FromEDITOR the Welcome to Look Local in March! British Summer Time is just around the corner, which means the clocks are on the verge of springing forward. We can expect longer, brighter evenings and hopefully we can save some money on the heating bills, as well as see a whole variety of spring bulbs peeping through the soil. However, in exchange for less darkness, we are handed one less hour in bed on a Saturday night. British Summer Time starts on Sunday March 26 2017 at 1.00am. It also coincides with Mothers’ Day, so a longer day to spoil your mum too!

St Andrew’s Church, Cobham

A final farewell to

Canon Robert Jenkins

On Sunday, St Andrew’s Church in Cobham said its final farewell to Canon Robert Jenkins after 13 years of devoted service as Rector of the joint Benefice of Cobham and Stoke D’Abernon, which incorporates both St Andrew’s and St Mary’s. A reception was held at St Mary’s church hall on Saturday 28th January to give Robert a chance to say goodbye to all the many groups that he has worked with over his time as Rector. These included St Andrew’s Primary School, as well as numerous local community organisations. On Sunday 29th, Robert celebrated and preached at St Andrew’s two services, where many of his faithful congregation gathered. After the services, there was a reception in Church Gate House and presentation of

gifts, which included an engraved wine decanter and a fountain pen. Later, Robert went to preach at Choral Evensong at St Mary’s, after which a farewell reception was held and a presentation was made to recognise his contribution to the life of St Mary’s. We all wish Robert a wonderful retirement and thank him so much for all the hard work he has done over the years to grow our churches. Robert has encouraged and supported members of our church to enter the ministry, become lay readers, pastoral assistants and many other roles, including our new Children and Youth Minister, for which we are so grateful. His legacy will ensure that St Andrew’s and St Mary’s continue to grow and thrive.

PUPPY PADS...

Reader Lucy Miles is collecting her new puppy soon and asks: are puppy pads a good idea for house training puppies? In short, yes, they are a useful training tool, but they shouldn’t be used too much or for too long. Puppy pads are specially scented pads designed to encourage dogs to relieve themselves on the pad rather than the floor, and being highly absorbent, they keep mess and odours to a minimum. Good news in the first days of a puppy’s life in its new home! However, while it’s important to teach your puppy to use the pad in the house, it’s more important and natural that it learns to go to the loo outside. This should always be your long-term aim. Start by using the pads in the house but near the door, and reward your puppy when it uses it. Once it understands what’s required, as soon as you see it heading for the pad or circling to go to the toilet the next time, take the pup outside immediately. Once it’s done its business outside, praise and reward hugely. Make it seem like this is the best thing ever and the message will soon get through! Continue the process until your puppy is heading for the door with no need for the pad. Remember to stay vigilant for the signs so that no opportunity is missed and accidents don’t occur. Within weeks, you should have a fully house-trained puppy and no need for puppy pads. Like nappies, their job is now done and it’s time to move on. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

Woking & Sam Beare Hospice

Be fashion forward WITH A LADIES’ LUNCH & FASHION SHOW FOR THE WOKING & SAM BEARE HOSPICE

Don’t miss your chance to buy your sought-after ticket to the highly popular sixth annual Ladies’ Lunch and Fashion Show in aid of Woking & Sam Beare Hospices at Cobham’s Hilton Hotel on Monday 13 March. The lunchtime event showcases male and female models – ranging from 16 to 80 years old and sizes 8 to 22 styled in outfits taken from the high street and the charity’s retail shops. Models weave in among the tables to display the clothes after lunch is enjoyed. Guests can guess where each outfit originates from, and the New Victoria Theatre in Woking has kindly donated a pair of tickets as a prize to whoever guesses the highest number of outfits correctly. In six years, no-one has yet guessed every outfit correctly, so the (very fashionable) gauntlet is laid down! Co-organiser Pam Ling said: ‘Guests have an opportunity to buy the items featured on the models after the show, and we have lots of entertainment, including a wonderful performance from members of Rock Choir. We’d like to thank John Lewis in Kingston, Swoon Bridal, the Hilton Hotel and the New Victoria Theatre for their support, and also Barclays Bank for match-funding again. We’ll also have Clarins with us to offer beauty advice.

