From the EDITOR

Welcome to our May magazine! I hope you all enjoyed a lovely Easter break, although that seems like a while ago now, but at least we have two more Bank Holidays to look forward to this month. Let’s hope they are warm and sunny. As always, a busy, busy issue for you this month… It’s been great attending some local events in the past few weeks; Michelle went along to a launch event of a new WI group in Bookham and she tells us all about that, and we also attended the Bookham Commons AGM together which was a very enjoyable and informative evening. I hope you enjoy reading about that on page 36. Lots of other local news too, with information about the everpopular upcoming Open Gardens. It’s not been a great spring thus far, so I really take my hat off to the enthusiastic gardeners locally who are willing to allow us into their gardens this year. As well as this, we have some exciting news from SPACE and also from The Meeting Place. We are delighted to share an update about the Bookham Youth Project and also a lovely feature about a selection of Crafty experiences/businesses which are all very local. It’s been said before, I know, but Bookham is full of surprises: who’d have thought all this was going on, right on our doorstep? Also included, a little competition to win tickets to the Hampton Court Flower Show. Why not give it go? This is always a lovely day out and you know what they say… you’ve gotta be in it to win it ! Finally, I’ve been asked to pass on huge thanks to everyone who donated money via Just Giving last month to the fund for Benji’s cochlear implants. The £80,000 of funds needed were raised (not only from your kind donations!), and Benji’s operation will have taken place by the time you read this message. Benji’s family is overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness they have received, which will surely change this little boy’s life forever. Thank you. Wishing you all a fabulous month. Until next time,

Ros

WHAT A CRAFTY

LOT WE ARE...

It’s been said that there is nothing Bookham cannot turn its hand to, from cake-making to drain clearing, from painting to planning, but for now, our thoughts turn to all things crafty. We have compiled a taste of what you can find in Bookham. Businesses and voluntary groups alike, there doesn’t seem to be much that Bookham isn’t doing.

Original Signpost Gifts: When Bridget Kelly’s father went travelling, first on his own on his motorbike, then with Bridget’s mum in their MG and then with the family in his Morris Oxford, he always had a map to hand. So, when Bridget was poking around in her loft and came across a box of maps belonging to her dad, some of them dating back to the ’20s & ‘30s, she knew she wanted to make something from them and so Signpost Original Gifts was born! For more information about Bridget’s inspirational gifts, please see her website: signpostoriginalgifts.com

Barn Hall Crafters: Barn Hall Crafters meet on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month 9.15 - 12.15. They have workshops or talks at every meeting. Whilst they try to keep this to craft themes where they can, they do have unusual talks as well, such as the one coming up on Beekeeping - not much to do with craft, although the bees may beg to differ! The workshops cover anything from pottery/all sorts of needlework/butter icing flowers/painting/calligraphy/glass blowing and many more. It is a vibrant & busy club & there’s a waiting list for people to join. They are happy for visitors to pop in as a spectator, but please call Jan Edgcumbe (chairman) 01372 436539 first.

THERE’S A REAL

BUZZ ABOUT BOOKHAM

Early in April, I was delighted to be invited along to a meeting in the Harrison Room at the Old Barn Hall to witness the setting up of a brand new WI. There was a real buzz in the room as people arrived and caught up with friends, old & new. The meeting was opened by Jill Elliott from Eastwick WI to take the new group through the order of business required to set the group up formally. She was ably assisted by Jan Heasman & Ann Lilleywhite and supported by presidents Amanda Edge of Great Bookham Belles WI and Clare Cody of Bookham Butterflies WI. The first and perhaps most important piece of business was to decide on a name. Several ideas had been put forward, many of them with a connection to Bookham Commons, nightingales, barn owls etc, and in true WI democratic style, a vote was taken. The overwhelming winner was Bookham Bees WI. Co-presidents Diana Greenman & Michelle Howes signed the WI constitution and Bookham Bees was accepted into the National Federation. Then the committee introduced themselves: the two presidents, the communications secretary, Clare Prior, the minutes secretary, Tina Cox, and treasurers Jo Towns & Heather Phenix. Other committee members are Michelle Taylor,

18 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

Jenny Bissell, Lynda Wall & Gaye Burt. During the meeting, suggestions for sub-groups, speakers, outings and activities were requested. Gardening, singing, walking, film theatre music, pub meals and Mother and Toddlers were put forward, to name but a few. Something for everyone, all ages, all interests. I’m sure over the next few meetings that they will have a WI feast of ideas. All sweetened with their own WI honey! Over tea and cake, the rest of the evening was devoted to getting to know each other; the hubbub of conversation could probably be heard across the whole village! The first proper meeting will be next month (May) when a beetle drive is planned. Another great way to get to know people and have some fun at the same time. Thank you very much, Bookham Bees, for inviting me along. It really was a lovely evening and most enjoyable. I look forward to seeing this group grow and flourish. A fabulous addition to the WI groups in our area. Bookham Bees WI will meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7.30 for 7.45 in the Harrison Room at the Old Barn Hall. Anyone interested in joining this new group should contact Diana Greenman - dianagreenman@gmail.com

