Every year it’s the same, December creeps up on me and bang, another year is nearly over. Welcome to our festive issue of Look Local in Cobham. Having enjoyed a mild autumn, it’s been a bit of a shock to feel the biting cold on my early morning dog walks recently; hats and gloves have found their way out of the drawer and Jack Frost has started to appear again, although he comes and goes, it seems. He obviously has other commitments, but that suits me fine! We are happy to share a selection of little features this month which I hope you will find of interest. See information about the new river side path that is looking fabulous and being greatly appreciated by many. Also, some interesting news regarding the beautiful landmark avenue of cherry trees along the Stoke Road. And an update from the Chatterbus team...it’s always good to hear about this great local service which goes from strength to strength. Of course, this is the time of year for many festive events and projects, so we include a good selection for you to take your pick! Included also is a music quiz from the lovely David ‘Kid’ Jensen and a book competition kindly provided by Ted Macauley, our Look Local motoring expert. There is also news about a fabulous new art group and news from Cobham Players too. These are just a few things you can find within our pages this month. I do hope you enjoy thumbing our pages and that we have included something for everyone to enjoy. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas & a happy & healthy 2018. On a personal note, I am looking forward to welcoming my three sons from far and wide, Asia, Leeds and Reigate in fact! I can’t wait to have my gang back together for Christmas. We look forward to bringing you more issues of Look Local in the year ahead. Warmest regards,

HOME ALONE

Look Local reader Mark has a two-year-old German wire haired pointer who hates being left alone. This doesn’t happen often, as Mark takes him to work every day, but on the odd occasion when he has to leave him, the dog becomes anxious and cries. Mark asks what can we do to help him and is a second companion dog the answer? Ultimately, this is a complex issue, and an experienced dog behaviourist is needed. Just like people, all dogs are individuals, which means their psychological needs should be assessed on a dog-by-dog basis. Your first step is to understand the root cause behind your dog’s separation anxiety and address it. Spending time establishing a cosy familiar den in the form of a dog crate can also help. Then, when you leave the house, he can enjoy being in a smaller much-loved space, rather than alone in an empty house which can feel daunting. If he isn’t currently used to a crate, this exercise should be undertaken slowly and over time, as he must not feel caged. Medication is available to assist but should be a secondary option once the behavioural issues are dealt with. A companion dog is definitely not the answer. The first dog may make the second dog anxious and you could end up with two distressed dogs! This is a tough one to tackle on your own. Feel free to contact us and we can recommend some excellent trainers experienced in dog anxiety who could help. Cobham River FOOTPATH UPGRADE

Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust, working in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council

Regular users of the river footpath from The Tilt into Cobham will be pleased to see that it is looking its best, following a recent upgrade by the Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust, working in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council. The original footpath was first developed 1996. Prior to that, to walk safely into Cobham, pedestrians had to cross over the road upstream of the mill to Crown Alley. At that time, the then Conservation Management Committee felt that pedestrians were being deprived of the pleasant views of the river and the rural landscape. The possibility of a riverside footpath became a reality when the Pride of Place grant scheme (sponsored by Toshiba/Surrey County Council), awarded the group sufficient monies to execute the

proposal for a 1.6 metre wide riverside footpath. The path proved so successful that EBC extended the eastern end to join up with the Old Fire Station, and a few years ago, SCC provided a new section of pavement adjacent to Riverhill. Subsequently, the Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust took on the responsibility of the path and its maintenance costs, which is an ongoing expenditure.Earlier this year, Elmbridge Borough Council agreed to meet 50% of the cost from their community infrastructure levy funds to carry out a further upgrade of the path, which has recently been completed. Further information regarding the work of the Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust, and details of how to become a member, can be found on the Trust’s website www.cobhamheritage.org.uk.

