HAPPY BIRTHDAY They say “Time flies when you’re having fun”, and the fact that M Thorne Consulting Limited (MTC) is celebrating its third business birthday this month proves the point. Set up in April 2011 by experienced HR professional Mara Thorne, MTC is the Bookhambased HR consultancy which specialises in supporting small and medium-sized businesses in Surrey with all their employment challenges. Mara remembers the early days, when work was scarce and clients hard to come by, as though they were yesterday. “It was such a milestone when I signed up my second client,” she reminisces. “He was recommended to me by my first client and I literally skipped across the office and gave him a big hug!” In fact, many of Mara’s clients have come on board as a result of referrals, which is a terrific vote of confidence in her services, but more recently, her online efforts have paid dividends too. “Before I set up the company, I had no idea what Search Engine Optimisation meant, and thought social media was something only teenagers used. But now, more and more clients are finding me online. It’s particularly nice to hear they like the videos on my website!” If you employ people or are thinking of doing so, MTC’s website is well worth a look. Mara is a prolific blogger and if you are wrestling with an employment-related problem of any sort, chances are you’ll find an article offering useful tips on how to tackle it. And if you’re new to managing people, her book “The Dirty Dozen of Business: Twelve
Management Mistakes (and how to avoid making them)” is packed with easy-to-read case studies pointing you in the right direction. You can download it to your Kindle, request a pdf from the website, or simply call and ask for a physical copy. In the three years since inception, MTC has helped a wide range of clients, from estate agencies to manufacturers, jewellers to security specialists, with diverse issues including recruitment, contracts of employment, misconduct, sickness absence, poor performance, redundancy and much more. In fact, the business has grown so strongly that MTC has now formed an alliance with an Associate Consultant, Sam Gold, who owns Gold HR Limited, based in Farnham. Mara and Sam provide cover for each other in times of heavy workload or when either of them is on holiday, thus providing clients with seamless access to HR advice and support whenever needed. “It’s amazing how much the business has changed in the last three years,” Mara muses. “Little did I imagine when I signed up my second client that I’d now be needing extra help to keep all the plates spinning! But I am thrilled with how well things are going. It’s hard work but great fun, and I’m loving every minute of it”. In these difficult economic times, it’s great to hear another Bookham business success story. Happy birthday, MTC! For help with any employment issue, check out MTC on: www.mthornehr.co.uk, telephone 01372 700139 or email mara@mthorneconsulting.co.uk

LONDON2 BRIGHTONCHALLENGE
Emma & Andrew Wetherell and Emma’s dad, Neil Cartman, have set themselves a mighty challenge! They intend to walk and run the 100km from London to Brighton to raise £1500 for a charity which not only saved Emma’s life, but also that of their daughter’s. Their challenge will take place on 24/25th May. When Emma was six weeks old, she was very poorly and had to be resuscitated by her grandfather when she stopped breathing. She was rushed into hospital in a critical condition and was then transferred to Gt. Ormond Street Hospital where she received life-saving surgery. Emma had a condition called pyloric stenosis. This causes a thickening of the pyloric muscle, which lies between the stomach and the
small intestine. This in turn causes the baby to projectile vomit high amounts of their milk, causing the baby to become undernourished and ill. Thirty years on, and Emma’s younger daughter was found to have the very same condition and was also referred to Gt Ormond Street Hospital, where she had the same life-saving operation at six weeks old. So I’m sure you can see why this family really wants to raise £1500, not only to say thank you to the hospital, but also to help other families who find themselves in a similar situation. Look Local wishes you all lots of luck and encourages our readers to help Emma, Andrew and Neil to achieve their goal!
You can make a donation by going onto this fundraising web site: -

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary. • A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can
typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