Last month, a story hit the national headlines, regarding the right to defend oneself and one’s home, should an armed burglar break in. On this particular occasion, the home belonged to two pensioners who were asleep in their bed. What followed led to a pretty horrific outcome and must have been terrifying for the elderly couple. It resulted in the arrest of the home owner/ elderly male pensioner who was held by the police on suspicion of murder. Obviously, this is a very controversial area of law and there are very differing views on how the homeowner should be regarded

in law, given this situation. I believe on this occasion, the homeowner has been told by police that he will not be charged with any offence. Now, I do not profess to have the answers but these headlines brought to mind a very good novel I read a little while ago about just such a situation: ‘Reasonable Force’, written by local author, C T Sullivan. It’s a very good read and, given the recent incident, I thought some of you might find it interesting to see how the plot unfolds. It’s certainly a thought-provoking read! ‘Reasonable Force’ is available from Amazon for £10.99 - boasting a five star rating on the site *****

Friends of Bookham

COMMONS ANNUAL AGM EVENING

Recently, we spent a very enjoyable evening with the Friends of Bookham Commons. The first part of the evening included their annual AGM. An introduction from the chairman, Robert Hall, was followed by an overview of the finances and the re-election of the committee, by Iain White. The ‘business’ part of the evening was informative and well-delivered. Following this, a hot buffet supper was served and it was good to mingle and chat to some other guests. I had imagined that everyone in attendance would be very local, but the couple who sat opposite us had travelled from Norwich to attend; having grown up locally and spent many happy hours on the common as teens, these keen nature lovers were looking forward to the rest of the evening. It was soon time for the guest speaker to take to the stage; Matthew Oates is a well-known broadcaster and ecologist with a particular passion for butterflies. His talk was entitled ‘Discovering the Purple Emperor, the natural history of England’s national butterfly’ Apparently, Bookham Commons are a great place to spot these lovely butterflies and Matthew has spent many days butterfly watching and recording his findings there. Matthew spoke well; his talk was very interesting and was delivered in a lighthearted but very informative and humorous way. He was incredibly knowledgable and I for one learnt a lot about the Commons and their fluttering inhabitants. After Matthew’s talk, Ranger Ian Swinney took to the stage. Ian works very hard on the Commons, alongside

36 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

a great team of local volunteers. One recent project is coming to a close this year: it’s called ‘ Life on the Edge’ which has involved much clearing of over-grown scrub. By doing this, grassy areas should start to thrive again, and in turn, this will provide insects & grubs for nesting birds and will hopefully encourage the return to the Bookham Commons of the much-loved nightingales and cuckoos. The clearing enables trees to spread their branches, rather than grow straight up in search of light. This also creates far better canopies, above which the Purple Emperor Butterflies certainly seek. The future of the Commons depends on good management now. Ian and his team are not just thinking about how the land and the trees look now, it’s about how it will be in 5, 10, 15 years time, and in respect of the oak trees, in 100s of years. I know that everywhere one goes these days, Photo Credit: Colin Kemp charities are asking us to put our hands in our pockets, but for just £10 a year, you can become a Friend of Bookham Commons. This membership money is so needed and is very well spent, preserving this lovely piece of local land. If you value our local Commons, please do contact Paul Gallard at: info@bookhamcommons.org.uk for more information. What an original and great birthday gift this would make for anyone who enjoys visiting the Commons. Remember: membership is only £10 a year. A price worth paying to preserve this lovely local common land. Look Local would like to thank the Friends of Bookham Commons not only for the work they do, but also for a very enjoyable evening.

