Hello again, Bookham,

I do hope you are all well and that you have avoided any flooding. It’s all been quite scary really, hasn’t it, listening to the news, seeing the unimaginable images of so many properties submerged in water, which is increasingly getting nearer and nearer to home. I’m hoping that the norm will apply here, in that historically, every time I mention the weather when writing this message, it’s very different by the time you read this! Let’s just hope the change is for the better, of course, or I will be in big trouble! This month has once again flown by. Along the way, I enjoyed a visit to Astek Dental Centre where I met their newest member of staff, Diane Etherington. Diane is Astek’s new hygienist and she did a fantastic job on my teeth. Dark glasses at the ready, they are positively gleaming now! On an entirely different note, we hear about a new book by local author, Janetta Harvey. Saving Susie-Belle tells the story of a heartwarming animal rescue but also highlights some outrageous practices in the world of animal breeding. Janetta’s story made it to the national press/media and I truly hope the publicity will go some way to changing these barbaric practices. Time for me to go now, but I hope you enjoy this ‘Spring’ issue!

Happy Mothers’ Day to all you mums out there! (That’s 30th March, btw!)

Oh yes, & enjoy Pancake Day too!! (4th March!) Ros x

Astek

Dental Centre

Astek Dental Centre continues to advance and develop. Recent refurbishment brings with it a bright and cheerful waiting area and a selection of beautifully kitted-out treatment rooms. It really does offer a very nice environment for all aspects of dental care, ranging from their routine denture services to cosmetic dentistry, implants, veneers and even mouthguards for sportswear, to name but a few. I was recently invited along to meet their newest member of staff, Diane Etherington, who is a qualified dental hygienist. Diane will be supporting the dental staff at Astek on a part-time basis and her 30 minute appointments are well worth including in your overall dental care. At £45 per visit, they are very good value for money, and if needed, dentures can be cleaned at the same time. As they say, prevention is certainly better than cure when it comes to teeth.

Astek has provided Diane with a newly decorated room to work from and I was invited to ‘take the chair’! As a new patient, Diane started by running through a few basic medical questions, and once the formalities were over, she looked at my teeth. I am pretty lucky and have been blessed with a fairly good set of gnashers, but I must confess to not being very regular with the dental floss. Diane said that my teeth looked in good condition and this is helped by the fact that I use an electric toothbrush. But to maintain good gum health, she advised that I should floss regularly. My teeth are also prone to slight sensitivity with hot or cold temperatures, and as a result, I wondered if the cleaning process might be slightly uncomfortable but it really wasn’t. Diane gave my teeth a thorough clean and polish and a good flossing too! We discussed different types of toothpaste and floss products. She

was very gentle and talked me through each stage of my appointment, asking me to tell her if I was at all uncomfortable at any point. She is really lovely and made my visit very stress-free indeed. At the end, I was delighted to see how clean my teeth looked and felt. I will definitely be back to visit Diane in the future - and I promise to floss every

night! Thank you very much, Astek Dental, I actually enjoyed my visit and it’s not often you can say that where dentists are concerned! For an appointment with Diane or to discuss any other dental requirements, please call 01372 377678. I know you will receive a very warm welcome.

CLEAN 9 I was recently asked to review a Forever Living Clean 9 programme. For the first two days, you have one special shake to drink a day, along with aloe vera, garcinia, bee pollen and lots of water. Day One was fine; I was surprised that I didn’t really feel that hungry. Day Two was a little harder for me but I got through it OK and decided that an early night was a good idea! Once I reached Day Three, I started to feel better and as if I was already starting to lose some weight, but I resisted the urge to stand on the scales! By now, it was also much more manageable because I was able to have two shakes during the day and a 600 calorie meal in the evening. I found myself really looking forward to my evening meal and not worrying so much about the fact that I wasn’t eating in the day. I soon realized how much I pick at food, more out of habit than necessity to be honest, and certainly when I didn’t really need to. In fact, if I did feel a little hungry, I simply drank more water which filled me up. But on the whole, the shakes did a pretty good job of getting me through the day. It is also recommended that you take 20 minutes of fairly gentle exercise, and walking the dogs sorted that out for me.

