifestyle. The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will run from 2 – 8 July with a Preview Evening held on Monday 2 July. For more info or to buy tickets, visit: www.rhs. org.uk/hamptoncourt We are delighted to announce the winners from last month’s RHS completion, each of whom win a pair of tickets to go to this year’s RHS Hampton Court Flower Show. JENSEN DAVID
AND HIS SUPPORT FOR
PARKINSON’S UK
David Jensen and his support for Parkinson’s UK In January, David Jensen revealed that he had Parkinson’s and became a VIP Supporter for the charity Parkinson’s UK. Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological condition, for which there currently is no cure, and symptoms include tremor, slowness of movement and rigidity. At the time of his announcement, David said that he had been living secretly with the condition for five years. He spoke about how he was nervous about being open about his condition previously as he feared that people ‘might think less of him’. But David was encouraged to ‘come out’ by other high-profile celebrities, including Billy Connolly and Sky Sports presenter Dave Clark, who have been open about their own struggles with Parkinson’s. More about Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s UK Parkinson’s affects 145,000 people in the UK, around one in 350 of the population. People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine because some of the nerve cells that make it have died. It is not yet known exactly why people get Parkinson’s, but researchers think it’s a combination of genetic and environmental factors that cause the dopamine-producing nerve cells to die. Parkinson’s UK estimates that there are more than 40 symptoms of Parkinson’s. These range from physical symptoms such as tremor and muscle stiffness, to depression, anxiety, hallucinations, memory problems and dementia. But Parkinson’s affects everyone differently. Parkinson’s more often affects people over the age of 65, but can affect anyone at any time. No current medication is able to slow down or stop the spread of the condition, leaving those affected with severely limited treatment options. In 1969, the charity Parkinson’s UK was founded in a one-room office in Putney by a woman called Mali Jenkins. Mali’s sister, Sarah, had been living with Parkinson’s for some time.
48 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
Since then, it has created comprehensive information and services for everyone affected by Parkinson’s, including a helpline and local advisors across the UK, plus it has funded and championed the Parkinson’s specialist nurse service, which is now working in the majority of UK regions and providing tailored advice and support. The charity has invested more than £80m in groundbreaking research – it has discovered key genes involved in the condition, opened the largest tissue bank dedicated to Parkinson’s science in Europe and funded the world’s biggest in-depth study of people with the condition. Get involved Parkinson’s UK is completely dependent on donations, and with summer on the horizon, it is calling on people to get ready to welcome the sun and bring the fun, by hosting a Garden Gathering to raise funds so that it can continue its vital work. Garden Gathering is a feel-good fundraiser that encourages people to host events in their gardens or favourite outdoor spaces for family and friends this summer. For more information on hosting your own Garden Gathering for Parkinson’s UK and to download a fundraising pack, please visit www.parkinsons.org. uk/gardengathering

AUTHOR ONLY HALFWAY THERE
One woman’s journey of calligraphy, cancer, colour and caring.
Janice, whom I have known for many years, is a real whirlwind of energy. She lives her life at such a pace that although I thought I knew a lot about her, I realised that I really didn’t. Well, not the details, anyway. She is never one to dwell on things, so you can’t either. Although I knew the headlines, some of the details were lost as she moves onto the next part of her journey and sweeps you along with her. What I have always known is that she is kind, caring, deeply spiritual, interesting and interested, knowledgeable, motivated and motivating, charismatic, energised and energising and only gives 100% to everything she does, be it learning calligraphy or beating cancer or caring for and about people or writing a book! Her book “Only Halfway There” is a brief snapshot of her life, the highs and lows, funny stories and interesting
facts, including her decision to go to university at the age of nearly fifty to study for a degree, teaching adult education, her diagnosis of cancer, her brush with royalty, amazing commissions for her work, learning new skills to help people with cancer and training to be a colour healer and holistic practitioner. In true Janice style, the book of Janice moves quickly and so is only a few pages long. The rest of her book is filled with inspirational prose, poems and examples of her work. Moreover, it leaves you smiling. Enjoy! Only Halfway There is available to purchase from Wishing Well, 7 High Street, Bookham, for only £7 and all the proceeds go to Breast Cancer Now (formerly Breakthrough Breast Cancer). A book launch will also take place on 30th June, 10.30 - 3.30pm at Barton’s Bookshop in Leatherhead.

