Welcome

Welcome to our March magazine! Snow drops, multi coloured crocuses and bright yellow daffodils are all putting in an appearance in my garden at the moment;

so good to see. It’s also time to prune, so go mad with your secateurs! (our gardening article will confirm!) We welcome you spring! And whilst I’m on the subject, if you fancy joining the selection of local gardeners who open their gardens for us all to enjoy, as part of Bookham Open Gardens, do see their notice on page 59.

If you’re looking to get away and relax, why not consider treating yourself to a fabulous cruise? The Surrey Cruise Show is coming to Denbies on 20th March, why not pop along and find out all about what’s on offer? See page 9 for details. We visited ‘The Meeting Place’ in Bookham village this month where so much is available at various times across the week; a language hub, a coffee shop, legal advice and even a trained hearing champion advisor all have regular slots. Read about our much enjoyed visit on pages 16 & 17. Mole Valley District Council invited Look Local to attend a ‘Virtual Dementia Experience’ this month. Michelle went along and was quite taken aback by her experience. What an amazing training tool this is, do read about her visit on pages 20-21. We have lots of other interesting bits and bobs for you to discover this month too, I hope you enjoy this busy issue. Wishing you all a good month,

When my friend Edna asked if I would like to go along to The Meeting Place and find out more about it, I wasn’t sure quite what to expect. It’s home is in the Baptist Church in Bookham but it isn’t a religious group! You can get a really good cup of coffee there, but it isn’t a coffee shop! There are lots of children’s toys and games, but it isn’t a playgroup! Hmmm! What is it then? Basically it does what it says on the packet! It’s a place where people can meet! It’s a great place to drop in, have a coffee and a chat, chill out and please yourself for a while. When I went along the first time there was a group of Mums and childminders, having a natter and watching the children play together. What’s really lovely, is that it’s a big space with room for everyone. The children have lots of space to play and interact in a roomy safe environment and it absorbs the sound, so right next to all this lively activity, I sat and had a fabulous cappuccino

with a group, slightly older than the children, but only just mind you! Well! Young in spirit if not in body!! I was made very welcome and apart from my friend Edna, I didn’t know anyone there, but everyone was happy to chat. One of the regular customers Barry (pictured here) had a significant birthday recently (No! I’m not going to tell you which one!!) The volunteers baked a cake and gave him a surprise birthday celebration on the Saturday. Unfortunately I was not able to go along, but I understand it was well attended and a good time was had by all. Belated Happy Birthday Barry for last month. What a great community we have here in Bookham. The Meeting Place also offers some specialist services provided by volunteers. They run language classes for people whose first language isn’t English. Monday evenings 7.30pm 9.00pm at Del Fucco and Tuesdays 10am - 11.30am at the Baptist Church.
The Language Hub is run by a friendly team of TEFL trained teachers and assistants. They are able to teach people whose first language is not English, from beginners right through to advanced level students. They offer reading and writing practice as well as a lot of opportunities to practice speaking & understanding English in fun and creative lessons. The Monday evening classes take the form of Guided Conversation. Classes run during term-time and cost £20 for a ‘block’ of 6 lessons, payable at the start of the term. It’s possible to start at any time and the rate is re-calculated accordingly. It is usually possible to join a class at short notice. Lovely local resident, Ali Sangwine, has trained as a Hearing Champion advisor and can carry out minor servicing and repairs on NHS hearing aids. No appointment necessary but check with The Meeting Place which dates she will be there. Sessions are on a first come, first served system and you need to bring
your brown NHS Battery Book (which includes your settings and requirements) and your hearing aid. On the last Friday of each month between 10am 11am at the Baptist Church Wellers Hedleys Solicitors kindly offer a free no obligation legal advice drop in session. No appointment is necessary just drop in between 10am - 11am. The Coffee Shop opens on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year, from 10am-12noon. It is run by a friendly team of volunteers who serve a range of freshly brewed coffees and teas, and delicious cakes made by The Grange Centre. Do go along, with friends, family or on your own. You will always be made to feel very welcome and a great cup of coffee is guaranteed. And, if you are interested in volunteering they would love to hear from you! CHICKEN RAGOUT with PORCINI and PANCETTA
This stunning recipe is written by Ursula Ferrigno, an amazing lady who I work with at the Leith’s School of Food & Wine. She is an inspirational author and teacher and her passion is even more excitable than mine! The recipe has quite a few ingredients in it, but worth every second - it will see you through ‘til the heat of the sun arrives in April. Ursula serves it with her divine home-made gnocchi and if you’d like to know more, then join me at Leith’s!
INGREDIENTS
COOKING METHOD
2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 50g unsmoked pancetta, cut into small cubes 4 skin-on, best quality, large boneless chicken thighs cut into fork friendly chunks 100g pitted green olives 3 fresh bay leaves 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tbsp tomato puree 125ml dry white wine 50g dried porcini (soaked for 10 minutes in cold water; reserve the soaking water) 100g chestnut mushrooms 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped 150ml chicken stock Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper A handful of flat-leaf parsley
1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook until golden. Add the pancetta and cook for about 6 minutes.
w: WWW.BEINTHEKITCHEN.CO.UK
2. Add the chicken and fry for 10mins, then add the rest of the ingredients, except the parsley & parmesan cheese. Simmer, covered, for 30 mins. Stir occasionally, adding a little of the reserved mushroom soaking water if the mixture becomes too dry.
3. Taste the sauce, adjust the seasoning if necessary and add the parsley. It should be flavoursome and a good consistency, not too thick. If it is, add some water. 4. Pour the hot chicken sauce over cooked gnocci and serve with Parmesan cheese, if desired. e: BE@KASSAPIAN.COM

