to June!

As we step slowly towards summer and slowly out of lockdown, we’ve experienced a mixed bag of weather this Spring haven’t we! Snow, wind, rain, frost and beautifully sunny days too! Let’s hope that June brings us some settled sunny days! My tomato plants, lettuces, radishes, sweet peas and nasturtiums are now planted in the big outdoors and I’m looking forward to enjoying the ‘fruits of my labours’ in a few months time. If the weather obliges I’m sure the barbecue season will be a busy one this year; it will be so good to get together with friends and family that we have not seen for some time! And with Father’s Day on Sunday 20th June I’m very sure many will enjoy some family time then. Finally things are really starting to feel normal again, not quite back to how they were, but certainly on the way! I moved house in early 2020 and most of my friends and family haven’t been able to visited yet, so it will be lovely to welcome them soon! Given the relaxation of more lockdown rules, we are happy to include a selection of local events this month. It’s obviously been a difficult time to plan events, so it will take a little while still for groups and organisations to provide details of more, but we will do out best to keep you informed over the coming months! Slow but sure... Wishing you all a happy & healthy month ahead, Until next time,

Ros

WE’RE BACK! Do come & join in this annual event where typically over 700 people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way.

BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS DAY

Sunday 27th June, 10am – 5pm

This year we expect to feature around 15 varied and attractive private gardens and we have seven new ones to share with you. We will be joined once again by Little Bookham Allotments and The Grange’s Walled Garden. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid June from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. As you walk between gardens, do look out for beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a road verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall, and over the years we have raised over £65,000. We are planning to serve our normal delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks throughout the day at the Hall but our exact offering will be decided nearer the time depending on restrictions in place at the time. Who knows, it might be refreshments al fresco. Plants should be available to buy at the Allotments, The Grange and some of the gardens. Tickets on sale from 15th June: £7 in advance from

the outlets below. Children u16 - free. Wheelchair users £5, carers free. Include admission to all gardens and a programme with details/map. Regret no dogs other than assistance dogs. Sorry no minibus service this year. • The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd, Effingham (event sponsors) • Wishing Well, 7 High Street, Bookham • Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade, Leatherhead Rd • Old Barn Hall office, Church Rd, KT23 3PQ. This month Buy to Let Hunter are chatting to Melinda who lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself: What were you hoping to achieve? Melinda explains that asking Buy To Let Hunter to manage her flat in Richmond as a short term serviced accommodation makes sense whilst she is spending time abroad. “I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe hold in London, but it was a purely commercial decision to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live somewhere else.” She explains that she didn’t think too much about traditional pensions during her working life; instead, she mostly invested in properties in the 80s and 90s where she could afford them and by default she now relies on that rental income in her retirement. BTLH can help you find the perfect pad to set up as a serviced apartment, too.

Why did you choose BTLH? Melinda explained “The onset of Covid caused a dearth of options in the lettings market. The world has changed in rental terms.” Melinda spoke to the agents who used to handle her property and found their model no longer really fit for purpose, for her anyway. “I needed shorter lets so I can come and go from time to time.“The BTLH model is flexible and more cost effective for her needs: “The old agents were proposing a 25% charge on any rental income and then a range of expenses that add up to £500-£600 for every letting!” They were billing her for inventory and administrative costs which seemed to be in addition to the fees she was already paying. Advertising feature

“It’s one thing if you are having lets of a year or more, but it really didn’t make sense for the shorter term serviced accommodation model that I needed.” She explained. Melinda was also unsure about the due diligence when the agents took references for her tenants as they always seemed to be outsourced – “BTLH have a much more personal and less algorithmic approach!” she laughed – ah yes, I smiled, the advantage of having a very small office!

