From the EDITOR
Welcome to Look Local in March!
Isn’t this a great time of year? As daffodils bloom and the days gradually become a little longer again, spring is certainly in the air! Mother’s Day is just around the corner and Easter is at the end of the month, so maybe some family time for many of us too? It’s been a busy time for Look Local, and as February was a short month, a quick turn around was required, so we’ve been working our socks off to bring you this month’s magazine. Luckily, there is plenty going on locally to fill our pages, and we are delighted to bring you news from many local groups and organisations. We include updates from the Charity Christmas Post team, with some fantastic results to share from this recent festive season, and also news from Bookham Flower Club and the BRA. A new children’s drama club is starting in Bookham: the everpopular Stagecoach is opening its doors and will be running classes and workshops from the Dawnay School. This is a fantastic activity and I am sure it will be enjoyed by many of our local children. Some Fun Dentistry Facts... • DRINK WATER AFTER YOU EAT – drinking water helps prevent cavities, aids in digestion and helps the body absorb nutrients!
• DID YOU KNOW... it’s not really sugar that’s attacking your teeth? Instead, BACTERIA eat the sugar found in all the food that you eat, creating acids that wear away your enamel and cause cavities.
• THINK ABOUT IT: brushing your teeth is the only time you clean your skeleton! • WHY DOES TOOTHPASTE MAKE ORANGE JUICE TASTE BAD? It’s the foaming agent
in toothpaste that blocks the sweet taste receptors on our tongues and highlights the bitter ones.
• TONGUE TWISTERS... 85% of the population can curl their tongue into a tube. • The most VALUABLE TOOTH belonged to Sir Issac Newton. In 1816, one of his teeth was sold in London for $3,633... the tooth was set in a ring!
• SHINE BRIGHT LIKE THE MAYANS! About 2500 years ago, the Mayans showed their deep understanding of dentistry and even bejewelled their own teeth, using early drills.
• The blue whale is the LARGEST mammal on earth, but it can only eat tiny shrimp because it has NO TEETH! • A MOUSE’S TEETH NEVER STOP GROWING! Part of why mice chew on everything is because their teeth NEVER stop growing. If they didn’t constantly gnaw, their teeth could end up being LONGER than their body!
• The average WOMAN smiles 62 times a day, whilst the average MAN smiles about 8 times a day. • TOOTH ENAMEL is the HARDEST substance in the human body... however, we do not recommend that you use your pearly whites as tools!
• Giraffes only have BOTTOM TEETH!

POEM CORNER. Swimming and the mature woman with the figure to match In a futile attempt to try and get slim, I’ve decided to have a regular swim. I’ve bought a new costume, I’m happy, I smile, I do beautiful breaststroke – schoolgirl style – Till a matronly backstroke lands me a swipe Because I veered to her left instead of her right, And now charging down comes this portly gent Doing crawl in goggles and definitely bent On swimming the Channel at breakneck speed – Another ducking is all I need! Look carefully round before you get in – It’s an obstacle course as well as a swim, For people will stop, and chat, and laugh Right in the middle of the swimming bath! And if you wish to stay alive, Beware the chap who likes to dive. You could be flattened, you could even sink, And all because he didn’t think! I enjoy my swim – that I admit, It’s getting out that’s the awful bit. Cold in my cubicle, I shut the door And all my clothes fall on the floor. I find it hard to sit on the seat And I get awful cramp reaching my feet, But it’s so important, everyone knows, To dry very carefully between your toes! If you want a quick change – if that’s what you’re after, Then don’t wear tights – they’re a total disaster, Perched on one leg, tied up in knots, Take my advice and stick to socks! Of minor discomforts I’m unaware, Of aching limbs, of dripping hair, I feel so virtuous, all of a glow, “I swam 50* lengths this morning, you know! Back home in a chair, comfy and deep, I sip my hot chocolate – and fall asleep!! (*poetic licence)

