last. (#bookyourbooster!) There is certainly much more going 26/10/2021 14:19 on locally this time around, so proceed with caution and let’s just hope we can weather the storm, so to speak! Talking of storms, I’ve just spotted a weather forecast which predicts snow on 26th November! Very specific! Maybe by the time of reading this, you will know how accurate that was! Weather permitting, as I said, there is lots going on this month locally; we have a good selection of details for you to take a look at, many being festive events. Our What’s on pages give way, to a packed and enticing selection. I do hope you find something that takes your fancy! As well as this, we include not one, but two really great competitions this month; our ever popular Cash Prize Draw, see details on page 15 and also a chance to win a really beautiful photography book ‘Surrey in Photographs’. It is stunning and for any lover of Surrey, this would make a wonderful Christmas gift. See page 44 for this. Sadly as editor I can’t enter, but this book is firmly on my Christmas list. And there is more beautiful photography in the form of an exhibition too. Dorking Camera Club pull out all the stops at Denbies again this year. I’m very sure it will be well worth a visit. We are also happy to include a good selection of information and reports from local clubs and organisations, not forgetting Bookham Choral Society who are staging a much anticipated concert, see page 6 for more on this and our centre pages come from Churches Together sharing all you need to know with regard to times and dates over the Christmas period. I wish you all a Happy and Joyous Festive period, keep well and enjoy yourselves.

From all (3) of us to all (many) of you:

A Very Happy Christmas!

This month we caught up with Tracy & Simon, who recently saw their lovely two-bedroom property in Knaphill for the first time since their purchase was completed. BTLH had done the thing they do best and the house was looking smart and ready for some guest action. “Shall we move in?” they joked as they strolled through the door. Honestly, they would need to fight off the punters if they were serious, because we had so much interest on this smart, modern property before it was even listed, that we could have rented it four times over.

Why did you choose BTLH to find your investment property for you? “We were keen to outsource because we both have arduous jobs and work long hours – although we knew we wanted to invest in property, we also knew we wouldn’t be able to manage the process ourselves and were painfully aware that we could make mistakes. In short, we had the “investment will” but none of the expertise!” What were you hoping to achieve? “We see the house as being in lieu of Simon’s pension. Making an investment in property instead of shares we are aware that we might earn an annual surplus which would be all well and good but our priority is the longer term aim of owning a property which increases in value.” How have you found the process? “It has been very good overall –the initial phase was excellent, within two days we were looking at houses in general and Advertising feature

specifically this house. It was a no brainer.” “Adrian was very clear once we got in to the purchase there is a limit as to how much they can do to assist. We found then that we were chasing and working through things ourselves when it came to setting up the mortgage and arranging the transfer of the deeds for the purchase – but BTLH had great contacts for loans and solicitors. BTLH identified the perfect property within our budget and were very clear about how to proceed.”

What advice would you give? “Investing in stocks and shares can be rather sterile, investing in a property is a more emotional decision. We genuinely wanted to be involved in the process and already feel a connection with the house. That is exactly what we wanted, rather than be too remote or feel it was completely removed from us. Simon has always aspired to this sort of investment and felt the desire to do it at least once, and, frankly, we just didn’t know where to start. Going forward we now have a mixture of investments instead of being so limited. We look forward to maybe doing this all again!” Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? In its 66th year, the Dorking Camera Club displays beautiful and memorable imagery from amateur photographers who live in the Dorking area. David Balaam, Dorking Camera Club’s

Chairman said: “When the pandemic hit and the nation went into lockdown we were forced to meet virtually. Club meetings were held on Zoom and our exhibition was held online. It is really great to be back displaying our work to the public in person at Denbies this year. We will also keep the exhibition online, so the public have the flexibility to view our club’s exhibition images via our website too. “It’s a stunning display which includes plenty of photographs shot locally. This year’s show promises something that’ll appeal to everyone. For those who see something that catches the eye, there’s the opportunity to buy a print. It’s the perfect opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and buy a memorable keepsake for someone special.” Dorking Camera Club annual photography exhibition is sponsored by chartered financial planners HJP.

