bookham at SEA on village day THE OLD BARN HALL, CHURCH RD, KT23 3PQ www.bookhamcommunityassociation.org

A highlight of Bookham’s year is Village Week, which begins on Saturday 15th June with Village Day. All at Sea is this year's theme – in, on and under the sea. Village Day is sponsored by The Vineries Garden Centre and attractions in the afternoon in the field behind the Old Barn Hall in Church Road include an exciting surfing simulator and a return of the popular climbing wall for all to try. The day starts at 11.40am with the big parade from the High Street where children from local playgroups and infant schools, dressed in costumes interpreting the All at Sea theme, will parade to the Old Barn Hall. Reigate Sea Cadets Band will lead the parade for the first time and a steel band will also be playing. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes in each group when they reach the arena. Non-stop arena events will include music from the Reigate Sea Cadets Band, singer Natalie Goodacre, the Band from the Pub and Pantastic Steel Pans. Local schools, Action Theatre and Belly Dancers will also entertain. The Surfing Waverider attraction, sponsored by Elio's Barbers and Di Carlo’s Hairdressing, will challenge everyone’s surfing skills, as the bucking bronco has in previous years. The exciting climbing wall is sponsored jointly by John Wadsworth Estate Agents and Churches Together of Bookham.

A Punch and Judy show, roundabout, bouncy castle, slide and Bocketts Farm animals are just some of the entertainments for children. The field and Hall will be filled with more than 50 stalls and sideshows run by local organisations. The popular open-air bar will serve a selection of real ales, a barbeque will have burgers and hot dogs, and cold drinks and ice cream will be available on the field. Lunches and teas will be served all day in the Old Barn Hall. The aim of Village Day and Village Week is to have a great time and raise funds for Bookham Community Association to maintain the Old Barn Hall and produce the quarterly Bookhams Bulletin. Events during Village Week include on Sunday 16th June: Bookham Open Gardens with over 15 gardens open and refreshments available at the Old Barn Hall. Subsequent events in the Old Barn Hall are on Monday 17th June: Duplicate Bridge Cream Tea hosted by Bookham Afternoon Bridge Club at 1pm, celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Mole Valley Silver Band concert at 7.30, and on Tuesday 18th June: Quiz Night for BCA affiliated teams. BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS SUNDAY 16TH JUNE 2019

Do come and join in this annual event where over 700 people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way. This year we are featuring around 12 varied and attractive private gardens. It is very reassuring that in our 14th year we are still attracting new gardens and have six of them to share with you. Of the rest none were open last year so you’ll probably see some changes. In addition, we welcome back The Dawnay School (after an absence of some years), Gracewell Care Home, the Grange Centre (with its Victorian walled garden) and Little Bookham Allotments. Our garden owners will give you a warm welcome and provide you with the opportunity to pick up ideas for your own garden, answer your questions or you can simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The gardens come in all shapes and sizes, from the formal to more laid-back planting, and some with wildlife friendly planting and habitats. You’ll also find fruit and vegetables in abundance at the Grange and the Allotments and some gardens. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid May from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. BEAVERBROOK Hotel and Spa

Once the home of press baron & politician Max Aitken, aka Lord Beaverbrook, this beautiful hotel sits in the foothills of Box Hill, between Leatherhead and Dorking. Set in 400 acres of Surrey countryside, it’s the perfect setting for this local gem. The recently refurbished country house still has a wonderful feel of belonging to someone special. Not surprising as it boasts an impressive history, which also includes many awe-inspiring guests, from times gone by. As you pass from one reception room to another, you will spot a selection of fascinating wall art including a framed poem, written especially for Lord Beaverbrook, by non-other than Rudyard Kipling himself! The glassdomed lobby is home to a Grand Piano and a stunning Gerhard Ritcher tapestry which hangs on the wall. Photographs from WW1 & WW2, depicting scenes from when Lord Beaverbrook was a cabinet minister,

also make for interesting viewing. The grand historic family home has been so tastefully transformed and so beautifully designed by Susie Atkinson. It’s very in keeping with the era, yet weirdly up to date as well: How did she do that? Open fires & comfy sofas with views over the gardens and beyond to the beautiful North Downs. The library houses leather bound books galore, with walls of original wooden paneling. The first UK home cinema is still in place where many war-time planning meetings were held, this is now available for hotel guests to watch a selection of films from the comfort of deep red sofas. You really can imagine Sir Winston Churchill standing by a window watching the night sky for German planes en route to London. He apparently spent much of the war here with his friend and fellow cabinet minister Lord Beaverbrook. Other celebrity guests included Charlie Chaplin, HG Wells, W. Somerset Maugham,

