WELCOME OUR SEPTEMBER MAGAZINE Who said British Summers are awful? It’s certainly been a scorcher this year hasn’t it? As World Cup fever and the Wimbledon tennis season seem like a distant memory, I wonder if this year will be etched in our memories like the last big heat wave summer of 1976? I was 12 then and I remember being on holiday in Cornwall with my family, it was totally lovely, and will always be a cherished memory. This year I’ve struggled to keep my hanging baskets alive and like all the gardens around here, my grass has looked so brown for most of the past months. By the time you read this, I hope it will have perked up a little! This month we are delighted to share a lovely feature with you about the Fetcham United Charities. An interesting read kindly provided by Nigel Turner. Back in July we enjoyed a sunny afternoon at The Grange in Bookham and we are delighted to share some colourful photos of this, their 80th Anniversary event. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all who attended and the sunshine certainly added to the occasion. One of the many benefits on offer to those living in Bookham is the large selection of groups and activities which take place in the village. One such long established group, Bookham Flower Club, will be celebrating their Emerald Anniversary shortly! We include news of recent and forthcoming events and I hope the members enjoy the up and coming celebrations. We send Good Luck to all the children starting school this month, and also to the young adults flying the nest and heading to Universities far and wide. May all your new adventures be good ones … That’s about it from me, until next time, do take care,
Ros

Fetcham Charities Hits 100! Fetcham United Charities, which runs the Reading Room and the Fetcham Almshouses, celebrates its centenary this year. To mark the occasion, the Almshouse gardens and the Reading Room will be open to visitors on the afternoon of Saturday September 8th – the first of two national heritage weekends. You may have driven past their buildings on the way from Fetcham to Cobham. The Reading Room is the first building on your left immediately after the railway bridge. The Almshouses are opposite, on the corner with River Lane. Although the charity in its current ‘united’ form was founded in 1918, its origins go back to the seventeenth century with the founding of the local Henry Smith Charity in 1627 and the George Shiers Charity in 1685. These charities provided support to single women, local boys wishing to become apprentices, and to the poor of the village. Other charities funded the building of almshouses for local people in need. In total five charities combined one hundred years ago to form Fetcham United Charities. Run by volunteer trustees, mainly appointed by St
Mary’s Church and Mole Valley District Council, the charity ensures that the Almshouses and Reading Room continue to provide a benefit to local people. If you visit the porch of St Mary’s church, you can see the large stone which records the founding of the George Shiers Charity. Sir George was ‘Lord of Slyfield Manor’ near Stoke D’Abernon. The Almshouses Over the centuries, almshouses have provided an early form of social housing throughout England. There are almshouses in many Surrey towns and villages, including Ashtead, Bookham and Leatherhead. The original Fetcham almshouses were located near the far end of Kennel Lane by a chalk pit. The residents were allowed to sell chalk to help support themselves. However, in the early 1800s, four new almshouses were built on the site of the Reading Room - with living quarters on the ground floor and sleeping quarters upstairs. They housed families as well as the elderly. By the 1880s, these almshouses had fallen into disrepair and needed to be replaced. Using local donations, five small almshouses were built in the ‘Abbottsfield’

opposite. The accommodation was cramped and basic. There was no running water and residents had to use an outside bathhouse situated at what is now the end of Monks Green. By the second half of the 20th century, these Victorian almshouses clearly needed updating. There was also the opportunity to create new homes through the building of a modern block of flats. Using existing funds and a loan, both these major works were carried out in the 1980s. Renamed ‘Morley Court’ after Eileen Morley - the Chair of Trustees who made it all happen - the old and new blocks can be seen in the attractive garden opposite the Reading Room. Eileen was later awarded an MBE for her ‘services to Fetcham’. Morley Court now comprises of ten self-contained flats providing social housing for single retired persons with local connections. Conveniently situated for the Fetcham shops, some residents have enjoyed living there for over twenty years. The Reading Room In the 1880s, rather than simply demolishing the old almshouses, the charities decided to turn three of them into Fetcham’s first village hall with the fourth serving
as a home for a caretaker. The funds to do this were generated by selling a strip of land to the company that was building the railway line to Guildford. The hall became known as the ‘Reading Room’ because one of its main uses was as a place where local educated ladies were able to read the papers to less fortunate, illiterate, villagers. In the 1980s the Reading Room was substantially renovated. The Caretaker’s House became the kitchen and hall toilets, a new room was added at the back of the main hall, and the garden was landscaped to provide more attractive surroundings. The Reading Room continues to provide a weekly meeting venue for local groups and is available for hire by local residents for family events such as children’s parties. Finding out more You can find out more about the Reading Room and almshouse accommodation by visiting the Fetcham United Charities website at www. fetchamunitedcharities.org. Better still, come and visit them on the afternoon of Saturday 8th September from 2.00pm. Refreshments available!

