Welcome to our super summer issue which covers both July & August. In this issue, we are delighted to bring you coverage of Village Day 2017, which turned out to be an absolutely glorious day. The sun shone so brightly and the crowds turned out to support this lovely community event. I never cease to be amazed by the lovely bunch of people who live and work in Bookham. Well done to everyone who put in a huge amount of effort and who, as always, made this event such a success. Also in this issue, a local restaurant review which I hope will tempt you to pop out for dinner and treat yourselves this summer. As well as this, there’s a feature about a very enjoyable day I spent with the Surrey Home Vet, Claire Neuhoff. I so enjoyed shadowing her and meeting a selection of her delightful clients of the 2 and 4 legged varieties. In my next life, I am going to be a vet! Claire offers a great service which I’m sure will be of interest to many pet lovers locally. In addition, we include coverage on an Open Day at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care...looks like they had such fun!...and we bring you news of a whole selection of other events and activities going on over the summer months in and around the area. We will be taking a short break during August but look forward to bringing you more coverage of local events and news in September. I wish you all a lovely summer and do take care not to burn if you venture out in the sun (this seems like appropriate advice as I write this in a heatwave in mid-June - 30+C - but of course, it may well be totally ridiculous by the time you read this. In which case, don’t forget your umbrella!) Take care, until next time…

TAKING YOUR DOG ABROAD

Telephone
Look Local reader, Jade, has a five-year-old mixed breed rescue dog that she will be relocating to America. Jade asks, how can I prepare her for the journey? This is a big move for all the family and for your dog. At five, she is mature enough to cope with the experience, but not too old for it to be challenging. There’s a lot to think about in advance. Make the most of specialist pet travel companies that can help, from handling paperwork to sourcing pet-friendly airlines. Taking your dog to the USA is relatively straightforward. She will need a vet’s examination no more than 10 days before you go, with a letter from your vet saying she’s fit to travel on a plane. Some US States also require a rabies vaccination. Your dog will need a travel crate for the journey. Do make sure you buy one that’s big enough for her to stand up, lie down, stretch out, and turn around in. She’ll be in it for some time so it’s essential she’s comfortable. It’s very important your dog is familiar with the crate too. Start getting her used to it now: introduce toys, food and treats to build a positive association early. For the journey, be sure to use bedding that she’s used recently at home so that it has a familiar and reassuring scent. I’m sure she’ll be fine and love her new life in America! Recently, I spent a great day out on the road with the Surrey Home Vet, Claire Neuhoff. Claire and her husband Simon own & run two veterinary practices locally. While Simon and two other vets, Sarah and Retief, look after the surgeries, Claire provides a wonderful home visit service for clients who prefer their animals to be seen by a vet in the comfort of their own surroundings. Most of the time, Claire can treat the animals there and then, but if a situation should arise which needs more involved treatment, scans or even surgery, Claire has the back up of the practice facilities which enable her to offer total cover for her patients. We made a whole variety of house visits during the day;, and the animals and the owners were all happy to see Claire. She is very friendly and great with the animals. This was confirmed by the greeting she received on our first visit from two lovely poodles called Chloe and Danny. Claire visits them every few weeks, as their owner is an elderly lady and it is quite difficult for her to get out and about with both dogs. Claire checks them over and cleans the older poodle’s ears and eyes. It was very apparent that both dogs enjoy these regular visits and Danny the younger dog was very keen to receive his treat once Chloe