24 Looklocal Magazine - March 2017

We’re looking forward to welcoming all our guests to a fabulous event, including our raffle of ladies’ luxuries, kindly donated by many local retailers, with a top prize worth £500 of a round of golf for four people at Burhill Golf Club.’ Pam and her friend Margaret Watford set up the event after two of Pam’s friends and Margaret’s husband passed away in the care of Sam Beare Hospice. They wanted to fundraise by doing something a little different and the lunch and fashion show event was created. Last year, the event raised £7,500 towards the charity’s work of providing palliative care to more than 1,400 people each year in both the hospice setting and in the community, and providing on-going support to relatives. Funds raised will also support the charity’s new 20-bedroom state-of-the-art hospice in Goldworth Park, Woking, due to open in the spring. To purchase your ticket, please call Pam on 01932 243 521 or Margaret on 01932 228 525. Tickets are £32 per person and include your meal, a glass of wine or a soft drink, plus a wonderful fashion show and entertainment. The event runs from 12noon to 3pm. To find out more about this and other fundraising events, visit www.wsbhospices.co.uk.

Gardening Matters

Gardening Season Well, here’s March already and it’s officially now The Gardening Season. Pruning tasks predominate, hooray, so arm yourself with a sharp pair of secateurs. There are 4 good reasons to prune: firstly, to create an open centre so that air can circulate; secondly, to remove unnecessary parts so that growth is stimulated; next, to control the quantity of fruit/flower; and finally, to remove dead/diseased/damaged material.

I

f in doubt, the golden rule is prune immediately after flowering. Cut back to an outward facing leaf bud (or potential bud swelling) to avoid branches crossing in the centre. Make it a clean cut with no jagged edges as close as possible to the bud without nicking it with the secateurs. Slant the cut downwards so that moisture drains away from it. To thin a shrub, take out 1 in 3 of the branches altogether. If you cut the side branches, you’ll encourage it to grow taller, and cutting the tops off branches will make it bushier. So, plants to prune now include roses, winter-flowering clematis, viburnum, daphne, skimmia, some irises, heathers and hellebores, and gooseberry and currant bushes. Winter jasmine can be tidied too. Personally, I hate yellow, so as far as I’m concerned, you can butcher it, but I know many people

like the splash of colour it provides in bleak old winter. Prune fuchsias to where new shoots are evident at ground level and tidy up bush fuchsias. Pinch out straggly shoots of pinks and shear the tops if they’re too woody/leggy. Cut back deciduous shrubs such as lavatera and buddleia to a growth point 6-9 inches from the ground, and cornus to 3 inches. This seemingly harsh pruning maintains shape, vigour and health, and with cornus, the colour. Some shrubs become so overgrown, old and downright ugly that they too need a hard prune to 6 inches. You’ll miss out on 1 or 2 years’ flowering but may save a shrub otherwise doomed for the bonfire. Beech, laurel, privet and rhododendron all respond well to hard pruning, but afterwards, the plant will be in shock, so hoe in Growmore or pelleted poultry manure and

water well. Feed rhododendrons with ericaceous feed. Avoid cutting plants such as lavender/santolina/rosemary right down into the brown woody part because they’ll die. Cut down by all means, but to a green growth point. OK, pruning lecture over. Other tasks for March? Well, you could prepare seed beds, feeding with Growmore whilst doing so. Plant summer flowering bulbs, such as nerines, agapanthus and freesias, making sure you plant them shallow. In contrast, gladioli need to be planted 2½ times as deep as the bulb is tall. Gladdies dislike damp (we’re so alike), so add compost and 1 inch of grit/sharp sand for drainage and sit the bulb on top. Finally, plant out onion sets. By now, your spring bulbs should be exploding into colour, so sit back and delight in the fruits of your hard autumn graft – and pat yourself on the back.

Tecres - Computer Tips

Goodbye, Vista . . This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.

