Welcome to our June Issue! At last, a few days of warmer weather have passed our way recently. No guarantees for June, of course, but hopefully we will be able to enjoy a few brighter days now. We have a few interesting features for you to read this month, including an amazing account about a local lady who went to Hollywood and rubbed shoulders with all sorts of stars. Henry Turner spoke to Pauline Butcher about her time spent working with Frank Zappa! We also welcome a new motoring feature by Ted Macauley. Ted lives locally and has a long-running journalistic background; he has written motoring/lifestyle features for a number of national newspapers over the years. We welcome him to our pages. There is a lot going on locally at this time of year, so do look out for information on events as you turn our pages. We have a fab competition too, win tickets to the Home Building & Renovating Show at Sandown Park! See page 52 for that. And finally, do remember Fathers’ Day on Sunday 15th June.
Wishing you all a great month. Warmest regards, Ros x

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? Whether you are thinking about saving, investment, pensions or life cover some sort of planning is needed. Usually this starts with affordability, [how much can I afford to pay for how long]. This gives us a final total – how much might I save, how much pension will be produced? Then it involves some consideration of financial risk - am I happy to invest in volatile markets to try and get better savings return, or should I stick to ‘lower risk’ investments for more predictable growth? These are very significant decisions that may shape our financial future, invest in the wrong place and lose more than we gain. Not surprisingly then, we need to really focus on the numbers. How much can we afford, how much risk can we comfortably accept? But, there’s an even more important set of numbers that should take our attention - numbers that will truly define our life and lifestyle, that should really drive our planning. Fortunately, there are only two key numbers, and in concept they are really simple. No ratios, no formulae, no complicated calculations. All it takes is a little thought. • How much do I need to make my lifestyle comfortable ? • How much do I want to leave behind me ? Then, let’s consider the real risk. How bad will it be if I don’t achieve that number? Let’s take pensions as an example, which is topical because the pension rules are changing. For the first time ever in the UK, the law will allow us to put money into a pension and be absolutely sure we can get it all back. From 2014, we will be able to plan to withdraw the whole pension fund within our lifetime, at our own rate of withdrawal. This freedom is really important since we can now plan to match our pension income to our retirement spending plans. Whilst lifetime income is important, when we consider our likely activity and spending plans in later life, we may find the state pension covers basic needs. And once we remove the need for an indefinite income stream this means we can now – for the FIRST TIME ever – work out how big our fund needs to be, without needing to guess about future annuity rates or drawdown ratios. It means we can actually plan, with certainty, how comfortable our retirement will be. The dictionary defines pension in two distinctly different ways:
Pension (noun) A regular payment: 1. By the state to people over a certain age to enable them to live without having to work. Also one made to a retired person as a result of contributions to a personal pension scheme or (in France and some other countries) 2. A relatively cheap boarding house The question then is, which of these describes your retirement plans best? As a Chartered Financial Planner, I specialise in getting best value from personal wealth for my clients and their families. I’m pleased to be able to help my clients identify their personal number then make sure their finances are set to hit the right numbers at the right time.

Advice and things you need to know
from accountants SMITH PEARMAN
Lasting Powers of ATTORNEY (LPA’s) Why might I need an LPA? obtainable through Smith Pearman. If you were to become incapable of making decisions (and this is not just Alzheimer’s – it can be due to illness or accident) who would make decisions for you? If the worst happened and you were suddenly in a coma for weeks or even months, how well would your family or your business get on if no-one could operate your bank account or make other financial decisions? Without an LPA the court can appoint someone, however this can be time consuming and expensive. With an LPA, your chosen attorney can take decisions straight away. What is a Power of Attorney? A power of attorney is a legal document you (the donor) sign giving someone else (the attorney) power to act for you. If you were buying a house but going on holiday, you might give someone power of attorney to sign the contract while you are away. You have to be over eighteen and able to make your own decisions, but otherwise anyone can make a power of attorney.
What is special about a Lasting Power of Attorney? Normally powers of attorney cease if you lose the capacity to make your own decisions. A lasting power of attorney can be used to get round this problem. They were previously called ‘enduring’ rather than ‘lasting’. There are two types of LPA: ‘health and welfare LPAs’ which allow the attorney to make decisions about medical treatment etc. which only come into force when you have lost the capacity to make decisions; ‘property and financial affairs LPAs’ which allow the attorney to make decisions about money and investments etc. and you can choose whether these come into force immediately or just when capacity is lost. What is ‘registration’ of an LPA? LPAs cannot be used until they are registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. There is no requirement to do this before it is needed, however it is a good idea to do so – if there is anything wrong with the LPA it is best to find out while another can still be signed. If you think an LPA might be something you should have, please contact us on