This month at BABEs is all about reducing our sugar intake.
WHO recommends no more than 6 teaspoons a day. But if breakfast is a small glass of OJ (5 tsps) and a 30gm’s of Alpen (2tsps) you are over the limit before you’ve left the house! Reducing your sugar intake means you will... Snack less, have more energy, sleep better, have much ‘calmer’ periods physically and mentally, reduce hot flushes and other menopausal symptoms, plus lose weight...and keep it off!
HERE’S A FEW TIPS TO KICK IT...
Eat good fats, low fat diets leave you craving carbs! Add avocados, olive and coconut oil to your diet. Get your sweet fix from fruit, berries are best. Swap milk choc for 85% dark, it has an 1/8th of the sugar Get label savvy! Yoghurts contain lots as does ketchup, pasta sauce, baked beans and cereals. 1 teaspoon = 4 grams so aim for less than 24gms a day Stop drinking your sugary drinks, infuse water with fruit to sweeten it instead.

WHY I PLAY GOLF? A PERSONAL VIEW
Why do I play this frustrating game? It can’t be the money, and it’s not for fame. Why this obsession with a little ball With a mind of its own and deaf to my call. White or yellow, or even pink, Still the wretched thing will sink Without trace in lake or ditch, Ignoring my efforts at perfect pitch, Veering left, or right, it finds the Mole Whilst I was trying to find the hole! To try to curb its erratic flight, I’ll fit a bleeper, or a blinking light! Why do I trudge through mud and rain Just in order to finish a game Which even the “pros” haven’t completely mastered, And all I get is thoroughly plastered!!

But then I met the Ladies Brigade Who helped and encouraged and made Every game fun, whatever the score, So I keep on coming back for more. For when autumn tints and silver leaves Shimmer in a gentle breeze, When mists disperse and a view unfurls To reveal a fairway of glistening pearls, When a kestrel hovers, and I stop and look, (But forbear to write in the “birdie” book!), When my tee shot soars – straight as a die And balls even have a perfect lie, When I miss the bunkers and avoid the Mole And my beautiful putt just drops in the hole, Then I punch the air and give a shout “This is what golf is all about”!! The mud and mis-hits are in the past - My only worry – will it last???!!!

