Welcome to the may issue!
What an absolutely wonderful time of year this is! Plenty of pretty blossoms on the trees locally, longer days with brighter evenings and all being well, some better weather in store too! With this in mind, I’m happy to report that Bookham Open Gardens will soon be upon us. A date for your diary maybe? That’s next month on 26th June. See page 16 for details. And if you happen to be gifted with green fingers, maybe you can spare a few plants from your garden to contribute to The Grange’s new Sensory Garden which is in need of some additions. Please see page 25 if you are able to help. News from a few art related events / projects this month too; art-rabble.org is a local, social enterprise who sell fine art prints by artists with disabilities. These artists are truly inspirational so please do take a moment to find out more by turning to page 22. It is great to see our What’s On pages over-flowing with lovely local events I hope you will find something of interest, turn to pages 28/29 for this. And one extra lovely event is the Leatherhead Art Trail which is such a fabulous way to spend a day or two! We really do have many very talented local artists who deserve our support, highly recommended. The BRA bring us news on Plastic Free Bookham on page 36, what a great initiative this is. And finally, we have two great competitions this month as well; our ever-popular Cash Prize competition and also the chance to win a great little book by Ted Macauley, a mustread for any F1 fan! I’ll leave you to discover more… Wishing you all a great month, With Best Regards,
Ros

A community fridge takes food which would otherwise go to waste and makes it available to anyone who can use it. Mid Surrey Community Fridges (MSCF) operates 17 Community Fridge sessions and Mobile Fridge Stops each week, at locations as far apart as Ewell and Capel; where they have become important meeting places for regulars and often a place where people can get social support and advice. MSCF collects food from all the major supermarket chains in the area and many independent businesses. At the heart of MSCF is a team of dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who keep the show on the road, this includes Frontline- drivers, hub assistants, and Back office - warehouse assistants, and admin assistants (various departments). We are always looking for volunteers across all areas. Currently we are desperately in need of Warehouse and Van loading assistants. This can be from as little as a couple of hours a week. Please contact volunteers@midsurreycommunityfridges.co.uk for more information or to apply. It really will make a difference to the environment and your community.

Carrot Sweet Potato and Feta Fritters A TAS TY SNACK OR A LIG HT VEGETARIAN MEAL Serves 4 - Preparation Time 30 minutes, plus draining time
INGREDIENTS • 800g carrots • 2 large potatoes • 1 large onion • 600g sweet potatoes • 5 medium free-range eggs • 200g feta, crumbled • 6 tbsp wholemeal flour • 25g fresh coriander, chopped • 2 tbsp cumin seeds • 300ml vegetable oil • Green salad, lime wedges and yogurt to serve
METHOD Peel and grate the carrots, potatoes, onion, and sweet potatoes. Place them into a colander or a large sieve over the sink with a big pinch of salt, and leave to drain for 30 minutes. Take a large bowl and in it combine the eggs, feta cheese, flour, coriander, and cumin seeds. Beat with a fork until well mixed. Squeeze as much liquid from the grated veg as you can, pressing down hard into the colander or sieve for 1-2 minutes, then add the grated veg to the egg mixture. Stir to combine well and season generously. Heat the oven to 150C/fan130C/gas 2. Heat the oil in a wok or deep saucepan to 180°C, or until a cube of bread sizzles. Put dollops of the mix into a slotted spoon and lower into the hot oil. Cook 2-3 at a time: fry for 1-2 minutes, then turn the fritters over and repeat until golden. Put on a plate and keep warm in an oven set to low.

BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS DAY SUNDAY 26TH JUNE, 10AM – 5PM
Do come and join in this annual event where lots of people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way. This year we are featuring around 14 varied and attractive private gardens, including two who are opening for the first time. In addition, we welcome back Polesden Lacey Infants School (after an absence of some years), the Grange Centre (with its Victorian walled garden) and Little Bookham Allotments. As usual, our garden owners will give you a warm welcome and provide you with the opportunity to pick up ideas for your own garden, answer your questions or you can simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The gardens come in all shapes and sizes, some formal, some more laid-back, and some with wildlife friendly planting and habitats. You’ll also find fruit and vegetables in abundance at the Grange and the Allotments and some gardens. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall where delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks will be served throughout the day and there will be plants for sale. In addition you can visit the Country Market stall.
Find out more about gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid May from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. Sorry there will be no minibus service this year. Why not cycle, share a car, or just see how far you get walking. As you go between gardens, do look out for beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Tickets on sale from 23rd May: £7 in advance: • The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd, Effingham (event sponsors) • Wishing Well, 7 High Street • Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade, Leatherhead Rd • Old Barn Hall office, Church Rd, KT23 3PQ. Tel: 01372 456307 (open Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30 - noon) • Village Day, Sat 18th June, on the field On the day you can buy tickets (£8) at the Old Barn Hall and from the gardens themselves. Children under 16 are free, as are carers of wheelchair users (reduced rate of £5). Regret no dogs, other than assistance dogs. Password Security AAlmost every day we have clients calling up and needing our help ASAP because their email accounts have been compromised. A scammer has gained access to their email account and started sending out malicious emails and gaining access to personal information. Most of the time the user hasn’t done anything wrong to allow access by the scammer. So, what went wrong and how did this happen? One simple mistake that so many computer users still make. An insecure password! Using a simple password and then using that same password for multiple websites is an almost guaranteed way to make it easy for scammers to access your email or other accounts. It’s almost every week we hear about another large organisation’s data leak leading to more logins and passwords being revealed to scammers. Often these leaked passwords find their way onto the dark web and scammers then try using each leaked password to gain access to email accounts. If you want to check and see if any passwords of yours have been leaked you can use the website; haveibeenpwned. com to check. If you enter your email address the website will let you know if you have ever been part of a data breach or passwords leak. If you have don’t panic, almost everyone at some point in their digital life will have a password leaked. The website will tell you on what date the information was leaked. If you haven’t updated your email password since the latest leak and you do use the same password for other accounts then we would recommend updating your email password as soon as you can to a new unique password and remember to use symbols, capital letters and numbers to keep it as secure as possible. Making sure your email passwords are not being used for any other websites or services is your best way to stay secure. Really it’s best practice to use a different password for each service or online account you have, to protect yourself. The only problem you can have is that this can lead to a new issue; Remembering all these different passwords. To help with this we would recommend using a Password Manager. A service that stores your passwords, auto-fills them onto the webpage for you and even informs you if they are at risk. We have partnered with a leading password security company so we can provide and help get you set up with a password manager that will help keep you secure. We can offer a full service where we help get your passwords updated and set up in a secure password vault and show you how to better manage your passwords. If you are interested then just give our sales team a call and we can send y ou more information on what we can offer and how we can help you.

A group of volunteers has recently taken on the project to renovate the Sensory Garden within the grounds of The Grange at Bookham. The garden was originally created in 2011, around an existing rectangular pond. Raised beds were added along with wooden arches, a new pavilion, which is now used as a pottery studio, and lots of plants. Sensory gardens are planted with sight, sound, taste, smell and touch in mind. The original planting included heuchera and salvia, which stimulate the senses through the colour of their flowers and foliage; rosemary for its smell and taste, as its highly fragrant leaves can be used in cooking; lavender and honeysuckle for their wonderful scent, and stachys, with its lovely downy leaves that are soft to the touch. 10 years on and the garden has significantly matured, and many of the larger shrubs have outgrown their spaces. Sadly, the wooden arches have rotted and have had to be

removed. The new gardener has been busy and when the volunteers arrived for their first look at the project, new metal arches had replaced the wooden ones, and many of the climbing plants had been given a serious prune. The volunteer group got going early in January and have spent most of their time to date cutting back all the larger shrubs, pruning the roses, weeding all the beds, and trying to identify some of the plants which are starting to grow. The initial plan is to maintain the garden while the plants reveal themselves, and then add plants as the year progresses. There is plenty of room for additional planting and therefore the group is asking for donations of plants, and bulbs (which have finished flowering) which fit in with the sensory theme. Please contact Hilary at hrnicholls15@gmail.com if you have any suitable plants going spare at any point during the growing season.