THE MEETING PLACE THE COMMUNITY FRIDGE - Our volunteers hate food waste which is why we love distributing the surplus food that we collect from supermarkets etc.– we know that if we didn’t collect this food it could be put into landfill. The recent TV series presented by David Attenborough and Prince William - The Earthshot Prize, featured a number of projects attempting to deal with some of the world’s big issues that could bring harm to our planet, waste being one of them. We were delighted to see that the project embraced by the City of Milan to distribute surplus food within the city in a very similar way to ourselves won a prize. When we compared the figures quoted re amounts of food distributed, they are very similar to those of Mid Surrey Community Fridges, of which we are a part. Well done to all involved, both in Milan and Surrey. Please come along to our Help Yourself Tables on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and use the food we collect.

ANNA CHAPLAINCY - Our Anna Chaplain is networking with care homes and individuals in the area and would like to hear from anyone who would be willing to be involved in this work, whether behind the scenes or in the community. Just an hour a week would be so good. Do get in touch through our website.

SUPPORTS SCHOOLS IN LEBANON You will perhaps have seen recent images of Lebanon. A country in crisis. Hyperinflation, fuel and food shortages, unrest, and repeated political failure. Yet there is a light of hope shining in the darkness. Bookham’s international education charity Aprender has been supporting refugee schools in Lebanon for the last 6 years.

Syrian refugees are visited by their teacher during school closures in North Lebanon. The head teacher is receiving on-going support & training from Aprender Coach Gail Hard, formerly of The Dawnay School.

West Down resident Rachael Underwood is Aprender’s Early Years specialist and has produced a fantastic training manual to help support preschools looking after vulnerable children. Its proven methodology has produced a big impact in schools from Beirut and into the Lebanese mountains supporting Syrian refugee families. Founder and CEO Phil Hawkins of Greenacres

said “It was great seeing the results of the training and we wanted to reach further, which meant we needed the manual to be translated into Arabic.” Following contact with Bookham and Horsley Rotary Club, its members generously funded the translation which was completed in August 2021. Arabic is a complex language and Aprender were fortunate to have a Hanan, a Lebanese teacher who had participated in the training and put it into practice, agreed to act as the linguistic and cultural translator. Since the new Arabic version launched, impact has increased and children who have come through trauma Hanan, our translator and conflict now based in Lebanon benefit from high quality early years, an investment which the World Bank considers to be the best way to increase growth in human capital. Aprender are now planning on using their new Arabic version to help expand into Syria and into North Africa, in communities that will benefit so much from the increased quality of care and development that their children will experience. The economic crisis continues but it’s been so good to see that, despite the conflict and chaos, oasis of joy and wonder are possible. Could you support Aprender’s next part of the journey? Visit their website at www.aprender. co.uk to find out more and, if you would like, to donate to such a worthy cause.

The churches in Bookham, Effingham and Fetcham want to join together in wishing your household the best Christmas possible in these strange times, to know the comfort and joy that Jesus brings. Unfortunately, the risk remains of Covid-19 restrictions being re-imposed during this period. Precautions continue in our churches but are presently much less severe than last year. It is important that you check beforehand what these may be at any service you wish to attend. Each church will publish this on their website together with any need to “book ahead” and what will be live-streamed. Generally, however, it is a good idea to plan on wearing your mask at services.

Organico

OMEGA RICH PESTO

INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

• 2 cups of basil (loosely filled) • 2 cups of parsley (loosely filled) • 3-5 Fish4Ever anchovies in organic olive oil • 1/2 cup pitted green olives • 2 cloves garlic • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1/4-1/2 cup cashews • 1/2 cup of Organic Cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil (add more if you think it needs to be runnier - you can always add more after) Optional: 1/2 cup grated parmigiano-reggiano (omit if dairy free & add more cashews)

1. Pop all of the ingredients into a food processor (apart from the EVOO) 2. Once all of the ingredients have started to break down and become a paste start to add the EVOO, I poured mine in (as I have an open top food processor), but you can add some and mix, then clean around the sides and add some more… Or just pour it all in I’m sure it works just fine 3. Store in a glass jar in the fridge for a couple of days and add to eggs, pasta, meats, fish.