If you have a Windows Vista machine, 11 April 2017 will have significance to you, as from this date onwards, your Vista installation will be unsupported. But what does this really mean? Your PC will continue to work, but you will not receive any updates from Microsoft. Superficially, you may think this doesn’t present a problem, but this is a naive way to think if you use the internet. The probability is you use your machine for online banking, shopping and/or social media such as Facebook. As they see your machine as not up-to-date and unsecured, you represent a breech to their security and they will stop you accessing their services. Many browsers such as Internet Explorer & Google Chrome have stopped supporting Vista. There are non-mainstream browsers that will work, but all you are doing is delaying the inevitable of having to replace the machine. We can copy all your data and settings from your machine to a new one and offer advice as to what you need to be looking for in a new machine.

Fake warnings‌. Rather than the usual Microsoft scam where someone phones you up and claims to be from Microsoft, you get a pop on your screen usually when on the internet, claiming to be from them. We have seen a variety of different text options, sometimes claiming they have found a problem with your machine, stating you have a virus infestation that is now affecting others, or anonymous and suspicious activity is coming from your machine. They proceed to provide you with a phone number, saying it is for Microsoft and asking you to call them as soon as possible so that they can fix the problem for you. If you get this pop-up on your screen, we highly advise that you DO NOT call this company: it is not Microsoft attempting to contact you about a fault. This is a scam. We have experienced this problem on both PCs and Macs. The probability is that you do have some malware on your machine and it could be doing all sorts of harm, so it does need to be sorted out. For further information, please contact us.

my current on-air adventures Kitchen design | Replacement doors Replacement worktops | Professional build For those listeners who’ve been curious about my current on-air adventures, I’m now plying my trade with a fresh new radio station called My Music Radio, which is part of the Eagle family of radio stations. My pal Pat Sharp and I began our individual weekend shows when My Music Radio first went into action in November last year. The radio station specialises in the 70s (and more) and has already become one of the brightest and most energetic shows on the radio. I feel like a born-again broadcaster, with a smart bunch of radio lovers and ‘desk jockeys’ supporting our endeavours. If you haven’t yet discovered our terrific My Music Radio Live Hour, join us each weekday evening at 8, when we play 60 minutes of classic live performances from a different artist or band, such as Queen, David Bowie, Abba, Diana Ross and many more. Don’t miss it. Other specialist shows include the My Music Radio Saturday Night Party and our Jazz, Big Band and Swing show. If you miss any of our programmes or just simply want to listen again, you can do so by visiting the On Demand section of our free mobile app or by visiting mymusicradio.co.uk You’ll find me and my new show on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10, and Pat takes over from me on both days from 2pm. I look forward to your company soon.

March Car Review

Skoda Kodiaq

Ted Macauley test drives the Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI, and lets us know what it has to offer....

L

et me start at what is usually off-puttingly the postscript in the last line or thereabouts in a new car review : £28,245. That is far from what you would expect to fork out for a big shot, four-wheel drive humdinger of a bargain buy. But yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. That is the asking price for the Skoda Kodiaq, the company’s first seven-seater, a long-awaited and welcome challenger to the pricier rivals in the fast-accelerating SUV market. The Skoda, once a make to be avoided at all costs, a cheapskate, sniggeredat brand you would be reluctant to admit you owned, has, under Volkswagen’s take-over steerage, zoomed in as a desirable front runner and has underpinned its reputation and rescued the Skoda name even further with the Kodiaq. So much so that it clinched a Car of the Year accolade as the Best Large

SUV in What Car? And to my mind, utterly and thoroughly deservedly. The Kodiaq – named after the largest known big bear – was also blessed with the award of ‘Best Family Car in the World’ in Top Gear magazine, and I would bet the honours won’t stop there. I am told the design aces and engineering geniuses took notice of customer needs and desires, got their heads together and brainwaved the newcomer as the already-in-place Yeti’s bigger, sturdier, posher, big brother. And now the worries must be piling up on the opposition 4x4 likes of Kia, Mazda, Ford and Land Rover, with their costlier products that do not really out-equip or out-perform this worthy Skoda frontrunner. All the required and desired information goodies, dials and buttons are neatly and handily stacked in unfussy style, and it is a comfort-zone on the move, with an off-road agility, excellent adaptive suspension system and capability that

