Welcome to Look Local in October, the month when leaves change colour, the clocks are turned back & the evenings draw in. Pumpkins and conkers appear and I get one year older :-( but not necessarily in that order! Although the days will soon feel a little shorter, as always there is plenty going on locally to make the most of every minute! Why not visit West Horsley Place on 6th, 7th or 8th October? The grounds form the perfect setting for this Food Festival weekend. It should be a fun day out for all the family. There will be a line-up of top chefs and demonstrators, including Billy & Jack, Masterchef finalist, Jack Sturgess from Bake with Jack, Rob Kennedy, Stephane Reyaud and The Allergy Mums. See inside for more details. I hope you enjoy our coverage of the ever-popular Cobham Heritage Day which took place on Saturday 9th September. It was a lovely day and a good time was had by all, as far as I could tell! Did you know that there is a wonderful home-visit vet service available for Cobham pet owners? I enjoyed a day on the road with the Surrey Home Vet, Clare Neuhoff. I enjoyed it so much that I’ve decided to come back as a vet in my next life! If you fancy a treat, we recommend a lovely local restaurant, the Toby Cottage in nearby Ripley, where I enjoyed a wonderful evening. I’m delighted to share that evening with you this month. There is lots more to read within our pages this month: an award for a lovely local company, winter health advice from the NHS, a little music quiz kindly provided by David Kid Jensen and all our regular features too, and if you’re a bit of a motorhead, why not enter our competition to win a lovely book all about Volvos, see page 46 for that. I hope you all have a great month, and remember to adjust your clocks and watches on Sunday 29th October.

Until next time, take care,

Ros

ASK BRUCE NEW TRICKS

This month, Look Local editor Ros asks ‘can you teach an old dog new tricks?’ Ros has seen videos of dogs learning tricks and would like to try the same with her four-year-old cockerpoo who seems slow to perform! There is the possibility for any dog to learn new tricks, whatever its age or breed. For some, it comes naturally, while others may struggle. For example, pugs and beagles can be strong-willed and uninterested, whereas dogs like collies, spaniels and labradors are often super-keen. A cockerpoo as a breed has good potential, combining the intelligence of the poodle with the work ethic of the spaniel. But patience and persistence from you is needed. Unlike puppies, older dogs will need more time, repetition and reward. What takes a puppy two days to learn could take an older dog two weeks. Start slowly and motivate them with their favourite treat or toy each time they get it right. If, over time, you aren’t getting anywhere, it may be you have a dog that’s simply not interested and it’s time to call it a day. Like a child that tries a new hobby and gives up, it would be unwise to push them too hard to continue. And do remember that very elderly dogs (aged 10-plus) are at a time in their life where learning new tricks might not be appropriate. Overall, it’s about setting realistic expectations. Good luck! Looklocal Magazine - October 2017 17

I recently spent a great day out on the road with the Surrey Home Vet, Claire Neuhoff. Claire and her husband Simon own & run two veterinary practices locally. While Simon and two other vets, Sarah and Retief, look after the surgeries, Claire provides a wonderful home visit service for clients who prefer their animals to be seen by a vet in the comfort of their own surroundings. Most of the time, Claire can treat the animals there and then, but if a situation should arise which needs more involved treatment, scans or even surgery, then Claire has the back up of the practice facilities which enable her to offer total cover for her patients. We made a whole selection of house visits during the day, and the animals and the owners were all happy to see Claire. She is very friendly and great with the animals. This was confirmed on our first visit by the greeting she received from two lovely poodles called Chloe and Danny. Claire visits them every few weeks as their owner is an elderly lady and it is quite difficult for her to get out and about with both dogs. Claire checks them over and cleans the older poodle’s ears and eyes. It was very apparent that both dogs enjoy these regular visits, and Danny, the younger dog, was very keen to receive his treat once Chloe