So, Melinda, what has your experience been working with BTLH? “It’s been very good!” she explained from Switzerland where she was locked down up a mountain. A lot of her girlfriends who got in to “buy to let” are local so don’t need to rely as heavily on management as Melinda does. “I can trust you to make the right decisions and it helps finance my lifestyle whilst retaining flexibility. I feel the security of knowing I have a bolt hole but can’t afford to just leave the asset standing.” Fancy a bit of a nomad retirement like Melinda? Get in touch and the Buy to Let Hunter team can find you the perfect pad. Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. HAMPTON COURT PALACE GARDEN FESTIVAL

Highlights Announced for the return of the UK’s Biggest Garden Festival

The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival supported by Viking will be back to transform the grounds of Hampton Court Palace from 5 - 11 July. Following the resurgence in gardening across the nation in 2020, the UK’s biggest festival of flowers will focus on gardening for everyone and celebrate all things ‘grow your own’ as the nation welcomes back outdoor events. After the huge increase in people growing their own produce, 2021’s Festival will introduce the RHS Allotment area providing tips, advice and information on all things ‘grow your own’. Festival-goers will be able to attend talks and practical demonstrations throughout the week and get growing inspiration from allotment plots built by community groups and grow your own experts. The festival continues to highlight key issues and environmental challenges within the Global Impact Gardens category. Global Garden - Game Over? by designer William Butterworth will raise awareness of climate change, featuring charred trees, burnt ground and interactive stepping stones as it hopes to inspire visitors to take action. Meanwhile Tracy Foster will focus on issues of plastic pollution in our gardens,

canals and rivers, depicting a large floating bottle with plants to represent the species used to make natural alternatives to plastic. The Floral Marquee supported by St. James’s Place Wealth Management will be brimming with plants from nurseries from all over the UK with an array of species and cultivars, including first time exhibitors Alchemy Ferns and Kells Bay House and Garden. Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants who have exhibited at every RHS Hampton Court since its very first show will take centre stage as Master Grower and visitors can immerse themselves in some of the finest roses in the Festival of Roses. Rebecca Welti, RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival Manager, says: “We are thrilled to be able to bring the festival back to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. It is the garden festival for everyone; it provides so much inspiration for avid and new gardeners alike with lots of exciting displays and plenty to get involved in, all within the beautiful setting of the palace.” For further information on the gardens and exhibitors or to buy tickets, please visit the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

‘I SHALL NOT BE LONG AWAY’ Military history researcher ANDREW TATHAM gave a moving Zoom talk in April based on the letters of Lt Col Charles Bartlett, second in command to Andrew’s great grandfather, Brig Gen William Walton, on the Western Front from August 1915 to March 1917. The letters home to Bartlett’s wife were largely uncensored and full of incident, described with directness and bluff humour. They all appear in Andrew’s second book entitled I Shall Not be Long Away - a quotation from one letter - which followed his first book, A Group Photograph Before, Now and In Between. Both books were inspired by a single photo from the Imperial War Museum showing the 8th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment during training on Salisbury Plain in May 1915. Andrew researched the fates and lives of every man in the photo - 46 in all. Over half were either killed or injured in battles. He contacted relatives of all 46 and researched their family trees. Of those shown, only Andrew’s ancestor was a regular soldier at the outbreak of war. Others included businessmen, students, and lawyers, as well as a vicar, a teacher, an artist, and a poet and critic. Among them were the sons of an explorer, a tobacconist’s traveller, the first Bishop in Persia, a biscuit factory machinist, an egg merchant, a gardener’s labourer, and a physics professor. Some had travelled from across the empire to fight for Britain. Only 21 survived the war and some had their lives Andrew Tatham

20 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

shortened as a result of injuries. By the end of the war, none of the men in the photo were serving in the field. They had either been killed, relinquished their commissions, or been posted to other units. Andrew went as far as South Africa to trace Bartlett’s family and eventually located a relative who provided no fewer than 341 of his wartime letters. He was among those who survived the war. Two who did not were William Hobbs and William Bissley, killed respectively at Loos and the Somme in September 1915 and August 1916. Hobbs, a solicitor, was never recovered. His parents commissioned a stained glass window in his memory in Richmond Presbyterian Church. Bissley had recently married after working to improve his social standing with his bride’s family. After a two-day honeymoon and a second brief leave, he had returned to the front and his death as his wife was going into labour. Andrew met Bissley’s daughter and overcame her reluctance to discuss the father she had never known. Her own daughters later visited him with a letter about their lost grandfather.