The Difficulty with Dementia Difficult to understand, difficult to talk about, difficult to deal with. With one in two people now likely to get cancer at some point in their life and with so much information available, we seem much more able as a society to be able to talk about it, understand treatment regimes better and be more able to support friends and family who have it. Every year 325,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. Every year 850,000 people are living with Dementia. And yet, as a society, we still seem to have difficulty truly understanding what sufferers of Dementia are experiencing and how best to support them and their carers on a day to day basis. At the end of January, Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC’s) Mole Valley Life team hosted Virtual Dementia training sessions in Leatherhead, giving staff a new and immersive insight into how they might better understand and support local residents who suffer from the diverse symptoms described as Dementia. Look Local were very privileged to go along and join them. The “Virtual Dementia Experience” took place in a specially converted “bus” which has been designed
20 Looklocal Magazine - March 2019
and medically assessed to provide the closest possible experience as to how having Dementia may feel. We were all fitted out with special aids to help replicate certain conditions that people with dementia experience. Glasses that replicated macular degeneration. Gloves that mimicked neuropathy and the lose of fine motor skills. Shoe inserts that also mimicked neuropathy and the feeling of discomfort and pins and needles that led us to “shuffle” to minimise the feeling. Head phones that “piped” conversations and other noises and replicated the lose of ability to “filter” sounds and how certain noises became magnified. It was truly alarming when a siren went off in our headphones. Several of us actually screamed out loud. Not a usual reaction for any of us. During the session the trainer tried to “feed” me with some soup. I couldn’t comprehend what he was trying to do, so when he brought the spoon up to my mouth I hit out. A completely automatic reaction, but not a “normal” reaction for me. He meant me no harm, but the “dementia” made me feel invaded, threatened and scared. I was given a shirt to button. With the lose of my
fine motor skills it was hard enough to find the buttons themselves and impossible to find the button holes. I could feel myself becoming increasingly frustrated, panicky and quite frightened. Even more so when the trainer tried to take it off me. Was he trying to help me? I didn’t think so. Again, I felt under threat, that he was angry with me for not managing to do the buttons up quickly enough or at all as it turned out. I snatched the shirt back. He took it off me again. I snatched back again and a tug of war ensued. The problems we experienced trying to carry out simple, every day tasks was quite frightening. After the session we were asked to describe our feelings; disorientated, frustrated, isolated, angry, vulnerable, aggressive, frightened, upset. Jerry the trainer from Xperience Training Ltd was amazing. He was so good during the debrief in explaining why we had been experiencing some of the things we did, how we could better help people with dementia cope with every day tasks and reduce some of the things that create difficulties for people suffering from Dementia. There is so much to learn about this subject and so much that I could impart
in this article that I just don’t feel I can do justice to here. Whether you know someone with Dementia or not, you undoubtably will at some point, or you will have contact with a Dementia sufferer whilst out shopping, or at a train station etc.. The statistics speak for themselves. So here is my plea to you. Visit http:// www.molevalleylife.co.uk/ for more information on the many services and support that you can access in Mole Valley. Visit https://www.training2care.co.uk/ Just reading about what training they provide will give you an insight and tips on how to support a Dementia sufferer, and if you are a company in the care industry or one that has contact with the general public or if you just want to provide your staff with valuable life skills, do please consider arranging some training. And finally, look up PK Beville. She is the American founder of this training programme. There are lots of videos to watch surrounding this training and she gives incredible insights into understanding Dementia sufferers and literally turns the myths on their head. Let’s, between us, make a start at taking the difficulty out of Dementia.