GARDENING MATTERS Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are in decline globally, and one of the main causes is the loss of flowers, especially in the countryside. Increasingly, gardeners are looking for ways to help bees and other insects by providing attractive flowers for them to feed on. To do this, they often use ‘pollinatorfriendly’ plant lists, but these lists are generally based on opinion/experience, rather than scientific research. Professor Francis Ratnieks and his Ph.D student, Mikhail Gaburzov, from the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects at Sussex University completed one of the first scientific studies to put the recommending of pollinator-friendly garden flowers onto a firmer scientific footing. Funded by the Body Shop Foundation, it involved counting flower-visiting insects repeatedly over two summers as they foraged on 32 popular summer-flowering garden plant varieties in a specially planted experimental garden on the university campus (each variety in two 1x1m beds). Plant varieties included 19 species and hybrids, both native and exotic to Britain, with particular focus on 13 varieties of lavender (Lavandula spp.), as it’s known to be attractive to bees, and also four dahlias. All the plants studied had to be popular garden plants, be easily available to buy and had to flower mainly or exclusively in July/August.
The key findings were: • Bees (87%) and hoverflies (9%) were the most frequent visitors, with butterflies and moths just 2% and all other insects also 2%. • There were clear differences in the mix of bee and insect types attracted by different varieties, indicating that careful plant choice can not only help insects in general, but also a range of insects. • Open dahlias attracted many bees, especially bumble bees, whereas pompom dahlias attracted few insects because the highly-bred flowers make it difficult for insects to reach the pollen and nectar. • Highly-bred varieties of lavender, including interesting colours, such as white or pink, or hybrid lavenders, proved very attractive to insects. The researchers recommend the following plants to gardeners: • Marjoram - the best all-rounder, attracting honey bees, bumble bees, other bees, hoverflies, butterflies. • Lavender and open-flowered dahlias - the best for bumble bees. • Borage - the best for honey bees. • Erysimum Bowles Mauve (hardy wallflower) - the best for butterflies. The least attractive flowering plant to insects was the pelargonium. Although this trial isn’t exhaustive – they looked at a small selection of the thousands of plants found in a typical garden centre – the study shows clearly that planting pollinatorfriendly flowers is a win-win solution to help bees. The plants attractive to bees are just as cheap, pretty and easy to grow as those that are less attractive. Helping insects in your garden is a no-brainer: plant the right flowers and they will zoom in.

APRIL RECIPE This recipe is a family favourite. My mother taught me to cook with this recipe, which was handed down by her grandmother. They were originally from Cornwall and this ham and egg pie is a traditional West Country dish. This pie is extremely economical to make (this size serves 6-8 for under £10). Raid the local deli counter and buy the widest mix of cooked meats possible. Depending on what you can find, the pie is never quite the same twice. I used a mix of hams, tongue, corned beef, roast chicken and a bit of smoked pancetta to boost the flavour. I also used the best quality eggs I could find. They have a wonderful dark, almost orange yolk, which enhances the look of the pie if you are clever enough to cut the eggs in half when serving. You can make it with shortcrust pastry or rough puff pastry (as I did here). If you go for shop-bought pastry, make sure it’s the all-butter variety, which is much nicer.

Ham and Egg Pie Ingredients
• 500g pastry (shortcrust or rough puff, see above) • 500g cooked ham and meats • 4 eggs beaten with 50ml full milk in a bowl or jug • A few snipped chives Seasoning • Another egg and pastry brush, for glazing • 22cm pie dish
Instructions • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Pre-heat the oven to 200C (fan)/220C. Put an oven tray in to preheat. This will improve the crust on the finished pie. Flour a work surface and rolling pin. Using half the pastry, roll out to a circle just wide enough to line the pie, including up the sides. Gently push the pastry thoroughly into the bottom corner and up the sides of the dish. Cut up the meats into bite-sized pieces and lay into the lined pie dish, leaving four small hollows for the eggs. Gently break an egg into one of the hollows in the meat, taking care not to break the yolk. Repeat with the other eggs. Season the milk & egg mix and add the chopped chives. Stir thoroughly. Gently pour over the meat to evenly distribute. Flour the work surface and rolling pin and roll out the remaining pastry. Gently cover the meat. Squeeze the top and bottom layer of pastry together. Make a couple of air vents in the top with the back of a cutlery knife and glaze with the beaten egg. Put the pie onto the pre-heated oven tray. Bake for 15 minutes then reduce the heat by 20C and cook for a further 25 minutes until golden. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Oakfield Reunion! Oakfield Junior School in Fetcham is celebrating its 50th anniversary year. The school, formerly known as Fetcham County School (and Fetcham Middle School) would like to invite all past pupils, staff and governors to drop in for a reunion day at the school on
Saturday 17th May, 11am – 4pm. Oakfield has grown into a flourishing school of around 260 pupils and is proudly looking back on the last 50 years, as well as looking forward to the next 50. The reunion will offer plenty of chance to reminisce over the sights, sounds (and smells!) of the school and hopefully to renew many past acquaintances. If you have a memory of the school that you would like to share, or would like to let others know that you are planning to attend the reunion, please email
cath_owens@oakfield.surrey.sch.uk, call Cath on 01372 374781 or visit www.facebook/oakfieldis50 and join the Oakfield Reunion Day event In the meantime, for more information of the day, please feel free to get in touch or go to