Ian Fleming, Wallis Simpson, Elizabeth Taylor, Joe & Rose Kennedy and Dame Rebecca West. We were certainly in good company then! On our arrival, we were given a warm welcome, our car was parked for us and our cases discreetly delivered to the Dame Rebecca West Room! A stunning and large room with a roll top bath in one corner. The hotel offers 18 rooms, which are individually styled and named after the former prestigious guests as mentioned above. One of these being ‘The Dowager Suit’, formerly Lady Beaverbrook’s room, it has many antiques and even a Louise Bourgeoise artwork. The large roll top bath is perfectly positioned by a window for views over the countryside, out towards Dorking. This is no ordinary hotel. All the bedrooms have luxurious bathrooms, Apple TV, a Coffee Machine, a mini fridge, stocked with complimentary soft drinks and a few tempting snacks, and a bottle of Sipsmith Sloe Gin too! The Garden House and Garden Cottage offer a further 11 rooms; these are Victorian in style and there is also a cookery school in this building! And 6 more rooms are due to open in early 2020, located in the Coach House. At about 7.30 pm we started our evening at ‘The Parrot Bar’ a stunning room with an amazingly well stocked

14 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

art deco bar; we both enjoyed a ‘Spitfire Collins’ a mix of Vodka, peach and elderflower with ginger and lemongrass undertones! This was served with shelled pistachio nuts & olives. A delicious spring aperitif. The hotel’s main restaurant is not quite what you might expect; it is in fact, a Japanese Grill. Under the watchful eye of Ex Nobu head chef Maruyama Taiji the menu is authentic with a modern twist. We started our meal with a Garden Salad which would pass as a work of art in itself, to accompany this, Lobster Tempura with Wasabi Mayo and Jalapino Shiso Dressing. Totally amazing is all I can say. Next up, a shared plate of Chef Selection, melt in the mouth, Sashimi, beautifully tender and perfectly light. For our main courses I chose Corn Fed Chicken with Teriyaki sauce & sliced truffle and my guest opted for Koji Monkfish, with Yozu Soy, sautéed mushrooms, and porcini powder. To accompany these, Broccoli with Kimchi Mayo and steamed rice. A feast we will not forget in a very long time. Each dish was perfectly prepared and the fusion of flavours sent our taste buds into over drive. We enjoyed a bottle of chilled Chablis with our meal, which went beautifully with the Oriental cuisine. There is an amazing wine selection to choose from, which would please even the most demanding connoisseur I’m

sure. To finish our meal a ‘Tasting Plate to Share’ which included small portions of Hibiscus Chocolate Fondant with Raspberry Sorbet, Matcha Tiramisu, Lemon Curd Scorched Meringue, and a Caramelised Banana Cake with Coffee and Dulce de Leche Ice Cream. If you like good food, you have my word, you will not be disappointed. This was an exceptionally good meal. We slept very soundly in our four poster bed with it’s super soft white sheets. However, our treat was not over yet! We woke the next morning looking forward to the Hotel Spa experience… The Spa is in a separate building just next to the Hotel; The Coach House, so named because it used to be just that… Striking glass design by Brian Clarke runs through the whole building, it’s bold for sure, but works very well. The Spa has a selection of sumptuous treatment rooms, a large steam/ice room and relaxation area, a Boutique and Apothecary, a delightful Deli Restaurant where food is served between mid-day and 5pm, a stunning indoor swimming pool and a large heated outdoor pool too, which was just about to be opened for the first time when we visited. The top floor of the Spa is devoted to a state of the art gym, where personal trainers are available if required. The large changing rooms were ‘top notch’

each locker housed a big fluffy white robe and flip flops, the large shower cubicles would match any top hotel room with clean white floor towels placed outside each shower. There were plenty of big mirrors and hair-dryers available and all immaculately clean. My treatments certainly lived up to the venue as well. To start, a 90 minute, full body Biodynamic Bodywork Massage. Which apparently embraces a full range of therapeutic methods, an effective treatment for relief of many physical, neural and psychological conditions. It blends Western Science with Eastern philosophy and was, by far, the best massage I have ever had. To follow I was treated to a ‘Therapi Honey Facial’. This treatment uses the regenerative and healing properties of honey and propolis products from Therapi, to cleanse, massage, treat fine lines and stimulate collagen. It left my skin feeling radiant and deeply nourished. A wonderful facial, and super relaxing too! Like the hotel, this is no ordinary Spa! We had the most amazing stay, the staff we met were all charming and looked after us so very well. Thank you all, for making our stay so special. We will certainly not forget the time we stayed in the house of Max. Is it any wonder this hotel was named as ‘The best Hotel in the UK’ by The Times? www.beaverbrook.co.uk | 01372 569 799

Eastwick pupils enjoy

‘The Daily Mile’

Headteacher running with Eastwick pupils

Pupils at Eastwick School have joined around 3500 primary schools in England by pledging to take part in the fantastic ‘Daily Mile’ fun initiative to inspire healthy habits and reinforce a positive attitude towards regular physical activity from a young age. Every morning Eastwick pupils are encouraged to get fit for life and learning by running or jogging for 15 minutes at their own pace with their friends. It is a physical activity which is social and non-competitive that promotes social, emotional and mental wellbeing, as well as fitness. Such morning activity also helps pupils’ concentration in the classroom optimising their learning. The pupils were able to share their enthusiasm with their parents when the school invited Nikki Love, record chasing ultra runner to officially opened its new ‘Daily Mile’ running track on Friday 5th April at the school’s annual Trainer Trek event. The fundraising

