FEBRUARY RECIPE SUDOKU & WORD LADDER GARDENING MATTERS
From the Editor
It’s great to be back with you after our winter break! I hope you all did a better job than I did of avoiding all the germs which seemed to be abundant in Bookham this year. My coughing has only just subsided, and as a result, drastic action needed to be taken. I treated myself to a New Year present in the form of a Nutri Bullet. Have you heard of them? They seem to be all the rage in the health industry and certainly make the preparation of your own fresh fruit and vegetable juices very easy indeed. My intention: to boost my immune system and generally become healthier. So far, apple, carrot and fresh ginger are featuring, with a touch of spinach and even goji berries too. I highly recommend it, my five-a-day has turned into eight or nine a day without even noticing it. Anyway, enough free promotion for Nutri Bullet for now! But if you have any good combinations you think I might like, please do email them over. We might just have to include a ‘Juice of the Month’ from now on! Back to business, and in this issue we hear about a lovely local writing group. I enjoyed my visit so much that I asked if they would mind supplying me with a piece of their work each month to share with you. I am delighted to say that they were very happy to oblige! I do hope you enjoy their contributions over the coming months. I for one am really looking forward to them. Romantic times ahead with Valentine’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, so I suggest that if you intend to celebrate, it may be an idea to book your table nice and early to avoid disappointment! And not long after that it will be Pancake Day on Tuesday 17th so, despite the winter weather, there is still lots to look forward to! Warmest regards,

Pioneer Wall Cladding & Building Insulation Ltd.
Your house may have been this way for over 100 years, but now there is a simple, attractive and affordable solution. That is external wall insulation, which comes with a decorative finish, a 25-year guarantee and cashback from the government to cover part of the cost.
AFTER
BEFORE So, if you want to: • Get rid of the mould & damp for good • Reduce your heating bills by an average 30% • Make the outside of your house look beautiful

Then contact Pioneer Insulation for a free quote. A three bedroom semi-detached house will cost around £15,000 to completely insulate. The government is so keen for people in older properties to have this external wall insulation fitted that they will refund up to a third of the cost of the work, whatever your income. This means that the cost to you will be only around £10,000. The government has already offered the Green Deal package twice before, with the funding snapped up very quickly both times. They have now offered further funds from the 1st February 2015. If you want to take advantage of this offer, act quickly and register your interest with us now. As an approved Green Deal installer, you can save yourself around £900 by coming straight to us, rather than going through other advice sites that will just pass you on and charge a hefty introduction fee. A testimonial from a recent customer. “The house looks great and it feels so much warmer. We used to have black mould in one of the rooms. Now that the insulation has been on for a few weeks, the wall has dried and the mould has disappeared completely. Amazing.” (Mrs. Anna B, Thames Ditton).

