Welcome to September!

Well! That was a slightly underwhelming summer, weather wise, wasn’t it? I hope many of you managed to have some time off to relax and catch up with friends and family over the past weeks despite the mixed bag of weather! On that note, if you are interested in finding out more about our ever changing climate, why not pop along to the Mole Valley Climate Hub? This is a new initiative running in Leatherhead, find out more on page 55! We are delighted to bring you an action packed magazine this month; as well as a wide selection of businesses and services, there’s a whole bunch of events and open days to find out about on our What’s On pages. It’s so wonderful to finally be able to include these again. We hope there will be something that takes your fancy! Having been uncertain for months about if they could go ahead, the Bookham Open Gardens team organised a wonderful & very successful event in late June. There are a few stunning gardens from the day featured on page 14 and more are available to see on the Bookham Open Gardens facebook page! What a lovely local event! It is wonderful to hear that the much appreciated 'Bookham Help Your Neighbour' scheme has recently been able to restart. If you are interested in using their services please see the update on their T’s & C’s on page 44. And if you’re able to offer any help, they would love to hear from you too. Finally, I urge you to read a little letter from Lance, on page 57. This riding group have a very big place in my heart, as my own brother also enjoyed many happy evenings riding, just like Lance, with the help of this lovely charity. Please donate if you possibly can. It really will make a huge difference to so many. Until next month, Best Regards,

Ros

BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS 2021 - a great success!

Were we going to be able to run it at all with the restrictions? The answer was a resounding YES and over 600 people bought tickets and an amazing total of £7000 was raised on Sunday 27th June. It all goes for the upkeep of the Old Barn Hall and is very welcome! Although we couldn’t run the minibuses this year, and at the Hall our team had to provide refreshments outside, the rain held off till near the end and the day was a great success. We had 7 excellent new private gardens to offer visitors, along with eight old favourites together with The Grange and Little Bookham Allotments. We had excellent feedback from our visitors who enjoyed being part of one of the first community events since lockdown ended. We’ll be putting some pictures from our gardens

Looklocal Magazine - September 2021 14

on our Facebook page (@bookhamopengardens). Do let us know via Facebook or Messenger if you might be interested in opening your garden in 2022 - we are always on the lookout for new gardens. You can also email bnb.selworthy@ btinternet.com. The date for next year is Sunday 26th June 2022, again a week after Village Day’s normal timing. Save the date! The Committee and BCA would like to thank all our volunteers and garden openers, our ticket sellers (Wishing Well, Bungalow Stores), everyone who visited, our main sponsor The Vineries Garden Centre and our other supporters, Patrick Gardner & Co estate agents, WH Cox & Sons Removals, DB Designs Southern Ltd and Connevans. Bookham Wine Club

As our successful garden meetings end, a new ‘era’ in The Old Barn Hall begins … Our final ‘holiday’ destination for this year was Portugal, when in August, members were treated to four of the country’s traditional wines. First, a glass of fizz. Portugal may not be the first place you think of for a glass of ‘bubbles’ but Aldi’s sparkling Vinho Verde did not disappoint - crisp, fresh and creamy with a delicate mousse. Three wines from The Wine Society followed: A refreshing glass of chilled Rose - a ‘stand-out’ category winner in The Wine Society’s recent blind tasting; impressive, for its dry, grapefruit-filled flavour, herbal and peppery notes. Then, a ‘multi-variety’ dry white from the Lisboa Valley; with touches of tropical and ripe stone fruit, complemented by hallmark freshness and balance.

Finally, a powerful Portuguese red made from a blend of native grape varieties, brought our last summer garden meetings to an end. In September, preparations are complete for a safe, and comfortable return to our traditional meeting format in The Old Barn Hall. The programme starts with long term Wine Club friend and qualified educator, Angela Bawtree. ‘Exploring Climate’ is Angela’s chosen theme, when she will tell us how the world’s changing climate is influencing the wines we drink, accompanied by six wines that demonstrate the fast moving trend. If you would like to know more, or join us as a guest at one of our meetings, you’ll be very welcome. Just visit www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or email: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk.

