MANOR HOUSE SCHOOL KIDS IN THE KITCHEN GARDENING MATTERS CROSSWORD BOOKHAM VILLAGE HALL
From the Editor
Happy New Year, Happy Valentine’s Day Happy Pancake Day & Happy Leap Year too... What a busy month it’s going to be, and one day longer too! As I write this, the predicted overnight temperature is -4 degrees! So far this year, it’s been extremely mild, extremely wet and now extremely cold and we’re only a few weeks in. Good old British weather, it keeps us on our toes, I guess. In this issue, we are delighted to share a selection of events: firstly, an evening at The Leatherhead Theatre, when I joined a packed audience to view the first public screening of ‘We Also Served’, a film based on the book ‘Bookham in WW2.’. The event was a resounding success and enjoyed by many. Our lovely recipe writer, Be Kassapian, recently won a very prestigious business award, see page 14 for more details. It’s very exciting and so well deserved. Congratulations to Be from team Look Local. Little Bookham Village Hall has received a little New Year make-over, and so I went along a few weeks ago to take a look around. This is such a lovely little hall and offers a wonderful array of facilities, suitable for a wide variety of social events. If you’re looking for a party venue, I highly recommend it! We also welcome a new Q & A feature, starting next month, from Bruce at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, so please do email in with your canine questions, see page 20 for details. I’m looking forward to reading this new feature over the coming months. Competition time again, and up for grabs is a delightful children’s storybook, ‘Cinnamon and the Bat People’, by Cookie Thomas (no relation!) This lovely story is aimed at the 9 years and above age range. We will announce the winners in the March magazine. Info within, good luck to all who enter. In addition to all this, you’ll find our normal regular features inside, plus a whole selection of other bits and bobs. I hope you enjoy exploring our pages. That’s enough from me for now, so I’ll sign off, I wish you all a great month,

he Leatherhead Theatre provided the perfect venue for a recent screening of a lovely local film, entitled ‘We Also Served’, which played to a packed house. It was inspired by the book ‘The Bookhams In World War II’ which was compiled by members of the Military History Group of the Bookham and District U3A. The film was produced by Bookham residents Dr. Farooq Beg and his wife Huma Beg. Both are international, awardwinning producer/directors, who between them boast an impressive repertoire of productions, including numerous projects on national and local TV channels such as BBC2, Yorkshire TV, ABC, STAR and the United Nations. It was not a surprise, therefore, to see that this film was beautifully put together, providing a wonderful memory of war-time Bookham. It is well shot and includes many familiar faces and places, with clever switches between modern enactments and real footage. Children from the Dawnay School played a great part in the production
and the film was clearly presented by well-known local resident, Michael Anderson. Since his retirement in 1988, Michael has played a huge role in the local community of Bookham and was a perfect choice to present this local record of events from WW2. As a way of marking the many different ways Michael has served the village over the years, a plaque was presented to him on the night. As well as this Keith Slark thanked Huma and Farooq Beg on behalf of the Bookham community and Mr Nick Skelleett, vice chair of Surry County Council presented plaques of gratitude to Roy Mellick and Michael Anderson. Look Local would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in the making of this lovely film. I do hope there will be more opportunities for screenings of it, and we will let you know of any future showings. Here we can see some photographs from the evening, which were kindly provided by Andy Carter, a local freelance photographer and member of Bookham Camera Club.

DON’T FORGET THEIR TEETH A NEW YEAR AND A NEW START.
Most of us will have spent January setting New Year’s resolutions, with a focus on health and fitness for us and our dogs. And while this is commendable, an area of dog well-being that is often neglected is their teeth. My own dog recently suffered from a cracked canine tooth which led to a visit to a veterinarian dental specialist and a few home truths. Like us, dogs should have their teeth brushed daily to protect and prolong them and help with the notorious ‘dog breath’ with which we dog owners are all too familiar! But it’s not all about fancy toothpaste and top-of-therange toothbrushes, it’s simply about frequency. In fact, brushing your dog’s teeth daily with just water will be more effective than a weekly or monthly session with an expensive toothpaste. Yes, really. So, when you’re brushing your teeth each day, please remember to do your dogs too: think regular, not random. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