As all our readers will know, the county of Surrey is blessed with green open spaces, including the North Downs, the Weald and the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The highest point in the county is Leith Hill, with its landmark eighteenth-century tower, one of the county’s many National Trust sites. First recorded as “Suthinge”, in 722, Surrey became a favourite royal hunting ground and today it is renowned as a centre of horse-racing with courses at Epsom, Kempton and Sandown. Racing of another kind once took place at Brooklands, the scene of many record-breaking motoring feats, and during the Second World War, aircraft were manufactured there. A museum now celebrates the site’s illustrious heritage. Professional photographer John Miller has captured the spirit, essence and identity of Surrey in a series of superb images. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

HOW VICTORY IN SURREY SET THE SCENE FOR THE NATIONAL TRUST ANNE MILTON-WORSSELL recently gave the first post-pandemic hybrid monthly talk for L&DLHS members both live at the Letherhead Institute and via Zoom. Studying the correspondence of the founders of the National Trust, she told the story of a triumph in Surrey that set the scene for the NT’s foundation. Octavia Hill and Robert Hunter were both Londoners who came to live in Surrey. Robert Hunter lived in Haslemere. By 1883 when he first moved there he had already been active for many years as honorary solicitor for the Commons Preservation Society and would be knighted for his endeavours. Haslemere was considered a select place to live, referred to in advertisements as ‘the little Alps’. In 1894 Sir Robert Hunter was appointed chairman of the Haslemere parish council. On 5 May 1899 they received a letter calling attention to the ‘removal and destruction of hollies and other trees from the open spaces on Sir Robert Hunter Hindhead’. The council expressed a hope that Mr Whitaker Wright, Lord of the Manor, would prevent any further injury to an area of such value to the public. He was allowing gangs of 500 workmen with machinery to lift the hollies, along with large clumps of earth, to landscape his new dwelling nearby. From humble origins he had emigrated to America, lost a fortune, returned

50 Looklocal Magazine - December 2021

to England and eight years later had become a millionaire, and acquired the manor of Witley, which included lordship of Hindhead Common and the Devil’s Punchbowl.

The Devil’s Punchbowl, Hindhead Common

Haslemere parish council tried to agree a lease of manorial rights to the Common but he was not interested. Then in 1900 he was denounced for misuse of invested funds. Awaiting trial for fraud in 1902 he tried to escape first to Paris and then New York but was extradited, tried in 1904, but killed himself after receiving a seven-year prison sentence. His property was auctioned with lot 47 ‘the manorial rights over Hindhead Commons, including Devil’s Punchbowl, Gibbet Hill etc. 750 acres timber included’. Sir Robert Hunter led a campaign to raise £4000 to buy it. The property would be vested in the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest and Natural Beauty. He set this up himself. When the auction was held in Godalming on 26 October 1905 the committee had raised enough money. The land was conveyed to the National Trust on 22 March 1906. Sir Robert also lived just long enough to see Box Hill saved for the nation. For more information from the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Book Reviews Brought to you by your local libraries