GARDENING MATTERS
HOW TO REPAIR BALD PATCHES IN YOUR LAWN Cecelia John: 01372 200 000 | ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk Well, you’ll have a lot of these at the end of summer if you have children/grandchildren, and they look horrible (the bare patches, not the children/grandchildren). Thankfully, there’s no need to worry because with the right seed mix, you can repair your lawn very easily. You’ll need grass seed, top soil, a hose and a lawn rake. Choosing the best grass seed for you will depend on what your lawn’s used for. If it’s often used for the family or as a play area for children, choose a seed mix with added ryegrass to provide a hard-wearing grass. If it’s essentially a show lawn (oh, how I wish…), premium lawn seed mixes contain a blend of the best varieties of grasses to give a super duper lawn. If your lawn is sheltered and doesn’t receive direct sunlight - eg at the corner of the house, under a tree or under a trampoline - choose a mix specially designed for shaded areas. And now, how to repair that bald patch. First, use a lawn rake to remove any debris. It’s important to rake your lawn, especially during autumn and winter, as leaves and other debris can damage it, due to a lack of light and air. Before you start sowing any seed, scatter a layer of top soil over the area and then sprinkle the grass seed evenly over that area. Try to make sure that the seed is sown close enough together so that no patches
are left, but spread out enough for the grass to grow. The back of the pack will state recommended application rates. As a more general one-step solution, MiracleGro Patch Magic is a pretty effective patching product, containing grass seed, feed and coir compost, which is perfect for repairing smaller patches. To protect your newly-sown grass seed from birds, cover the seed with a light sprinkling of top soil, taking care not to block all the light from the seeds. This is not foolproof by any means, and you may have to net the area to prevent birds being able to land and peck…. trust me, they can undo all your good work in a matter of minutes once they have called up all their friends to join them on this upmarket picnic. And keep it wellwatered: a watering can with a fine rose is perfect for this, as it will water the area very lightly and stop you drowning it. Also, keep your lawn free of weeds & moss by applying a high phosphate food specific for lawns as soon as the seeds have germinated. Finally, don’t be in a hurry to mow the new grass, and for the first few months, don’t cut your grass too short… oh, and make sure the blades are very sharp. Hey presto, no more bald patches (till next summer).

BOOKHAM flower club
Bookham Flower Club, which meets in the Barn Hall on the first Monday of the month, has welcomed a variety of demonstrators at their monthly meetings, this year. In April, Tracey Griffin was “Inspired by Nature” and produced six different arrangements, some country style and others contemporary. The May meeting saw demonstrator Jennifer Thompson produce beautiful arrangements depicting the essential warm up, various exercise routines including cycling, aerobic exercise and using weights, and finally a cool down for her “A Floral Workout”theme. In June, a very different afternoon was enjoyed when Nadira Burkhi called her demonstration “Pashmina Fever”, and linked her designs to her beloved collection of fine shawls and talked about her upbringing in Pakistan and the significance of pashminas/shawls in her home country. The Flower Club had a stall at Bookham Village Day and it was decorated with butterflies, birds and flying insects, and sold many beautiful arrangements in assorted and inventive containers. It was a glorious and successful afternoon, and there were many compliments on how beautiful the stall looked. Carol Ferris demonstrated at the July meeting – with a holiday theme “Wish You Were Here”. Followed in August by a Tea Party at “The Grange” in Bookham.
30 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
As well as enjoying The Grange’s renowned scones and cakes, members were given tours of the Grange workshops and opportunities for retail therapy. During the year Sue Slark has run Workshops so that members can improve their flower arranging skills and these have been well attended. At most monthly meetings there is a themed competition and the workshops are designed to give members confidence to compete. An interesting afternoon is anticipated for the September meeting withthe intriguing title of “Fifty Shades of Autumn” and October should appeal to all gardeners with the demonstrator’s title of “Gardener’s Delight”. Bookham Flower Club celebrates its Emerald Anniversary in November with a very special meeting and lunch for members along with some cake and bubbly maybe! We can drink to another 55 years of flower arranging in Bookham. Bookham Flower Group is a member of NAFAS – National Association of Flower Arranging Societies and details of what is going on in the area can be found on their website: www.surreynafas.org.uk. Our meetings start at 2.15pm, and they are a very enjoyable way to start the week. If you are interested in flowers why not come along and give us a try!

Nestled in the heart of Fetcham you’ll find the gem that is 1st Fetcham Scouts. In a world where children are obsessed with screens, social media and selfies it’s so very refreshing to see young people thriving in this most traditional of organisations. But the Scouting community in Fetcham is about to embark on it’s biggest adventure yet by taking on the challenge of building a new scout hut. Scouting in Fetcham dates back to 1942, and there are now over 190 boys, girls and young adults (age 6 to 18) who participate in Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer groups at the Cock Lane hut. Sadly, the hut is falling apart around their ears and does not offer all the necessary facilities required to accommodate the many
children, including those with special needs, who want to get involved. The children, and dedicated helpers, are working tirelessly to raise funds but they need help from local patrons who would like to get involved. If you have a passion for Scouting or believe in supporting the future development of young people in our local area, then the 1st Fetcham Project HQ team want to hear from you! Whether you can offer a trade skill or contribute to the slowly growing pot of funds needed for this project then get in touch today. Just email Anita Chamberlain, the driving force behind this project at anita.chamberlain@1stfetchamscouts.org.uk or give Anita a call on tel: 07753 226586.