Bookham Wine Club ‘New from Espana’ wine tasting
There are so many reasons to love the wines of Spain ... and members of Bookham Wine Club will discover several more when Pippa Hayward presents her ‘New from Espana’ wine tasting on Monday March 11 2019. As an accredited Rioja Educator, and with a long held passion for Spanish wines, Pippa is superbly qualified to lead this special evening when members will sample seven different characterful wines; wines made from local grape varieties being grown across Spain’s rich and diverse winemaking landscape. Neatly blending tradition with innovation, long established regions and producers are making their best wines ever, and dynamic new producers are rising swiftly to the top. Spain is indeed one of the most exciting winemaking countries in the world - and this tasting is a unique opportunity to find out why.
Meetings are held in the Harrison Room at The Old Barn Hall on the second Monday evening of each month. They are relaxed and friendly, and you don’t need to be an expert in wine, you just need to enjoy drinking it, and have a thirst for knowledge! To find out more, please visit our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or contact: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk

HOME WANTED! Teddy, Buster & Boris
Teddy, Buster and Boris came into care as their owner had been taken into hospital long term. Unfortunately it was some time before we were aware of the situation and were able to rescue them; as a result the boys have been very unwell but with lots of care and support are on the path to a full recovery. They are calm, friendly and very handsome. Teddy is older than the other two boys and whilst their relationship is unknown they are all very attached to each other. Teddy comes as part of the package and if I was an estate agent I would describe him as " viewing essential to appreciate full potential". If you think you could be the family for this three then please contact us to discuss their needs in more detail on 01737 350307 Or if you would like to contribute to the cost of their care please do so through the just giving page. https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-Cats-Protection Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk

Gardening Matters Pruning
March is here and the word on the street is pruning. My favourite job, especially on yellow shrubs. It includes drastic tree lopping, tidying of shrubs and snipping out of new growth. There are 5 good reasons to prune: - To remove dead/diseased/damaged material - To shape - To create an open centre for air to circulate and encourage a healthier shrub - To remove unnecessary parts so that energy is concentrated where it’s needed and growth is stimulated, usually from the dormant, outward-facing bud nearest the cut - - To control the quantity of fruit/flower by reducing the number of buds, as with tomatoes, grapes or prize chrysanthemums The golden rule for pruning is, if in doubt, prune immediately after flowering so that new growth and a ripening process can occur before the next flowering’s due. Generally, lightly prune in autumn and prune harder in spring, although foliage plants should always be pruned in spring. Before any pruning, sharpen your tools and sterilise with a flame or surgical spirit - and make a clean cut with no jagged edges. With light pruning, relatively little is cut away – 1 in 3 of the branches for forsythia/weigela/lilac/philadelphus/ roses (climbing/rambling). Light pruning also involves trimming shrubs to shape, such as ceanothus after flowering, where you’re not aiming to reduce it to within an inch of its life, but rather, to make its shape
Cecelia John: 01372 200 000 26 Looklocal Magazine - March 2019
more pleasing and less random. To encourage a plant to grow taller for screening, prune its sides, and to increase its width/density/thickness, prune its top. Simples. Hard pruning involves the removal of much of the growth. Some shrubs become so overgrown, unsightly and old that they need pruning to 6” from the ground. You’ll miss out on 1-2 years flowering, but you may save a shrub otherwise doomed for the bonfire. Beech/ laurel/privet all respond well to hard pruning, as does rhododendron, but be sure to give rhodis an ericaceous feed. Buddleia and lavatera should be cut down to 6-9” each year and cornus to 3”. This apparently harsh pruning maintains shape, vigour, health, and with cornus, colour. After a hard prune, the plant will suffer from shock, so rake away all debris, aerate the soil with a fork, apply a feed – Growmore, fish/blood/bonemeal/ pelleted poultry manure – hoe in, and water well. Some plants - conifers/lavender/santolina - shouldn’t be cut back to the brown. In other words, they should only be cut back to a growing shoot or they’ll die. This pruning can still be quite drastic, but just make sure that you cut to a leaf or flower bud/shoot. Some variegated plants will eventually begin to revert to their original one colour, but if you cut out the reversions, you’ll prevent the plant reverting completely. There, I bet you feel better after all that cutting. Very therapeutic, eh? And all these prunings can be used for cuttings. Yaaay, free plants. Nature is indeed a miracle. |