This 9-day programme is all about cleansing your body and getting it to work more efficiently. Endorsed by doctors and nutritionists, it focuses on losing only body fat. It is a great way to break old habits and start afresh, whilst cleansing your body of unnatural chemicals. The easy-to-follow 9-day programme is designed to kick-start your weight loss, whilst putting you on the right path to take control of your overall health. • My weight loss was more than I expected; I lost 6 lbs over the 9 days. • I feel more energetic. • My skin certainly looks better. • And it was actually easier to stick to than I thought it would be. As part of the programme, you are encouraged to measure various points of your body at the start and end of the cleanse. By doing this, I found that I had an overall total loss of 6 inches which I was delighted with. I am snacking less and feel that I have made a very positive change to my eating habits. I have also felt more energized. Even now, when I am on a tight deadline for work, when I would normally be reaching for the biscuit tin, I don’t feel tempted to stray. I feel much less drawn to

sweet things in general, and with all the talk of sugar in the news, this has to be a very positive step forward! In addition to the Clean 9 programme, I also tried the Forever Trim, Tone & Tighten Aloe Body Toning Kit.This was actually great fun and made my skin feel amazing. You start by cleansing your skin (in the shower or bath) and once dry, you are encouraged to do the measuring exercise at three points, your arms, upper legs and torso, and record your measurements. You then apply the Aloe Body Toner which is a warming and stimulating cream, and you can feel the warmth as you apply it. Now for the fun bit! You literally wrap your arms, torso below the bust and legs above the knees in cling film which you then leave in place for one hour. I watched TV whilst wrapped up not only in cling film, but in my dressing gown too! I could really feel the warming sensation of the body toner working under the layers of plastic. After one

hour, I gently cut away the wrap and rubbed any remaining cream into my skin. To gain maximum benefit, it is recommended that you should not wash for about 3 or 4 hours after the treatment. At this stage, you measure again and yes, all my measurements had reduced and my skin felt amazing. I was advised to repeat this process at the start and end of the cleansing period which I did. This treatment works particularly well in conjunction with the Clean 9 programme, maximizing the effects as well as ensuring a little ‘me’ time, which is certainly a nice bonus too! If you would like to give your body a real treat, start by calling Claire or Gilles for a chat. Their contact details can be found in the advert here and I am sure they will be delighted to hear from you and answer any questions you may have. Thank you both very much for letting me try this amazing programme. I am feeling good!

Discover the private world of society hostess This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mrs Greville, who owned Polesden Lacey and left it to the National Trust in her will. From 1 March, a new display at her former home will reveal the interior design secrets of her private apartment, along with some surprisingly homely artefacts. The apartment’s Edwardian interiors, including a rare surviving marble bathroom, are the work of Ritz hotel architects Mewès and Davis. Thanks to a 2-year research project, the unfurnished rooms can be seen, along with personal items that have been tracked down. Digital graphics and an interactive display show how the apartment used to look, based on inventories and photographs in the archive. The house and apartment at Polesden Lacey will be open seven days a week from 1 March, 12.30 – 5pm weekdays, 11am – 5pm weekends. A new book by Sian Evans called Mrs Greville: The society hostess who collected kings is available from the gift shop at Polesden Lacey.

Saving Susie-Belle In a newly released book, Saving Susie-Belle, Cobham author Janetta Harvey tells the moving true story of how she gave a rescued miniature schnauzer a loving new home. Susie-Belle was saved from the horrific puppy farming industry and the book is not only a celebration of Susie-Belle’s survival and new life, but is also an investigation into the terrible hidden world of breeding puppies for cash.

