COBHAM HERITAGE DAY BRUCE’S DOGGY DAY CARE WHAT’S ON IN COBHAM? MUSIC MATTERS WHAT’S COOKING? ELMBRIDGE FOOD FESTIVAL CROSSWORD

From the Editor

Welcome to Look Local in September! I do hope you all enjoyed a great summer!

Team Look Local had a lovely break and we also took the opportunity to refresh our computer systems here in the office, so we are all enjoying our speedy new computers as we ease back into work mode! We have an action-packed issue for you this month too! I enjoyed a wonderful visit to the Oasis Family Centre, which is situated in the new Cedar Centre by the Library; an amazing lady made an amazing donation and Look Local were delighted to attend the presentation. Making magazines is hungry work, so a meal at the newly-refurbished Plough Inn in Downside went down a treat! Well worth a read, and well worth a visit! We also have exciting news from Bruce Casalis about his ever-popular Doggy Day Care centre, and in addition to this, read all about the fabulous-sounding Elmbridge Food Festival which will be taking place in Cobham towards the end of this month! Finally, I simply can’t sign off without mentioning the Cobham Heritage Day which is due to take place on Saturday 12th September. Our centre pages are dedicated to the day and give all the information you should need to ensure that you don’t miss a thing. We’ve been covering this event for a good few years now and it never disappoints. Well worth putting the date in your diary! Wishing you all a great month! Until next time, do take care,

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, dependent on the level of supervision necessary.

• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

OASIS

CHILDREN’S CENTRE RECEIVES A WONDERFUL DONATION...

• £20,000 donated by Charlotte Grobien, OBE, of Give-it-away for high need families. • Staff moved to tears by generosity. • Donation secures the future of Oasis Outreach service for vulnerable children across Elmbridge. £20,000 was donated recently to Oasis Children’s Centre for vulnerable children and their families across Elmbridge. Charlotte Grobien, OBE, of the company Give-itaway, chose to support Oasis Children’s Centre after hearing about them whilst working on a development project in Woking. Charlotte founded the company in 2005 and has undertaken many projects since, developing and building properties, the total profits of which she then donates to children and young people in need. Charlotte’s focus for donations are always local to the project on which she’s working; she uses local contractors and suppliers each time and is at the heart of every project. Charlotte continues this ethos with her charity donations, choosing four local non-

10 Looklocal Magazine - September 2015

profit organisations or charities each time, and always remaining very much involved in all the charities that she supports. Charlotte said: “I found out about the Oasis Centre through researching local charities that care for vulnerable children. When I visited the centre and met with Caroline, the founder, it was clear to me the work they do is essential to the community of Elmbridge. I wanted to help them to continue to look after these extremely vulnerable children and their families, to help them to rebuild their lives and make positive choices” Caroline Edwards, founder of the Oasis Centre, said: “The tragic fact is that there are many hundreds of vulnerable children and families living in Elmbridge who need our help. This was highlighted just last week when Ofsted reported its findings on Surrey County Councils Children’s Services, labelling them ‘inadequate’ and the serious failings are putting children at risk. Sadly, we see the result of these failings daily within our outreach work

in the community. Receiving funding from Charlotte is incredible because it allows us to continue to look after the families on our register, tailoring individual care plans, running our 24 hr helpline for emergency situations, such as domestic abuse, and putting long-term supportive packages in place so that families and children have a chance of a better future”. Based in Cobham at the new Cedar Centre, the Oasis charity offers a lifeline to many families within Elmbridge across all social circles. Families and children access our services for a wide range of reasons, from social isolation and poverty to children and adults who have suffered all kinds of abuse. Oasis works tirelessly in conjunction with Social Services teams to protect and safeguard vulnerable children and families in Elmbridge, looking at the cause, rather than just the symptoms of families in crisis. All of this is done on a running cost of £150,000 a year, 80% of which is raised through donations and fundraising. If you think you can help Oasis, please do

get in touch via our website www.oasischildrenscentre. co.uk or if you wish to simply donate, please use our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/oasischildcare Thank you. Local statistics • Nationally, one in four women experiences domestic abuse. In Elmbridge, this figure is 1 in 3. • 30% of Surrey children are living in poverty. • With public funding cuts and a lack of adequate children’s services in Surrey, the need for charities like Oasis is higher than ever to protect these children. • Last year, Oasis helped over 300 families to improve their lives and build a better future.