Rememberance CEREMONY AND TREES

Armistice Day Ceremony held at the Memorial on The Stoke Road on Saturday 11th November

Armstice Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. The Tilt Memorial on the Stoke Road in Cobham provided the perfect setting for a touching Armistice Day Ceremony on Saturday 11th November. Members of the Cobham branch of the Royal British Legion and other local representatives placed wreaths on the memorial, following two minutes’ silence. This site is also home to a much-loved avenue of cherry trees; these line the Stoke Road and have historically blessed the area with a stunning show of pink blossom each spring. The 44 trees were planted as an avenue of remembrance in 1946; originally, each bore a plaque with a fallen soldiers’ name inscribed on it (only one remained, which I picture above). The time has now come to replace these trees; gradually

16 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2017

over the past few years, their display has diminished, and the trees are spent. The area is now being treated to some much-needed enriching ground work to make the best environment/soil conditions for some new trees to prosper. Planting will happen in the New Year and it is hoped that the trees will start to blossom in the spring. It will, of course, take a few years for them to establish and grow into the avenue I remember so fondly, but it is good to know that future generations will also enjoy this beautiful local commemoration. This decision was reached following a local survey, where 96% of the 230 respondents indicated that they wanted the council to renew the Avenue of Remembrance to protect it for the future. Following the residents’ feedback, the decision was made to restore this valued landmark. This will mean removing all of the existing trees, improving the soil and replacing them with new young cherries, with a meadow strip underneath. The Green Spaces Team will be keeping local community groups informed of the outcome of this project. For further information, visit elmbridge.gov.uk/ consultations I know this may sound strange, but I thank you, lovely old trees, you’ve provided a wonderful sight for so many years.

Sugar Money by Jane Harris (Hardback £14.99) Jane Harris pitches you headfirst into this outstanding heartbreaking story of siblings, slavery and the savagery of the colonial past. Lucien is 12 and hot-headed, while 28 year old Emile is cooler and wiser. They are brothers and slaves. Their master, Father Cleophas, has commanded them to take a “motley gang of slaves in a perilsome escape” from Grenada, now under brutal British control, and bring over 40 of them, some old and sick, to work in the monastery’s sugar plantation on Martinique. The reckless venture takes place over a few short weeks in December 1765 and is recounted by Lucien in a mixture of English, French and Creole. Jane Harris is unflinching in her descriptions of the horrors of slavery but this is a superb novel. Do read it! Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood (Paperback £9.99) Alias Grace dives into the true story of a poor young Irish immigrant and domestic servant who finds herself accused and convicted of murdering her wealthy employer and his housekeeper. Atwood tracks the story of Grace as she sits down to tell her story to fictional alienist Dr Simon Jordan, hired by those campaigning for her release. “There were so many different contradictory stories about Grace Marks; nobody actually ever knew whether she had killed anybody or not. There were four people in the house. Two of them were murdered, the third one was hanged and she was the one left. And she never told.” Grace is the archetypal unreliable narrator. Who does tell the absolute truth all the time? Shortlisted for the Booker 20 years ago and now a Netflix series, this is Margaret Atwood at her best. The Red Dancer by Richard Skinner (Paperback £8.99) The elusive figure of Mata Hari is the quarry hunted by this novel, the events of her unconventional life revealed in tantalising glimpses and historical vignettes. Young Margaretha Zelle enters into marriage after answering a lonely hearts advertisement and is swiftly transported from The Hague to Indonesia, where she finds herself unsuited to life with an army captain twice her age. Seeking a fresh start in Paris, she reinvents herself as an exotic dancer with the stage name Mata Hari. As she is courted by military and political admirers, she finds another role to play, that of the spy. As the novel progresses, the gauzy veils of Mata Hari’s persona lose their power to protect her from the harsh realities of the First World War. The Red Dancer is an enjoyably intriguing read.

New Chatterbus OFF TO A FLYING START

Further information: Anne Yeates 07803 609582

A smart new 16-seater Chatterbus has been plying the roads of Cobham since mid-October, taking over from the aging converted minibus, and is already winning new fans. After only three weeks, passenger numbers were the best ever. Mothers with pushchairs in particular are finding the new low-floor Mellor bus far easier to board, and many more are now using the service. The elderly and wheelchair users are also finding access much improved. Extra interior space leaves plenty of room for shopping trolleys, and the electronic destination boards make the Chatterbus weekday C1 and Saturday C2 services easier to identify. The reliability of the service will be even greater with the new state-of-the-art-vehicle. What has not changed, however, is the trademark friendliness of the service. As well as becoming a lifeline for those with no transport of their own to shop, visit friends and access vital services, Chatterbus has come to be a social focus for many: “Our drivers are the best in Surrey,” said Chatterbus Chairman, Sir Gerald Acher. “They make Chatterbus live up to its name with their good humour. They know many of the regular passengers by name and think nothing of going the extra mile.” Other services that have been maintained are the bus