For over six years, Susie-Belle had been trapped in a life of misery as someone’s commodity, a puppy farm breeding bitc. She was tied up in the back of a filthy agricultural shed, never seeing the outside world, receiving little or no care and experiencing neglect to a horrifying degree. When she was found, her body was so frail, thin and abused that it was thought she would not survive long. Her entire life had been about producing puppies to be sold to dealers, who in turn sold her babies to unwitting puppy buyers via online ads or in pet shops, or from the boot of a car. All these are outlets used by dealers in puppies from commercial breeding places. Puppies are an easy source of cash for the breeders and dealers and are seen as nothing more. The parent dogs like Susie-Belle are kept in cruel confinement for years until they are so worn out or sick that they can no longer produce the goods. Then, and only then, do they leave captivity, and not always into the safe arms of rescuers. For Susie-Belle, peace came before death, as she is one of the lucky ones: that is, if we consider surviving years of loneliness, pain and terror as lucky. For she was rescued, lifted out of the dark and grubby hidden nightmare that is puppy farming and brought to safety. After spending six months in a loving foster home in Berkshire where she underwent essential veterinary care, including sight-saving cataract surgery, eventually, Susie-Belle arrived to live with Janetta and her husband Michel in Cobham.

Now she shares a peaceful home with her two schnauzer sisters and experiences nothing less than complete loving daily care. Where once she was a scabby, nameless creature, she now has a beautiful name, and life these days is good, as good as it can possibly be. Never again will it be anything less for this gentle soul who has suffered at the hands of humans who value commercial profits more than life itself. At rescue, Susie-Belle was severely underweight; now she lives in a home where her diet gets more attention than many humans give their own – Michel is a chef and Janetta is an enthusiastic foodie and they share abundant culinary joy with Susie-Belle. Travelling regularly to France accompanied by SusieBelle and her canine sisters, camping round the UK, meeting other dogs up and down the country, the book tells the story of SusieBelle’s first year out of the dark and on the road to recovery. Saving Susie-Belle is published by John Blake and is available in all good bookshops and as a Kindle edition. Following the tremendously successful book launch party hosted by the very dog-friendly Cobham Bookshop on 2nd February, signed copies are available there at 12 Anyards Road, Cobham. To find out more about puppy farming and to keep up to date with Susie-Belle’s life, follow her on twitter @SusieBSchnauzer, her blog susiefoodie.blogspot.co.uk or find Susie-Belle Schnauzer on Facebook.

Many residents will have seen a number of communications from Mole Valley District Council with regard to the MVDC Green Belt Consultation.

Three papers have been issued online at the MVDC web site www.molevalley.gov.uk :· Green Belt Boundary Review, Update & Sustainability Appraisal Bookham Supplement · Housing & Traveller Sites Plan: Detailed Site Assessments Bookham Supplement · Housing & Travellers Sites Plan Consultation Document Bookham Supplement In discussion, the BRA Planning Committee has reviewed the documents & has a predilection not to relinquish Green Belt land. However, we are told that refusal is not acceptable by Government & any proposals for release will be determined by Mole Valley District Council to meet its need for Housing Development Sites & Traveller Sites. The BRA Planning Committee was determined that, if an area has to be released around Bookham, the prime considerations are that it must:· maintain the physical structure of our community & not sprawl into our surrounding valued landscape; · resist the merging of our separate identifiable community with neighbouring communities; · preserve our close, contained community as a sustainable entity Any development must also be supported by infrastructure enhancements, such as roads, drainage, schools, surgery facilities etc. Bookham has absorbed in-fill development over the last forty years with little enhancement of infrastructure, leading to heavy demand on road space, parking, school places, busy GP practices etc.

