From the Editor

Welcome to our Festive Issue in Bookham! Not only that, but this month is our 10th Anniversary Issue! TEN WHOLE YEARS and we are still here! I just want to THANK YOU all so much for your support and interest over the years. It is a total pleasure to produce your local magazine and I hope you continue to find it a useful resource in 2016 and beyond. We’re only here because of you and for you, so again, thank you very much, readers and advertisers, local charities and organisations alike. The only downside is that I’m ten years older (but maybe wiser) than when we first met. Let’s just hope that love is blind ! Lots and lots in this special issue, reflecting as always what a fantastically interesting village we are privileged to live in, see here..... Late Night Shopping Evening coming up on Thursday 10th December. Be there or be square! The Christmas Charity Post information, well worth using for your local Christmas card delivery. I meet a local author, whose book is fantastic and he is a really nice guy too; our Look Local motoring man, Ted Macauley, has a great give away competition; a local resident receives a message from the Queen; information about the POSE Panto; the Lion’s Santa visits, times and days; a competition, and a real film all about ‘Bookham in the War’ is coming to a big screen near here in the New Year! Info on all within… I hope you enjoy.....

MUSIC MATTERS

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2016.

A FILM WHICH TELLS THE PART PLAYED BY VILLAGES IN BRITAIN DURING WORLD WAR 2 - INSPIRED BY THE BOOK ‘BOOKHAM IN WORLD WAR 2’

I

n 2013, Dr Farooq Beg, an international award-winning documentary film maker and a new arrival in Bookham, chanced upon the book Bookham in World War2 at the local Wishing Well shop on High Street. Fascinated by the book, Dr Beg joined hands with prominent members of the Leatherhead History Society and co-authors of the book, Michael Anderson and Roy Mellick, to produce a documentary to tell the untold story of the silent diligent villagers who backed our brave soldiers on the battlefront. In the words of a village writer, ‘us villagers were the backbone of the War’. With no budget but oodles of motivation and conviction, the threesome set about producing the documentary, with unimaginable support from individuals and numerous community groups from the area. The film has been produced to broadcast standards and is intended to be a vital part of the oral history of the area and a valuable asset for our future generation through schools, colleges and libraries. We are pleased to inform you that the one hour film ‘We also Served’ is now complete and waiting for a red carpet preview showing at Leatherhead Cinema on 16 January 2016 at 7.00 pm.

We hope that you will join us at this first-ever red carpet film event with your family and friends. As we mentioned earlier, the project started on a zero budget and has relied on the goodwill of numerous individuals and organizations. Nevertheless, there are costs that need to be covered to keep the process of documenting local history alive and we appeal to your generosity to help us take this further. I have created an eventbrite event (link below) where you can go and book your seats. There is an option to donate when getting your tickets. We will be taking donations both through the site as well as on the day. We will also be creating a kick-starter for the film in the coming days. This will serve as a place where anyone interested in the film can pledge to certain tiers to get rewards: for example, one would be getting a DVD of the film. For all contact information, we can be reached on the email: ww2wealsoserved@gmail.com There is also a Facebook page for the film. Currently, Facebook is reviewing the name change process which should take 2-3 days, so the page name would change to ‘We also served’. https://www.facebook.com/Bookhamfilm/timeline We can also be reached on the number: 07896 207792 | 07944 957258

A DOG IS FOR LIFE...

...not just for Christmas.

Coined by the Dogs Trust back in the 1970s, this simple but effective slogan says it all. And now December is upon us, thoughts are turning to the perfect Christmas present. A dog, like a child, is a huge long-term responsibility. While cuddling a cute puppy on Christmas Day sounds wonderful, they will still need the same amount of love, care and attention when the holidays are over. So, if you’re thinking of spending this Christmas with a new canine chum, please consider the following before taking the plunge: Food: Dogs must have a well-balanced doggy (not human) diet for optimum health, along with constant access to fresh clean water. Friends: Dogs are sociable animals and should have the opportunity to spend time with other sociable dogs being just, well, dogs! Family: As owners, you become their ‘parents’, which means allowing them to fit into your home life as one of the family, with a loving and secure environment and their own doggy bed to retire to. You’ll also need to guide and train them. Fun: Regular exercise is an absolute must. Once or twice a day at a minimum, whatever the weather… Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