cope without discomforting its seven occupants in its classy cabin. This is a real range-topper, and the cheaper Kodiaqs make even more sense as a treat to your bank balance. Okay, I know that the third row of seats may not be as accommodating as some of the rivals, but they are still plenty adequate for the teens or toddlers joining Mum, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma for seaside outings. The ongoing advance of the Skoda brand under VW’s expertise is a complete reversal of its historic nothank-you reputation, and last year, more than 1.13million of its cars were eagerly bought in 102 countries. When the Kodiaq word gets around off the back of its excellence, I guarantee that those numbers will take an upturn, leaving the company’s money men as chuffed as the customers who will be revelling in their value-for-money transport. Specification: my choice: 2.0 TDI 150 4x4. MPG 52.3. Top speed 130mph 0-60 in 9 secs. Price £28.245.

Elmbridge Borough Council COMMUNITY SAFETY SURVEY 2017 - HAVE YOUR SAY Residents, businesses and community groups in Elmbridge are being asked their opinions on community safety in 2017 to influence the priorities in the Partnership Action Plan for the coming year. The Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership has published a new survey to obtain the views of residents and businesses on the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as the actual level of crime being experienced. This is not a statutory survey, but it will support the development of the action plan for the Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership in the coming year (2017/18). Councillor Mary Marshall, Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Community

Development at Elmbridge Borough Council, says, ‘The Borough of Elmbridge is a safe place to live, work and visit. We would like to hear your views on community safety matters, as we are always looking to ensure residents feel safe and secure, as well as make improvements. The results of this survey will inform and influence the work that the Elmbridge Community and Safety Partnership will undertake in 2017/2018, so please make your views count by returning our survey.’ This survey will run from 7 February to 6 March 2017. A summary of the results will be put on the Elmbridge Borough Council website in April 2017, along with our updated Partnership Action Plan.

Flying High: treetop learning at

ACS Cobham International School opens new treehouse for Lower School students

T

his week, ACS Cobham delighted students and staff by unveiling a newly built trio of treehouses in the Lower School playground. Designed and built by Highlife Tree House company, the new addition to the school has been developed to promote imaginative outdoor learning and play. The three structures, connected by rope bridges, are all different in their functions and character. While the first treehouse provides a unique outdoor classroom space, the second and third are imaginative, playful structures in the form of a fairy house and a castle, complete with slides and cargo nets. ‘We know that children need to be encouraged and nurtured

50 Looklocal Magazine - March 2017

to engage with nature in meaningful ways and the addition of these treehouses will foster creative and cooperative student play, allow some risk-taking, and provide teachers with a unique outdoor classroom space,’ said Lacy Chapman, Lower School Principal at ACS Cobham. The treehouse design was based on a consultation with teachers and students, and a review of research about creative play. The houses were unveiled this week at an opening ceremony, attended by the Lower School students and staff. Lacy added: ‘We are really excited to be able to add this amazing and much-anticipated feature to our playground!’ Find out about ACS Cobham at www.acs-schools.com

Three Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak (Hardback £14.99) Set in Istanbul and Oxford from the 1980s to the present, this novel delves into the history of three young women and their rebellious university professor. Peri, a wealthy Turkish housewife and mother, has her handbag snatched as she is stalled in traffic en route to a dinner party, and a photograph of the four falls to the ground. Memories of the past that she has tried to put behind her emerge to envelop her throughout the lavish dinner party. Peri tries to resolve the painful issues that have haunted her since the scandal that tore their friendship apart, while the party guests are caught up in the complexities of life in a strife torn Turkey.

The Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain (Paperback £8.99) Beginning in a small town in Switzerland just after the war, Rose Tremain’s novel tells the story of Gustav, the son of a dead and disgraced policeman, and his deep friendship with Anton, a musical prodigy whose parents are wealthy Jews. Anton however is self-centred and takes Gustav - often lonely - for granted. A subtle understated book that leaves an indelible mark.

