Welcome to November!
My in-box tells me that Christmas is not that far away! Details of a whole collection of seasonal productions & events from groups & organisations like the The Yehudi Menuhin School as well as a selection of local Christmas Fairs and markets, have all made their way to my computer screen, which after last year, is very exciting indeed and I am delighted to share details with you in this issue… Michelle went on a very interesting visit to HMP Send this month! It was touch and go, but she made it back to the office to put together a great little article. Read all about the amazing Art Project she visited, that’s on page 26. We had a fabulous response to our Cash Draw Competition last month so we have decided to run it again! It is very easy to enter, and remember, you’ve got to be in it, to win it! See page 29 for the details… Last month’s winner can be found on page 61 along with the Puzzle solutions. Of course, November is also the time when we commemorate the fallen on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday which this year is on 14th November. At the moment the Royal British Legion are working towards “business as usual” for the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London and to have collections for the Poppy Appeal return to our local communities. Do support them if you are able. There will of course, also be local services of remembrance. Please take special care of your pets this month, bringing them inside during the evenings. Fireworks can start early, and go off frequently, during this month. Whatever November has in store for you, please stay safe and stay well. Until next time,
Ros

This month we caught up with Preston, a forward thinking teenager who invests in property! Preston born and bred, Hamza was in a school run car accident at just 11. After a drawn out investigation, further complicated by Covid, his fiscal compensation was finally awarded when he was 18. Immediately advised to invest in a pension. Hamza sought counsel from his parents who encouraged him to look at property up north – they were familiar with the neighbourhoods and could even be his tenants. Hamza wasn’t so sure, and after a swift consultation with Mr Google up popped Buy to Let Hunter. Hamza met Adrian and Alex and found them relatable, trustworthy and they spoke the same language. Hamza tentatively asked for some advice and with some sensible guidance, he investigated all of his options with his new chums. “I was sold.” He sighed with relief. There were a few struggles finding a mortgage broker, a scuffle with solicitors but eventually a loan was secured, an offer made and accepted, walls painted, furniture purchased and his two-bedroom semi was ready for the first guest. Buying his little house in Hitchin was a great move for Hamza: “I realised that I don’t want to buy up north: the returns are too low.” His father argued that the money Hamza spent in Hitchin would buy him a mansion closer to home – but Hamza Advertising feature
stayed strong! Hamza feels confident in his decision to eschew a pension and take his place on the property ladder instead. “I can always sell it in a few years if my situation changes – or if I get married…” he added, eminently sensibly, understanding the flexibility of his choice. Hamza felt very supported throughout; a student studying PPE, Hamza plans to use the income from his property to help pay his tuition and living expenses. It will enable him to go on and pursue a master’s degree in environmental consultancy. “Working with the BTLH team was a very positive experience. I cannot imagine doing this on my own – but look! Now I am on the property ladder and a lot of the credit goes to Adrian and Alex!” Unlike most of us twice his age, Hamza has a clear view of his future, and has eschewed the usual options for a young lad with money in his pocket. We are so proud to have assisted him and can attest that Hamza is the very embodiment of aspiration; is this the beginning of his empire? Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? My Time in Prison Once in awhile someone gives you an amazing gift without even knowing it. But spending time in prison probably wouldn’t be on most people’s Christmas list!! However, I was recently invited to join two friends to visit an art exhibition at HM Prison Send. It was with a little trepidation that I decided to go..I have never been to prison! No, really I haven’t!! ‘Our Time’ is an initiative that grew out of the art residency programme delivered by Watts Gallery Trust within Send since 2008 and funded by the Michael Varah Memorial Fund. In 2017 two artists in the prison came up with the idea of holding the ‘Our Time’ exhibition, with an aim to display their work and give invited guests the opportunity to buy it (along with related merchandise) as part of their social enterprise. And this was the 4th one they have held since then! None of us know what events in life may take us on a different path to the one we set out on and more importantly if we are knocked off course how we will deal with it. Whatever brought these women to where they are now, they have used their time to find the positives and discover previously undiscovered talents. We think people are sent to prison as punishment for their actions. These women have proved that it is as an opportunity for rehabilitation. I am in awe of their
achievements, but more, I am in awe of their strength of character, their positive outlook on their lives, their determination to make the most of this time and to produce amazing work. I would love to have the space to tell you so much more about my visit to this exhibition. I feel privileged for the chance to have attended and am so grateful to my lovely friends for asking me to join them. Please do help support this initiative and find out more by visiting: www.michaelvarahfund.org Sally Varah says: “At the Michael Varah Memorial Fund, we work in partnership to give people opportunities that rebuild and transform their lives. We support those who are marginalised and at risk in our society - and that includes offenders and ex-offenders, and young people at risk of homelessness - to help develop their skills and talents and improve their life chances. We work with partner organisations, often to deliver one-off Transition Grants for individuals faced with dramatic adjustments to their lives, where relatively small levels of funding can make a life-changing difference. Over £340,000 has been raised since the MVMF was founded in 2007, in order to positively impact the lives of some 2,000 vulnerable people and show them an alternative future. We give brave new funding for brave new worlds.”