A very special club for wine lovers … right here in Bookham If you enjoy drinking wine, discovering new varieties from around the world, and hearing how they are made, then the chances are you’ll definitely enjoy our Club, its monthly tastings, seasonal events, and all it has to offer. Our tastings and presentations are held in The Old Barn Hall on the second Monday of the month, lead by wine producers, merchants and qualified independent educators. Importantly, all our presenters share a common bond, namely their love of all things wine, an impressive knowledge of wine and wine making – and an ability to inform, entertain and amuse! Most definitely, there is a social side to our Club too; it’s friendly, inclusive and informal. New friendships are made and old established ones maintained. Our programme recommences in September when the presentation themes will be: September 13 2021: Exploring Climate with Angela Bawtree

November 08 2021: A Mediterranean Cruise with Lits Philippou

October 11 2021 Sea Change Wines: Helping Protect our Oceans

December 13 2021: Christmas Wines and Themed Supper with Heather Dougherty

Each presentation will feature six wines selected to reflect the month’s theme, usually three white and three red. If you would like to know more, or book a place as a guest at one of these presentations, please contact our Membership Secretary membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk Or for more information visit our new website www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk

Princess Alice Hospice

supporter takes on 7 day challenge

Princess Alice Hospice supporter, Mikolaj Zieleznik, has just completed his three-part challenge, starting and ending in Chamonix, France, in a bid to raise £20,000 for the Esher based Hospice. The challenge started with a run: 90km distance, 6km elevation in the Chamonix Ultra Marathon – through snow and sunshine. Mikolaj completed this run in 19 hours 36 minutes beating his 20 hours target! He had a well-deserved day off before setting off on a drive to Italy to climb the 4,000m Grand Paradiso peak. This is Italy’s highest independent peak and a very difficult event after running 90km! After finishing on day 5 he then drove back to Chamonix for a rest day, in readiness for Challenge 3 on day 6/7 climbing Western Europe's highest peak: 4,800m Mont Blanc. The mountain stands between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Savoie and Haute-Savoie, France. However, the weather had other plans for Mikolaj and he was unable to complete this section of his challenge due to the severity of it. Not to be deterred he drove back to Italy, where he was met by some equally awful weather, but still was able to climb Piramide Vincent (4,215m) on Friday morning, having sat out the storm at Refuge di

mantova (3,500m) before flying back to the UK on Friday afternoon in time for his daughter’s birthday. Mikolaj’s decision to attempt this three-part challenge came when he learned how badly the local charity had been affected by the COVID pandemic with almost all events being cancelled during 2020. It costs £10.1m to run the Hospice for a year with 76% of the income coming from local supporters like Mikolaj. Training for the events started in January before Mikolaj was sure how or when the lockdown was going to ease, but he knew he would be doing something big to support his local Hospice. He said, “Local charities have suffered enormously over the past year and I felt the need to do something big to try and help. What the Hospice does in supporting those at the end of life and the help they give families and friends is priceless.” If you’d like to take on a less daunting challenge you can visit the hospice website at https://www. pah.org.uk/how-you-can-help/events/find-anevent/ You can also check out the latest images of Mikolaj on his travels on his Just Giving page here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/MikolajZieleznik1

KSS

AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY KENT SURREY SUSSEX

Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is always ready to provide world-class, fast-response, emergency medical care every hour of every day. Their missions have saved thousands of lives which is only possible thanks to their amazing supporters. It costs more than £15 million a year to sustain their world leading, cutting edge, innovative service, 88% of which is donated or raised by the people of Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Last year alone, they were called out to help over 2,500 people in life-threatening conditions. People like Madi, from Claygate, Surrey, who was just two-and-a-half years old when she was kicked by a passing horse. Madi’s mum Jen, has shared her story to help raise awareness of KSS. “I was shocked when I first saw Madi’s facial injuries and the blood, but I knew that I had to remain calm for our baby girl. I cradled her in my arms, while we waited for help to arrive. I don’t remember at what point the air ambulance landed, but I remember feeling a huge sense of relief that Madi was in the best hands. The KSS crew spent about 20 minutes on scene assessing Madi’s injuries and deciding what immediate care