Despite considering that there might be a slight drop off in income, the CCP Committee decided once again to maintain the price of stamps at 30p, about 50 % of the Royal Mail’s 2nd class price of 58p. In the end the final income did decrease, from £3,612 in 2017 to £3,391, a decrease of 6% and the number of cards delivered by 7%. However this was still a fantastic result and enabled us to send £3,000 to charity, while retaining a small float for any costs incurred before next Christmas. The Committee have agreed that the £3,000 will be distributed to four charities, split as follows : - £750 to Aprender, a charity based at Bookham Baptist Church involved in the education of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon https://www.aprender.co.uk/ - £750 to Practical Action who have a project to help farmers in Zimbabwe which will be matched by the Government https://practicalaction.org/ - £750 to Mary’s Meals ‘Double The Love’ appeal which will be matched by the Government https://www.

marysmeals.org.uk/ Mary’s Meals feed some 300,000 children world wide. - £750 to Medecins sans Frontieres for their continuing work in Yemen https://www.msf.org/yemen The two Government matched projects will add another £1500 to the amounts dispersed, giving a wonderful total of £4,500. Our volunteers are a very dedicated group. They keep raising significant funds for people living in developing countries who are unable to work their way out of poverty without being given a helping hand. Once again many thanks to all of them and to all of you for using the Christmas Charity Post once again. One last thought. The Managing Committee and their helpers are all getting older and we could do with some young blood. If anyone reading this would be prepared to help in the run up to Christmas, please contact me on meagius@gmail.com. Michael Agius - Chairman CCP