DECEMBER 2021 ‘The Smallest Man’ by Frances Quinn (Paperback £8.99) Inspired by a true story this novel spans two decades that changed England for ever. Nat Davey is the fictional small man of the novel and in history he was Jeffery Hudson, the French Queen Henrietta Maria’s dwarf. The year is 1625 and Nat has been sold by his father for a few shillings to be hidden in a pie and presented to the Queen as a present. The Smallest Man is a heartwarming tale about being different, but not letting it hold you back. About being brave enough to take a chance, and about how, when everything is falling apart, true friendship holds people together. ‘Are We Having Fun Yet?’ by Lucy Mangan (hardback £16.99 - published 14th October) This novel of family life made me laugh out loud. Lucy Mangan’s journalism has always been fun as well as intelligent, and her fictional family is believable without being dull, written with wit that never becomes cold-hearted. The affection beneath the daily frustrations shines through during this year in the life of Liz, who never gets quite enough time away from her husband and two children. Whether in the thick of family demands, on nights of freedom with friends, or rare moments of blissful solitude, Liz’s diary is an extremely pleasurable read. ‘Second Place’ by Rachel Cusk (Hardback £14.99) Longlisted for The Booker Prize 2021, Cusk brings her depth of insight, characterisation and storytelling to this novel of art, ideals and expectations. A woman invites a famous artist to stay in the second place, a small dwelling on the remote coastal land where she lives, hoping that his vision will bring meaning and revelation to her life. The relationship between them, and his treatment of the other people who share her home, brings to her doorstep questions of privilege and subjection. Cusk explores those interesting places where success tips into arrogance, love tips into submission, and how to find the elusive balancing point.

Seat IBIZA

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

I revel in the opportunity to secure a good deal in the car market - and to my mind there is no better or more welcome chance than the latest exciting bargain offer from Seat with their updated version of the Ibiza, first seen on the market 37 years ago. I would guarantee it is destined to be a best seller among those who, like me, revel in getting value for money and, at the same time, enjoy the practical benefits that accompany it. The brand new spanking Ibiza, at a sheer bargain asking price of £16,790, packed with perfection, generous standard equipment, low running costs and an excellent safety set-up, all adds up to an irresistible package. If my garage wasn’t already full to the brim I would certainly treat my deserving self to a pleasurable Christmas prezzie. When it first came on the scene its engine was built in collaboration with Porsche and its looks styled by super car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Okay, the latest version cannot name drop like that marvellous thinker and planner, but there is no denying it is all set for soaring popularity in the fiercely competitive tiny car market, with noted rivals like the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo and Skoda Fabia, there to overtake. Okay, so what are the main changes? Firstly the car’s interior was previously rather tired

56 Looklocal Magazine - December 2021

looking and drab - and overloaded with easily scratched plastics. To a degree that could still be a fair description for the entry-level models - you now can enjoy soft-touch materials on the dashboard and…wow-wee....a leathercovered, luxury steering wheel and handbrake. There is also impressive faux-suede upholstery available if you fancy it. They are benefits that to my mind put it well on a par with the popular Polo . So what else? The infotainment screen has been upgraded with a crisp and responsive screen and you may flick through the menus without hesitating, Seat has left its engine line-up and that’s okay because it keeps things simple and easy to make your choice. There are three petrol engines available producing between 79bhp, 93bhp or 108bhp. My personal preference is the middle option, badged 1.0 TSI 95, which pulls enthusiastically from low revs and gives 0-62mph and return in a fraction under eleven-seconds. In comparison the entry level is a bit of a struggler. It is a super-duper riding car that soaks up minor bumps in the road and guaranteeing to make your journey more comfy than, dare I say, the Fiesta or the Fabia. And, oh boy, does it handle well! One of the best in its class with plenty of feedback through the steering wheel and its body lean is well controlled with the expert sports suspension. This tempting hot contender amid the small car offerings is priced pretty much similarly to the Fiesta, but is cheaper than the Polo. And it’s rather generous standard fittings, with confidence-inspiring safety kit, allied to low running costs, ensures it all adds up to just the sort of deal and value for your hard-earned, you could be looking for. Take my word......