CREATIVE WRITING FEATURE
WRITING
F R O M L I F E
D
o you like to write? Maybe you pen the odd poem or possibly you enjoy making up short stories for your children or grandchildren? Or are you planning your first novel? The art of creative writing is certainly a popular pastime, and here in Bookham, Chris Leonard’s ‘Writing from Life’ classes are a perfect place to explore your creative potential! Chris has been running her classes for some years now, and her groups meet weekly in the comfort of her home. I went along recently to meet the Wednesday morning class. I was introduced and welcomed to the group before Chris started with a ‘spontaneous writing’ exercise. Each week, a different subject/title is given to the group to work on. This was not a long exercise, just a short time limit, to get everyone in the mood. The title was ‘Lost in the Woods’. Everyone started to write, heads down, pens scribbling madly. As a first timer, I wasn’t quite sure that I had what it takes to be spontaneously creative, but I had a go all the same! When the time was up, everyone stopped writing and Chris chatted a little about the title and the many different possibilities it offered. She showed a selection of contrasting images from magazines which could
convey this theme. The members of the group took it in turns to read out their work. Not everyone shared their writing, but most did. There was no pressure to do so and certainly no criticism either. I really enjoyed listening; the quality of writing was very good indeed and everyone seemed to notice different things from each contribution. During this morning session, a few different subjects were covered in exercises of varying lengths, and the results produced laughter, some serious contemplation and even tears, following one member’s beautiful account of a special time spent by the sea with her dying father. My initial uncertainty about how to approach these tasks soon vanished, and although I’m not sure my efforts were quite up to scratch, they were warmly received. For more information about these lovely classes, take a look at Chris’s website : www.chris-leonard-writing. co.uk or give her a call on 01372 803995. I enjoyed my time with Chris and her group so much that I thought it would be nice to share some of their work with you in Look Local over the coming months. We start here with two pieces by class member Judy Perry.
Thank you everyone for making me so welcome.
A Valentine’s Tale ‘February is here. This year, can we, just for once, celebrate Valentine’s?’ Samantha sighed. ‘It’s all so artificial. Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparents’ Day. They’re all just marketing opportunities to part us from our money.’ ‘You old cynic.’ Justin wrapped his arms around her. ‘You weren’t like this when we met.’ ‘Twelve stone you mean?’ ‘No! You know I don’t mean that. You’re still lovely.’ He stroked her love handles. ‘See? I can still get my arms right round you.’ ‘Thanks for that.’ She extricated herself from his embrace. ‘Justin, if we must celebrate Valentine’s, and frankly I see no need to tell the world that we love each other, let’s at least do something for the community.’ ‘Like feeding the poor, or rescuing cats?’ ‘No, not like that. We could sell flowers cheaply. It’s a rip-off, what roses cost at Valentine’s.’ ‘Samantha, it’s February. We don’t have any roses.’ Justin peered out of the window. ‘Frankly, we have nothing in the garden but snowdrops, and not too many of those.’ ‘Justin, we have so much. Let’s give something back. We could offer our services for charity.’ ‘Services? What are you thinking?’ ‘Well, we could wash cars or sweep drives. Help people. Give a bit of pleasure.’ Helping people wasn’t really what Justin had in mind. He had already booked a table at Luigi’s, complete with a bottle of bubbly and a very expensive red rose. He decided to play along with Samantha and try to entice her there somehow. Samantha’s campaign to ‘help people’ took off. Justin found himself driving old men to the doctor, manning a bric-a-brac stall in aid of the homeless, baking cakes for the deaf and reading Shakespeare at an old people’s home (the latter was not very well received, as most of the attendees fell asleep). On February 14th, he finally protested loud enough for Samantha to listen. ‘I’m not doing this helping lark any more.’ ‘Oh Justin, you’re such a kind man. You can’t mean it.’ ‘I do. Tonight I want to have a lovely dinner with a lovely woman who deserves the best.’ He embraced her tightly. ‘I love you, Sam.’ ‘And I love you, and I love how kind you are.’ Which is why, that night, Justin was to be found at Luigi’s, as he had planned, sipping champagne with a large lady in a red knitted beret and wellington boots. She had come from the local homeless centre where Sam worked on Thursdays.

IS YOUR PRINTER G E T T I N G YO U D O W N ?
We hear frequently of users’ dissatisfaction with their printers, due to a number of common gripes, such as: they are too costly to run, too slow, don’t hold enough paper, are too fiddly, aren’t wireless.... the list goes on. Generally, there’s no such thing as a bad printer, but rather, one that doesn’t match your needs. With combined wireless printer/copier/scanners starting at £55.00, there is a massive array of choice at extremely good value. To achieve the best value from your purchase, ensure the printer has 4 or 6 (for true photo quality) separate ink cartridges. This enables you to replace the individual cartridges when they run out, rather than replacing a two-thirds full cartridge. The cost of the consumables is a major factor when selecting the best machine for you. The lower priced printers generally have smaller capacity ink cartridges, therefore greater running costs. If you are replacing your inks more than once a month, you probably have the wrong printer and are paying too much to run the printer. By way of an example, we have an Epson printer/copier/scanner for £55.00; the replacement black cartridge costing £9.00 will provide a page yield of 175 pages, therefore the cost is 5.1 pence per page. At the other end of the scale, we have an A3 Epson printer/copier/scanner for £200.00 (on special currently, down from £290.00); the replacement black cartridges cost £34.00 which will provide a page yield of 2,200 pages, therefore the cost is 0.64 pence per page. All information regarding cartridge yields was taken from Epson’s website on www.epson.eu/pageyield ....and yes, there is a standard European printed page!