Home from home dog boarding available. Only one or two dogs taken at a time, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Now in his 75th year, it’s impressive to note that a man once regarded as an unofficial ambassador for his generation is still rockin’ and rollin’ ‘Just‘Like A Rolling Stone’. Bob Dylan is an undisputed heavyweight to the ‘counter culture’ generation and will forever be regarded as a prime influence on anyone in the 60s who picked up a guitar and plectrum and then discovered just how powerful a message can be when expressed by a latter-day troubadour. He was also the one who courted huge controversy at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall and London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1965 by going ‘electric’, much to the welldocumented annoyance of his army of folk music purists who felt he had committed a kind of treason by embracing amplified music. Oh the shock and the horror when he first plugged in, but upon hearing the opening strains of ‘Like A Rolling Stone’, possibly the greatest pop song ever written, or the Jimi Hendrix version of ‘All Along The Watchtower’, the objectors to his new direction were eventually silenced and Bob was right all along. Timeless classics like ‘Masters Of War’, ‘Blowin In The Wind, ‘A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall and ‘The Times They Are A Changing’ all became global anthems. Dylan has recorded no less than 36 studio albums and has written over 100 books, including his own first volume of his amazing memoirs, entitled Chronicles. It’s an essential read, not just by his fans but by anyone who cares about the development of rock n’ pop from its beginnings. And now, just when you thought you’d seen and heard everything about the great man, along comes a terrific new collection of previously unseen black and white photgraphs entitled ‘Bob Dylan NYC 1961 – 1964’. The pictures were taken long before Dylan became a household name and convey the atmosphere of the times and the natural charisma of the man. You can’t help but wonder how life might have been for Bob before his destiny in music was sealed and just how did a farm boy from rural Minnesota became such an essential figure in the annals of pop. This latest venture is published by Rizzoli International Publications at £22.50.

eorge Kirby lives in Bookham and celebrated his 100th Birthday in early November. Over 50 of his friends and family helped him to celebrate with a wonderful party at La Familia in Hampton Hill, near to where his daughter Gillian lives. To mark the occasion, the mayor of Richmond attended and kindly presented him with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. George was born in 1915 in Edmonton, London, obviously in rather more austere times. He was one of 11 children. He lost many of his family during the Second World War and also to the TB epidemic at the time. Tragically, he lost his mother and father when he was quite young, but the children all cared for each other. There was no such thing as social services in 1915. Sadly too, all his siblings have now passed away. He met his wife Eileen at a dance before the war and they soon married and had two children, Gillian and Pauline. In 1941, he was conscripted and became a physical training instructor in the RAF, based in the UK for 3 years. He was then promoted to sergeant and posted to the Far East for 2 years, far away from his family. He was attached to the Army and Air Force and was involved with psychological warfare, surrounding the dropping of propaganda leaflets on Japanese Territories from about 1942 to 1946. He received the Burma Star for his time in the Far East, serving under Lord Mountbatten. That was the only time he left his family; George & Eileen were married for 75 years. Very sadly, Eileen passed away two years ago. Of course, this was a huge wrench and very sad after so many wonderful years together, and George misses her very much. His daughter Gillian said ‘Dad was a truly marvellous husband to our mum; he cared for her so well in her last years, right to the end of her life, in fact. He has also been a fantastic father, and actually still is at 100 years old! His positive approach to life is a great example to us all, overcoming all life’s challenges and he never gives up hope.’ Gillian believes that the secret to her dad’s longevity is basically ‘No special diets or drinks, good homemade cooking, enjoying a glass of wine and of course, always maintaining a good sense of humour.’ By all accounts, the party was wonderful and enjoyed very much by all who attended. A little birdie told me that George even did a tap dance for everyone before cutting his cake! What an incredible man! George was also delighted to receive a lovely birthday card from the Queen. What a wonderful celebration for an amazing man!

A FAST PACED

DEBUT NOVEL FROM A FORMER CITY BROKER

AND A FRESH NEW VOICE IN THE WORLD OF CRIME FICTION!