tracker and text alert to any delays. Links to both of these, as well as to up-to-date timetables and Chatterbus news, can be found at www.chatterbus.org.uk. The bus will continue to wait at the station if trains are running up to seven minutes late, or even longer if the timetable allows. The purchase of the new bus was made possible by the grant of CIL money by Elmbridge Council, and the day-to-day running is underpinned by sponsorship from Surrey County Council, Chelsea Football Club Foundation and numerous small businesses, community groups and people in Cobham and Oxshott. Sir Gerald said, “Semi-rural services like ours can never make a profit and we are forever grateful to our local communities and residents for their continued financial support.” Now with charitable status to its name, Chatterbus was launched in April 2015 after official reports and on-the-ground research had shown the Cobham area to be in ‘transport poverty’, especially across the A3 between Cobham and Weybridge. Sir Gerald Acher said “The service has proved more popular with the whole community than we ever imagined possible. We are now setting it up in a sustainable way to ensure its continued success.”

Project Wenceslas RETURNS

This is a special appeal to readers of this journal to help others less well off than themselves.

If you receive the fuel allowance from the Department of Work and Pensions of £100 annually in November, please would you consider donating the sum to Project Wenceslas, organised by the Leatherhead Lions Club? The money received is ring-fenced for the single purpose of of assisting those people who have difficultly in paying their gas and electricity bills. The Citizens Advice Bureau monitors applications for funding, and claims are usually paid in the form of credits on prepayment meter cards. Over the last four years, the Lions have helped over 100 clients to the tune of £22,000 in settling fuel bills.

It’s not just the elderly who ask for help, it’s all ages at all levels of society, and as long as the price of fuel remains high, the problem is not going to go away. Your donation will be safe with the Lions and will be fairly distributed to those in need. So, just like the poem of Good King Wenceslas helping the poor man, be a “Wenceslas” yourself: it’s going to be a cold winter, so they say, so don’t let others suffer from lack of heating. Please complete the coupon or follow the Just Giving instructions of www.leatherheadlions.org.uk All donations will be acknowledged.

St Andrew’s Church & School TAKE PART IN OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

St Andrew’s Church and St Andrew’s School in Cobham have again joined in one of the world’s largest children’s Christmas projects

As in previous years, St Andrew’s Church and school have taken part in Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, a tangible way to help needy children around the world. Church members and school children packed shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, including pens and pencils, notebooks and colouring books, hygiene items such as soap, flannel, toothbrush and toothpaste, a hairbrush or comb, plus

34 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2017

other items such as a hat, gloves, hair accessories and small gifts etc - you would be amazed at what you can get in a shoebox! These are then taken to a collection centre from where they are sent to children living in deprived countries around the world. Thanks to members of the church and school, over 110 shoeboxes are on their way from the St Andrew’s Cobham Community. Well done to everyone involved.

Surrey Voices SHINE IN VALETTA, MALTA

195 members of three local choirs travel to take part in the 23rd International Choir Festival

Surrey was well represented in Malta last week, as three local choirs travelled together to take part in the 23rd International Choir Festival. An impressive party of 195 singers and supporters from Surrey Music’s two community choirs (Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir), together with Vox Mundi International Ladies Choir from Egham, enjoyed a five-day trip full of sightseeing and singing. The two Elmbridge Choirs have previously participated together in choral festivals and were delighted to invite the 16 members of Vox Mundi to join them for this trip. All three choirs were accompanied by Vox Mundi’s pianist, David Darby. As well as performing in parish churches in St Julian’s and Gozo, where each choir sang songs from their own repertoire, the choirs had the honour of leading the festival’s ‘Singing and Praying for Peace’ ceremonies in the magnificent St John’s CoCathedral in Valletta. The choirs’ musical directors, Cliff van Tonder (Elmbridge Choir), Christine Parker (Elmbridge Ladies Choir) and Jennifer Bell (Vox Mundi), were privileged to conduct 33 choirs, totalling 1020 choristers! ‘It was the most amazing experience, conducting our choir and a huge audience in such a stunning venue - a very special memory which will stay with me forever,’ says Cliff van Tonder. ‘Singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in one of the most beautiful churches in the world was awe-