16 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

& Nikki Love with Yr1 pupils

event organised by The Friends of Eastwick School had raised £4500 at the end of March with aspirations to raise this to £6000 by the end of April by encouraging children to gather sponsors for their laps of the track. The money raised contributes towards exciting new playground projects. Nikki’s challenges have included running 63 marathons in 63 days criss-crossing Britain and 750 miles in 32 days in Ireland. This year she has challenged herself to run 4000km in 63 days across Australia starting in August. She spoke to the pupils passionately about challenging themselves to be ambitious and brave, inspiring them to set targets to get fit not just now but throughout their lives. The school is planning to match Nikki’s Australian challenge in the summer term by running 11600 laps on their new track. Come rain or shine, Eastwick pupils have a positive attitude to getting fit for life.

“CHICAGO” BY THE HOWARD OF EFFINGHAM SCHOOL REVIEW BY MARIA SUTHERLAND

The reputation for the productions staged by the Howard of Effingham School is a great one, for sure. Several years ago in fact, when I was a newcomer to Bookham and my own children were just beginning on their school journeys, I had heard from many people that the Howard shows are spectacles not to be missed. I tried to imagine what people could possibly mean when they said that. How could it be that a normal, rather ordinary (in a way) secondary school, could produce such memorable works of art? Well, this March, 2019, I had the chance to find out what all the fuss is really about. The Howard of Effingham were to showcase their talents at the Leatherhead Theatre, through a delivery of the renowned Broadway and West End musical sensation “Chicago”. My twelve year old daughter was keen to go along and support her new secondary school. I booked tickets for the Saturday matinee performance. I had very few expectations. Secretly, I prayed that they would get through without public humiliation and just…survive. Yet, from the moment the orchestra struck up the first chord, they had me. We watched

18 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

with baited breath as our young people commanded the stage. They acted, sang, moved and danced in a way that seemed like they had been doing this for their whole lives. I was spellbound! The story of the “Chicago” musical is set in the nineteen twenties amidst the seedy city backdrop, where crime and celebrity, in that very union, were admired and given status. The original show is filled with sexy glamour. This, the high school edition, did not shy away from the adult themes, yet they were diluted, whilst being handled with real grace and poise by the young actors. I was struck by how intelligently the cast interpreted the work. It felt to me that they had a great understanding of what they were exhibiting and that they did not need to be reminded that fame, celebrity, money and power are not the routes to a good life. In their hands, they managed to deliver the themes to us with the tongue in cheek humour that the show needs. At times, this was subtle humour and then in other moments, peals of laughter could be heard from the audience. Every moment was a joy to watch and experience.

Gardening Matters PURPLE, PINK, BLUE, RED & WHITE TOO

Ooh, May. Ooh, colour. OOH, PURPLE. But pink, blue, red, white too. Let’s have a swift romp through some colours and their effects in the garden. Pinks soften and harmonise. They’re a good contrast to other plants and will stand out against brickwork/stone. Best used in drifts. There are old faithfuls, eg astilbe, osteospermum, carnation, but also lythrum salicaria (likes wet soil, some good pinks and purples), Oriental poppy (a range of colours from palest pink to apricot), and nerines (many varieties from red to pale pink. Plant the latter with lavender and agapanthus, as they all have the same requirements. Blues, oh so much choice. They can be put with anything and range from palest blue to almost purple. At the back, self-supporting plants are handy because you don’t have to faff around with stakes and twine. They’ll also give distance and space and have a calming effect. Acanthus (partial shade), scabious (prefers chalk), larkspur and campanula all fall into this category, the latter very conveniently leaving a ruff of leaf when it dies down so that you know where it is. Other back-ofborder plants include delphinium (full sun), monarda (bergamot, part shade) and agapanthus (just about hardy, so plant deep in full sun). Caryopteris and perovskia, both with silver, fragrant foliage, echinops (blue, thistlelike, soft pom-pom), cornflower (annual, but self-seeds freely), aquilegia (very hardy, easy to grow, a variety of shapes/colours), nigella and lupin, all medium height

and therefore middle of the border. For the front, enjoy hardy geranium ‘Buxton’s Blue’ - take the shears to it when flowering is over to get another flush of colour. A blue hydrangea is very striking, but needs semi-shade, as it becomes limp in hot sun - the paler the colour of the plant, the less sun it needs. Remember too that in order to achieve and maintain the blue colour, you must plant in ericaceous compost and feed with sequestered iron or ericaceous tonic. Reds will draw attention to, or draw it away from, something else and nearly always need full sun. It’s best to follow a graduation in colour from strong orange to deep red. They need space and you need to be able to see beyond them. Fuchsia and peony are good examples of summer reds, but there are some stunning red echinacea and salvia, not to mention petunia, geranium and phlox. Finally, whites. These will set off anything planted with them, adding distance and coolness. Good back-ofborder plants are gypsophila crambecordifolia (grows to 6ft, then dies right down), eremurus (foxtail lily, selfsupporting flower spikes which open at the bottom), Japanese anemones and dicentra (Love-Lies-Bleeding), while nicotiana syvestris (tobacco plant), Solomon’s Seal (straight bells with green tips, needs moist conditions) and astilbe (also needs moist conditions) are old friends. There. So many lovely plants, so difficult to know when to stop. Next month, planting in black and green, watch this space.