Hypnotherapy
Relaxation
What you can expect from hypnotherapy? Seeking professional help to reach a goal or overcome an issue can seem daunting, so one of the first things a hypnotherapist will do is establish a rapport so that you can work together and feel relaxed in their company. Hypnotherapy is a very gentle therapy. During a session, clients are deeply relaxed, but fully conscious. The principle behind this is that in this state of deep relaxation, the subconscious is more open to positive affirmations which will help you overcome issues such as a phobia, or provide the willpower needed to achieve a goal, such as giving up smoking. Speaking personally, one of the things I enjoy most about my work is that hypnotherapy can be effective for a wide range of areas, so in one day I could be supporting a client with weight loss, helping someone overcome driving test nerves and working with someone who has serious anxiety issues. When a client has achieved their objective, it is truly rewarding.

MY LIFE WITH
FRANK ZAPPA Living in Twickenham, Pauline Butcher was a well-mannered young woman, a typist and amateur model in 1967, when a chance encounter started a partnership that would fuel her writing career. Working as a typist for a London agency, Pauline was commissioned to transcribe the lyrics of musician Frank Zappa’s song, ‘Brown Shoes Don’t Make It.’ The song’s crude and abstract metaphors, as well as Zappa’s constant use of profanity, were in stark contrast to Pauline’s sensibilities. Her protests about his language and the song, along with suggestions for alternate lyrics, endeared her to Zappa and the two struck up a rapport. The association that followed is documented in her book Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa, which BBC 4 adapted into a play broadcast on Tuesday, May 6th. After their meeting, the pair kept in touch, and when Pauline took a holiday to New York in 1968 to stay with her sisters, they met again. Pauline, who had come to admire Frank as a man who actually listened to and valued her opinion, was somewhat shocked to learn that he was a married man. At dinner one night when talking with Frank, Pauline joked about a proposed book, that she could type it up for him in London.
Frank responded to the quip by offering to hire her as his secretary in California. Though taken aback, Pauline accepted the offer. Their professional relationship got off to an awkward start when Frank took Pauline back to his hotel room and asked if, were she his secretary, he’d be able to become intimate with her. Pauline, fearful of losing the job and mindful of Frank’s wife, rebuffed his advances. The star remained true to his word about the job, however, and Pauline flew on with him to California, where she went on Frank’s payroll, ostensibly as a songwriter. She was quickly shown the ‘Log Cabin’; Frank’s hangout property where she was to live for five months. Pauline recalls that it was always full of people and bandmates. “Frank liked having people around, even if he didn’t pay them much attention.” Perhaps one of the most dramatic incidents was when a gunman named ‘Raven’ arrived at the Cabin with a bag of blood and a revolver. Zappa calmly manipulated Raven and the other occupants of the cabin into walking to the nearby lake, and when there, to throw things into it. Pauline threw a twig. Fortunately, Raven threw his gun. In spite of Frank’s seemingly progressive character as a musician, some frictions did
remained in England recuperating and continued to work for Frank. Pauline had wanted to attend university in California, but back home, she became aware of eased restrictions for entering Cambridge. She took a gamble and decided to apply, even though it meant losing her Green Card. At university, she met her husband and the two married. After her spouse became active in banking, the two moved to Singapore. When they eventually moved back to Cobham, a few years ago Pauline decided to rekindle her earlier ambition to write a book. Her time with Frank was “the only story that only I could tell” and publishers showed immediate interest. The book and the new radio programme were successful. Although it may be some sixty years since Pauline developed her writing aspirations, she’s nevertheless fulfilled them. Frank, she believes, would have been proud.

develop between him and Pauline. Although he was “supportive more than anyone else in my life” of her ambitions to write, Zappa was not in favour of a newfound attraction to feminism on Pauline’s part. Additionally, he did not show any enthusiasm for Pauline’s desire to apply to the University of California. Whilst in California, Pauline had read Kate Millett’s sexual politics and came to embrace the movement. “The phrase ‘love me less, respect me more,’ really spoke to me. It was exactly what needed to be said.’ Frank was disparaging of feminism as a movement and feminists as a whole. Contrary to his womanising on the road and his rockstar persona, Frank himself was “at the core, deeply conservative.” He abhorred drug-use and was strict in banning their consumption at the cabin. He even took care to stay in a separate hotel from his band mates for fear of police intervention. In 1971, a severe ear infection prompted Pauline to fly home for an operation. She

