Welcome to Look Local in February and our first issue of 2014! Welcome to Look Local in February and our first issue of 2014. It’s been full on here since the Christmas break, with much catching up following our little rest! We are now fully back in the swing and ready for the year ahead, which promises to be as hectic and fun packed as ever in our village. So what do we have inside for you this month? One of our local schools enjoyed a visit from a real ‘A list’ celebrity recently. Look Local was delighted to be there to cover the visit, so all you footie fans, turn to page 10/11 and see who came to town! I also enjoyed a little trip out with Ron Fowler our local fishmonger. Ron never fails to amaze me with his stories and contacts, he’s quite a dark horse, is Ron! Find out where we went. We also include many local notices, with news and contributions from a number of local contributors, as well as a wide selection of local businesses for your convenience. Remember that we now cover four local areas: in addition to Bookham, there is Look Local Cobham, Essential Esher and The Weybridge Flyer. Our magazines are reaching 26 000 homes and businesses across these four areas, ten times a year! If you are looking for an effective, affordable way to advertise your business or service this year, please do give us call. We would be delighted to hear from you.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all! Warmest regards, Ros x

Fantastic news!

Planning permission has been granted for Bruce’s Doggy Day Care! The support from the local community, Bruce’s clients and local councillors was overwhelming. This played a huge part in achieving this positive result. The council was inundated with letters of support, with over 100 people writing in, some of whom didn’t even

own dogs but still supported the business! Elmbridge has attached a condition that the permission is only valid for Bruce Casalis and that should he stop using the land, it will revert to agricultural use, but the main headline is that the business can continue to operate their much-loved service.

For all those who supported Bruce,

thank you! 9

Blue is the colour,

Football is the game,

we’re all together

& The Dawnay is our name! There was much excitement in the air when I visited The Dawnay School, Bookham, a little while ago. A very special visitor was due any minute and everyone was looking forward to meeting him. Frank Lampard, the Chelsea and England football player, was coming to tell the children about some books he has written recently.

Better known for his footwork and midfield talent, writing is a new venture for Frank and we were all interested to hear why he had decided to write a series of children’s books which actually are not about football, although they do centre around a magic football. Headteacher, Mrs Gail Hard, introduced Frank and welcomed him to The Dawnay.

Following this welcome chat, Frank started by reading aloud from his first book, then a selection of children followed him and read some more. The audience of children sat in silence; girls and boys alike were listening intently. Frank told us that he has two daughters who are 6 and 8. He said they were his inspiration to write his books. He told us that they both really enjoyed it when he told them his own made-up stories, their favourite being about a group of children who had all sorts of adventures centred around a magic football; there were no limits to what they could experience or who they meet or where they could go. It gave great scope for a whole array adventures, whilst capturing & nurturing their imaginations. Then Frank bravely invited the children to ask him some questions.

reading famous people’s biographies.

How long did it take you to write these books?

How many goals has he scored for Chelsea?

Frank said he actually started to put them together about 5 years ago.

Where did you write?

He said that he spends a fair bit of time travelling when playing different football matches and so he always took his note pad with him and jotted down various plots, so basically whenever he had some spare time.

Why did he write them?

This was partly to encourage his own and other children to read more, but also because it was something totally different from playing football which he thought would be great fun.

What other books had he read to his children?

Apparently, they really like Horrid Henry books and also a children’s book by David Walliams.

What sort of books does he like to read?

Frank said when he was at school he really liked learning about history, so he enjoys books about anything historical. He also enjoys

Which one of his books does he like the best? After a little thought, Frank decided Book 5 was his favourite so far!

Did he do the illustrations in the book as well?

He smiled broadly and said ‘No I didn’t, a gentleman named Mike Jackson from America did those for me.’

Does he want to go on and write more books?

Frank said yes, he definitely wants to write lots more adventures and continue with this series of books.

What’s it like being a footballer?

‘Brilliant’ came the answer. He said ‘It is really good fun but quite hard work making sure I keep as fit as possible.’ He said he has to make sure he gets enough sleep and that he eats well too. 207 goals for Chelsea! Frank was great with the children and everyone really enjoyed his visit. Afterwards, Mrs Hard asked him if he had any questions for the children. Much to everyones delight, he asked

Who is the strictest teacher?

There was a vast selection of answers to this, accompanied by much giggling, but actually no one was singled out (phew!)! There are currently five books in the series and Frank promises more to follow. The first five are entitled :• Frankie verses The Pirate Pillagers • Frankie verses The Rowdy Romans • Frankie verses The Cowboy Crew • Frankie verses The Mummy’s Menace • Frankie verses The Knight’s Nasties Thanks must go to the charming Frank Lampard & The Dawnay School for inviting Look Local Magazine to share this very special visit!