Bookham, Fetcham and Effingham Christmas Charity Post SUMMARY OF RESULTS FOR CHRISTMAS 2017 Introduction
The detailed 2017 results are given in full in the table below. In summary, sales of stamps and numbers of cards delivered were much as last year, with sales of stamps up 1% and cards delivered down 2%. This year, we only need to hold a very small float and will manage to send £3,500 to projects in developing countries.
Thanks to all concerned
Once again, my thanks go to all concerned with the CCP, from the committee to the stamp sellers, both door-to-door and from shops, the leafleters, sorters and deliverers. I would particularly like to thank again all twelve shops that sold stamps this year and acted as posting points. The total stamp sales at shops was £2,469, increasing from 66% to 68% of total stamp sales.
Stamp Sales 2016: £3,598
2017: £3,612
Number of Stamps Sold 2016: 11,993 2017: 12,040 Cards Delivered 2016: 11,076 2017: 10,850
22 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018
Donation to charities 2016: £3000 2017: £3500 What will the funds raised this year be used for?
The committee has agreed that £3500 will be distributed this year, split between three projects : • £1500 to the Disasters Emergency Committee for their support of member charities, providing temporary shelter, emergency healthcare, food, clean drinking water and sanitation services to the Myanmar Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. • £1000 to Médecins Sans Frontières for their work in Yemen. • £1000 to Practical Action for water projects in East Africa. This will be matched by DFID [Department for International Development], thus making the amount donated £2,000. This is a fantastic result which hopefully indicates that the downward trend of the last few years has been halted. The total contributed to such projects over 34 years is nearly £100,000, with over 450,000 cards delivered. Michael Agius - Chairman CCP

Family Granola
I thought you’d like to know what my family often eats for breakfast! Fed up with not being able to buy granola that was sugar-free, cost effective and nice, I just started making my own and haven’t looked back. This is packed with nuts, seeds and gluten-free oats, and is therefore filling and delicious to eat – a reason why supermarkets don’t sell it, you would baulk at the cost when it has been marked up for retail! I tend to let the kids put their own fruit in, just having mine with almond milk and a berry compote made from a bag of frozen red fruit. I will also be honest that teenage boys & husbands will still radiate to Crunchy Nut Cornflakes if given the slightest opportunity!
Ingredients: Method: 250g mixed nuts 250g gluten-free rolled oats 100g pumpkin seeds 200g sunflower seeds 100g linseeds (flax seeds) 1 tbsp ground cinnamon 3 tbsps coconut oil 3 tbsps maple syrup (or 1 tbsp stevia or xyzlitol granules) 150g raisins, sultanas or dried cranberries (optional)
1. Preheat the oven 180° C /Gas 4. 2. Pulse the nuts in a food processor until just roughly chopped. Add them to a large bowl with all the remaining dry ingredients and mix well. 3. Melt the coconut oil with the maple syrup in a small pan and add to the dry ingredients. Mix well again and tip into 2 large roasting tins. 4. Bake for 15 minutes, then stir well and return to the oven for a further 10 minutes. Stir and again and return to the oven for a final 5-10 minutes or until pale golden brown and with a lovely toasty smell (keep an eye on your oven, it may take less time and sometimes more if doing in bulk!). 5. Allow to cool before stirring in the dried fruit (if using) and storing in a kilner-style jar (cheapest and best from Ikea).