...coming soon GDPR - GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION

01372 370300

sales@tecres.co.uk

www.tecres.co.uk

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. On 25th May 2018, every business in the UK (and Europe) will have to comply with the new GDPR legislation. That is every business, there is no hiding place. Not knowing is not an excuse. If you as a business hold personal information about another person, you must comply with GDRP, failure to do so could result in a fine of up to 3% of global turnover or up to 20 million Euros. GDPR legislation replaced our aged Data Protection Act of 1998 and 1995, so this really brings us up to date and offers protection for the future. It is easy to think GDPR doesn’t affect you because you are a window cleaner or a taxi driver, but this may not be the case. In short, if you keep any data which could identify a person, you will need to comply to GDPR. This could be a payroll record or an enquiring potential customer. If you use a mailing list of prospects or customers, in order to comply with GDPR, you have to seek positive confirmation from the person whose information you hold, stating that they have granted you permission to have their email address for the intended use, such as the sending of product updates. You are expected to protect the data people have provided you with. If your computer uses an out-ofdate operating system which no longer has any security updates available, such as Windows XP which retired in 2014, you are in breach of GDPR, since you will have failed to take reasonable care of the data. Or if you do not have any regularly updated internet security, you

38 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

are in breach, since you will not have taken sufficient care of users’ data. If you are aware that your company has fallen victim to a data breach, you must inform the owners of the data within 72 hours of the breach. As a consumer, you have the right to ask any Europeanbased company holding your data to reveal what information they hold about you, and they must respond to this request within a month. Also, you can request to have your data amended or deleted, and they must comply within a month. This is far from a complete breakdown of what GDPR means, but if you have any presence in the digital world, this is something you need to know more about. To help, we have detailed below the dates of when some popular operation systems are due to stop support:

BOOKHAM

OPEN GARDENS SUNDAY 17TH JUNE 2018

Do come and join in this annual event, where over 700 people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way. In this our 13th year, we are featuring at least 10 varied and attractive private gardens, 9 of which you won’t have seen last year. In addition, Gracewell Care Home will open their gardens for the first time and we welcome back Manor House School, The Grange Centre with its Victorian walled garden and Little Bookham Allotments. The gardens come in all shapes and sizes, from the formal to more laid-back planting, maybe with some quirky features, and of course, fruit and vegetables in abundance at the Grange and the Allotments. This year’s Village Day theme – ‘Birds, Bees, Bugs and Butterflies’ – is applicable to us too, for all our gardens are a haven for them. Some of our gardeners go further and choose their planting specifically to be ‘perfect for pollinators’ and also to provide seed heads and berries for the birds. In addition, you will see ponds and habitats designed to attract wildlife and provide them with shelter. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid-May from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

LAWNMOWER GARDENING MATTERS Cecelia John: 01372 200 000

|

Hurrah, it’s May and mowing the lawn is back on the agenda. Everyone has a different view of what type of lawn they would like, and so choosing the right kind of lawnmower for your garden can be a difficult decision. Here goes with my attempt to help you find the right mower to keep your grass looking gorgeous all year. There are several types of lawnmower for you to consider: Cylinder lawnmowers use a series of blades at the front of the mower which rotate against a fixed bottom blade. This makes them perfect for level lawns and really fine, short cuts, such as those envy-inducing lawns in ornamental gardens. They’re available as electric, petrol-powered and hand-pushed models and come with a variety of cutting widths. However, if you use a cylinder mower, your lawn will need more regular mowing to keep it looking great. Rotary lawnmowers are the most versatile type of mower because they’re able to cope with different types of lawn, such as rougher areas of grass and sloping banks. Their blades rotate horizontally at your chosen cutting height and they’re available as either electric or petrol-powered models. They’re the best choice for keeping a normal family garden perfectly trimmed and they’re able to deal with longer grass if you don’t cut the lawn on a regular basis. However, if it is a petrol-powered one, you do need to be able to start it….fine if it starts by means of a key, less so maybe if it has a pull start: I have never got the hang of that, probably because I’m on the short side.

ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

Make sure you can indeed start it before you buy one. It’s no fun standing outside for hours on end, pulling the cord upwards but with zippety doodah happening. Hover lawnmowers. As the name suggests, this type of mower hovers just above the grass. These are rotary mowers which float on a cushion of air; they can be extremely lightweight to push and their easy manoeuvrability makes them ideal if your garden has curved edges, borders or flower beds. However, they may not be terribly robust if your garden has a lot of rough or bumpy areas. Cordless lawnmowers can be petrol-powered or batterypowered mowers and they are growing in popularity, due to the performance improvements and lower costs of lithium ion batteries. Petrol mowers offer the power and range benefits of an engine, and, with the additional power available, they can also be self-propelled which makes it much easier to push them on large lawns. Electric mowers are extremely efficient, especially the larger models, but there’s always the hazard of the power cord, and so a circuit breaker is an advisable extra purchase, so that when (note ‘when’ and not ‘if ’) you mow over the cord, you are not fried to a crisp in your own garden. Final thought: a rotary or hover mower will do the job in most gardens. Adjust the frequency and height of cut with the seasons, but resist the temptation to cut too close. Have fun!