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary. • A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can

typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

RECIPE Sometimes, there are days when only chocolate will do. There are other days when you find you have a surplus of over-ripe bananas. We have a policy of never throwing food away, so this recipe marries both these ingredients together. It’s best with really ripe bananas that are even going black on the skin, if you like a ripe, sweet almost toffee-like flavour. You can top with a chocolate buttercream but I think that’s just too much (although, each to their own!) MAKES 16 large muffins or 18-20 smaller cakes

Banana & Chocolate Cupcakes Ingredients • • • • • •

• •

125g unsalted butter at room temperature, diced 250g golden caster sugar (white will do) 2 large eggs, whisked 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 250g plain flour, sieved with 2 teaspoons baking powder (it’s worth the faff for a lighter bake) 5 small or 4 large bananas, peeled and mashed (it’s easier to cut them up first with a cutlery knife and mash with a fork. You don’t to pulverise them, just roughed up a bit!) 175g chocolate chips (milk or plain) or good quality chocolate (70% solids), chopped into small pieces 2 x 12 hole muffin tins and paper cases.

Instructions • •

• •

• • • •

Cream with sugar and butter until pale and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes in a stand mixer). Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the eggs in about 4 stages, beating well after each addition. If necessary, use the spatula to scrap the bowl and beater so that the eggs are incorporated into all the mix. Carefully add the sieved flour and baking powder, mashed bananas and chocolate. Don’t plonk them in from a great height. Using a large metal spoon or a spatula (they usually come with a stand mixer), fold in carefully just enough to mix thoroughly, without losing the lightness. You can use the stand mixer to do this but I find they don’t quite reach the bottom of the bowl and you end up with unmixed cake! Plus, it’s possible to overbeat, giving a slightly hard top to the cupcakes. Spoon into the cupcake cases, filling to 2/3 full (they do rise). Cook for about 25 minutes. They are cooked if a skewer or cocktail stick comes out clean. Remove from the oven but leave in the tins for about 10 minutes before removing & placing on a wire rack to cool. Once cool, you can ice with chocolate buttercream or eat them as they are.

What Ron’s friend found in an Attic! I wonder if any of you have discovered unusual items when clearing out your attics ? A friend of Ron Fowler found an amazingly huge chef’s knife when he was doing just that. Not knowing what to do with it, he thought of Ron, who has a pretty impressive selection of his own food knives to assist with the preparation of all that fish we see in his shop. Ron was delighted to receive this unusual item and said it is actually the largest chef’s knife he has ever seen, but he didn’t quite know what to do with it himself! The knife is made from carbon steel, and for hygiene reasons is not appropriate to be used in the shop. Everything has to be stainless steel these days, said Ron. Now, something you may not know about Ron is that he has had a close association for many years with the Tante Marie Culinary Academy near Woking. The academy is part owned by TV chef Gordon Ramsey and many top chefs come from all over the world to attend their highly-acclaimed training courses. They pride themselves on offering classic

training, applied in a very modern way. Ron has visited regularly for the past 25 years to share his vast knowledge of fish and skills of preparation with the students. He also supplies the school with their fish throughout the year. Of course, as well as learning about fish, the students are also taught about many other specialisations during their time at Tante Marie, such as sugarcraft & piping skills, meat knowledge and pastry and cake baking. I went along to the Academy with Ron to present the principal of the school, Mr Andrew Maxwell, with the huge, antique knife! Andrew gave us a warm welcome and was delighted to accept this unusual and historic item. He thanked Ron very much and said it will be proudly displayed for all to enjoy. It’s not really known what such a large knife would have been used for, but it was probably for splitting large animal carcasses or similar. Thank you Ron, it was lovely to visit the Academy and see where many top chefs learn their skills. I wonder how many of us have actually been served fish by one of your many students over the years!

HIGH ACCOLADE INDEED! CONGRATULATIONS MUST GO TO ALAN BURROWS & NICKY DONBAVAND

OF ‘RUN TO LIVE’

It’s official! Mole Valley is the best place in the country for organised running events, according to the readers of Runner’s World Magazine. In its February 2014 issue, the magazine has awarded eight local events in their ‘Races of the Year’ for 2013. Event organisers Events to Live and Trionium, both based in Ashtead, organise several events in the area, featuring local beauty spots such as Polesden Lacey, Box Hill and Denbies Vineyard to name but a few. Events to Live is owned and was set up by Alan Burrows and Nicky Donbavand in 2011, having previously run their events through their specialist running shop Run to Live in Ashtead. They organised three of the events commended. Their largest, the Bacchus Half Marathon, scooped second in the best half marathon in the country category. The Bacchus Half Marathon, held in September, attracted runners and walkers

from all over the globe in 2013. People from Canada, Oman, Australia and the USA travelled to the county to take part. Over 1000 participants enjoyed the beautiful Mole Valley scenery as they passed along Ranmore Common and the North Downs Way. Alan Burrows, race director of Events to Live said, ‘We’re thrilled to have scooped this accolade. We have worked really hard over the last few years to establish Bacchus as one of the best events in the race calendar. The fact this is voted for by the race participants makes it really special’. Events to Live also collected third most scenic event for the Surrey Badger Half Marathon, also based from Denbies Vineyard in July, and eighth best 10k for the Polesden Lacey 10k in June. Events to Live has helped raise over £100,000 for various local charities.