Gardening matters BIRDS IN SPRING
Cecilia John
: 01372 200 000
Spring is the breeding season for wild birds, because days are longer and milder and there’s often an abundance of food to feed their chicks. However, temporary food shortages can occur at almost any time: if this happens during the breeding season, putting out extra food can make a big difference to the survival of young birds. Many birds naturally seek out insects to feed their offspring. They’re a good source of protein, which is essential for growth and development, so mealworms for birds at this time of year are a great idea. Soak them in water before putting them out, and avoid putting too many out at once, as they’ll turn mouldy more quickly. Suet products, such as nuggets or pellets, are also perfect because they’re soft and easy to eat. Avoid peanuts and fat during the spring, as these can be harmful if adult birds feed them to their nestlings. If you do put out peanuts, use suitable mesh feeders to prevent young birds choking on large pieces. And never feed bread to birds, despite what you did as children: it has little nutritional value and fills them up without giving them any of the nutrients they need. And calcium: birds can’t store in their bodies the amount they need to make egg shells, so when they’re ready to lay their eggs, they need a good source. There are various products on the market containing calcium for strong eggshells, bone and feather growth and the formation of strong beaks in chicks. Good hygiene is particularly important during milder

months. Bird food deteriorates more quickly then, providing ideal conditions for harmful bacteria, so monitor your supply carefully, reducing the amount you’re offering if it takes time to disappear. A bird table or hanging feeders are preferable to ground feeding: rats are attracted to leftover food and often carry diseases, which can affect birds or people. And cats have it far too easy if food is placed on the ground. Keep bird tables and surrounding areas clean and free from droppings/ mouldy food, which are breeding grounds for parasites and bacteria. Clean and wash your bird table and hanging feeders regularly with a 5% disinfectant solution and move feeding stations to a new area every month to prevent droppings gathering underneath. If large amounts accumulate, clear them and clean the ground with disinfectant. All birds need to drink. They also need water to keep their feathers in good condition. Not many gardens provide birds with safe drinking and bathing facilities, so anything you do will help. Bird baths are the easiest option, so provide a shallow dish, containing at least 2.5cm of water. Rinse water containers daily, especially in warmer weather, and let them dry before adding fresh water. Droppings can accumulate in bird baths, so keep an eye there too. It will take a while for word to get round the bird population, but when it does, enjoy the various types and sizes that flock (haha) to your garden.

Windows update DATA BACKUP AND
01372 370300
sales@tecres.co.uk
www.tecres.co.uk
This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tec Res in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.
Windows Update system has been a focus for us over this month. We have seen a problem caused to machines which were originally Windows 7 or Windows 8 and which took the Windows 10 update as an upgrade. As a part of the Windows Update process, some important files are downloaded to a hidden partition on your PC’s hard drive. However, the new downloaded files are larger than the available space on the hidden partition on the hard drive. The solution for this is not an easy one, as it involves resizing all the partitions available on the C drive. This is not something that the average user can do: there is a possibility that the resizing will fail, rendering your machine not bootable, with major access issues to your data. Although it doesn’t address this problem, there are ways that you can control some of your Windows updates by going to your Start button, then to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for Updates. We would always encourage you to take the latest
38 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018
Windows updates, as this ensures you are kept secure. Data Backup We can’t stress enough the importance of data backup, and we provide automatic cloud data backup as a part of our Total Care Support package. If you would prefer to make your own backup arrangements, Windows 10 has a very easy-to-use feature called File History. This is a continuous backup program which copies your data to an external drive from your data libraries, desktop and contacts folder. Once it has created a master backup, it copies changed data every hour (by default) to your external drive. It is fast and effective, and our only recommendation once you have created a backup is not to leave the backup drive adjacent to your computer: both devices would be impacted in the same way in the event of a fire or flood, so keep your backup drive elsewhere. You can back up on to a memory stick or an external hard drive, the costs of which range from £8.00 and upwards from there.

