Welcome to the November issue of Look Local! I guess it can’t be avoided for much longer, it will soon be the Christmas shopping season for real! I have a friend who, every year since I’ve known her, gets all her Christmas shopping not only done, but also wrapped up by the end of October. And every year, I think, how odd, and then a few weeks later, I’m really jealous, as I’m rushing about trying to get everything done and not miss anybody out. So this year - and yes, I know that I have already missed the end of October - I am going to aim for the end of November which will be a big step forward on previous years! I’ll let you know how I get on next month! Meanwhile, there are lots of Christmas fairs coming up locally, plus a big reminder about the very popular late night shopping event in the village in early December: a save the date notice is included. This is always a lovely evening, and for many, it marks the start of festive activities. We have an exciting ‘scoop’ this month, with news of a very prestigious London restaurant which is due to arrive nearby in Cobham shortly, and a great competition, with the chance to win a new book by motor racing legend, Damon Hill! Good luck to all who enter. Maybe this will be your first Christmas present ticked off the list if you win! I enjoyed visiting Bruce at his newly-refurbished Doggy Day Care recently. Maybe, like me, you spotted some work going on there over recent months? See our feature for details: it’s looking so smart for all their lucky canine clients. I’m running out of space here so I’ll sign off now. Have a great November, Bookham. Warm regards

ASK BRUCE:

GRASS SEED DILEMMA Reader Roger Trevit-Jones’ black labrador recently had an operation to remove a grass seed that had embedded in his paw and worked its way up his leg. Roger asks, ‘how can I stop this happening again?’ Grass seeds in dog paws are very common, regardless of the breed. In fact, flat-coated labradors are more likely to encounter them than their furrier friends, the labradoodles. If found quickly and removed straight away, however, they don’t usually present a problem. But prevention is better than cure. Avoid walking your dog in places with very long grass – if you can see it bending in the wind, it will probably be long enough to host seeds which could fall off into your dog’s paws. We deliberately keep our grass shorter than this at doggy day care to stop the grass seeding, and also to keep ticks at bay, as they love long grass.Walking in woodlands or in managed parks with short neat grass are great alternatives. After every walk, ensure you wash down and wipe your dog’s legs and feet and check their paws thoroughly, including underneath and on the top of the webbing between each toe. If you notice they are limping, the chances are the seed is already embedded, so take your dog straight to your vet. A more extreme solution is purchasing doggy boots. But personally, I’m not a big fan of these and neither are most dogs I know! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Bookham. L

ocal Bookham & Horsley Rotary Club member Sue Sheward MBE has recently been voted a director of the new global Rotary Action Group for Endangered Species (RAGES). The group has started with projects to raise awareness and protection for 3 animals facing extinction or severe threat: the Chipembere Reserve rhino, the pygmy elephant orphans and the Orangutan Project. Sue will look after the third. All details are at http://www.endangeredrag.org/ Sue is indeed an excellent choice: she is the founder and chairwoman of a Bookham-based charity fighting for the preservation and rehabilitation of the orangutans of Borneo (www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk ), her passion since starting the charity in 2000, following a holiday

to the island. The numbers of these delightful creatures has plummeted in recent decades due to the loss of their natural habitat, and Sue is determined to make a difference. She travels to Borneo 2-3 times a year to review operations and meet government officials, and last year was seen in several episodes of a Discovery Planet TV series about her charity. Interested in Rotary? Why not join us for a trial club evening, or simply join our mailing list for occasional updates? H

FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

aving spotted some work being done recently at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care in Cobham, I was keen to pop in and see what’s been happening since my last visit. First opened in 2009, the Bruce’s Doggy Day Care Cobham site has grown from a couple of huts and a few acres to the sophisticated, purpose-built 25-acre day care centre of today. It now boasts a total of five fields, each five acres in size, all with their own heated Scandinavian log cabins. There is a brand new reception and office, dog grooming parlour and a nursery area for puppies and small dogs. The site has also welcomed 10 new members of staff and three new doggy buses. When I chatted to Bruce, he said: “After opening our second site in nearby Ripley last year, it was time to turn our attention back to Cobham. Given business has been booming, with waiting lists for our services, it made sense to expand. Our day care centres have 32 staff and over 500 dogs of all shapes and sizes. Now we have expanded, we hope

