From the EDITOR

Welcome to our May magazine! I hope you all enjoyed a lovely Easter break, although that seems like a while ago now, but at least we have two more Bank Holidays to look forward to this month. Let’s hope they are warm and sunny. As always, a busy, busy issue for you this month… Firstly, I’d like to say how lovely the new Avenue of Remembrance cherry trees look now that the work is virtually completed, don’t you agree? We are delighted to share coverage of this project from the past months, from start to finish. I’m looking forward to seeing the blossom soon (maybe by the time you read this, it will be out !). This restorative work will bring pleasure to so many for years to come, and of course, it is a wonderful mark of respect for the men and women it commemorates. We have another feature about a very talented sculptor who will be exhibiting his work at the Hampton Court Flower Show this year. Also, on another page, a competition to WIN tickets to the very same show! This is a really lovely day out, so why not give it a go? You know what they say... ‘ you’ve got to be in it to win it ‘ ! Who likes ducks? Please take a look at our little feature on page 38. We bring you a definitive guide to feeding fowl! We are so lucky to have the beautiful riverside area in Cobham, where there are often a selection of our feathered friends awaiting treats from their human admirers. Let’s keep it that way by helping to keep them healthy. Included are some great suggestions from the RSPB. It really is the season for fairs and fêtes. We have a fair few listed this month, so please do take note of the dates if you fancy attending. The sense of community is great locally and these events typify what living here is all about. Friendly family fun. Enjoy. Wishing you all a great month. Until next time,

Ros

AVENUE OF

REMEMBRANCE CHERRY TREES IN COBHAM

The original cherry trees in their heyday

A community initiative to restore the Avenue of Remembrance cherry trees in Cobham was launched by Elmbridge Borough Council and local organisations in September 2017. The Avenue of Remembrance with its 44 trees was originally dedicated on 24th April 1946 by Cobham Village WI in association with St Andrew’s Church to commemorate those local servicemen and women who lost their lives in WW2. Each tree represented one casualty and originally each had an individual plaque. Following the loss of these plaques over time, a new memorial stone, listing the names of the fallen, was erected in conjunction with Cobham’s Evening WI, Royal British Legion Cobham

branch and St Andrew’s Church, Cobham. It was dedicated on 26th April 2009. Since then, some of the trees had become diseased, and following the public consultation mentioned above, work to replace the original trees (and a few earlier replacements that had not thrived) began in January this year. All trees were removed, the ground was prepared for planting and the new trees were planted in February. The ceremony to re-dedicate the Cobham Avenue of Remembrance was scheduled for April in time for those attending to see the trees coming into blossom. This took place in Tilt Road, Cobham on an overcast and damp spring day on Sunday April 8th. Unfortunately, due to the cold spring this year, the blossom was not

visible on the day, but it will soon show itself for all to enjoy. What a fitting memorial and beautiful space this area will be for residents and visitors alike to enjoy for years to come. This project is a fantastic testament to the dedication and commitment of local organisations to look after and nurture their environment, in partnership with the Borough Council. The organisations involved in this initiative are Cobham Cedar Club Women’s Institute, Royal British Legion Cobham Branch, Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust, Cobham and Downside Residents’ Association, Stoke d’Abernon Residents’ Association and St Andrew’s Church

Cobham, together with other churches in the area. Despite the rain, more than 120 Cobham residents attended the re-dedication of the Avenue of Remembrance. The Avenue of Remembrance is an important memorial to those who lost their lives during WWII and lived in and around Cobham. We have enjoyed following this project over the past few months and we are delighted to share with you here our coverage through the various stages from start to finish. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Green Spaces Team on 01372 474 568 or email greenspaces@elmbridge.gov.uk