The Bookhams Residents’ Association (BRA) & The Bookham Community Association (BCA) For many years, there has been confusion about these two very important and active organisations, but the difference is very clearly defined. The BCA plays a vital role in running the Old Barn Hall in Church Road, and most of the funding for this historic part of the village is derived from the BCA’s organisation and income from Village Week. The BCA also publishes and distributes the Bookhams Bulletin four times a year. Most organisations in the village are affiliated and appear regularly in the magazine. The BRA, on the other hand, has an extremely wide range of responsibilities, such as working closely with the six local councillors in order to see that improvements are carried out, which often involves liaising with Mole Valley District Council. Environmental matters, such as flooding and infrastructure, particularly roads, are carefully monitored by the BRA; in addition, a close eye is kept on planning applications via a small sub-committee, and there are individual committee members dealing with Education, Health, Transport, Trees, Christmas lights and hanging baskets, the last two with invaluable help from a closely-linked group of traders, the Bookham Retail and Business Association (BRaBA). It also takes time to co-ordinate the increasingly popular BRA monthly litter-pick, and
another task that may go unnoticed is the maintenance of the village noticeboards... not forgetting the hours spent preparing and distributing the BRA Newsletter, which is published in the spring and autumn. A huge ‘thank-you’ is due here to over 130 road stewards who deliver copies to all our members. Although the BRA and the BCA are separate in terms of administration and the roles that they carry out, there is a very close working relationship between them. One way of summing up the difference in the two associations is that the BCA has the pleasure of social events during Village Day and Village Week, as well as various functions at the Barn Hall, whereas the BRA has to deal mostly with problems that occur in the village on a regular basis. However, a lot of satisfaction can be gained when such problems are dealt with successfully. The BRA and the BCA depend on their teams of volunteer, and if you feel that you would like to help, even in a small way, please refer to the contact details below.

The Kissing Sailor
FROM OUR FEBRUARY COVER
Our February front cover, a kissing couple statue for a Valentine’s theme, generated some interest. For anyone who is interested, this statue is located in Sarasota, Florida, but I also had a call from a gentleman in Weybridge who said he had seen a version at an Italian port when he was on a cruise, so maybe there are several of them. It is based on a famous photograph which was taken in 1945 by a gentleman called Alfred Eisenstaedt. Taken in Times Square, minutes after news broke of Japan’s surrender to the US. His iconic black and white photograph then appeared on the front cover of LIFE magazine. It seems to be a ‘Marmite’ image... you either love it or hate it. The lady in the white dress came forward a while after the photo was widely publicised but the identity of the sailor has always been a little ambiguous. Several sailors claimed it was them, but the true identity has never been confirmed. Anyway, we simply liked the statue and thought it provided a striking front cover for the month of love. This month’s cover, a little less historic image but pretty all the same, I hope you agree.

FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS Saturday 24 March, to the Dorking Halls
Left: Fancy-dressers at a previous festival. Above: Rachel Bashford, previous winner of the Junior category of the Dorking Film Festival
Mole Valley’s own film festival is back again on 24 March, showcasing the best of local film-making talent, as well as films from further afield. Local co-organisers Robert McCaffrey and David Perilli have designed a programme that will appeal to a variety of film fans, as well as those who want to get into film-making. Four of the sessions at the festival (Junior, Student, Adult and Documentaries) have awards up for grabs, and the audience gets to vote for the winners at the end of each session. New this year are the film-makers’ networking session (free to attend) and new full-day tickets, which offer fantastic value. “The films in the competition categories are extremely varied and have often raised eyebrows in the audience. It’s a day of celebration of film, and it should be enjoyable and

memorable once again,” said Robert McCaffrey. The programme is as follows (subject to change): 10:00 Junior films (up to 18) 11:30 Student (18-21) 13:00 Film-makers’ networking session 14:00 Adult film-makers (over 21) 16:00 Documentary session 18:00 Ralph Vaughn Williams showcase 19:30 Fracking films & debate 21:00 Florida Project (feature film) More information and tickets are available via the event’s web site, www.DorkingFilmFestival.com