to welcome another 300 dogs into our care.” The canine customers are collected in special airconditioned doggy buses from their homes in catchment areas around London** and Surrey*. They then spend the day at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care facilities having fun with their four-legged friends before being driven home, tired and happy. Proof that dogs can be a part of the lives of busy people, including full-time workers and commuters. It was a real pleasure to see the dogs having such a wonderful time. It never fails to amaze me how this fabulous care facility just keeps on going from strength to strength. They really do offer the ‘Gold Standard’ when it comes to canine care. Congratulations, Team Bruce! You should be very proud of your newly refurbished and extended facilities. Look Local highly recommends Bruce’s Doggy Day Care. AT FORTY! This example of friendship is heartwarming. I hope you enjoy reading about a Super-Dooper Surprise Birthday Challenge, which was set up by a group of local ladies for their lovely friend Rachel Slater to celebrate a special birthday recently

R

achel moved to Little Bookham Street with her husband Ian about 7 years ago. This was just before the birth of their daughter Sophie, and a few years later, their son Charlie arrived too. Both children now attend Eastwick School. ‘Rachel has made many close friends since moving to Bookham through a wide selection of groups and organisations. These include the NCT, her neighbours, Bookham Toddler Group (of which she was deputy chair for a year), Eastwick School (of which she is now a parent governor),

a local book club, BB Runners and Oasis at the Bookham Baptist Church. She has launched herself into Bookham life and the local community wholeheartedly, as well as working 3 and a half days a week at a company in London called PWC. She is a fabulously fun and loyal friend who will go the extra mile to help out. She is ruthlessly efficient and unfailingly reliable. She will always listen and gives sound and honest advice, often with a lovely chilled glass of wine!’ What a lovely lady she sounds! And what a fantastic idea to surprise her with this unusual birthday

challenge. Apparently, it took Rachel two hours to zoom around Bookham and complete the trail on her bike which had previously been decked out with streamers and a very attractive banner which read ‘40 and Hot, Buy me a Shot’ Brilliant!! Maybe you spotted her on the day? Clues had been placed around the village at many well-known venues. Local businesses joined in the fun and were more than happy to help out. Stops included Cascade in the High Street, Fine Fettle, Eastwick Infants School, Bookham Baptist Church, Bookham Library, The Vines Coffee Shop at the Vineries

Garden Centre, and the Howard of Effingham School. Her final clue directed her to the Windsor Castle pub where her friends waited with a welldeserved bottle of Prosecco and 40 presents as a reward for the 40 photos/’selfies’ that she had been tasked to take along the way. What a great idea this was, and a birthday that I am very sure Rachel will remember for many years to come! Well done to you all and thank you very much for telling us all about it! It’s my birthday next week... I think I’ll hide my bike, just in case!

HOME-MADE SMASHED PLANTAIN CHIPS Serves 1

I

am beside myself with excitement, following the revelations of this past month, and I’m spreading the word as fast as I can! I have been to a conference on ‘Reversing Alzheimer’s through lifestyle and nutrition’, swiftly followed by watching a series of 12 interviews with experts talking about their methods for reducing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia. See my website for more about this, but in the short term, the amazing powers of coconut oil are really coming out... and the more, the merrier. This recipe is so much fun and so good for you. Green plantains have beneficial resistant starch which is not digested like other carbs, but it passes instead through the body unchanged, like insoluble fibre. An aid for weight control, resistant starch increases fat burning and reduces sugar cravings.... what is there not to love! Head to LAYTON’S GREENGROCERS, where Ray is at the ready to make sure Bookham has a great supply of plantains. These crunchy golden treats are fantastic!

18 Looklocal Magazine - November 2016

BEINTHEKITCHEN.CO.UK BE@KASSAPIAN.COM 01372 803 821

INGREDIENTS:

1. 1 green plaintain, peeled and sliced into approximately ½ cm pieces 2. 2-3 tbsps coconut oil 3. Himalayan pink salt

METHOD:

1. Melt the coconut oil in a large frying pan. Add the plantain slices and fry over a medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side or until crisp and golden brown. 2. If you have quite thick slices, you may wish to use the end of a rolling pin to ‘smash’ the slices down so that they ‘squash’ a bit. Fry for a bit longer and you have a wonderful golden crunchy treat. 3. Sprinkle with salt and enjoy!