H

ooray! One of my favourite Cobham pubs has recently re-opened. Following a huge renovation and a totally glorious make-over, the Plough in Downside is open for business and ready to receive guests. Look Local went along to take a look around and to sample the new and mouth-watering menu. It’s been a few years since I visited this special place, about twenty-five, if I’m honest! I used to live just along the road, so it was my local for a period of about four years; always full of character, it was a wellused destination for the local folk from Downside & Cobham. Having been closed for a while more recently, it’s now under new ownership and looking better than ever before. We were welcomed by one of the new owners, Jordan, who kindly showed us around. Many of the original features remain, some dating back as far as the 1800s. A ‘snug’ area at the oldest end of the pub is a lovely place to enjoy cocktails with friends. This area can be booked for private cocktail evenings & can accommodate around 15–20 guests. The combination of old & new works so well; the interior has been very tastefully thought out and well put together. Just next to the Snug is the main bar area. It is smart but casual, and the design themes continue to feature here. Behind the bar is a very nice, arch-shaped shelving unit. On display here are a selection of some ‘Best of British’ spirits, which have been specially selected by the owners. The bar is a really nice place to sit & enjoy a drink while you ponder over the menu. The centre of the pub offers a relaxed and comfortable area to simply sit and enjoy a drink or to eat with friends. It really is a great space, and the atmosphere is friendly & welcoming, with a large fire place at one end which was full of burning candles when we visited. I noticed one gentleman was working on his computer and enjoying an evening pint. Also in this centre area

you can see through an open hatch to the kitchen; situated near here is a chiller cabinet filled with a selection of beef joints, from which you can choose your cut. These include a number of locally-farmed joints & some specialty Wagyu beef from Scotland too. As you may have guessed, the menu has an emphasis on quality steak and there are plenty on offer. Also on the specials board this evening; Wagyu burgers and a roast monkfish tail with asparagus. There are also other delicious, non-steak options on the menu. Jordan said that the pub also prepares and smokes salmon, so I decided to try some of this for my first course. We added to this some dressed Devon crab, which was served on toasted sourdough with lemon oil. The flavours were truly wonderful and these two dishes were a great start to our meal. We were seated in the far end of the pub, in a slightly more formal dining area with open patio doors leading out to a pretty terrace and seating area. For our main meals, we enjoyed a Wagyu sirloin steak and a local ribeye, both of which we shared, both of which melted in the mouth! These were served with a red wine and bone marrow sauce and a Bearnaise sauce, fresh green salad, amazing potato wedges and green beans. Both steaks were, I think, just about as good as steak can get, cooked to perfection and as tender as you like! We finished our meal with a naughty treat in the form of Cambridge burnt cream with shortbread (otherwise known as crème brûlée) The Plough is a lovely venue for all occasions, from a quick drink to a slow cocktail, from a special meal to a casual pub lunch. The staff are very friendly, the service was very good and the food really was spot-on. Look Local would like to say a very big thank you to Jordan & to his staff. We had a lovely evening and your hospitality was second to none. We wish you all the very best and feel sure that The Plough Inn will be enjoyed by many for years to come.