Mazda MX
CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
The first rays of spring sunshine, hopefully heralding a tanning summer, spotlight the desirability of fresh-air jaunts in an open top motor. And here I cite the bliss of being able to do it in a tiny treasure of transport, namely the petite Mazda MX5, a four wheel joy, the car that accounts for half of all its UK sales right across Europe. Despite our changeable weather, the UK is the largest market for convertibles and the heralded Mazda reigns supreme. And here’s a reminder for comparison: the rival Lotus Elise is priced £6,000 more than this eager beaver of Japanese automotive genius and invention. The two-seater is also recognised as the world’s best selling sports car, as revealed in the Guinness World Record books. And that to me is no surprise whatsoever: it is a double-deal benefit, being a fun car in which to revel and a real bargain buy. Inside it is cosy and close-fitting and its performance from its front engine is eager and responsive, with a sharp manual gear change ability that gets the most out of its six speed box. And I must confess the entry level MX5 1.5-litre job, with its short shift perfection, is every bit as delightful a treat to drive as the pricier 2.0-litre rangetopper.A show-off weekend in the Lake District, with its testingly variable winding lanes and roads, climbs and
52 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018
descents, underlined the Mazda’s eagerness to please. Its road-holding and two wheel drive fill you with confidence, and at the same time, urge you to have fun and thrills in complete safety. And with the hood down, despite a typically around-Windermere nippy atmosphere, the cocooned cosiness was complete, with no intrusive draught for either me or a warmth-seeking Trophy Wife to moan about. If needs be, and if you get caught out by shower, you can up the hood on the go in five seconds. Like everything else with this desirable third-generation cabrio, the designers have been painstaking in ensuring its tradition and reputation remain firmly intact. In its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, it emerged as the spiritual successor to the British sports cars of the Fifties and Sixties…the Triumph Spitfire, Austin Healey 100, MGA and Lotus Elan. And it has never looked back, outlasting and overtaking the lot. In America, it is dubbed the ‘Miata’…an old German word for ‘reward’. How true…. Specification: Engine 1.5-litre 131 BHP SE: MPG 47.1, Speed 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Price £18,795. Warranty three years, 60,000 miles.

MOLE VALLEY Car Parking Charges Councillor Vivienne Michael, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: “Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) hourly car parking charge has been frozen for nine years, and at 60p, is the lowest in Surrey. As a result, council tax is now subsidising the cost of our transport-related services to the tune of £1.25m every year. This is simply unsustainable and threatens our ability to maintain other front line services. “The new charges would come in in August 2018 and would remain at this level at least for the duration of our three-year forward plan. They will enable us to
increase the number of free parking spaces we can offer and also make a further £120,000 capital investment in improving our car parks. This will include refurbishment of the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall car park, installation of electric vehicle-charging bays and upgrading pay and display machines. “MVDC’s Scrutiny Committee will be debating the 2018/19 budget proposals on 23 January and the executive will be listening carefully to that debate, as well as to the views of local businesses and other interested parties before finalising our budget recommendations on 6 February. These will go forward to a full council meeting on 20 February.”

SURREY POLICE NOTICE INSPECTOR KAREN COYNE - MOLE VALLEY AREA PATROL TEAM INSPECTOR
Closure of Police Front Counter at Mole Valley District Council Offices On 31st March 2018, the Surrey Police front counter at Pippbrook Council offices in Dorking will be closing. Our front counters at Reigate and Epsom will remain unaffected. We will continue to have our Policing teams based at the council offices and we will continue to meet with people by appointment there. The decision to close a number of front counter locations in Surrey has been carefully considered. Front counters across Surrey have seen a reduction in footfall. Surrey Police has to protect front line policing, and provide the best possible service to the people of Surrey in a cost-effective way. Although I recognise the benefits of personal contact, we cannot meet with all unexpected visitors at the council offices. We will still have a yellow phone outside the council offices which makes direct contact with our Contact Centre for anyone who attends the offices. Contact can also be made with us by telephone and online at www.surrey.police.uk/contact-us/ report-online. We will also arrange a regular drop-in session in the council’s reception if there is demand. Please contact me if you have any concerns. Yours sincerely
