Welcome to our May issue of Look Local! And what a lovely time of year it is too! The grass is growing like crazy in my back garden the dandelions are sprouting and the leaves on the trees have joined us for the warmer months. Although saying that, we’ve had sun shine, rain and hail stones all in one day this week so who knows what the British summer will bring this year? In our area this month there is, as always, lots going on, preparation for Village Day next month and Bookham Open Gardens too. Keen gardeners are working hard towards this great event I’m sure! We also have news from a local Sailing Club; if you are interested in finding out more about this lovely club why not pop along to their open day this month? Information can be found inside, and we have lots of other bits and bobs too … I hope you enjoy thumbing our pages this month. On a personal note, it’s been a difficult few months for me. I’ve been supporting my lovely mum through her final weeks of life. She sadly passed away at the end of April. I was so lucky to have had such a caring and supportive lady in my life for so long, she was 90 when she died and totally amazing for her age. She helped me so much over the years, in many ways, and when I started Look Local she so willingly looked after my children as I spent many evenings and weekends working. I therefore think it only fair and totally appropriate to dedicate this issue of Look Local to her. Thank you Mum you were the best xox (also, if you’ve had trouble getting hold of me this is why, normal service will now resume thank you for your patience. ) Wishing you all a good month, see you next time…

ASK BRUCE:

CUTTING CLAWS Look Local reader Barbara Turner asks how do I cut my dog’s black nails? There is a pink area underneath each nail with nerves and a blood vessel, called the quick. This means it’s living, and if cut, will bleed and hurt. The quick is easy to see on dogs with white or clear claws, but not on dogs with dark or black claws. For this reason, it is often safer to get an experienced professional to cut a dog’s nails, but you can do this yourself. There are special nail clippers available that come with a built-in light. The light shines through the dog’s claw and exposes the quick so you can see as you cut. Some doggy nail clippers also come with a guard which prevents you cutting too short and close to the quick. You can also look at the underside of the claw for the hollow part (it looks a bit like a canoe) which should be around the middle of the nail. This hollow part is the dead section of the nail and therefore fine to cut. However, the best rule of thumb (excuse the pun!) when cutting your dog’s nails is little and often. That way, you can be sure it will be safe, and you won’t catch or cut the quick. Alternatively, at Bruce’s we do offer a nail clipping service to our customers, or you can get it done by a vet or groomer. Come and join us for a taster session, just £4.99 on May 11th, every 2nd Thursday 7.30-9.30pm -http://www.beinthekitchen.co.uk/vitality-group

INGREDIENTS:

2 small cauliflowers, cut evenly into 12 pieces (including core) 3 ripe avocadoes, skin and stone removed 2-3 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar

FILLING:

6 sheets Nori sea weed 2 tins tuna fish 1 red pepper, finely sliced 1 small red onion, finely chopped 1 – 2 tsp wasabi paste 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil freshly ground black pepper

TO SERVE: Tamari

METHOD:

1. Steam cauliflower for 5 minutes in two batches. Whizz in food processor until it look like rice. Tip into large bowl and allow to cool. 2. Add the avocado and apple cider vinegar and mix well to holding its shape. 3. Lay a sheet of Nori on a sushi mat. Spoon a generous amount of the cauli/avo mixture onto the Nori and spread flat over the lower ¾ of the sheet, leaving a 1” gap at the top. 4. Spoon a few mounds of the filling across the centre of the cauli/avo filling. Roll the Nori up from the bottom, sealing well. 5. Use the mat to press the sushi roll into shape. 6. Repeat with the remaining Nori sheets and filling. 7. Carefully cut each roll into 8 even slices. Arrange on a large plate, cut side uppermost. Pour a little Tamari into a small dish to serve.

gardening matters

Spring has sprung...

Hooray, spring has sprung...at last… so here are a few tasks for May. Hopefully, the risk of frosts will be over by the end of May, so plant up hanging baskets with tender bedding plants now. Let your plants acclimatise to the outdoors by giving them a still, grey day or two first, rather than a windy, sunny day, then put them out at the end of May.

