hope all who came enjoyed it as much as we did. Coverage from the day will appear in our September magazines. We are thrilled to share our visit to a lovely local tribute to and celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th Birthday which took place at St Nicolas’ Church on Saturday 11th June. It was beautifully presented and enjoyed by many. I loved seeing such a wonderful selection of memorabilia spanning 9 decades. Congratulations go to The Dawnay School on their sporting achievements, see page 18 to find out about that ! There are lots of lovely summer events going on locally over the next few months and we have shared a few local highlights on our What’s On page for you to peruse. I went to a very enjoyable evening at The Medicine Garden last week, and although it’s obviously not in Bookham, I thought you might like to see what went on and what they have to offer …. well worth a visit if you haven’t already been.

The 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated in style at St Nicolas’ Church in the village on Saturday 11th June - I went along with my camera and am delighted to share with you here this lovely event. Preparation for this day started at the beginning of the year and praise must go to Angela Stevens, Joy Lord & Pam Secker for all their hard work and fantastic organisational skills! Stunning flower displays throughout the church were prepared by a team of keen arrangers :- Tina Lamborn, Jill Vercoe, Jennie Taylor, Jean Preston, Valerie Newman, Diane Greenman, Thelma Bradford, Sheila Wishart, Denise Etherington, Libby Matts & Mary Eason. The flowers were stunning and really added to the occasion. In addition to the floral contributions, the church provided a splendid venue to display a wide selection of images and relevant Royal memorabilia, spanning across the whole 9 decades of Queen Elizabeth II’s life. These had been kindly lent by a selection of local contributors. Music was provided throughout the day by Peter Lutton, the director of music at St Nicolas, who played the church organ beautifully. Chantry Wind Ensemble was led by Terrance Halfpenny and a string quartet was led by Rev David Sigworth. All were enjoyed. Refreshments were also served in the morning and the afternoon. What a lovely local celebration! Thank you for inviting us to attend.

ASK BRUCE:
D O G G Y PA D D L E This month, we tackle swimming lessons canine-style, as requested by reader Michele who has a six-year-old boxer that loves to paddle but never actually swims. Swimming is an excellent source of exercise for dogs. It’s great for building muscle strength without putting too much pressure on their joints, which is why it’s often used as a post-injury rehabilitation tool. Some breeds, particularly labradors and spaniels, take to it, well, like a duck to water! Others, such as chihuahuas and pugs, are very reluctant. Boxers can and do swim, but are not renowned for it. This is partly due to their small tail and muzzle design, neither of which makes for natural doggy water-babies. Here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, our dogs love to swim and learn from each other. We have large paddling pools for them to swim in and smaller ones just for splashing around. For the less confident swimmers, the smaller paddling pools help familiarise them with water and build their confidence. They can then watch their other four-legged friends swimming in the larger pools and eventually join in too. Like children, dogs learn from other dogs and tend to copy. What better encouragement than seeing your pals having a splash and wanting to join in? As a result, we’ve seen breeds that stereotypically don’t like water turn into voracious swimmers – including boxers! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Bookham. The Dawnay School CELEBRATE VALUES AWARD
The Dawnay Dodgeball Team is celebrating with pride their recent Values Award, presented for an outstanding performance in the Dodgeball Tournament held at The Surrey School Games Spring Festival. The Values Award is presented to the school that demonstrates consistently the values of honesty, teamwork, self-belief, respect, passion and determination throughout the competition. The Dawnay represented Mole Valley in the Surrey County Final and finished a very close second! The award is a credit to their admirable sporting attitude, and the plaque, which was presented by Premier Sport in a whole school assembly, is now proudly displayed in the school entrance. The components that make up the Values Award are of particular significance to everyone at The

Dawnay because they encompass the school’s approach to all areas of school life and incorporate ideals that underpin the ethos of the school. The award followed a culmination of sporting success throughout the spring and early summer terms. The netball team represented Mole Valley at The Surrey School Games Final and finished a creditable 4th out of the 12 regional finalists from across Surrey. The girl’s football team came a close 2nd in the local schools Football Tournament that was decided by penalty shoot-outs, and the rugby team finished 3rd in their competition. Just recently, the girl’s cricket team won the Girls Kwik Cricket Tournament at Leatherhead Cricket Club.