36 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2017

inspiring and highly symbolic!’ The choirs took part in the choristers’ parade, where all participating choirs took to the streets of Valletta, proudly waving their countries’ flags and singing songs in their own language - a sight and sound to behold! In addition, the Surrey choirs took their turn performing to cheering crowds from a splendid ornate bandstand at the Valletta City Gates. The choirs enjoyed sightseeing tours to Mdina and Mosta, the Three Cities, a full day on Gozo and a special evening dinner party in a fabulous restaurant, where Christine was presented with a gift to mark her first ‘official’ outing as Musical Director with Elmbridge Ladies Choir. ‘As their new Musical Director, I am so proud of them’, says Christine. ‘Their love of singing shines through in their performances as does their enjoyment of each new experience.’ Cliff was also presented with gifts from the choir members to thank him for organising such a wonderful trip. ‘Cliff has worked his socks off over the last eight months in planning this trip down to the last detail’, explains Debbie Groves from Surrey Music, ‘and we are all indebted to him for once again providing us with such fantastic opportunities and creating wonderful memories. It has been an absolutely amazing trip and we are proud to have been flying the flag not just for Surrey, but as the only UK participants, for Britain too!’

Gardening Matters DECEMBER/JANUARY TASKS Cecelia John 01372 200 000 or ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

December and January. Cold, wet, dark. What is there to like? Winter’s my least favourite season, but there are still a few jobs to do, so off we go outside (reluctantly). Divide perennials - geraniums, sedum - which are getting too large. Prise the root apart with a knife or spade: it seems brutal, but they’re pretty hardy and you can fill gaps with the divided plants. It will also maintain the health and vigour of the plants. Make sure the new location has the correct growing conditions: a sun-loving sedum won’t be impressed with deep shade. Prune grapevines now they’re dormant, and while the ladder’s out, cut back any creepers which have made themselves too comfy around gutters, especially Virginia creeper and ivy. Rejuvenate old lilacs by cutting out the thinner growth and shortening back main branches to the desired height. Lilacs are hungry beasts: a big mulch of compost will be very welcome. However, don’t be tempted to cut back ornamental grasses now, as it can kill them. Wait till spring when new growth is just emerging. Leave your rake in the shed, because a leaf litter layer (oooh, alliteration) can be beneficial. Leaving it on beds of perennials provides a duvet which protects them from harsh frosts and snow. Gardens don’t need to be pristine at this time of year. Also, put on your goggles and industrial gloves and remove all the dead yucca leaves under the crowns. Old ones will pull off, younger ones

will need cutting with sharp secateurs. Keep a watch on ponds if there’s a sharp frost. Don’t break the ice, because that sends shock waves which upset the fish. A better idea is to boil your kettle and melt a hole in the ice. Better still is to take action before a really cold snap and put a ball to float in the water. This prevents the ice forming in that area. You can buy floating electric heaters for ponds that keep a hole clear too, but you need an electric supply and a ball is WAY cheaper. Winter’s hard on garden wildlife, so feed the birds regularly, but also provide over-wintering refuges for creatures. Log piles offer safe places for toads and frogs, and they’re the gardener’s friends, since they love slugs (someone has to). Take care when lighting bonfires, as they’re popular places for hedgehogs to start hibernating. Squirrels. What can I say? Infuriating beyond measure, so cover bulbs in beds with netting to stop them digging them up and put upturned hanging baskets over bulbs in containers. And forget throwing snails over the fence (yes, own up) because they love you too much and have a homing instinct. Finally, take photos throughout the year, noting what you were/weren’t happy with, which plants flourished, which didn’t etc. This way, you can plan and improve your garden year on year. Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