8th Royal Berkshires May 1915

Donald Stileman was mentioned too by Bartlett, injured first at Loos and then losing an arm on the Somme. But unlike the others he survived the war and went on to have a long and successful family life and working for the Forestry Commission. He died aged 94 in 1989. His gravestone in Hampshire reads: ‘Greatly Loved, Man of the Trees’. For more on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR GARDENERS IS ONE GIANT LEAP FOR wildlife! Frances Tophill, BBC Gardener’s World presenter, supports Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new wildlife gardening survey Bug hotel - Surrey Wildlife Trust

Frances Tophill author and BBC Gardener’s World presenter is supporting Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new online wildlife garden survey. Anyone can take the survey, from complete beginners to advanced gardeners, and in just a few minutes find out how their garden scores for wildlife. The quick and easy online survey measures gardens on five essential features: food, shelter, water, connectivity between gardens and natural solutions. The survey shows that every type of gardener, from those with small gardens to large, can take simple steps to help restore wildlife in their street. Frances Tophill said: “The survey shows just how easy it is to encourage more wild & wonderful creatures into gardens. If we step back & do a little bit less in our gardens, we can do so much more for declining insects & wildlife. Less mowing. Less weeding & more thought about how our gardens connect to the wider landscape. It’s that easy to help wildlife thrive.” Surrey Wildlife Trust’s number one tip is to just add water to your garden. Then leave a patch of your garden to grow wild with weeds and long grass. Taking part in #NoMowMay is one of the best things gardeners can do to help wildlife flourish. Give the lawn mower a rest for a month and the longer grass will soon become a rich habitat for insects and spiders which the birds will love too, hopping around to find tasty insect snacks.

Claire Gibbs, award winning principal ecologist at Surrey Wildlife Trust and judge for Gardener’s World Garden of the Year Awards for 2021, said: “New this year in the survey is a whole section on connectivity, focusing on the importance of wildlife being able to move around both within your garden & using neighbouring gardens as stepping stones to travel down entire streets. “Creating street wide wildlife groups to encourage wildlife gardening & maybe some wildflower sowing on road verges is fun & builds a great community spirit. Everyone will enjoy the beautiful array of flowers & even more importantly it will enable wildlife to move & thrive.” The Surrey Wildlife Trust wildlife gardening survey can be shared on social media & WhatsApp groups to encourage famly, friends and neighbours to join in so they too can welcome more wildlife to their streets. Why not share seeds, cuttings, wildlife gardening tips or even create a wildlife gardening group in your street? Take the survey at www.surreywildlifetrust.org/ wildlife-gardening-survey and download your free beetle and action for insects guide. Surrey Wildlife Trust is offering an opportunity to find out more about wildlife gardening online, by email and also with a programme of free online talks on wildlife gardening from beginners to advanced gardeners. LITTLE BOOKHAM VILL AGE HALL RE-OPENING ON 21ST JUNE 2021

LBVH is located in Little Bookham Street adjacent to the entrance to Burnhams Road. Parts of the hall were originally a club room associated with the Fox beer house and dating back to the early 19th Century. In the 1890s, Mrs Chrystie, a local resident and ardent temperance worker, bought the Fox beer house and converted it into three residential cottages now known as Pleasaunce Row. The club room and the land associated with it were then donated by Mrs Chrystie to the village as a charitable trust. In the 1920s funds were raised to construct a main hall attached to the old club room. This building then remained basically unchanged until the early 21st century when the situation was reviewed by the Trustees and a decision was made to refurbish the whole structure. Extensive fund raising enabled the hall to be modernised by early 2007 and a store room was added in 2008. This was followed, during the lockdown in 2020, by the completion of work to treat extensive damp areas in the hall. At the modernisation, where the club room was