CAR REVIEW
BENTLEY When you can afford to buy a legend of a luxury car for less than a week’s wages, & still have plenty change for the petrol, the temptation to indulge must be irresistible. Well, if you are a Premiership footballer, that is. And a millionaire to boot, as so many of them are nowadays. My view is evidenced by the parade of the Bentley Boys, otherwise known as the firstteamers, who pass by my house most mornings on their way to the Chelsea training ground at Stoke d’Abernon. They left me curious to discover what all the fuss is about over the daily transport favoured by the privileged, & a trusting dear friend let me borrow his Continental GTC to revel ohtoo-briefly among the elite. Now I fully appreciate what is meant by the wow factor & how a status-symbol car can excite your pleasure buzz zone beyond belief. Parking it outside a restaurant or hotel, for instance, triggers an embarrassing rush of attendants, but sparks a dangerous sensation of self-regard, too. Coping with that, & the intensity of stares,
glares & outright jealousy, becomes part of the pride of driving the ultimate in luxury on four wheels. Little wonder the £250,000 -a-week soccer heroes choose to commute from their £5m mansions in a hand-crafted motor definitely fit for purpose, if being seen to be a megastar is a priority. And it usually is with them. My trusting friend’s on-loan GTC was sheer, eye-catching beauty on the move, with a palatial interior of wood & luxurious leather & just about every touch-button gizmo, dial & read-out you could possibly desire. Despite its 2.5-tonne kerbweight, it drives & corners with perfect behaviour What isn’t there you can specify and Bentley will include it. At an extra cost, of course. With a parent company lsuch as
Audi, one should expect a level of reliability second to none &, my friend assures me that this is exactly the situation. He should know: he’s on his third Bentley. This one, he reckons, & I can’t argue, is the finest so far from the car’s up-north facility at Crewe in Cheshire. Demand is so high that the residuals should be copper-bottomed. But if you are money-bags who can afford it, who worries anyway? It may sound churlish, faced with such perfection, but I was a wee bit disappointed that the wind rush was so noisily invasive when the roof was up. And while there is plenty of space up front, the leg-room in the back is relatively sparse. As panache goes, the exquisitelycrafted, four-wheel drive chassis Bentley - fast, refined & as capable as can be - is personification proof positive. I was never more reluctant to hand back a car, but thankful I could without a scratch. And I never saw an owner so relieved to have his pride & joy returned in one immaculate piece.. Specification: The Continental GTC. Engine V8, BHP 500. Zero60mph 4.7 seconds. Top Speed 187 mph. Mpg 25.9. Price: £143.915. Don’t bother to haggle...

QUINOA & SWEET POTATO CAKES WITH COURGETTE ZINGY CRANBERRY & ORANGE SAUCE
M ET H O D IN GREDIENTS: 50g quinoa 150ml/ ¼ pint water 15g/ ½ oz coconut oil 1 onion, finely chopped 200g/7 oz vacuum packed chestnuts 1 sweet potato, peeled & coarsely grated (350g grated sweet potato) 1 medium courgette, coarsely grated 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley ½ tsp caraway seeds, dry toasted in frying pan Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper 1 - 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
ORANGE & CRANBERRY SAUCE: 200g fresh cranberries Zest and juice of 1 large orange 2 tsp stevia or raw honey
TO SERVE: Watercress Extra virgin olive oil
1. Place the quinoa in a small saucepan and add the water. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer over a low heat for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave to stand for 10 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. 3. Heat the coconut oil in a separate small pan, add the onion and sweat over a very low heat with the lid on for 20 minutes, or until soft but not coloured. 4. Whizz the chestnuts in a food processor until they look like fine breadcrumbs. 5. Mix the quinoa, onion, sweet potato, courgette, garlic, parsley and caraway seeds together and season with salt and pepper. Divide into 6 or 8, depending on size required, and shape into patties. Place the cakes on an oiled non-stick baking sheet and brush the tops with the melted coconut oil. Bake in the hot oven for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through and crisp (but not brown) on outside. 6. Make the sauce: Put the cranberries into a small pan with the orange zest, juice and stevia or honey. Gently bring to the boil and simmer until the cranberries start to burst. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Taste and add a little extra stevia if needed. 7. To serve: Toss the watercress with a little extra virgin olive oil in a bowl with salt and pepper. Arrange on individual slightly warmed plates with a sweet potato cake and the cranberry sauce.