WE HAVE RETURNED, & LO, IT‘S 2016, SO A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR As it’s February and I’m assuming it’s remained mild (erm, no. Ed.), we’ll go straight to pruning. My favourite job, especially savaging yellow shrubs. Pruning includes drastic tree lopping/tidying/ snipping out new growth, and here are 5 good reasons to prune: • To remove dead/diseased/damaged material • To shape • To encourage a healthier shrub by creating an open centre for air to circulate • To remove unnecessary parts so that energy is concentrated where it’s needed and growth is stimulated, usually from the dormant, outward-facing bud nearest the cut • To control the quantity of fruit/ flower by reducing the number of buds, as with tomatoes, grapes or prize chrysanthemums The golden rule is… if in doubt, prune immediately after flowering so that new growth and a ripening process can occur before the next flowering’s due. Generally, prune lightly in autumn and harder in spring, although foliage plants should always be pruned in spring. Before pruning, sharpen your tools and sterilise with a flame or surgical spirit, and make a clean cut with no jagged edges. With light pruning, relatively little is removed - 1 in 3 of the branches for forsythia/weigela/lilac/philadelphus/ climbing&rambling roses. Light pruning also involves shaping shrubs, eg ceanothus, after flowering, where you’re not aiming to reduce it to within an inch of
its life, but rather, to make its shape more pleasing and less random. Simply cut back to a growing bud. To encourage a plant to grow taller, prune its sides, whereas to increase its width/density/thickness, prune its top. Simples. Hard pruning involves the removal of much of the growth. Some shrubs become so overgrown, unsightly and old that they need pruning to 6” from the ground. You’ll miss out on 1 or 2 years’ flowering, but you may save a shrub otherwise doomed for the bonfire. Beech/laurel/privet all respond well to hard pruning, as does rhododendron, but be sure to give the latter an ericaceous feed. Cut buddleia and lavatera down to 6”-9” each year, and cornus to 3”. This apparently harsh pruning maintains shape, vigour, health, and with cornus, colour. Afterwards, the plant will suffer from shock, so rake away all debris, aerate the soil with a fork, apply a feed - Growmore, fish/ blood/bonemeal/pelleted poultry manure - hoe in, and water well. Some plants, eg conifers/lavender/santolina, shouldn’t be cut back to the brown, just back to a growing shoot or they’ll die. This pruning can still be quite drastic, but just be sure to cut to a leaf or flower bud/shoot. Variegated plants will eventually begin reverting to their original one colour, but if you cut out the reversions, you’ll prevent it reverting completely. There. All that cutting is very therapeutic. And all the prunings can be used for cuttings. Yaaay, free plants. Nature is wonderful.

RA I SE M O N EY F O R LO CAL CHILDRE N’S C HARITIES Fund-Raising Friends raises money for local children’s charities, and with the help of family, many friends and local business, 2015 proved to be a very rewarding one. In January, we held a very successful first Quiz Night with supper and raffle for the charity Reach, supporting children with upper limb deformities. In June, our annual summer lunch supported the charity Momentum, which looks after terminally ill children and their families. November saw Bocketts Gift Fair, kindly sponsored by the Gowing family, in the Old Barn at Bocketts Farm. There were several interesting stalls, a grand raffle and bric-à-brac stall, producing a wonderful result and some much-deserved funds for the Dorking charity MY TIME for young carers. In December, in partnership and with the kind permission of the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music and the exceptional
talents of their pupils, we organised a gala concert in aid of Cherry Trees, the charity which provides outstanding respite care for severely disabled children and young people. The evening was a magical one, the individual performances were outstanding and the school choir sang some beautiful carols, including the Cherry Tree Carol. The raffle, with some outstanding prizes, produced a record-breaking result. This year, we have raised over £10,000 for these four charities, but this would not have been possible without the support and sponsorship from many local businesses, our huge network of friends and family. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved. This support has ‘made a difference’ to many children’s lives. May we take this opportunity of wishing you all a very Happy Fund-Raising New Year.