F

or a while, local author CT Sullivan has been fascinated by the phrase ‘reasonable force’ Over the years, there have been several high profile cases where home owners have defended their own property and their families from unwanted intruders, only then to find that in the eyes of the law, they are themselves in the wrong! It is a complicated area which so easily could affect the most law-abiding citizen. This great new book visits this exact scenario… I started the book last weekend and couldn’t put it down. It really is a captivating read. I asked the author how he went about putting a book like this together. I wondered if he had the whole story line worked out in his head before he started to write? ‘To a certain degree, I had a basic plan and the plot, but as you write, the story evolves, as do the characters.’ Are any of the characters within the book based on real people? ‘Yes, some are, but again, they also develop as the story moves along.’ It takes a long time from concept to published book and I can only imagine the hours of work which must go into producing a book such as this.

I really enjoyed the style of writing and the story is, as I said, totally captivating. If you are a member of a book club, this book really should go on your list; it is meticulously researched and very thought-provoding, the perfect combination for a good discussion. A tale about ordinary people who find themselves in an extraordinary situation. Before turning his hand to writing, the author spent twenty five years in the City as a foreign exchange broker, but since then has had a whole variety of very different jobs; these include driving a lorry, landscape gardening, a singer in pubs, a film extra and musical comedy entertainer, giving him ample time to hone his craft as an author! As you can imagine, he is a very interesting chap, and I’m sure his eclectic career path has given him a wide range of life experiences to draw from in his writing. I look forward to reading more from this man. Published by Pegasus Elliot Mackenzie, it is available from Barton’s Book Shop in Leatherhead, Waterstone’s Book Shop in Guildford and, of course, amazon.co.uk on line. It really would make a fantastic Christmas gift for almost anyone who enjoys a good book. Thank you very much, CT Sullivan.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, dependent on the level of supervision necessary.

• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

P

OSE is a local drama group which has been based in Bookham since it was formed in 1973 by Sylvia Denning, a local drama enthusiast. The objective of the group was to allow anyone with an interest in drama, regardless of experience or ability, to take part in productions – something which the current members continue to uphold 42 years later. The first full length panto produced by the group was Mother Goose in 1976 and we are pleased to announce that as a celebration of our 40th pantomime season, we will be revisiting this title for 2016 with Ben Crocker’s version of Mother Goose. Mother Goose lives happily in a small Scandinavian village – in Scandinavia, of course! – with her daughter Freya and Heidi, their goose. Unfortunately, there isn’t much money to be made from their market stall and Mother Goose is behind on her rent. Her landlord, Baron Von Rumpensmakka, threatens to take Heidi and serve her up as Christmas dinner. However, Aurora

intervenes and gives Heidi the power to lay golden eggs – Mother Goose is now rich! But there is something she wants more than wealth – beauty. In order to get it, she falls in with the wicked troll Smorg and is tricked into signing Heidi over to him. Together with Freya and the Baron’s nephew Sven, the trio set off to rescue Heidi from the Magic Mountain, spending a night along the way in a haunted hunting cabin and meeting the Grand High Snow Goose and his snowmen army. Mother Goose is the perfect family panto and is at The Old Barn Hall on Fridays 22nd & 29th January 2016 at 7.45pm, Saturdays 23rd & 30th January 2016 at 2.30pm & 6.30pm. Tickets priced at £8.00 adults and £7.00 children/ seniors are available from the Box Office on 01372 454001 or 01372 458254, and from John Wadsworth Estate Agents in Church Road, Bookham. ell, here we are at Christmas… or nearly, urrrrrk, scary thought. No idea where the last year went, but anyway… green and brown are not terribly familiar in terms of flower colours, but they frequently appear when describing the other parts of plants, and so it’s important to look beyond the flowers when wondering about the colour descriptions on nursery labels.

There is a whole host of words beginning with virwhich describe the various shades of green, but there are few green flowers, although anything carrying the name viridifloris will be exactly that: green-flowered. I have in my garden a Helleborus viridis, a hellebore whose flowers are indeed a very pale green. Of course, green often refers to the leaves, and evergreens may well have the specific name sempervirens, meaning ‘always green’, eg Buxus sempervirens, the box tree. Another name that is frequently seen is glaucus, which is more of a sea-green, a green overlaid with a bluish or greyish touch. One of the best-known plants with this in its name is Festuca glauca, a very attractive ornamental grass with striking, steely blue-green foliage, which also produces bluish-green flower spikes in summer. Another is Rosa glauca, a shrub rose whose flowers are cerise-pink, but whose most distinctive feature is its leaves, a beautiful blue-green. Brown may not be a colour one would think of associating with many flowers, but it is surprising how many there are, especially if you consider that orange turns frequently to brown, as with rudbeckias. Anything with ferrugineus in its name will be a rusty