34 Looklocal Magazine - September 2021

she needed. Then they moved Madi and her daddy to the helicopter and flew them to St George’s, arriving 12 minutes later. KSS provide life-saving, specialist critical care at the roadside and have saved thousands of lives like Madi’s. They were there for me and my family at a time when we so urgently needed help, and for that we’ll be forever thankful. Sadly, Madi suffered several facial fractures and damage to her right eye. She’s had four surgeries over the past year. We’ve been advised Madi still has a long road ahead and is likely to have many surgeries until her face is fully grown. It’s now a year on since that horrific day, and I’m so pleased to say Madi is recovering really well. Her eye remains our main concern and Madi has had to get glasses recently. I want to do all I can to raise awareness and much needed funds for KSS so when the worst happens to other families, they will be there to provide their very best care”. You can read Madi’s full story and find out more about the charity and their life-saving work by visiting aakss.org.uk.

Bookham Help Your Neighbour Scheme The Bookham Help your Neighbour Scheme restarted its service on 1st August 2021 following its suspension due to the Covid 19 pandemic. We provide transport to local medical facilities for elderly and vulnerable residents of Bookham, when no other means of transport are available to them. As a result of the pandemic, we regret that we must introduce some constraints on the service we offer : • Please give 5 working days’ notice if possible & we will not be able to accept requests closer than 2 working days beforehand. • Clients must have had 2 Covid vaccinations, wear a mask & be able to get in & out of a vehicle unaided. • We can no longer accommodate walking frames or wheelchairs. • We regret that we are now unable to accompany a client into a medical facility so they will be set down at the door & collected afterwards. This means that they must be able to reach their clinic unaided & be able to contact their driver for collection using their own mobile phone or by requesting that staff make a call for them.

Could you help?

Help Your Neighbour is operated by volunteers who either man our mobile phone one morning a month or drive our clients to their appointments. They give as much or as little time as they choose and are not tied to any regular commitment. We urgently need more volunteers to make the scheme a success.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS YEAR?

Museum in Heritage Week

Leatherhead Museum is gradually moving towards normal operation this summer after nearly two years of closure because of the Covid-19 pandemic. A trial period is under way with openings of Hampton Cottage, Church Street, on Saturdays only and restricted numbers of visitors. But a formal unveiling of a blue plaque in memory of late L&DLHS president Linda Heath is scheduled in September on the west wall overlooking the garden and this is expected to mark a return to normality as the pandemic fades away. Volunteers have continued to maintain the Museum throughout its closure and important specialist contract work has also been undertaken. The mid-bay partition on the first floor has been reduced to open up the roof zone to enhance the spatial impact. Electrical improvements have been completed and certified, heaters repaired, the courtyard re-pointed, a new door added, and signage improved. Current displays include Local Buildings of Interest in watercolours by John Hassell and son (1780-1850). But the call is out for more volunteers to run the Museum as the number has fallen during the closure. For Heritage Weekend on Saturday, 18 September, the Museum will show a display of local historic maps. This will follow the L&DLHS contribution to 2021 Heritage Open Days on Friday, 17 September - a talk

