WHAT’S ON IN BOOKHAM? MASSALA RESTAURANT THE ART SHED Read about The Art Shed open day at The Medicine Garden
COMPUTER TIPS CROSSWORD WRITING FROM LIFE A selection of work from Chris Leonard’s creative writing classes
Once again, as I write this message, the rain is falling outside! What a great British summer! I’m not sure about the predictions for the weeks ahead, but let’s just hope that there are enough sunny days to warm our bones! We decided not to let the weather get us down here in the Look Local office. We are in summer mode, despite the weather, and have just enjoyed a ‘deadline ice cream treat’ with the heater on ! This month, we have included a bumper double page of ‘What’s on’. I hope you will find this useful and will be able to enjoy some of the events that we have included. I ventured out of Bookham recently to review a lovely ‘fine dining’ Indian restaurant in Cobham. I hope you enjoy hearing all about it and maybe even give it a go for yourselves, it really is very nice indeed! Have you been to The Medicine Garden? It’s on the road between Effingham and Cobham, with plenty of free parking and a selection of lovely refreshment areas. It makes for a really splendid afternoon out. I went along recently to an open evening at The Art Shed, one of the small businesses within the grounds, and I was very impressed by the selection of art on offer. Not just the obvious either: this collection of artists provides an eclectic selection, demonstrating a wide array of skills. My photos don’t really do it justice, but hopefully might just inspire a few of you to visit. I’m sure you will enjoy it and it’s right on our doorstep, too. That’s about it for this month. We will be back in September, following a short summer break , with coverage of Bookham Village Day and lots more too. Until then, stay safe and I wish you a wonderful summer! Kindest regards

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, dependent on the level of supervision necessary.
• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

RECENTLY, I ENJOYED REVISITING MY FRIENDS AT MASSALA INDIAN RESTAURANT IN COBHAM
I
t was great to catch up with owner Bishnu. He is always very welcoming and seemed genuinely happy to see us! We enjoyed a delicious dinner and sampled some very tasty Nepalese dishes which have been added to their menu recently. For those of you who have not yet visited Massala, may I just say that it’s no ordinary Indian restaurant: it really does offer a fine dining Indian experience and at an affordable price, too. With no artificial colours used in the preparation, the food is more natural-looking (and tasting) than you would expect from your run-of-the-mill curry restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is beautifully laid out and it has a bright, modern feel about the place. Our waiter Kamal was very friendly but unintrusive, and he did a great job of looking after us. We started our meal in a traditional way with some light, crispy poppadums which were served with a selection of homemade chutneys and relishes. Yes, homemade! Very well worth the effort, as they were delicious. We then enjoyed some unusual Nepalese dishes, including Chicken Pakora, marinated with a wonderful selection of Nepalese herbs & spices. This was accompanied by some Aloo Tikki, a sort of potato mixture served with a delicious homemade mint sauce, followed by my personal favourite dish of the evening, scallops served in the most deliciously thick coconut sauce. My mouth is
watering as I think about these! And so the selection of tastes kept coming. One thing I hadn’t thought about before was the possibility of an oriental influence on Indian food. But Nepalease Chilli Chicken certainly had it, with a distinct sweet and sour taste about it. Very delicious it was, too! A whole array of vegetarian dishes are available and many of these also come from Nepal. The vegetables we had were, without a doubt, the very best I have ever eaten in an Indian restaurant: not over cooked and indistinguishable, but slightly al dente and very fresh and seasonal. Everything we ate was cooked to a very high standard. Even the naan bread was light and crispy and the pilar rice light and fluffy. It was a very enjoyable meal. Of course, all your favorite Indian dishes are also available, so if you fancy a regular curry, that is not a problem either. The chef at Massala has 20 years’ experience under his belt and Bishnu a further 18 years working in the restaurant business. This certainly comes across, as the food is amazing and the front of house is also well-managed. We spotted Bishnu greeting regular customers like old friends: he was even invited to join them at the end of the evening and share a coffee, which he enjoyed doing. The staff at Massala really take a pride in their work and this is certainly reflected in the experience when you eat there. Open every day between 5pm and 11pm, this lovely restaurant is highly recommended by Look Local.