GARDENING MATTERS
O
h thank goodness, Christmas is over for another year. I am soooo full, yuck, no-one mention turkey or pudding for at least another 12 months. So, here we go again with the meaning of plant names, this month with prefixes and what they signify. Stay with me here…..
Most specific names are made up of simple words, for example alba, meaning ‘white’. They stand alone next to the actual name of the plant, as in Cornus alba, the white dogwood. But there is also a group of compound words, comprising two parts, a prefix and another bit. Sometimes, the prefix is a number, plus a part of the plant. This is quite common: triphyllum, for example, is tri, meaning ‘three’ and phyllum, meaning ‘leaf ’, so ‘three-leaved’, as in Colchicum triphyllum, the three-leaved colchicum. Or less well-known, Elatine hexandra, a waterwort with six stamens, hex in Greek meaning ‘six’ and andra in Latin, meaning ‘having a stamen’. Other examples of number prefixes are uni (one-…..), bi/bis, (two…..), quadri (four-…..) and poly (‘many’, as in Lupinus polyphyllus, a lupin with many leaves). Most prefixes are either adjectives or adverbs indicating size or position. There is macro, meaning ‘large’ or ‘long’, seen in Aster macrophyllus, the large-leaved aster - also magnus and grandis, as in Magnolia grandiflora, the large flowered magnolia - and parvi, meaning ‘small’, where Cyclamen parviflorum is the small-flowered cyclamen. If you’re planning your garden and it is either huge or weeny, it’s handy to
know these, so that the plants are in proportion to the size of the garden. Position is also seen frequently: trans-, or ‘across’ in Latin means exactly that in Cotoneaster transcaucasicus – a cotoneaster which comes from right across the Caucasian mountains, hailing from Armenia/ Iran/Turkey. There is also super - ‘above’- and sub - ‘below’, as in subalpinus, ‘below alpine levels’, but while meaning ‘below’, ‘sub’ also means ‘partially/nearly/somewhat’: for example, subcordata means ‘slightly heart-shaped’ as in Prunus subcordata, a plum native to California, and subhirsutum means ‘somewhat hairy’, as in Allium subhirsutum, the hairy garlic. Finally, as we saw last month, sometimes the prefix is another plant: salix, meaning ‘willow’, is used in the name Pyrus salicifolia, a weeping pear, which has leaves like a weeping willow; hedera, or ‘ivy’, gives us Cyclamen hederifolium, the ivy-leaved cyclamen; laurus, an easier one to work out if you don’t know Latin, produces laurifolius, or ‘laurel-leaved’, seen in Cistus laurifolius, the laurel-leaved rock rose. Could it possibly be suffixes next time? Hmmmmmm? In the meantime, a very Happy New Year to everyone.

Through the many years of my career, I’ve interviewed thousands of notable artists, but for sheer fame and fortune, the extraordinary pairing of George Harrison and Michael Jackson tops them all. George, the quiet Beatle, released his self-titled album in ’79 and Michael Jackson, the greatest song and dance man the world had known, was getting ready to release his ‘Off The Wall’ LP, a major breakthrough, which would go on to become one of the most influential recordings ever. It provided a glimpse of the brand new direction that funk and soul music would take, with Michael Jackson as the standard bearer, with hits such as ‘Rock With You’, ‘Off The Wall’ and ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’. The album ‘George Harrison’ was recorded in Hawaii at a time when he married Olivia, became a father for the first time and was also a regular visitor to the F1 paddock when not in the recording studio. It was a time of great contentment for the former Beatle and it shows in tracks such as ‘Blow Away’ and ‘Love Comes to Everyone”. I recall the atmosphere being friendly and fun, and the picture brings back some very fond memories of my time at the BBC. A fantastic time then for me to have had the great privilege of interviewing two exceptional talents at the height of their creative powers.