46 Looklocal Magazine - September 2021

entitled Leatherhead Food - Chips with Everything. Local historian Bill Whitman was once a consultant at the Leatherhead Food Research Association in Randalls Road and will be speaking either on-line via Zoom or back at the L&DLHS’s traditional venue in the Abraham Dixon Hall at the Letherhead Institute. Either way it will start at 7.30pm with public confirmation of the format issued in good time ahead of the event. Despite the Museum’s closure, the Society has also remained active throughout the period with its programme of regular online lectures via Zoom organised in cooperation with Dorking Local History Group. What’s on offer changes frequently so it is best to visit the Surrey History MeetUp website to find the latest updates. 16 August: Searching for Inspector William Donaldson (1807-55) (Henry Pelham, Inspector Donaldson’s great great grandson, talks about the first serving policeman to be murdered on duty in Surrey.) Online talks in coming months include the following: 27 September: A history of Croydon High St until 1901 (Carole Roberts) 25 October: Canal History & Heritage (including Wey & Arun Canal) (Roger Butler) 22 November: Dissolution of the MonasteriesSuperstition, Scandal & Dodgy Dealings (Julia Hickey) 31 January: The South at Work, Surrey Glassmaking (Geoff Mead) 21 February: To Journey’s End – the Life of RC Sherriff (Pete Allen) 21 March: Quakers at War (in Surrey and elsewhere) (Frances Hurd)

BOOKHAM COUNTRY MARKET SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Bookham Country Market is a co-operative providing high quality goods from local suppliers. It is run by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis, providing a valuable service to Bookham and surrounding areas. Most of the suppliers, like Mary (pictured here), are individuals who supply homemade products to sell at the market. Mary makes delicious Preserves and offers a wide range of jams and marmalades. Local Honey, straight from the hives, is also available. Mary, like so many of our suppliers, do not see this as a business, but as a service to the community and they enjoy supplying their products. Our suppliers also provide ready meals, delightful cakes & cookies, high quality, home propagated plants, seasonal cut flowers, and edible garden produce, grown without pesticides or other

chemicals. If you are looking for free range eggs, grass fed meat direct from the farm, artisan bread, or award winning cheeses straight from the dairy, look no further. Perhaps you fancy something crafty, maybe a unique gift, come and see the huge range of items made by our expert crafters. Find us in The Old Barn Hall, Church Road, Bookham, KT23 3PQ on Friday mornings from 10am to 11.30am. We are also hoping that the coffee shop will have reopened by the end of August. By shopping at this local market you are helping global warming by reducing transport miles and supporting local individuals and businesses. This is a community activity and we would welcome your support, and make you very welcome.

Still they come… It has been widely reported that during the lockdown the scammers and fraudsters have become even more active, and they are constantly innovating new plausible ways of gaining your trust to gain access to your personal, bank or credit card details. For example we have heard of a wide variety of Vaccine related scams, where you might receive a text or email purporting to be from the UK Government, it asks you to click on a provided link then takes you to an authentic looking gov.uk website then asks for a variety of details, and your credit card details. Clicking on any link contained in an email can divert you to the scammers website where they request your personal information, which will become valuable to them over time. We do have PC and Mac software which will alert you (and block your access) if the website you are being diverted to is not legitimate. There has also been an increase in travel related scams- supposedly from someone you know who is stranded in a foreign land and needs money to get home. The following steps to avoid being scammed may be useful: While scammers’ delivery methods and messaging can quickly change, a few basic security measures can help protect you from the latest and most common scams: • Be sceptical when someone contacts you. Scammers can spoof calls and emails to make it look like they are coming from different sources, including government agencies, charities, banks and large companies. Don’t share personal information, usernames or passwords that others can use to steal your identity. • Research companies. Before you make a purchase or donation, take a few minutes to review the company. Do a web search for its name plus “scam” or “reviews” and research charities on https://www.charitynavigator. org/ and https://www.charitywatch.org/. • Be careful with your phone. If you suspect a spam call, don’t respond or press a button. The safest option is to hang up or ignore the call entirely. You can always look up the organization and initiate a call yourself if you’re worried there may actually be an issue. • Don’t refund or forward overpayments. Be careful whenever a company or person asks you to refund or forward part of a payment. Often, the original payment will be fraudulent and taken back later. • Look for suspicious payment requirements. Scammers often ask for payments via bank or wire transfer, cryptocurrency or gift cards. These payments can be harder to track and cancel than other forms of payment, which can leave you stuck without recourse. None of this is intended to scare you or make you nervous- just exercise caution, try not to rush when carrying out requested tasks. Where possible do not follow web links that are enclosed within an email, search and locate the destination websites yourself.