Bookham flower club

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH

Bookham Flower Club meets on the first Monday every month (apart from Bank Holidays) in the Barn Hall, and the meetings start at 2.15pm. Visitors are very welcome. The AGM took place in March, preceded by a most enjoyable lunch. Long standing members were presented with badges marking Flower Club membership stretching back, 25, 40 and 50 years! A new Chairperson, Christine Martin, was appointed, and she hosted her first meeting on 1st April when a National Demonstrator, David Thomas, entertained the members with his demonstration entitled “Florimania”. David prefers to do designs which are monochromatic, using tones, tints and shades of a single colour, and the results were stunning. The May meeting takes place on 13th May, when Stephanie Laing’s title will be “On The Move”. On 3rd June Anna Steven’s demonstration is entitled “Do You See What I See”. The Club holds monthly competitions for members,

who can enter according to their experience and ability. Entrants are awarded points so they can work their way up from Novice Class, eventually to Senior Advanced. The title of the Club competition for May is “Twisted”, and in June the challenge will be “Reflections” and the design must incorporate a mirror. Bookham Flower Club holds a bi-annual Flower Show and preparations are under way for this year’s Show which will take place on 19th October at the Barn Hall. The Show title is “Enchantment”. We hope that the variety of Class Titles should appeal to all abilities, and inspire many entries, so on the day there will be fabulous designs to enjoy, as well as refreshments, tombola and a raffle. Bookham Flower Group is a member of NAFAS – National Association of Flower Arranging Societies and details of what is going on in the area can be found on their website: www.surreynafas.org.uk. IT’S NOT ALL

JAM & JERUSALEM!

Do you associate the Women’s Institute with jam, Jerusalem, arts and crafts, pots of tea and civilised conversation. How wrong you are! I recently went along to a Resolution Briefing Meeting for representatives of the Surrey WI’s. What is that I hear you cry? As of January 2019 there were approximately 220,000 members of 6,300 Women’s Institutes in England, Wales and the islands. Apart from the local meetings, the jam making, naked calenders, Processo drinking and other such activities I have previously written about, the WI campaigns on a wide range of issues affecting women, based on resolutions passed at each year’s national Annual Meeting. Interestingly, the first resolution passed was in 1918 and called for “sufficient supply of convenient and sanitary houses, being of vital importance to women in the country”. You see! Nothing changes much. Housing is still a hot topic! In 1943 they called for “Equal Pay for Equal Work” and continued to argue for this until the Equal Pay Act 1970 was passed. The WI discussed HIV/AIDS in 1986, agreeing to “to inform the general public of the true facts concerning the disease AIDS” and subsequently working with the Terence Higgins Trust to produce a leaflet on “Women and AIDS” and in the 2017 meeting passed a motion on microplastics pollution or “Plastic soup”. I digress, but it gives you some background. The meeting that I went along to was to brief delegates representing Wi’s across Surrey at the Annual General meeting where the resolutions would be voted upon. Each delegate

24 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

will represent a number of WI’s and cast their vote for each resolution according to the voting results at local level, for or against. The meeting gave the delegates a chance to ask questions that they maybe asked, and to understand the what is expected of them. It was very informative on many levels, but for me, and hopefully for you, the most interesting part is the work that goes on within the WI that perhaps we weren’t previously aware of and that the WI does not shy away from tough subjects. The two resolutions this year are: A call against the decline in local bus services Over the last decade there has been a massive decline in the number of bus services, particularly of those in rural and semi-rural areas. In order to alleviate loneliness, improve health and wellbeing, as well as promoting sustainable development, the NFWI calls on the government and local authorities to increase subsidies and work in partnership with bus companies and community transport operators to enable an adequate provision of services. Don’t fear the smear Cervical screening saves around 5,000 lives a year, yet attendance is currently at its lowest for a decade. The NFWI urges WI members to attend routine screening, to take action to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening and address barriers to attendance to help eradicate cervical cancer. Both resolutions can be voted for which may result in both campaigns being supported. We will let you know the result in a later magazine. So you see, not just jam and Jerusalem!

