Welcome to Look Local in March! Isn’t this a great time of year? As daffodils bloom and the days are gradually becoming a little longer again, spring is certainly in the air. Mothers’ Day is just around the corner and Easter is at the end of the month, so maybe some family time for many of us too? It’s been a busy time for Look Local, and as February was a short month, a quick turn around was required, so we’ve been working our socks off to bring you this month’s magazine. Luckily, there is plenty going on locally to fill our pages, and we are delighted to bring you news from many local groups and organisations, including a special Mayor’s Charity Concert and a number of events at the nearby River Barn Arts Centre. We are lucky to have so many wonderful attractions on our doorstep here in Cobham. I don’t know about you, but I often forget that people travel from far and wide to visit places such as Painshill Park, Bockett’s Farm or RHS Wisley Gardens. We include some news on events at Wisley and Painshill this spring, as well as information on a wonderful Mother’s Day option too. Our February front cover generated some interest, a kissing couple statue for a Valentine’s theme. For anyone who is interested, this statue is located in Sarasota, Florida, but I also had a call from a gentleman in Weybridge who said he had seen a version of the same at an Italian port when he was on a cruise, so maybe there are several of them. It is based on a famous photograph taken in Times Square by a gentleman called Alfred Eisenstaedt in 1945, minutes after news broke of Japan’s surrender to the US. His iconic black and white photograph then appeared on the front cover of LIFE magazine. It seems to be a ‘Marmite’ image... you either love it or hate it. Anyway, we simply liked the the statue and thought it provided a striking front cover for the month of love. This month’s cover is a less historical image, but pretty all the same, I hope you agree. Wishing you a great month, until next time….

Some Fun Dentistry Facts... • DRINK WATER AFTER YOU EAT – drinking water helps prevent cavities, aids in digestion and helps the body absorb nutrients!

• DID YOU KNOW... it’s not really sugar that’s attacking your teeth? Instead, BACTERIA eat the sugar found in all the food that you eat, creating acids that wear away your enamel and cause cavities.

• THINK ABOUT IT: brushing your teeth is the only time you clean your skeleton! • WHY DOES TOOTHPASTE MAKE ORANGE JUICE TASTE BAD? It’s the foaming agent

in toothpaste that blocks the sweet taste receptors on our tongues and highlights the bitter ones.

• TONGUE TWISTERS... 85% of the population can curl their tongue into a tube. • The most VALUABLE TOOTH belonged to Sir Issac Newton. In 1816, one of his teeth was sold in London for $3,633... the tooth was set in a ring!

• SHINE BRIGHT LIKE THE MAYANS! About 2500 years ago, the Mayans showed their deep understanding of dentistry and even bejewelled their own teeth, using early drills.

• The blue whale is the LARGEST mammal on earth, but it can only eat tiny shrimp because it has NO TEETH! • A MOUSE’S TEETH NEVER STOP GROWING! Part of why mice chew on everything is because their teeth NEVER stop growing. If they didn’t constantly gnaw, their teeth could end up being LONGER than their body!

• The average WOMAN smiles 62 times a day, whilst the average MAN smiles about 8 times a day. • TOOTH ENAMEL is the HARDEST substance in the human body... however, we do not recommend that you use your pearly whites as tools!

• Giraffes only have BOTTOM TEETH!