EARTH, AIR

FIRE & WIND SCULPTOR PAUL RICHARDSON

Sculptor Paul Richardson originally studied graphics near his home in Essex and went on to take a degree in painting in Birmingham. It was after college though that Paul discovered metal. He took a studio in the disused Birds Custard factory where he found steel sheets, bought a little welder and started to build. A passion for steel has characterised his sculptures ever since. Paul has created a significant body of public art for which he was nominated Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Commerce and Industry. Commissions are always site-specific and Paul won a commission for the centre

of Waterford, home of Hasbro’s Monopoly factory, to construct a huge corner of a Monopoly board, complete with rolling dice and a five metre long battleship. The natural world has become an important influence, culminating in recent works for the landscape and the garden. They draw on the exquisite patterns of nature, the balance of symmetry and asymmetry, chaos and order. Like many of his sculptures, ‘Flora’ holds contradictions. It seems to capture a fleeting moment between beauty and decay, yet is built of solid steel. On the other hand, just as ‘falling leaves return to the root’, the steel itself,

left untreated, would rust and return to the earth. To hold back decay, the sculptures are protected from air and water with a layer of zinc. Unlike steel, once the zinc is exposed to air and moisture outdoors, only the outer layer is given up and it forms a delicate, chalky grey patina. Examples of Paul’s work can be seen locally, a horse opposite Sandown Racecourse, and Flora at the Hannah Peschar Garden in Ockley, rather beautifully suspended from one of their lovely old trees. Throughout this series for the landscape and garden, Paul has found himself returning to the four elements.

Pieces like Flora and the Leaf Sphere with their open floating look have a natural connection with air. Another in the series, ‘Fallen Leaf ’, relates to the earth, a leaf skeleton, edges exquisitely frayed, returning to the soil. His most recent piece, a fire basket, is a latticework cradle of vegetal shapes. Once alight, these shapes come to life as silhouettes against flames inside. So it is perhaps no surprise that Paul is currently developing a water feature, working with the play of light on water trickling over stainless steel leaves which will be seen for the first time ever at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 3rd July – 8th July 2018

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

LAWNMOWER GARDENING MATTERS Cecelia John: 01372 200 000

|

Hurrah, it’s May and mowing the lawn is back on the agenda. Everyone has a different view of what type of lawn they would like, and so choosing the right kind of lawnmower for your garden can be a difficult decision. Here goes with my attempt to help you find the right mower to keep your grass looking gorgeous all year. There are several types of lawnmower for you to consider: Cylinder lawnmowers use a series of blades at the front of the mower which rotate against a fixed bottom blade. This makes them perfect for level lawns and really fine, short cuts, such as those envy-inducing lawns in ornamental gardens. They’re available as electric, petrol-powered and hand-pushed models and come with a variety of cutting widths. However, if you use a cylinder mower, your lawn will need more regular mowing to keep it looking great. Rotary lawnmowers are the most versatile type of mower because they’re able to cope with different types of lawn, such as rougher areas of grass and sloping banks. Their blades rotate horizontally at your chosen cutting height and they’re available as either electric or petrol-powered models. They’re the best choice for keeping a normal family garden perfectly trimmed and they’re able to deal with longer grass if you don’t cut the lawn on a regular basis. However, if it is a petrol-powered one, you do need to be able to start it….fine if it starts by means of a key, less so maybe if it has a pull start: I have never got the hang of that, probably because I’m on the short side.

24 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

Make sure you can indeed start it before you buy one. It’s no fun standing outside for hours on end, pulling the cord upwards but with zippety doodah happening. Hover lawnmowers. As the name suggests, this type of mower hovers just above the grass. These are rotary mowers which float on a cushion of air; they can be extremely lightweight to push and their easy manoeuvrability makes them ideal if your garden has curved edges, borders or flower beds. However, they may not be terribly robust if your garden has a lot of rough or bumpy areas. Cordless lawnmowers can be petrol-powered or batterypowered mowers and they are growing in popularity, due to the performance improvements and lower costs of lithium ion batteries. Petrol mowers offer the power and range benefits of an engine, and, with the additional power available, they can also be self-propelled which makes it much easier to push them on large lawns. Electric mowers are extremely efficient, especially the larger models, but there’s always the hazard of the power cord, and so a circuit breaker is an advisable extra purchase, so that when (note ‘when’ and not ‘if ’) you mow over the cord, you are not fried to a crisp in your own garden. Final thought: a rotary or hover mower will do the job in most gardens. Adjust the frequency and height of cut with the seasons, but resist the temptation to cut too close. Have fun!

