Happy birthday to us Happy birthday to us Happy birthday, dear Look Local Happy birthday to us! Eleven years old and still looking as fresh as a daisy, thanks to our wonderful Look Local designer, Kirsty Hamilton! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal readers and advertisers who continue to support and hopefully enjoy Look Local. And a special thank you must go to my wonderful Look Local team who continue to support me on an ‘over & above’ basis, you know who you are! X We look forward to bringing you community information and local services again next year. In fact, here’s to the next eleven, I say! ‘It’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas’ in Bookham! Christmas lights are appearing, and the heart-warming sound of Christmas carols can be heard ringing around the village from time to time. Heatwave or anow is the burning question, of course, as the warmest year on record comes to a close. My plan to get ahead with my Christmas shopping has worked well, and I’ll soon be ready for the big day. Normally, I haven’t even started by this time, but I really wanted to avoid my normal last minute panics. Just got to get down to some serious wrapping now and I must remember to order my turkey too! Good luck with your own preparations and do remember to support our wonderful local businesses who offer a fantastic selection of goodies. With that in mind, why not pop along to the late night shopping evening on 8th December? The action kicks off at 6pm. This is a great coming together of local folk and the village will be buzzing I’m sure, hope to see you there! This festive issue of Look Local will take us through until the end of January, when we look forward to launching into 2017 for another busy year in Bookham. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas & a happy and healthy New Year. Until next time, take care.

THE OLD CROWN
T
he restaurant at The Old Crown in Central Bookham has recently had a very tasteful make over. I am delighted to report that it is now up and running with new staff and a fabulous new chef. Reservations are being taken for the festive season and beyond. Now in the safe hands of The Crown’s owners, Debbie and Darren Ketley (who also own and run Brackenbury’s in the High Street), the restaurant is going from strength to strength. I went along last week with my son to sample the menu and take a look around. As you can see from
our photographs, the interior is looking better than ever, providing a relaxed and friendly local venue for diners. The open fires and attention to detail make a very pleasing combination, and we enjoyed a glass of wine and a Coke respectively as we perused the menu. The cosy atmosphere was very welcome when we visited on a cold November evening. There are plenty of tempting options and specials too. I chose the Wild Mushroom & Chicken Pate, followed by Slow Braised Lamb Shank with Red Wine and Rosemary Jus. This was served with creamy mash, Chantenay carrots and fine beans. My son Rory was delighted to have his favourite starter, Deep Fried
1 HIGH STREET, BOOKHAM, SURREY KT23 4AA 01372 458119
Calamari with Tartare Sauce, and followed this with a home made 8oz Beef Burger which was topped with melted Cheddar cheese & crispy bacon, and chunky chips on the side! The service was great, friendly and helpful staff who left us to enjoy our meal, but also made sure we had everything we needed. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was well cooked and nicely presented and it tasted delicious too! The pate starter I had was very tasty and the slow cooked lamb just melted in my mouth. Rory’s clean plates provided good evidence of his approval too! We were comfortably full after our main courses, but decided that it was not worth the
risk of offending our hosts by refusing a pudding ;-) Home-made Lemon Cheese Cake and a selection of ice creams were our two choices and these provided a wonderful end to a very enjoyable meal. Coffee to finish and we left feeling very satisfied! Great menus, well-cooked food, friendly staff and all in very easy reach too! A great local venue, where the meat and veg are sourced locally, what more could we ask? Thank you very much, Debbie and Darren, we had a really enjoyable evening. Look Local gives The Old Crown Restaurant the thumbs up! Booking your table is recommended.