7O YEARS OLD & STILL TREADING THE BOARDS
Surrey is blessed with many quality Drama Societies and Am-Dram groups, and one of the foremost will be celebrating its 70th anniversary later this year. West Horsley Independent Players, affectionally known as WHiPS, began in 1948 as a drama Group within the local WI (Women’s Institute). One difficulty back then was finding female-only plays to perform, so various men-folk were drafted in. After a while the Group became independent of the WI and has remained so to this day. From 1954 – 1972 the barn behind The Barley Mow was used by the club for rehearsals and performances. Today’s group fills West Horsley Village Hall with at least two productions a year both comedy and drama. The Society has two offshoots - WHiPS Youth Theatre for 13-to-18-year olds, and Whippets for 6-to-13-year olds. The youngsters are as ambitious as the adults, staging full-blown musicals such as Oliver! and The Addams Family to compliment the senior productions.
50 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
Every other year some of the youngsters join the adults on stage for a traditional Pantomime. [pic above] A recent milestone was the first production of Dad’s Army on Stage, not surprising as our then Life President was actor Bill Pertwee who was of course Warden Hodges in the BBC Television series. [pic above] Bill and his wife Marion adapted two scripts from the series, and added songs from the period. Currently WHiPS are gearing up for a 70th Anniversary production on 13th October featuring the Premier of Stuart Tomkins intriguing one act play “Platinum Puzzle”, alongside a Grand Cabaret. This will be for all WHiPS members and promises to be a nostalgic reunion. For further information about WHiPS, including membership, auditions, and a gallery of photographs, please visit the website http://horsleyamdram.org or Facebook at www.facebook.com/horsleyamdram

DRIVER BAD HABITS
I am on a swerve, changing direction a wee bit in my motoring column. And how about this for a talking point? Motorists in our region are rated among the country’s guiltiest of bad drivers. So there... Who says so? Not me. It is the result of a countrywide survey by the well respected Accident Advice Helpline, one of the UK’s main injury claim specialists. They help thousands of road accident victims, physically and financially, in legally dealing with the disastrous outcomes of poor and careless driving. Road hoggery (my newly invented dictionary entry) is a curse we careful and considerate drivers abhor - and this survey, citing the South East as a culprit zone, pinpoints the rank bad and their risky attitudes. Bad habits apparently creep in less than two months after drivers have removed their L-plates. And spokesman David Carter revealed:”Our study found that lots of drivers are happy to admit bad practices when they are behind the wheel - and, sadly, we have to deal with the consequences.” So just what are the bad and dodgy habits? Before their first six months are up on their full licence some motorists will have stopped holding the steering wheel in the “ten-to-two” position and are unlikely to check their rear-view mirrors every time they make a manoeuvre. There’s more, says Mr Carter. The average driver, putting their own safety at risk by abandoning the seat belt inside three months, will have run a red light inside four - and, by month five, will be making dodgy illegal U-turns as second nature. “Bad driving habits,” he adds, “can compromise safety and
54 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
our research suggests it is all too easy to let driving standards slip. In fact, a tenth of all those surveyed admitted to having had an accident due to getting slack with following the rules of the road.” So how long does it take drivers in the south-east to fall into dangerously and stupid bad habits? Here’s the Accident Advice Helpline list.... Holding the steering one-handed - three months. Abandoning the “ten-to-two” position - three months. Not checking your mirrors - three months. Changing direction without indicating - four months. Tailgating - four months. Hogging the middle of a motorway - four months. Overtaking dangerously - four months. Running a red light - four months. Driving without a seat belt - two months. Illegal U-turns - four months. Throwing litter out of a car window - three months. Fumbling for something in your bag while driving - five months. Parking on double yellow lines - four months. Pulling out in front, cutting up another car - five months. What the survey failed to reveal was how many loonies on the move in our -four-by-four territory do you see gabbing on their mobile phone or munching butties? Hands up ( but not if you are reading this while driving) if you are blameworthy for any of the above motoring sins. Come on...be honest. By Ted Macauley