LEATHERHEAD LIONS
Project Wenceslas DO YOU RECEIVE FUEL ALLOWANCE AND DON’T NEED IT? WE KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES. Project Wenceslas - as the line in the popular carol says - is about ‘gathering winter f-u-e-l’. Leatherhead Lions have been running the project since December, 2013. During this time, we have asked better-off pensioners who don’t need their winter fuel allowance to donate it. Their donations are placed in a ring-fenced account and every penny is then used to support those less fortunate and in fuel poverty or simply can’t put food on the table. Since its inception, we have helped over 200 households to keep the lights on and stay warm. We work very closely with the Citizens Advice Bureau in Leatherhead and Dorking and Christians Against Poverty in Bookham to identify the clients needing help. Often, it is serious illness that tips a family into difficulty. For example, we helped one family when the main breadwinner fell seriously ill and had to give up work and his partner also had to curtail work to care for him. From having two incomes, the family became dependent on benefits and fell into arrears. Our Wenceslas fund offered a life-line to pay off energy debts and keep them warm. Sometimes, it’s a breakdown in relationship that causes the problem. One lady needing help had to move into a safe house with her children to escape an abusive partner. Faced with the costs of setting up a new home alone and from scratch, she struggled to find money for the pre-payment meters that such accommodation
30 Looklocal Magazine - November 2021
invariably comes with. A significant top-up on her prepayment meter cards helped to get her started. We are appealing for funds again this year, so if you don’t need your winter fuel allowance, why not donate it? (If you are a tax payer, gift-aid your donation to increase its value by 25%). Every penny donated will go to help families suffering with fuel poverty. And like all donations made to Lions, nothing is ever deducted for administration or expenses.
TO DONATE: Send a cheque to Wenceslas Appeal, Leatherhead Lions Club, 86 Newton Wood Road, Ashtead, KT21 1NW. Or visit our website www.leatherheadlions.org.uk and donate direct or download Gift Aid Form.

Movers and shakers….. We are in an industry of rapid change and are aware that today’s “new boy” is tomorrow’s “yesterday man”. We thought it would be beneficial to highlight some of the new products that are hitting the streets and what their impact might be for you. Windows 11- Released on the 5th October, Microsoft have detailed a minimum system spec it requires. Whilst there are no major surprises from a performance requirement, there is one item Microsoft are making a mandatory component, which is something called TPM v2. TPM (Stands for Trusted Platform Module-if you have it) is built into your motherboard/processor of the machine. It provides hardware to carry our crypto-graphical operations to make your machine tamper resistant and protect your machine against malicious software. In many cases the TPM functionality is disabled. To enable TPM can be quite a tricky as you have to go into the core machine settings, an area called the Bios- which is the basic firmware for your motherboard. Windows 11 offers improved connectivity to external monitors and devices, a newer cleaner look and appearance and the big plus is its ability to run many Android written Apps that you may have on your smart phone. Windows 10 will continue in support until 14 October 2025, so you do not need to jump to Windows 11 right now, but it will be worth considering this in 2022. We are seeing a significant increase in the sale of large monitors. This may be fuelled by the home working need and the reduction in price of the larger displays; currently a 32” display is being sold at what was the price of 27” monitor, which is being sold at what was the price of a 24” monitor. So many monitors have shuffled down in price point. For example, we have this very attractive Hannspree 32” monitor for just £285.00, a great performing monitor and very slick looking too. Stocks of Notebooks and desktops have, and continue to be, a challenge. Although we are well stocked, we have noticed a fall in the sales price of many units, so it is a very good time to buy and all PC’s we sell will be fully Windows 11 compliant. Many software problems we are encountering have been caused where the Windows updates are blocking some of the older applications from running or performing properly. If you are using Office 2013 or earlier, you really should be considering an upgrade to your Office package as this may be causing you problems as it is no longer in support. Office 2016 for a PC will cease support on 14 October 2025. This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

