Welcome BOOKHAM Summer! 21 to VILLAGE 27 DAY

Isn’t it amazing, that the little things we always took for granted, like inviting a few friends over for a meal or going out to eat, mean so much now? I enjoyed my first meal out the other day. We were lucky to pick a good day and so able to sit comfortably outside, and what a treat it was! Here’s hoping we can all enjoy a good summer of making up for lost time! It’s also really good to report that a number local events are starting up again and as a result we are able to include a few more each month. Of course, these could still be subject to changes, so please do check before attending any events if possible, to avoid disappointment. It has, in my opinion, been a particularly difficult year for the young adults/teens… so it was especially nice to hear from local student, Sophie Prestwich with some tips on choosing the right University. First hand experience is always worth taking into account, I’m sure her tips will be helpful to many… I expect many of our readers have heard about, or been on the receiving end of, the great work done by ‘Mid Surrey Community Fridges’ over the past year... this fantastic local initiative received some very well deserved recognition recently in the form of a Queens Award… we send everyone who has been involved our huge Congratulations, what an achievement! Bookham Village Day is planned to take place again this year, please see pages 26/27 for information regarding this much loved event. And a new event to also make note of too… ‘Bookham Food Festival’ is planned for September, details within. And finally, we were sorry to hear that Claire, June & Tracy were leaving Bookham Library for pastures new. Our thanks go to them for all their help to us & the readers of Bookham over the years. Sandra and Sarah are still there and will continue to welcome you We do, needthehelp all however, and help us spread wordplease! about the library! This month we asked Adrian, founder of Buy To Let Hunter, if he is still able to get a great deal for his clients who are looking to invest in property: “As a company who carefully curates and purchases accommodation for clients, we can see that house prices are clearly rising. The South East is currently increasing at a rate of 7.9% annually, which is actually ranking relatively low on the official countrywide chart - some areas have seen a 14% annual growth. The places we are sourcing for our clients are seeing 4-5% growth, which, we feel, is a good rate without creating a possible bubble. Slow and steady!” What about the potential oversupply of property and backlash as the market inevitably adjusts? “These areas we are buying in are generally protected against that, so whilst corrections might be possible in the market in general they are unlikely - or, I think, at the very least minimal in the right parts of the South East. I am sure that our instincts will prove correct, and I am quietly confident this gradual growth will continue and remain sustainable.” Are people’s pandemic fears impacting travel and bookings for the “serviced accommodation” and holiday lets this summer? “As lockdown starts to ease, we are thrilled to report that May has seen the highest occupancy so far this year: an astonishing 99.1%. We have also noted that the market is supporting slightly higher rental rates as well, so we are gently increasing ours in line with this trend. We have already seen a 10% increase and it’s continuing Advertising feature
to go up in June. As suspected, the boom for “staycations” is well established and our holiday home rates for the summer season are through the roof.” How are the projected returns for the serviced accommodation market? “While property prices have increased, we are still maintaining a healthy 10% ROI for our serviced accommodation clients. Finding the right properties may be harder, I am definitely having to work harder, but negotiating the right purchase prices is still possible. Nationally, 30% of real estate deals fall through; however with our no nonsense approach, BTLH has a better than 90% completion rate on properties at the moment - proving that great buyers are as important as a great price.” Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING A UNIVERSITY By Sophie Prestwich (local student)
It’s that time of the year again when some students start to think about applying for University. I am currently a second year psychology student at the University of Exeter and I remember going into the university choosing experience somewhat clueless. Open days are brilliant but they can be overwhelming so I have listed below some of my top tips surrounding University Open days and ultimately choosing a University that suits you!
the day to refer back to when you have seen all your selected Universities. The students will run the tours so ask them anything! They were in your position once too and there is truly no such thing as a stupid question.
1)
5)
Research and book the open days well in advance. Finalise your top 3-5 universities and look on their website for open day dates; although they are free they might require a ticket for you and your guardians to attend.
2)
Allow enough time to go around the campus and the local area. If you can, get to the university campus at the beginning of the day, it’s good to have plenty of time. Also have a look around the city or local area. You might be living off-campus in the second and third year, so work out if it is somewhere you can actually imagine yourself living.
3)
Take photos, go on the tours and ask questions. Take plenty of photos on your phone throughout
18 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2021
4)
Look at more than just the course. There is a lot more to University life than the course you choose. Look at the sports facilities, societies, nightlife and study spaces too! It might not be love at first sight! Everyone says “You can feel it in your bones when you see the University that’s right for you”. But to be honest that wasn’t the case for me and that’s okay too. It might only be upon reflection of all the open days that you decide the university that’s best for you, or it might take discussions with friends, teachers and family, just don’t feel under pressure to know straight away.
6)
Ultimately find the things that YOU like and that get YOU excited. After all it is you that will be a student for 3 or more years. I hope these tips help you on your way to feeling excited about open days and starting your university journey!