THE MEETING PLACE The crisis in Ukraine has brought many refugees into England. On Saturday 26th March around 100 people gathered at the Meeting Place interested in looking at ways to help locally. Further Saturday morning meetings are scheduled. One way in which we can help is through our Language Hub. Classes for those whom English is not their first language are very busy and with the possibility of more people keen to attend we are in need of more people who are TEFL trained to join our team. If you can help, do get in touch.
COFFEE SHOP - 2nd April was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our 10+1 Anniversary of
the opening of the coffee shop. Many of our regulars were there as well as past and present volunteers and people who have supported this initiative over the years. The cake was made by The Grange cake making team who excelled themselves by using our logo on flags round cake. ANNA CHAPLAINCY - is a wonderful initiative to be able to go out to those we know from the past and also those referred to us who are perhaps no longer able to get out. The Memory Gatherers sessions are still running regularly to help older people to put together a scrap book of memories for their families. This is a very enriching thing to do and there are sessions on 6th and 27th May 10th and 24th June and 1st July. For more information see below.

Hopes for Hazel Dormice
as Hedgerows Grow Across North Downs Surrey Wildlife Trust trains young people in hedge laying and planting SWT Hedge Laying057©Jon Hawkins
Surrey Wildlife Trust has trained more than 100 volunteers to invigorate the growth of hedgerows across the North Downs in Surrey and give hope to iconic hazel dormice. The new volunteer task force has surveyed an incredible 27km of hedgerows and planted and laid 2km, learning historic countryside skills so they can create beautiful hedgerows to help populations of dormice expand. Hazel dormice are golden-brown, 6-9cm in size, have large black eyes, a furry tail, and spend all their time in small family groups above ground in hedgerows and trees. With long toes and sharp claws, they are acrobatic climbers, so well suited to life within a dense bushy hedgerow. Since 1945 half of hedgerows have disappeared from the landscape & 93% of the county’s remaining hedgerows are now in poor condition. The loss & fragmentation of hedgerows has meant a decline of more than 50% in the UK population of hazel dormouse. Even small gaps in a hedgerow could be a big problem for dormice, isolating populations and threatening the adorable species to extinction. But now Surrey Wildlife Trust is training a workforce to reverse hedgerow declines. From
32 Looklocal Magazine - May 2022
November to March, the hedge laying, and planting season is in full swing. Katy Fielding, Hedgerow Heritage project officer at Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: ‘Hedgerows are like a silver bullet for climate change and wildlife. They already store nine million tonnes of carbon in the UK and take up a lot less space than forests. Put simply, hedgerows provide one of the most convenient and compact climate change solutions there is. ‘Protecting us from wind, flooding, drought, pollution and soil erosion, hedgerows also provide safe passage, shelter, roosting opportunities, an all-year-round food source for birds, bats, bees, butterflies and dormouse to name a few. They pack a big punch and we want to get everyone planting and laying hedgerows from back gardens to open farmlands.’ For further information about becoming a volunteer to help survey, plant or lay hedgerows across the North Downs as an individual or community group please visit www.saveourhedgerows.co.uk The innovative ‘Preserving Surrey’s Hedgerow Heritage’ project has in part been made possible by National Lottery players.