ittle Bookham Village Hall is located in Little Bookham Street, adjacent to the entrance to Burnhams Road. Parts of the hall were originally a club room associated with the Fox beer house and date back to the early 19th Century. In the 1890s, Mrs Chrystie, a local resident and ardent temperance worker, bought the Fox beer house and converted it into three residential cottages now known as Pleasaunce Row. The club room and land associated with it were then donated by Mrs Chrystie to the village as a charitable trust. In the 1920s, funds were raised to construct a main hall attached to the old club room. This building then remained basically unchanged until the early 21st century, when the situation was reviewed by the trustees and a decision made to refurbish the whole structure. Extensive fundraising enabled the hall to be modernised by early 2007 and a store room added in 2008. Where the club room was located, the hall now has a well-fitted Paula Rosa kitchen with double oven, five ring gas hob, microwave oven, a fridge/freezer and a plumbed-in water heater providing constant hot water for tea or coffee. The kitchen also houses the gas boiler for heating all the rooms and providing hot water for washing up etc. The cupboards house crockery, glasses and cutlery for up to 90 people. Also, part of the old club room and next to the kitchen is another room the same size, about 3m (10ft) wide by 5m (16ft) long. Whilst this can be used for separate activities, it also serves as an area for parties where food can be laid out away from the main hall. The main hall is 6m (20ft) wide by 12.5m (40ft) long and has a fire exit at both ends. For seating at tables, the main hall will accommodate up to 90; for seating in rows, theatre style, it will accommodate up to 100 (set out with 10 rows of 10 chairs, including space for a 3m deep stage area). It includes an upright piano (tuned every year) and has a high ceiling which is tall enough to accommodate a bouncy castle. There are two high quality speakers at each end of the room, whilst around the room, there are four audio sockets allowing input
of sound into these speakers from portable devices, such as iPods or mobile phones. A sophisticated thermostat controls the temperature in the main hall, allowing each hirer their own temperature setting. Hence, keep fit prefers a temperature of 14c, whilst yoga has 20c. Our normal setting is 18c The main storage room has 13 large tables, 7 small tables, 100 upholstered chairs, 3 stepladders and adequate extension leads. A smaller storage room houses a sophisticated sound cabinet, including microphones and CD player. A projector and screen are available on request, as is internet access (including wi-fi). There are separate male, female and disabled toilets, as well as baby changing facilities. Outside, there is a secure lawn area and parking for 13 cars. There is disabled access to all areas. For those with internet access, the hall has its own website: www.lbvh.org. uk, which has a picture gallery showing many of the features of the hall. The hall can be booked in units of 15 minutes – minimum one hour. Regular bookings use up many of the time slots during the week, whilst weekend bookings tend to be children’s birthday parties and family parties, including weddings. At the time of writing, there are 20 regular users whose monthly bookings vary from 2 hours to 36 hours. Their range of activities include keep fit, Pilates, yoga, zumba, ballroom dancing, ballet dancing, tap dancing, Scottish dancing, belly dancing, theatre rehearsals, Women’s Institute, computer lessons, art classes, flower arranging, informal singing and table tennis. If you are interested in joining any of these activities, our Bookings Officer, Pat Tilley, on

number of residents have been concerned about the amount of litter that is sometimes scattered about Bookham, spoiling the appearance of the village and its surroundings. Several residents have been picking it up when they see it. Would you like to help keep our village and its surroundings looking attractive? You could help in a number of different ways: 1) You could “adopt” a road or part of a road and aim to keep your patch litter-free. 2) You could join a group of us on the first Sunday morning of the month, collecting up litter from various areas of the village. We will meet at the top of the High Street at 10.00am for an hour or two. Grabbers, gloves and bin bags will be provided.
T H E
Q U E E N
The first meeting will be on Sunday 6th March which will be part of a national campaign “Clean for the Queen”. Clean for The Queen is a campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in June 2016. Litter in the winter months is not as bad as at summertime. Even so, the attached main photo shows what can be collected during a 20 minute walk in the village just before Christmas. If you are interested in joining the litter pickers or have ideas for helping to keep the village looking attractive, please telephone the BRA on 0300 030 9890 and leave a message, or contact the BRA via the newly refurbished website: www.bookhamresidents.org.uk You can also register on the site to receive occasional e-mails from the BRA on village issues.