MID SURREY COMMUNITY FRIDGES RECEIVES THE QUEEN’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE
Mid Surrey Community Fridges (MSCF), a group of volunteers based around Dorking and mid-Surrey, has been honoured with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. MSCF was formed in 2017 to divert as much good food from landfill as possible, by making that food easily available to anyone who wants it. Now operating from eight sites across Surrey, each week MSCF distributes around 7.5 tonnes of food and welcomes around 500 people to take a bag of groceries and fresh produce. This award recognises the 136 generous, committed and hard-working volunteers who maintain a complex logistic system to collect food from supermarkets and other sources and distribute it. In particular, MSCF’s response to the Covid pandemic, when it worked closely with local agencies to deliver food directly to people in urgent need, was a factor in this award. Clare Davies, Founder and CEO of MSCF said “Our volunteers are the very heart and soul of Mid Surrey
Community Fridges and I am thrilled that they have been recognised with this award. It is their enthusiasm, kindness and selflessness that has enabled us to help some of the most vulnerable through the most testing of times. “Saving good food from going to waste is our passion and being able to reroute that food to make a positive contribution in the community is a real privilege; we are always bowled over by the messages of thanks we receive, from those who may have tried something new for the first time or who simply enjoy the sense of community that a visit to a Fridge provides.” Mid Surrey Community Fridges is one of 241 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations remains high year on year, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. They include volunteer groups from across the UK, including an inclusive tennis club in Lincolnshire; a children’s bereavement charity in London; a support group for those living with dementia and their carers in North Yorkshire; a volunteer minibus service in Cumbria; a group supporting young people in Belfast; a community radio station in Inverness and a mountain rescue team in Powys. Representatives of Mid Surrey Community Fridges will receive the award crystal and certificate from Michael More-Molyneux, Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey later this summer. Furthermore two volunteers from MSCF will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2022 (depending on restrictions at the time), along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

BOOKHAM VILLAGE
DAY 2021
Come and enjoy Bookham Village Day on Bank Holiday Monday 30 August. After last year’s traditional event in June had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, a smaller event with no parade is being organised so everyone can get out again and have some fun. From mid-day in the field behind the Old Barn Hall in Church Road there will be stalls, sideshows and games, refreshments of all kinds including an even bigger open air bar with a great selection of real ales, Taste of Texas hot food, Manteo’s ice cream and lots of music including Band from the Pub. A children’s fancy dress competition with a nursery rhymes theme will take place in the arena at 12.30pm, just turn up and take part. Group entries are also welcome. Other attractions so far include the ever popular small animals from Bocketts Farm which the children can pet, and Village Day favourites Punch and Judy. While this year’s event could be affected by new

government restrictions organisers Bookham Community Association hope it will be a great day out for everyone to meet up and enjoy themselves. Chairman Keith Slark said: “We couldn’t go ahead with Village Day on the original date in June because of restrictions but wanted to bring back some form of Village Day to celebrate being able to get back together again. And by delaying till August hopefully social distancing will be long gone”. “But we do need help. A group of friends who could run the bric-a-brac stall or the popcorn, candyfloss and drinks stall. If you could lend a hand at any time during the day it would be a great help”. Please contact Keith at

