Welcome to the march issue!
The wind told the grass And the grass told the trees The trees told the bushes And the bushes told the bees The bees told the robin And the robin sang out clear… Wake Up! Wake Up! Spring is here! After a mixed bag of weather in February let’s hope March brings some brighter days and as the clocks ‘Spring’ forward an hour at the end of the month (Sunday 27th March) that will really make a difference, I’m sure! I hope like me, you are enjoying the beautiful spring flowers which have been popping up for a while now, always lifts the spirits I think! Have you heard about the changes to the Highway Code? It’s important that we all become familiar with these recent amendments, so do go to page 20 for a brief look at them. You can read more on the Government Highways website which is listed on the page too. Also included this month are a couple of little competitions for your enjoyment! See pages 10 & 32 for details on these. Finally, do remember Mother’s Day on Sunday 27th March, it seems a little unfair that all us hard-working mums will get an hour less in bed that morning, but maybe breakfast in bed will ease the blow! Have a great month all, and stay well, Kindest Regards,
Ros

A garden for all seasons
With a little forward planning, you can get maximum enjoyment from your garden all year round. Here are some tips for simple but effective updates… Bring the outdoors in - create a seamless feel between indoors and outdoors with clever use of ceramics, soft furnishings, coloured glass and textiles. Sustainability is key - use organic products instead of chemicals and choose the right plant for the right place for easy maintenance, optimum soil health and reduced watering. Nurture and nature - reduce stress and promote wellbeing with areas to relax and be still in. Energise with colour - contrast calming pastels with fiery accents in your planting; oranges, reds and yellows are striking combinations. Naturalistic planting - combine structured architectural plants with grasses and wild flowers for a natural look. Add pockets of planting to gravel pathways and borders. Successional success - choose plants which keep on giving: spring blossom; summer flowers or fruits; autumn leaves and berries; frosty winter seed heads - providing food and shelter for wildlife when they need it most. Contact Boardman Gelly on 01306 611231 or email info@boardman-gelly.co.uk to discuss your garden project and get a free estimate.

Our evenings are hosted by wine trade professionals and expert wine educators who inform, entertain, amuse, and reveal great wines! The Club’s 2022 programme is already off to a successful start. Our tastings continue on March 14 with Nina Cerullo presenting her ‘Wines of the Medoc’, and on April 11, Pippa Hayward presents ‘Discovering Grenache’ when she reveals the amazing versatility of one of the most widely distributed grapes in the world! It is amusing that a virtue is made of the vice of chastity; and it's a pretty odd sort of chastity at that, which leads men straight into the sin of Onan, and girls to the waning of their color. -- Voltaire

This month we caught up with Michelle Teixeira about her experience with Buy to Let Hunter. Buy To Let Hunter is a niche company offering investors a chance to purchase perfect small properties to rent on a shortterm, serviced basis in the dormitory suburbs. But who, I hear you ask, chooses to stay in a tiny property in Finchampstead? One of our guests, Michelle Teixeira, recently had a chat with us about her experience. How did you come to be staying in one of our properties? “We moved to the UK for work. We came to the UK with just a few suitcases of clothes and our doggies, and hopes for our new life. With no furniture or anything else, a managed short-term rental was perfect. It gave us breathing space.” How has the experience with the BTLH team been? “It has been amazing. Doing this blind, from thousands of miles away and with little to no idea on how or where to rent, BTLH become my trusted advisor and guide.” What has it been like staying in our property? “It was in perfect condition when we arrived with all the services offered and all working from the moment we walked through the door. Everything we could think of was waiting for us from spoons to towels. We felt at home and perfectly comfortable from Advertising feature
the moment we arrived.” What would you say to other people in your position? “If this is being read by anyone emigrating to the UK I would advise them to contact BTLH immediately! The UK rental market is extremely tough to navigate on a good day, but even more so if you add in the extra requirement of a pet friendly home. Renting through BTLH bought us the time and peace of mind to properly navigate the UK rental market for our ideal long-term rental whilst living in a secure and fully furnished home with all the amenities allows.” We are so pleased to be part of welcoming Michelle and her family to England. The owner of Michelle’s serviced home has earned double in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a much-needed home with a hassle free, flexible investment. If you have a rental property which may benefit from converting to a serviced accommodation or if you would like to discover more about our business please read the whole series of interviews on the website.
Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? Get in touch & have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. For more info check out: www. buytolethunter.com. Quadrant Road, Richmond, London, TW9 1DH

