WELCOME TO OUR NOVEMBER ISSUE Remember, Remember, the 5th of November! Firework season is upon us! Much to the horror of many of our beloved pets. Is it just me, or have fireworks become much louder these days? Some sound like actual explosions rather than the rockets I remember from my childhood! Or maybe, I’m just getting old! Please be mindful to keep your pets inside during the evenings for a few weeks, and why not turn the TV up for good measure! It is a special Armistice Remembrance Sunday this year; the Centenary year. There will be a ‘joint churches’ service held on Sunday 11th at 10.45am at the newly refurbished war memorial in St Nicolas Churchyard in Bookham. This is always a very touching ceremony which is well attended by local residents, I’m sure this year will be no exception. We are delighted to share a selection of lovely photos of a recent quilting exhibition which took place a few weeks ago; stunning work which was very inspirational. The Grange Centre, welcomed their royal patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester recently for a tour of the site and the official opening of their new Heritage Room. The room documents the history of The School of Stitchery and Lace founded in 1938 before it became The Grange in the 1970s. The room is now open to the public and showcases a fascinating collection of truly intricate needlecraft. I was interested to learn that Royal connections go back a very long way! This is a very interesting window into our local history, and I highly recommend a visit. As well as all this, Michelle enjoyed an evening with a local Mother’s Union group; see page 20 for her account of the evening. Wishing you all a great month ahead,
Ros

A NATIONS TRIBUTE A HUNDRED YEARS OF REMEMBRANCE (11TH NOVEMBER 2018)
On 11th November 2018, the United Kingdom and its friends overseas will mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. 6.00am Battle’s Over - Sleep in peace, now the battle’s over. The sound of 1,000 bagpipes will fill the air before dawn has broken. In cities and towns throughout the land individual pipers will play Battle’s O’er - a traditional air played by pipers after a battle. 6.55pm Battle’s Over - The Last Post will be played at many of the 1,000 WWI Beacon sites throughout the United Kingdom, involving young people and others paying their personal tribute to those that gave their lives during World War I. 7.00pm Battle’s Over - WWI Beacons of Light. More than 1,000 Beacons of Light will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, with the first of these Beacons being lit at Westminster Abbey, London, that evening.
12 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
7.05pm Battle’s Over - Ringing out for peace! As beacons blaze around the country, bells in 1,000 churches and cathedrals will ring out in celebration of the end of the First World War. 7.05pm Battle’s Over - Cry for Peace Around the World. To coincide with the ringing of the church bells, 100 Town Criers, one for each year since the end of WW1, will be undertaking, ‘A Cry for Peace around the World’, and in the United Kingdom, the ‘Cry’ will be led by a Chelsea Pensioner from The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London, at 7.05pm that night. March no more my soldier laddie, There is peace where there once was war. Sleep in peace my soldier laddie, Sleep in peace, now the battle’s over. There will be a short remembrance ceremony at 10.45 at the War memorial in St Nicolas’ Churchyard

HAVE YOU STOPPED SEEING RESULTS FROM YOUR WORKOUT, OR EVEN WORSE GAINING WEIGHT AND GETTING INJURIES?
nosebab@nimda 570
Avoid weight gain this winter! We are biologically programmed to eat more in winter, shorter days signalled our ancestors to start stocking up because food would be scarce. Our survival mode still kicks in these days, only there is no shortage of calories and we can just pop to Sainsbury’s!
dicarlo.co.uk 01372 457111
Try this to avoid the winter layers…
35 High St, Great Bookham, Surrey KT23 4AD
1. A diet low in carbs but high in protein and fats will reduce cravings & snacking. Remember the more processed food you eat, the more you will crave. Eat REAL FOOD! 2. Get out daily, a walk in nature will fight off winter blues and stop comfort eating. 3. Use hearty soups to fill you up for longer – veggie ones as starters and meaty ones for a lunch or light supper. 4. Get your workouts done early so you have less time to make excuses! Or, join BABEs and we will keep you accountable! 5. Think of low sugar comfort foods that will take the edge off, my fav’s are 85% dark choc and Greek yoghurt with berries and mixed seeds.