ASK BRUCE:
TELLY ADDICTS
This month, reader Jan Harding explains that her dog enjoys watching TV, especially wildlife or animal programmes, and asks how well can he see it and can dogs only see in black and white? Jan’s dog is not alone, as many dogs love the telly! Today’s modern televisions are much clearer than those from the past, as they produce more frames per second. Decades ago, a dog watching TV would have seen a series of flashing images, but the picture will be almost as clear as if they were seeing it for real. This is why a dog may bark or show interest if they see another animal on TV. In fact, some dogs have even been known to look behind the TV to see where the animal has gone! It has been proven that dogs can actually see in colour, although their range is more limited compared to ours. Colour vision comes from cone cells in the eyes. Dogs have two cells, but humans have three. So a dog’s colour range is largely yellow and blue, whereas ours is the full spectrum. How a dog behaves in front of the television also stems from their personality. For example, an outgoing terrier is more likely to bark at another dog on the screen than a chilled Golden Retriever. I once looked after a terrier that loved the Discovery Channel and barked furiously whenever other animals appeared! Pantomime
Jack and the Beanstalk is at The Old Barn Hall on Fridays 20th & 27th January 2017 at 7.45pm and Saturdays 21st & 28th January 2017 at 2.30pm and 6.30pm. Tickets: £8.00 Adults | Seniors & Children £7.00 | Box office 01372 454001 or 01372 458254
OSE is a Bookham-based drama group who have performed a pantomime at The Old Barn Hall for the many years – this year’s pantomime, Mother Goose, was the group’s 40th full-length panto. We continue to stick with the traditional family pantomime format, suitable for everyone. This year is no exception and we will be presenting ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ by Peter Denyer. The land of Merrydale is being tormented by the Giant Blunderbore – if they cross him, the villagers soon find their houses crushed and their crops destroyed, so they agree to his every demand. The one villager not afraid of the Giant is Jack Trot. He lives with his mother, Dame Trot, and, along with Jack’s brother Billy, they run the Merrydale Milk Company. The Trots are behind with their rent and when King Maurice calls to collect so he can pay the Giant, they are taken off to work in The Royal Dairy to pay off their debts. The Giant’s henchman, Fleshcreep, wrecks the dairy and The King decrees that Daisy the cow must be sold to

pay for the damage. Jack is tricked into selling the cow to Fleshcreep, and the bag of gold turns into a bag of beans which are thrown out. When Jack discovers that the beans have grown into a huge beanstalk, he decides to climb it to rescue Jill, the king’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by Fleshcreep, and to restore the treasures that the Giant has taken from the King. So come along to boo Fleshcreep and the Giant and to cheer Jack along in his heroic adventures - it really is fun for all the family. Jack and the Beanstalk is at The Old Barn Hall on Fridays 20th & 27th January 2017 at 7.45pm and Saturdays 21st & 28th January 2017 at 2.30pm and 6.30pm. Tickets are priced at £8.00 for adults, £7.00 for seniors & children and are available from the Box Office on 01372 454001 or 01372 458254 and from John Wadsworth Estate Agents in Church Road, Bookham. Group rates are available for parties of 10 and party bags can be arranged for birthday groups.

Pets and children in particular can be terrified by fireworks - and if we know ahead of time when an event is planned, we can take evasive action. Please let us know when your firework event is planned and we’ll add it to the site. Public events will be publicised for free. Tec Res Christmas
Gift Ideas.. .
This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.
With Christmas rapidly approaching, we thought it may be useful to highlight some of the items that will be featuring under the Christmas tree this year. Custom-built PCs are immensely popular, as they provide exactly the size, shape, specification and power required, built from the highest quality components available at the most advantage prices. Please come and discuss your needs with us. Tablets - there is an ever-increasing number of 7-10” tablets on the market. The Apple iPads are clear market leaders of the premium product/premium price area. We also have Android tablets from £90.00 and Windows tablets starting at £135.00. The Windows tablets run the full Windows 10 edition, making them ideal for all members of the family. Computer Upgrades Solid State Hard Drive (SSD) is the upgrade your computer has been waiting for. Due to dramatic price cuts in the cost of SSDs, now is a great time to upgrade. Having an SSD in your machine will speed up the loading and running performance hugely: we have just upgraded a machine which was taking 4.5 minutes to boot, but with the SSD installed, it now boots in seconds. Costs start from £45.00 and we can install and copy all your data across if required. Graphics cards make the perfect gift,. They are easy
to fit and the benefit to the users can be huge, making graphics and games run much more smoothly. With prices ranging from £40 to many hundreds of pounds, we are happy to advise on your needs. Smart Home - turn your home Smart. With easy-touse and flexible remote connection devices, you can control your heating system, lighting control, domestic appliances and even CCTV and security monitoring. As the items all speak a “common language”, you can build your kit bit by bit and mix different devices to create the optimum solution. Gamers mice, mats and keyboards - yes, we know it sounds odd, but we have a selection of high performing mice, keyboards and mouse mats specifically for the gamers out there. They are fully adjustable, with some keyboards being illuminated - it could be the answer to that present dilemma. Total Care - allow us to look after your computer fully. We will protect it from viruses and malware, back up its data to our cloud and provide unlimited remote and workshop support for just £120 + VAT per year Notebooks - with machines starting from £170, we have a solution to fit every budget and need... small machines, gamers machines, ultra books, Windows 7, Windows 10 and Macs, even previously used machines.