BRA NOTICE
The Magnificent Trees of Bookham
T
his cedar of Lebanon is one of the very few magnificent trees remaining in Bookham, and is the very first tree listed on The Bookham Tree Trail 1, a walking guide around the great trees of Bookham. Bookham Grove House was built in the early 18th Century and the gardens were landscaped to include a number of cedar of Lebanon trees. The cedar of Lebanon which is today to be found at the intersection of Lower Road and East Street is considered to be one of these: the tree is thought to be approximately 170 years old. A few cedars remaining in Bookham Grove and the White Way area are even older, although some were lost in the Great Storm of 1987. Bookham has recently lost two magnificent trees off The Garstons, mature beech trees in South Bookham, a large fir in Pine Dean, and many, many more. Mature trees are intrinsic to the distinctive nature of Bookham. A love of the area is often influenced subliminally by the beauty of the natural tree cover. With the certainty of losing many more very tall trees to ash dieback, we need to do all we can to protect our remaining large trees. The beautiful 100 foot/30 metre ash trees in the pavement of the Lower Road near Eastwick Park Avenue are currently very healthy, but as ash dieback proceeds through the area, they are likely to succumb within 20 years. We have over 100 large ash trees in the streets and front gardens of Bookham alone which will be lost. There are many more in back gardens, on Bookham Common and in the Fetcham Downs. The loss is likely to run into thousands. With the intensification of housing in Bookham, homes are being built very close to existing mature trees. This has caused a number to be lost, since house
purchasers may feel that the trees give too much shade, or cause leaf & branch litter, or may be dangerous. All trees shed twigs & branches in high winds and gales; this is part of a tree’s own protection mechanism. It should be expected therefore that some branches will fall over a period of time. A home owner whose property contains mature trees, or mature trees growing nearby, has a certain responsibility to protect these mature specimens for their neighbours and for future generations. A 300 year old tree will have seen 10 human generations pass by, and as many trees only reach maturity at 400 to 700 years, will likely see the next 10 to 50 generations too, but only if we manage to protect them from the ravages of ‘civilization advance’. Bookham is also home to many ancient oaks - known specimens are between 600 & 800 years old, having therefore seen 24 generations of inhabitants. Surrey County Council and Mole Valley District Council have a duty of care which requires them to maintain healthy tree cover for the amenity of all. Trees on highways are inspected on a regular basis, and Surrey County Council is quick to remove any branches or trees which they consider dangerous. It would be a travesty to override this duty of care or flout the Tree Preservation Orders which are in place to protect our beautiful trees for future generations. We live just a few short years in comparison to these magnificent living organisms: we should do everything we can to cherish and protect them! The BRA has a committed team of tree wardens and if you would like to get in touch, please call our 24 hour message line 0300 030 8980 or e-mail via our web site: www.bookhamresidents.org.uk

ROTARY CLUB
Rotary Club of Bookham & Horsley: THANK YOU LOCAL PEOPLE! Rotary combines the opportunity to really make a difference in the local & wider community, whilst enjoying the company of like-minded friends. But we rely on the generosity of the wider community to make our efforts count. Over the last few months, we have held a successful bridge evening in support of the Alzheimer’s Society, and our ever-popular Bookham Brunch to support Combat Stress. Over Christmas, our local community has been ever generous in supporting Rotary fundraising with our around the houses sleigh, plus street and supermarket collections. THANK YOU EVERYONE! We can only help others with this tremendous continued support. So it was with great pleasure that Club president Ian Taylor made recent cheque presentations to these two main benefactors. Thank you again to the people of Bookham, Effingham and Horsley for making this possible. We welcome new member interest. Come and meet us for a trial evening! For information about The Rotary Club of Bookham & Horsley, visit