18 Looklocal Magazine - October 2017

had been seen by Claire! Both dogs were in pretty good shape. Claire weighed them and recorded the details on her laptop. It was time to move on to our second call… Next, we visited Stan, a new client! He was a stunning 3 month old, totally black, German Shepherd puppy. What a lovely dog! Stan was given an all-over puppy check; Claire listened to his heart and gave him a thorough examination. She was happy to report that Stan is in great condition and she was able to advise about vaccines & various other treatments for fleas, worms, ticks & lungworm. Stan is a healthy young dog and his owners, having owned German Shepherds before, were well-informed and prepared for this lovely new member of their family. We left Stan and headed to the Epsom surgery, where a sweet old Jack Russell called Maxi needed a heart scan. He was a little nervous, but in the caring hands of the veterinary nurses & Claire, he coped very well. Claire took a whole variety of measurements with the ultrasound machine, which is basically the same equipment that is used on humans. Not all vets offer this service, as it requires extra training, but Claire is able to administer the test and read the results. Maxi was a star and Claire recorded her findings which would be relayed to Maxi’s

owner. In another room, Retief was working with a nurse on another dog called Buddy. Buddy was having some fairly extensive dental work done. Again, just like we humans, dental X-rays are taken to see the extent of any damaged teeth. Poor Buddy had to have a few teeth removed, and he also received a big clean up. I was assured that he would soon be feeling a whole lot better! By now it was midday and we went off to do another house call, this time to see a sweet little black cat called

of their family for many years and it was very sad. But this poor little cat was not at all well and it was the kindest thing to do. Claire examined Sid and asked the owner very gently what she would like to do. The lady knew it was the right time to say good-bye to her beloved pet and she asked if they could sit in the garden because Sid had always loved it out there. Of course, this was totally fine and it was actually a very gentle and peaceful parting. Claire allowed them time to say good-bye before giving Sid a sedative which simply sent him gently to sleep. A

Poppet. Poor Poppet is quite elderly and has a number of medical problems. Claire needed to take some blood to send off for testing. Cats can be tricky when it comes to such procedures, so Claire had taken along one of her nurses to assist. It all went smoothly and Poppet was actually very obliging and happy to soon be hiding under a chair, having a wash. Her bloods were taken back to the surgery for analysis of her thyroid levels. Poppet’s owner was very grateful and we left them to return to the surgery. When we arrived, a pug who had eaten some bubble gum was being seen. He was given some medication to make him sick - bubble gum is very bad for dogs! This worked well and he was then allowed to go home. We enjoyed a quick sandwich and a cup of tea. I chatted to the other staff members who were all lovely and obviously really enjoyed working with Claire and the other vets. Paperwork and computer updates were being completed and there was a lovely atmosphere behind the scenes in the practice. The last call of the day was a sad one. A very much-loved and elderly cat called Sid had to be put to sleep. Claire chatted to the owners; Sid and his brother had been part

further euthanasia medication was then given. Although very sad, it was the most peaceful end you could wish for and the owner was very grateful. So much so that she even took the time to write this on Claire’s work Facebook page a few hours later… ‘We had to have our beautiful cat, aged 19, put to sleep yesterday which was an incredibly sad and difficult decision for us. Claire visited our home and I couldn’t have asked for a kinder and more patient vet. Sid went to sleep in our garden in as gentle a way as I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I would highly recommend Claire to anyone and will be using her as our vet from now on. My thanks to Claire and her assistant.’ A poignant end to a lovely day. Surrey Home Vet offers a fabulous caring service for your pets and it is not expensive for Claire to visit you at home. Her fees are competitively priced, with only a small surcharge to be seen at your home. This is a great help if you are elderly and/or disabled but it is also a lovely service for any pet. I know my own animals would be far happier to be seen in their own home than at a surgery, given the choice. Having seen Claire in action, I would highly recommend Surrey Home Vet.

The Toby Cottage Restaurant in Ripley has been a favourite on our list for many years. Owned and run by Toni & Tony, business partners for 11 years and colleagues for many more, the combination works so well. Without exception, every time I’ve visited the welcome is warm. This traditional restaurant sits within a lovely 16th century oak beamed building at the end of Ripley High Street, with customer parking to the rear. We started our evening with a much-enjoyed aperitif in the upstairs bar, a chance to relax and defuse the stresses of the day, while we sipped on a welcome G&T, nibbled on an olive and feasted our eyes on the tempting menu selections. The menu changes regularly, and specials vary, depending on what looks good at market: regular twice weekly visits to Billingsgate and Smithfield markets in London ensure fresh seasonal produce, and this

certainly is reflected in the quality and flavours you will enjoy at The Toby Cottage. After much deliberation, I decided to go fishy. Both my choices this evening were specials: scallops in pancetta, followed by the halibut in a lobster and prawn sauce on a bed of leeks. My dinner guest chose crispy calamari, and Beef Wellington to follow. We were shown to our table downstairs. It was beautifully presented and situated by an attractive bay window. The wine menu is pretty impressive, offering a wide selection to please every palate. As our food options led us in different directions, we opted for two different half bottles, one Loire Sancerre, which was fruity but beautifully dry & a perfect accompaniment to my fish dishes, and a mellow Pinot Noir Burgundy to wash down the beef. Both were enjoyed very much. The staff have the art of service down to a tee, attentive