L

eave enough space above the compost for generous watering and use waterretaining compost to make watering effective and efficient in summer heat, but be mean with the water until the young plants have put out new roots and are definitely growing and thirsty. Weeds, argh, get your hoe going on seedlings. This is the big month for them, but watch out for garden plant seedlings: hoeing up something decorative by mistake is beyond irritating. Remove bitter cress weedlets before the seed ripens and fires off into the air…nothing more demoralising than them exploding as your hand moves in for the kill – it’s too late then. Mount a hate campaign against ground elder by spraying with glyphosate, it’s the only way: it’s impossible to remove by digging, those evil white roots are indestructible without chemical warfare.

Bulb foliage can be cleared, as the bulbs will have built up their food reserves for next year, and it’s now safe to mow where crocus/snowdrop are planted in grass. Clear winter and spring bedding too and prepare the ground for summer bedding. Start hardening off tender summer bedding plants and plant outside at the end of the month once all danger of frost is gone. You can sow hardy annual seeds – cornflowers/poppies/love-in-a-mist directly into the ground. These will all self-seed, so you’ll have summer colour in the future with no effort, yaaay. Long, dry spells give plants (and us) a false sense of security, but beware: sudden, soaking rains will bring down tall, top-heavy perennials. Ensure delphinia and campanula are supported and heavy-headed peonies staked, especially the doubles, or they’ll collapse or break under the weight of rain. May is when pests emerge in their

full horribleness, so look out for the first greenfly on new plant shoots, especially roses, and nip them in the bud (gardening joke) before they proliferate, otherwise very soon you’ll have an infestation. Blackfly on runner beans are a particular horror. Shear over winter heathers to keep them dense and respectable. Clematis montana is coming to an end, and despite the presence of new young shoots, cut back wall-trained specimens to a well-spaced framework of younger wood /fresh shoots. Clematis needs moisture to grow and flower well, so give it a can of liquid feed fortnightly, killing two birds with one stone. Finally, remove from roses any suckers emerging from below the graft, as they’ll sap the strength of the plant. Well, it’s all going swimmingly, so pat yourself on the back and enjoy the lighter evenings - and hopefully, some quality sunshine.

screen to notify you there is a problem, it then tells you to call Microsoft on a specific number to have the problem fixed, they then ask for a fee to fix your machine. Needless to say you are not calling Microsoft!

On 11 April there was a very significant Windows 10 update. It contained many security updates and improvements, but be warned it is pretty big and if you have a slow broadband connection it may take a long time (10’s of hours) to download and update your computer. It is beneficial to have this update, so just be mindful of this fact. The download will happen usually in the background, it may result in your machine appearing reluctant to close down or to restart. We saw a machine the otherday which had been trying to update for 2 days, so be warned

Finally, the website www.haveibeenpwned.com will notify you if your email address has been compromised, and from where and when. It reports on events like the recent AOL and Yahoo hacking and tells you how many times your information has been re distributed. It has a database of about 2 billion email addresses. If your details appear on this list you may want to change your password or strengthen your security.

There is a new scam preventing your machine from operating properly, an error message appears on the

Heritage Open Days2017 Residents, businesses and organisations in Mole Valley eager to take part in England’s largest festival of history and culture, are being encouraged to come forward with ideas for events. This year’s Heritage Open Days will run, under the theme ‘Wheels in Motion’, from 7 - 10 September and celebrate the district’s diverse heritage.

Last year, hundreds of residents & visitors delighted in uncovering hidden history, exploring fascinating exhibitions and opening doors - all free of charge - at 70 events across Mole Valley as part of the four-day festival. A particular highlight of Heritage Open Days 2016 was the grand opening of Dorking’s Deepdene Trail on 10 Sept. The trail’s popularity & reputation has been growing ever since, with residents & visitors exploring the

restored architectural & landscape features of the historic Deepdene Estate. For more info & the latest events taking place at the Deepdene Trail, please visit www.deepdenetrail.co.uk. From 8 - 11 Sept last year, visitors arrived in their droves to explore a wide-range of events. Thorncroft Manor, The Grange, Dalewood House & Flint Cottage all proved particularly popular, but there were so many other hidden gems people enjoyed too.