NEWS FROM
The Bookhams Residents’ Association (BRA)
DO YOU STILL ENJOY READING BOOKS?
Then don’t miss this unique opportunity to visit the extensive collection of books at the Bookhams Residents’ Association bookstall on Village Day on 16th June. The bookstall has always been a major attraction at this annual event and this year will be no exception, with over 2,000 books on display, covering a vast range of subjects. Proceeds from the bookstall are shared between the BRA for village initiatives, such as tree planting, and the BCA towards maintenance of the Old Barn Hall.
This year, there will be more books in ’new’ condition than before, as a number have been donated by people who have really taken care of their purchases and there are bound to be copies of your favourite author on show. So come along and browse and snap up a bargain! We look forward to welcoming you to the BRA marquee.

BOOKHAM LITTER PICK UP
Join us on the first Sunday of the month and keep Bookham tidy Lower Shott Car Park 11.00am
For sometime now, I have had a growing unease about my use of all things plastic. So I have spent quite a lot of time trying to find alternatives and ensuring that I dispose of the plastic I do use responsibly. In January, I received an email from a charity I had been following, “City to Sea”, which campaigns to reduce our use of plastic and find alternatives. Now, I thought I had been doing quite well until I watched the clip of a talk given by Nathalie Fee, the charity’s founder, called “Why plastic is personal”. I urge you to watch it. I watched with horror at the real effects we are having on our marine life and it has made me determined to do more.
54 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
I was delighted when I saw that the Daily Mail had started a campaign, encouraging people to get involved in the “Great Plastic Pick up”. In true Bookham style, Margaret Lawson who organises a monthly litter pick in Bookham to help keep us clean and tidy, garnered extra support on Sunday 6th May to carry out a real blitz on plastic and ensure that it was disposed of properly. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped on this day and the rest of the year. Brilliant Data Storage Solution
and other updates... 01372 370300
sales@tecres.co.uk
www.tecres.co.uk
This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. We love finding a solution that really provides a truly positive benefit whilst solving a multitude of problems, and we have come across a product that does just that. The backing up of our important data is a big issue, regardless of whether it is your business accounts and invoices, or your holiday photos and home documents. There are countless options to solve the problem: local disc, put them on the cloud, copy them on to CD disc when you remember, and so it goes… We have long favoured having a local network-attached storage drive (NAS) and then backing that up to the cloud. This solves two issues: 1. If a machine fails, you can have rapid access to your data 2. If the unthinkable happens at home - a flood, fire or theft - your important stuff is safe at another location. We have been using the latest Synology NAS drive, which has 4 hard drives installed, configured in a Raid 10 structure, so that your stored data is copied onto all the drives. This means that if one of the drives fails completely, your data is still safe and available for use. This particular model comes with some very effective software which can copy your data from your PC, tablet or smartphone, synchronise it with the NAS, and
56 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
then the NAS can publish the pictures on the internet for you to share with your family and friends. By way of example, I have taken some pictures of TecRes and Leatherhead for you to enjoy and made the share on the NAS currently connected at home in Effingham. If you would like to connect and view the pictures, please go on the internet to https://WbHjp45HnIpG.de.quickconnect.to/mo/ sharing/7FVbbAZWK TalkTalk block We use remote control software extensively to support our customers, and as part of TalkTalk’s Internet Crime Prevention, they have placed a block on all remote access software for their broadband customers. We can understand why they are taking these steps and feel that it’s a pretty good thing; however, it does cause inconvenience to some customers. You can remove this block by logging in to your TalkTalk account and disabling the “remote access block” (sorry, we don’t yet know the exact term TalkTalk use as we are not a talktalk customer, but I’m sure it’s quite easy to find). Should you need any additional help, please do get in touch.