Local support and help when you need it We provide for the computing needs of thousands of local home and business users - just like you, we would love to discuss your needs and requirements. We specialise in talking English, but if you wish to talk “techie” we can do that too. Please feel free to get in contact.

Morgan PLUS 4 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

If ever there was a handsome, charming and delightful car the Morgan Plus 4 is it. And it gets my enthusiastic backing with all the eagerness I can muster. No kidding... The 111-year-old company, tucked away discreetly in the Malvern Hills, has linked the olde world of veteran cars on the outside, with a thoroughly excellent service of technology at its best and most serviceable beneath a profile as sportily attractive as can be. It is the epitome of British excellence! An attention seeker if ever there was one, destined to leave the green-eyed amongst us gawping and envying its owners. I am sorry if I appear to be going over the top, but I cannot disguise my admiration and enthusiasm when 1950s craftsmanship links so perfectly with 2020s engineering expertise. And the result is as fine as this. If I win the National Lottery I shall be speeding to the nearest sales office, as fast as I dare, to buy one. What would be awaiting me would be a BMW-engined, 2-litre, 4-cylinder turbo charger, capable of hitting 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds with a 255 bhp boost. Phew! And all in the open air, hood folded away, with

54 Looklocal Magazine - September 2021

the breeze straightening your curls and pinking your cheeks. The ride too, is a real treat, with double wishbone suspension smoothing out those nasty bumps. The manual six speed gearbox comes courtesy of BMW - but please, please, don’t make the mistake of imagining this little beauty has been diluted by its German makers. The car is steadfastly, traditionally, English and independent. A handmade frame of ash, swooping, sporty, and shapely, with double-wishbone suspension, all borne along on a lightweight aluminium chassis. Overall, thanks to the painstaking efforts by those deep thinking and clever geniuses at headquarters, the new Morgan plus 4 charmer, handles better than ever — and that’s saying something when its long history has been severely tested. And gawping down that louvered bonnet will lift your spirits every time you squeeze behind the wheel and wave back to all the admirers who shout their hellos. Not that you are allowed to do it in the UK, but the car swanks with a top speed of 149mph. Not cheap at £66,430...but wow, what a wee joy.

The Conservatory Club is a relaxed and friendly social club which aims to help people with memory difficulties or in the early stages of living with dementia to retain their communication and social skills. While a member is at the Club, carers have a period of respite from the demanding responsibilities of caring and this helps many to continue caring for their loved one at home for longer than might otherwise have been possible. Members pay £23 per day, and this includes the cost of lunch and incidentals. We understand that this may prove difficult for some people and our Club Treasurer is available to discuss and advise on alternative arrangements.

Recycling helps to save some of the materials that are thrown away. However, manufacturing products and transporting them to where they are sold uses a significant amount of energy, as does collecting them from residents and recycling them into new products. If we reduce the amount of waste we produce to start with, we can make a significant positive environmental impact. Plastic Free Bookham is delighted to announce the new Recycling Guide and search tool it has developed in conjunction with Les Huett of BRA. Details can be found at https://www. bookhamresidents.org.uk/terracycle-drop-offs-near-bookham where you’ll also find a link to a document detailing how you can adopt a reduce, reuse, recycle order of thinking! If you do end up needing to recycle items, the search tool will help you find out where you can recycle lots of items. • MVDC wheelie bin and household collections, at the Lower Shott recycling area and other so-called ‘bring sites’, and at the Community Recycling Centre in Randalls Road, Leatherhead. • Many of our local supermarkets, including the Bookham Co-op, have now started recycling soft plastics i.e. packaging and bags from many products (but not the rigid plastic bottles, pots and trays which go in your green wheelie) • Alternatively a company called Terracycle recycle the ‘non-recyclable’ (mainly plastics which don’t go in the green bin) and the search tool allows you to find what is being collected in Bookham and nearby areas to benefit charities. There’s even a form on the page to allow you to ask about other items or you can email pfcbookham@gmail.com. Diane Poole