Updates, Security and Protection... the importance of updating and protecting your computers Getting updates to your computer and mobile devices core operating system and programs is so important as the updates protect you against the latest threats. When applying any updates this can be a lengthy process, which your device will (usually) do for you automatically and often the device will require a restart. We have seen instances where the updates do not apply correctly for whatever reason, in one instance an Apple iMac had all its data wiped and we had to go through a costly data recovery process to recover the data. The moral to the story here is ensure you have a current backup of your data. Just last week there was a Windows update that caused the machine to lock and blue screen, the entire process to self-resolve the problem took about 2 hours to return a working machine, and involved a number of very laborious restarts. The dangers of not having your machine updated far outweigh the risks of taking the updates. Windows 7 is scheduled to go end of extended support on 14 January 2020 Windows 8 is scheduled to go end of extended support on 10 January 2023 As a general rule, Apple will keep their most current two versions of software alive and will retire anything older, using this yard stick V10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave) are the most recent versions We have also seen a significant increase in the number of hacks coming via older versions of Internet Explorer. This could be in the guise of a banner appearing on your screen saying you have been caught viewing illicit material and will be reported unless you pay a ransom. These messages are intrusive and indicate that there may be someone logging your keystrokes, meaning your security is at risk. Our advice here is to download and use an alternative internet browser- which is still updated like Google Chrome or Firefox
We are now hearing more about data breaches as they occur, all a part of last years GDPR regulations, but it estimated that 3 billion email account passwords are compromised and on the dark web, if you have had the same password since 2017, we strongly encourage you to change your password, and include upper case, lower case. numbers and punctuation symbols, as a guide this website offers you an indication of how long it will take a computer to crack your password. https://howsecureismypassword.net/ This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
Hampton Cottage Gets A Historic Makeover Scaffolding currently around Hampton Cottage at 64 Church Street, home of Leatherhead Museum, marks the first major refurbishment work at the 17th century building since its formal opening to the public in October 1980. Built at some point between 1649 and 1682, the cottage was bought by the local history society in December 1976 to house its growing collection of artefacts and then underwent transformation of its external timber framework. Although the upstairs had survived surprisingly well, the ground floor level had badly deteriorated and the whole building had to be suspended on jacks while footings were dug out and all the outer walls underpinned. This time the upper timber framed parts are being restored. The Museum is due to reopen after Easter on Thursday, 25 April. The cottage was a private residence as recently as 1975. Dressmaker Hilda Hollis was still working there then from her front room with her cat Poppet lying in the sunny position in the bay window. It had been her family home for the previous 56 years since moving in
as a child with her parents William and Maria Barnard in 1919. William’s brother had rented the cottage for the decade before that. Hilda. They were there during World War 2. Frank became superintendent of the Leatherhead telephone exchange and maintained a shed in the garden where he recharged the accumulators for wireless sets in his spare time. Hilda’s parents lived there too until their deaths and Frank and Hilda remained there until his death in 1973. Two years later Hilda moved into a Leatherhead care home where she died in 1977. She left Hampton Cottage 100 years after it had been bought for £135 from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in December 1875. The new owner then, widow of a local brewer, was already living at the adjacent Devonshire Cottage. After her death in 1886, both cottages were left to a niece, Caroline Ockenden who moved with her large family to Devonshire House and is thought to have named its neighbour after her former home at Little Hampton, Sussex. An 1895 photograph shows Hampton Cottage with the name Duke & Ockenden Ltd above the upstairs front window. It seems the company, which made drilling rigs, was using the downstairs front room as an office. A magazine advert from March 1909 reads “Wallace A Ockenden, Artesian Well Engineer and Waterworks Contractor. Pumps and Pumping Machinery. Hot and Cold Water Fitter. Church Street, Letherhead.” Go to www.leatherheadhistory.org for more information from the Leatherhead & District Local History Society.

Toyota Supra Car Review
Supra-dooper! That is Toyota’s upcoming newcomer, a challenger of immense ability in the highly competitive sports car market. And it is due for a mid-summer launch, which is as exciting a prospect as can be. After months of rumour and anticipation the release of the long-nosed two-door coupe, an out-and-out sports car, has been finally confirmed, and already more than 350 buyers have ordered the exhilarating flyer. It was given a sneak preview at the recent Detroit Motor Show and it caused an instant stir and an avalanche of questions on when it would be up for sale. Little wonder. It is pleasing to look at and its underlying performance presence and promise will, I am confidently certain, accelerate it to the top the wish list of those with fifty grand to invest in a showpiece thriller that recaptures both the spirit and appearance of all that genuine sports car enthusiasts desire. It has been an arduous and tantalizing wait with Toyota cleverly leaking hints that the rumours of its appearance are not too far removed from the truth. It has been developed surreptitiously at the Nurburgring in Germany, the track scene of many an memorable car race. So, what about its power play? That is an exciting breathtaker, too. Every Supra boasts a turbo-charged straight six engine, developing 335 brake horse power. The cockpit, under a double-bubble roof, is a treat, designed around a set of race-inspired closely and cosy seats with extra side bolsters, high back support and integrated head restraints. And in every car there is a set of digital dials, and extensively fully informative infotainment screen.
48 Looklocal Magazine - March 2019
Toyota reveal that customers will be offered a range of strikingly bold colour options...red, yellow and blue shades as well as matt-grey finish and all these lightweight, rigidly bodied cars will enjoy the sheer benefits of 19-inch alloy wheels, high performance brakes, adaptive dampers and adjustable driving modes. Just 90 models of the exclusive A90 edition will be offered, finished in matt-Storm Grey, with mattblack alloy wheels and red leather seats. Then there is dual-zone air conditioning, keyless entry, rear-view camera, double-zone air conditioning, a 12-speaker audio system and wireless phone charging with those striking red leather seats. Phew!!! And it does not stop there...every car will be fitted with alloy wheels, high performance brakes, adaptive dampers and adjustable driving modes to ensure maximum cooperation. Add to that a rear view camera and 12-speaker audio system. All the Supras sold in Europe will revel in a feedback in a stunner of performance to please...it will smoothly dart with seamless power to 62 mph in a mere 4.3 seconds and roar onto an electronically limited 155mph with its eight-speed automatic gearbox easing and ensuring thoroughly effective progress. It has a short wheelbase but its wider tyres, beneficial stance and balance give it a feel-safe attitude. The Toyota warning is crystal clear. Watch out the likes of Porsche, Jaguar, Audi and BMW, The Supra is on its way....and how!!! Specification. Toyota Supra. Engine: Three-litre. Six cylinders. Turbo-charged. 340HP. Top speed limited to 155mph. 0-62 mph in 4.3secs. Price ÂŁ50,00-plus .