MOTHER’S UNION HARVEST SUPPER
Look Local was recently invited to join the Mother’s Union in Bookham for their Harvest Supper. When Dawn Owers first invited me, I said, “but I’m not a Mother!” “You don’t have to be a Mother” she said. “You don’t even have to be married. We welcome everyone.” I have to admit I knew next to nothing about the MU but was keen to learn. Needless to say, as is always the case in our community, myself and other guests were made to feel very welcome and included. Once everyone had arrived we all sat down to a lovely meal, prepared by some of the members, of homemade quiche, salads, coleslaws etc. There was the added bonus of delicious homemade puddings to finish (all calorie free of course!). After the supper, there was a guest speaker, Diocesan President, Antonia Wilson (not to be confused with Antonia Fraser, the novelist, although she told me she had received the occasional email for her!). Antonia told us a bit about the Mother’s Union and it’s role in local communities as well as our global community. She then
20 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
gave us a couple of quite interesting communication exercises to do in small groups and in pairs. Inevitably I ended up discussing plants and gardens with the lady sitting next to me! Various subjects were then discussed amongst the group as a whole and many subjects, personal stories and thoughts were exchanged, with some lively debate thrown in for good measure. I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and would like to thank Dawn, Vivian, Beryl and all the members for making it such an interesting evening. If you are interested in joining the Mother’s Union or perhaps going along as a guest to find out more about the meetings, contact Beryl Morgan-Warren Branch Leader. Be in the Kitchen NOVEMBER RECIPE
QUICKFRIED CHICKEN LIVERS
WITH GARLIC & APPLE CIDER VINEGAR It’s so easy to forget about delicious chicken livers. They are so fast to cook, so flavoursome and so nutritionally amazing! Here’s a very speedy recipe to get them back into your kitchens. I quickly wilt some spinach in the hot pan, while the livers are resting for a moment after cooking, to enjoy with them.
INGREDIENTS SERVES 2
225g organic chicken livers Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 large clove garlic, crushed 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar 3 tbsp water 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
METHOD 1. Rinse the livers in a sieve under a cold tap, then pat dry on kitchen paper. Check the livers and remove any membranes etc. Cut larger pieces in half. Season well with salt and pepper. 2. Heat the coconut oil in a large frying pan. When hot, toss in the livers and leave for about a minute or until browned on the underside (this will depend on size of pieces). Do not move the liver until it has browned! 3. Turn the liver over and cook for another minute or until the pieces feel ‘just’ firm – but still pink in the middle. Add the garlic, stir for a few seconds then transfer the liver to warm plates. 4. Pour in the apple cider vinegar, water and extra virgin olive oil, let it bubble away for a moment to reduce and stir to remove any sediment from the bottom of the pan. Pour the juices over the liver and enjoy!

GARDENING MATTERS HEDGEHOGS
Hedgehogs are natural predators of many garden pests, which makes them hugely helpful in your garden, but nowadays, their numbers are threatened by widespread use of pesticides and encroaching urban sprawl, so these lovely little chaps need all the help they can get to survive. Many new homes and gardens are built to keep animals out rather than encourage them in, but you can make your garden more hedgehog-friendly, most obviously by putting hedges, not fences, between gardens. Denselygrowing varieties will work just as well as a fence, whilst also allowing a hedgehog to pass through. If fences already exist, maybe cut a small hole at ground level to allow them through. Elsewhere, growing tall wildflowers/grasses or leaving part of your garden untamed will create areas where hedgehogs can feel safe. Building a woodpile is the easiest way to make a hedgehog home and a place to hibernate. If you’re a real keeno, cut air holes into the sides of a large, sturdy cardboard box and fill it with dry grass/ straw. For something more permanent, use a wooden box, but treat it with water-based preservative, as varnish fumes could linger. Whichever material you use, put it somewhere out of the way so it won’t be disturbed, and create a tunnelled entrance with bricks/off-cuts of wood, then cover it in twigs and leaves to disguise it. Just make sure you don’t interfere with it once a hog is in residence. Hedgehogs have keen appetites. Even in a garden full