Members at the Club’s March meeting were treated to a ‘Master Class’ from Nina Cerullo when she presented ‘Wines of the Medoc’. Nina, a certified Bordeaux Wine Educator and Ambassador for the wines of the Medoc, ‘lifted the lid’ on Bordeaux’s best-known appellation, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the region and the diversity of styles the appellation has to offer. Plus six excellent wines to taste and enjoy.
Monthly presentations and tastings continue through the year. In April, Pippa Hayward revealed the versatility of Grenache, one of the most widely distributed grapes in the world, and at our May meeting Abbie Bennington makes her first visit to reveal the delights of today’s Chilean wines. In June we stay in South America for a visit to Brazil when Nicholas Corfe, owner of ‘Go Brazil Wines’ - UK’s only importer of Brazilian wines demonstrates the strength and depth of today’s wine making in Brazil …along with six stunning wines to try! REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE IN BOOKHAM AND NEARBY!
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle around Bookham and nearbty
This information is being provided to you by Plastic Free Bookham who may be contacted on pfcbookham@gmail.com or via the form below should you have any queries. The simplest thing you can do to ‘reduce’ is to take a refillable coffee cup and water bottle around with you and remember to take reusable bags and refillable containers with you when you go to the shops. A major recent development is that many branches of supermarkets like the Co-op (including Bookham!), Sainsburys and Tesco now offer soft plastic recycling and this is a welcome option to avoid some of the sorting needed for the Terracycle collections – a few Bookham Terracycle collections are still listed. You can also try the Surrey Recycles search tool. * please note that similar options for our neighbours in Guildford Borough are available. Click here for details To find out what to do with any item, try the search tool below. Start typing in the ‘Search’ box. The tool immediately shows you all the entries with the search phrase in them. You can click in the right-hand column to see more details of what your options are. Plastic Free Bookham is delighted to relaunch its search tool developed in conjunction with Les Huett of BRA, now updated to try and keep even more stuff from being thrown away. You can find the tool at https://recycle.bookhamresidents.org.uk/ or scan the QR code below. The simplest thing you can do to ‘reduce’ is to take a refillable coffee cup and water bottle around with you and remember to take reusable bags and refillable containers with you when you go to the shops. We are now listing more ‘reuse’ options and even include the possibility of going to a Repair Café, as well as some more specialized recycling schemes. We would welcome additions to the list from you. Any entries underlined are clickable links to find out more. A major recent development is that many branches of supermarkets like the Co-op (including Bookham!), Sainsburys and Tesco now offer soft plastic recycling and this is a welcome option. Book Reviews MAY 2022 ‘Still Life’ by Sarah Winman (paperback £8.99) One night in 1944 a chance encounter in war-ravaged Italy changes the lives of young soldier Ulysses Temper and older art historian Evelyn Skinner. They return to London after the war, Ulysses to the East End pub he called home, Evelyn to her role as part-time lecturer at the Slade School. Although seemingly worlds apart, the bond forged in that long night endures for decades. Ulysses’ world is expanded and shaped by all that he has learned from Evelyn. The beautiful, loving tale of their lives is a joy to read. ‘The Wolf in the Woods’ by Dan Brotzel (paperback £8.99) Colleen and Andrew head to Cornwall for a teetotal week in a cottage to rejuvenate their struggling marriage. The lane damages their car as they arrive and the sea is nowhere to be seen, but they’re staying positive and pretending they’re not dying for a drink. As the days go by, the landlord, Wolf, makes his eccentric presence felt, the car is not bouncing back, and getting away from it all turns out to be more complicated than they expected. Full of humour, enjoyable twists and relatable family dynamics, The Wolf in the Woods is a playful read with a sinister edge to its breezy character, much like Wolf himself. ‘Moonlight and the Pearler’s Daughter’ by Lizzie Pook (hardback £14.99) Set towards the end of the 19th century , the Brightwell family has sailed from England to make their new home and fortune in Western Australia. Ten years later and Charles Brightwell, now a most prolific pearler, has gone missing from his ship and Eliza is convinced there is more to the story and refuses to believe her father is dead, but she soon learns that the truth can cost more than pearls. The book follows Eliza on her quest for truth, in an era, location and culture where young ladies are meant to behave. You can feel the heat and see the dirt in this well-written novel. Without question Eliza is the lead and stand-out character, she feels real, brave, scared, unsure and warm. A definite read for the summer.