olour is often one of the first things people notice about a plant, either its flowers or, to a lesser extent, its leaves, and so it plays an important part when it comes to the naming of plants. Continuing on with Latin terms associated with flowers and shrubs, I’m going to try to explain a little about the colour adjectives over the next few months, as it’s helpful to know them when you are trying to plan your garden. So, here we go with red and pink…
The reds are the most arresting, but there’s not just the one shade of red. They vary from blood red to fiery red/orange to red/purple, and there are adjectives for all these different shades. Very often, as with so many botanical names, it is easy to work them out if you think of a similar English word: for example, straightforward red is ruber, which is simple to remember if you consider the English ‘ruby’, and evident in Centranthus ruber, the red valerian, and Escallonia rubra. Rubellus is ‘reddish’, seen in the cultivar name of Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’, and rubiginosus is rusty red, as in Rubus rubiginosus, the rusty red bramble. Some plants start one colour and turn red, and so are described as rubescens or erubescens, or ‘becoming red’, and this is seen frequently in the plant world: for example, Acer rubescens, Geranium rubescens, Heuchera rubescens and Philodendron erubescens, all of which turn red eventually. Blood red is sanguineus - in heraldry, ‘sanguine’ is the colour ‘blood red’ - which is helpful if you know heraldic stuff, less so if you don’t - and in the plant world, it features in Geranium sanguineum, or the
bloody cranesbill, and Ribes sanguineum, the flowering currant. Flammeus and igneus will both be describing plants which are flaming or fiery red , but others are not quite so obvious, such as rufus, or ‘reddish brown’, as in Heuchera ‘Rufus’, or vinaceus, wine red, found in the heather Erica x vinacea, although this could be easier to guess because of the ‘vin-‘ at the beginning. While the reds are often hot and exciting, the pinks are usually softer and more romantic, but there is also a variety of shades of these, from rosy pink, seen in so many plants with roseus in their names - Alcea rosea, the pink hollyhock and Allium roseum, or rosy garlic, and also the flowers of Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’ which turn from lime green to white but acquire a light rose tint as they fade, hence the cultivar name of ‘Roseum’ to flesh-coloured, usually denoted by the Latin carneus and seen in Gladiolus carneus, a pale pink gladdie, and Aesculus x carnea, the pink horse chestnut. Coral pink is referred to as coralloides, as in Helichrysum coralloides. That’s quite enough for now. Next time, blue and purple…..and yellow (buueeeerrrrkk) will be last of all…. happy holidays to you all.

W HAT T O L O O K F O R I N A H IG H P E R F O R M A N C E C OM P U T E R There are many reasons why you would need a high performance computer. It may be that you play games, photo edit, video edit, or you do 3D design or animation. If your machine’s performance is not up to the task, this will result in poor graphics quality or very jerky performance, or if it’s taking ages to reflect any changes you have made, now is the time to address the problem. We have a significant range of truly high performance PCs and laptops which will consign your previous issues to the “distant memory” department. Our PCs are all custom-built, so we can build the very best machine for your purposes,. The laptops are pre-assembled and enjoy a stunning specification. What to look for: Processor The raw performance is supplied by the processor (CPU), and the device you should be going for is the Intel Core i7 quad core device. Some laptops have Core i7 CPUs with dual core CPUs; they provide you with less power and are generally of lower performance Solid state hard drive (SSDs) Programs and data are stored on the hard drive in the PC, and the faster you can access this information, the faster the PC will respond. The hard drive type that has been used in PCs for the last 20 years has been a mechanical hard drive, and whilst they can hold huge amounts of
data, their access speed is quite slow. The solid state hard drives offer dynamic performance, up to 20 times faster than a mechanical drive, but the SSD’s capacity tends to be less, so our solution is to install both. The SSD is used to store your Windows system and programs, whilst the mechanical hard drive is used to store all your data Graphics card This is a device which resides inside your machine and manages the information displayed. There are two main manufacturers of graphics cards: NVidia and Radeon, with a variety of models in the range. Going for the most up to date graphics card could cost as much as £600.00 just for the card, but selecting the next model back in the range (which was the very best graphics card only 2 or 3 months ago) will reduce the cost of the graphics card to £290.00. Other factors Having at least 8Gb of RAM is important, as is having a good powerful power supply to provide a reliable and regulated power feed to the components. A quality case with good cooling and thermal qualities is also essential, and finally the motherboard must be of a suitable standard to cater for your needs. There are a number of factors you need to consider, so before you make that decision, come and talk to us to ensure you are covering all the aspects required.

GARDEN CENTRE EASTWICK WI VISIT THE VINERIES GARDEN CENTRE
In April, The Vineries were delighted to host a nursery walk for the Eastwick WI. Michelle, the general manager, took the group behind the scenes onto the nursery to see the inner workings. She had arranged for the group to see how the potting machine works and how it helps to semi-automate the process, although there is no substitute for the human touch! Growers Alan Bone and Caroline Smale demonstrated how the machine works and explained how the machine could be used with different sized pots and “dibbers” for different-sized plug plants.
Michelle explained about the different pot sizes and compost mixes and the varying stages of development of the plants until they are finally ready for sale. It was interesting to hear that they no longer heat the glasshouses - this keeps the costs down and also means that the plants are much hardier when you buy them and will transfer into their new “homes” much more successfully than if they come from a heated environment. We are fortunate to have a local nursery growing their own plants rather than buying them in.
Nursery tours for small groups are available by appointment at certain times of the year. Please contact Michelle on 01372 458934 for details.