MAY Book Reviews ‘‘The Lie of the Land’ by Amanda Craig (paperback £8.99) Lottie and Quentin’s marriage is on the rocks and so are their livelihoods. Lottie decides they should rent out their lovely London home and decamp to Devon for a financial regroup. Their children – Lottie’s mixed race son Xan from a youthful brief encounter and two young daughters from the marriage – are not happy. Quentin is appalled at the move but, as the guilty party, he has lost his moral authority. Living in an unheated ramshackle house in the West Country comes as a shock to them all – the fact that it was the site of a gruesome murder doesn’t help. An enjoyable undemanding read that also raises some interesting aspects of human behaviour and how events force us to evolve.

‘The Smiling Man’ by Joseph Knox (hardback £12.99) Aidan Waits is a detective condemned to the night shift with a partner he detests – the feeling is mutual. Disgrace and scandal have halted his career. He hangs onto his job by his fingertips, while his partner Sutty glories in the misery of the poor souls they encounter in the dark hours and dark places of the restless city (Manchester). Joseph Knox introduced Waits in his first novel ‘Sirens’ (available in paperback, 8.99) but this one is even better. A clever, original and engrossing read.

‘Don’t Skip Out on Me’ by Willy Vlautin (hardback £14.99) Horace Hopper, a 21 year old ranch hand born half Native American and half Irish, is desperately trying to escape his own stifling sense of failure. He works on a ranch owned by Mr and Mr Reese who love and trust him, but Horace needs to prove himself worthy of their trust and becomes Hector Hidalgo, a Mexican championship boxer. Only Hector is not Mexican, can’t speak Spanish and hates Mexican food. His loneliness cripples him and serves only to accentuate his feelings of unworthiness. This is a brutal yet surprisingly tender story which is one of Willy Vlautin’s best.

TO FEED OR NOT TO FEED WILD DUCKS

We were contacted recently by a local resident after he had seen people feeding the ducks at a local pond. He had read an article in the paper about the dangers of feeding the wrong things to ducks and our other feathered friends. Feeding ducks, geese, swans and other waterfowl is a topic of great debate among birders, conservationists and city officials. So we looked to the RSPB for some sound advice. It may come as a surprise that ducks like tinned, frozen and fresh corn, as well as flapjacks, rolled oats and even instant porridge. According to the RSPB, these are six things that people should feed to ducks.: 1. Corn 2. Lettuce 3. Peas 4. Oats 5. Rice 6. Seeds RSPB spokesman Harry Bellew said: “Feeding the ducks on the park pond – or geese and swans on rivers – is often the first experience children have with wildlife and is a family favourite activity. But it is important that we’re feeding ducks the right kind of food to help keep them happy and healthy, whilst ensuring our waterways are kept in a good condition. Try to vary what you give them and swap it for healthier more natural treats, such as oats, corn or defrosted frozen peas.” Six things you should NEVER feed ducks: 1. Bread

38 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

2. Chips 3. Crackers 4. Cereal 5. Sweets 6. Mouldy food Bread, chips, crackers, cereal and sweets have little nutritional value, while mouldy food can be very harmful to ducks’ health. Mr Bellew said: “There is a risk that ducks and other waterfowl will get an illness called angel wing, caused by not getting the right nutrients in their diet. It causes a deformity in birds’ wings that can hamper the way they fly or even stop them flying altogether, which could obviously be fatal. Uneaten, rotting food left by ducks can trigger noxious odours and fuel algae that can eventually eradicate fish from the area, as well as attracting rats, mice and insects. Mouldy bread can also cause aspergillosis, a fatal lung infection that can wipe out waterfowl in flocks.” The RSPB warns that ducks may fill up on tasty white bread which has no real nutritional value, instead of eating more healthy types of food. “It’s a bit like if we eat too much bread or similar food: we feel fine to start with but soon we feel bloated and sluggish. That can be detrimental for birds, as they will fill up on that, rather than on other more nutritional foods.” Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have certainly learnt something from this and hope we can all enjoy feeding the birds more safely in future.