of slugs/snails/insects, they’ll appreciate extra food, but forget right now what you’ve been told about putting out bread and milk: hedgehogs are actually lactoseintolerant and this will upset their tums. There are plenty of alternatives: tinned pet food (chicken or turkey), crushed cat biscuits, chopped nuts, cooked potatoes, sultanas, even boiled eggs. This is especially necessary in autumn when they need to up their fat reserves ready for hibernation. Even a well-kept garden can hold dangers for them. Don’t use chemical-based varieties of slug pellets, as the hedgehogs may eat slugs which have ingested the poison. Look instead for wildlife-friendly versions. Fix some fine netting over your pond to prevent hedgehogs falling in, or make sure the edges are sloped, so that if one does fall in, it can climb out easily. They choose sometimes to hibernate in compost heaps, so poke gently around before digging deep into the compost. Check patches of long or overgrown grass before mowing: they’re perfect spots for foraging for insects or sleeping in. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so if one is out and about in daytime, it’s probably in trouble and should be taken to a Wildlife Rescue Centre for a check-over. If you find one asleep in your garden or wandering around at night, make sure that children in particular realise they’re wild animals and any prolonged attention might distress them. But most of all, rejoice, because I haven’t seen one in my garden for years. |

A RIGHT ROYAL VISIT The Grange Centre for People with disabilities welcomed their royal patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, for a tour of the site and the official opening of their new Heritage Room.
The Duke of Gloucester visited The Grange in September to catch up on all the latest news and officially open the new Heritage Room. The Duke was met by the Communications group who welcomed him with Makaton signing. Makaton is a sign and symbol language used by people with learning disabilities.
32 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
Then it was off to the main kitchen to join in with scone making. The catering team heard that the Duke liked chocolate and came up with a chocolate orange scone recipe. Next stop on the tour was Studio 3 which offers people with disabilities, training in photography and film animation. Students gave the Duke a
demonstration of how the green screen works. He was also introduced to the Grange’s latest mini-business – designing and making mugs using a special thermal press. The team made him a mug with his name and personal crest on it. Finally, the Duke officially opened the new Heritage Room, which documents the history of The School of Stitchery and Lace founded in 1938, before becoming The Grange in the 1970s. He met heritage experts and representatives from the Heritage Lottery Fund who funded the project. Among the guests was Bookham resident Peggy Brooks, who came to The School of Stitchery and Lace in 1955 as a trainee.
Peggy (right of pic) made clothes for The Duke’s children. Audrey Warboys (blue dress) was a secretary at The Grange from 1949-1952 and has donated embroidered items made for her, by the then students, to the collection. People we support and guests joined the Duke for lunch in the ballroom where he chatted to everyone and unveiled a plaque. In a short speech, he made a touching reference to his mother, our former patron Princess Alice, saying she would have been ‘delighted to see The Grange flourishing and doing such good work’. Each department at The Grange contributed towards a hamper of Grange goodies including the scones he helped make when he first arrived.

WIFI EVERYWHERE EASILY AND CHEAPLY
This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989.
We know how frustrating it can be when your wifi signal is no longer making it to the areas you need it, or maybe the poor signal is causing the internet to run more slowly - maybe it’s the kids bedroom, the conservatory or even the lodge in the garden? Well we may have found an ideal solution for you, using a well-established technology which is found in mobile phone transmitters, repeaters and other grid based connections, the system in question is called Mesh, and it has also been installed in large offices and hotels for many years, but due to cost limitations it hasn’t really become a consumer product….until now The item we are specifically referring to will offer “across the property” wifi connection with minimal installation and setup. The starter kit consists of 3 transmitters, where one unit plugs directly into your router and replaces your existing wifi connection, the other two units (more can be added if required) can be positioned anywhere around the building, providing it can “see” one of the other transmitters. The magic of this system is in the transmitters as they
have two broadcast systems inbuilt, one deals with your conventional wifi signal, the other transmitter is for your “backbone” connection. This uses a different frequency and allows transmitters to share the same wifi, and handle to Passover of traffic as you roam from one transmitter zone to another. Sounds complex, but it’s all done for you so you don’t need to worry about it. The initial configuration is carried out from an app you can download on your smart phone or tablet, where it offers some neat features like parental control - to add time restrictions on specific devices on specific days of the week, or to setup a guest network. The starter packs are available in two models - both packs have 3 repeaters in the kit. The standard model is recommended for properties upto 300 square metres, and the more powerful kit covers upto 600 square metres. Additional devices are available to add to the kit if required. The costs of the kit is £140.00 for the standard kit with the higher powered kit being £205.00. Would be a worthy upgrade to solve any coverage issues before the Christmas rush!