NIEVE DE PINA Pineapple Sorbet
My clients are now bringing along their families for speciality cooking sessions, and currently, Mexican seems to be a real hit. While I have put my healthy slant on traditional quick Mexican food, I can only agree that home-made churros with chocolate sauce are spectacular! However, this pineapple and fresh mint sorbet has to be the star of the show – so quick, so fresh and so utterly delicious, not to mention the health benefits of bromelain (digestive enzyme found in pineapple) and what that does for you!
Method Ingredients
½ medium, ripe pineapple 1 x 450g bag frozen pineapple juice of lime handful of fresh mint leaves
1. Cut the pineapple in half lengthways. Remove the core carefully and scoop out the flesh. Cut the flesh into chunks. 2. Place half the fresh pineapple (eat the other half!) in a food processor and blend until smooth. Add the frozen pineapple with the lime juice and mint leaves and whizz until thick and of sorbet consistency. 3. Pile the sorbet into the pineapple halves and freeze until ready to serve (within 2 hours). SERVES 4-6

WORDS BY DAVID KID JENSEN
SIR GEORGE MARTIN
I was greatly saddened recently to read of the passing of the man universally known and loved as the 5th Beatle, the wonderful producer and renowned gentleman, Sir George Martin. I was privileged to get to know him in my Capital Radio days, as George was one of the founders of Capital Radio. He used to come and visit the studios and was always interested in the process and the way we operated. He also wrote the official themes for both Capital Radio and also Radio 1. Sir George, who died at the age of 90, was one of the key engineering and production team at EM. He was part of the generation of pop pioneers who used to wear white lab technicians overalls before work clothing became more relaxed and T -shirts and denim became more the norm. He first met The Beatles in 1962 and went on to have no fewer than 49 hits with the fabled 4, including 30 number one singles and 23 numbe ones. No wonder that he was so admired and successful. In the 50s, he recorded mainly comedy and novelty records with the likes of Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Bernard Cribbins among others, but he was particularly excited about working with the Beatles with their off-beam wit and presences and he was convinced they had what it would take to become a global success story. When I think of Sir George today, I am reminded of an interview he did in 2007 in which he told Mark Ellen that he had all the money he could want and that he tended to look at people and think; “Are you a good human being? That’s what impresses me most, rather than what they’ve achieved. These days, people don’t believe in anything apart from money and success. I really believe family and love are more important than anything. Love is truly all you need.....
GARDENING M AT T E R S
A slight change of subject this month, and some help for the more technologically-confident amongst you. If you want to identify that weird succulent you’ve grown for ages but never had a name for, or the shrubs/roses in the garden that were there when you moved in, here’s what to do if even your gardening friends can’t help. Almost everything you want is on the internet, so first of all, take a photo of the unknown flower. Then join a gardening forum on the web. There are thousands: almost all require you to register before you can become a member. The quality between groups is very variable, as is the level of expertise, the number of members and the group’s vitality. The most useful site to find them is probably Facebook, where it’s easy to post photos. There are well over 500 gardening groups there, the biggest with 2500 members who are scattered all over the globe, but since the UK covers climate zones 7-10, many Australasian and American gardeners will be working in conditions similar to yours and will be growing comparable plants. Each member will be linked to sometimes 100s of others beyond the immediate boundaries of that particular garden group, so any query and picture you post is potentially far-reaching. Some of the garden groups will be devoted to plants that you may hate or which may not be legally grown, but there are many devoted to rock gardens, pool gardens, cacti and succulents, conservatory plants, and so on (and on). Each group listing has an ‘About’ section, so you can find out what it’s for before committing yourself to joining.
Google Images or Flickr are a huge help, and Flickr often has the most astonishing plant pictures. Google has the biggest range, and also displays the supposed name of each picture, though there are lots of misnamed photos, and even some of pet donkeys called ‘Marigold’ or ‘Alchemilla’.....which won’t produce baby donkeys if you plant them, sadly. But riffle through a couple of pages and you will soon find a consensus on what your plant may be, if you’re in roughly the right area. Do another search on the full name to pin things down even further. When you’ve found what you think is the right plant, go to one of the most useful sites for us Brits, the RHS website. Type ‘rhs’ into your search engine (you will have to add ‘uk’, as most search engines seem to be American-based), and the first hit is https://www.rhs. org.uk Type into the search bar the name of your plant and its database will bring up a list for you to peruse, with details of colour, height, spread, conditions needed and so on. It’s very rarely failed me. Forgive me, those of you who are not computer/ internet literate, or who knew all this already. It’s hard to please all the people all the time, but it’s grand to have a go. Back next month.