Leatherhead twinning with Triel-sur-Seine
This year, Leatherhead will celebrate its ten year twinning with Triel-sur-Seine, a delightful town beside the River Seine, not very far from Paris. The Association would be delighted to enrol new members and is looking in particular for members of the community from Leatherhead or any of the surrounding villages to host a French couple or individual during the forthcoming visit from May 5th – 8th 2014. An exciting, action-packed itinerary has been planned, which includes a visit to Windsor, a civic reception at The Mansion House in Leatherhead and a dinner-dance at Tyrrell’s Wood. We would love anyone interested to become involved. Your level of French is not a problem! If this venture interests you, please contact Christine Hearne by mail christinehearne04@gmail.com
Bike Ride in memory of a French fireman A group of 10 firefighters from Triel are proposing to cycle 355 kilometres along the “Green Avenue” from Triel to Leatherhead and on to London between Thursday 8 May and Sunday 11 May 2014. They will receive a warm welcome at the Fire Station in Leatherhead on the afternoon of Friday 4 April, to be greeted by Eddie Roberts, the Divisional Manager for the Fire Service, and members of Leatherhead’s Twinning Association, the Friends of Triel. We are also keen to involve the chairman of Mole Valley,
as the cyclists are bringing a trophy which they wish to present to either the Council or to the Leatherhead firemen themselves. The twinning association will also present a trophy to the French firemen in return. This bike ride is the latest in a series of challenges undertaken by the French firemen in memory of one of their young members, Benoit Boscariol, who died in 2012 at 22. If you would like to know more about the visit, contact Paula Hancock, The Chairman of the Friends of Triel on 07767 833427

Bookham Footpaths
Following the prolonged heavy rainfall, springs opened up to the south of Lower Road during early February, making the footway that runs along Lower Road impassable in three locations: at the west end of the Rec, just to the east of Manor House Lane and opposite The Vineries. Only at the last location was a partial solution easy to implement: at BRA’s request, drainage grips were dug across the raised verge in several places to release the water ponding on the footway into the carriageway gullies. At the first two locations, there was no easy solution, due to the large quantity of water coming from the springs. As a result, pedestrians, most of whom were students going to and from school, were having to walk in the road. The flooding at the Rec was considered so dangerous that in the week before half term, the Neighbourhood Police were out controlling traffic for half an hour morning and evening to get children across the flooded section. However, this was not a long-term solution. After much lateral thinking as to possible solutions to the problem areas, BRA proposed to ‘bypass’ the Lower Road and upgrade the footpaths to the south of the Rec - which was being used by a few students before half term but which was virtually impassable in a couple of locations - just to the west of the Rec towards Rectory Lane, and between All Saints’ Church and The Howard, where running water was crossing the path to some depth over long lengths in both sections. Elsewhere, the path was very muddy. So, on the Monday afternoon of half term, BRA walked the length of the footpath with
local contractor Arthur Elms to show him the problems and explain what was required. By that evening, Arthur had come back with a quote, part of which was for work in Effingham, and the next day, following urgent requests to SCC and MVDC, most of the required funding was secured and an order given to Arthur to carry out the work. By early Wednesday morning, plant was on site and work commenced from the Effingham end, despite a decision being awaited from Effingham Parish Council as to whether they would fund their part of the works. By Saturday, after only four long days, the work was completed to a very high standard, ready for the children to use when they went back to school on Monday morning. The works comprised the cutting of edge drainage channels, the placing of cross drains at the locations of greatest flows, and laying and compacting 150mm of bitumastic road planings at the worst locations. Elsewhere, muddy sections were cleaned down to the original limestone surface. What the project does show is that, properly motivated, localism does work. Looking forward to the next six months and the growing season, BRA will be submitting another bid to SCC for money from the Localism Fund which the Mole Valley District Council Local Committee administers, to enable them to carry out the vegetation control of village footpaths by local contract. Should anyone know of footpaths that are likely to need attention in the coming summer, please email Michael Agius on meagius@gmail. com and he can check whether or not they are already on the schedule.