but not invasive, professional but friendly, with perfect silver service skills to boot. Our starters arrived and the smells instantly made my mouth water. Beautifully presented and deliciously tasty, my scallops melted in my mouth. The calamari was coated in a very light and crispy batter, and the calamari itself was soft and very moreish., and accompanied by a very tasty dipping sauce. We actually shared these delicious offerings and both enjoyed them very much indeed. Our main courses were equally as enjoyable. The individual Beef Wellington sliced so easily and my halibut was complemented beautifully by the lobster and prawn sauce. A selection of fresh seasonal vegetables and crispy roasted potatoes were cooked to perfection. Such a treat ! The sweet trolley that followed proved impossible to resist. Again a magnificent selection. We chose a creme

caramel & profiteroles with chocolate sauce. All the desserts are homemade and you could really tell. We had such a nice evening, it was a real treat. This is a special restaurant, where customers are very well looked after, great care is taken and the food is superb. You come away feeling as if you’ve spent an evening with friends. This attention to detail and good old-fashioned service is rare these days. Tony & Toni create a perfect recipe at The Toby Cottage. Thanks go to everyone who made us feel so welcome. We highly recommend a visit, booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. For more information see their advert on the next page.

Fight the Flu AND STAY WELL THIS WINTER

To find out more visit www.nhs.uk/flujab or speak to your GP surgery or local pharmacist

The onset of the winter months is always challenging for the NHS, especially for urgent care services which tend to see a sharp increase in A&E attendances. This is often because of flu and other cold weather conditions, but also because of preventable things, such as people running out of medications or opting to go straight to hospital instead of to a GP, a pharmacist or calling NHS 111. The Stay Well This Winter campaign aims to ease this seasonal pressure by outlining simple choices people can make to keep themselves well during the colder months. This includes having a flu vaccination, if you are eligible. Vaccination is free to those aged two – eight years, over 65s, anyone aged six months - 65 years in clinical ‘at risk’ groups (including people with asthma and respiratory conditions and those with heart and kidney problems), pregnant women, those in longstay residential care homes and carers. Choosing to get vaccinated not only helps you stay well, but also those around you. Flu is highly infectious and can be particularly nasty in small children and the elderly, leading to serious

complications, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Now is the perfect time to make your appointment with your GP or pharmacist before outbreaks of flu set in... and don’t assume that if you were vaccinated last year, you are safe - the vaccination needs updating every year to be fully effective.

Flu Facts • Young children are not vaccinated by injection. They receive a quick, painless nasal spray which takes seconds to administer • Flu in children can lead to high fever or complications and may require hospital treatment • Babies can’t be vaccinated but if the mother is vaccinated when pregnant, immunity is passed to her child during its first few months • Flu can hit older and disabled people and their carers hard. Having the vaccine is the best way to protect carers and the person they care for from flu. • Contrary to popular belief, the flu vaccination does not give you flu!

OCTOBER BOOK REVIEWS

Year of the Drought by Roland Buti (Paperback £12.00) This is the first novel by Swiss author Roland Buti to be translated into English. Gus is 13 years old, and his family, the Sutters, have been farming on the Swiss plateau for generations, but in the summer of 1976, Gus helplessly observes his family and carefree childhood dissolve in the heat. Year of the Drought is a perfect companion to Robert Seethaler’s A Whole Life. A wonderfully evocative book about a lost, rural way of life.

News of the World by Paulette Jiles (Paperback £8.99) Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd is content making his living as a news reader travelling around Texas until he is charged with a much more difficult mission, returning a ten year old white girl, kidnapped by Kiowa Indians four years earlier. He agrees, although he finds her ‘artificial and malign’. News of the World is a most exquisite book about the joys of freedom, the pure adventure in the wilds of Texas and the unexpected proprietary love between two people. I read it in one night and wished it had never ended.

This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay (Hardback £16.99) This book is both hilarious and heartbreaking. A timely plunge into the messy and courageous world of a doctor on the front lines of the NHS, Kay drags us through his chaotic days and nights. The dangerous demands of 97 hour working weeks, the power and pressure of saving lives, and the valiant attempt to have a life outside the hospital are laid bare. Kay tackles the popular myths about the lives of doctors, while revealing the truth of their daily lives and careers, the unpredictable patients and emergencies, and the endless stream of bodily fluids. Don’t read it while you’re eating, but do read it.