otary combines the opportunity to really make a difference in the local & wider community, whilst enjoying the company of good friends. We rely completely on the generosity of the wider community to make efforts count: we thank all local residents of Bookham, Effingham and The Horsleys for their tremendous generosity last Christmas, giving over £3,500 to benefit local charities and those locally in need. YOUR donations enabled the club to give to many local charities and individuals facing a tough Christmas. The Club’s most significant news is the very successful launch of our Satellite Group, for those wanting to engage with and contribute to Rotary, but with less time on their hands. This group does lots of talking online, with the emphasis on action. A first project, to overhaul Daniel’s Garden at the Dawnay School in Bookham (in memory to local schoolboy Daniel Strong), was successfully completed last November. Look out for many more practical initiatives in the pipeline. To find out more, see the Facebook page link below. Meanwhile, our main Club has had an active autumnwinter; some highlights include:
Chris Bishop
-
A great talk from long-time Club member and Polesden Lacey volunteer Chris Bishop, splendidly attired in full butler’s outfit. Chris gave us a fascinating insight to the world of Mrs Greville and her parties. - Applications for our second Gap Year Awards CLOSE END FEBRUARY. Students leaving school this summer after A levels should apply for funding towards any community-environment focused project during their gap year. Grant funds of £1,000 available. APPLY NOW! Full scheme details and an application from Paul Simonds – contact details below. - Coming up: Gala Music Evening Friday 8th April at the Barn Hall, Bookham. See local press and our website for ticket details. Thanks for your support! We welcome new member interest in either our main section OR our new “Community MAD” satellite group. B.R.A
B E C O M I N G A “COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE”:
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? A “private company limited by guarantee” is a type of company used primarily for non-profit organisations, such as clubs and membership organisations like the BRA. In Bookham, the BCA (which runs the Barn Hall and arranges Village Week), the Bookham Youth & Community Association (which runs the youth club opposite the Anchor pub), S.P.A.C.E. on Dorking Road, and the Bookham Tennis Club are all Companies Limited by Guarantee.
WHY DO IT?
The main reason for the B.R.A. to do this is to protect its members from personal liability for its debts. In exchange for this, the members (who become “guarantors”) promise to contribute a small amount (£1) in the unlikely event of the B.R.A. being “wound up”, i.e. ceasing to exist.
Other reasons for doing this: · It may make it easier for the B.R.A. to be given grants - sometimes grant-awarding bodies insist on this. · It brings a more formal method to the election of its Committee - there have been occasions in the past where the B.R.A. has been described as not democratic. The processes described in the Companies Act 2006 help to overcome this perception.
WHAT DIFFERENCES WILL YOU SEE?
Very few at first - until the A.G.M., that is, when the new methods of democratically reporting back to members, and electing the Committee, will come into effect.