STAFF VACANCY Due to our continuing success we have a vacancy for a Junior member of our sales and support team. ROWHURST LEATHERHEAD’S ‘BLESSED PLOT’
A large audience heard the first monthly lecture of the Leatherhead & District Local History Society’s new season when Lucy Quinnell of Fire & Iron Gallery talked about Rowhurst, the house owned by her family since 1932 but whose origins are a source of speculation. Rowhurst is located on a spur in North Leatherhead at the highest point in the area, 60 Lucy Quinnell metres above sea level, between two tributaries of the River Mole. The house was evidently built in three phases: a first building, represented now only by the semi-basement; a second timber-framed building dated to 1346; and the newest part dating from 1632. The semi-basement is a 25 feet square room with flint walls 21⁄2 feet thick. There are five cupboard niches in the walls, suggesting storage of important items, and arches similar to those in a large dovecote in France. Two dovecotes appear in local records yet such a structure would surely not have required such substantial foundations.
Rowhurst
Rowhurst appears as a name from 1418 to 1543 with some fields. The development of 1632 is not documented, which is puzzling. In 1712 the property was mentioned as a ‘messuage’ with 40 acres. Several short tenures followed and the buildings became ruinous. The house was restored in the 20th century when the Quinnell family arrived and ran a forge there. Today’s Fire & Iron Gallery is a development of that tradition.
So how old is Rowhurst really, and how significant is that semi-basement? Edwina Vardey’s A History of Leatherhead describes Leatherhead as ‘a key place in the local government; a centre of royal authority and the site of a minster church.’ King Alfred left the royal vill of ‘Leodridan’ in his will, thought to equate with Pachenesham or North Leatherhead. Later records feature a prison, pound, courthouse, gatehouse and church.
Rowhurst - 1890s Might Rowhurst’s origins date back to that time - or earlier? The semi- basement has been suggested in connection with the missing Anglo-Saxon minster church. Buildings on The Mounts near Randalls Road date from the 1200s, so the earlier church must lie somewhere nearby. Bronze Age and Roman pottery was found at Rowhurst in 2017, and archaeological evidence might still exist beneath the nearby 57-acre Teazle Wood. Fire & Iron’s site is now a nature reserve and Lucy recently led a successful campaign to protect Teazle Wood as a major local conservation area. This month’s L&DLHS lecture on Friday, 16 November will hear authoress Alice Graysharp reveal what happened when her mother, Edith Tompkins, was evacuated to Leatherhead as a child during the Second World War. The monthly talks start at 8pm in the Letherhead Institute with coffee served from 7.30pm. Entrance is just £2. The Museum closes in December until April 2019 but next year’s temporary exhibitions may include a special tribute to local historian Goff Powell whose recent death sadly meant the loss of one of the history society’s best loved and most active figures. POEM CORNER REFLECTIONS I have a problem - don’t we all With the mirror on my wall Which shouldn’t lie, or so they say, But mine deceives me every day! I stand, sideways, and give a smile But find it hard to reconcile The flabby figure that I see With the slender shape I thought was me! A modern mirror should reflect The image we yearn to project, The “dream” of what we crave to be And not this harsh reality!!