flower BOOKHAM
CLUB
Bookham Flower Club is up and running and thriving again. The members have been enjoying demonstrations of floral art by a variety of excellent presenters. They give good tips and advice, name the flowers and foliage whilst producing five or six beautiful large arrangements around a theme. New members are always made welcome and soon make friends. Members
can enter the club’s monthly competition illustrating that month’s title in flowers and foliage. It is interesting how many different interpretations there can be! The different classes of ability give everyone a chance to win but also to learn and progress. Occasional workshops help with this too. For some, just the enjoyment of flowers with those with similar interests is enough.
Our next meetings are Mondays 6th June and 4th July at 2.00pm in the Old Barn Hall in Church Road, Great Bookham. Do give us a try as a visitor for just £8. Just turn up on the day or for more information email us at: bookhamflowerclub@gmail.com

SIGNING OF ARMED
FORCES COVENANT
BY HEAD OF SURREY FREEMASONS
Col Patrick Crowley MBE, DL & Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons
The Armed Forces Covenant has been signed by Col Patrick Crowley MBE, DL and Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons, at Holy Trinity Church in Guildford. The Ceremony was attended by local dignitaries from across Surrey, including Councillor Sushila Abraham, the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston. The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge with the Nation that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve with their lives. It focusses on helping members of the armed forces community have the same access to government and commercial services and products as any other citizen. This support is provided in many areas including education and family well-being, having a home, starting a new career, access to healthcare, financial assistance, and discounted services. The Covenant supports serving personnel, service leavers, veterans, and their families,

and is fulfilled by the different groups and communities that have committed to making a difference. Surrey Freemasons have now become one of those groups. At the ceremony, Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons, said: “It is a great pleasure for me to sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the United Grand Lodge of England. Our Lodges, through the centuries, have always had a close relationship with those who serve in the armed forces. Servicemen have found that our values of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity are a natural fit with their own and many ex-servicemen comment that the camaraderie they find in a Lodge is second only to that they have experienced whilst serving. It is also true to say that the experiences and friendships that they form help a much wider cross-section of society better understand the military, its ethos, and its purpose. I am delighted to have formally recognised, in (the signing of) this document, the relationship that has always existed between our great institutions.” Colin Pizey - Comm’s Officer

Celebrating
40 YEARS of the
FAIRFIELD CENTRE!
Fairfield Centre 40th Jim, the longest standing Fairfield Centre member cutting the celebratory cake
Fairfield Centre 40th - members enjoying the celebrations
This March marked 40 years since the opening of Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead. Originally opened as the “Leatherhead Day Centre” in 1982, the Fairfield Centre has offered a home from home and place for the older residents of Mole Valley to come together to socialise, exercise, learn new skills, partake in activities and make new friends for two score years. To celebrate, during the week commencing 28th March the Fairfield Centre ran daily, pre-booked celebratory three course lunches and additional entertainment for its members. Celebratory entertainment included an 80s themed quiz, “Songs you remember” singalong and a reminiscence session to name but a few. These sessions ran in addition to a number of the Fairfield Centre’s usual activities, including exercise, IT and art classes, as well as word games and puzzles sessions. MVDC’s Executive Head of Service (Communities), Rachel O’Reilly said, “For 40 years now we have been fortunate enough to have the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead to provide a welcoming environment for Mole Valley’s older residents. The Centre delivers a stimulating programme of daily activities, as
well as delicious, healthy and affordable meals. The ongoing pandemic has really shone a light on the importance of social connections for health and wellbeing. Whilst our older residents were advised to shield or reduce their number of contacts, the Fairfield Centre switched to a programme of Zoom get-togethers to help keep members connected and boost their spirits. During this period they also conducted over 7,000 wellbeing calls to their members, offering a friendly voice during a difficult time. As restrictions have been eased Mole Valley District Council have gradually reopened the Centre; from our outdoor ‘Terrace Café’ last April, through to today, where we have been running our programme of varied activities, entertainment and nutritious hot meals for many months now. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fairfield Centre team and its volunteers for their hard work and dedication in supporting Mole Valley’s older residents.” If you would like to find out more about the Fairfield Centre and becoming a member, please call 01372 376058, email Fairfield.Centre@molevalley.gov.uk or visit molevalleylife.co.uk.