HAMPTON COURT PALACE GARDEN FESTIVAL

©RHS / Anca Panait

From 1st to 7th July, The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) largest flower festival will return to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. With an abundance of beautiful gardens and plants on display, the festival will bring together thoughtprovoking designs to highlight the power of plants alongside plenty of inspiration for visitors to grow a garden they love. A new Global Impact Gardens category will address challenges we face in today’s world through plants and design, whether they are social, economic or environmental issues, with this year welcoming two first time designers. The Forest Will See You Now by Michelle Brandon will highlight the benefits of trees, recreating a forest contained in an oversized packet of pills as it champions nature as a medicine in the 21st century. Also demonstrating how nature is imperative to happiness in a digital age, Seonaid Royall’s Believe in Tomorrow will reconnect children with nature. Other gardens will embrace sustainability. Designer Tony Woods and Thames Water will highlight the need to take care of our water resource. The Thames

Water Flourishing Future Garden will demonstrate how gardeners can encourage biodiversity, reduce water use and prevent flooding. Last year’s Best in Show designer Matthew Childs will also highlight the environmental benefits of getting a Smart Meter with Smart Energy GB. The RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival will run from 1 – 7 July. The exclusive Preview Evening* held on Monday 1 July is the perfect opportunity for those wanting to be one of the first to experience this year’s gardens. For further information or to buy tickets, please visit the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt

COMPETITION TIME: A fabulous chance to win a pair of tickets to Hampton Court Flower Show for Look Local Bookham readers. Just answer the following question:

Whose garden will reconnect children with nature? Email your answers to ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk, before 14/05/19 - winners announced in our June edition.

PETITION TO RESOLVE ONGOING FLOODING ISSUES IN BOOKHAM

HAS ACHIEVED THE INITIAL PART OF THE REQUEST TO COMPLETE THE INVESTIGATION WORK Les Huett – BRA Publicity

The BRA initiated petition, which residents supported, requesting Surrey County Council (SCC) to investigate and then resolve the ongoing flooding issues in central Bookham by the Squareabout, has achieved the initial part of the request to complete the investigation work. This has involved tunnel cameras and flushing in the drains in Lower Road and Church Road to identify the underlying causes of the flooding. A plan is now being worked on and is on SCC “high priority” work to do. It won’t be cheap and more importantly any works will involve substantial roadworks and delays around the Squareabout. It will be painful but let’s hope the SCC doesn't take too long to execute on the resolution stage. Also on the infrastructure front following pressure from the BRA and The Grange, a scheme has been included under SCC ITS schemes, to assess what pedestrian

26 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

improvements would be possible at the junction of Lower Road with Rectory Lane and Little Bookham Street. SCC inform us that work is now complete on the Feasibility Design for this scheme which consists of providing a raised table on Lower Road, on the western arm of this junction. This will have an informal crossing facility on it, similar to the existing facility on the eastern arm of this junction. Consultation on this proposal is to be carried out shortly. £30,000 has been allocated by SCC for work to be carried out but hopefully Thakenham Homes, developers of Preston Farm, could be made to carry out this work at their expense. BOOKHAM TALKING NEWSPAPER Do you know blind or partially sighted residents in our community who would benefit? Every week, a team of local volunteers gather at The Grange in Bookham, sitting like newsreaders of yesteryear around a large table, to record another edition of our local Bookham and District Talking Newspaper. We take our sight so much for granted. Without it, or with failing sight, talking newspapers provide a lifeline to the local news that so many enjoy. Local ‘talking newspaper’ charities started 50 years ago, and now number about 500 across Britain helping over 100,000 blind and partially sighted people access news from

their local community. Bookham & District Talking Newspaper was set up over 40 years ago by members from our local Rotary Club. Today we have just over 40 users living from Ashtead across to Horsley. This is in fact only half the number who used the service at its height, and so we would be delighted to hear from or about others who might benefit, as we are sure the extra demand exists – see our local recruitment poster. This is a free service, run by volunteers and using freepost Royal Mail to deliver a weekly USB drive

which users simply plug in to a special player, provided by the charity via an in-person home visit to explain how to use it. Having listened to each edition, the pen drive is sent back to us for re-use. Please do get in touch if you know someone who would like this service. Also, you might like to spend an enjoyable occasional hour or two as part of our friendly volunteer team? Without obligation, please also call Martin on 01372 453565 for an initial discussion. POEM CORNER How Time Flies!?? Do you, like me, wonder why Time so often is in short supply? And do you find, with some surprise, The older you are, the faster it flies? So there’s always a race against the clock To get everything done before you flop Into a chair, comfy and deep, Switch on the tele, and fall asleep! The shape of our lives is governed, of course, By the use we make of this special resource. Time can drag waiting for a bus or train Which is suddenly cancelled, or late again. Or when ‘hanging on’ at the end of a line Listening to Vivaldi for the umpteenth time! But there are also moments to always treasure “Oh to stop the clock”, so they last for ever!