brown in colour. It comes from the Latin ‘ferrum’, meaning iron (and those of you who have some French will recognise the word ‘fer’ from this). There are two familiar plants which bear this name. With Digitalis ferruginea, the rusty foxglove, it is referring to the flowers, which are a dark yellowy-brown, and with Rhododendron ferrugineum, it is the underside of the leaves which are rusty-coloured, although the flowers are deep pink. This latter is a good example of why you need to look at parts of the plant other than the flowers when considering the colour description. Another word to describe a shade of brown is fuscus, which means brown/tawny, and Eremurus fuscus, a plant native to Kazakhstan and Pakistan, has pale yellow flowers with brown tips, rather like the colour of a lion’s mane. There is also brunneus, simply meaning brown, but this is not common, although there is Restio brunneus, a grass with brown strands and native to South Africa. And so we come to the end of the names of various colours in Latin, and all that is left for me to do is to wish you all a very happy Christmas and love, joy, peace for the New Year….when it will be the words for shape in Latin, huzzaaaaahhhh…

he six-week consultation on the Draft Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) for Bookham started on 12th June and finished on 24th July 2015. Thank you to everyone who responded – there were over 120 comments sent in via the website, email and in writing for the Forum to collate, analyse and respond to. The consultation was promoted by email, website, Twitter, Facebook, Streetlife, the Bookham Village website, press coverage in the Leatherhead Advertiser, posters in the High Street area and at the Library. The Forum had a stand at Village Day on 12th June 2015 and promoted and held a Community Event at the Barn Hall on Saturday 18th July 2015, where presentations were given, information boards were on view and comment forms were provided. The feedback received was very welcome, and the Forum was delighted that so many local residents took the time to read the Draft Plan and contribute their views. During August and September, a sub-group of Forum members worked on the comments and tailored the

Draft Plan accordingly. At the Forum meeting held on Saturday 17th October 2015, the Forum reviewed the resulting Draft Plan and voted on the proposed changes. Bookham Vanguard is planning to publish a full list and analysis of all the comments on the website in due course. After the meeting on 17th October, the Forum will formally agree by email that the Plan is complete. The Finalised Plan will then be handed to Mole Valley Planning Authority. Mole Valley will then start a further consultation on the Plan, so that the whole community can have another chance to comment. Please look out for publicity advertising the MVDC consultation and, if you can, come along to the Community Event/s that Mole Valley will hold to invite your comments. hristmas with the BRA could be a lot more fun than you would imagine. Opening all those parcels on Christmas morning is a lot more enjoyable than opening letters from all the utility companies telling us that their charges are going up. Relaxing by the log fire after listening to the Queen’s speech is also a pleasant change from venturing out in the snow to put up notices on one of our five notice boards. Even watching endless repeats on television is better than having to set out in bitter cold wet weather to investigate

a flooded part of the village. But, please don’t get the wrong impression! We at the BRA are a dedicated team of volunteers who really do enjoy taking on the important tasks that keep both Great and Little Bookham as we like it today. If you are in any doubt about how much the BRA contributes to village life, here are just a few local issues that are monitored and dealt with on a regular basis: Planning; Highways; Infrastructure; Trees; Environment; Christmas lights; Hanging baskets; Young people; Education; Cycling; Consultation; Health; Transport; Associated groups; and Communications.

A CHRISTMAS LET TER by Penny Clarke Can’t believe Christmas has come once again. Keep saying we’ll meet, but when, oh when? Now, what has happened since this time last year? Can’t think of a thing, but never you fear, We go on as before as the seasons pass by – ‘Yes, but doing what?’ I hear you cry. Well, in the New Year we made resolutions And decided to alter our lives, but solutions Could not be agreed, so filled up our time By just travelling down the very same line As the previous year, so I think it is better I send you a copy of last Christmas’s letter. But one thing is sure, I know you’ll agree We really must meet, but we’ll just have to see… Till next year, love from Me.

CHRISTMAS ILLUMINATION by Chris Leonard The dying sun this wintry afternoon splashes cold stone purple, green, blue, orange. Impure light, traversing dust and coloured glass moves, dyes, almost lives – transforms this ancient chapel beyond belief. Transfixed, we watch till, for a moment, we too are purpled, gilded. Illuminate!