NEW HIGHWAY CODE RULES FOR 2022 The Highway Code has received a refresh, with a new set of rules coming into force from 29th January 2022. As well as some 49 existing laws being updated, new rules will be introduced. The changes are rather extensive and can be found on the website link located at the bottom of this article. However, the key areas are detailed below.
Hierarchy of road users
Previously The Highway Code stated all road users should be considerate towards each other, applying this principle to pedestrians and drivers equally. It meant that equal responsibility was originally placed on all road users for assuring the safety of others. The new hierarchy places responsibility on road users who could do greatest harm to others, and it is with them that the greatest obligation to protect the most vulnerable on the road now lies. Top of the hierarchy are lorry drivers, cars, vans, buses and motorcycles. But it should be noted that cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers have a greater responsibility to reduce the danger posed to pedestrians.
Pedestrian priorities at junctions
Prior to the rule change, road users would have given way to pedestrians who have started to
20 Looklocal Magazine - March 2022
cross the road into which they are turning. Under the new rules priority must be given to pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road, which means that if you are about to turn into a road and a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you should give way.
New rule for drivers and motorcyclists at junctions
The new rule states that when turning into or out of a junction, drivers should not cut across the path of any other road user, including cyclists, horse riders or horse-drawn vehicles, if doing so would cause the other road-user to slow down, stop or swerve. For a more in-depth look at the new rules, visit: https://assets.publishing.service.gov. uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/ attachment_data/file/1037306/table-ofchange-to-the-highway-code.pdf

upstream, journey times were unpredictable. There is a sixteenth-century document stating that the state of the river was becoming a danger to navigation due to the pollution of the water and the damage to the banks. Flooding has always been a problem and as far back as 1504, money was being left to defend the parish from flooding by the river. The area at the southern end of the High Street where the war memorial now stands was Shepperton village sign. marshy land prone to flooding and Lord’s Bridge wasThe built to try to alleviate the problem. 'Copyright, Amberley Publishing, All Rights Reserved' Lord’s Bridge was first mentioned in a document of 1604, and there is a mention in the 17 Manor Court Records dated 1 October 1651 stating that ‘the two bridges called Mayes Bridge and Lords Bridge are in great decay, the jury humbly desire the lord that they may be speedily repaired.’ Despite these footbridges being built to enable the residents of Old Shepperton on the south side to get to the High Street area on the north, it would appear that this wasn’t always possible. At times of flooding, people used their initiative and apparently boys used home-made stilts to ‘run errands’ through the floods. In 1822, large'Copyright, areas of low-lying Amberley Publishing, All Rights Reserved' land were flooded and punts were used to convey people stranded by flood water to and from their homes. In 1894, flooding was so bad, it was recorded that a punt could be taken over the roads from Walton bridge to Chertsey bridge without getting grounded. Lord’s Bridge disappeared in 1987 when Shepperton’s Western bypass was constructed. The Shepperton war memorial stands on the roundabout subsequently created at the southern end of High Street.

The Dam busters tells the story. There were gun emplacements by the locks and although they probably helped prevent large-scale destruction of the water supplies, they did not prevent the lock keeper’s house on Shepperton’s Lock Island being destroyed by a bomb when it took a direct hit. Now there is just one house on Lock Island, the lock keeper’s cottage built in 1900 for the foreman of the Conservator’s depot, which at that time was located on the island.