VW Polo OUR FESTIVE CAR REVIEW By Ted Macauley

Next month (January) will herald the arrival of Volkswagen’s latest and boldest bid to cash in and unnerve their rivals in the highly competitive and big business small hatchback SUV market. And it comes in the petite shape of the Polo Mk6, the sixth generation of the marque and what to me looks like a surefire winner. All new and more grown up than ever before, it has improvements on its predecessors, including the abandonment of the three-door version for a five-door replacement. VW…Veritable Winners… which has amassed 14m sales worldwide, and 1.4m in the UK since 1975, has opted to lure younger buyers. Hence the updated, uprated Polo’s sharper looks and dazzling interior, oh-sobright and colourful, compared with its previous rather sombre appearance. Now it is aglow with a neatly integrated wow of an eightinch touchscreen infotainment system designed not only to be easy on the eye but uncomplicatedly convenient to the fingers, even for the ham-fisted among us. In contrast to its older relatives, the re-thought and extended wheelbase offers the distinct advantage of a more generous underbody which consequently benefits those on board, with more space in the cabin, adequate

44 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2017

leg and headroom and a superior driving position with a clear view. Boot space, too, is 25% more generous than before. There is also a fresh range of engines, taking in five 1.0 litre petrol versions as well as 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre petrols and a twosome of 1.6 diesels. It is all fine evidence that Volkswagen is chasing really hard, with so many rivals scrapping so intensely to command the SUV sharplybuilding supply chain. The Mk6 price is reckoned to be about £13,500, a whole deal dearer than, say, the equivalent Ibiza, and certainly a bigger wallet-emptier than its Polo predecessors. But as neat and tidy and economic all-rounders go, this new kid on the cylinder block will hold its own, I am sure. Setbacks? Few. It can be a wee bit noisy and harsh at certain rev levels, but that’s something you can put up with when you allow your thoughts to be overtaken by the vast benefits that accrue from this advanced and tasty mint Polo. Specification: VW Polo 1.0 TSI 95. Engine 3cylinder, 999cc turbo. Petrol. Top speed 116mph. Accleration: 0-62mph 10.8 secs. Price around £13,500 (on sale in January).

Competition Time THE STORY OF THE CAR BY GILES CHAPMAN Once in a while, but nowhere near frequently enough, there appears on the shelves a book to captivate both the senior and junior members of the family equally, like a tasty verbal treat to be relished. And that has welcomely happened with a rather splendid and superbly written and illustrated hardback of no mean size, entitled: “The Story of the Car”, priced at £12.99 and written by veteran motoring journalist and broadcaster Giles Chapman, the author of 40 books. It is a fascinatingly total trace of our private transport, our pride and joy, from its lifechanging inception 140 years ago up to the present day, pinpointing the developments from scary steam-powered slow-crawlers to the sleek iconic electric and flash flyers of nowadays, giving us the latest treats, comforts and excitement on the move.

The R C Sherriff Trust has awarded a capital grant towards a new lighting console for Cobham Players

The R C Sherriff Trust has awarded a capital grant of £750 towards a new lighting console for Cobham Players. Cobham Players have chosen an ETC Colorsource 20 to replace the existing console, which is now 15 years old. ETC is a world-leading American theatre and film lighting company and the new console should last at least 10 years. Christmas Presence Snapshot filled with expectation Promise laced with gold Duty weighed with trepidation As fevered plans unfold

The year about to breathe its last Will finish with a bow Dreams unwrapped, designed to last With secret whispered vow Silent wishes filled with joy Bloom in every girl and boy Christmas magic surely lies In fledgling wonder and surprise But yuletide memories never fade Mitten-wrapped on magic sleighs The distant sound of Santa’s call Still wakes the child inside us all

Garsons Farm COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS WITH ARRIVAL OF SANTA’S REAL REINDEER

Garsons, Winterdown Road, West End, Esher KT10 8LS | www.garsons.co.uk

Preparations are already underway at Garsons of Esher for some very special festive guests: a pair of real reindeer who will take up residence at the garden centre from Saturday 25 November. Animal lovers will have the opportunity to meet the reindeer every day until Christmas Eve, when they will go to help Santa with some very important deliveries. “It’s a very exciting time at Garsons as we build up to the festive season and we especially look forward to the arrival of our furry friends each year – we all grow quite attached to them,” says Ben Thompson, director at Garsons. “We love being able to spread a little magic at Christmas, and a glimpse of these very special animals is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. We can’t wait to welcome everyone.” As well as designing and building a custom enclosure and stables to keep the reindeer comfortable, Garsons will also recruit and train dedicated ‘reindeer helpers’ who will care for the animals during their stay. “Our top priority is always to make sure that our reindeer are happy and healthy while they’re with us, so a lot of work goes into giving them plenty of exercise, space to move around and the right nutrients,” Ben explains. “In their enclosure, they can have room to relax away from people if