We can dwell on times past and reminisce On things well done, or chances missed, Or look ahead and make fantastic plans Then circumstances change – so it’s out of our hands. For some, time is a burden, no end in sight, A dark, empty tunnel, with no sign of light. For others, it’s a furious, frenetic race, A time of stress, at a dangerous pace. If only, somehow, a way could be found To slow down this relentless merry-go-round? As you flop in that chair, so comfy and deep, Close your eyes, but don’t fall asleep. Switch off the mobile, clear your mind, Relax, lie back, and try to find, Amidst the noise of a bustling home, A moment of stillness for you alone, A deep well of calm, to show you how To value your time in the here and now.

spring to life smoothie

In my new life, as I study naturopathic nutrition, teach at the Leith’s School of Food & Wine, run teenage courses and welcome private clients into my kitchen in the gaps - I need to be full of energy and zest for life! Victoria Boutenko, whose book ‘Green for Life’ is awesome, has lead me to enjoy a daily green smoothie for the past month. She is adamant that we need masses more fresh bitter greens in our lives and that they need to be whizzed in a highpowered blender with lots of fruit to make them palatable. Vitamix or nutribullet in hand and you’re off…. I have been adding fresh ginger and turmeric root to the mix, both amazingly powerful in themselves and think its fab – give it a go!

ingredients Banana Peeled orange (no pips!) Juice of ½ lemon or lime (to taste) 1” fresh ginger, peeled Huge handful of kale or spinach leaves (stalks removed) 1” fresh turmeric (often a bit fiddly to peel, so I just wash it!) Water w: WWW.BEINTHEKITCHEN.CO.UK

recipe No need for a recipe as such, just stuff your blender with the following ingredients, adding water up to about half way and whizz. Don’t forget to taste it, sometimes you might want to add more fruit (another or orange or a pear perhaps). It should be zingy, brilliantly green and delicious! note:: interchange green leaves with parsley, celery,

romaine lettuce etc - but don’t use Spring Greens - they are far too hard core even for me!!! e: BE@KASSAPIAN.COM

Bookham Wine Club ‘A Taste of Modern Lebanon’ with Wine Professional Richard Bost on Monday 13th May 2019 When one thinks of wine producing regions, seldom is Lebanon at the top of the list. Yet, few places in the world have a longer tradition of wine making. Wine has been made in Lebanon for at least 5,000 years since the Phoenicians domesticated grapes. Our presenter and wine expert, Richard Bost has spent a great deal of time exploring the region, and the Bekaa Valley in particular, where 80% of Lebanese wines are produced. During the evening members will enjoy six wines carefully chosen by Richard, accompanied by his amusing repertoire of fascinating facts and anecdotes. For wine lovers, an evening not to be missed. Following in June, the theme for our meeting is ‘What! Moldovian Wines,’ and on Friday, July 26, the Club, in co-operation with the Association of Wine

Educators, will be holding their special Summer Event; a tutored wine tasting of 25 wines, led by wine expert Heather Dougherty, followed by a Hog Roast and music. If you would like further information on these events, or any of the Club’s activities, please visit our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or contact: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk

Wonderful Wine Club in Bookham We had the pleasure of going along to the Bookham Wine Club in April. We were greeted by members on our arrival and all the guests were welcomed by the Chairman when he opened the meeting. We were seated at a table with Kate & Claudio Ramponi, who had invited us and a gentleman called Michael Viney. His name did make me smile! The speaker was Angela Bawtree, one of the countries leading Wine & Spirit Educators. Her theme for the evening was “Current trends in the Wine World”. She discussed the growing trend for organic wine, biodynamically produced wine, the move away from oak ageing to more traditional storage methods to enable the true flavour of the grape to come through to name just some of the topics covered! It was very interesting; presented in a very down to earth way. My fears of a

40 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

very highbrow talk about really expensive wines were soon dispelled. Throughout the evening, we tasted 6 wines, which Angela explained about as each one was served. She told us about the grower, the methods used, the grapes, where we could buy the wines & how much we could expect to pay. I was pleasantly surprised to find the wines ranged in price from £9.99 to £19.99 and were available from M&S to independent wine merchants. It was a very pleasant way to spend an evening. If you like wine and fancy a very relaxed and enjoyable way of learning more, I can fully recommend this friendly local club. You would be made very welcome. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Memories of Ashtead A Surrey Village in World War II

After this year’s AGM in March, Leatherhead & District Local History Society Chairman John Rowley and Ashtead school archivist Patricia Jenkins told the story of how they researched and eventually published their book Memories of Ashtead in World War 2. They explained how it gradually took shape as a result of research and interviews over several years beginning in May 2012. At that time John contacted M e r e d i t h Worsfold, son of a well-known builder of homes in Ashtead before and after the war. The initial enquiry was specifically about flat concrete Edwardian house roofs in Albert Road but from August 2013 he and Patricia began framing ideas for the book. They began collecting available local resources such as the Ashtead Residents Association’s own on-line record A Village; school logs and memoirs, and wartime marriages from the St Giles Church Marriage Register. They investigated the Ashtead War Memorial page on the L&DLHS website, the L&DLHS map of local bombings, other contemporary maps and aerial photographs, and official war diaries of the Royal Norfolk Regiment and the Canadian Signals Corps, the two primary military units billeted in Ashtead during World War 2. In November 2013 they contacted Ann Williams, née Astridge, daughter of a well-known Ashtead family, in Calgary, Canada, and she helped with extensive research