NOTICE SURREY POLICE
ALL CHANGE IN SEPTEMBER!
September brings changes for many of us. Returning to work after a much needed holiday, going back to work or school; or even starting at a new school or college for the first time. This can be a very stressful time, when normal routines are disrupted and new routines have to be established. What has any of this got to do with your local policing team? It’s a fair question. The point is that it’s very easy to get caught up in all these changes and to forget the simple precautions that you would normally take to safeguard your possessions and property. It’s easy to forget to secure windows and doors when leaving the house in a hurry. Remembering to lock your car when it is parked and taking all items of value with you! All of these are things that you have probably got into the habit of doing automatically but it is easy to be distracted when there are so many other things on your mind at the time. It only takes a simple lapse to give a perfect opportunity for someone to take advantage and to gain entry to your home or your vehicle and to make off with things that are really important to you. During the summer months, many of us will have been gardening on a regular basis. Sometimes, it is tempting to leave equipment, such as mowers and garden tools out, rather than locking them away. We always seem to receive a significant increase in reported thefts of quite valuable garden equipment during the summer, often because they’ve been left out or put away in insecure sheds. This still remains a problem at this time of year. It’s also worth noting that would-be burglars will often
make use of your tools, ladders etc to gain entry to your home. Many of you will also be doing last minute shopping before returning to work or school. Please keep your purses and wallets safe when you are out and about. It is easy to be distracted and it only takes seconds for an “expert” to deprive you of your cash, credit cards, driving licence and, if they are all together in a bag, your car keys and other personal possessions. Think of the inconvenience and unfortunate consequences of this happening to you! Always keep your handbag, purse or wallet close to you and never leave your bags unattended when you are out shopping. Also, be aware of who is around you when you are using cash points outside banks and ATMs. Quite a few people are tricked into being distracted by someone when withdrawing cash. Sometimes, you will have been seen entering your security code and then the card is taken while you are distracted and it can then be used to withdraw cash or pay for items using your account. Always make sure that no one is watching when you are entering your PIN code and do not respond to anyone approaching you while you are doing this. If they are genuine, then they will be happy to wait a few seconds while you complete your transaction. None of this advice is meant to cause anyone undue concern. It is just a reminder to do everything possible to avoid the additional stress of having to deal with a theft or burglary, when there is plenty already going on in your lives to keep you busy.

NEWS FROM THE
BOOKHAM RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Although the celebrations of Village Day 2018 are now a distant memory, it was very encouraging to see that the BRA Bookstall was as busy as ever and fortunately, was as well stocked with books as in previous years. Thanks are due to the many people who donated books for sale, as well as the volunteers who spent a scorching Saturday back in June, helping to look after the steady flow of customers. Special thanks of course must go to Tony Alsbury, who spends months leading up to Village Day, accumulating ever mounting stock, ready for display on the day of the event. It doesn’t end there, for as soon as the bookstall is dismantled, he then starts all over again building supplies for the next year. If you have any books that you no longer require, there is no need to wait until nearer the next Village Day, as Tony will be pleased to accept donations any time. He can be contacted by phone – 01372 456464 or via his e-mail: mail@alsbybook.plus.com As in previous years, the takings on the day are split 50% between the Bookhams Resident’s Association and the Bookham Community Association. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Monthly Litter-Pick dates reminder! The hugely successful campaign to keep our village as tidy as possible is now well established, thanks to Margaret Lawson and her team. If you would like to join them on the usual first Sunday in the month, make a note that the next sessions will be on 2nd September and 7th October. The meeting point is the Lower Shott car park - gloves, grabs and high vis tops will be provided.