RHS HAMPTON COURT PALACE

FLOWER SHOW 2018 HIGHLIGHTS

From 2nd to 8th July, The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) largest flower festival will return to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will be celebrating iconic figures of the horticultural world, welcoming influential Dutch designer/nurseryman Piet Oudolf. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a purple meadow of Verbena bonariensis. Thousands of these delicate flowers will create a dazzling display of lilac, lavender and violet shades sweeping along the Long Water, so that visitors can wander through and enjoy this elegant summer flower. The show will explore the evolution of plants on earth. ‘Evolve: Through the Roots of Time’ will guide visitors through barren landscapes prior to the Cambrian era over 500 million years ago, to the lush tropical jungles of the Jurassic period and into the present day, where visitors will walk through a meadow of flowering plants which first appeared during the Cretaceous time. Floral

...coming soon GDPR - GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION

01372 370300

sales@tecres.co.uk

www.tecres.co.uk

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer from Tecres in Leatherhead which has been providing computer solutions since 1989. On 25th May 2018, every business in the UK (and Europe) will have to comply with the new GDPR legislation. That is every business, there is no hiding place. Not knowing is not an excuse. If you as a business hold personal information about another person, you must comply with GDRP, failure to do so could result in a fine of up to 3% of global turnover or up to 20 million Euros. GDPR legislation replaced our aged Data Protection Act of 1998 and 1995, so this really brings us up to date and offers protection for the future. It is easy to think GDPR doesn’t affect you because you are a window cleaner or a taxi driver, but this may not be the case. In short, if you keep any data which could identify a person, you will need to comply to GDPR. This could be a payroll record or an enquiring potential customer. If you use a mailing list of prospects or customers, in order to comply with GDPR, you have to seek positive confirmation from the person whose information you hold, stating that they have granted you permission to have their email address for the intended use, such as the sending of product updates. You are expected to protect the data people have provided you with. If your computer uses an out-ofdate operating system which no longer has any security updates available, such as Windows XP which retired in 2014, you are in breach of GDPR, since you will have failed to take reasonable care of the data. Or if you do not have any regularly updated internet security, you

44 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

are in breach, since you will not have taken sufficient care of users’ data. If you are aware that your company has fallen victim to a data breach, you must inform the owners of the data within 72 hours of the breach. As a consumer, you have the right to ask any Europeanbased company holding your data to reveal what information they hold about you, and they must respond to this request within a month. Also, you can request to have your data amended or deleted, and they must comply within a month. This is far from a complete breakdown of what GDPR means, but if you have any presence in the digital world, this is something you need to know more about. To help, we have detailed below the dates of when some popular operation systems are due to stop support:

C.T. SULLIVAN

Last month, a story hit the national headlines, regarding the right to defend oneself and one’s home, should an armed burglar break in. On this particular occasion, the home belonged to two pensioners who were asleep in their bed. What followed led to a pretty horrific outcome and must have been terrifying for the elderly couple. It resulted in the arrest of the home owner/ elderly male pensioner who was held by the police on suspicion of murder. Obviously, this is a very controversial area of law and there are very differing views on how the homeowner should be regarded

46 To advertise please email ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

in law, given this situation. I believe on this occasion, the homeowner has been told by police that he will not be charged with any offence. Now, I do not profess to have the answers but these headlines brought to mind a very good novel I read a little while ago about just such a situation: ‘Reasonable Force’, written by local author, C T Sullivan. It’s a very good read and, given the recent incident, I thought some of you might find it interesting to see how the plot unfolds. It’s certainly a thought-provoking read! ‘Reasonable Force’ is available from Amazon for £10.99 - boasting a five star rating on the site *****

AUDI A8

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

A blessing of my job is the frequency of invitations for enjoyable luxury lifestyle outings and exclusive insights into experiences otherwise out of reach, reserved only as hopes and dreams beyond reality, or as the right of the privileged ranks of the rich and famous. And here I cite with the fondest of memories my good fortune to have flown in Concorde from Paris to New York; a sailing to the USA aboard the Queen Mary 2, with a night spent at the captain’s table and a glittering host of celebs; a Virgin flight first-class to Australia with a Hong Kong five-star stopover; countless private jet trips with the late pools millionaire Robert Sangster and one-to-one lunches with mega film stars Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and world F1 champ Nigel Mansell; holidays with football legends George Best and Bobby Charlton, and an extended tour with The Beatles. There are too many more to mention. I shall stop it there to take up the very latest treat, an outing in what has been rightly voted the world’s luxury car, the wow of an Audi A8, a limo of poshness personified. And deservedly so, if my comfort-zone transport to the ultra-sophisticated Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, majestic centrepiece of quaint Bellagio on the shoreline of stunning Lake Como, one of Italy’s real treasures, is anything to go by. This is the ninth time in 14 years that Audi has been honoured with a World Car prize, and honestly, having