26 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

located, the hall now has a well fitted Paula Rosa kitchen with double oven, five ring gas hob, microwave oven, a fridge/freezer and a plumbed in water heater providing constant hot water for tea or coffee. The kitchen also houses the gas boiler for heating all the rooms and providing hot water for washing up etc. The cupboards house crockery, glasses and cutlery for up to 90 people. Also part of the old club room, and next to the kitchen, is another room the same size, i.e. about 3m (10ft) wide x 5m (16ft) long. Whilst this can be used for separate activities, for parties it also serves as an area where food can be laid out away from the main hall. The main hall is 6m (20ft) wide x 12.5m (40ft) long and has a fire exit at both ends. For seating at tables, the main hall will accommodate up to 90; for seating in rows, theatre style, it will accommodate up to 100 - set out with 10 rows of 10 chairs. It includes an upright piano - tuned every year - and has a high ceiling which is tall enough to accommodate a bouncy castle. There are two high quality speakers

at each end of the room whilst around the room there are four audio sockets allowing input of sound into these speakers from portable devices such as i-pods or mobile phones. A sophisticated thermostat controls the temperature in the main hall allowing each hirer their own temperature setting. Hence, Keep Fit might prefer a temperature of 14c whilst Yoga might choose 20c. Our normal setting is 18c. The main storage room has 17 large tables, 7 small tables, over 90 upholstered chairs, 3 step ladders and adequate extension leads. A smaller storage room houses a sophisticated sound cabinet including microphones and CD player. A projector and screen are available on request as is internet access (including wifi). There are separate male, female and disabled toilets as well as baby changing facilities. Outside there is a secure lawn area and parking for 13 cars. There is disabled access to all areas. For those with internet access the hall has its own website: lbvh.org.uk which has a picture gallery showing many features of the hall.

The hall can be booked in units of 15 minutes – minimum I hour. Regular bookings use up many of the time slots during the week whilst weekend bookings tend to be children’s birthday parties and family parties including weddings. At present there are 17 regular users whose monthly bookings vary from 2 hours up to 36 hours. Their range of activities include Keep Fit, Pilates, Yoga, Scottish Dancing, Theatre Rehearsals, Women’s Institute, Computer Lessons, Art Classes, Flower Arranging, Cake Decorating and Table Tennis. If you are interested in joining any of these activities, our Bookings Officer, Pat Tilley on 01372 453802 would be pleased to provide you with a contact. If you are interested in making a booking, then please contact Pat Tilley. Note that all of our rates are inclusive of heating and the use of any of the equipment detailed above. Bookham Wine Club

Monday May 17 proved an important day for Wine Club members Monday May 17 heralded the welcome news members could meet again in groups of six, and this was celebrated with a wine tasting in member’s gardens - the first in a series of monthly summer garden meetings. With European holiday plans restricted, and the promised ‘green lights’ providing only a glimmer of certainty and safety, we decided to bring the delights of European wines to Bookham. In May, members enjoyed three carefully chosen French wines supplied by Laithwaite’s in Surbiton. The first, a celebratory fizz in the form of a Cremant. A really great value alternative to Champagne. Then, a Muscadet Sevre et Maine sur lie, Reserve. Laithwaite’s say they plan to put Muscadet back at the

top of the charts, and this wine did not disappoint. Our final wine was a ‘red,’ a top cuvee, two gold medal winner - ‘Cour De Granit Moulin-a-Vent’ from Beaujolais’s most loved cru. Intense, ripe, red and blackberry fruit with silky tannins. A fitting end to a very enjoyable afternoon! Through the summer months, we plan to ‘visit’ Portugal, Italy, and Spain and taste their ‘stand out’ wines. Then in September, we return to the Old Barn Hall, with our professional presenters returning to entertain us. For details on any aspect of Wine Club activities, and perhaps attend a meeting, please email membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk or visit our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk

Problems logging in to email? We have recently seen an increase in problems relating to email account passwords not being accepted when using many of the major email programs and apps like Outlook, MacMail, Android Mail to name but a few. There is a simple explanation for this, which has been very poorly communicated, and the reason is that these providers, namely Yahoo, Sky and AOL have introduced another level of security which will generate a random once used password for you to use in conjunction with that specific mail program or app. To get the App Password you have to login to your email webmail account, in this example I will use a Yahoo account. Go to your Yahoo webmail page and login, then go to the Account page, then Settings, then Account Security. Scroll down the page and you will see “Generate App Password”, select the App you wish to use your Yahoo account with, then press the “Generate” button and this will create your one time use password. Take this password and use this temporarily generated password as being your password with the program you wish to use. Now isn’t that simple!! Should you have a problem following these steps please do drop into the store and we can help you there.

Security- Keeping you safe Last month we looked at keeping your Operating System up to date. Assuming you are now fully protected there, our next step is to ensure your applications are not the weak link which is letting your security down. As a guide Microsoft usually provide their Office suite of software with a ten year life cycle which means Office 2010 will go (went) end of life in 2020. Similarly their Office 2013 will go end of life on 2023, and so on. Microsoft are trying to force every user onto the annual subscription product now, and Microsoft have said that the next release of Office (Office 2022) will be their last non-subscription version, although as this will take you through to 2032, there is a good future in the product. What will happen if you continue to use an end of life application like Office 2010? The product will still work, your data will still be accessible. Microsoft will not issue any Bug or Security Fixes, increasing the danger of being attacked by malicious thirdparties, with these risks remaining indefinitely. Finally, as your product presents a security risk, there is a probability that you may be blocked from sharing your documents with any other collaborators, as you could pose a risk to their security too. What can you do to become secure? Your options are limited, but essentially you will need to upgrade to an in-support product- be this the subscription or perpetual version. We are happy to advise further.

Outline Planning

PERMISSION GRANTED

for new Lower Road Rec Youth & Community Centre

Computer generated image provided by Surrey CC. This is for indicative purposes only and not the final design.

On Wednesday 28th April 2021, Mole Valley District Council Development Management Committee (DMC), after a protracted meeting approved outline planning permission for the new Youth & Community Centre on Lower Road Recreation Ground which we reported on in April 2021 edition of Look Local. This is excellent news as the journey can continue to provide a much need facility for our community and particular for our young people. It’s a “Well done” to the team of Residents, Stakeholders and Bookham Councillors who behind the scenes have worked diligently to move this application forward. Special mention should be given to David Cox who has persisted over the last ten years to provide this facility, and also to Peter Seaward Chairman of the BRA and Cllr Clare Curran, for their continued active involvement. David Cox has issued a statement of behalf of the Bookham Youth & Community Association: “The BYCA is very grateful to all the Councillors, not only from Bookham, but from across Mole Valley who voted for the replacement centre. A powerful message of belief in the value of our young people.

32 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

We understand the concerns of those living near the proposed site and will do all we can to work with them in the future to reduce those concerns. We trust that the yet to be published conditions for the approval will be realistic and practical to running a viable youth & community facility. A tremendous number of hours has been put into this exercise over very many years by a number of individuals but the journey is not complete. We see this as a milestone achieved on a road that has many unknown pitfalls to overcome. However, the focus will remain on delivery for our young people. We understand that the next phase will be the detailed planning application which will show the building design rather than the indicative computer generated model. Thank you to all the many supporters of all ages within our community for seeing the value in providing a facility that will serve future generations of the Bookhams. Hopefully it will survive as long as the old one did i.e. over 50 years!” Les Huett - BRA Communications