Book Reviews MARCH 2022 ‘Mrs Death Misses Death’ by Salena Godden (paperback £8.99) Set in contemporary London, this novel blends the varied life of the city with reflections on how lives end and what lies beyond. Mrs Death might not be the archetype you have in your mind for the collector of lives, but she is who she is and she is exhausted. She befriends Wolf, a struggling young writer, who begins to set down the memoirs of Mrs Death as she shows Wolf glimpses of the times and places she has moved through. Written with verve and warmth by poet Salena Godden, this novel was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn prize.
‘Rose Nicolson’ by Andrew Greig (hardback £18.99) A fascinating novel which starts in Edinburgh in 1574. Mary Queen of Scots has fled to England where she is held captive leaving her son James VI on the throne with the real power in the hands of the regent, Earl Morton. It is a time of great transformation and uncertainty in Scotland with the Protestants dominating but many have not given up hope of restoring Mary to the throne and returning Scotland to the Catholic church. A really engrossing complex novel of high politics that’s surprisingly easy to read.
‘The Stoning’ by Peter Papathanasiou (hardback £16.99) A debut Outback crime novel by Peter Papathanasiou. Detective George Manolis is sent to the Outback town where he grew up to investigate the horrific death by stoning of a popular schoolteacher. He arrives in Cobb to find it a dusty landscape, truly derelict with locals who have mostly turned to drink or drugs, and where the local refugee centre is being blamed for the brutal murder. The story deals with a lot of current but difficult issues regarding immigration, racism and misogyny, which it manages to do in a sympathetic yet realistic way. In unravelling the truth behind the crime the novel deals with these socially relevant topics wrapped up in a wonderfully paced plot alive with real characters.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
COULD YOU BECOME ONE OF OUR ARCHIVISTS? One major topic will be paramount when this year’s 75th Annual General Meeting of the Local History Society is held (probably via Zoom) on 18 March. For many of those years past there were dedicated volunteers in place running historical archives for the district’s main areas – Leatherhead itself, Ashtead, Great and Little Bookham, and Fetcham. The archives have built up over the decades to
Old Cottage and Church
provide much of the material available to the public on our part of Surrey and its history. If you want to know anything about your neighbourhood’s past and previous residents, you can simply check it out through one of our archives or the many local history books produced since and before the history society existed. But we now face a problem – no-one to manage the L&DLHS archives themselves either in Leatherhead or the Bookhams. They exist partly online and partly at the Kirby Library of the Leatherhead Institute. Leatherhead Museum will also reopen at the end of the month as the obvious place to go for

some historical information, exhibitions and books to buy. But we also need two dedicated volunteer archivists to pull everything together and answer particular enquiries. Most of our records are abstractions made from primary sources many years ago, although new material is always emerging too. After all, history never ceases. All the existing compilations are available to new researchers who would North Street 1895 otherwise have to travel widely to search primary archives, as did history society stalwarts in days gone by. For example, the primary sources for Ashtead are as far apart as Arundel and Kendal! But we need two people to help researchers find what they want easily and quickly from the specific archives for Leatherhead and the Bookhams. Skills such as document preparation and scanning would be helpful for new archivists but they could also be handled by other volunteers. Local members of the University of the Third Age scanned our large collection of Ashtead photographs, for example. An archivist needs some knowledge of the parish they are looking after but someone who is completely new can start by checking out our complete collection of Newsletters and annual Proceedings on our website at www. leatherheadhistory.org. So if you think you might be interested and have time available, please contact L&DLHS chairman John Rowley at chairman@ leatherheadhistory.org to discuss the possibilities.

Wifi solutions- getting covered The requirements to have better coverage for your wifi appear to be increasing daily, especially with more devices requiring internet connection than ever before, yes this could be upstairs in the kids bedrooms, in the study or in the new garden office. There is a product which is low in cost, simple to install, works brilliantly and offers some really useful features- which really makes you ask “why did I not do this before?” The specific product I am referring to is the TP Link Deco E4 - 3 pack and costs just £150.00 As its name implies the kit consists of 3 units (transmitters), one unit plugs into your router with the other two units linking between themselves, usually they are positioned in areas near where you have signal weaknesses. The system uses “MESH” technology and this in short means that as you move between different areas the transmitters cover, the transmitter with the stronger signal will take your connection to ensure you always have the strongest and most resilient connection. This also means you have the same wifi network covering the whole property, making the connection of devices much simpler. We have sold many of these units and have been impressed with how simple they are to setup by many non technical home users- usually they are up and running within 10 minutes. We best recommend the use of the free smart phone/ tablet app, which helps you setup the units quickly, and offers many useful facilities like “bedtime” mode, which turns the wifi off at predetermined times and days of the week. You also can also setup different Wifi active times for different devices. For example your 10 year old child can only have wifi access until 7pm where as your 16 year old childs device can have access until 10pm. With some of the apps you can also “content control”. This can block access to unsuitable websites from specific devices by category like “adult content”, or “firearms content”. You can specify specific websites you may want to block by typing in the website address.
Know your stuff…..
Recently we have been reporting on the number and type of scams. We feel a large part of the scammers success is that they catch you when you are least expecting their call, and logic and reason just go straight out of the window. For example, a common scam is where they call supposedly being BT, and saying your Broadband is reporting problems. They obviously use BT as they are the UK’s largest Broadband provider, but if you are with Virgin Media or Talk Talk or TecRes, why would BT be calling you to discuss the service they do not provide? The simple answer is they wouldn’t be! We urge you to always be vigilant and sceptical on these calls. Do not enter into a detailed conversation with the caller. Stop the call by hanging up and don’t use your phone for 5 minutes (as this will terminate their call). Should you have any concerns independently find the phone number of the firm in question and call them yourself- it is very rare that these “big” firms will be calling you.