WINDOW 10
U P G R A D E Last July, Microsoft launched its latest operating system, Windows 10. A key part of Microsoft’s launch strategy was to provide a free-of-charge upgrade to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 users for the first 12 months. Although figures are difficult to obtain, there are estimates of about 200-500 million users currently enjoying the benefits of the new operating system. Windows 10 is a good, solid, stable operating platform. It is very fast to operate, it offers good compatibility with existing hardware and software products and it has a similar appearance and function to the Windows 7, Vista and XP product family. If you are buying a new machine, we would recommend Windows 10 on the system. However, as an upgrade to an existing installation ,we generally have advised against the upgrade because of a small number of problems that have been encountered during the upgrade process. Since its release, there have been a series of significant upgrades which have resolved some of the earlier issues, and so we are now recommending taking the upgrade, unless there are very specific reasons why you would not wish to. Before you take the upgrade, we recommend you back up your data, and if you have any non-mainstream software programs, we would advise you check with
the software publisher about their compatibility before upgrading. Bearing in mind the significant number of installations, we have encountered a few issues, ranging from apparent loss of all user’s data, email programs not functioning, inbuilt devices such as wireless network cards failing to function, machines locking up, machines stalling halfway through installation. In all cases, the problems have been resolved without any data loss or functionality. There are a couple of “features” in Windows 10 which you may wish to disable, the most obvious one being Peer to Peer Updates or P2P updates. This is where your machine becomes a server to enable other Windows users to obtain their updates from your computer without your knowledge. This can slow down your system and consume your broadband allowance, whilst slowing down your connection. To disable this feature, go to Settings/Updates, then Advanced option, select “Choose how updates are delivered”, then slide the slider from default “On” to “Off”. If we were to install or upgrade to Windows 10 for you, we would automatically disable this option and others aimed at decreasing your privacy. Please call for more details about how we can upgrade your system.

Every March, thousands of people take to the streets to collect donations for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal. Marie Curie is calling for more volunteers to help them in 2016 by signing up to collect at one of the 100 collections across Surrey. Most shifts are for 2 hours and it’s a great thing to do with a friend or family member, as most places allow two people to collect at a time. Dogs are also welcome! The money raised will go to Marie Curie’s Nursing Service, providing hands-on care and emotional support
to people with any terminal illness in the comfort and privacy of their own home. Marie Curie provides this care free of charge, allowing people to spend their final days at home, surrounded by the people and things they love the most. It comes at a cost of £20 per hour to the charity. If you can help with collections, please get in touch with Emily Akeroyd on 01883 832642, email emily.akeroyd@mariecurie.org.uk or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil

PEUGEOT A R R E V I E W
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW PEUGEOT 308 GTi HATCHBACK
Looks, as the old saying goes, can be deceptive. And that could not be more apposite an adage than when applied to Peugeot’s 308 GTi Hatchback, the freshly-arrived French baby, devoid of teething problems. Wow! C’est magnifique! It may not revel in eye-poppingly spectacular kerb-appeal but, cor blimey, it is a rewarding experience from the moment you ease your derrière onto its bum-hugger seats in this ever-so-comfy hatchback and give it some stick. The response, especially if you really go for it, is a breathtaker reminiscent of any robust two-seater sports car shaped and built for performance and agility. The 308, outwardly a car with a familyouting/school-run appearance, and not at all threatening or looking like an open invitation for roadside speed cameras or traffic cops, is a reversion to fine tradition for the Gallic car maker. Remember the rather excellent 205s of the 80s, the transport for yuppies who yearned for performance without having the lolly to pay for a sporty flyer? Well, this latest five-door, low-slung presentation is a motor of that level of earlier excellence, expertise and
excitement, a recovery of oooomph and zip, and a surefire fightback on the extensive hot-hatch battleground. If I am coming across as overenthusiastic or as a suspect fan or victim of the Peugeot publicity machine, I apologise, but nothing could be further from the truth. My assessment is based solidly on a week of open and honest admiration for a car that gave me back all I asked of it and more. The speedo’s top end figure is 155mph - and I would guess it would reach into that promise if our road rules did not forbid such pace. As it is, it is electronically restricted, and its burst of relentless energy must remain a distant dream for the would-be racers. Whether you are skirting around town or streaking up our motorways, the 1.6-litre turbo-charged engine is your humble servant, obeying whatever heavy demands or otherwise that you impose upon it.The power seems to come from nowhere when you hoof it. In the deceptively roomy cabin, sport bucket seats, like home comforts, cope cosily with the longest treks, and the clutter-free dashboard with its multitasking colour touch-screen serves up all
the essential info. GTi trimmings abound, 19inch lightweight alloy wheels with low profile tyres, red-painted brake calipers with 380mm front discs, twin exhausts, and a GTi grrrrille. Throw in a reversing camera, parking sensors front and rear, cruise control, automatic folding door mirrors and an electric handbrake, and you are hard-pressed to think what else you might need. And the sheer generosity of deceptive space in the boot left Trophy Wife, an eager packer of a frock wardrobe fit for three, in a state of wideeyed gratitude as we headed for a partyfilled weekend. I am told that, when the hitherto heroic 205Gti was on offer in the UK from 1985 to 1994, it hit sales levels of 66,226. If that figure, despite opposition from, say, the Honda Civic Type R and the Seat Leon Cupra, is not beaten, then sacré bleu, buyers don’t know what they are missing. A real Purr-geot treat. The car that got the cream. Oh là là... Specification: Peugeot 308 GTi Hatchback. Engine 1.6T, 1598cc. BHP 2897. Max speed 155mph. 0-62 in 6.O secs. MPG 47. Price £28,155.