CAR REVIEW
PEUGEOT 308 save loads of fiddling. Peugeot...or PURRgeot...put their newcomer through two million miles of rigorous testing before its recent launch. They made it lighter than its stuffy predecessor, so its fuel thirst is not so unquenchable, and re-fashioned its indoors set-up to a really comfy level with bags of room for mum and the kids. If I were a rival producer in this market, I would be one concerned body because the 308’s show-off ability is not limited to its sleek appearance but also to its agility and economy. What more could you ask? Oh yes, how much? Between £14,495 and £24,045. My top-of-the class Feline model - they also have Access, Active and Allure - was a pussycat around town and a happy-to-go performer on the motorways. PURRR-fect.... Specification: Feline. Engine 1.6. 1598cc. BHP 156. Six speed manual. Top speed 132 mph. 0-62 8.4 secs. MPG 48.7. Price :£21,345.
By Ted Macauley
Let me introduce you to the Peugeot 308, or rather, the PURR-geot Feline. As hatchbacks go - and this one certainly does -the French car maker has weighed in with an ooh-la-la of a revitalised version of the preceding older, slower, more cumbersome model. And it is a treat of a drive that takes the price and style battle right to the doorstep of its Korean rivals. Understated it may look kerbside, but as a performer with balance and pep, nippy both off the mark and on the run, the updated, uprated 308 is a winner. And the interior is as refined as can be, with innovative simplified and straightforward touch-screen instrumentation that even technical duffers like me can make sense of without having to take a degree course in clocks and dials. The 9.7-inch display, so neat and tidy with its seven buttons, warns you of just about everything - and the keyless entry and start-up

GARDENING MATTERS On a roll now, regarding the Latin/Greek names of plants, so without further ado, off we go with names given to the first element, the genus… Some generic names are simply derived from their ancient equivalent, so Symphytum is the Greek for comfrey and Faba is the Latin for broad bean (if you’ve seen The Silence of the Lambs, you’ll recognise the Italian ‘fava’ from this *shudders*); others have been changed slightly from their original meaning, with the connection still obvious: Allium, the Latin for garlic, applies to the whole genus of onions. Many names are derived from a connection with the gods and other folk from mythology, so, for example, Paeonia is named after the physician Paeon, whom Pluto turned into a flower because he was pleased with his cures. Yeah, I know, lucky chap. Achillea is named after Achilles, the Greek hero, who used it to heal wounds. Women are also represented in plant names, although not as well as men. Helenium is after Helen of Troy and is said to have sprung up where her tears fell, and Artemisia is said to be named after Queen Artemiisia of Caria (Turkey), although there are some who say it is after the Greek goddess Artemis, and means literally ‘she who heals sickness’. Plants named after real people are Latinised
to make them fit in with all the other plant names. It was bad form to name a plant after yourself, so only rarely does a plant end up with the name of its discoverer. One example of this is the Tradescants, father and son, who were renowned plant collectors in the 17th century, travelling to faraway places in search of new plants. Tradescantia is named after John Tradescant the elder, who discovered it on his travels to North America. However, plants have often been named in honour of certain people, such as Fuchsia, named after Leonhart Fuchs, a German physician and botanist. His chief claim to fame is as the author of a herbal, a large book about plants and their uses as medicines, first published in 1542 in Latin. Buddleia was named after Adam Buddle, an English botanist who died in 1715, and Forsythia (ugh, yellow) was named in honour of William Forsyth (1737–1804), a Scottish botanist. He was a royal head gardener and a founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society. Of course, it isn’t only Latin or Greek which have been used to name plants. Grossularia comes from ‘groseille’, the French for gooseberry, Tulipa from the Turkish for turban - the shape being the obvious connection – and Crocus from the Semitic for saffron. Next time, the species. Bet you can hardly wait….

HAVE IT YOUR WAY... We have seen a considerable increase in customers wanting computers for specific tasks, defined performance requirements, shapes & sizes. By way of example, we have recently supplied machines which are near-silent to act as media centres in the lounge or sound design setup for the recording studio; we have provided multimonitor systems for trading desks, powerful 3D CAD systems with multi-monitors for design and drafting purposes, high performance medical workstations with multi-solid state hard drives for high speed, durability and reliability, multi-drive machines for video and photo manipulation, where the solid state drive runs the operating system and programs and the mechanical hard drive(s) provide the data storage required. Yes, you’ve guessed it, there are loads of options and variations, and yes, it is possible to purchase a “stock” machine and adapt it, but this usually is more costly and you will end up with an inferior product. We have been designing and building PCs for the past 25 years. We are confident a TecRes custom machine will provide you with the best quality, performance and value currently available. A specific system will have been proposed, taking into account a wide variety of factors, including your needs and requirements, the system’s power requirements, cooling, appearance, noise levels. So if you feel your next machine needs to be something “a bit different” why not talk to us?
This guide was written by Les Beer from TecRes, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. How can we help you? For further information, please call 01372-370300 or email sales@tecres.co.uk