Bookham&HorsleyROTARY

Late spring through summer has seen a very full programme at your local Rotary Club, mixing social and fund-raising events as ever. Here’s a snapshot of what goes on: why not get involved, either as a member or occasional helper/friend? Back in April, we reported the very sad news of the death of our president, Peter Hudso, well-known and highly active in the local community. It is very fitting that since then, we have welcomed Peter’s wife Elizabeth as an honorary Club member and instigated a regional Rotary campaign to raise significant funds for Peter’s favourite chosen charity in his final year, Kids 4 Kids, helping villages tackle extreme poverty in Darfur, Sudan: http://www.kidsforkids.org.uk/ Fundraising took a more active course in June, with a team of club members cycling the Downs Link path as part of the Rotary Prostate Cancer Awareness day and raising £1,700 towards the cause. Our social evenings since the sell-out Gala Music evening in the spring have included ever-popular quiz and bridge evenings, and 12th November brunch at the

Barn Hall – catch it if this article arrives in time! Evening talks at our weekly meetings have ranged from the great (but less well-known) work of the Surrey Lowland Rescue unit, especially working with the police in locating missing people; a talk on South America, including a live tango lesson. We also gave a warm welcome back to our first gap-year student award-winner, Izzy Irwin, giving tales from her intrepid Operation Raleigh trip to Borneo, and much, much more. There is something for many of you at Rotary, whether as a Club member or if you just help out occasionally – for example with our Christmas fund-raising collections and supporting our events. Why not join us for a trial Club evening, or simply join our mailing list for occasional updates? gardening

MATTERS

So, winter approaches, if not already here, booo, boooooo. I detest winter, it has nothing going for it as far as I am concerned, & tidying up the garden is a thankless task in this season, principally because of the weather.

owever, if the focus is moved onto something lovely in a pot, at least we can get away with being neglectful in other areas and also have something beautiful to look at in our misery, so here we go… I have nothing against pansies - in fact, I use them a lot and love them for their cheeky faces - but there are other options too. The trick is to look towards winter beauty. I would probably try to avoid mixed planting because that always looks as if it has come straight out of a garden centre... although a ready-planted pot or basket is a nice quick solution if your time is at a premium. For the best effect, stick to one thing, and repeat it everywhere. Try Heuchera, whose foliage comes in several different colours – bright lime-green, brownish-red, reddishblack, golden yellow, to name but a few – and which look glorious when planted in groups. Also grasses,

H

such as Festuca glauca ‘Blaufuchs’, a lovely blue colour, or Pennisetum villosum, whose feathery white-green panicles turn purple with age, or Stipa calamagrostis, whose feathery growth persists well into winter. These grasses add welcome height to a space and waft gently...assuming it isn’t blowing a gale. Heathers are always a winner and come in a variety of pinks, purples and white. Choose perhaps Erica carnea ‘Loughrigg’ for its rose-pink to rosy-purple flowers and Erica carnea f. alba ‘Springwood White’ for its white flowers and mid-to-bright-green foliage. They also look very effective planted up in groups: aim for odd numbers – three or five of them in a pot of appropriate size really do look smart. Ditto ornamental cabbages, which are so much bigger and therefore you’ll probably only need three. I love these, although I know some people loathe them. Each to

his own…. however, if heathers and cabbages are too neat for you, try using Helleborus niger, the Christmas rose, whose large, white or pink-flushed white, bowl-shaped flowers have just about the right mix of controlled and relaxed. I’m no fan of ferns, apart from the way they unfurl, but a few of the evergreen variety can create an instant effect in pots, and they last for ages. And last but by no means least, you could buy some Cyclamen coum. Their gorgeous, rounded, evergreen leaves will provide interest throughout the autumn, and the delightful butterfly blooms will appear over winter and well into spring - white flowers flushed with purple, deep pink flowers with a purple blotch, rose-pink flowers marked with purple and white, soooo pretty. Hopefully, that’s provided some ideas, but the best advice is go with what you love, whatever the colour or shape. It’s your garden, after all…

FROM THE

SURREY

POLICE

Neil Clarke, 13363 Crime Reduction Advisor from the Eastern Division, discusses a number of different issues that have come to Surrey Police’s attention recently.