For some while, custom-built PCs have been the preferred platform for modern game play, and this is justifiably deserved for many reasons, including: • You can choose, change and improve the specification of the machine • Superior graphics on a PC • Easier and cheaper to keep up-to-date with your needs • PC games are usually cheaper than the console equivalent • The users can be networked and multi play with larger number of players • There is a larger catalogue of games on PC than all other formats If you are looking to get yourself a gaming system, the most important consideration is to ensure your system is harmonised. This means ensure that all the components in your system are of a similar performance rating and that one part is not stifling the performance of another. As a very rough guide, building a balanced machine could look like this….

Highest performance

Lower performance

PROCESSOR

HARD DRIVE

GRAPHICS CARDS

RAM

AMD Threadripper

M.2 SSD

NVidia 1080 T1

Kingston Hyper-X Predator

Intel Core i9

M.2 SSD

NVidia 1080

Kingston Hyper-X Predator

AMD Ryzen 7

M.2 SSD

NVidia 1070 8Gb

Kingston Hyper-X Savage

Intel Core i7

SATA SSD

NVidia 1060 6Gb

Kingston Hyper-X Savage

AMD Ryzen 5

SATA SSD

NVidia 1060 3Gb

Kingston Hyper-X Impact

Intel Core i5

SATA Hybrid Drive

NVidia 1050 T1

Kingston Hyper-X Fury

Other items which we have not touched on, but which are of major importance, are: which motherboard?, effective cooling, and why do I need a good power supply? The higher the performance you are seeking, the more the items will cost (maybe a bit obvious); for your greater outlay, you are buying improved longevity, superior graphics and more fluid motion, plus the higher performing machines will work much better with immerging technologies, such as virtual reality and other innovations, such as a augmented reality. Surprisingly, there are sites such as www.twitch.tv where you can watch game players play your favourite game - yes, and there are millions of people doing this - and in most cases, the PC is the preferred platform. If budgets are limited, we can advise you on how they build your machine in stages, whilst still having a useable machine as you complete your ultimate machine. We are now taking orders for your Christmas custom-built gaming machine; we can build to your requirements, or advise, recommend, then build the ultimate machine for you in time for Christmas.

Whatever your needs, please feel free to come along and talk with us.

Competition TIME

Win a copy of ‘The Volvo Estate Car’ with Ted Macauley

Few, if any, books featuring the history and development of motor cars, particularly one significant model, can match the absolutely splendid offering by specialist publishers Veloce with their painstaking trace of Volvo’s trend-setter estate car to the Scandinavian maker’s current worldbeaters. Every one of the 160 pages is an absolute treat, an historic and carefully constructed and informative verbal run, with a gallery of photographs, images and impressions to pore over at your leisure in a stylish hardback entitled ‘The Volvo Estate Car’. It is a very fine tribute indeed to author Ashley Hollebone’s dedicated hard work. His life revolves around motor cars, as is obvious by his clear enthusiasm. He is not only an obvious petrol head writer, but has amassed 20 years in the film industry as a movie co-ordinator, setting up action vehicles and teaching star actors how to drive

46 Looklocal Magazine - October 2017

strange, complicated and difficult cars. Any classic car enthusiast, let alone the singularly devoted Volvo fans, will revel in what I confidently predict will go down as a collectors’ item: a superbly produced book, a suitable, step-by-step historic record of an iconic mode of transport currently hitting the highest spots in the tough 4X4 market from a pedigree of expertise and popularity. It is twenty quidsworth of sheer satisfaction and I enjoyed every turn of page and revelled in the information service it so expertly provides. So will you. And that’s why I am offering it as a prize. You can win this sturdy hardback by answering the question: What year did

Volvo top the half-amillion sales mark for the first time in its 89 year history?

Send your answer to ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk by the 13/10/17 for your chance to win.