Drainage Improvements on Dorking Road, Bookham
Following years of pressure from the BRA, Surrey County Council Highways have recently carried out drainage improvements at the Dorking Road/ Polesden Lacey access road/Chapel Lane junction. New kerbs have been placed from the Polesden Lacey access road around to Dorking Road where two large capacity gullies have been installed in a set back bay. In the photograph, one of these can be seen situated beneath the Polesden Lacey sign. They will have far greater storage capacity than

normal gullies and should considerably reduce the volume of water flowing down Dorking Road towards Bookham. In addition two new gullies have been installed on the Chapel Lane corner and two in Admirals Road, between the field entrance and Dorking Road, to reduce flows from these directions. The Admirals Road bell-mouth has been surfaced to reduce the amount of mud and stone being washed from the track and fields onto Dorking Road.

Burglaries and securing your home this spring Let’s hope that, by the time you read this, we will be starting to see some warmer weather and, perhaps, even some decent sunshine? As we move into spring and look towards summer, it’s important to remain vigilant about the security of your home. It’s tempting to leave your doors and windows ajar to let some air in, but a refreshing breeze may not be the only thing you invite into your house. Unwelcome guests such as opportunists and sneakin burglars could enter your property through these insecurities. Due to the seasonal increase in burglaries it’s so important to be extra careful during the summer months. In three out of ten burglaries the thief doesn’t even have to break in, they gain entry through an open door or window. Burglaries have been known to take place when the home owners are in, or out in the garden. Unfortunately, some Mole Valley residents may well become victims of this type of burglary this summer. Surrey is one of the safest places in the country, but Surrey Police is continuing to crack down on burglary in the county. To ensure we keep burglary to a minimum, it is important that you take these simple steps to make it harder for opportunist thieves to get away with their crimes. Please ensure that when you go out, even for just a few minutes to see a neighbour or pick up the children from school, lock all doors and close ground floor and easily accessible first floor windows. If you have an
intruder alarm, then please set it. When you lock up at night check that all ground floor windows are closed and preferably locked. If you have a bedroom on the ground floor and like to leave a window open for air, fit a security stay which allows ventilation with security. Also, it is traditionally a time when people go away for short breaks and holidays. If you’re leaving your property empty, try to reduce any giveaway signs. Cancel deliveries, cut your lawn and ask a friend or a neighbour to pick up your post and generally keep an eye on your property. It’s also worth setting timers to bring on lights inside your home in a staggered pattern to convey an impression of movement and occupancy. Nowadays, there are even timers that will fit over normal wall light switches and they can be programmed to bring on the lights very much like a timer for central heating. If you have internet access, you could search for “timer switches for wall lights” to see examples of what is now available on the market? It’s always wise to be alert, but during the summer months we all need to pay a bit more attention and check that windows and doors are secure when your home is unattended. It is possible to let the air in and keep the burglar out. Don’t make it easy for the burglar, taking a few sensible precautions to keep them out, will ensure they are the ones that are left hot and bothered.