A GRAIN OF SAND by Gerfyl White
A grain of sand, a seed of an idea, a grain of sand lost on a beach for anyone to find. The toddler grasps his bucket, packs in the sand, solid, firm, up-ends his bucket, creating a perfectly formed turret on his sandcastle satisfaction ripples across his face. The teenager stares out to sea, letting the grains of sand slip comfortingly through her hand, she hopes to bring space into her confused mind contentedness spreads across her face. The dog digs furiously, frantically flinging grains of sand in all directions as he seeks to unearth an explanation for the scent purpose spreading to his wagging tail. The family sits peacefully by the water’s edge. A shriek as the son carelessly shakes grains of sand from his towel to land on his sister’s freshly sun-creamed back vengeance spreads across her face. The inspired artist at his easel incorporates the grains of sand blown spontaneously onto his painting, adding texturecreative appreciation spreads across his face. The beach-volleyball game is in full force, laughter, rivalry until a grain of sand lands in an eye and all stop to offer support solidarity spreads across the group A grain of sand is so insignificant and yet… a world of grains brings transitory joy and comfort to many.

Back in the days when proper musicians played proper music…I recall a dinner party game in which everyone round the table would invent their own pop/rock outfit & try to outshine the rest of the guests with their choice of band members. It comes from a time when it was big news if, say, the lead guitarist of one group left one big name group for another. This would have applied to The Who, Cream, Yardbirds, Yes, the Faces & many more. So if I were to play this game of creating brand new bands, I’d probably pick Keith Moon, the late drummer with the Who, as my drummer. Wild at times, but I also found him to be the perfect gentleman on other occasions. Bass guitar would have to be played by the lovable man from the Small Faces & later the Faces. A solid, dependable guy called Slim Chance who also wrote enduring songs for Rod Stewart & co. as well as his own backing band that he left The Faces for. Keyboards would need to be played by my old mate & keyboard genius Rick Wakeman, who played with Cat Stevens, David Bowe & Yes before going solo. Rhythm guitar is tricky but I’d have to go for George Harrison, an underrated maverick who was as influential as they come & would qualify for lead guitar had I not picked Jimmy Page for his incredibly full & dynamic presence with Led Zeppelin, & as for vocals…... Chrissie Hynde, the Pretenders singer with her fantastic range of styles, from hard-hitting rock to delicate soul, as demonstrated on Thin Line Between Love & Hate. So what do you think? Now all I need is a name for my band….?

These days, when the chips are down, I make this recipe and pile it high with cream - and I feel so amazing when I’ve eaten half of it! I don’t credit myself with creating it, I have the Helmsley sisters for that, but as I research more and more, I’ve discovered it is a well-known secret from the underworld of great nutritious food that I am bringing to you all.
I NG REDIENT S : 2 frozen ripe bananas 4 tbsp raw honey 2 tsp vanilla extract a tiny pinch of sea salt
6 tbsp cacao powder 2 tsp lemon juice 4 tbsp/60ml chilled water 2 chilled avocados (same weight as banana)
TO DECORATE
A sprinkle of cacao powder or cacao nibs
M ET HOD 1. Blend all the ingredients together in a food processor until very smooth. 2. Taste and adjust the flavours as you think necessary. 3. Fill little cups or shot glasses with the mousse and sprinkle with cacao powder or cacao nibs to serve.