MARCH Book Reviews ‘‘Amazons’ by John Man (Hardback £20 - £9.99 paperback being published in April) This is a tremendously enjoyable ride through the legends, lands and lives of the Amazons - the real ones. The idea of a society of warrior women has endured for 2,500 years. Recent archaeological discoveries have confirmed their existence, although not quite matching the classical images that we have inherited. John Man is a writer with a firm grip on his subject, and the provable facts gained from new research are just as astonishing as the myths he debunks. Man is also a storyteller of great skill, whose writing illuminates lost cultures and brings individual figures to life with intimacy and wit. I gladly followed him on epic journeys across Europe, Central Asia and South America and across time to meet the feared enemies of Ancient Greece and the Kurdish women warriors fighting in Syria and Iraq today. A truly fascinating book. ‘Dark Pines’ by Will Dean (paperback £12.99) Gavrik is an isolated town on the edge of the 600 square kilometre Utgard Forest in Sweden. Its local paper ‘Gavrik Posta’ has a deaf reporter, Tuva Moodyson. She is sent out to cover the story of a body found with gunshot wounds in the forest. Nothing especially odd about that - Gavrik is a hunting community and accidents happen. However, this body has its eyes gouged out and not by an elk. Dark Pines is extraordinarily well written. Utgard itself is a dark and brooding character, full of mysterious corners and surprises. Tuva’s deafness and her daily battle with hearing aid batteries and those who doubt her ability to do her job are objectively reported. Dark Pines is the first in a series by Will Dean (an English writer) featuring Tuva and I am looking forward to the sequel. ‘Lullaby’ by Leila Slimani (paperback £12.99) Right from the start, we know that the children have been murdered by their nanny, Louise. Paul and Myriam are a successful Parisian couple, he in the music industry, she as a lawyer. When the couple’s two children come along in quick succession, Myriam loses her sense of self and returns to work. This is when an ageless doll-like widow with fastidious manners enters their life and becomes indispensable. However, soon mistrust and jealousies seep into this fragile family and result in tragedy.

Slow cooked pig’s cheeks WITH PEA TOPS AND SEARED SCALLOPS

Rich and tender pig’s cheeks combine perfectly with sweet, delectable scallops in this easily prepared dish.

Ingredients 6 pig’s cheeks, about 400g, or alternatively try 500g essential Waitrose Pork Belly Joint (see below) Seasoned flour 1 tbsp olive oil 75ml dark soy sauce 100g clear honey 300ml Cooks’ Ingredients Chicken Stock 4-5 star anise 20ml Cooks’ Ingredients Chinese Rice Vinegar 4 Canadian roeless scallops 10g butter 25g Waitrose pea tops

Method

Preheat the oven to 150ºC, Gas Mark 2. Coat the pig’s cheeks in seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish on the hob, add the pig’s cheeks and cook for for 1–2 minutes until browned. Add the soy sauce, honey, stock, star anise and rice vinegar. Cover and bake in the oven for about 3 hours until the pork is tender and falling apart. Just before the pork is done, sear the 4 scallops in the butter in a small frying pan for 2–3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. To serve, place the pig’s cheeks together in the centre of 2 plates, top with a handful of pea tops and 2 scallops, then lightly drizzle with some of the cooking liquid.

Variation

Instead of pig’s cheeks, this dish works just as well with an essential Waitrose Pork Belly Joint (about 500g). Place the joint, skin side up, into an ovenproof dish. Drizzle with oil, season and roast in a preheated oven (200 degrees centigrade, gas mark 7) for 20–30 minutes, until the skin is crispy. Reduce the heat to 150 degrees centigrade, gas mark 2. Add the soy sauce, honey, stock, star anise and rice vinegar, then cover and bake for 3 hours, until the pork is meltingly tender.

Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 180 mins Serves: 2 Recipe reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes

Gardening matters BIRDS IN SPRING

Cecelia John

: 01372 200 000

Spring is the breeding season for wild birds, because days are longer and milder and there’s often an abundance of food to feed their chicks. However, temporary food shortages can occur at almost any time: if this happens during the breeding season, putting out extra food can make a big difference to the survival of young birds. Many birds naturally seek out insects to feed their offspring. They’re a good source of protein, which is essential for growth and development, so mealworms for birds at this time of year are a great idea. Soak them in water before putting them out, and avoid putting too many out at once, as they’ll turn mouldy more quickly. Suet products, such as nuggets or pellets, are also perfect because they’re soft and easy to eat. Avoid peanuts and fat during the spring, as these can be harmful if adult birds feed them to their nestlings. If you do put out peanuts, use suitable mesh feeders to prevent young birds choking on large pieces. And never feed bread to birds, despite what you did as children: it has little nutritional value and fills them up without giving them any of the nutrients they need. And calcium: birds can’t store in their bodies the amount they need to make egg shells, so when they’re ready to lay their eggs, they need a good source. There are various products on the market containing calcium for strong eggshells, bone and feather growth and the formation of strong beaks in chicks. Good hygiene is particularly important during milder