SOUTH BOOKHAM SPACE

GREAT NEWS!

PLANNING APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION APPROVED

Construction of a first floor extension to provide a new social meeting SPACE for classes, meetings and social events at South Bookham SPACE has received the green light from MVDC planning. Thanks to prudent management, MVDC and Thomas Flack Foundation Grants, SPACE’s own funds plus those of Bookham Tennis Club provide over half the total funding required for the project. The new Social SPACE, large enough for 20 to 25 people, will have its own kitchen facilities, a balcony overlooking the Outer SPACE multi-use games area and neighbouring Bookham Tennis Club courts, plus a covered area for parents to watch their youngsters at play. This will encourage greater and better use of the venue, will free up the existing small committee room for much-needed extra storage and will give disabled access to this new Social SPACE. NOW – we will need to work very hard to raise the essential funds to pay the balance by huge local support in general, but particularly for: SPACE Quiz Night - Saturday 12th May at SPACE Quiz, raffle, fish ‘n’ chip supper and loads of fun for £15 pp. To reserve a table (max. 8) or individual place, please contact: Lorna Lock 01372 453953/07941 786999 or lornalock61@gmail.com Bookhams Carnival Ball on behalf of SPACE - Saturday 30th June at The Old Barn Hall. Buffet dinner, live band disco and carnival fun. Further details to follow next month. RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will be celebrating iconic figures of the horticultural world, welcoming influential Dutch designer/nurseryman Piet Oudolf. The show will explore the evolution of plants on earth. ‘Evolve: Through the Roots of Time’ will guide visitors through barren landscapes prior to the Cambrian era over 500 million years ago, to the lush tropical jungles of the Jurassic period and into the present day, where visitors will walk through a meadow of flowering plants which first appeared during the Cretaceous time. Floral

Marquee highlights will see 85 specialist nurseries, including eight National Plant Collection holders from Plant Heritage. Gemma Lake, RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Manager says: “We are delighted to reveal our exciting new line-up to the Show. AUDI A8

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

A blessing of my job is the frequency of invitations for enjoyable luxury lifestyle outings and exclusive insights into experiences otherwise out of reach, reserved only as hopes and dreams beyond reality, or as the right of the privileged ranks of the rich and famous. And here I cite with the fondest of memories my good fortune to have flown in Concorde from Paris to New York; a sailing to the USA aboard the Queen Mary 2, with a night spent at the captain’s table and a glittering host of celebs; a Virgin flight first-class to Australia with a Hong Kong five-star stopover; countless private jet trips with the late pools millionaire Robert Sangster and one-to-one lunches with mega film stars Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and world F1 champ Nigel Mansell; holidays with football legends George Best and Bobby Charlton, and an extended tour with The Beatles. There are too many more to mention. I shall stop it there to take up the very latest treat, an outing in what has been rightly voted the world’s luxury car, the wow of an Audi A8, a limo of poshness personified. And deservedly so, if my comfort-zone transport to the ultra-sophisticated Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, majestic centrepiece of quaint Bellagio on the shoreline of stunning Lake Como, one of Italy’s real treasures, is anything to go by. This is the ninth time in 14 years that Audi has been honoured with a World Car prize, and honestly, having

50 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

savoured its style, revelled in its sumptuous legroom, sprawled in its leatherwork and appreciated its driver aids with gadgets galore, I am in 100 per cent support of its latest voted status on the globe’s luxury class list over some very worthy rivals at the New York Auto Show in March. Audi justifiably hail the A8 as their flagship saloon, as soothing an example as is possible of what a luxury model should be, and with so many driver assistance aids - 40 plus - and inbuilt safety devices and easy-to-read driver-help dials info so painstakingly assembled. And I viewed it all from the cossetted comfort of the vast back seat spread of exclusive club lounge comfort and quality, as my chauffeur made the most of the 4.0-litre engine that offered easy work on the 50-odd mile journey from Milan’s Linate Airport to the Serbelloni Hotel at the other end of a free-flowing motorway and then a twisty finale along the lakeside’s narrow lanes. It is a glider of a clever car with aplomb, grace, style and value for money, and it gave me and Trophy Wife an arrival presence at the Serbelloni that was noticed and commented upon favourably by an American couple as they strolled off to their Rolls Royce.... Specification: Audi V8. 3.0TFSI 335bhp Quattro. Fuel : Petrol. Speed 155mph. 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. MPG 37.7. Warranty: three years/60,000 miles. Price £71,000

DO WE NEED A MINISTER

FOR LONELINESS...? IN BOOKHAM?