had been seen by Claire! Both dogs were in pretty good shape. Claire weighed them both and recorded the details on her laptop. Next, we visited Stan, a new client, who is a stunning 3 month old, totally black, German Shepherd puppy. What a lovely dog! Stan was given an all-over puppy check; Claire listened to his heart and gave him a thorough examination. She was happy to report that Stan was in great condition and she was able to advise about vaccines & various other treatments for fleas, worms, ticks & lungworm. Stan is a healthy young dog, and his owners, having owned German Shepherds before, were wellinformed and prepared for this lovely new member of their family. We left Stan and headed to the Epsom surgery where a sweet old Jack Russell called Maxi needed a heart scan. He was a little nervous but he coped very well in the caring hands of the veterinary nurses & Claire. Claire took a whole raft of measurements with the ultrasound machine, which is basically the same equipment that is used on humans. Not all vets offer this service as it requires extra training, but Claire is able to perform the heart scan and interpret the results. Maxi was a star and
Claire recorded her findings which would be relayed to Maxi’s owner. In another room, Retief was working with a nurse on another dog called Buddy. Buddy was having some fairly extensive dental work done. Again, just like us humans, dental X-rays are taken to see the extent of any damaged teeth. Poor Buddy had to have a few teeth removed and also had a big clean-up, and I was assured that he would soon be feeling a whole lot better. By now it was mid-day, and we went off to do another house call, this time to see a sweet little black cat called
family for many years and it was very sad. But this poor little cat was not at all well and this was the kindest thing to do. Claire examined Sid and she very gently asked the owner what she would like to do. The lady knew it was the right time to say good-bye to her beloved pet and she asked if they could sit in the garden because Sid had always loved it out there. Of course, this was totally fine and it was actually a very gentle and peaceful parting. Claire allowed them time to say good-bye before giving Sid a sedative which simply sent him gently to sleep. A
Poppet. Poor Poppet is quite elderly and has a number of medical problems. Claire needed to take some blood to send off for testing. Cats can be tricky when it comes to such procedures, so Claire had taken along one of her nurses to assist. It all went smoothly and Poppet was actually very obliging...and happy to be hiding soon under a chair, having a wash! Her bloods were taken back to the surgery for analysis of her thyroid levels. Poppet’s owner was very grateful and we left them to return to the surgery. When we arrived, a pug who had eaten some bubble gum was being seen. He was given some medication to make him sick - bubble gum is very bad for dogs. This worked well and he was soon allowed to go home. We enjoyed a quick sandwich and a cup of tea. I chatted to the other staff members who were all lovely and obviously really enjoyed working with Claire and the other vets. Paperwork and computer updates were being completed and there was a lovely atmosphere behind the scenes in the practice. The last call of the day was a sad one. A very much loved elderly cat called Sid had to be put to sleep. Claire chatted to the owners: Sid and his brother had been part of their
further euthanasia medication was then given. Although very sad, it was the most peaceful end you could wish for and the owner was very grateful. So much so that she even took the time to write this on Claire’s work Facebook page a few hours later… ‘We had to have our beautiful cat, aged 19, put to sleep yesterday which was an incredibly sad and difficult decision for us. Claire visited our home and I couldn’t have asked for a kinder and more patient vet. Sid went to sleep in our garden in as gentle a way as I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I would highly recommend Claire to anyone and will be using her as our vet from now on. My thanks to Claire and her assistant.’ A poignant end to a lovely day. Surrey Home Vet offers a fabulous and caring service for your pets and it is not expensive for Claire to visit you at home. Her fees are competitively priced, with only a small surcharge to be seen at your home. This is a great help if you are elderly and/or disabled but it is also a lovely service for any pet. I know my own animals would be far happier to be seen in their own home than at a surgery, given the choice. Having seen Claire in action, I would highly recommend Surrey Home Vet.

The Plough at Effingham +
RESTAURANT REVIEW
D
inner at The Plough in Effingham is always a treat! This friendly local pub offers a wonderful menu which changes monthly, and never fails to please. I visited recently with my son Rory and we enjoyed a fabulous meal. As well as the relaxed and friendly interior, The Plough also has a very nice pub garden which is particularly lovely during the summer months. On Wednesday evenings, there is even a regular Jazz in the Garden event to add to the whole experience. This is a great place for family gatherings, romantic nights out (date nights ;- ) or just catching up with friends. It really does suit all. We enjoyed a nice glass of wine each as we chose our meals. We shared a delicious starter, Moroccan-style charmoula swordfish and pomegranate couscous with a light yogurt dressing. This was not only very pretty but also very tasty, the Moroccan spices complimenting the swordfish so well, and not too filling either. All desired qualities for a good starter, I think! For the main courses, we went all out and had a meal