PANCREATIC CANCER IS TOUGH:
Tough to diagnose. Tough to treat. Tough to research. The survival rate is staggering. Only 3%. Despite being the 10th most common cancer in the UK, I was shocked to discover that that it only receives 1% of the UK cancer research budget*. In June 2016, local resident, Sue Giddings returned from holiday and turned yellow! She was diagnosed with jaundice caused by a mass at the neck of her pancreas that was blocking her bile duct. Over the next three months she had scans and biopsies that all proved to be inconclusive. In September 2016 Sue underwent dramatic surgery that lasted 9 1/2 hours. Called the Whipple procedure it entailed removing part of the pancreas, all of the bile duct, gallbladder, duodenum and some lymph nodes. Currently, surgery is the only option for dealing with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic Cancer UK is working to change this. They work hard to support those affected by the disease by offering expert, personalised support and information. They fund ground breaking innovative research that will change how we understand, diagnose and treat pancreatic cancer. They campaign for change; for better care, treatment and research and for pancreatic cancer to have the recognition it needs. Prior to diagnosis Sue had only experienced some acid reflux, mild upset tummy and some weight loss. Following
48 Looklocal Magazine - November 2018
her surgery Pancreatic cancer was confirmed. Six months of intensive and very unpleasant chemotherapy followed. Sue now has six monthly scans and is currently fit and well and enjoying life to the full! Never one to rest on her laurels, to mark the two year anniversary of the success of her surgery and treatment at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Sue decided to hold a fundraising event. A cream tea in the beautiful garden of her home that she shares with her husband Brian. Sue and Brian welcomed many friends into their home and garden and served 120 scones (all freshly baked by Sue that morning) along with homemade strawberry jam (made with the strawberries Brian had grown on their allotment), clotted cream and of course, countless pots of tea. All this, along with a raffle, sale of produce from the allotment and a huge selection of books, Sue’s event raised an amazing £1190 plus gift aid. Following the tremendous success Sue plans to make it an annual event…..once she can face baking scones again!! If you would like to find out more about this amazing charity, Pancreatic Cancer UK or you would like to make a donation go to www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk *spend by National cancer Research Institute Partners. BMW3 Saloon CAR REVIEW
One of the rewarding treats of for any car enthusiast has to be the highly sophisticated & stylish Paris Motor Show. And it was no different this time around, a showpiece battlefront of car sales. For me, the car of class was the new BMW 3 Saloon. The seventh generation of the brand & bound to continue. Since its launch in 1975, BMW’s most successful model has continuously improved. No wonder more than fifteen million have been sold worldwide. The latest motoring masterpiece, with its revised styling, superb driving dynamics, supreme handling & a host of innovative features, will be up for grabs from March 9, next year. On its captivating debut, in October in Paris, it had a look of quality without a mind-boggling asking price. The company’s 129,932 workers, and especially its inventive brain-box designers & specialised engineers, must be proud of their product. BMW claim the 3 Series saloon, with sales of 15 million, is the heartbeat of the company. The latest design benefits from revised proportions, a longer wheelbase, reduced weight & drag with neat & tidy precise lines that underpin it’s superior driving dynamics & road holding. It also revels in a fresh range of standard options for the clear & precise centre console, as well as safe feel revised leather steering wheels with multi-function buttons and thumb rests. It is taller, longer, roomier and wider than its predecessor. The cabin has been improved to maximise comfort with more leg & headroom for the occupants. Even getting
out has been made easier for rear passengers with the door aperture height increased. Occupants will be joined by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a clever digital operation that responds to the spoken prompt “Hey BMW”. This triggers the new era for the group in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions merely by speaking to it. Wow! The system helps the driver; learns their preferences, is familiar with their favoured settings; seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation facility. “Take me home” you order and it does. You can even give your Personal Assistant a pet name to create individuality. Not only does it obey your command it assists and provides casual rejoinder conversation. Saying “I’m cold” will stir the Assistant to adjust the temperature. Ask it where the nearest petrol station is and, warning you about traffic jams, it will guide you there. The astute updates on the car’s advanced technology allied to BMW’s anxiety to ensure the customer is satisfied they are getting their moneys worth, is a treasure. I don’t want to appear to be assuming the role of a salesman, but I confess I am a fan and would advise a potential buyer : go for it... Specification and choice. BMW320d. Power 190HP. BOOKHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION NOVEMBER NEWS