here are few alternative attractions that could have tempted me away from watching, glass of bubbly in hand, the dolphins frolic around the millionaires’ yachts at anchor in the bay opposite the superb Royal Mirage Hotel’s exclusive beach in Dubai. With a bearable 30 degrees of sunshine tanning Trophy Wife and the bikinibeauties stretched under the wafts of welcome breezes off the Gulf waters, the thought of being anywhere else could only be an intrusive and not too bright idea. But it was countdown time on an invitation to attend a garden party at the British Embassy, an unmissable bash with all the great and good expats gathered in their finery to celebrate our troops’ distinctions in Afghanistan and cough up a few quid for a welfare fund. No footballers, no Beckhams, Rooneys or even Lewis Hamiltons to join in from their second or third £5m mansions on the spectacular Palm project - they were all on duty elsewhere around the globe. The chauffeur-driven Rollers and stretch saloons disgorged the megarich and their gorgeous, bejewelled
mates on a tidal wave of wealth and the ambassador and his wife welcomingly shook nearly 600 hands. It was clearly a time to go....funky.Or as close as you dare get without veering right off the wall and feeling well out of it. And that was dead easy in a mammoth black Bentley Mulsanne, darkened windows ‘n’ all, like an essential extra from The Sopranos or The Godfather but with a level of weighty individuality that made all the other luxy limos, including the Phantoms, look commonplace. Which they are in the Emirates... Mind you, you need to be an oil baron to fund, say, the 512BHP gas-guzzling engine which, around town and with a bit of heavy footing, gives you no better than around the mid-teens to the gallon. It is, after all, one mighty and muscular motor, upper-upper class inside, with bags of room for five of even the best fed and rounded of us, and with a good getaway turn of speed that tops 180mph. If you dare... And the boot could have swallowed up the embassy’s grand piano easily. The stool, too. And the pianist. The violinist as well, though she was very slender.....
44 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2016
Like most mansion-sized limos, it is more settled and best-behaved in a straight line on motorway treks than being jauntily skipped around the trickier, tighter stuff, and you could get the rear tyres close to meltdown if you really hoofed its 6.75-litre motor with its pair of turbo-chargers. What you do get in stacks is a gloriously hushed cabin, all soft leather and shiny wood, sheer presence and an announcement that you have arrived - just as we did with our chauffeur who was more chuffed than any of the drivers of limos costing nearly or just as much. I found out what fixed the grin on his face when I later drove it 80 miles to a desert retreat for some oasis-side rest-and-recuperation - and, without a rival Rolls Royce in sight, it dominated the car park where it was favourably positioned. Mind you, I’m relieved I wasn’t forking out for the fuel. That’s the joy of being a reviewer... Specification: Model: Mulsanne Engine V8 turbo-charged 6.75-litre. Speed 184mph, 0-60 in 5.1seconds. PERFORMANCE MACHINES
There are many reasons why you would need a high performance computer. It may be that you play games, photo edit, video edit, or you do 3D design or animation. If your machine’s performance is not up to the task, this will result in poor graphics quality or very jerky performance, or maybe it’s taking ages to reflect any changes you have made. If so, now is the time to address the problem. We have a significant range of truly high performance PCs and laptops which will consign your previous issues to the “distant memory” department. Our PCs are all custom-built so that we can create the very best machine for your purposes. The laptops are pre-assembled and enjoy a stunning specification. What to look for: PROCESSOR The raw performance is supplied by the processor (CPU), and the device you should be going for is the Intel Core i7 quad core device. Some laptops have Core i7 CPUs with dual core CPUs, but they provide you with less power and are generally of lower performance. SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE Programs and data are stored on the hard drive in the PC; the faster you can access this information, the faster the PC will respond. The hard drive types that have been used in PCs for the last 20 years have been mechanical hard drives, and whilst they can hold huge amounts of data, their access speed
is quite slow. The solid state hard drive offers dynamic performance, up to 20 time faster than a mechanical drive, but the SSD’s capacity tends to be less, so our solution is to install both. The SSD is used to store your Windows system and programs, whilst the mechanical hard drive is used to store all your data. GRAPHICS CARD This is a device which lives inside your machine and manages the information displayed. There are two main manufacturers of graphics cards: NVidia and Radeon, with a variety of models in the range. Going for the most up to date graphics card could cost as much as £600.00 just for the card, but selecting the next model back in the range (which was the very best graphics card only 2 or 3 months ago) will reduce the cost of the graphics card to £290.00. OTHER FACTORS Having at least 8Gb of RAM is important, as is a good powerful power supply to provide a reliable and regulated power feed to the components. A quality case with good cooling and thermal qualities is also essential, and finally, the motherboard must be of a suitable standard to cater for your needs. There are a number of factors you need to consider, so before you make that decision, ensure you come and talk to us to ensure you are covering all the aspects required.