N

ormally at this time of year, I would focus on the “traditional” risks of criminal activity in the rush towards Christmas (rogue traders, pickpocketing, and opportunistic burglary) but this month, I would like to touch on a number of different issues that have come to our notice recently. Some of them are relevant to the time of year but others seem to have re-emerged for no apparent reason. First, we have seen a sporadic increase in “fishing devices” and card readers being used on ATM machines situated outside some banks and building societies. The slot where you insert your card and where the cash is dispensed should always be flush against the machine fascia. There should never be anything protruding or covering the card entry or cash dispenser. If you see something that doesn’t “look right”, don’t use the machine and report your concerns to the bank as soon as possible. We have also seen another spate of telephone fraud attempts, where people have received calls from someone pretending to be from the bank or building society and asking them to confirm their account details. Fortunately, the intended victims have not disclosed any confidential information but it is worrying that this is happening again, as there is always a chance that some people may be drawn in by this type of fraud. As a reminder, banks, building societies etc will NEVER ask for your personal details in a telephone call or email. Burglaries are not commonplace in Mole Valley but they do happen, and in most cases, entry has been gained via a ground floor door or window at the back of a house.

In nearly all of the cases that I have seen r e c e n t l y, entry was made easier because a side gate was not secured. Ideally, any side gate should have bolts and a padlock on the inside, and the main bolt should be at waist height to reduce the possibility of someone reaching over to slide it back. Also, making a house look occupied when no one is at home is a very effective deterrent. Using two or three simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern throughout your home can give a strong impression of occupancy. Purse theft and pickpocketing always seem to increase at this time of year too. Always keep handbags zipped up, preferably worn across your body with a long strap. Gentlemen should also consider where they keep their wallet, as the back pocket of trousers is not a good idea: it is easy to see and even easier to “lift”. Another spate of thefts has involved mopeds and scooters, where they have been left on driveways but not secured in any way. Ideally, scooters and mopeds should be kept in a secure location or, at the very least, chained and padlocked to make removal much more difficult. Also, registering a scooter or moped on a property database, such as Immobilise (with accompanying uploaded photographs), can be very helpful to police in reuniting recovered bikes with their rightful owners.

competition Answer the following question for the chance to win a copy of Damon Hill’s book “Watching the Wheels”

To emerge from the shadows of a famous and heroic father who was a double world champion and to take up where he left off was Damon Hill’s destiny after the tragic death of his dad Graham in an air crash. And to his complete credit, Damon, the only son ever of a Formula One champion to be champion too, has written an allaction and completely candid close-up of the trials and tribulations of his grand prix career. It is entitled “Watching the Wheels”, published by Pan MacMillan at £20, as a mark of his coronation as F1 king in 1996. I was there with him when he secured the title in Japan, writing as a columnist for the

Daily Mirror. Damon, a late entry into F1 at 32, won 22 of his 106 races, with 42 podiums and 20 pole placings, and he faced formidable race geniuses such as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. Now the exciting rerun of his life on and off the track, all penned by himself and in his own words, is a winner. Just like him. And I would like to offer a hardback copy of his book as a prize to be enjoyed and treasured. Answer the following question and it could be yours :

Seat Ateca

CAR REVIEW Ted Macauley test drives Seat’s first SUV, the Ateca, and lets us know what it has to offer...

M

y annual pilgrimage to Italy’s temple of grand prix racing to write up the showcase event is a perennial commuting problem, all of it my own fault and choice. That is because I prefer to live it up 90 minutes away from the Monza autodrome in one of the country’s finest, most stylish stopovers, the Lake Como-side Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio. Five-star plus…and that has been my choice - and my utter joy - for more than 25yrs. So much so, and so welcoming, that it is where Trophy Wife and I were married 13 years back. But getting to and from the circuit, travelling the perilously narrow and twisty waterside roads, always populated by corner-cutting, risk-taking motor bikes and cars with drivers who fancy their chances, has forever been a threat. It is not only vital to undertake the journey in the safety of a car burly enough to match anything that might, God forbid, hit it, but in one that exudes the sort of style and panache that show-off Italians love to drive, ride and be seen in. Over the years, I have enjoyed a variety of motors that all answered the above requisites and were familiar. This time round, I ventured on to completely new ground in a car I had