44 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

and interviews of veterans and the British girls who had married them and emigrated after the war. From July 2014, John was busy transcribing details of some 40 such weddings of local women and the following year he and Patricia hit the jackpot when they secured typed records of the Canadian War Diaries. From then on it was a matter of continuous interviews and contacts with anyone and everyone with a story to tell about wartime in Ashtead. Eventually the book

emerged from this long process at the end of 2018 and went on sale soon afterwards. Copies are available from local bookshops and from Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage, Church Street following its refurbishment. For more information on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Heads, Shoulders, Hands ... & Computers? Help with taking care of yourself while you use your computer

Have you ever considered just how much time you spend working on your computer? Whether it be sitting at a desk or having a notebook on your lap in front of the TV, the average person spends hours a day in front of their computer and at some point it can take a physical toll on the body. These days repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are not uncommon and they can have a lifelong impact. Which is why it is important to have yourself set up in the best way to avoid it. The first consideration you should make is the eye level of your screen. Your monitor or notebook should be positioned, so your eye level lines up with the top of the display, at arm’s length away from your body. This way your neck can be relaxed, not needing to strain or have your shoulders hunch over. In stock we have a variety of height adjustable monitors, these are really easy to adjust the height and even tilt the monitor and are especially great if the computer is shared, that way whoever is using the machine can adjust it for themselves. Using a notebook at eye level can be a little trickier, but it is equally important. There is a preference these days to use notebooks on our laps or lying down and if you stop and look at yourself you may find you are hunched over trying to look at the screen. Having a notebook stand will lift your machine up and allow you to sit with a straighter back. Avoiding strain on the shoulders, neck and upper back, all round so much better for you and your computer too as this will give the machine better airflow and prevent overheating. Typing and mouse movement is a very common cause of RSI and there are some easy steps that can help you combat RSI. A mouse mat with a wrist support can aid in resting your wrist at a better angle or there are a variety of more ergonomically designed mice for less strain on the hand. This is the same for keyboards, adding a palm rest or purchasing a keyboard with one can make a massive difference for your wrists and support them better while you type. Finally though none of us want to hear it, sometimes the best way to take care of yourself is to take a break from the screen, with so many hours spent staring at it you are straining your eyes and your body. Just taking five to ten minutes away from the screen, stretching your body or going for a short walk can make a big difference to your overall wellbeing.

This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

The School of Stitchery & Lace part Bookham’s heritage Nigel Price is the volunteer archivist at The Grange and has spent hours digging through ageing documents in the new Heritage Room

Queen Mary’s nightdresses, letter for royal ladies in waiting and beautiful hand embroidered textiles. This is what you can see at The Grange’s exhibition on the history of ‘The School of Stitchery and Lace’. The latter was the original name of The Grange and was set up in 1938 as a pioneering organisation offering training to young women with physical disabilities so that they could earn their own living The Heritage Room was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and brings the story to life in a multimedia display and I should know – I’m the volunteer archivist! I’ve ploughed through 50 years of press cuttings, letters from royal households ordering night attire and embroidered gifts and I’ve delved into the history of The Grange’s building and its owners. We don’t know exactly when the house was built but local historian Vivien White has found maps showing a

building on The Grange’s site as far back as 1614. We’d love to know more. Since the Heritage Room was opened by the Duke of Gloucester, several people have kindly donated items made at The School of Stitchery and Lace and others have shared their photos and memories. We’d love to hear from you if you have photos, reminiscences or items made here. We’re open on Tuesday afternoons - why not have cream tea in our Simply Scones café first. Friday mornings after our new Cuppa & Cake coffee morning 10am to 11.30am History and hobby groups welcome any time by appointment. You can also hire the Heritage Room for meetings. Please book on 01372 452608. Nigel Price

The Rotary Club of Bookham & Horsley Making a Difference in the Community We welcomed 4 new members this spring!

As a direct result of the ‘get to know Rotary in your community’ campaign last autumn, we were delighted to formally welcome 4 new Club members at our late March Charter anniversary meeting. Shown here with current president Barry Davies are Dawn Pearce, Paul Power, Martin Cannon and Tim Bass. This quartet say they were attracted by the very warm welcome received at trial evenings with the Club and a proactive programme of events this year plus our initiatives to help the local community. As an example, the Club recently had installed two new picnic tables at the rebuilt play grounds at the KG5 site in Effingham. For 2019 we have instigated a new mix of weekly meetings which sees us reduce formal speaker-meal sessions in favour of more informal and flexible gettogethers and local visits. These will include skittles and quiz evenings at local pubs, plus evening visits to Polesden Lacey, a turkey farm and a nature walk!