CHRISTMAS EVE by Penny Clarke We’ve arrived and I thought I’d tire But now they have settled in the byre I can look back on the journey made And take some pride in the baby laid In the manger, cosy and warm, Swaddled and safe, away from harm. I can stand here and look at the star, For I am the donkey that brought them this far.

Sheep on Polesden slopes shelter as night completes winter-long shadows. By other valleys, crags, shores, not so, for sheep, child, anyone… As frost sparkles bare twigs beautiful and glitter baubles crackers with laughter, remember quake, war, refugee, cold shepherds at a barely-sheltered birth... Grumbles melt, grateful. Grace to give? By Chris Leonard

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW MINI-CO OPER FIVE D O OR

The Beatles had one each. And Hollywood movie star & West End producer Kevin Spacy forked out nearly £100,000 for the last one of its class ever built. Not only that, there are 470 clubs in its name in the UK & 260 worldwide. So, what is it? The Mini. That’s what. And you’ve only got to be commuting from Stoke D’Abernon station to see them in their iconic ranks glistening petitely in the neighbouring car showroom. It is amazing that from a sketch by imaginative dreamer Sir Alec Issigonis, pencilled on a napkin in a Swiss cafe, Mini mania has swamped the globe, with more than three million sold since BMW, the fathers of autmotive efficiency & finesse, adopted the brand in 2001. From its humble beginnings, with its UK HQ in Longbridge & Cowley in the Midlands, it is now manufactured in Australia, Spain, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Uruguay, Venezuela & Yugoslavia, with other countries jostling to cash in on its popularity. I have to confess I was not really a fan until I gave one a trial run or two. I was too wrapped up in my own treasured Fiat 500’s enchanting manners & style

& price to contemplate allowing a sort of rival to grab my attention. We are fortunate that Surrey, with its hills, lanes, motorways & townships, abounds with terrain varyingly suitable for a thorough once-over of a car on our wish-list. The lightweight motor propels the car into the tightest turns & bends with a quality of grip that enhances a feeling and confidence of safety-on-thego, & all with the sort of throaty engine sound that is music to any fanatic’s ears. With the new five-door option with a stretch to the bodywork, there is ample legroom in the back, with a 278-litre boot that certainly took me by surprise, & while it falls well short of bigger car style & comfort, it is at a practical level. My feeling is that the latest Mini hatch, the five-door offering, is at the top end price of £23,050, a good few quid or two more than I am prepared to pay, confessed skinflint that I am. One thing in its favour, despite its price tag, & though there are vast legions of them, they resist depreciation. So in that sense, they eke out as fairly cheap over a time. A new layer of super-smooth engines fail to heave the Mini to the top of

its class, economy-wise - or give it the lowest CO2 emissions - but in the balance between performance & economy, they are pretty formidable. And, boy, does it handle terrifically smartly, as evidenced by its starring role alongside Michael Caine in “The Italian Job” - the Turin sewers chase by the way filmed in Coventry. The diesel versions, I’m told, are not nearly so quick & nippy - but they still revel in BMW-inspired refinement and are hugely economical. A problem is that if you are hooked on options, extras such as navigation or adjustable dampers or anything else to add an edge of sophistication, you can end up with an eye-wateringly expensive final bill for your fancies. I have to say, looks-wise, the long front nose is a wee bit droopy....or am I being too sniffy? Incidentally, I have a great prize to give away - forty-quids-worth of a Mini Manual telling you how to restore, overhaul & perform all sorts of tasks to give your Mini back its zest. Specification: My preferred Mini-Cooper Five door. Engine 2-litre. BHP 136. Top speed 129mph.0-60 in 8.2 secs. MPG 60.1.Price £16.085.

Why pay for something we already have? We should not. But a modest household payment - say 75p a week for a band D property - will generate over £200,000 each year to be spent wholly in Bookham. This will provide extra benefits for Bookham now & in future. What extra benefits? First, it would have the authority of a democratically elected body, & residents would be able to demand that it provide & carry out certain services or projects. Second, a Village Council, unlike any other body, would have extra revenue, for example from the new developer-funded Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). How does BEAM relate to the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP)? There is no direct relationship. But if Bookham residents support the NDP in a referendum, & if we had a Village Council, then 25% of CIL - estimated at £60,000 a year - would go straight to the Council to be spent in Bookham. How might a Council affect our valuable volunteer base? Positively. Other good Councils support their community volunteer organisations by providing grants, & administrative & other support. Our Village Council would do as well, if not better! Would it listen? The Village Council’s Statement of Intent would demand that it actively, continuously & professionally seek community opinions. It would have the funds to do so.