Volvo XC90 CAR REVIEW

By Ted Macauley

and, with their dedication to detail and recognisable improvement in the tiniest of equipment, even the Volvo radiator badge has been redesigned. And it gets better and better. Volvo’s relentless chase for the wow factor results in an infotainment set-up that takes a commanding but understated placing of a tablet acting as the centrepiece of the dash. The tech-pack graphics are clarity exemplified, with sharp resolution and the operation of the system with an ease of pinch, pat or swipe of its informative and thoroughly responsive screen. Overall, as a perfect appeal to families, the emphasis is comfort, with the seven seats all recliners and sliders to suit any leg length. Even six-footers like me are made to feel right at home, and the 3rd row back seats can be folded away to expand what is already a boot expansive enough to swallow up any amount of family luggage. So what about the ride? The turbo and supercharged petrol version offers a responsive treat from its four cylinders, but for me if you are not too fussed about the lack of a reasonable roar as per the multi-cylinder offering, then the diesel XC90 serves an admirable response in its smoothly-reacting, bump-absorbing family orientation. The more miles you do, on the motorway, in town or down twisty country lanes, the more you appreciate what a real beauty and an economic, family-oriented reward this understated Swedish good looker is as it sets about monopolising the SUV hard-fought market as the bestseller. Any worthy Volvo dealer, acting on guidance from HQ, will give you an extended trial spell which could be as much as a week. They know it’s a delight that inevitably will magic you towards your cheque book. Volvo XC? That, in my humble opinion, should read eXCellent …..

I could well be fairly accused of allowing myself to be overtaken by a burst of Volvo magic with my double-dose of Swedish expertise in the shape of the new SUV under review – and, elsewhere in our magazine, a chance to win a fascinating book on the history of the company’s buildup, featuring its estate car and its successors. But here and now, I must pay tribute to probably the most comfy, practical and value-for-money car they have produced in years – the ultra-ultra stylish XC90, a treasure of good looks on the move. I forecast that it is as gob-smacking as any Scandinavian beauty can be and I’m dead certain it will severely dent the hopes and plans of SUV rivals such as Jaguar, Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz and leave them stranded in its healthy and fumeless slipstream. As always, with a typical lack of preposterous show-offery demonstrated yawningly too often by rivals, Volvo is letting its refined newcomer speak for itself, and it does so in impressive volumes without shouting its odds like its opponents do so blatantly. An astute, crucial and well-planned, but oh-so-simple principle remains. The engine is transversely mounted, with the result that an impressive share of its elongated extent is retained to give its interior, and its space for seven Specification: My choice: D5 Inscription. Diesel. Seven people, a real treat. The modern version is pretty much different in every seats. BHP 235.Speed 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds.Top department, with quality as its well-deserved watchword, speed around 130 mph. Mpg: 48.7. Price £47,350.

Gardening Matters OCTOBER TASKS

Cecelia John 01372 200 000 or ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

Oh. I see it’s October already. But only yesterday it was March...??? …Still, good news: there’s less to do in the garden than earlier in the year, so here goes. Start preparing new borders for next year. Dig them over to a few spades’ depths, removing all weed roots and adding coarse, old compost or fallen leaves. If creating a bed from lawn, lay the turf upside-down in the bottom of the bed, but not if it contains perennial weeds. And if you’re making new borders next year on clay soil, just dig over roughly now, adding old compost as you go. The frosts will break up the rough clumps for you. The nerines look fabulous at this time of year, like small, lipstick-pink agapanthus. Divide after flowering, putting them into hot, sunny, dry soil, with the bulb’s snout just under the surface. Some perennials, eg aconite and eremurus, poke through very early in spring, and now is not a bad time to divide them, but remember that eremurus have fragile starfish roots. Once blackened by frost, dahlias can be lifted, dried off and stored somewhere cool, dark, airy and frost-free. Top tip: storing them in dry sand stops them shrivelling. Tough varieties can be left in the ground and thoroughly mulched. It’s a good time to plant deciduous and evergreen hedges - in fact, all evergreens - but make sure you keep them watered for a couple of months, particularly in windy weather, until they can put out new roots. When moving

48 Looklocal Magazine - October 2017

evergreens after a dry season, throw several buckets of water on them a few days beforehand to ensure the rootball is moist. While the weather’s kind, finish clipping evergreen hedges and topiary to leave crisp winter lines. Using secateurs shorten to their base any shoots that are starting to run up the hedge. This helps keep it slimline and also prevents it splaying out in the long term. Look out for weak specimens in recentlyplanted beech, hornbeam, thorn, holly and privet hedges: cut weaker growth down to 20cm to help them shoot harder and fill out around the bottom. Clean and disinfect your greenhouse, standing the plants outside. In particular, clean the outside of the roof with a long, soft brush to maximise winter light levels inside. Remember to close down the greenhouse at night, but open it wide in the morning to prevent soaring temperatures and disease. And now’s the time to line it with bubble wrap to conserve the heat inside in winter, resisting the urge to pop the bubbles….. Finally, some random suggestions. As light levels fall on window sills, keep houseplants somewhat drier to slow down growth during the winter. Also, seek out bargains in end-of-season or discontinued-line pots: if you’re prepared to store them till next season, buy now. And finally, rake up fallen leaves or pay a small child to do it for you: they’ll know the going rate, trust me.