each. I chose a special from the blackboard, roast pork tenderloin, sautéed potatoes, braised red cabbage with sultanas, green beans & red wine jus. Rory selected an 8oz Scottish ribeye steak with garlic & herb butter, chips and salad. Both were absolutely wonderful. The meat in both cases was beautifully tender and cooked just the way we like it, Rory’s steak having hardly touched the grill, and my pork just fell apart at the touch of my knife. Following this feast, we returned to our sharing strategy to try & enjoy but not overface ourselves! You will see from the photo that our passionfruit creme brûlée with passion fruit jelly was very pretty, and was the perfect end to a wonderful meal. Don’t overlook this lovely local pub. The food really is very good indeed and it’s so close to home too. Thanks must go to Jason and his lovely team. We will certainly return soon. To avoid disappointment, it’s a good idea to book your table by calling 01372 458 121. Maybe I’ll see you there soon!

SUMMER TASKS
nd now it’s July, so there’s plenty of deadheading/cutting to do. Keep deadheading annual bedding plants eg petunia - to prolong the flowering display, and cut the flowering stems of sweet pea regularly (probably daily), otherwise they’ll become peas. Deadhead roses continually, unless they’re being grown for their display of autumn hips. Snap out the spent flower stems of pinks, and if the plants are old, take cuttings for next year now, planting new shoots into a 50:50 mixture of compost/sand. Cut delphinium and lupin to the ground after flowering and you may get a 2nd flush of flowers. Prune back the spent stems of philadelphus once the flowering display has ended, and cut 30-40% of the recently-flowered growth right out to stop it becoming too congested, leaving an open crown in which the new long shoots can receive good light. In wet times, perennials such as alchemilla and hardy geranium sprawl over their neighbours faster than ever. Cut them back with secateurs, or if you’re brave, pull them off by the handful, taking care not to uproot them. After 24 hours, you’ll hardly see they’ve been disturbed. Result. Keep dahlias heavily staked. Canes won’t do… little dahlias may look after themselves, but by the end of the season, tall ones will be ready to lurch or crash down in wind and rain. Pull off the remaining tops of oriental poppies (the hairy, perennial ones) and fill the
+
gap with bedding plants for the rest of the season. Plant gorgeous autumn-flowering nerine and colchicum; the latter in particular need a rich soil in part-shade…under trees or shrubs is perfect. The leaves of colchicum appear in spring after flowering and are strappy and unsightly, so plant where autumn flowering is visible but where their spring foliage is out of the way. Make sure the long growth wands on climbing roses are tied in or shortened before winds can rip them down, and watch for clematis montana eating its neighbours for breakfast. Disentangle, peel back and cut off the most wayward stems. More stems will follow, and you can keep doing the same until September without any loss of next spring’s flowers. And so, we come to watering. Unless you have a watering system (like meeeee) or a willing slave (unlike meeeee), there’s no way to escape this task. The display of flowering plants such as phlox will be greatly reduced if they’re allowed to wilt. In hot weather, water early in the morning/later in the evening to avoid rapid evaporation and scorched foliage: water droplets act like mirrors with the sun. In particular, water roots of Michaelmas daisies well. Raise the blades on the lawn mower in hot, dry weather, and summer-feed and water the lawn well. Finally, the best advice: don’t plant too much because you’ll be forever watering. And keep spare plants for hanging baskets: something always dies and upsets the balance, gaaaaaaaah. Most of all, enjoy, enjoy.

mole valley meeting report +
TUESDAY 13TH JUNE 2017
R
eport for Mole Valley WI meeting on Tuesday, 13th June. At our recent meeting Mole Valley members provided a lovely display of roses for entry into a competition, held annually, for the Rose Bowl. It was a close-run thing but was eventually won by Sue Wall, an enthusiastic garden club member, with an exquisite pink climber rose. Later in the evening, we welcomed Kate McBain, a development chef,
+
to give us a talk all about gluten and dairy intolerances which was very informative. Kate spoke about her earlier career which included, at one stage, teaching young offenders in prison (a close eye was kept on the use of knives!). We were then treated to a short cookery demonstration whilst being given tips on the use of various gluten-free and dairy-free products. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 11th July at 7.45 p.m. Visitors are always welcome.