I

L

AN S W E R E D

BEAM proposes that, at an Annual Public Meeting, the Council present plans setting out residents’ priorities for the next three years. That meeting would formally agree final plans & associated costs. Further, the Council would report on its achievements against the previous year’s plan. Would it be accountable? By its nature, a Village Council is accountable. It would be properly elected, open & transparent. Meetings would be open to all, including the press. Full minutes & accounts would be published. Every candidate for Councillor must declare any party, business or commercial interests. Would it be political? A Village Council should be resolutely non-party political. Other good Councils publish a formal Statement of Intent to say this. Residents should approve such a statement for Bookham. Why have another layer of bureaucracy? What does this really mean? If it means having power to take decisions in Bookham, that must be beneficial. It will reduce the need to queue and lobby for funding & decisions by district or county. We will have resources to decide and act for ourselves. If anything it will cut out some bureaucracy with which we currently have to deal. More questions? Go to www.beamforbookham.uk where you will find more answers, and whilst there, please sign the petition in support of a Village Council. Or contact info@ beamforbookham.uk for more information.

he safety and security of ourselves and our homes should be a year round concern but, around Christmas, New Year and the Festive Season in general, many of us are out and about - travelling to and from events, parties and visiting friends and family. This can also mean that we are leaving our homes unoccupied for periods of time. In terms of home security, please remember to consider that opportunist burglars will look for premises where access is the easiest and where it appears that there may be something valuable to steal. Around Christmas, many of us buy presents for our families and friends. Please consider how they are stored in your home and try not to make it too obvious that there are “rich pickings” to be had. No one would suggest that you cannot decorate your home as you please, and around Christmas time, many people like to put presents around a tree, often in full display from a front window. Please consider making sure that access to your home is protected with suitable locks on doors and windows. If you have an alarm system, please use it. Putting some downstairs lights to come on with a timer switch can be a good idea. We do not recommend having a landing light come on with the ground floor in darkness as this does not convince anyone that the premises is occupied. A low level hall light on a timer would be a much better option. Once presents are unwrapped, consider how you dispose of wrapping and packaging of expensive items.

Leaving them outside for the next collection can show a potential burglar that there is something inside the house worth taking. When out and about, everyone should also consider the serious issue of drinking alcohol and driving. Surrey Police officers enforce the “drink-drive” law every day. We are aware, however, that this time of year can present increased problems and our officers will be targeting those who are irresponsible enough to drink and drive, not only putting their own lives at risk but also the lives of their passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Although there is a “legal limit” of alcohol for driving in the UK, it is well recognised that any amount in your body when you drive will affect your ability to react. Other factors, such as tiredness, medications and stress can also slow down your reaction times. Mix any of these factors with alcohol and you could be under the influence of a potentially lethal cocktail. It is for these reasons that we want to highlight the vital importance of protecting yourself and others at this time of year by planning alternative and safe ways of getting around if you are planning to have a drink. Consider using public transport, booking a taxi or asking a non-drinking friend or relative to drive or, at least, collect you. You can always offer to return the favour! Surrey Police officers have a duty of care to enforce the law and to protect the public ,and part of this is to take robust action against anyone found to be driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

TRANSITIONBOOKHAM Working to make our village more planet-friendly As usual we're taking a break in December and will resume our open meetings on Wednesday 20th January when we'll be reviewing 2015 and taking a fresh look at our activities to consider how best to use our resources in 2016. If you've been thinking about getting involved in what we do please do come along. The meeting is at the St Nicolas Pastoral Centre from 7.30pm-9.15pm (entrance on Church Road between Cova and Heads Up), free entry.

We'll be supporting Bookham's late-night shopping event on Thursday 10th December. As well as supporting your local shops here are a few more suggestions for having a “greener” Christmas: consider giving experiences rather than things; avoid over-packaged items; and buy cards, wrap and gifts from charities that support the environment. Check our website for more ideas. Wishing you a happy festive season!