Register for an Open Morning here: http://www.acs-schools.com/open-mornings-acs-cobham

ACS Cobham International School today hosted a summer garden party to celebrate the opening of its brand new £15m boarding house. Guests included the Mayor of Elmbridge, the Chief Executive of the Boarding Schools’ Association and members of the school community, as well as past boarding students and staff. The new Woodlands house will provide an enhanced world-class school residency for an additional 113 boys and girls, with single en-suite rooms for all senior students. The celebration saw speeches from Tony Eysele (Head of School), with the Mayor of Elmbridge cutting the ribbon and officially opening the new boarding house ready for the upcoming school year. As part of an initiative launched by the Boarding Schools’ Association to create an international orchard across the UK, an olive tree was planted outside the new house. Joining over 110 British boarding schools, the planting symbolises the ‘tree of knowledge’ and demonstrates each school’s commitment to growth and caring for the environment and sustainability. The olive tree is also a potent ACS symbol, as a similar tree was chosen to commemorate the school’s founder, EJ Poularas, in the walled garden. “The official opening today was a wonderful celebration of our stunning new boarding house, which we are very proud to present to our guests and students,” commented Mark Venn-Dunn, Head of Boarding. He added: “To develop the building, we asked ourselves ‘how should boarding be?’ and ‘how can we create the ideal

situation for today’s children?’ With light, airy rooms, an array of social hubs and state-of-the-art facilities, we believe our new boarding house provides a modern, family-style space to relax, study and live, just like at home.” The new house has six common rooms and two quiet areas for socialising, studying and eating, including a cinema-style room, games room and work areas with flexible furniture and technology for group projects. A triple height atrium extending over three floors maximises natural light and space, giving boarders commanding views across the campus and woodlands. As well as accommodation for boarding house staff, the development includes extensive landscaped areas and a communal BBQ area. The boarding house sits within the school’s 128-acre campus, allowing boarders ‘out of hours’ access to the sports, academic, technology and performing arts facilities, including six tennis courts, a 25-metre pool and six-hole golf course. A multi-million pound refurbishment of Fields, the existing boarding house, is now under way and this will include a new walk-in medical centre with a fully-trained medical team. Tony Eysele, Head of School at ACS Cobham, added: “It’s been fantastic to celebrate the opening of this outstanding new facility for international and local students who find a home from home at ACS Cobham. I’m sure our boarders will thrive in their new dynamic, modern environment and that they will make the most of the fantastic facilities that support a world class education.”

Wedgwood ARTEFACTS EXHIBITION

Leith Hill Place, Leith Hill Ln, Dorking RH5 6LY | 01306 711685

Leith Hill Place has been exhibiting a collection of Wedgwood artefacts unseen by the public for over 50 years. The exhibition closes on 29 October, so time is limited to view this excellent collection. Visitors to Leith Hill Place since April have been treated to a special exhibition of the private collection of the Wedgwood family. ‘Wedgwood at Home’ explores the different types of ware produced by factory, the evolution of the brand in the twentieth century and the influence of Sir Ralph Wedgwood, who assembled much of the collection and first exhibited it at Leith Hill Place in the 1950s. The exhibition has been held in memory of the late Sir Martin Wedgwood, Third Baronet, whose widow, Lady Wedgwood, helped to curate the exhibition. She said: “It’s been a real pleasure to have the collection on display to the public and to see it returned to the original house it lived in.”

New research has also brought to light that, when the collection was originally shown by the Wedgwood family, it included a display of Jasperware trays, with their cups and saucers in different colours, upstairs in the Long Gallery of the original Elizabethan house. Natalie Savage, Visitor Operations Manager for the National Trust, said, “It’s fascinating to keep finding out information about the collection and how Ralph Wedgwood and his family incorporated it into their home. The new evidence was discovered in a pamphlet sent from Canada.” Leith Hill Place is open Friday to Sunday, 11am-5pm until 29 October. Normal admission charges apply to visit the house, which include admission to the ‘Wedgwood at Home’ exhibition. For more information, please call Leith Hill Place on 01306 711685 or visit the website www.nationaltrust. org.uk/leith-hill-place