Surrey cancer charity

‘Topic of Cancer’

Local cancer support group set up by Nigel Lewis-Barker MBE and the late John Blackburn is returning to Bookham, every second Monday of tevery month at The Old Barn Hall, 7.30pm

Topic of Cancer is a Surrey charity offering local support groups across the UK since 2009 for cancer patients and their families to meet socially in a relaxed environment to share experiences and discuss treatment options. Occasionally there are guest speakers including scientists, specialists, therapists, celebrities and patients and trips out to a theatre or place of interest. There is no booking requirement or charge and members are encouraged to visit other area groups as well. Bookham was the first support group set up by Nigel Lewis-Baker MBE and the late John Blackburn meeting at the Preston Cross Hotel, now no longer there. This led to the group trying out alternative venues including Thatcher’s Hotel in East Horsley but they are now returning to Bookham where they will meet on the second Monday of every month at The Old Barn Hall in Church Street from 7.30pm. The charity also supports and raises awareness and

funds for world leading immunotherapy research being carried out in Guildford at the University of Surrey. Members get the opportunity to visit the labs to meet the team and see the work being done. Nigel recently helped lead the BBC Surrey and BBC Sussex ‘My Cancer Story’ week after receiving their Community Heroes award for Outstanding Achievement. This has led to plans to open new support groups in Guildford and Woking and a specialist fitness group in Guildford in the next few months. The events and interviews from the week will be revisited in an hour long programme on both local BBC channels on Easter Day at 4pm If you are a patient or family member with a cancer experience or have an interest in learning more or helping please join the group from Monday 10th April or contact the charity for more information at support. groups@topicofcancer.org.uk

Mole Valley meeting report on Tuesday 11th April 2017

M

eriel Sexton, our President, welcomed members and visitors and wished members, with April birthdays a Happy Birthday. She then passed on news items for various events taking place soon. Meriel reported that the March Jumble Sale, raised an amazing ÂŁ1,100, with some money still to come. A superb result. Pat Hunt reported on the annual Council Meeting, held at Dorking Halls on the 27th March. Pat gave an interesting and detailed report. The guest speaker had been Jo Salter, the first UK female fighter pilot. Pat gave some amusing insights into Jo,s career.

LOCAL Â ADVERTISING Â

After refreshments our guest speaker, Jane Muddle, enlightened and enthralled us a with her tales of Madagascar. Not only did she give us a geography lesson but fascinated us with her stories of the people, & their lives. Jane had a display of beautiful bags and hats made from raffia and dyed with natural dyes made from roots. The results were fabulous and four members modelled them for us. Jane judged the craft competition, a very hard task. Pam Gilbertson won with her magnificent tailored trouser suit. Our next meeting is on May 9th at 7.45pm. may car review

Skoda Superb

Ted Macauley test drives the Skoda Superb TDI and lets us know what it has to offer....

G

ood looking, stylish and elegant. I know, modest as I am, I could be describing myself - but, no, I am doubling up on a fab hotel and a desirable car that joined forces to make Majorca memorable. They were my combined joy when, along with Trophy Wife, I revelled and relaxed on a comfy stay at the Grand Hotel Son Net snuggled in the Tramuntana Mountains, 25 minutes drive from bustling Palma. The tranquil terrace is a front row on nature. The only peace and quiet being disturbed by an amusingly braying donkey sheltering from the blazing sun in the hotel’s own vineyard – and the squawks of an encircling golden eagle seeking mid-air prey. It is a haven. Serene. And it would be intrusive to be a to-and-froer in a bold and noisy car… like the squat and trumpeting guest Ferrari that whizzed in and out in a frenzy of ear-splitting nuisance. In total contrast my borrowed Skoda Superb was just that…superb. A whispering winner, as hush-hush as can be for such a massive motor, a veritable giant saloon with enough cabin space for a squad of Coldstream Guardsmen. The Superb is Skoda’s value-for-money range topper, the third generation. And each level has seen an improvement with its design engineers fashioning an even better, bigger car with more and more panache each time as an escape from its earlier life reputation as a wretched wreck not to be seen. Not any more. No, sir. The latest Superb,a prize winner worldwide,is one whole load of car for the outlay. An