Let’ s Rock Shrewsbury THE RETRO SHOW
I had a truly poptastic weekend in Shropshire recently co-hosting Let’s Rock Shrewsbury, the Retro Show with Pat Sharp. It’s a movable festival, rocking and roaming the land far and wide for fans of the 80s and lovers of some of the most entertaining stars who bring the music of yesteryear to the fore with some electronic wizardry and clever musicianship. Some of the outstanding musicians graced the stage, while 10,000 fans danced and sang along to the cascade of hits. Among the entertainers were Nick Heywood, once of Haircut 100, now an established solo star, who had the good grace not to play songs from his great new solo release, which is out in few weeks. His set in Shrewsbury consisted of his impressive repertoire of hits and yet more hits. The ever-popular Tony Hadley did a full hour of hits from his spell as lead vocalist with Spandau Ballet, as well as several cover versions which reminded us just what a treasure he’s become. Nick Kershaw was at first unrecognizable with his white goatee, but once he plugged in and strummed his way into Wouldn’t it be Good!, there was no mistaking that guitar sound of his. Jaki Graham was her usual foot-stomping self and Billy Ocean topped the bill with unforgettable dynamics and a brilliant back-up band. Other fine hit-makers included Altered Images, Heaven 17, The Real Thing and local faves, T Pau. I had a ball and hope you’ll be able to join the Retro show sometime over the next few months.

In the past month, there have been several serious IT -related issues which have impacted the NHS, county councils and British Airways with pretty devastating effects. The software attack that hit the NHS was a malware attack with WannaCry ransomware. The malware blocks your machine and encrypts your data, stating that you must pay a ransom to gain access to your data. This software is very effective as, generally, there is no removal process or way around it. You have only two options, recover your data from an earlier backup or pay the ransom. This malware attack is generally on machines using old versions of Microsoft Windows, such as Windows 95, 98, XP, ME, XP and Vista. These are all operating systems for which Microsoft has stopped issuing security updates and support, and they are vulnerable. If you have a computer using any of these operating systems, you should seriously consider upgrading to a version which has the security updates, such as Windows 7, 8 and 10. The backing up of your system can be done in a number

of ways, with the most popular being to the Cloud, as this is automatic and requires no user intervention. We have a consumer and small business support package called Total Care which includes Cloud backup. Further details can be found on http://www.tecres. co.uk/home-support Data Recovery Services We mentioned in our last update that this is the season for failed hard drives, and in conjunction with one of our recovery partners, we are now able to offer very good value, fixed-price data recovery. If you have suffered a drive or media failure, please get in touch, as we have a very compelling option Apple update Apple has recently announced that the new software updates planned for this autumn will only work with iPhone 6 and above and iPad Air and newer models. What does this mean for you if you have an older device? In short, you will not see any improvements or bug fixes, and you leave yourself vulnerable to the likes of the above-mentioned malware. Have an enjoyable summer.

Peugeot 3008 +
T
SUMMER REVIEW
hankfully, I have been stared at for reasons vastly different from when I was driving the freaky Post Office mail van lookalike, the bizarre offering by Citroen of the forgettable C3. And last time out in this column, I did reveal I would be reviewing the brand new Peugeot 3008. It is, thankfully, a top cat car…a PURRgeot…that got the cream and the award as Car of the Year in a respected prestige international motor magazine – all down to the brilliance and initiative of the admirable French company’s designers’ dash and inventiveness under pressure. The upshot, as welcome as can be, is a vastly improved second-generation 3008 that bears the significant hallmarks of improvement on its dull predecessor, and in the hotly contested SUV/Crossover market that is crucial to making it a real all-round treat for the buyers and, therefore, a surefire financial hit for the Gallic manufacturers. After all, style is said to be second nature to the French and here they have fully justified that reputation in the completely overshadowing of the 300’s now-gone older sibling SUV. I was mystified by the niggly nitpicking and trivial faultfinding of an irritating fellow reviewer who seemed to see more bad than good in the newcomer, which in my humble opinion has more pluses than minuses and seems to be the ideal contestant to set the pace in the SUV race. After my exasperating spell in the multi-coloured C3, it was a real joy to be seated in the refashioned 3008 on a trek to the Lake District with Trophy Wife, vast suitcases an’ all, under the gaze of amused and scoffing fellow motorists in their runof-the-mill cars. The 400-plus mile round trip, taking in motorways, alternately crowded and crawling and fast-moving, and then onto the twisty lanes around Coniston, was achieved