LEXUS R E V I E W
T E D M AC AU L EY T E ST D R I V E S T H E N EW L E X U S R C F
Senile decay is a wicked saboteur of the occupants of Memory Lane and it wreaked its havoc yet again on me when I strove to recall what Lexus saloon I tested a decade or so ago. I was stirred to jogging my mind for a flashback as a comparison when I set about reviewing a complete contrast to the whispering wotsit I sampled ages ago to Lexus’s RCF roaring firebrand new release. The roomily elegant saloon of yesteryear revelled in a hush of an engine so quiet that I was duped into worrying it had packed up as I waited at, say, traffic lights. The same level of dupe cannot be said of the latest Lexus, their wonderful new challenger in the wild and woolly world of high performance 2x2 sporting speedsters. But you’ll have to be fast off the mark to grab one: I’m told that only 200 initially will be on sale in the UK. What you will get for your hardearned is a whizz of a hand-built motoring treat - the most powerful V8 road car the company has ever
built, endurance-tested to the limit on the world’s most demanding race circuits by skilled drivers who know how to take a car way beyond the safety limits that we sensibly impose on ourselves. To sit in the snug, superbly appointed leather-clad cockpit in front of two rather tight socalled passenger seats is an oasis of simplicity and calm with a nonbewildering array of instruments. Those minimal back seats, hardly roomy enough for the offspring, are further rendered useless by the severely curved roofing that dips deeply over the rear end. The benefit is that the boot is of a very useable size, and that’s more than most of its main rivals, such as the F-type Jaguar, dare boast. And the whole Lexus set-up carries
enough insulation and electronic gizmos to keep the engine noise at bay and ensure the driver is aware of any looming perils. As an example, there is an alert to remind you sharply if you carelessly wander out of your lane, plus blindspot monitoring. The RCF is a welcome breakthrough for a car maker better known for its SUVs and big saloons, and to take on the established likes of Jaguar, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes is indeed a bold move. But esssentially, it ticks all the crucial boxes and, to my mind, is a surefire winner, albeit a heavyweight two-tonner compared with, say, the 150kg lighter BMW M4. When you give the engine some hearty revs and stir the rear-wheel drive into full action, the rewards, either on the tight and twisty side road wiggles or cruising M-way stretches, are a feeling of composure and safety. RCF? Racy. Comfy. And fast.. Specification: Lexus 2x2 V8.HP 467. Top speed 168mph.0-60 in 4.5 seconds. 26mpg. Price: £59,995.

IS A VILLAGE OR PARISH COUNCIL
N E C E S S A RY F O R B O O K H A M ? W H A T
I
R E S I D E N T S
n the June edition of Look Local, the case for a village council was promoted. It is only fair that the role of residents’ associations should also be considered. The 4th tier of public administration can take many forms, the most common being residents’ associations and parish councils (also known as village councils). In Mole Valley, we have an even spread of both, with parish councils in the rural areas and residents’ associations in the more urban areas. This is true of Surrey overall, where many RAs have been in existence for over fifty years and accepted as part of the fabric of the community. With a parish council, because of its ability to raise a local mandatory tax, the rules governing its conduct are complex and many, and as such, incur much higher administration costs. This is not the case for a residents’ association which is based on an optional subscription and is one of the essential differences between the two. Another example is during the winter of 2013, when the BRA raised £8,000 in six hours and implemented a relief path in five days when the Lower Road route to the Howard of Effingham School was badly flooded and needed immediate resolution to maintain access to the school.

Within Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and Surrey County Council (SCC), both types of bodies are treated equally. An example of this equal treatment is the SCC-funded Lengthsman Scheme where both RAs and parish councils can apply for money for local “off highway” work. The BRA applied for and was awarded £5,000 to maintain and clear thirty town paths. It is worth noting that over the past eight years, Bookham has raised more than £1,000,000 to reinvigorate and rebuild many of its community facilities. Local churches have also invested in new facilities. This is not a track record of an unambitious community! Suggesting that a parish council should be considered to make up current perceived shortfalls in local SCC or MVDC facilities with a new organisation that will be with us forever is not proven, particularly given the long history of residents’ associations. The BRA is fully aware of the need for accountability and is in the process of changing its legal status to that of a company limited by guarantee, which will allow it to continue with its existing services to the Bookham community in a manner recognised by government. In considering the case for a parish council, these points need to be taken in to account.

early four people a month on average are killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads in collisions involving drink or drug-impaired drivers or by those who are driving carelessly. Statistics show that drinking and driving affects people across all age groups in the county, both male and female, but 17 to 25 year-olds are at the greatest risk. In the coming months, we will be looking in particular at the issue of drivers who are driving inconsiderately, dangerously or who are seen using their hand-held mobile phones. You are ten times more likely to have an accident when being distracted by using a mobile phone, which could result in a £100 fine and three points on your licence, or in a court appearance. Even if they are not stopped at the time by officers, those who are seen doing this will be contacted by police to outline the consequences of their actions. With summer now upon us, we are also reminding drivers not to risk the safety of all road users by drinking and driving, as statistics show an increase during the summer months. It is important to remember that alcohol takes time to leave the system and you may still be “over the limit”,

with impaired driving capabilities, the day after that party! Another point to be aware of is that the wearing of seatbelts is compulsory and there are strict guidelines relating to children being passengers in cars. Child and baby seats must conform to current regulations and be adjusted for the correct height and size of the child. For more information, you may like to check out www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk Alternatively, you can contact your local Casualty Reduction Officers, PCs Peter Hawkins and John Fruen. Just call 101 and ask to be put through to either of them. Alternatively, email molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk Please be responsible when you are out driving and do not do anything that is likely to cause injury to yourself or to others. The consequences could be with you for a long time to come. If you witness dangerous driving or suspect that someone may be driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then please report it. Call 101 or 999 in an emergency. We do appreciate that the vast majority of road users in Surrey drive responsibly, but there are always those who put other road users at risk.