Bookham flooding problems – an update. At last, there is some good news regarding the ongoing flooding problems, particularly around the area of the squareabout at the bottom of East Street and the High Street. During the last 18 months, several attempts have been made to locate the cause of the problem, without success, due to possible serious damage to underground pipes, which cannot cope with the volume of water during sustained rainfall. This led to various meetings with the water authorities, the local council and drainage specialists, culminating in the conclusion that the area in question needs underground research using the most advanced scanning equipment so that a reliable and long lasting solution could be found. In order to achieve this, the BRA organised a petition asking Surrey County Council for sufficient funding to carry out the necessary investigation. The petition was accepted by the SCC Local Committee and formal notification has recently confirmed that £30,000 has been allocated for the project, which will commence within this financial year. There is no commitment at the moment to the resolution stage, but this is a step in the right direction to identify the underlying causes of the flooding. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
War Memorial Restoration The War Memorial in St Nicolas churchyard was erected after WW1 and now being 100 years old has become rather dilapidated. Peter Seaward, (BRA Chairman) and Arthur Field (BRA Projects Manager) took on the task of identifying suitable restoration companies, dealing with the Church Authorities and MVDC to have the memorial restored to its former glory. Following the initial clean, using techniques specifically for old stone work, the second stage of the restoration, the re-painting of the engraving, has been completed. In addition to the restoration work at St Nicolas, the memorial at All Saints, Little Bookham has also been cleaned. There are four names on the memorial and church records show that another seven individuals should be commemorated. Discussions are taking place on how this may resolved. The high quality of the work is due to the skills of the restoration company, Stonewest, so next time you are in the village, take a moment to have a look at the memorial and remember those from this village that gave their lives for this country 100 years ago.

DISTRACTION BURGLARY
With winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of this ongoing work, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. We would not recommend that you agree for any work to be done without checking that the business offering this service is totally legitimate and reputable. Many areas have directories for businesses that have received positive customer feedback. Also, Trading Standards and Consumer Direct can offer advice on businesses and service providers who should be trustworthy, reliable and who will carry out work for a reasonable price. In many cases, nothing can beat
personal recommendation. It is never a good idea to allow someone you don’t know to carry out work for you. They may not be qualified or competent to do the work and what may sound like a cheap price could turn out to be an expensive choice, particularly if you end up paying out again to have bad work put right!! Additionally, distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting as they prey on people’s trust in “authority”. For example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the house to “carry out checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Finally, if you are ever put in a position of feeling in any way vulnerable or frightened by unwanted callers, please call the police on 999.

SANTA SETS THE PACE FOR FUN RUNS!
Do as I do: Santa sets the pace in the stunning Painshill landscape
Santa’s cover was blown this week, when he was spotted out and about in pursuit of a great new fun run venue for Princess Alice Hospice in Esher. The red-suited one was pictured on a recce in the spectacular setting of Painshill Park, Cobham – where he traced the 5km route that’s been designed to delight everyone who signs up. Sweeping vistas, magnificent follies and pretty waterside paths make this, what must be the most picturesque fun run route of all, to kick off the 2018 season. We’ve also added a second date to the Bushy Park schedule. This brings to four the number of Royal Park runs – two each in Richmond Park and Bushy Park. There’s a choice of dates spread over four weekends in good time for Christmas. All routes are 5km – you can run, jog, walk or just stroll – alongside the hundreds of fellow Santas expected to turn out to raise much-needed funds for your local Hospice. Runs are scheduled on Saturday 25th November at
Painshill Park; 1st December at Richmond Park and the 9th and 16th December at Bushy Park. Runners can be big or little, on four legs as well as two(!), in teams, or singles and family groups. Entry is £18 for 16s and over, which includes a free Santa Suit; £8 for five- to 15-year-olds which includes a free elf hat. Under-5s are free. Book by 31st October for a 20% discount. “Our festive fundraisers always raise lots of smiles as well as vital funds – it’s inspiring to see the turnout at these popular events,” said Nigel Seymour, Director of Fundraising at the hospice which serves a population of around 1 million in Surrey, SW London and Middlesex. “We rely on fundraising and our community support to generate the £9.9 million we need every year to provide Hospice care free of charge. We are so grateful to each and every fundraiser, as the money raised really does make an enormous difference to the care we can provide at Christmas.” For details and to book, visit pah.org.uk/santafunrun