SPECIFICATION: Engine: 1.4TSI SE.BHP:150. Top speed 124mph. 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. MPG 52.3. Price £21,015. never even seen before. Chancy? Yes. But as it turned out it was my ideal partner. And what’s more, it revels in a five-star, ten-out-of-ten rating on the safety issue. It is the brand new Seat Ateca, the company’s first SUV, and based on the tried-and-tested Volkswagen platform, sharing a lot with the VW Tiguan, if a wee bit more petite. A proper crossover. It enters a massively contested market with well-established rivals galore, the product of Seat’s most recent update, market awareness and refocus not to be left behind in the chase for SUV superiority. And crucially, it boasts an attentiongripping starting price, allied to one of the best fuel economy returns of all. What more would you want? Okay, I know, the next question is: what is it like to drive? Here, I return to my commuting for four days to and from Monza, near Milan. It was perfectly behaved, an absolute treat. It drives well. It copes superbly and efficiently with the twists, bumps, ruts and smoother bits, and, as it had to undertake sharp braking for tight, blind corners, it responds contentedly and turns in as nippily as you want. Its dashboard showcase may not be as informative as, say, the Tiguan or a few other SUVs, but it is adequate, with big clear, logical dials

and an easy-to-operate and understand touchscreen feedback. All viewed from cushy seats with ample leg room for six-footers like me and our passengers. And just to make your journey, long or short, more acceptable, there are optional driver aids, such as full LED headlights, surround-view cameras and radar cruise. During traffic jam stops-and-goes, it will self-speed-up, self-brake and self-steer. So sit back and relax… which is exactly what I did. What to me does seem a bit stingy and mealy, despite Seat’s reputation for reliability, is the Ateca’s three year and 60,000 miles warranty when you measure it against the Kia Sportage’s seven-year, 100,000 mile warranty and Hyundai’s five-year unlimited mileage back-up for the Tucson. But hey, the tot-up of the plus points and its basic kerbside appeal, with handsome looks and a profile to admire, will make it a target for those of us with a keen sense of value for our outlay. It is destined to be a surefire winner, like Nico Rosberg was, ahead of three times champion Lewis Hamilton. This was all before my return trip, and there were envious glances towards the new baby Ateca as I parked proudly alongside the Rollers, Ferraris and Maseratis in front of the Serbelloni.

Scams and

POWER PROTECTION This guide was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. We have previously reported on the “We are from Microsoft” type telephone scams. However, the scammers are becoming much more confident and advanced in their approach. Quoting directly from our customers and their experience, this is how the call evolved… “Hello, we are from Microsoft and can see that you have a problem with your computer. We can also see that you have Bullguard for Internet Security and your support is from TecRes.”...Then they continue about the validity of the problem, and for just £400.00 they can resolve the problems. During the conversation, the scammers had full access to the customer’s machine without the customer’s permission. In one instance, they started deleting the customer’s data when they felt the conversation wasn’t going in their favour; in another, the scammers’ password protected the folders and files. We could see that the scammers had used a “standard” remote access bit of software, which they must have installed during an earlier call to set the scene for the second call. It is easy to over-analyse these situations, but please remember, Microsoft does not have your phone number and Microsoft does not call domestic users about computer problems. Should you receive a call of this nature, just say you don’t have a computer, otherwise they will continue to hound you. Microsoft updates: Microsoft is changing the way it distributes its updates, starting from October 2016. Previously, you could select which updates you wanted and which you didn’t,

but now they are combining them all together. This is more convenient, but it makes the download files much bigger than before, which means the updates may take hours to download. If you feel your computer is sluggish or very slow to turn off, it may be doing the updates, so just be patient.

Power Protection: Finally, in Leatherhead, we often suffer from power cuts and spikes. These can create havoc for your computer, causing hard drives to crash, power supplies to blow and motherboards to fry. To protect yourself against this damage and inconvenience, we stock an uninterruptable power supply and anti-surge unit which has its own rechargeable batteries inside. These are powerful enough to run your computer for several minutes in the event of a power loss and to suppress any power highs or lows. For around £100.00, they are great value items and may be worth considering.

RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The launch night for the Bookham Youth Project on July 18th was a great success. It was well-attended by folk from all stages of life within our community, all invested in improving the services for young people in the area. Oli Bell, the newly appointed Bookham Youth Worker, was on hand to share his background and the vision he has for the project. He was joined by his colleagues at the long-established and highly successful Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP) who are partnering with 3 local churches for the project: Bookham Baptist Church, Eastwick Road Church and St Nicolas’ Church. Oli has been working for LYP for many years but commenced his role within Bookham in September 2016 and is already off to a flying start. He is forging strong links with the Howard of Effingham School and surveying local young people about what they feel is wanted and needed in Bookham. Get involved! The youth project can’t happen without your help! Over the next weeks and months, there will be lots of exciting opportunities to get involved, both volunteering directly with the youth in after-school cafes, sports and lots of other events, as well as behind the scenes. If you’d like to find out more, please contact Oli at oli@ leatherheadyouthproject.com