upmarket pleasure on every count…comfort, ability, economy, nimbleness and sheer enjoyment to drive. And the boot…wow….even TW’s vast, as-usual holiday wardrobe was easily swallowed up without the slightest chance of an unwelcome crease risk. I put it through a sequence of rigorous tests in Majorca where straight flat-outish roads give away to sharp bends with cyclists suddenly wobbling into view requiring heavy braking and swerving, and hills and drops, over scarily bumpy and holed lanes, and my elegantly silvercoloured treat coped without the slightest murmur, threat or protest. I suspect it would soak up with ease an arduous trek, say, between London and Penzance. My Balearic demands on it were short-distanced in comparison. If I am beginning to sound like a, eager fan, I don’t mind. Because I am. I love value for my money and this new, updated, uprated, upmarket contender on the saloon front, slimmed down by 75kg from its predecessor, is a winner with, I would guarantee, plenty more silverware to be awarded. While I remember: I had another quaint and welcome surprise - not that I needed the service on my sunny stopover – but I found umbrellas stowed in each of the front doors. I thought only Rolls Royce did that. I wonder what next from the masterminds behind the design dreams… in the car rightly dubbed Superb.. Specification: Model: TD1 150SE. BHP148. MPG 68.9. Speed 135mph. 0-60 in 8.9seconds. Price £22.555.

Noise Nuisance

Neil Clarke, 13363 Crime Reduction Advisor from the Eastern Division discusses noise nuisance during the spring and summer months.

T

he spring and summer months should be a time to be enjoyed by everyone but, sometimes, things can be spoiled by a few people behaving inconsiderately. It is easy to assume that this is all the fault of young people on school holidays but that is not always the case. Parties and barbeques in gardens are an enjoyable feature of summer (when it’s not raining!) but they can cause annoyance to neighbours if they carry on into the late evening and night on a regular basis. Some people have young children who need their sleep! As a general courtesy, do consider telling your neighbours if you are planning a party, or perhaps invite them to come along too!! In most cases, noise nuisance is not really a police matter and should be reported to Environmental Health Officers at Mole Valley District Council. We do, however, receive a number of calls every year from disgruntled neighbours and members of the public when a party gets out of hand and could result in a breach of the peace. Alcohol is nearly always a contributory factor when police have to get involved. If young people are out and about going to parties, please try to ensure that these events are supervised by adults and that there is a control on alcohol being available. It is not a good idea to give young people a few beers to take to a party as it is illegal for them to be in possession on alcohol under the age of 18. If police were to stop

50 Looklocal Magazine - May 2017

Â

them, the alcohol will be confiscated and poured away. Parks, recreation grounds and open green spaces are also intended to serve the whole community and it can be intimidating if large groups of people gather on them without warning and behave inconsiderately. If anyone feels intimidated or threatened in any way, do call the police on 999. Some communities have already asked police to consider anti-social behaviour on local recreation grounds as priority issues and we will always try to attend if possible. Littering can also be a problem on recreation grounds and on local streets in general. If reported to police we normally refer the matter to the relevant person at Mole Valley District Council. It is tempting on occasions to challenge littering when you see it happening but do consider your own safety and we would never recommend anyone putting themselves in a position where they could receive abuse. If you have any concerns with regards to littering please contact Mole Valley District Council on 01306 873540. At the risk of repeating myself, do please remember to remove any valuables from your car when you are out and about for the day. Opportunist thieves are known to target car parks at beauty spots and they know it is common practice to hide things under the seats and it the glove compartments. Please take all your valuable items with you if you are on a day out - hiding them in the boot is not an option!