The Ashes of London by Andrew Taylor (Paperback £8.99) Set in 1666, a momentous year for London, this is a rollicking historical thriller. After the Restoration, Royalists and Republicans have to come to terms uneasily with their respective pasts. Charles II’s ministers remain acutely aware of threats and plots when, in the aftermath of the Great Fire, a body is found ritually slain. A minor government functionary, himself the son of a Republican, is given the task of investigation.

Tai Chi for Charity

A very relaxing fundraiser Start your weekend with meditation in motion at a Tai Chi fundraiser on Saturday 25th March at Stoke D’Abernon Village Hall.

L

iz Kendall will be introducing Yang Family Style 13-Movement 5-Element Tai Chi QiGong in a two hour workshop, in exchange for donations to Woking and Sam Beare Hospices. Liz started learning Tai Chi and QiGong alongside Taoist meditation in 2006, and qualified to teach in 2016. Tai Chi is a series of flowing movements with slow steps, keeping the spine upright. There are many different forms and traditions. Each movement has a martial arts application, giving meaning and purpose to every gesture. Liz loves the experience of continual progress and improvement it offers, and says “Tai Chi is a life-long companion; we can aim for perfection while enjoying where we are”. Tai Chi has many proven health benefits, with studies from Harvard and Reuters demonstrating a wide range of positive results. The effects of Tai Chi range from improving flexibility, posture and balance to lowering high blood pressure and reducing stress. Liz says “Tai Chi teaches us a graceful efficiency of movement, fine-tuning our physical awareness and responses. I often do Tai Chi to prepare for giving Shiatsu and massage. It’s an energising start to the day.” For the past eight years, Liz has held an annual Shiatsuthon, giving Shiatsu treatments in exchange for donations to charity. After Tai Chi teacher training, she saw a good opportunity for another fundraiser to bring people together in a shared experience. “It’s a chance to try something new, whether it’s your first time doing Tai Chi or you’ve been practising a different form for years. I hope that people will leave feeling strong, balanced and calm after Tai Chi, and happy that they have helped our community hospices.” Currently, Woking and Sam Beare Hospices are building a new hospice in Goldsworth Park. This will expand and improve their ability to help people with terminal

and chronic illness and to provide respite care for their families. There are many ways to support their work, whether by volunteering, fundraising or attending one of the many events on offer. The Tai Chi for Charity workshop will be held from 10am until 12 noon on Saturday 25th March at Stoke D’Abernon Village Hall on Station Road, KT11 3BN. Tai Chi is suitable for most people, and Liz will start the workshop with an energising warm-up and chi selfmassage to make sure everyone is feeling fit and ready to explore the movements. Advance booking is essential so to reserve your place Please contact Liz on 07944 872332 or liz@surrey-shiatsu.co.uk. Liz is a member of the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain and is insured. OF THE MONTH

Never say die

Holidays at Camber Sands. Candyfloss and sandals. Shillings for the meter. Stacks of Prices Candles. Coalmen carrying heavy sacks. Coke and coal upon their backs, Their hands and faces midnight black. For me they’ll never die Free school milk and toffee apples. Walking home in smog. Early morning paper rounds - fear of barking dogs Radio from Sunday noon. Two-Way Family Favourite tunes. And Round the Horn - the arch buffoons. How could they ever die? Tommy Cooper’s bungled tricks. Henry Cooper’s ‘ammer. F.A. Cups at Wembley. Ronnie Barker’s stammer. Wimbledon – no mobile phones. Sportsmanship without the moans. Dan Maskell’s educated tones. I’ll never let them die. Massive oaks and lush green grass. Horses pulling carts. Milk floats filled with rattling crates. Pubs with beams and darts. At five on Saturday in his chair, Dad would check his pools with care And dream of being a millionaire. Those scenes will never die. Soft white snow on Christmas Day. Cricket on the green. Balaclavas, Burton’s suits. Trains that spouted steam. All the memories on my list have brought me joy. There’s some I miss! But I’ll be free to reminisce. Until the day I die.