RE SID ENTS ’ AS S O C I AT I O N TRANSFORM LEATHERHEAD - FINAL DRAFT MASTERPLAN Following an exhibition at the Old Barn Hall earlier in the year and a presentation at the BRA AGM in May by the Transform Leatherhead team, we are aware that not all Bookham residents will be familiar with the Transform Leatherhead masterplan. Therefore, to bring residents up to date, the Transform Leatherhead team has provided a briefing of its work to date and the next steps. The website mentioned below is well worth a visit. Transform Leatherhead – Final Draft Masterplan The project began in early 2015 with the objective of delivering a clear vision and masterplan for the transformation of Leatherhead Town Centre. Over the last year, MVDC has been working with partners, residents and businesses to draw up a blue print for fundamental change to Leatherhead. Full details of the journey so far and all the work that has been undertaken is available at www. transformleatherhead.com. The key to the success of the project so far has been the level of engagement MVDC has enjoyed with the public to help shape the key elements of the Final Draft Masterplan. Residents, workers and visitors want to see a town centre that is vibrant, accessible and an enjoyable place to spend time. The retail offering has to improve and more needs to be made of the area by the River Mole which is an attractive and peaceful place that is currently underutilised. The Masterplan is made up of fifteen principal elements and there has already been significant progress on a number. Work has started on the public realm enhancements in Church Street which will see Waitrose
opening in October, along with changes to the street surface and furniture. This will set the tone for the look and feel of future work within the town centre. MVDC has recently acquired the leasehold on all parts of the Swan Centre, excluding Sainsbury’s, and a programme of short-term enhancements is underway. Plans are being examined to improve and extend the car park and reconfigure some of the existing retail units. For a number of the retailers in the centre, business is good and MVDC will be working hard with them to further improve the shopping experience for local residents. At the end of 2015, MVDC acquired Clare & James House, a key location by the river; this development will become the focal point for the Riverside Quarter. Potentially, it could include a café/restaurant offering, along with a new hotel and high quality apartments. Work is planned to start in 2017. A significant development is planned on the existing Bull Hill/Red House Gardens site which will extend the town centre retail offer and provide improved car parking and significant residential development. In line with the development of this landmark scheme, MVDC & Surrey Highways are looking at options to improve the gyratory system and create new cycle and pedestrian links to make the town centre more accessible. It has been a great start but a lot of hard work lays ahead for the Transform Leatherhead team! Keep up to date with the BRA via our website www. bookhamresidents.org.uk or to contact us, please phone 0300 030 9890.