they want to, but they are very inquisitive creatures and love poking their noses through the fence to meet visitors!” The annual reindeer visit to Garsons has not only become a popular event on the Christmas calendar, but has also helped the family-run business raise thousands of pounds for a different local charity each year. While there is no charge to see the reindeer, visitors are encouraged to give their spare change in collection buckets at the enclosure. Donations in 2016 totalled nearly £3,000 and went to help Carer Support Elmbridge continue their vital work with unpaid carers in the borough. This year’s nominated charity is Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust, set up by local mum Lydia Bate who lost her son Fabian to leukaemia in 2014 when he was just 12 years old. The Trust established in his name provides overnight goody bags to parents of children receiving cancer treatment, supports research into childhood cancers and organises memorable days out for children with cancer. Information: open from Saturday 25 November 2017 to Sunday 24 December 2017. Opening times: 10am - 5pm Monday to Saturday, 11am - 5pm Sunday, 10am - 1pm Christmas Eve

Volunteering with HORSLEY & BOOKHAM RIDING FOR THE DISABLED

Operating for over 30 yrs giving rides to local children & young adults with mental & physical disabilities.

Horsley and Bookham RDA is a registered charity which provides facilities to benefit disabled children and young adults by having regular contact with horses. We have been operating for over 30 years, giving rides to local children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. Each week, with the assistance of our coaches and volunteers, our riders can enjoy the horse-riding experience. This provides them with the chance to be independent, to feel a sense of achievement, and it puts smiles on their faces! Volunteers are an essential part of Horsley & Bookham RDA, and without them we couldn’t possibly function. Anyone over 12 years old may become a volunteer; training is given to everyone who joins the group and you can do as little or as much as you feel capable of. We have volunteers from a diversity of backgrounds and ages who bring their talents and enthusiasm to below

our team. The most important quality that a volunteer must have is the ability to work in a team. Many volunteers have no horse experience at all when they join, but provided you are keen to learn and have a good rapport with people, training is no problem. It’s a very rewarding and fulfilling experience and some of our volunteers have been involved for many years. We operate seven rides each week on Sunday morning, Wednesday afternoon and evening and during the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help disabled children locally, please visit horsleyandbookhamrda.co.uk or email horsleyandbookhamrda@hotmail.co.uk Horsley & Bookham RDA is 100% voluntarily run and funded. If you would like to get involved with the charity in a different way, please visit our website for further information.

SeeAbility’s dreams OF A NEW MINIBUS HAVE BECOME A REALITY Picture: SeeAbility Drivers Diana King and Imani Kinshasa receive the keys to the new vehicle

SeeAbility’s dreams of a new minibus have become a reality, thanks to local support and generous grants and donations. The charity raised over £39,000 from residents and grants, including substantial contributions from Surrey County Council – Community Improvements Fund, The Rotary Club of Ashtead, The Leatherhead Lions Club and The Victoria Foundation. The minibus will be based at the charity’s Millennium Centre in Leatherhead, providing accessible transport to sight loss and multiple disabilities. The new minibus will enable people to pursue their goals, get active and really go places – taking groups and individuals on trips to areas of interest, access sport and leisure and participate in educational excursions.

Having the minibus will enable the charity to continue to offer opportunities to people who may not otherwise have the means, confidence or ability to get out and about. Clare Oades, Manager at SeeAbility’s Millennium Centre, said: “Our volunteers and teams worked together to fundraise. The community support has been magnificent throughout, and enabled us to buy this minibus.” “It was a real lift for everyone in the centre to connect with local people, community groups and win generous grants that helped us reach our fundraising target.” “This new minibus will make such a difference to the lives of the people we support.”

“We would like to say a big thank you to the community for helping us get our minibus on the road so we can transport people safely and in comfort.”