26 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

: ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

months. Bird food deteriorates more quickly then, providing ideal conditions for harmful bacteria, so monitor your supply carefully, reducing the amount you’re offering if it takes time to disappear. A bird table or hanging feeders are preferable to ground feeding: rats are attracted to leftover food and often carry diseases, which can affect birds or people. And cats have it far too easy if food is placed on the ground. Keep bird tables and surrounding areas clean and free from droppings/ mouldy food, which are breeding grounds for parasites and bacteria. Clean and wash your bird table and hanging feeders regularly with a 5% disinfectant solution and move feeding stations to a new area every month to prevent droppings gathering underneath. If large amounts accumulate, clear them and clean the ground with disinfectant. All birds need to drink. They also need water to keep their feathers in good condition. Not many gardens provide birds with safe drinking and bathing facilities, so anything you do will help. Bird baths are the easiest option, so provide a shallow dish, containing at least 2.5cm of water. Rinse water containers daily, especially in warmer weather, and let them dry before adding fresh water. Droppings can accumulate in bird baths, so keep an eye there too. It will take a while for word to get round the bird population, but when it does, enjoy the various types and sizes that flock (haha) to your garden.

Windows update DATA BACKUP AND

01372 370300

sales@tecres.co.uk

www.tecres.co.uk

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tec Res in Leatherhead, which has been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Windows Update system has been a focus for us over this month. We have seen a problem caused to machines which were originally Windows 7 or Windows 8 and which took the Windows 10 update as an upgrade. As a part of the Windows Update process, some important files are downloaded to a hidden partition on your PC’s hard drive. However, the new downloaded files are larger than the available space on the hidden partition on the hard drive. The solution for this is not an easy one, as it involves resizing all the partitions available on the C drive. This is not something that the average user can do: there is a possibility that the resizing will fail, rendering your machine not bootable, with major access issues to your data. Although it doesn’t address this problem, there are ways that you can control some of your Windows updates by going to your Start button, then to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for Updates. We would always encourage you to take the latest

30 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

Windows updates, as this ensures you are kept secure. Data Backup We can’t stress enough the importance of data backup, and we provide automatic cloud data backup as a part of our Total Care Support package. If you would prefer to make your own backup arrangements, Windows 10 has a very easy-to-use feature called File History. This is a continuous backup program which copies your data to an external drive from your data libraries, desktop and contacts folder. Once it has created a master backup, it copies changed data every hour (by default) to your external drive. It is fast and effective, and our only recommendation once you have created a backup is not to leave the backup drive adjacent to your computer: both devices would be impacted in the same way in the event of a fire or flood, so keep your backup drive elsewhere. You can back up on to a memory stick or an external hard drive, the costs of which range from £8.00 and upwards from there.

ASK BRUCE

EASTER EGG ADVICE

Look Local reader Emma asks why mustn’t dogs eat Easter eggs and what should you do if they do? Human chocolate is poisonous to dogs. It contains theobromine which is a chemical that is toxic to them. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous, as it contains higher levels of theobromine than milk chocolate. However, both should be avoided. Prevention, as always, is better than cure. But if you do find your dog has helped themself, you must take immediate action. Digesting the chocolate can cause them to fit and can lead to heart issues. Call your vet immediately to get advice if your dog does eat chocolate. Better still, stop them from stealing your Easter eggs by buying them their own. There are lots of pet websites offering doggy Easter eggs which are made with carob, a dog-friendly alternative to chocolate. And some are even peanut butter and yoghurt flavoured, so the chances are they will prefer them to yours! Whatever you get up to this Easter, enjoy the break and some well-earned time with your four-legged friends Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. HOME WANTED! Rory & Rita

Big & fluffy Rory and his sleek black & white sister Rita were rescued by 2 of our volunteers after their previous owners threatened to shoot them if we did not take them. They were both very distressed when they came into care however have learned how to trust people again and both are very affectionate with people they know. Rita is very playful and loves adventuring whilst Rory prefers to snuggle up on a nice warm bed - something they had never experienced before coming into our care! Rory & Rita adore other cats and are looking for an understanding and patient home with no children. Mazda MX