Words by David Kid Jensen

The story behind a seasonal song Merry Christmas Everybody from Slade entered the astonishingly competitive chart in 1973, went straight in at Number 1 and went on to sell 1 and a quarter million copies. Having songs go straight to Number 1 was a rare accolade then: it was the first time that a song shot straight to the top, making the accomplishment even more special, because this was the first occurrence since the Beatles hit the top of the survey in 1969 with Get Back. Not bad when you consider that Noddy Holder, along with bassist Jimmy Lea and the legendary producer Chas Chandler, manager of Jimi Hendrix, based the melody from discarded songs written 6 years before. This success happened while Slade were at their peak of their powers, having chalked up 5 Number 1s before Merry Xmas was born. Incredibly, the organisation for monitoring air play and ensuring that compers received their fair dues told Slade that up to 42% of the world’s population could have listened to their song. The song was actually recorded in late summer at the Record Plant in New York City, right next door to where John Lennon was recording his album Mind Games. Jimmy reflected on his vision of the track, in which he wanted to remind people of a traditional British Christmas. “Economically, the UK was up the creek. The miners had been on strike, along with grave diggers, bakers and almost everybody else. I think people wanted something to cheer them up – and so did I. That’s why I came up with the line ‘Look to the future now, it’s only just begun.’ Once I got the line ‘Does your Granny always tell you that the old ones are the best’, I knew I’d got a right cracker on my hands.” A lovely understatement.

THE IVY

R E S TA U R A N T O P E N I N G I N C O B H A M

HERE’S A MOUTH-WATERING SCOOP TO SHOW THAT EXCLUSIVE NEWS IS NOT A FLEET STREET PREROGATIVE. I can reveal that one of the world’s best known celeb hotspots, an eatery of renown and fine quality, is planning to open up in Cobham’s High Street. The Ivy, central to the West End’s theatreland, has taken the first steps to seeking planning permission for a spring 2017 opening at what used to be La Rive. The umbrella company, Caprice, through The Ivy Collection, wants to refurb and open a cafe-style brasserie with all-day dining, open seven days a week. The art deco Ivy, with its smart-casual (no shorts) dress code, ranks alongside its super-class culinary cousins, Scotts, Sheekeys, Daphne and Le Caprice among others, as a glam stopover. And that is the style aim of this very, very welcome newcomer.

Remember, this is where you read it first.....

moleVALLEY WI

Report of meeting held on 11th October 2016 Our president, Meriel Sexton, welcomed everyone to the October meeting and wished everyone with an October birthday a very happy birthday. There had been an outing in September to Adam Henson’s Rare Breeds Farm which everyone had enjoyed. We were reminded of a few forthcoming events – fashion show in Claygate, Dorking Halls meeting, Emlyn Downs quiz evening and our own quiz night. Meriel had met a Canadian lady from Ontario who was very interested to find out about our WI; she is president of a WI but only has 8 members, and she was keen to know what we get up to. We have a homecraft evening on 18 October on skin care and an outing to Woking Theatre in April 2017 to see Funny Girl. Our talk this evening was given by the Rev. Dr Nicholas Henderson on ”Fortitude and Fancy”, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, two of the wives of Henry VIII. Catherine (1485-1536) was betrothed at the age of 3 to Arthur, Prince of Wales, Henry’s elder brother. They were married in 1501 but he died 5 months later. In 1507, she became the first female

ambassador in European history. She married Henry VIII subsequently in 1509. She served as Regent of England while Henry was in France, and during that time, England won the Battle of Flodden. In 1525, Henry became infatuated with Anne Boleyn (1501-1536), a lady-inwaiting to Queen Claude of France. Catherine had only given him a daughter, and Henry became dissatisfied at not having a son. He had their marriage annulled, and in 1533, he married Anne, who became Queen of England and gave him a daughter, the future Elizabeth 1, in July of that year. Henry was again disappointed not to have a son, and after 3 miscarriages, Henry started to court another lady-inwaiting, Jane Seymour. And so it went on. Mole Valley WI meets at Fetcham Village Hall on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.45. Our AGM will be held at our November meeting on 8 November with a silent auction. You will be made very welcome. Throughout the year, we have various activities available for members badminton, bridge, homecraft, bookclub, rambling, knit & natter, mah-jong and scrabble.