DISCOVERY
Ted Macauley test drives the Land Rover Discovery, and lets us know what it has to offer....

T
he welcome news that fines and punishments for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving are to be upped to £200 with a six points penalty, still falls well short of a legal hit serious enough to put a stop to the life-threatening stupidity, at least to my mind and many others,. And here I speak from experience, after a narrow…very narrow…escape when a woman, quite clearly steering one-handed and animatedly blabbing on her mobile, recklessly jumped the traffic lights into Esher’s high street in her BMW as I moved, luckily slowly, on green. She missed me by fractions and only because I spotted her at the last minute and braked to a standstill. How I was not walloped was little short of a miracle. And she didn’t even glance in my direction. Mind you, she might well have come off worst - deservedly. At a crunch, her transport would have been no match for mine: she would have been seriously outclassed, bantam versus heavyweight. I was sitting in a veritable tank of a car,
a Land Rover Discovery, an enormously robust, tall and sturdy vehicle designed to cope with estate managers’ bumpy, bouncy and chassis-testing journeys over rough terrain, and yet at the same time to offer an unsurpassed comfort level and feeling of safety. It was upgraded about two years ago and still fits admirably into the bracket of off-roaders quite capable of carrying its seven-seater passenger load in its capacious and comfy inside around town and on the school runs. Driving is a treat, with its loftiness offering all-round visibility and its eight speed automatic gearing silkily smooth. With the vast improvements made by Land Rover to its suspension system over the passing years, and in answer to the pleas of its buyers, the Discovery makes light work of the most demanding and challenging ground. That’s all helped by a clever Terrain Response button which has useful icons to give the driver the option of suitable 4x4 settings. Inside too, all the control switches and clickers, pushers and pullers have high visibility and a

simplicity and ease of use that lessens the burden for whoever is behind the wheel. And just to take your mind off the racket of the school-bound kids packed noisily into the pew-like seats, there is an all-round sound stereo system of superb quality. Kerbside, the Discovery‘s presence is one of height, weight and practicality, with a steadfastness that is a solid advantage when you are looking for a stolid safety for you and yours on the move. Economic? Er….well, maybe not quite the value for money on that front, but helped by an automatic stop-start facility that does offer some fuel-saving to ease the burden on the wallet and purse. Overall, and with its vital surround-view cameras to aid parking, the Discovery fits most of the requirements demanded of an all-rounder when you are looking for capability combined with comfort and top-class safety. That brainless woman, whose nearmiss could easily have been a disaster, is lucky to have escaped bumping into my veritable armoured car…