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

The first rays of spring sunshine, hopefully heralding a tanning summer, spotlight the desirability of fresh-air jaunts in an open top motor. And here I cite the bliss of being able to do it in a tiny treasure of transport, namely the petite Mazda MX5, a four wheel joy, the car that accounts for half of all its UK sales right across Europe. Despite our changeable weather, the UK is the largest market for convertibles and the heralded Mazda reigns supreme. And here’s a reminder for comparison: the rival Lotus Elise is priced £6,000 more than this eager beaver of Japanese automotive genius and invention. The two-seater is also recognised as the world’s best selling sports car, as revealed in the Guinness World Record books. And that to me is no surprise whatsoever: it is a double-deal benefit, being a fun car in which to revel and a real bargain buy. Inside it is cosy and close-fitting and its performance from its front engine is eager and responsive, with a sharp manual gear change ability that gets the most out of its six speed box. And I must confess the entry level MX5 1.5-litre job, with its short shift perfection, is every bit as delightful a treat to drive as the pricier 2.0-litre rangetopper.A show-off weekend in the Lake District, with its testingly variable winding lanes and roads, climbs and

50 Looklocal Magazine - March 2018

descents, underlined the Mazda’s eagerness to please. Its road-holding and two wheel drive fill you with confidence, and at the same time, urge you to have fun and thrills in complete safety. And with the hood down, despite a typically around-Windermere nippy atmosphere, the cocooned cosiness was complete, with no intrusive draught for either me or a warmth-seeking Trophy Wife to moan about. If needs be, and if you get caught out by shower, you can up the hood on the go in five seconds. Like everything else with this desirable third-generation cabrio, the designers have been painstaking in ensuring its tradition and reputation remain firmly intact. In its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, it emerged as the spiritual successor to the British sports cars of the Fifties and Sixties…the Triumph Spitfire, Austin Healey 100, MGA and Lotus Elan. And it has never looked back, outlasting and overtaking the lot. In America, it is dubbed the ‘Miata’…an old German word for ‘reward’. How true…. Specification: Engine 1.5-litre 131 BHP SE: MPG 47.1, Speed 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Price £18,795. Warranty three years, 60,000 miles.

Garsons Farm TV PERSONALITY

TO LAUNCH SPRING FOOD FAIR

Flavour guru Pritesh Mody of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch fame will be bringing the `zing’ to the first spring food fair taking place at Garsons of Esher on the weekend of March 24 and 25. The upcoming TV personality and charismatic owner of World of Zing is the farm shop’s newest supplier and will be officially opening the food fair which promises to showcase gourmet goodies and Easter treats. Food lovers can enjoy tastings of quality food and drink and the chance to meet the makers who supply Garsons Farm Shop all year round. Tastings will include locally-made hot cross buns, seasonal cakes and chocolate. Among the many mouth-watering treats will be a selection of regional and continental cheeses from Leopard Dairy, vegan superfoods from Creative Nature, cakes from Crosbies, fresh sauces from the Taste Collectiv and Norman Hunt Cider. Dorset Spice Shed are back with their dish-enhancing range of seasonings and spices, and World of Zing will

make its debut with its chillies, herbs, spices, table sauces and range of ready-to-drink cocktails. Garsons will be kicking off the barbecue season early, so visitors can sample traditional pork sausages from Bevan’s Butchery, hot off the coals. And for those planning an Easter Sunday feast, the butchers will be taking orders for locally-reared freerange turkey and legs of Scottish lamb. “We thought there couldn’t be a better way to mark the start of spring than to have a food fair,” said Nigel Chandler, Farm Shop manager. “From our summer and Christmas food fairs, we know people love to meet the suppliers and artisan producers and chat about the food and drink they are tasting. It gives them the chance to try something new and provide lots of fresh ideas for home cooking.” The spring food fair is free to enter and will be open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday. We’ve had a busy winter! So much for the ‘off season’... Thank you Eagle Scouts from ACS who built a second shed for us (harder than it sounds - it was a pile of parts with no instructions!). We pruned all our fruit trees in one session thanks to some hardy volunteers turning out on a bitterly cold but beautifully sunny day, and on another cold day we planted about 20 new fruit trees to complete the orchard. We’re reopening for the new season on Thursday 1 March at 10am and our usual sessions will then be 10-12 and 2-4 each Thursday and Saturday. Come and see the results of the hard work and help kick off the 2018 season.