Scams, scams and more scams We have recently seen an increase in problems relating to email account passwords not being accepted. When we heard a worrying statistic that over £2b was stolen in UK scams last year. Yes £5.48m per day, £228,310 per hour or £3,805 per minute- just think about that for a moment….. It is not surprising that almost every day we hear of a new scam. Something purporting to be from one of the big tech companies like BT, Microsoft, Amazon, Virgin Media to name but a few examples. There is also an emerging cluster from delivery companies and government bodies like the tax man, who all apparently want to resolve the problem you didn’t know you had. The motive of the scammer is always the same- to gain access to your bank account, and/or your credit card details. Their approach appears to be consistent - they have detected a “problem” with your internet connection or, computer/ parcel delivery/ tax refund and you can help them confirm the problem, then they can solve the issue. Our advice at this point is to interrupt the scammer and suggest you will investigate the problem yourself. In some cases the caller will become quite persistent that they will resolve the problem for you, but you need to remain resolute and say you will investigate the problem yourself and hang up the phone. NEVER allow them to connect to your computer, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Because of the way the phone system works, there is a possibility that if you picked up your telephone receiver shortly after stopping the scammers call, they may still be connected to your line. To overcome this we would advise you to not use your phone for the next 10 minutes- this will force the line to disconnect from the last call, then you can make an outgoing call. Should you feel concerned about the problem you have been alerted to and wish to pursue the matter, firstly ask yourself: • Why would XXX (lets say Virgin Media) be calling me? • Do you have a Virgin Media service? • Would they have your phone number? (It is very unlikely that Microsoft would know it) Below we have listed below some useful contact numbers of the legitimate companies who supposedly has just called you, so that you can check the calls authenticity yourself.

If the scammer has connected to your machine they may have installed some software which will enable them to access and control your computer without your permission. We have also seen some scammers install malicious software which will delete your data in 7/14/21 days after the hack. Should you have any concerns we can ensure your computer is free from any unwanted software. The government have setup a website on this subject which is https:// www.actionfraud.police.uk/ Should you have any ongoing concerns please feel free to call or drop into the store for further information.

HOME WANTED! Jack Frost
Could you offer Jack Frost the home he needs to continue his journey to a happy ending? If so please get in touch on 0345 260 1387 or adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk
Jack Frost is male tabby who is approximately 1 year old. He was found living as a stray and unfortunately despite our best efforts we were unable to locate an owner. He was very shy when he first came into care but is growing in confidence every day. Jack Frost needs to be an only pet in an adult only, calm home with direct access to an enclosed, safe garden for him to explore, in a quiet area. Despite being shy he has been well socialised at some point as once he gets to know you, he loves a cuddle and is learning to be brushed. He enjoys his food and play has been a very important part of his development; his favourite toy is his toy ribbon which he loves to chase - although it can be a little difficult to get it back! Bookham Wine Club
While holidays in Europe may be on hold, we can still enjoy their wines. Italy was the destination for BWC’s June Garden Meeting when members met to continue their excursions to holiday destinations currently on the Government’s ‘stay away’ list. While the wine club is unable to hold its traditional monthly wine tastings, getting together in groups of six is proving to be popular, and the next best thing; a step up and away from our old friend ’Zoom.’ Apart from enjoying the company of fellow members and friends, a trio of famous Italian wines were available to taste. The afternoon commenced with a glass or two of ‘thirst quenching’ fizz - it just had to be a Prosecco, of course - but a very good one; this was followed by a refreshing, mineral white Gavi; and to complete the

tasting, members enjoyed a fruity, medium bodied Chianti. These excellent wines were provided by Vine King in Reigate. Their first, but not their last ‘visit’ to Bookham Wine Club. Similar events are planned for July and August with ‘visits’ to Spain and Portugal; and then in September meetings will return to The Old Barn Hall when we welcome back our wine professionals to entertain us to taste and learn about wines from around the world. If you would like to join us as a guest at one of our meetings, you’ll be most welcome. Just visit www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or email: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk

Seat LEON CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
Spanning countless years, the Seat Leon has been humbled in its class by the slicker, snappier Volkswagen Golf. The German charmer has been a perennial champ, great value and a thoroughly rewarding return for your hard-earned lolly. Not any more….! It has, in my humble opinion, been overtaken by the vastly improved and talented Seat Leon, a real whizzkid of a car in an ever-popular class, great for family, and ideally suited to newcomer drivers who do not have a fortune to spare. Please don’t get me wrong: I don’t mean the Golf is not still a super-duper car, a comfy cruiser and amongst the most economical to run with an interior to delight and the only motor with a height adjustable boot floor to swallow up that extra shopping burden. So what is it about the updated and uprated Leon that has suddenly made it a worthy match and a serious opponent of the long running Golf, and for that matter any other car in the jam-packed weenier hatchback class? Over the years the Leon struggled in the wake of Golf, always a fine car but it had to rely on a smaller price tag to get anywhere near the VW’s reputation as a perennial champion and family favourite.
42 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2021
For me, it now commands the strongest pace with superb and ultra-safe handling, ample rear space for the family or friends and, by far, the finest, most handy and refined set-up in total. It changes pace and direction with ease, grips hard and stays neatly balanced through fast corners. The majority of car test pros like me are in full agreement that this Leon is a real winner, even in the face of excellent challengers and consistent leaders and favourites like the VW Golf and the Ford Focus. Whether you are involved in a wearisome daily commute to the office in a nose-to-tail crawl, or taking on the challenge of an arduous trek to the far reaches of the country, the lively Leon copes with hardly any effort - and keeps you posted with an infotainment system to be envied. In short it is a benchmark for complete driving satisfaction, and fun without edging you towards bankruptcy. A target price of around £22,940 is at least £1,000 cheaper than its two main rivals. As a thoroughly rewarding return, it would top out at 134 mph, if there was anywhere you would be allowed to do it and it would speed you from zero-60mph in 7.7 seconds - and give you 48.7mpg. I don’t know what more you could want...

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
CORSETS AND CAMERAS In the Society’s May lecture on Zoom, JANE LEWIS of Surrey History Centre used photographs from the 1860s to the 1920s to illustrate how clothing fashions developed for both sexes. She explained that people would wear their best clothes when posing for photographs yet these might last for 20 years or more, trimmed with new collars and cuffs, and were often out of date, particularly for less fashion conscious older people. A photo taken in 1885 showed an older lady seated before three other women, the younger two wearing fashionable clothes and hats. The fourth lady, also older, wore clothes from the 1870s while the one seated wore clothing fashionable in the 1850s and 60s. A second photo depicted a wedding in 1903, one occasion when bride and groom might wear new clothes. In this case a newspaper report said the bride wore cross lace and the bridesmaids carried crooks and wore soft cream satin dresses with shoes and sashes of emerald green. A photograph from the late 1860s showed a woman wearing a crinolette, a smaller version of a crinoline. Both were designed to be worn beneath a petticoat but this woman, a housemaid, had none and had probably borrowed the outfit from the photographer. Crinolines were widely worn over full sleeves. Hair was tied back into a smooth bun at the base of the neck and covering ears. Then the style changed and instead of the bell shape, the fullness switched to the back. But fullness was still considered necessary to make the waist look smaller so crinolines were replaced by bustles in the Ladies 1885
1870s with ruffles and trimmings. Women’s bonnets resembled hats except for the ribbons tied under the chin. They had a flowerpot design with elaborate feathers and trimmings. A photo showed women playing tennis in such hats and also wearing very tight corsets. One also had a very high collar. Such collars came in during the 1880s, influenced by Alexandra, Princess of Wales, who wore them to disguise a scar on her neck. Men’s clothes changed much more slowly. Dandies of the earlier 19th century gave way to men who simply looked respectable, rather than fashionable. Styles for tying cravats developed through the century but only military clothing could be used to accurately date a photo. High turnover collars were worn but neckties grew wider. Frock-coats became single breasted over waistcoats that sometimes had lapels. Eventually, matching three-piece suits were introduced, at first considered avant garde. In many earlier photos, tall stovepipe hats were probably borrowed from the photographer to denote gentility. Bowler and soft felt hats eventually came in various shapes and flat strawChildren 1885
boaters were worn for yachting and other sports. Young children of both sexes wore dresses until four or five years old, but boys tended to have less frilly clothes while girls were shown holding a doll or bunch of flowers. Boys might have books. In the 1920s, fashion changed with the advent of romper suits. For more on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Great British
SPRING CLEAN in Bookham
24 people assembled at Lower Shott on Sunday 6th June to collect litter, as part of Bookham’s contribution to this year’s event organised by Keep Britain Tidy. The volunteers went to various locations in Bookham in search of litter and returned with a total of 18 bags. Keep Britain Tidy requested groups to submit the total time spent by individuals collecting litter and were hoping that the total for the country would exceed a million minutes. The total for this event was 1,404 minutes. Prior to the lockdowns, litter picks were held monthly. The June 6th event was the first held since March 2020. Since the monthly litter picks were no longer taking place during Lockdown, the concept of Wombling was introduced, inspired by the Wombles of Wimbledon Common, who collected litter. Individual volunteers in the Bookhams borrowed equipment and have collected litter in their local area on a regular basis. The Womblers have done a fantastic job and the amount of litter around the village has noticeably decreased. Wombling