without a single moment of discomfort, anguish or regret and with a firm ride and safe feeling feedback. We arrived as fresh as can be with hardly a dent in my wallet…or TW’s purse…with the fuel flowing sparingly and returning a smooth and economical journey. Our traded thoughts were an agreement that the design team and engineers have done a superb job in turning out a nice looker with performance to please. And our upmarket lake view hotel car park was a fitting showcase for our upmarket transport. TW drove us home and she too echoed my appreciation of the willingness and response of the engine and the car’s solid and secure feel with its electronic grip traction control facility actioned. It is NOT a real off-roader in the rough riding, mountain-climbing 4x4 Range Rover sense, but the switch-on control smooths out the bumps on the lumpier lanes. Gadgetry? Yes. Aplenty. And completely uncomplicated, even for tech dunces like me. The upgraded and uprated Mark 2 offers a 12-inch instrument digital display feature and touchscreen, taking in sat-nav, rear parking sensor, climate control and a thorough infotainment system. The teeny-weeny steering wheel seems odd at first sight and initial grip, but it gives the driver an impression of fast and keen response and consequently boosts confidence that the car is heading the way you want it to go. And that’s my baseline thought on this near-perfect Peugeot innovation which mixes excitement and economy in a rare combination and is heading in the right direction in every sense. Specification: my try-out model was the SUV3008 GT, Blue HDi 1997 cc. Horsepower 180@3750rpm. Speed 131 mph. Acceleration 0-62 8.9secs. Fuel 58.9 mpg. Price: £33,155.

products. It's also good to leave the car behind and walk, cycle and use public transport as much as possible.
With holiday season underway it's worth bearing in mind that wherever you are there are ways of making your vacation more environmentally friendly. A top suggestion is to support the local economy, particularly shops and eateries that sell or serve sustainable and fair-traded goods and

NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
part from your home, your car is probably the most valuable thing you own, and yet, it’s also the one most at risk. Car crime is now a problem that affects us all, no matter where we live or work. Car thefts and thefts from cars make up almost a third of crimes reported to police. About one in four cars reported missing each year is never recovered but these statistics never take into account the inconvenience caused to you, the owner. If the car is not recovered, it can take a month or more before insurance claims are settled, not to mention the high costs involved if you have to hire a replacement car. Your frustration may not end there. If returned, your car may be badly damaged, in need of repair or beyond use. It’s only after the insurance company’s inspection that you can finally put your vehicle in for what could be expensive repairs. It all adds up to a huge amount of delay and inconvenience. Surrey Police is determined to reduce vehicle crime and you can help us achieve this by following the advice given below Car audio equipment and clothes - these are the most common items stolen from cars. But pretty much anything will get taken: CDs, tools, laptops, mobile phones, bags, briefcases, sunglasses and credit cards. The reason why things get taken is usually because they’re on view for all to see.
+
Remove the temptation to a would-be thief by leaving nothing on view. Even shopping bags, cigarettes and loose change can encourage a break-in. If you don’t require an item of property for your journey, leave it at home. Doors - lock them every time you leave your car, even if it’s only for a couple of minutes because a couple of minutes are all a thief needs. Ignition key - always take it out of the ignition when you leave your car, even when your car is in the garage and especially in a petrol station. Keep your keys out of sight when they are left in your home. CD players and radios - the latest security-coded equipment won’t work if someone tampers with it and disconnects it from the battery. Some car stereos or the face of them can easily be removed and taken out of the car. Documents - your registration document, MOT and insurance certificate could help a thief to sell your car. Keep them in a safe place at home and not in the car itself. Parking - when at home, the safest place to park is your garage if you have one. If not, choose a busy, well-lit area, as thieves don’t like being seen. And remember... thieves like older cars, too. In fact, to some extent thieves prefer them, especially so-called ‘joy riders’, as they don’t usually have sophisticated built-in security.