GARDENING MATTERS And so to flower arranging. Ha, I never thought I would ever write those words, because I am absolutely hopeless at it. Houseplants, no problem, because they are mostly simple and straightforward, and my own houseplants have learned to thrive very well on neglect. But flower arranging requires a great deal of skill and effort, plus the resultant display is inevitably short-lived. But suppose there weres a way of combining the 2 techniques? In the 1950s, Violet Stevenson, a London florist, came up with just this idea: ie growing a group of foliage houseplants in a suitable container and embedding a flower holder near the front. The holder is then filled with water for use for a simple flower arrangement. This is called pot-etfleur and combines the permanence of houseplants with the temporary colour of a flower arrangement. The advantage is that it’s principally a house plant display, kept bright and interesting – or even seasonal – by the addition of a few flowers from the garden (or Sainsbury’s). The container needs to be wide and deep, and unless it has a drainage hole, a deep layer of charcoal at the bottom is essential. This is available from aquarium supply stores

or garden centres and works to keep the soil fresh. Choose tall plants to go at the back : sansevieria (mother-in-law’s tongue), staked ivy, ficus benjamina (weeping fig) all work well. There are many suitable plants for the sides – begonia, peperomia, African violet, pilea etc – and then trailing plants for the front – ivy, tradescantia and so on. When they’re all planted up, push a glass or metal cut flower holder down between the tall back plants and the trailing plants at the front. This is now ready for cut flowers of your choice. In spring, 3 or 4 daffodils would give a striking splash of colour against the green backdrop (if you like yellow, that is, ewwwww), and during the summer, you’ll be spoilt for choice from the garden: cornflower, echinacea, achillea, cosmos, roses, the list is endless. At Christmas, you could combine holly sprigs with mistletoe to give a festive arrangement. Et voilà, a very effective way to display 2/3 seasonal flowers, needing little or no skill – thankfully, in my case. If you’re interested, there’s a BBC link from the Chelsea Flower Show of 2009 which demonstrates this, although they use an oasis instead of a vase; http://www.bbc.co.uk/ chelsea/features/arranging_wed.shtml So, go, go gooooooooooo – and have fun.

WINDOW XP RETIRES -

WHAT’S THE FUSS? On April 8th 2014, Windows XP and Office 2003 ‘retire’. If you are a Windows XP user, what will it mean for you? The simple answer is that you will no longer receive Windows updates, security fixes or assistance and support concerning Windows XP. The copy of Windows XP on your computer will continue to work, it will not suddenly turn off and not work. Is that a big deal? On the surface, not really However, because your XP computer will become a less secure device, some companies have stated that they will not allow Windows XP to connect to their secure websites. This could impact any website that has a shopping basket or secure sign on it, be it your bank, building society, e-bay, PayPal, supermarket , Government/ tax office... this list goes on. The ramifications could be massive: you will leave yourself vulnerable to hackers and risks. If you have a machine that is 4 or more years old, we would urge you to replace it; if your machine is less than 4 years old, you can buy Windows 7 or a Windows 8 upgrade. If you are concerned about transferring your information, emails, data, music, photos and so on to a new machine, this is something we can do for you and make the transition as simple as possible. For further info, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can advise further.

STAFF VACANCY We currently have a full time vacancy, based in our Leatherhead store, for a Junior/Apprentice IT Technician: You will need to have an appreciation of how a computer works and how to resolve software and hardware problems and have a good telephone manner. The job will involve training and you will be working 5 days a week, including Saturdays.

To apply, please send your details via post or email to the address below.