50 Looklocal Magazine - May 2018

savoured its style, revelled in its sumptuous legroom, sprawled in its leatherwork and appreciated its driver aids with gadgets galore, I am in 100 per cent support of its latest voted status on the globe’s luxury class list over some very worthy rivals at the New York Auto Show in March. Audi justifiably hail the A8 as their flagship saloon, as soothing an example as is possible of what a luxury model should be, and with so many driver assistance aids - 40 plus - and inbuilt safety devices and easy-to-read driver-help dials info so painstakingly assembled. And I viewed it all from the cossetted comfort of the vast back seat spread of exclusive club lounge comfort and quality, as my chauffeur made the most of the 4.0-litre engine that offered easy work on the 50-odd mile journey from Milan’s Linate Airport to the Serbelloni Hotel at the other end of a free-flowing motorway and then a twisty finale along the lakeside’s narrow lanes. It is a glider of a clever car with aplomb, grace, style and value for money, and it gave me and Trophy Wife an arrival presence at the Serbelloni that was noticed and commented upon favourably by an American couple as they strolled off to their Rolls Royce.... Specification: Audi V8. 3.0TFSI 335bhp Quattro. Fuel : Petrol. Speed 155mph. 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. MPG 37.7. Warranty: three years/60,000 miles. Price £71,000

BOOKHAM

OPEN GARDENS SUNDAY 17TH JUNE 2018

Do come and join in this annual event, where over 700 people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way. In this our 13th year, we are featuring at least 10 varied and attractive private gardens, 9 of which you won’t have seen last year. In addition, Gracewell Care Home will open their gardens for the first time and we welcome back Manor House School, The Grange Centre with its Victorian walled garden and Little Bookham Allotments. The gardens come in all shapes and sizes, from the formal to more laid-back planting, maybe with some quirky features, and of course, fruit and vegetables in abundance at the Grange and the Allotments. This year’s Village Day theme – ‘Birds, Bees, Bugs and Butterflies’ – is applicable to us too, for all our gardens are a haven for them. Some of our gardeners go further and choose their planting specifically to be ‘perfect for pollinators’ and also to provide seed heads and berries for the birds. In addition, you will see ponds and habitats designed to attract wildlife and provide them with shelter. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid-May from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of

RHS GARDEN WISLEY

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Wisley will host a spring shopping extravaganza with the return of the Spring Craft Fair from 3-7 May 2018. Within the beautiful surroundings of the garden, the annual contemporary Craft Fair will see 200 of the UK’s finest designer-makers showcase their quality wares. Visitors will be able to browse and buy from a wide selection of unique crafts, including art, furniture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, glassware, fashion and sculpture. For the first time, alongside the 200 exhibiting artisans, the Spring Craft Fair will feature 30 demonstrating artists, with visitors able to view skilled craftspeople at work as they create handmade items. The Fair will also have a Food Village, offering visitors the chance to try and buy tasty products, such as cheese and chocolate. Additionally, shoppers will be treated to live music as they stroll around the Fair and take in the

seasonal horticultural highlights in the garden. Belinda Betts, Head of Site at RHS Garden Wisley, said: “The Spring Craft Fair is one of the most popular events at Wisley. It provides our visitors with the chance to select from a unique collection of products that have been made by some of the finest craftspeople in the UK - all in one place! Exciting new additions for 2018 include the Food Village and the demonstrating area for artists, providing the opportunity for visitors to see just how these unique items are created.” The Spring Craft Fair at RHS Garden Wisley coincides with National Gardening Week (30 April-6 May 2018) where visitors to the garden will be able to listen to informative talks in the Wisley Plant Centre. Entry into the Spring Craft Fair is free to RHS Members. Normal garden admission applies to nonmembers. For further information, visit www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley

SUPPORTING

CLIENTS IN RECOVERY

FROM MENTAL ILL HEALTH

AMIGO matches trained volunteers with people who require support to move forward on their journey of recovery from mental ill-health whilst becoming independent from mental health services. The service is available across Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, West Elmbridge and Woking. The project is funded by Catalyst’s Welcome Project and is being delivered by Voluntary Support North Surrey who promote voluntary and community work by supporting local charities.