Loxwood Joust Goes Immersive For Its 10th Anniversary The UK’s most spectacular medieval festival, Loxwood Joust, is stepping up a gear in 2021 with a new participatory element for its 10-year anniversary. Teaming up with immersive event’s organiser Mostly Harmless Creations (Crystal Maze Live, Knightmare Live), the Loxwood Joust will this year expand upon its already packed agenda of fast-paced jousting, battle re-enactments and musical performances, to offer guests the chance to step inside this year’s story. Visitors will get to know the lords, ladies, knights and peasants; rub shoulders with the Royal Court and help decide the fate of the ne’er-do-wells that roam the kingdom. Guests will enter the realm via the magical forest and be met by an array of colourful characters; each with a story to tell, rumours to spread or a favour to ask. Accept the right invitations, choose a quest and become an official ‘Citizen of Loxwood’ in this unique experience. Danny Bacon, organiser of the Loxwood Joust explained: ‘With 10 exciting years to celebrate, we’re providing opportunities for the whole family to participate in the Loxwood Joust rather than just to spectate. We know from feedback that people love interacting with the Joust’s characters. So, with a

34 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

quest to become an official ‘Citizen of Loxwood,’ and the chance to have an impact on the outcomes of this year’s story, we are proud to say this will be a first for a festival of this kind.’ ‘People want to take part as much as watch, these days,’ says Mostly Harmless Creations Artistic Director Paul Flannery. ‘That’s what we do: we create a framework to allow people to get as involved as they want in the world and the stories we’re telling. It’s the age of play.’ Festivalgoers will be able to learn from the medieval characters who live in the battle camp, wander the grounds and become entwined in this year’s stories and outcomes. And add-on experiences for 2021 include: • Handfasting ceremonies • Blacksmithing workshops • Sword school (in the children’s kingdom) • Copper bowl making • Chain mail making • Singing workshops with the Medieval Baebes • Medieval banquets Experiences must be booked in advance when booking tickets at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk. The Loxwood Joust is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood and has ample Free Parking.

Book Reviews JUNE 2021 ‘The Book of Trespass’ by Nick Hayes (Hardback £20.00) This is a work of art, a fascinating piece of history, a passionate call for social justice and it is also beautifully written. Walking, cycling, or floating downstream, Nick Hayes invites us to accompany him on illicit rambles into land that once was common ground; a place of free firewood, grazing, foraging and connection with nature. Along the way he explains how the people of Britain have found their circle of freedom shrinking, with pieces of land tucked into the pockets of the wealthy again and again over time. The consequences of this for the environment, for mental health and for our future are timely issues to explore. Hayes’ illustrations are worth lingering over, as are his ideas.

‘The Darkness’, ‘The Island’, and ‘The Mist’ by Ragnar Jonasson (Paperbacks £8.99) This fantastic trilogy is set in the streets of Reykjavik, the Icelandic highland and cold, isolated fjords. The events unravel in reverse, cleverly unfolding the crimes and tragedies that have formed Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir into the heroic person she has become. The Darkness. Hulda is being forced into early retirement at 64. Horrified at the prospect of the impending loneliness awaiting her, she takes on a cold case, a Russian woman seeking asylum on the cold and foreign shore of an unfamiliar country. Soon Hulda uncovers yet another death of a young Russian asylum seeker and her efforts to uncover a botched investigation will end in tragedy. The Island. Weaving together a year old crime with a present day locked room mystery, and the chance to spend more time with Hulda, the spirited and down to earth character of this trilogy makes this second book a real treat. Hulda is sent to the isolated island of Ellidaey to investigate a disappearance, and she discovers haunting similarities to an old case, the murder of a young woman ten years ago. Are these cases connected? Hulda is soon caught in a web of deceit, convinced everyone is lying. What secrets is the island hiding? The Mist In this third and final book Jonasson draws readers into the inner life of its endearing and compelling protagonist. We follow Hulda as she returns to work following a personal tragedy. She will face a disturbing and puzzling case. A mysterious death at a remote farmhouse in the Icelandic far north, where two bodies are found. The novel weaves together Hulda’s personal life with extended flashbacks at the farm in the leadup to our victim’s deaths.