Place the bread mix in a large bowl, setting aside a handful for dusting the surface. Make a well in the centre, add 250ml lukewarm water then bring together to make a slightly sticky dough. Knead the dough vigorously for 5 minutes
until it becomes smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 4 even-sized balls, then roll out to make 26 x 12cm ovals. Transfer to 2 large, non-stick baking sheets. Preheat the oven to 220ºC, Gas Mark 7. Spoon the ricotta onto the pizza bases, then place the asparagus on top. Drizzle lightly with olive oil and leave to rise for 10 minutes. Bake for 15 minutes until the base is cooked through and the asparagus is tender. Dot over the pesto and finish with a good grinding of black pepper. Serve warm. MEDICAL MATTERS!!
DIABETES & DIET P A R T
O N E
Diet is the cornerstone for management of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) but it is often said that it is not rocket science, and really, a balanced healthy diet is what we should all be following. We are all aware that a diet for diabetes should be as low in sugar as possible. It does not mean absolutely no sugar, but rather, minimising sugar intake and avoiding adding sugar to foods and drinks is the best approach. Carbohydrates, commonly known as ‘starchy foods’ include foods such as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. When these are digested, they produce a form of sugar which may also cause a rise in blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are needed as an energy source but portion control is essential in order to avoid a potentially sharp rise in blood sugar levels after meals: for example, on a dinner plate, ideally no more than one quarter to one third of the plate should be carbohydrate. This becomes more tricky with rice and pasta meals, as they can often cover the entire plate, and the best way to manage this is to replace these ‘carbs’ with vegetables. Nutritional labels are useful as a guide to sugar content - look at ‘carbohydrates of which are sugars’. This gives some idea of what foods to avoid but is also helpful to compare foods such as different yoghurts to help identify the lowest sugar content to help make a better informed choice. I am overwhelmed by my housework?
I used to wake up in the morning and be absolutely overwhelmed by the magnitude of the tasks of the day - cleaning, shopping, gardening, more cleaning - tasks which are never actually completed. When did the hoover get so heavy, the cobwebs so high and the bedmaking so exhausting? The trouble is, I like my place clean and tidy but I just can’t do it anymore. I needed some help but how to find the right help was the problem. I didn’t want to go to someone who might prove to be untrustworthy or unreliable or just not very easy to talk to. I’m not used to telling people what to do. I don’t want to call one of the companies who “do” cleaning, as I don’t want a different person every week and pay for big profits for the company bosses. But now I’m sorted! Let me tell you how. The girl next door (a girl in her 50s) said she would look on the internet for me and found me a charity called Home Support Elmbridge. I gave them a call and the nice lady on the phone told me if I joined up for a small fee, I would be put in touch with a helper who would do my cleaning and my shopping if I wanted. She would come as often as I needed and I just pay her direct for her time as I needed it. They can even arrange help for bathing assistance (which I do not need
just yet) and even better, someone to do a bit of gardening for me. I’ve just let it go, I’m afraid, but I do enjoy sitting looking out of the window in the summer, so that would be nice. I rather like the idea of having people I get to know popping in to help me out with these jobs. It’s much better than nagging my son. He drives a long way to see me, then spends half the time working through my list of jobs. The lady in the office asked if I was claiming all the benefits I was entitled to and said if I had needed help that I couldn’t afford, HSE could also put me in touch with an organisation that would help out. I don’t need their help, but my friend Cecily really could do with a little help. She is a bit hard up and never thought she could get help. The girl next door said I should other people know about do a blog to let Home Support Elmbridge. I’m not sure what a blog is, so wrote this instead. Do get on to the nice girl at the office and ask her to join you up if you need help too. Tell her Betty sent you. Her number is 01932 267128 and if you can get on that internet thingy, the address is www. homesupportelmbridge.co.uk funny address isn’t it?
Bye for now love Betty

Transition Cobham’s Entertainment Swap For our second annual Transition Cobham swap, we exchanged books, CDs, DVDs and toys on Sunday the 27th of all ages came together to swap their unwanted items for something “new”. making Cobham, healthier, The event showed a community in action. It was about happier and more resilient sharing and coming together. It showed how much we have in common with each other. Transition Cobham is about bringing people together and creating stronger networks, so we are more resilient in the face of challenges such as climate change and rising energy prices. We are collaborating with St. Andrew’s Church on Spiritual Cinema again and this time we will be showing a documentary on climate change narrated and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio on Tuesday the 10th of June at 7pm. After our clothes swap last year and entertainment swap this year, we’re looking for inspiration for a theme for next year’s swap.