HOME WANTED! Lucy and Theo
Lucy and Theo are 4 month old kittens who came into care at around 11 weeks old and are looking for a forever home together. Their mum was a feral cat and they were born in a stable. Since coming into care they have been on an intense socialisation programme and have made fantastic progress. They love their food, playing and now really enjoy being stroked. However, they have missed out on some socialisation and so need a home prepared to help them continue on their journey. They have been neutered and chipped and are in great health. They would like an adult only home or home with older children. They need someone who is home a reasonable amount of time to continue to invest in their socialisation journey. Ideally, they would not be regularly left for more than 4-6 hours at a time while they grow in confidence. They’d like a nice safe garden and most importantly lots of love, patience and time to play! If you think you may be able to offer Lucy and Theo their forever home, please get in touch on 0345 260 1387 or adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/EpsomCats-Protection
As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland) In line with Cats Protection guidelines, we are only homing cats in the local areas of: KT5,6,9, KT17-23, SM7 and RH3-5

A very successful return to Bookham’s Old Barn Hall in September has given the BWC confidence to confirm a programme of monthly wine tastings, safe in the knowledge that members have given their full support to all the extra arrangements that are in place to keep everyone safe and suitably distanced, without losing the Club’s essential atmosphere and friendliness. For this evening, Angela Bawtree highlighted the impact climate change is having on two popular grape varietals - Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc - and the wines chosen for the evening certainly demonstrated the changes taking place. Following in October, Sea Change Wine joined us to introduce their range of highly acclaimed, ethically sourced, eco-friendly wines. Sea Change
is passionate about two things: protecting our oceans from plastic pollution and great tasting wine. Every bottle of Sea Change wine helps fund ocean conservation projects across the globe and their excellent initiative has already raised over 100,000 Euros to fund them. Details of these two presentations, and those that follow in November and December can be viewed on our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk Join us a guest at one of our meetings If you would like to know more, or attend a meeting as a guest, visit: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or email: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
HERITAGE WEEK 2021 The return of Mole Valley’s Heritage Week in September 2021 showed the Leatherhead & District Local History Society back in action after the long pandemic absence. As well as the return of normal opening hours and a new display at the Society’s Leatherhead Museum, special initiatives included a talk by veteran member Bill Whitman on his many years as a consultant with the former Leatherheadbased Food Research Association, and publication of a special walking guide to 20 historic points in Fetcham, written by L&DLHS President Alan Pooley. Bill Whitman’s talk at the Leatherhead Institute and on Zoom, about the research association matched the Heritage Week theme of Edible England. He explained how Leatherhead District Council had attracted the Food Research Association to the new Randalls Park site in 1950. He spent some 40 years in the wider food industry and worked there 1971-93. Knowledgeable scientists would be called in to advise food manufacturers. Data was securely stored. Leatherhead also hosted scientific symposia and training courses. Bill’s own projects included large-scale production of prawn crackers. He visited a Manchester-based supplier of these to Chinese restaurants and advised on improved quality production. Afterwards the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation asked him to go to China and demonstrate how to make dehydrated foods, in particular soups. This led to a series of lectures in Beijing to biologists, microbiologists, food technologists and engineers. Copies of Alan Pooley’s Walking Guide to the