Walking the Dog Follow some basic rules and you and your dog will enjoy some fantastic walks around our area this summer. The Dog Walking Code for England and Wales was launched in 2015 to give concise, practical and positive advice and is endorsed by government bodies, farmers and the Kennel Club. Ensure your dog is under effective control which means: • you have a short lead with you and use it when needed - around livestock, near cliff edges, or where signage requests it for example. • you do not let your dog off the lead unless you keep him in sight and close enough to return to you on command. Prevent your dog from approaching horse riders, cyclists or other people and their dogs uninvited. Keep your dog with you on paths or access land and don’t let him stray onto crops, including fields of grass, fruit and vegetables. Never let your dog worry or chase wildlife or livestock. Follow advice on local signs to reduce disturbance to plants and animals. Stay safe around farm animals and horses: Stop, look and listen before entering a field: be aware of animals present. Always keep your dog on a short lead. Find the safest route around animals giving them plenty of space, using paths or access land where possible. Exit the area calmly and quickly if threatened, releasing your dog to make it easier for you both to reach safety. Always bag and bin your dog’s poo wherever you are. You can use any public waste bin or

your bin at home. Never leave bags of dog poo lying around, even if you intend to pick them up later. Containers and deodorised bags can make them easier to carry. Ensure your details are on your dog’s collar and he is microchipped, so you can be reunited quickly if he is lost. Keep your dog’s vaccinations and worming up-to-date. Ask your vet for more information. Contact your local authority or look out for signs, to get more information on what to do and where to go in your area. Watch out for yellow dogs! If you see a dog wearing a yellow ribbon, bandana or similar on his lead, he needs some space. Do not approach the dog or his people with your dog. The yellow indicates that their dog cannot be close to other dogs. The Yellow Dog Project is a registered charity created to bring awareness to dogs who need space while training, recovering from surgery, or being rehabilitated. For more information, and to get a free yellow ribbon for your dog, go to yellowdoguk.co.uk There’s a new code of practice for professional dog walkers. Developed in collaboration with Dogs Trust and RSPCA, it provides guidelines to ensure the highest standards of welfare and covers issues such as transport, exercise, and group walking. Garden Shed and Vehicle Crime NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION Hopefully, we can now start to look forward to some better weather as Spring is officially with us - at last!! We are also starting to see the world returning to something more like “normal” after the past two years of the Covid-19 pandemic and I am sure many people will be wanting to take advantage of being able to go out and about after enduring many restrictions? As summer approaches, however; if you decide to take advantage of the better weather by visiting some of the lovely beauty spots across Mole Valley, please remember not to leave any items of value in your vehicle. At this time of year, we generally start to receive reports of vehicles being targeted by opportunistic thieves and items (such as handbags, cash, cameras etc) taken from unattended vehicles - even if they were in the boot or hidden under the seats. We also tend to see a fairly constant (if low) level of reports about thefts of property - tools, gardening equipment, bicycles etc - from garden sheds and outbuildings. Please try to store your property securely. Although wooden sheds can never be made totally secure, a sturdy bolt and padlock does make you less likely to be targeted. Also, please consider security marking any high-value property or, if you are not overly worried about the actual appearance of a lawn mower etc, just painting your house number and postcode on the item can make it far less desirable to a would-be thief.
Another thing to consider is buying an inexpensive, battery-powered and motionactivated audible alarm to place inside the shed or outbuilding. If they are triggered by movement inside, the alarm will sound and quite often this gives the impression that it is connected to a main monitored alarm system. The batteries generally last about 12 months before they need to be replaced. As always, if you are going to be away from your home, please ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked and please don’t leave keys in the locks as this can be very tempting to a would-be burglar. Also, having some lights coming on using timers set to a staggered pattern can help to create an impression of occupancy and movement throughout a home. If you need to contact your local policing team, you can always email us at molevalley@surrey.police.uk or call 101 and ask to be put through to the Team. For all other non-emergency issues, please contact 101 or, in an emergency - or if you see a crime actually taking place - always call 999.