Windows XP and Office 2003
RETIRES IN DAYS On April 8th 2014, Windows XP and Office 2003 ‘retires’. If you are a Windows XP or Office 2003 user, what will it mean for you? The simple answer is that you will no longer receive Microsoft updates, security fixes, assistance or support concerning Windows XP and Office 2003, but the copy of the software on your computer will continue to work: it will not suddenly turn off and cease to work.
Is that a big deal? On the surface, not really. However, because your XP computer will become a less secure device, some companies have stated that they will not allow Windows XP to connect to their secure websites. This could impact any website that has a shopping basket or secure sign, be it your bank, building society, ebay, PayPal, supermarket , Government/ tax office, this list goes on. Due to the lack of updates and increasing security risk, some commentators have stated it will become a hackers’ paradise, as they will be finding more ways to penetrate your system with little to stop them. The ramifications could be massive: you will leave yourself venerable to hackers and risks. If you have a machine which is 4 or more years old, we would urge you to replace it; if your machine is less than 4 years old, you can buy a replacement Windows 7 or Windows 8 which will provide you with the most up-to-date supported and secure product.
The cost of the new version operating system starts at £95.00 for Windows 7. If you are taking this opportunity to upgrade your system, we can provide you with a service to copy all your existing data, information, emails, music, photos, shortcuts, internet favourites and so on to a new machine. We can even send an engineer round to your premises with the new equipment and install and set up the system, making the transition as simple as possible. Should you not wish to embrace the latest Windows 8 software, we do have stocks of Windows 7 machines too.
This guide was written by Les Beer from TecRes, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. How can we help you? For further information, please call 01372-370300 or email sales@tecres.co.uk

MEDICAL MATTERS!! HAVE YOU PLANNED YOUR HOLIDAY YET OR THINKING ABOUT TAKING A GAP YEAR & BACK PACKING?
An important part of your planning should be considering travel health issues. Complex travel (such as back packing, travelling across several countries or a trip lasting more than one month), especially with an unplanned itinerary, may require several weeks of repeated appointments to ensure all vaccinations are complete. Some vaccinations are available on the NHS free of charge; however, others are not and can be very costly. Make sure you are given a written record of vaccinations for your future reference. Other equally important issues to consider include taking out comprehensive travel insurance, especially for longer trips. Water and food hygiene are crucial to ensure your health is maintained while away. If you are unsure of your water source, bottled water is essential - for drinking and for cleaning teeth. Also beware of ice cubes in drinks. For areas where malaria is a problem, stringent care to avoid mosquito bites is paramount. Malaria mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, so if out and about at these times, best to cover up with long sleeves and trousers. Take an insect repellent with you (usually better than buying locally) which contains up to 50% DEET. Malaria tablets may need to be started up to three weeks before travel, so again, factor this into your plans. These are not available on the NHS and usually there is a charge for a private prescription and a further charge when collecting the tablets from the pharmacy.
Happy holidays and keep safe!

BOOKHAM’S NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM:
BEYOND THE GREEN BELT REVIEW How the Neighbourhood Plan can help maintain what residents like about Bookham, while still planning for future development: • The Plan can include policies which development proposals will be required to meet • This may or may not include land in the current Green Belt, as that will now be decided by Mole Valley The policies in the Plan will focus on and be appropriate for Bookham. Bookham’s Neighbourhood Development Plan can: • pinpoint the known local infrastructure ‘pinch points’ in the neighbourhood, which should be taken into account when planning applications are put forward • suggest specific infrastructure projects that could be undertaken • plan for the types and tenure of homes needed in Bookham • create policies that guide the design and style of homes that are planned for • plan to enhance and provide improved links to open spaces and countryside • prioritise the types of commercial and retail units to be provided, should appropriate sites become available • include policies that help local businesses plan so as to increase footfall, improve parking • encourage the appropriate redevelopment of commercial properties as they become available. As well as gathering your views, evidence to support the Plan is being compiled and discussed. Once it is complete, a draft Plan will be produced and consulted on with the entire Bookham population. Everyone can have their say about the work of the Neighbourhood Forum, and those views will be taken into account before it is passed to Mole Valley for consideration and inspection. If it passes inspection, then it will be the subject of a referendum for the whole of Bookham to vote on.

BRABA is delighted that Patrick Gardner Estate Agent has been able to incorporate an ATM service with the relocation of their business into the unit vacated by HSBC in Bookham High Street. As a community we fought hard to persuade HSBC to reverse their decision to close the Bookham branch, but they were adamant that it would close. During a meeting of BRABA members it became obvious that our local economy and our resident’s convenience had been adversely affected by the closure. Following that meeting Patrick Gardner’s took the decision to explore the possibility of installing an ATM (Cash Machine). Our one remaining bank in the village, Lloyds, have done a great job as “the last man standing for which we are grateful , but I am sure they will also welcome the provision of a second cash machine in the village. Thank you and well done to Chris Yeomans and the team at Patrick Gardner Estate Agents. If you are a local business and are interested in joining our association, please email Michelle at braba12@gmail.com