38

Based on this evaluation, it is considered that there is no advantage in considering the release of land where a small number of properties are proposed, as there will be no significant contribution to infrastructure enhancements & an inability to get a mix of dwellings. Development should also take into account any needs defined in the forthcoming Neighbourhood Development Plan, as well as delivering small properties as identified in an earlier Bookham Vision Survey. The expressed need for affordable accommodation for young families, as well as older downsizers, would thus maintain the existing balance of our community at a time when our community population is getting older, as identified in the Surrey County Council document “Surrey Uncovered”. Additionally, any impact on our community of Green Belt Housing proposals made by Guildford Borough Council must also be carefully considered, with specific reference to proposals for development in Effingham Parish at the secondary school (Howard of Effingham). Lastly, there is no support for the policy put forward by Mole Valley that every site over three hectares should retain a small part of the site for traveller pitches. Based on these proposed principles, the BRA planning committee will review the assessments offered by MVDC and will prepare their response to the MVDC Consultation. Similarly, Bookham residents are encouraged to review and comment on the MVDC Green Belt Consultation documents. The cut-off date for comments is 7th March 2014.

MEDICAL MATTERS!!

HAYFEVER...

Around one in four of us knows the misery that comes with hayfever every year. It is simply an allergy to pollen, but in extreme cases can mean time off work or school. Different pollens can cause hayfever at different times of the year, but the most common hayfever -inducing pollens come from grass and are usually at their peak in June and July. A diagnosis of hayfever is usually made simply by looking at symptoms, especially in an otherwise healthy individual. We are all familiar with the symptoms of hayfever - the blocked or runny nose, the sneezing and the itchy eyes/throat/mouth. However, symptoms can vary from day to day, depending on the pollen count. We can expect a high pollen count when it is hot and dry and a lower count when it is cooler and wetter. The mainstay of treatment for hayfever is a nonsedating antihistamine. This effectively dampens down the body‘s reaction to the pollen and may be taken as needed throughout the season. It can be bought from your pharmacist without a prescription and without a trip to the GP. If however symptoms are not controlled in this way, it is best to seek further advice. Other treatments include eye drops and an intranasal (up the nose!) steroid spray. Ideally, this spray should be started two weeks before the hayfever season starts. Other tips for managing hayfever include putting Vaseline just inside the nostrils which helps to ‘catch’pollens, shutting windows to keep pollens outside and staying in doors - admittedly not always practical! For more information, have a look at http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/hay-fever/ Pages/Introduction.aspx

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary. • A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can

typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

The Squ re-ab ut Part 2 Last year, Kirsty Thresher wrote an excellent article for Look Local about the Bookham square-about, the junction by St. Nicolas’ Church, which people find rather confusing. She outlined the difficulties that people have in understanding who has priority here, and explained how it should work. I was reminded of the problems again a couple of weeks ago as I stopped there with the church on my left. There were 2 cars already waiting there to my right, and I let the first one go. As I was next in turn, I started to move forward, but had to brake quite hard because the second car simply carried on after the first one. When I shook my head at her, she stopped on the actual square, preventing me from going anywhere, leaned over and mouthed ‘r-o-u-n-d-a-b-o-u-t’ very slowly several times. When researching her article, Kirsty contacted various agencies for clarification. The Community Highway Improvements Team, the police and the local driving instructors all confirmed that • it isn’t a roundabout and should definitely NOT be treated as one – i.e. you should not simply give way to the right every time. • no-one has priority here: there are 4 Give Way signs, indicating that every car approaching the square-about should slow down and give way to each other. PC Tom Arthur, the Roads Casualty Reduction Officer for Mole Valley, said ‘all vehicles should slow and take care at the junction, the same as is expected at any give way junction.’ The local driving instructors

said that they tell their pupils to give way to whoever was at the junction first - in other words, to take it in turns - and this was certainly my understanding. After Kirsty’s article, things did improve slightly, and I was hopeful that there would be a clearer understanding of how to handle this intersection, but unfortunately, many still don’t stop: I’ve seen some horribly close shaves when cyclists, for example, just plough forward, despite the fact that they’re not the next to go. I’m not sure what else the council can do: I went to see if the white lines had degraded, as that might cause confusion, but they are bright and new-looking, and the Give Way signs are clear and obvious. The problem seems to be mainly with drivers/cyclists who approach the square-about from Effingham. I’m pretty sure that many of them won’t be Bookham residents, but just in case, if anyone’s still dubious as to how it should be treated, I’d be more than willing to meet them at the square-about any Saturday or Sunday morning with PC Arthur. Hopefully, this article has helped to consolidate the facts about this tricky little junction. Please take care and stay safe. Cecelia John