REVIEW MINI CONVERTIBLE BY TED MACAULEY
The absolutely marvellous Mini passes a celebratory milestone this year with the 25th anniversary of the convertible, first marketed in 1993, and its iconic presence has hit a ground-breaking record as the best-selling of all convertibles in the UK. At its UK launch as the Cabriolet in 1991, with its roof removed as a trial, it was an instant hit, with all 75 new-look cars selling in a flash, making it one of the rarest Minis ever sold. The interior was luxuriously finished with a leather steering wheel and colour coded seats. It came in two colours, Caribbean Blue with a grey hood and Nightfire Red with matching hood and brand new 12-inch diameter Revolution wheels. Across the years, the Mini has been reshaped, refitted and renewed, as its fanbase reached enormous proportions and sales soared, and now, playing the game of exclusivity again, the company celebrates 25 years of the convertible’s presence with a limited edition. And it is a stunner…. Welcome to the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Mini Convertible…just 300 of them. Not cheap at £32,995, but unique, and guaranteed to be a hot seller to those of us who enjoy extra-special treats on wheels. So what do you get for your hard-earned? The drop-top is based on the Cooper S Convertible and will be in its most luxurious and unique form, with lounge leather upholstery, white mirror caps and 18-inch Mini Vanity alloy wheels in twotone as standard. They will all be painted an eye-catching Starlight Blue with contrasting white bonnet stripes and a woven fabric roof with a Union Jack pattern. A number plaque will be added to signify its anniversary status. So
58 Looklocal Magazine - June 2018
there… The newcomer’s outward appearance may be vastly different from the Cooper S, but there are no changes to its heartbeat, an engine designed to thrill. The 2.0-litre unit remains capable of 189 bhp with 207lbs of torque. It’s a real breathtaker. Foot hard down, and you will zoom from zero to 62mph in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 143mph. Just to complete the specification, it also enjoys the benefit of a superb sat-nav package and a hi-fi system that is a joy. And, hood up or down, this extra-special showcase model looks just great. Okay, there has to be some notso-good and not-too-welcome news, doesn’t there? It is the comparative cost to its entry level Cooper sibling. It is an eye-watering £9165 prici, all due to the additional standard features worked into the Anniversary variant. The success of the Mini’s parent company, BMW - they also produce the Rolls Royce - stamps it as the world’s leading premium manufacturer of cars and motorbikes. It is totally global, with 31 production and assembly facilities in 14 countries and its sales network spreads to more than 140 nations, with a workforce 125,000 worldwide. They are all figures that add up to the surefire success of their painstaking efforts to ensure their products are as finely produced as can be. And that is why they managed to profit to the tune of nearly €10billion on revenues amounting to 95 billion… and it will not stop there if the unique new Mini Convertible is anything to judge by... Specification: Engine 2.0 litre. 192 B HGP. MPG 42 (city) and 59 (Highway) Max speed 143mph. O-62mph 7.2 seconds. Price £32,250.

How would you like to give something back to the community by becoming a school governor for an inspirational local school?
Woodlands School, Leatherhead, is an OFSTED outstanding school for pupils with special needs from 2 to 19. With brilliant staff, pupils achieve amazing things from the education Woodlands provides. Take a look at our website: http://www.woodlands.surrey.sch.uk/ We have a vacancy for a new governor, ideally with a current or previous background in business, finance, HR, project management or similar. The role of school governors is to set the strategic direction and to make sure money is well spent and resources meet the needs of the school. We provide challenge and support to the head teacher. The full governing body
at Woodlands meets once a term. There are also governor sub-committees. Woodlands also has an exciting building project about to start, which will enhance what we can offer the pupils. Governors receive induction training, so you needn’t worry if you have no experience of governance in education. If you would like to find out more, please contact in the first instance our head:

PLEASE ACT NOW TO SAVE EPSOM
GENERAL HOSPITAL Bess Harding MBE gives her personal views
On 13th April 2018, Tom Johnson at the Leatherhead Advertiser reported that a fifth of the site (land including buildings) at Epsom Hospital would be demolished and the land sold to generate £20.5m for repairs. If Epsom is to survive as a functional hospital, sufficient space must be retained for its essential function, as well as for car parking. The land is not surplus to requirements and must certainly not be sold for housing. When one thinks of the thousands of dwellings the government wants built in the hospital catchment, it is obvious that the demands on the hospital, GP surgeries, schools and sewerage and much other infrastructure will be very great. Bizarrely, we are told that infra-structure is “not a planning matter”. We do not want a down-sized hospital. Use social media to spread the word. Once sold, the land has gone forever, and there will be nothing available for future expansion for your children and grandchildren. Our local representatives have failed to attend the routine Hospital Board Meetings; even those on the Health Liaison Committee do not attend to ascertain public opinion. Write to them now and ask why. Write to your MP, the Prime Minister and Surrey County Council. Epsom Hospital is surely worth fighting for. If you don’t act, you may lose it, so write that letter now before the forthcoming local elections. WH Smith and Marks & Spencer have moved into Epsom Hospital, replacing ante-natal, paediatric

outpatients, and the chest clinic. These companies are supposed to bring in revenue to the Hospital Trust, but at what cost to space and facilities for patients? The CEO informed us that Ferguson House at St Helier was not fit for purpose; it was to be demolished to make way for a car park. Consequently, all managerial and other staff were moved to rented accommodation in East Street, Epsom. Now this ‘unfit’ building has been refurbished, providing a new out-patients’ department, a second CT Scanner, a restaurant, a call centre for appointments and a new lift. How could an unfit building be so transformed? What can we believe? What happened to the government grant of millions? How much has been spent on each of the hospitals? The Chief Executive envisages a new acute facility, possibly to be located at Sutton where all consultants will be based. Sutton is not easy to reach, roads are narrow and there are no direct bus routes. Due to its relatively favourable location, any new acute hospital should be at Epsom. There are already two other acute hospitals in the north of our area (St George’s and Croydon) as well as St. Helier, and all are within five miles of each other. The Epsom Guardian says that no member of the public has been in contact about this problem, so please write and express your views to Hannah Walker: 0208 722 6395 or Sophie Jones: 0208 722 6431 sophie.jones@london.newsquest.co.uk

NOTICE SURREY POLICE
DON’T FALL PREY TO CAR THIEVES AT LOCAL BEAUTY SPOTS
As spring finally approaches, I would like to remind residents, dog walkers and ramblers not to fall prey to opportunist thieves when parking their cars at local beauty spots. The beauty spots in and around Mole Valley are plentiful and attract more and more visitors as the weather (hopefully) improves. Unfortunately, they can also be popular places for thieves to visit. Surrey Police is always trying to tackle vehicle crime, but we need motorists to play their part by not leaving property on display. Ask yourself, do you need the property you’re taking with you? If the answer is no, then leave it at home. Even simple measures, such as removing valuable items and taking the boot cover off to show the vehicle is empty, really can make a difference. Here are some top tips to avoid becoming a victim of car crime: •Do not leave anything of value in your vehicle. The most commonly stolen items from cars include sat navs, laptops, handbags and mobile phones. They are easy to remove quickly, are easily concealed and do not look out of place if a thief is seen walking away from a car. • Always take handbags and wallets with you. Even
if your bag does not contain anything valuable, a thief will not know that and may still break a window or force a lock to get at it. • Consider leaving the back seats of your vehicle down or taking the boot cover off. This way, a potential thief will have a clear view that it is empty and will not need to break in to find out. • Make sure doors of your vehicle are locked and the windows and sunroof are shut, no matter how hot the weather, or even if you are only going to be gone for a couple of minutes. • Make sure your car is parked in a location where it is in clear view of other people, not obscured from sight by trees or shrubs, therefore making it vulnerable. • Make sure you do not leave a coat or jacket behind in the car. A thief may think that it is hiding a laptop or handbag and break into your car to find out. • Always remove your in-car radio/CD player if you can and also remove the suction pads which attach a sat nav system. Call 101 for all non-emergency policing matters. Call 999 if you have a genuine emergency requiring the attendance of the police (e.g. a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger).