Moon song by Isabel Morris As the moon begins to rise, Clickety-clack of a back-door cat flap and Quick-release collar jingles, Herald freedom from captivity. Escaping too many clinging paws of domestic feeders, Ginger Tom stretches luxuriously and lingers, Delighting in the whoosh of nature, ruffling his whiskers. As the moon begins to rise, Grand Duke Fox squeezes under the gate of the sheep field. Majestic brush sweeping away the last dead leaves Clinging to winter hedges. Stealthily creeping, intensely amber wide, He’s seeking supper and a place to hide, Nestling away from howling winds. As the moon begins to rise, Scampering mouse scurries through the undergrowth, Dodging scattered crisp packets and discarded plastic bottles. She stops, stiffly Sniffing the billowing breeze, sweeping through her ears. Alert to a crackle of leaves And a familiar jingle, too close for comfort.

NEW YEAR, NEW YEW!
POLESDEN LACEY’S ‘ LO N G WA L K ’ I S D U E F O R M A J O R P RU N I N G WO R K The yew hedge that runs the length of the Long Walk at Polesden Lacey is due for major pruning work. Plans will reduce the size of the hedge and set it back from the path by several meters. The Long Walk is a grassy promenade that runs the length of the hillside with stunning views looking out across a gentle valley to the rolling Surrey Hills beyond. Over 400m in length, the promenade is framed by a carefully sculpted box hedge on one side and by the much taller yew hedge on the other. As the yew has flourished over the past decade, it has slowly begun to encroach upon the promenade. This has meant greater wear and tear on the turf area of the path itself and a restricted view down to the stone colonnade, losing the sense of drama offered by this majestic landscape feature. “We plan to cut right back to encourage dormant buds to leaf,” says Tony Gregory, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Countryside Manager. “Luckily, yew is one of the few evergreen conifers that regenerates through old wood. So, while it may look drastic at first, we anticipate that the hedge will show strong signs of regeneration by the end of the season in
60 Looklocal Magazine - February 2016
2016. Meanwhile, we’re allowing the turf a chance to recover and opening up that view once more.” The hedge, which runs for almost a third of a mile, will be trimmed by a tractor-mounted cutting blade. A core of garden volunteers will then lead a large-scale clearance operation to gather up the trimmings, which will then be chipped into compost and used across the gardens. The Long Walk will be re-opened to visitors again when the turf path has had sufficient time for recovery, which the garden team hopes will be as soon as Easter. Pruning the hedge is part of Polesden Lacey’s wider conservation management plan, which encompasses major work in the gardens, as well as out on the estate and in the house itself. The conservation management plan also includes the coppicing of over 10,000 m² of hazel and the clearance of 30,000 m² of holly on Ranmore Common. The Long Walk was originally designed in the early 19th century after the estate was bought by poet Richard Brinsley Sheridan in 1804. For more information about conservation at Polesden Lacey, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ polesdenlacey or call 01372 452048.