Heart of Historic Fetcham were provided at Fetcham Park House and at the neighbouring 11th century St Mary’s Church. He was assisted by local historian Vivien White in producing the guide, whose Grade II locations included the Salt Box, Ballands Hall, Orchard Cottage, Yew Tree and Tea Tree Cottages, and Home Farm House as well as Fetcham Park House and St Mary’s themselves.
Fetcham Park House itself celebrated the Edible England theme with fun installations in its grounds by students of Grace & Cable, the organiser of craft classes for woollen knitting enthusiasts. No fewer than 830 people dropped in to see tea-tables bedecked with knitted food and a giant 140-piece knitted Union Jack beside the water-fountains. By boat & bridge to an Eton lunch
Their first outing since Covid was organised by Bookham member Terry Hulme. Thirty met at Runnymede for a boat trip to Windsor, and a walk over the bridge for lunch at an Eton brasserie followed by some free time. There are plans to visit to National Trust Hatchlands with an Italian lunch at Newlands Corner, and the resumption of the club monthly country rambles. In October the club had its second post Covid monthly club lunch meeting with a speaker. And on 11th November there will be a Zoom talk with speaker: David Williams’ “Word War 1 - Significant Sideshows” and at the club monthly lunch on the 18th Ian Whittle’s “Genesis of the Jet”.
The next £500 club charity donation, will be to Horsley, Bookham & Leatherhead Riding for the Disabled. Margaret Lawson our Litter Pick Co-ordinator reports: The Bookhams’ Litter Pick & THANK YOU The Bookham’s Litter picking group have been active over the past weeks. Apart from our regular group picks, some of us helped at the Bookham street party and also at Village Day. We also had a very successful pick on the 3rd October, in glorious sunshine. There has been less litter about in the past few months, in part due to all our wonderful Womblers, (folk who adopt a road, or part of road near their home, to keep litter free). A huge thank you to you all. What you do is really appreciated. If anyone would like to join the group, or become a Wombler, do contact Margaret at litterpicking@bookhamresidents.org.uk We meet on the first Sunday of each month at 11am at Lower Shott Car Park. MVDC have published their Draft Local Plan following the consultation which residents will remember took place in January 2020. The Council have undertaken a significant review of the plan and taken in to account the comments and contributions by Bookham residents, BRA and other local organisations. In total these amounted to 31% of all responses. Bookham represents 13% of MVDC population. The outcome is that the number of dwellings in Bookham has been reduced from over 800 to 469 over the plan period which is until 2037 which is some good news. (For MVDC overall plan is to build 5950 new dwellings over this period) This Bookham number is made up of 212 dwellings on new sites, the bulk being on Green Belt land behind Little Bookham Street and the remaining from small developments throughout Bookham over the next 16 years. However concerns over infrastructure still exist and the BRA is taking legal advice on what legal challenges, if any, may be employed. The next stage in the ratification of the plan is for comments and representations to submitted to MVDC. These need to submitted by Sunday, 7th November. MVDC will collate all the representations and in February 2022 intend to submit their Local Plan and representations to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government who will appoint a Planning Inspector. The Inspector will consider the Plan and the representations in an Examination-in-Public and there are likely to be public hearings on the Plan next year. The Inspector will issue a report on the Plan which will set out whether the Plan is legally compliant and sound or how it can be made so. If MVDC agree with the Inspector's findings, MVDC will adopt the Plan. You can read more on the Mole Valley District Council website and guidance if you wish to make a representation: www.molevalley.gov.uk and search for Future Mole Valley.

Book Reviews NOVEMBER 2021 ‘A Slow Fire Burning’ by Paula Hawkins (Hardback £20.00) Having read her previous books I was interested to see what this one had to offer. I found it to be the best one to date. The cast of characters connected in a complex relationship kept me engaged and intrigued. The three women are in turns pitiable and unlikeable; all could have been responsible for the death of the young man. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will happily read her next book. ‘The Wolf Age: The Vikings, the Anglo-Saxons and the Battle for the North Sea Empire’ by Tore Skeie (Hardback £25.00) Norwegian historian Tore Skeie has the gripping narrative skills of a thriller writer. The raw material is exciting already, with relentless years of Viking raids and desperate Anglo-Saxon kings countering with battle and bribery. Skeie also connects these events with the tumultuous changes throughout early medieval Europe, from the Norwegian fjords to Muslim Andalusia. His fresh perspectives and skilful use of the source material such as poetry, sagas, the furious preaching of Wulfstan, artworks and maps add to the sense of what it must have been like to live in this terrifying, innovative and exhilarating age. ‘Dinner Party: A Tragedy’ by Sarah Gilmartin (Hardback £16.99) Kate Gleeson hosts an annual memorial dinner on Halloween in honour of her twin sister Elaine. Kate’s life has been shaped and marred by the tragic accidental deaths of her father and separately her sister. The rest of the family are emotionally bound together in a twisted almost tortuous embrace. Their mother is a manipulative, emotionally and physically abusive woman. Kate and her brothers each try to escape her control in their adult lives. Over time, and with the benefit of counselling, they come to a place where they can begin to forgive and heal their fractured family. A worthwhile read!