Mercedes Benz - S CLASS CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

Over decades I have revelled in the smart company, comfort and convenience of the Mercedes brand of memorable motors - and not for a single second have I endured the slightest setback in my admiration for the efforts of its gifted German engineers and designers. I have owned, borrowed, rented, been chauffeured, and tested, here and just about everywhere abroad, in all manner of conditions, both weather and road, and benefitted from every mile of my journeys. And that is why it would be seriously remiss of me now, not to cite the latest newcomer, as a thoroughly deserving prize winner... with the Mercedes Benz-S class awarded unique and universal recognition as the world’s number one luxury saloon. Motoring writers and experts from 28 countries who decide on the world’s finest car awards piled in to give it their full support in a hotly contested market. I was not invited to join in - do I hear your cry “Shame”?!! - but, I would have voted it a welldeserved winner too. It is the fourth, world luxury car triumph, for

42 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

Mercedes-Benz and the second time the S-Class has clinched the title in the 17-year history of the prestigious and treasured annual car awards ceremony. The top three short listed cars, chosen from around the globe, were the Land Rover Defender and the Polestar 2, as well as the eventual and well deserved winner, Mercedes-S .... Little wonder the head of S-class and C-class development, Professor Uwe Ernstberger said proudly: “Our car offers trailblazing and innovative success in all areas from safety to sheer comfort and reliable efficiency”. I could not agree more.... So what do you get for your hard-earned? My choice is the stylish S350d L Grand Edition. It returns a respectable 44.1 mpg. It moves from standstill to 62 mph in about 8 seconds. Its handling is sharp with infotainment and sheer comfort aplenty. The asking price is £79,415 - but haggle hard and I would bet you could knock at least £10,000 off that? Go for it...

Mole Valley Probus Club JUNE EVENTS

Summer is now upon us and the year is flying by. The club would usually have been busy with country walks, club lunches, and coach outings but has been restrained by Covid. For June, two of the increasingly popular on-line talks for club members are arranged by our Bookham Speakers Secretary, Terry Hulme. On the 10th at 4 for 4.15 p.m. Don Chiswell will present “Railway Manias”. On the 16th, same time, we have Major Julian Thompson’s “D-Day”. Two club charity donations have been made this year and our next donation is already agreed. This will be to the hard working Brigitte Trust, holder of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. We now plan for a restart to our coach outings, country walks, pub lunches, London concerts and a return to our friendly and active club social life. A pre Covid club outing to the WW2 Fighter Command HQ at Bentley Priory

We’re one of the largest Probus clubs in Surrey, with membership open to retired professional and business men and women. Our activities are recorded by our webmaster and can be seen at: molevalleyprobus.btck.co.uk and if interested in joining, our Secretary is waiting to hear from you at: butlers917@btinternet.com

Here, Lesley Ormiston introduces herself and shares some of her early ideas. I have two hundred words- and as always loquacious Th’ available count doesn’t seem awf’ly spacious, However, I want to deliver a greeting: Hello and God bless you, I hope we’ll be meeting. At Eastwick Road Church I am newly in situ Arranging new groups that have interests to fit you, Like gardening, music and crafts for a start, Then writing and laughing and sharing your heart; All in the interests of bridging the link Between church and community. What do you think? The evenings are lengthening, the temperature is rising - and our opening hours are extending! We’re delighted to be able to welcome you into the library to browse for books and use the PCs until 5pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, and until 4pm on Saturdays. To check on our latest opening hours, please visit the Surrey Libraries website surreycc.gov.uk/libraries. Some of your children may well have taken part in the Summer Reading Challenge in previous years at the library. It’s a great opportunity for children to engage with reading, and with the library. The challenge involves reading six books over the summer period, with rewards at each stage when you visit the library. This year’s challenge is a nature-themed one, called Wild World Heroes. There will be more information soon, so to find out more, make sure you follow us on Twitter and Facebook @BookhamLibrary to receive our latest updates, or pop into the library and see us!

We look forward to seeing you soon at Bookham library.