I was delighted to receive a call recently from a radio producer asking if I’d be available to interview The Corrs. “Haven’t they split up?” I wondered, but as the violinplaying vocalist Sharon told me “The Corrs never ended. Because even when we’re not in the band, we’re still the Corrs”. Sharon, who now lives in Andorra, has enjoyed a fair amount of success as a solo performer, but is delighted to be back in the limelight with her brother Jim and sisters Andrea and Caroline. They recently played in front of over 50,000 fans in Hyde Park and have just released a great new album, White Light, which is their first in ten years. As a group, they’ve sold in excess of 40 million albums, so when multi-instrumentalist Jim says “I have no doubt that this is our best record yet”, it’s worth checking out. Jim went on to claim that “the best of all of us is in this music”. At the heart of White Light lies the tragic loss of their father, Gerry, who motivated, inspired and supported the band from childhood. When he was suddenly taken ill in Dublin, the group supported him in hospital and later played at his funeral. Caroline said that it was an incredibly emotional time for them, and when they played at his funeral, it marked the first time they’d played together for 13 years. Andrea admitted that the experience brought them closer together because they were the only ones that have had this shared history and shared loss. Andrea went on to tell me that the album is certainly not a sombre affair. “There is defiance in the record rather than melancholy”. Andrea went on to say that there is a life-affirming feeling in the music, “bring it on, we can deal with it, because we’re here now and we have to”. To celebrate the release of White Light, they’re embarking on an 8 date UK tour in January and will play the O2 on Saturday, January 23rd . Lets’ hope that, in this case, the band that plays together stays together.

o, Christmas and New Year has come and gone. I hope that you all managed to enjoy the occasion and that 2016 will be a happy and positive year for you all. Some of you may have made some resolutions for the New Year? Also, many resolutions may have already been abandoned - or is that just me??!! One resolution I intend to keep in my work life, however, is to try to communicate appropriate, realistic and cost-effective crime reduction advice to as many people as possible. This column enables me to communicate with quite a lot of people - which is great, as I am always aware that internet access is not used by everyone across our communities. Yes, we do speak with the local press, and Surrey Police has also embraced the use of modern technology via Facebook and Twitter, but there is still a need for written communication, face-to-face and telephone contact. I am always happy to visit anyone who has any concerns about the security of their home, property and/or their personal safety. My direct telephone number is 01483 630809 and if I am not around to answer, please leave
me a message with your contact details and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you do use email, I can also be contacted at Neil.Clarke@surrey.pnn. police.uk During 2015, I was able to carry out over 180 home security surveys, only a few of which were for people who had actually been victims of a burglary. I often feel that, when I am asked to review security at a home that has actually been burgled, I am arriving “after the horse has bolted.” It is so much more positive to give advice and suggest things that can help deter criminals from targeting a home in the first place. I have also been able to give presentations and informal talks to several groups, including residents’ associations, victim support volunteers, local businesses and sheltered accommodation homes. Although it is impossible to measure if a crime has actually been prevented, I hope that this work has contributed in some measure to making Mole Valley the “safest” district within Surrey? It would be nice to think so! None of the advice I give is intended to increase the fear of crime. Rather, it is intended to help people to feel even safer in their own homes and communities.

Our local residents’ association, “The Residents of Middlemead Estate” known as ROME, is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer secretary to replace their previous secretary who is retiring. We are a volunteer group and take an active interest in everything affecting the Middlemead Road Estate and the surrounding area and have been running for sixteen years. Our aim is to help young and old alike and to improve and maintain standards on the estate. With the redevelopment taking place in Middlemead Road and Sole Farm Avenue, there is plenty of work for us to do. You will need to be able to take minutes and type them up and help the Chair and the committee with the general running of this residents’ association. We meet once a month locally and also hold one Open Meeting and one AGM each year at The Barn Hall. If you would be interested in joining us, please contact the Chair, Lin Hulford on 01372 801187 for further details