Summer is on its way... How do you look forward to the arrival of lighter evenings and warmer days? With joyful anticipation or dread?

bookham libraryNEWS Our very own Eve, judging The Rotary Club’s Young Writer Competition This month Eve, one of our management team, was delighted to be invited by The Rotary Club of Bookham and Horsley to be a judge in their Young Writer Competition. The entries were of an extremely high standard and young writers from The Dawnay and Manor House did exceptionally well. The theme was ‘reflection’, so the brilliantly imaginative stories and poems covered past experiences, historical events and magical mirrors.

Come to Bookham Library to read and admire the illustrated entries from The Dawnay School, which are currently on display in our children’s library. Libraries are hubs of information, and provide all sorts of services, but at our hearts, we’re still really keen on stories. We’re delighted that Bookham is home to so many enthusiastic young readers and writers - perhaps we’ll see books they’ve authored on the shelves one day.

Whats been happening at Chrystie Rec?

Cllr. Metin Huseyin; Tony Wynn (MVDC); FrancesFancourt (BRA); Cllr. Clare Curran; PCC David Munro; Neil Clarke Surrey Police), Stella Keen (MVDC); Sergeant John Pearson (Surrey Police); Jez Crute (Bookham Colts) and Peter Seaward (BRA Chairman).

T

he neighbourhood team in Mole Valley has been reviewing the results of a £20,000 grant from David Munro, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), to tackle anti-social behaviour around the Ken Barrington Pavilion in Great Bookham. A further £10k from Mole Valley and additional funding later in the year of approx. £7,500 to lay a new cricket pitch will help to improve the cricket club. Recently, there’s been a rise in the number of reports of anti-social behaviour and recorded crimes at the pavilion in the Chrystie Recreation Ground. The neighbourhood team and other partners decided action needed to be taken; a joint action group was set up with representatives from the police, council, local residents through the BRA and other interested parties to look at what solutions could be put in place. Funding provided new state of the art CCTV equipment around the pavilion, along with a perimeter fence allowing legitimate access for club members only. Lighting has been improved and the clubhouse has had a make-over. The alarm system has been replaced and the nearby oak tree pruned to prevent people climbing on to the clubhouse roof. Councillor Huseyin, local youth leaders and the Sports Association are looking at ways to engage with local

youths by running a youth café from the clubhouse to give them a sense of ownership. Other groups in the village are considering ways to use the clubhouse for their meetings, so that it will be used more often. Councillor Hussein’s view was that “Idle hands and idle premises” leads to ASB and a concentrated effort is needed to establish a strong cricket presence, through adult members, as well as a ‘Colts section’. Comments from those involved in the Joint Action Group have been very optimistic: Mole Valley Sergeant John Pearson - “The measures we now have in place will make a big difference to all those who use the pavilion and I’d like to thank the PCC for providing the funds to enable us to carry out the work. We’re committed to improving the lives of residents in Great Bookham and I’m confident that our action will reduce the incidents of anti-social behaviour around the pavilion.” Councillor Huseyin - “This project is a brilliant example of how agencies can work together as a Joint Action Group to tackle and solve an issue that was clearly blighting the local community in Great Bookham.” PCC, David Munro - “I am delighted that my office was able to help through our Community Safety Fund to put measures in place to halt the criminality taking place and restore this location to being somewhere local residents and youngsters can enjoy.”

TRANSITIONBOOKHAM Working to make our village more planet-friendly The Friends of Bookham Commons are holding their Spring Buffet on Wednesday 17th May, and as we enjoyed an excellent talk by Ian Swinney in March we're keen to go along and support the event. There will therefore be no open meeting this month.

If you're looking for an incentive to leave the car behind, the charity Living Streets has designated May as National Walking Month. The campaign aims to get people walking for at least 20 minutes each day during the month.

At time of writing we had pencilled in a plant swap afternoon on Sunday 14th May. Please check our website, social media and/or local noticeboards nearer the time for up-to-date information.

Those who aren't usually early risers might want to make an exception on the 7th of this month. The first Sunday in May is International Dawn Chorus Day, organised by the Wildlife Trusts.