SBY&CA Chairman, Trevor Goul-Wheeker, said “It’s incredible to think we opened SPACE just two years ago with only two activities and there are now a dozen or so to choose from. This is a great opportunity for local people to try something new or get back to an activity they used to do, and all for free!” The facilities were opened in 2012, following a major fund-raising and renovation programme, and are located on the Dorking Road, Bookham, the road leading up to Polesden Lacey, just after the Chrystie Recreation Ground. Organisers would ask people to walk to the Spring Fair if possible, as parking might be limited. For more information, visit the website

www.southbookhamspace.org.uk for all the details on the regular activities taking place at the South Bookham SPACE and Outer SPACE or to book the facilities for private parties. The venue is very popular for children’s parties, so please book early!

South Bookham SPACE Spring Fair kicks off with Amanda Warwick Dance Arts on Saturday 15th March and closes with Dorking & Leatherhead Pole Fitness on Sunday 16th March.

SURREY POLICE NOTICE

Neil Clarke, 13363 Neighbourhood Team Co-ordinator Residents asked to remain vigilant following bank-related fraudster scams Surrey Police is warning residents to remain vigilant following an increasing number of reports of scams. These involve fraudsters obtaining cash, bank details and cards, using bogus telephone calls and couriers across the county. On each occasion, the victims reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be a police officer and attempting to convince them to hand over large amounts of cash. The offenders claim to be from the police and use a variety of pretences, including saying that they are trying to catch a member of bank staff who is involved in passing counterfeit money. They convince the victim to draw out a large amount of cash from the bank and arrange to meet them or send a taxi courier to hand it over. The offender tells the victim not to mention anything to the bank staff, as they don’t want to alert them that police are involved, and they assure them that they will not be out of pocket, as the money is counterfeit. Victims are told to call 999 to verify that they are genuine, but the offender keeps the line open, stays on the line and the 999 call goes straight back to the offender, thus convincing the victim the call is genuine. Fortunately, the victims in the most recent offences all realised that the calls were part of a scam and refused to withdraw cash and meet the courier. Other victims have

60

been less fortunate and have lost significant amounts of money. We should emphasise, however, that these fraudsters are very clever and use a range of sophisticated methods to convince people that they are genuine. Under no circumstances will a police officer ask you to withdraw cash, ask for your bank details or PIN. Always report any suspicious activity immediately to the police. Surrey Police advises the following: • NEVER agree to withdraw cash or give out any personal information about your bank account to anybody over the phone. • If someone calls claiming to be a police officer, ask for their identification number, police force and their telephone extension. Advise them that you will call them back on the 101 number. If possible, use a different phone, i.e. a mobile phone, if the call was received on your landline. • Never hand over money or bank cards to someone at the door or elsewhere. • If someone comes to your door claiming to be a police officer, always ask to see their police identification card and take note of their identification number. A real police officer will not mind waiting outside while you call 101 to check if they are genuine. If you have received any calls of this nature, or handed over any money, bank cards or bank details, please call 101 or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk

FIREWOOD ON THE COMMONS

In a previous article, I wrote that I thought residents had the right to collect firewood from the Commons, and asked to be corrected if not. Someone did so, and I contacted the National Trust Commons warden for confirmation. Apparently, despite the name, common land is always owned by someone, often a local authority or a charity, such as the NT, though there’s still a fair amount in private ownership. So, unless you have the landowner’s permission or a dwelling with commoners’ rights associated with it, it’s a definite ‘no’.