58 Looklocal Magazine - May 2019

This year has already seen two regular fund-raising quiz and bridge nights raise over £2,000 for charity, whilst our very varied stand-out talks have included the life of a Premiership football ref (from Bookham!), memories of a student trip to the USSR in the 1960s and the life and loves of the Duke of Wellington! Our new recruits underline our core message that a really positive experience awaits you at Rotary -whether as a Club member or just if you help out occasionally - for example with our Christmas fund-raising and supporting our events. Why not join a trial Club evening, or simply join our mailing list for occasional updates? To do this or to get in touch and to see what’s coming up, see www.bookhamandhorsley.rotaryweb.org or contact our secretary Mark Secker on 01372 458733 or mark.secker@outlook.com.

Leatherhead Probus

fabulous Fundraiser

In April, Look Local were invited to join Leatherhead Probus Club for lunch at Tyrells Wood Golf Club. Whilst Probus meet every month, this particular event was a fundraiser in aid of the Lord’s Taverners charity. The Lord’s Taverners is the official charity for recreational cricket and the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity. Its charitable objective is to ‘give young people a sporting chance’. Attending the lunch were many members, their wives and guests as well as several celebrity Lord’s Taverners. See how many you can name from the photograph shown! After the chance to have a drink and a mingle we all sat down to a superb 3 course lunch. I was seated with a lovely group of people, some members and some Probus guests and we all had a great time chatting and exchanging news and views. The celebrities were all seated on their own table and by the looks of things they were all having a great time catching up with each others news. They obviously all know each other well and appeared to enjoy themselves as much as the rest of us. I felt very honoured that we had our very own celebrity on our table (See photo). Yes our very own Jimmy Greaves aka Jack McClean. According to Jack’s wife, Betty (on Right in photo) he gets asked for his

autograph wherever they go. An obliging gentleman, Jack always says Yes!. Responding “I’ll be happy to sign my autograph for you, but I’m not Jimmy Greaves”!! For our interest and entertainment, the guest speaker was Inspector Ken Wharfe MVO, ex-SAS and the police protection officer responsible for Lady Diana and subsequently Princes William & Harry. His talk was amusing and enlightening. He spoke eloquently about his time with the princess and whilst he was quite discreet with his anecdotes, we did get a glimpse into his world as it was then! At the end of the afternoon there was also the chance to buy his book and have it signed (by Ken Wharfe, not Jack!!). As part of the fundraising there was an auction and a raffle, with some fabulous prizes up for grabs. The event raised over £4000 for the charity. An amazing amount! Well done to Leatherhead Probus and there supporters for raising such valuable funds for such a great charity. Leatherhead Probus is celebrating its 50th year this year. They meet for lunch on the first Tuesday of the month at Tyrells Wood Golf Club. If you are interested in joining or coming along as a guest contact Jon McCarthy on 07947 361 406 or email membership@ probusclubleatherhead.org.uk

Dog Safety 2019

The internet and social media can offer a frenzy of scare stories of people stealing/poisoning dogs and it is not uncommon for the police to receive calls from dog owners worried about stories of travelling criminals targeting dogs or leaving chalk marks outside properties where there are dogs inside. Well-meaning people share these stories to make others aware but, sadly, often only spread “urban myths” that cause dog owners unnecessary stress and anxiety. Here are some basic precautions that dog-owners should always consider:• Never leave your pet tied-up unattended; such as outside shops for example. • Make sure your dog is wearing a collar and ID tag when in a public place, as you are now required to do by law. Include your surname, telephone number, address and full post code and if there’s room, put ‘microchipped’ on the tag if your dog has a chip. • Ensure your dog can be permanently identified by its microchip or tattoo. A microchip is normally sufficient to identify your pet if it does become lost or stolen. • Ask your vet to check your dog’s microchip every year to ensure your details are accurate and up-to-date. • Clean tattoos with surgical spirit regularly. • From 6 April 2016, all dogs must be microchipped and registered to an approved database by the time they are eight weeks old. Puppies can usually be microchipped from four weeks of age depending on their size, so ensure this is done as soon as possible. • Keep all documentation relating to your dog(s) in

a safe place. Include clear photos of front and side profiles of your dog. Make a note or take a picture of any unusual markings. • Be cautious when choosing someone who will care for your dog(s) while you are at work, in hospital or on holiday. Be clear about when the dog will be handed over and who will collect it. • Use a registered boarding kennel or professional dog carer with documentation to this effect unless you know someone who is trustworthy that will care for your dog in your absence. • Train your dog not to go out of your sight on walks. Use an extending lead if the dog does not comply. Vary your walk times and routes. • Beware of strangers who show interest in your dog and never give any details about your dog. Don’t allow strangers to have their photograph taken with your dog. • Ensure your garden or yard is secure. Check it regularly for wear and tear or gaps. It should keep your dog in and trespassers out. Keep your dog in view when it goes out into the garden and don’t leave it unattended. Also - some more generic advice about staying safe can be found here - www.surrey.police.uk/cp/crimeprevention/violence/stay-safe/ Basically subject areas include - Be prepared; Be assertive; Be aware; Trust your instincts; Make a plan; Be vigilant.