BOOKHAM VANGUARD

NEW YEAR, NEW FOCUS For some months, Bookham Vanguard has been focusing on the considerations surrounding a Green Belt review for Bookham. This focus is now changing, as Mole Valley District Council will be taking on the Green Belt Review for Bookham, leaving the Bookham Vanguard Neighbourhood Forum to concentrate on creating and agreeing a vision for Bookham’s future. This vision will form the core of the Neighbourhood Development Plan which will be produced once the Green Belt Review for Mole Valley is completed. When Bookham Vanguard started work on the Green Belt Review in March 2013, Mole Valley District Council decided that it could delegate this responsibility to Bookham Vanguard. However, Government advice has changed and Bookham’s review now has to form part of the Council’s district-wide review. This has inevitably caused issues. Trying to make sure that the two approaches were consistent with each other has not been easy. A great deal of Bookham Vanguard time and effort has gone into making this work. Despite this, there are those who are not satisfied that the approach taken is sound. So, as an organisation that is working on behalf of the community, we have listened and reluctantly come to the conclusion that Bookham Vanguard should hand responsibility for the Green Belt review around Bookham back to Mole Valley. But this does not mean we cannot influence Bookham’s future. Bookham cannot be set in aspic. It has to move on. The world is changing around us. Bookham will change, whether we influence it or not. It is inevitable. The Neighbourhood Plan is a way for Bookham residents to have some control over what changes are made. What does the community want Bookham to be in 2030? What is the vision? What does this mean in terms of population mix, housing, shops, roads, schools and other services? Armed with the considerable work that has already been done, Bookham Vanguard’s aim will be to produce this vision together with the community over the coming months. This will be used to make informed input into Mole Valley’s considerations on the Green Belt review for Bookham. When this review emerges, we will be in a position to turn the vision into the planning policies for the Neighbourhood Development Plan, upon which the whole community will have a chance to vote in a referendum.

MEDICAL MATTERS!! CHANGES TO OUR BABY’S IMMUNISATIONS...

Having our tiny babies immunised is certainly not one of the most pleasant of duties as a parent but I often refer to it as a necessary evil. However, it can help to equip ourselves with a few facts. The immunisation schedule has changed recently in mainly two areas. For sometime now, we have offered three Meningitis C vaccines by the age of around 13 months (at 12 and 16 weeks and again at 12-13 months). However, the Health Protection Agency has detected an increase in the number of teenagers developing meningitis from this strain and have concluded that having the three vaccines at this age does not offer enough long-term protection against the disease. Therefore, the second dose has been dropped and instead will be offered at around 13 years. It is thought that the initial two doses are sufficient to protect younger children. The second change is the introduction of the Rotavirus vaccine, which has been added onto the 8 and 12 week immunisations. This is a liquid slowly squirted in the baby’s mouth. It is well known in other countries where it has been given for many years. It was previously not needed in this country but again, an increase in disease-prevalence has been found and the evidence is pointing towards the benefits of offering this vaccine to smaller, more vulnerable babies. For more information, have a look at https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/ system/uploads/attachment_data/file/254913/ Green_Book_Chapter_27b_v2_0.pdf http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/ Pages/vaccination-schedule-age-checklist.aspx

SURREY POLICE NOTICE

Neil Clarke, 13363 Neighbourhood Team Co-ordinator

We continue to be grateful that we are given this opportunity to communicate with a wider audience via Look Local Magazine. This month, we would like to make you aware of a nationwide property register called Immobilise and to tell you about how we feel it could be of benefit in helping to reunite stolen property with its owners. Thousands of items of property are lost or stolen each year in the UK. The Immobilise National Property Register already holds the details of 25 million items of property and it helps police identify the owners of lost and stolen property every day. If any item of registered property is lost or stolen, it can then be reported to Immobilise via your online account, making the information available nationally to all the major UK Police forces through their own systems. Immobilise combats the sale of stolen goods, gadgets and valuables by alerting the second-hand trade and publicly checkable

52

stolen goods register, CheckMEND, if an item is reported as missing. So many items can be registered with Immobilise and the service is free. Items such as laptops, smartphones, jewellery, bicycles, home entertainment systems and many other household items can all be registered. It is also possible to log details of serial numbers of property and publish photographs to make identification easier. You can register your own property by going to www.immobilise.com – it only takes a couple of minutes to sign up.

ADVANCED NOTICE

We have managed to arrange with the Dogs Trust to come to the Ashtead Recreation Ground, Barnett Wood Lane, on Sunday 23rd March 2014 between 10.00am and 4.00pm to offer FREE micro-chipping for dogs. From April 2016, it will be a legal requirement for dogs to be micro-chipped, so why not get it done sooner rather than later – and for free?

Recent Bookham Road Improvements

A couple of notable recent improvements to Bookham’s

roads were carried out by Surrey County Council Highways

contractors in December. For those living in Water Lane who

Water Lane 2012 - before road improvements

suffered a burst sewer and subsequent unbearable road conditions in December 2012, the final re-surfacing must bring unimaginable relief. Likewise at Dowlans, Groveside and West Down, residents have had to put up with intolerable road conditions for a long time, resulting in very dangerous potholes. The photo below shows the final Dowlans - before road improvements

Water Lane 2013 - after road improvements

surface after re-surfacing, which again must be a great relief to residents. The only problem now will be to keep vehicle speeds down on this excellent length of road. Thanks must go to County

Dowlans - after road improvements

Councillor Clare Curran and those at Bookham Residents’ Association who have pushed to get the improvements carried out, as well as those at Surrey County Council Highways and their contractors who were responsible for completing the work. Contact: Les Huett - BRA Publicity