continues and the time spent by the Womblers during the period allocated for the Great British Spring Clean, 28th May to 13th June, will be added to the total from our pick on June 6th and submitted to Keep Britain Tidy. We plan to continue meeting on the first Sunday of each month, Covid permitting, the next being July 4th. We meet in Lower Shott car park at 11 am. Tools and safety equipment are provided, and new members are always welcome. For further information email: litterpicking@bookhamresidents. org.uk or the BRA website: www.bookhamresidents. org.uk I’d like to thank all our wonderful Womblers for all they are doing to help make our lovely villages look good. Also many thanks must go to all the support team, especially those who spent hours working on the Covid Risk Assessment to make sure our pick complied with Government Guidelines. Margaret Lawson

What is a Designing Out Crime Officer? NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
Apart from being a somewhat ungrammatical job title, there is quite a lot of confusion about what this role actually entails. In part, this has come about because different police forces use differing names and job titles for the same thing! For example, in Surrey my colleagues and I used to be known as Crime Reduction Advisors (which we still are), whereas in Sussex and other forces around the country, the title was Crime Prevention Officer. Over the years, there have been other variations on the theme such as Crime Prevention Design Advisor and even Architectural Liaison Officer!! So finally, a decision was made nationally to standardise the name across all forces and the term Designing Out Crime Officer (or DOCO) was chosen!! Suffice to say that I now I have to spend time explaining what I actually do but – in a nutshell – I’m all about preventing or deterring crime before it can take place. If it has taken place, then my job is to try to suggest ways to deter further attempts into the future. Obviously, much of my focus is on helping people to make their homes and property more secure but I am also involved in working with planners and developers in the design of new developments, helping to “design out” the opportunity for crime at the earliest possible stage of the process. If possible, I will encourage developers to consider applying for Secured by Design accreditation, which is a national police approved standard and enables me to be involved throughout the whole development process. Working in partnership with other agencies to address community concerns about crime “hotspots”

or incidents of repeated anti-social behaviour is also a key part of what a DOCO does. Sometimes it takes the involvement of several interested groups to bring about changes that result in an improvement but the process is all about addressing community concerns and long-standing issues and coming up with workable, practical and cost-effective solutions. A good example of partnership working of this kind, which resulted in significant changes, was at the Chrystie Recreation Ground in Bookham. Incidents of underage drinking, anti-social behaviour, drug use and criminal damage have decreased significantly since a complete refurbishment of the “club house”, additional security measures and improved lighting were implemented. It wasn’t an overnight success but, over time, a long-standing problem has diminished considerably. The way we get to know about local concerns and issues is when people report them, either to police or to the agency responsible, such as the local council. For example, we are currently working with the local council, councillors, local residents and other agencies in trying to “design out” crime at a number of locations throughout Mole Valley. This has only been possible due to the people who are being affected taking the time and trouble to report their concerns. Apart from calling 101 to report any ongoing concerns and issues to police, it is also easy to report any incidents online at the Surrey Police website www.surrey.police.uk - and it is even possible to submit an online report anonymously. The website is monitored constantly by the same team of people who respond to emergency calls to police.

BOOKHAM LIBRARY
The theme for this year’s popular Summer Reading Challenge is Wild World Heroes and has been developed in partnership with WWF UK. This year’s Challenge will be a celebration of reading, nature and action for the environment. Wild World Heroes will inspire children to stand up for the future of our planet. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to set themselves a reading challenge to help prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. Each year the Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency & delivered by libraries, motivates children to keep reading to build their skills & confidence. Children have to be a library member to take part, but participation is completely free, & they can collect special stickers & rewards along the way. The aim is to read up to 6 books, & children can read whatever they like from Surrey Libraries’ excellent range, including eBooks & eAudiobooks. This year the Challenge will be available both online & in our libraries from 10th July.