My name is Lance, I am 9 years old, and I have Down's syndrome. I want to tell you about my most favourite thing ever, horse riding! Mummy took me to our local Riding for the Disabled centre when I was three years old, after my physiotherapist mentioned to her that it would be good for my core strength. Everyone thought it would take me a while to get used to the ponies but we made friends as soon as I met them. I was smitten! Thursday was my favourite day of the week because me and my best friend Ella got to take a field trip from school and go riding. I am very sad at the moment, I haven’t been allowed to ride since the beginning of last year, and Mummy can’t tell me when I can go back. The pandemic meant the RDA had to close, because the volunteers need to help riders like me, get on and off the ponies, and walk alongside us in case we wobble a bit. Mummy says the RDA lost their home, this made me even sadder, and that is why I have written this letter. Horsley, Bookham and Leatherhead RDA need your help. They have raised funds to start building a new, fully accessible riding centre at Badgers Farm in Effingham, but they need a bit more money to add the roof, so Ella, myself and all the other riders can start to ride again. I really miss seeing the ponies, and getting to ride, if you are able to support the charity by making a donation to their ‘Raise the Roof’ campaign please visit:

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/raise-the-roof-for-hblrda lots of love

Lance (and Ella too!)

Horsley Bookham and Leatherhead riding for the disabled is a 100% volunteer led and funded local charity. Our new centre will allow us to more than double our rider numbers, allowing more children with disabilities, the opportunity to build muscle tone, co-ordination, balance as well as social skills, delivering a feeling of independence, a sense of achievement and greater self- confidence. RDA believes it’s what you can do that counts, please help us Raise the Roof to get Lance, Ella and other local children who have disabilities back in the saddle after what has been an incredibly tough year.

Mike Bessent

Crime Reduction Advisor & Designing Out Crime Officer NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

This month, I was trying to think of what to write about in terms of crime prevention and then decided to share with you some news about a colleague who many residents of Mole Valley will remember very well. My colleague, Mike Bessent, sadly died on the 11th June from a brain tumour which was only diagnosed last December. Mike underwent extensive treatments to try to halt the progress of the cancer but, tragically, this was not successful and he died peacefully at home with his wife and family by his side. My reason for mentioning Mike is that, for many years, he was the Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley and was my predecessor in the role that I currently hold. I had known Mike for several years before moving into the field of crime prevention myself and, in many ways, he was my mentor, support, guide and valued friend. Mike was a long-serving police officer who recognised the vital importance of crime prevention as part of an officer’s role. He trained in his specialist field and developed his knowledge and experience through the years to offer his expert advice to so many people. Like me, he visited victims of burglary, advised residents about home and property security, carried out security reviews of locations and business premises and advised on planning applications in terms of trying to “design out” the opportunity for crime. Mike had a natural ability to come up with practical and imaginative solutions to problems and was an enthusiastic champion of neighbourhood policing

58 Looklocal Magazine - September 2021

and problem solving involving the actual community in the decision making process. In recent years, Mike had moved over to Elmbridge to carry out this role over there but we were in very regular contact with each other, often several times a week, and his advice was always so helpful. I just felt that there are some people in the community who would want to know this news. Mike will be very sorely missed by all his colleagues but also by the wider community he served loyally for so many years. Here are a just a few of the crime reduction tips that Mike taught me: 1. Use timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern to give the impression that your home is occupied and people are moving about. 2. Remove obvious climbing aids, such as wheelie bins, which could help a burglar to climb to the back of your house - the most popular point of entry for a burglar. 3. Never leave window and door keys in locks, as they are very attractive as a method of entry to a would-be burglar. 4. Consider using some dusk-till-dawn lighting outside your home to remove areas of shadow and to enhance the impression of occupancy. 5. If you have an intruder alarm, please use it and, if not, consider getting one as they are known to be a very strong deterrent against burglary. All common sense and very practical ideas that I have used when giving advice over the years. Thanks, Mike!!