Range Rover
CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
Talk about cars and mention RR and I would bet any money that Rolls Royce springs instantly to mind. Not any more! Well, not to my way of thinking. The world recognised initials RR have taken on a competitive new identity in the superior shape and performance of the upcoming Range Rover, the splendid result of 50 years of research and painstaking development by the finest of the UK’s motor minds. I dwell in 4-by-4-land, with probably more of the auto biggies in the home counties, and around London, than anywhere else in our blessed land - and the numbers are certain to be accelerated with the wonderful RR newcomer, the flagship of the company, early next year. I am told orders have already been placed before its official appearance. Much of its detail, and the pinpointing of its rumoured improvement in all sectors, remains stowed away in the imaginative minds of its developers and engineers, even if its basic design remains pretty much the same as its predecessors. I can say that the new model will feature a slightly gentler design in terms of the box shape of car. In addition the lights and wheel arches will be binned to give it a more up to
54 Looklocal Magazine - November 2021
date appearance. The company describes the changes as “a mild redesign“. We shall see... Nevertheless, I trust the flagship beauty will be a pinnacle of luxury, inside and out, as it expands its status in a really hard-fought market of estates and four-by-fours. It is destined to be the fastest of them all. Not only that, the sofa-like and sublime comfort on its innards, with five lounge-type and unbelievable comfy rear seats and legroom a plenty, will assure passengers. Plus, they will have plenty of headroom, so the pricey hairdos and curls of the grateful lady guests do not get flattened and wrecked. Nor will the bowler hats of their hubbies. The latest result of the company’s careful planning and plotting is rumoured to be powered by a V8 two-litre turbo and a 141 BHP electric motor. The result? The performance? Still secrets....but you can bet it will be value for your hard-earned. I can’t wait for the final revelations! And I would guarantee I am not alone. As for “the other” RR? One of my very, very favourite modes of the poshest and superb expert examples of the best of British workmanship, I shall give it another thought if I win the National Lottery!

Ocean Cycling continue their support of Princess Alice Hospice
Off they go...
Since 2015, Ocean Cycling has been raising valuable funds for Princess Alice Hospice by cycling 300km from the Hospice in Esher to Paris; now in its sixth year, the group was determined to continue the event despite COVID restrictions, which necessitated them rerouting from Esher to Land’s End instead. Ahead of their quest to raise funds, the cyclists gathered at the Hospice to fill up on bacon butties, croissants, tea and coffee before being waved off on their adventure: four gruelling days of cycling across the English countryside, covering a total of 580km to reach their destination in Redruth for a well-earned rest. The annual event, which is organised by Kevin Taylor and Matt Pegg, started out with just four riders and has expanded to 20 this year. Since beginning the event, they’ve managed to raise almost £80,000 for the Hospice and donations for this year’s challenge are still coming in two
They arrived in Cornwall.
weeks after the event. Their target this year was £10,000 and at the time of writing the total raised was more than £12,500. Organiser Kevin said: “It feels amazing to finally put on a ride for the Hospice, after having to cancel last year’s event. This one is a bit different to our usual trip but one we won’t forget!” Community Partnerships and Events Lead at the Hospice, Claire Woodward, said: “What a great group they are and what a fantastic job they’re doing of raising funds for us. Four days in the saddle with only short breaks sounds like hell to me, but they battle on, through blisters and muscle aches to do an amazing job - thank you guys.” Anyone interested in taking up a cycling challenge for the Hospice can register here https://www.pah.org.uk/events/category/ cycling/

Home, Shed & Vehicle Security NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
This time of year tends to see an increase in reports of burglaries of domestic dwellings and thefts from garages, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. In my work, I am asked to visit people who have been victims of a burglary. It is sad to report that in many cases homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in - they have gained easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all, cases we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level and this is often because access to the rear is not restricted by locked gates or fencing. Any gates should ideally have bolts fitted at waist height to prevent someone reaching over and opening the gate easily. Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to burglars. Burglars prefer to “work” unobserved, so having a clear line of sight from the roadside to a property makes it less attractive than a home where there are high fences or hedges, where a would-be burglar will not be readily seen. Having some effective, low-level, exterior lighting can also provide a deterrent effect, as it removes
58 Looklocal Magazine - November 2021
areas of shadow which are so popular with burglars. Dusk-till-dawn exterior lighting can be very attractive and cost-effective, as it generally uses low wattage bulbs and it also removes the need for people to switch exterior lights on and off. If your home is going to be unoccupied at any time after dusk, the use of some simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern can convey the impression that there is someone at home. This has been shown to be an effective deterrent, as burglars never want to meet their victims and only rarely target a property where it appears that anyone is there. Also, I would emphasise (as I have done in the past) that any residents of Mole Valley can request a free home and property security survey. All you have to do to contact me on 07467 337783. You can also email molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk and I will get your message to call you back to arrange an appointment. I will always focus on practical advice that is sensible and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not promote any specific products or companies and can often suggest relatively simple ways that people can use to make their homes less attractive to a would-be burglar.