GARDENING MATTERS
All those helpful garden mags/articles have a little agenda of gardening tasks for each month...and yes, I fully intend doing it for this mag...but tasks for January?? Really? Since it’s cold, wet and generally miserable during this month, here’s a light-hearted response, more of a ‘Tasks to Avoid in January’...
reosote the fence. Logic tells you this is the obvious time to do it. The perennials have died back, there’s little or no growth in the beds, so there’ll be the least damage to plants. But hey, in February, there’ll be more light and the weather will have picked up a tad…leave it till then. Rake out the moss in the lawn. Not sure this is such a great idea, with the lawn being so wet… Prune the fruit trees. This could be a bit risky if there’s a sudden cold snap and the frost penetrates into the twigs and branches that you’ve just cut. Definitely a February job. Herbaceous perennials can be lifted and divided in January. And then what? There isn’t enough space in the garden as it is. It hurts you far too much to throw them away, and there’s only so much that your friends and neighbours can relieve you of before
C
they start avoiding you. Clear out the shed. Why risk all your nice, dry, carefully stacked (ahem) equipment out of the shed, only to see it get wet in the drizzle? And anyway, that broken mower that last worked in 1990 could still come in useful…. Check your garden tools. Take a good look at all your tools and equipment in this slow period before spring bounces in (hollow laugh). Could they be cleaner? Yes. Sharper? Yes. Better oiled? Yes. Are you going to do it? No. Plant some early veg under cloches. Dohhhhh. Putting out cloches to warm the soil is tantamount to giving every bug in the vicinity a centrallyheated house and filling it with food for them for the winter. Leave the beds empty and cold, and freeze the little toe-rags into submission. They don’t need cossetting. Replace any wobbly or broken fence panels. Oh, how you’d really love to,
but with your new green credentials, maybe it’s just better to make do, more environmentally friendly…. Review garden notes about successes and failures in the garden and greenhouse. Huh? Garden notes??? Do I look that organised? And anyway, the successes won’t take long to list, unless ‘failed to kill’ can be counted as one. January is the perfect month for checking through your seed packets. Find a box and file them in the date they should be sown. Yeah, like that’s going to happen. Hooray, you’ve justified leaving all those, well done, good jaaaaaaaab. Absolutely no point in making work for yourself, so feet up, cup of tea, and enjoy watching the rain/snow/hail outside your window from the comfort of your settee. Happy Christmas to you all, and love, joy, peace in the New Year and beyond.

Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer, Jingle Bells... we all love a good singalong at Christmas! Well, here at Bookham Library, we have a jolly sing-song every week at Rhymetime, Mondays from 11–11.30am.
These are free, popular and fun 30 minute sessions for babies, toddlers and their carers throughout the year. We’d love you to join in as our Rhymetime volunteer. Spend just half an hour a week in the company of delightful little ones, playing instruments, laughing, and singing all the best songs and rhymes - it’s good for the soul! If you’re interested have a look on the
Surrey Libraries website or pop into Bookham Library for a chat. Our library volunteers are such a huge asset. If you need help with computers or tablets, you can book an appointment with our fantastic Digital Buddies for one-to-one help and guidance. Polesden Lacey
1930s Christmas
From the 1st to 23rd December, you’re invited to step back in time and enjoy all the glamour and sparkle of a high society soiree at Polesden Lacey in the 1930s. Adults £17.00 | Children £9.60 | Families £44 .00 | Free to National Trust members
tep into the hall and admire the 18ft Christmas tree, adorned with authentic ornaments and lights – this is how Christmas should look. The fireplaces are filled with poinsettia, filling each room with festive warmth, while Christmas trees twinkle in every corner. Delicate mistletoe adorns each picture frame in anticipation of Christmas kisses. Scents of nutmeg and cinnamon drift from the servery, while 1930s tunes float through the air to set your feet dancing. Christmas for families If you’ve been good this year, then head to the gun room and set down your Christmas wishes in a letter to Father Christmas. While you’re in the house, look out for Mrs Greville’s mischievous pooches, Billy and Dougal, who are having a party of their own. Out in the garden, check out the chicken coop’s Christmas makeover, before taking a horse and carriage ride through the frosty grounds to the sound of sleigh bells – weekends only, adults £3 and children £2 each. Unseen Spaces tours Explore rooms within the house that have never been open to National Trust visitors before, like the servants attic bedrooms and the King’s suite. Find out about our plans to restore them to their original glory. Unseen spaces tours will happen every day in December at
S
2.15pm. We suggest a £2 donation per person. Collect your key from visitor reception. Christmas shopping Polesden Lacey has one of the largest and best-stocked gift shops in the National Trust, so don’t forget to leave time for some Christmas shopping. Selling delicious wines and nibbles, fine homeware, artisan crafts made by local artists, books and unique giftware for grown-ups and kids alike, you’re guaranteed to find great stockingfillers for your loved ones. Post-Christmas frivolities The festive magic doesn’t have to end on December 25. Fuel up on cold turkey sandwiches before joining us for some post-Christmas fun to round off the festive season. From Boxing Day until Jan 7, there will be fewer rooms open in the house, but visitors will be able to see the main hall. Polesdenopoly - a Christmas classic with a twist Get silly playing Mrs Greville’s life-sized version of a classic family boardgame. £5 per game pack. Cheating is advisable. Boxing Day brunch and walk on Ranmore Common Don’t fancy cooking anything beyond a piece of toast? Let us do the work for you. Why not indulge before walking it off with our guided ranger walk?