Earlier this year, it was announced that Tracey Crouch had been appointed the first Minister for Loneliness, as recommended by the late MP, Jo Cox, who had set up the Commission for Loneliness. A 2017 report said loneliness could be as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It is often thought of in the context of older people (half of those aged over 75 live alone), and it can be more of a problem in winter when poor weather and shorter daylight hours make it harder to get out and about. However, it is also increasingly a problem in younger age groups, where reliance on mobile phone communication and messaging reduces the amount of face-to-face contact in social relationships. Mums at home with young children can find themselves very isolated too, when they have been used to working life outside the home. So, we know a problem exists. But in Bookham? We are blessed to live somewhere with innumerable clubs, groups and churches to join - but which of us has not experienced that challenging feeling of being most alone in a crowd of people? Loneliness does exist in our community. The exciting news is that we can do something about it.

54 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

The Meeting Place was established to provide “a place for all, time for all” at both our Coffee Shop and Language Hub. The social isolation experienced by not speaking enough English to “join in” can be overcome by the friendly language classes available to anyone whose first language is not English. On Monday evenings, these are “Guided Conversation” classes, and on Tuesday mornings, more traditional group work. Our Coffee Shop is open to all on Monday, Friday and Saturday mornings. It is held at Bookham Baptist Church, but staffed by volunteers from all churches and none. Visitors can come with friends or on their own, and they will always find a friendly face and a listening ear, someone with time to chat to them. If you’d like to be part of this rewarding work, do consider joining us, it is such a worthwhile enterprise. We welcome more volunteers to join the team - helping out just one morning a month would make a big difference to us, and could make you feel less lonely too. DOG

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

SURREY POLICE NOTICE NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

USING LIGHT TO HELP PROTECT YOUR HOME

Recently, I visited two families who had been victims of opportunistic burglary and my first impressions were that they generally take very sensible measures to make their homes as safe and secure as possible. One area that I often discuss is the measures people take to make their homes appear occupied, even when they are not actually there. I am always pleased to hear that many people make use of simple timer switches to bring on lights in the house when they are not at home during the evenings and particularly when they are away on holiday. This is a very inexpensive way of going some way towards deterring thieves who go along a road during the evenings, looking for the houses in darkness. These will always be their first target. Sadly, however, with the two families I visited recently, both normally used timers but on the occasion when the burglary occurred, they were delayed getting home and they had not set them to come on. There may, of course, have been other factors which led to their homes being targeted but I would like to encourage everyone to consider using three or more timers, set in a staggered pattern to mirror normal movement through a home and to convey an

58 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

impression that your home is occupied. Obviously, it is not 100% guaranteed but I believe it is an inexpensive method that is worth considering. Also, lighting outside a house can convey an impression of occupancy and a greater feeling of security. Lights can remove areas of shadow outside a house, leaving fewer places where a burglar can hide without being seen. I have mentioned dusk-till-dawn lighting in the past but it is worth reiterating that this is a very simple and relatively inexpensive way of creating gentle light outside a home. Dusk-till-dawn lights are mainspowered and simply incorporate a light sensor which brings on the lights when the natural light level drops and they stay on until daylight  returns. As they are not powering on and off, they do tend to be cheaper to run than motion-activated lights. The actual lamps come in numerous different styles and generally use lower wattage bulbs, removing areas of shadow without flooding the surrounding area with glaring light. Of course, this is only one factor which can impact on the overall security of a home but I believe it is something that is worth considering.

Letter from the Library Did you know?

Do you find it difficult to make time to read? Maybe you find books difficult or boring? Look no further than your local library for a great choice of short books by popular authors which are quick and easy to read. ‘Quick Reads’ which are commissioned by The Reading Agency, are the same as mainstream books but are simpler and shorter to read - great for anyone too busy for, or intimidated by, a regular length novel. Come and see our selection in Bookham Library.

e-news

Have you ever found yourself in a book shop or supermarket, spotted a book you would like to read and wondered if you could save money by borrowing it from the library? Our library app allows library members to check just that! Scan the publisher’s barcode on the back of the book with your phone and the app will tell you if the book is in the library catalogue and which libraries

stock it. It will even offer to reserve it for you*. Download the Solus Surrey Libraries app from the app store or ask for more information in the library. *There is a small charge for reservations.

We recommend

John Ironmonger writes cleverly and with a light touch about interesting subjects. If you haven’t already tried this author, we would recommend ‘Not Forgetting the Whale’, a very enjoyable apocalyptic tale surrounding the inhabitants of a small Cornish village, or ‘The Coincidence Authority’ - an expert on probability tries to save a woman from her fate in a tangled story about life’s odds. Bookham Library is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, and Saturdays 9.30am through to 5pm.