Skoda FABIA ESTATE
Long gone are the jokey days when any mention, or sight, of a Skoda stirred a snigger - or provoked dismissive remarks on its very presence. And when the brand spanking new fourth generation fab, fabulous Fabia estate is proudly paraded by its shrewd buyers in early Spring its reputation will be further enhanced. And well deserved.... As a fine example of quality and full value for money this stylish contender is the first Fabia to exceed four metres with leg room aplenty and add-ons galore to ensure it is a comfort zone on the move whatever the length of the journey motorway or country-lane wise. The redesigned challenger offers a tasty choice of four enjoyable frugal one-litre three-cylinder petrol engines varying from 65 to 80,96 and 110 hp. Upcoming pretty soon will be the range-topper 1.5litre 150hp model with four trim levels with prices varying from £15,305 for the entry level Hatch S version with a five-speed manual gearbox. In addition there is the SE Comfort for £17,195,

the SEL £19,380 - and rather bizarre, but attractive, all black version aimed to tempt those of us who enjoy fiddling with gadgets. I really revelled in its mysterious look with its black door mirrors. Every excellent example, save the S, will offer a choice of 5 and 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic gearboxes, ensuring their nippiness and ease of control at a comfy and smooth pace without any scary acceleration. It is the first Fabia to have a heated windscreen and steering wheel - and in EuroNCAP crash-bang-wallop safety tests it easily coped and won all five stars. It also has wheel options that range from 15in to 18in alloys. Its infotainment screen is yet another breakthrough, and its boot...wow...is huge and flexible, 380 litres, and with the rear seats down that expands to 1,190 litres. And, guess what? The ever-so thoughtful designers have fitted an umbrella in the door. The Czech design team have come up with a real winner - jammed packed with practical benefits. And all at a bargain price....

A New Beginning NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
As someone who would quite like to hibernate between the start of Winter until the Spring, this March is already showing plenty of signs that Spring really is just around the corner and I know that makes many of us feel so much better. The past two years have had a huge impact on everyone in so many ways and, although I appreciate fully that we still have some way to go before we can truly feel that the worst of Covid and the pandemic is behind us, there are signs of very real hope that we are going to be able to venture out again and resume some of the parts of our lives that we previously took for granted. It is with that in mind that I wanted to remind everyone about the importance of home and property security when you are going to be out and about and not at home, even for a very short time. If you are going to be out after dark, please remember to use some simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern to give the impression of occupancy and movement in your home. Also, make sure that doors and windows are securely locked and please don’t leave keys showing in door and window locks as this makes the job of breaking and entering so much easier for a burglar. Always keep side gates locked and securely bolted, preferably with a bolt and waist height on the inside and do not leave wheelie bins where they could easily be moved to help

someone climb over a side gate. Over the past two years, the requirement for social distancing actually had a positive impact on the level of pickpocketing that was being reported, possibly because people were so much more aware of how near people were when in shops etc. I would like to remind everyone, however, to keep purses, cash and personal belongings secure. If you use a handbag with a long shoulder strap, please keep the bag zipped up and the strap across your body, so it cannot easily be pulled from your grasp. Gentlemen should also be aware of where they keep their wallets and cards, ideally in an inside coat or jacket pocket rather than the back pocket of a pair of trousers. On a totally different tack, please be aware that telephone scams remain a constant threat from people trying to get you to part with personal information that they can use to commit fraud. If a call claims to be from your bank, building society, HMRC or even a utility company please remember that these companies will never ask you to disclose personal information such as account numbers, pin numbers or other financial information. If possible, terminate the call immediately, wait a few minutes to check that the line has properly disconnected from the call and then phone the company yourself - using the number that you can find on statements or bills.
There was a good turnout for the February litter pick despite the chilly
weather, see photo. We were pleased to welcome two new members to the group. We collected 15 bags of litter and some extraneous objects.