Message from
The Surrey Police Neil Clarke, 13363 Crime Reduction Advisor from the Eastern Division, discusses the safety and security measures we should be taking in our homes during the festive season.
T
he safety and security of ourselves and our homes should be a year-round concern, but around Christmas and the festive season in general, many of us are out and about, travelling to and from events, parties and visiting friends and family. This can also mean that we are leaving our homes unoccupied for periods of time. In terms of home security, please remember to consider that opportunist burglars will look for premises where access is the easiest and where it appears that there may be something valuable to steal. Around Christmas, many of us buy presents for our families and friends. Please consider how they are stored in your home and try not to make it too obvious that there are “rich pickings” to be had. No-one would suggest that you cannot decorate your home as you please, and around Christmas time, many people like to put presents around a tree, often in full display from a front window. Please consider making sure that access to your home is protected with suitable locks on doors and windows. If you have an alarm system, please use it. Putting some downstairs lights to come on with a timer switch can be a good idea. We do not recommend having a landing light come on with the ground floor in darkness as this does not convince anyone that the premises is occupied. A low level hall light on a timer would be a much better option. Once presents are unwrapped, consider how you dispose of wrapping and packaging of expensive items. Leaving
them outside for the next collection can show a potential burglar that there is something inside the house worth taking. When out and about, everyone should also consider the serious issue of drinking alcohol and driving. Surrey Police officers enforce the “drink-drive” law every day. We are aware, however, that this time of year can present increased problems, and our officers will be targeting those who are irresponsible enough to drink and drive, not only putting their own lives at risk but also the lives of their passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Although there is a legal limit of alcohol for driving in the UK, it is well recognised that any amount in your body when you drive will affect your ability to react. Other factors, such as tiredness, medications and stress, can also slow down your reaction times. Mix any of these factors with alcohol and you could be under the influence of a potentially lethal cocktail. It is for these reasons that we want to highlight the vital importance of protecting yourself and others at this time of year by planning alternative and safe ways of getting around if you are planning to have a drink. Consider using public transport, booking a taxi or asking a nondrinking friend or relative to drive, or at least to collect you. You can always offer to return the favour! Surrey Police officers have a duty of care to enforce the law and to protect the public, and part of this is to take robust action against anyone found to be driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

TRANSITIONBOOKHAM Working to make our village more planet-friendly We're taking our usual break in December but as always we'll be supporting Bookham's late-night shopping event on Thursday 8th December. It's very easy to generate a lot of waste at this time of year. If you're looking for new ideas to use up leftovers or want to check what you can recycle, visit the website www.recycleforsurrey.org.uk. Also see the Ten Things You Can Do page on our website for other resource-saving ideas.
Our open meetings resume on Wednesday 18th January with a review of 2016 and looking at what we can do in 2017. It's also a good time to take a fresh look at our individual green resolutions. If you'd like to help spread the green message in our local community please do join us. The meeting is at the St Nicolas Pastoral Centre from 7.30pm-9.15pm (entrance on Church Road between Carolina's and Heads Up). Entry is free, donations welcome for refreshments.