It has always been her dream to be an ambassador for the county she loves. Now, beauty queen Sophie King will fly the flag for Surrey at a national beauty contest. After being named Miss Surrey, the 27-year-old is gearing up to compete in the finals of the Miss Great Britain 2016. “I am so excited about the chance to represent Surrey and be an ambassador for our county. Miss Great Britain is a wonderful opportunity; it gives me a chance to stand up and tell people what great things we have here in Surrey and what a brilliant place it is to live.” Miss Great Britain is the longest running pageant in the UK. Having launched in 1945, the competition is celebrating its 71st anniversary this year.
“These days there is such a negative stereotype associated with pageants - I have two degrees and a great job, I joined MENSA when I was 11, I’m a feminist, a woman with leadership aspirations and a woman wanting to have a family - Why can’t we be it all?” “Breaking the mould is not always easy and will require the county’s support, as well as that of my friends and family, but it will be worth it!” Sophie has been busy supporting local community radio stations, including Surrey Hills and Brooklands Radio. In a few weeks’ time, she will abseil down Epsom Racecourse in aid of the local Harrison’s Fund charity, and she has recently opened Ashtead Village Day.
“I HAVE TWO DEGREES & A GREAT JOB, I JOINED MENSA WHEN I WAS 11, I’M A FEMINIST, A WOMAN WITH LEADERSHIP ASPIRATIONS AND A WOMAN WANTING TO HAVE A FAMILY - WHY CAN’T WE BE IT ALL?”

his month, I would like to take a slightly different tack, but I hope you will bear with me. I would like to ask for help from the residents, businesses and retailers of Bookham to bring a very positive project to fruition. Some of you may know that there has already been some extensive work done to re-generate the Bookham Football Clubhouse, based at the Chrystie Recreation Ground on Dorking Road. All of this work has been with the intention of providing an expanded and regular facility for local residents and our young people in the village and surrounding areas. A huge amount of time and effort has already been spent, but the committee is always looking for any additional offers of funding and/or sponsorship to be able to complete all the work that is needed. If you think that you could help, even in a small way, please let me know and I will put you in touch with the right people. This leads me to the other issues occurring at this location. Many of you may also be aware that we have received a number of reports and complaints in recent months relating to anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and drugs use in and around the clubhouse itself. Some of this relates to catapults being used to smash windows and lights at the clubhouse and also floodlights to illuminate the football pitch itself. Obviously, this presents
C L U B H O U S E
additional risks of broken glass in areas where people walk, often with their dogs. There has also been evidence of drugs use and fire-setting, all of which undermine all the good work that is being done. Police have increased patrols at the location and recently stopped and searched someone, which resulted in an arrest for possession of drugs with intent to supply. Whilst this is, of course, a very positive step forward, other problems still need to be addressed and we need the help of the local community to make this happen. It is particularly ironic that the positive attempts to provide a healthy and positive range of activities for young people are being undermined by the thoughtless actions of a few people of a similar age. We really need to find out who they are and deal with any proven offences robustly as a clear deterrent to others who may be tempted to get involved. We have recently held a very positive review meeting with a number of interested partners, including the police, to focus on what measures (including security measures) can be implemented to deter and identify those people who may be responsible. In addition, we really need anyone who sees any suspicious or potentially criminal activity to call the police on 999 when they actually see it happening. If you can help, please let us know. Thank you.