LEATHERHEAD LIONS

Project Wenceslas DO YOU RECEIVE FUEL ALLOWANCE AND DON’T NEED IT? WE KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES. Project Wenceslas - as the line in the popular carol says - is about ‘gathering winter f-u-e-l’. Leatherhead Lions have been running the project since December, 2013. During this time, we have asked better-off pensioners who don’t need their winter fuel allowance to donate it. Their donations are placed in a ring-fenced account and every penny is then used to support those less fortunate and in fuel poverty or simply can’t put food on the table. Since its inception, we have helped over 200 households to keep the lights on and stay warm. We work very closely with the Citizens Advice Bureau in Leatherhead and Dorking and Christians Against Poverty in Bookham to identify the clients needing help. Often, it is serious illness that tips a family into difficulty. For example, we helped one family when the main breadwinner fell seriously ill and had to give up work and his partner also had to curtail work to care for him. From having two incomes, the family became dependent on benefits and fell into arrears. Our Wenceslas fund offered a life-line to pay off energy debts and keep them warm. Sometimes, it’s a breakdown in relationship that causes the problem. One lady needing help had to move into a safe house with her children to escape an abusive partner. Faced with the costs of setting up a new home alone and from scratch, she struggled to find money for the pre-payment meters that such accommodation

invariably comes with. A significant top-up on her prepayment meter cards helped to get her started. We are appealing for funds again this year, so if you don’t need your winter fuel allowance, why not donate it? (If you are a tax payer, gift-aid your donation to increase its value by 25%). Every penny donated will go to help families suffering with fuel poverty. And like all donations made to Lions, nothing is ever deducted for administration or expenses.

TO DONATE: Send a cheque to Wenceslas Appeal, Leatherhead Lions Club, 86 Newton Wood Road, Ashtead, KT21 1NW. Or visit our website www.leatherheadlions.org.uk and donate direct or download Gift Aid Form. Looklocal Magazine - December 2021 57

NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

We are noting a variety of different types of criminal activity across the County in recent months and I would like to take this opportunity to mention just two of them here. The first is the theft of vehicles that are fitted with a “keyless” opening system. There are two main methods of theft that we are seeing regularly. One is by using a relay device which is actually very simple to build and use. A lot of modern vehicles are fitted with a keyless system, so the vehicle can be entered and started without the need to touch the key. In basic terms this works by the key constantly sending out a signal, the car constantly searches for that signal and when in range the car then allows the vehicle to be entered and started. Unfortunately, what thieves have been doing is using a device to pick up the signal from the key and amplifying it, so the car believes the key is next to it and allows access, start the engine and driven away. Faraday pouches or a simple metal container can be used to prevent this by blocking the signal. Also, some manufacturers have recently changed their keys, so they now have motion sensors which, when left static, go into a “sleep” mode and no longer emit a signal. Unfortunately, this can’t be retro fitted so millions of cars are still vulnerable. We are also focusing on the increasingly widespread problem of catalytic convertor theft. This is becoming increasingly common across Surrey and would appear to be linked to organised crime. What is a catalytic converter? Catalytic converters (pictured) are fitted under the engine of a car. They help to filter dangerous gases

58 Looklocal Magazine - December 2021

from the exhaust, using a catalyst to react with the exhaust fumes and change their chemical structure. What makes and models are more at risk? Some of the most common are: Honda Jazz; Toyota Prius; Lexus RX; Honda CRV; Toyota Auris Hybrids will always remain the most sought-after vehicle in this kind of crime as they have two power sources, an electric motor and a petrol or diesel engine, so their catalytic converters are used less frequently to process pollutants. That means the metals inside are less likely to have corroded, making them more valuable. How are they being stolen? Thieves use a jack to raise cars up onto two wheels, then slide underneath the vehicle and cut the catalytic converter off using an electric saw. It’s a quick process, and thefts can be completed in under a minute. What can be done to prevent it? Raising public awareness is vital – many people don’t realise what they’re seeing, thinking that a vehicle has broken down and the thieves are doing legitimate maintenance work. Catalytic converters can be fitted with locks, which will slow thieves down, and marked, which helps us identify them if they’re stolen. But the greatest deterrent is a swift police response.