OPENS SECOND CENTRE IN RIPLEY

I

always enjoy going to see my friends at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, and my recent visit was certainly no exception. Each time I go, things seem to have developed and improved. It was a warm sunny day and the dogs were enjoying a fun time together. It really is a sight to see. One lovely Springer Spaniel was having such a game with a hosepipe as it was filling a paddling pool, overseen by a member of staff. He had the end of the hose in his mouth and was really enjoying a shower. His tail said it all! You couldn’t help but laugh, and I think this added to his enjoyment. Others were playing games together or interacting with one of the many staff members. I could have watched them all for hours! So many shapes and sizes, different breeds and colours, all of them getting along and having

26 Looklocal Magazine - September 2015

a fun time. The fifteen acres of land which Bruce’s Doggy Day Care covers is so well used and very much enjoyed by these lucky hounds. It was also lovely to see Bruce, although he isn’t quite as entertaining as his four-legged clients! He was happy to welcome me and excited to share some wonderful news too: due to overwhelming demand, he is opening a second Doggy Day Care Centre in nearby Ripley. I went with him to visit the new centre, another similar set-up, with space for his canine clients to run free and enjoy their time away from home while their owners are busy. It has taken a little while to prepare, as new purposebuilt buildings have been constructed to offer shelter from the weather, and these include a top-of-the-range grooming salon. Dog-proof fencing and secure gates all

round, of course! It really is very smart indeed. The offroad position offers plenty of space for the vans to drive in and out and it should all work very well. The other good news is that Bruce will now be able to accommodate all those on his waiting list, and his growing business will also bring more employment to the local area. He is now able to cover more areas, and his service now encompasses Twickenham, Teddington, Thames Ditton and Guildford. Bruce has quite a team of dog carers and drivers these days. He really does offer amazing human-to-dog ratios, so it is wonderful

how much personal love, attention and affection each dog receives. More newly-branded vans will be out and about, collecting and dropping off his lucky local canine customers. As I mentioned above, a grooming salon has been included on site, and there will be an in-house groomer available as a bookable service for his clients. Many dog breeds need regular attention to their coats and this will be a wonderful addition to his business. Look Local would like to be one of the first to congratulate Bruce on his continued success!

BLACKBERRY PEAR

C R U M B L E W I T H C H E R RY M U E S L I T O P P I N G

Tart blackberries, sweet pears & wholegrain muesli give a great contrast of flavours & textures. Prep time: 15 mins Total time: 50 - 55

Cooking time: 35 - 40 mins

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

300g blackberries 2 ripe pears, peeled, cored & roughly chopped 1 tbsp lemon juice 3 tbsp light brown muscovado sugar 150g Bacheldre Watermill Stoneground Spelt Flour 100g cold butter, cubed 50g Dorset Cereals Super Cranberry, Cherry & Almond Muesli

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C, Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease

a 1-litre shallow ovenproof dish. Place the blackberries & chopped pears in the bottom of the dish & sprinkle over the lemon juice & 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Set aside while you make the crumble topping. Place the flour in a bowl, add the butter & rub in lightly with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the remaining sugar & the muesli. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit & press down lightly. Place the dish on a baking tray & cook for 35-40 mins until the topping is golden brown, the blackberries are just releasing their juices & the pears are tender. Allow to stand for about 10 mins before serving with clotted cream.

COOK’S TIP Spelt flour contains a more digestible form of gluten than standard flour, & has a lovely nutty texture. Replace with standard plain flour if you prefer.

Nothing But Grass by Will Cohu (hardback £16.99) This is Will Cohu’s first novel, although he has written several books about nature. This shows in his lyrical description of the Lincolnshire landscape. On a freezing winter’s morning in 1985, Norman Tanner kills his workmate Brian and believes he will never be found out. But Norman doesn’t know how he is caught up in a story that stretches back to the Victorian summer of 1875, when two travellers walking across the Lincolnshire Wolds end up in Southby, a village riven with dark secrets. I loved this book.

Sentimental Education by Gustave Flaubert (paperback £9.99) On the Paris paddle-steamer back to his provincial home, young Frédéric Moreau sees and instantly loves a married woman and contrives an acquaintance with her charismatic husband to remain close to her. His own dreams of professional success, his loyalty to his friends and the real chances of advancement that come his way are all placed second to his great love for Madame Arnoux. Flaubert’s compelling tale of the ideals and impotence of youthful passion in love and politics is set against the Revolution of 1848. Written with dry humour and realism in contrast to the more florid romances of his day, Flaubert perfectly captures the timeless follies of youth.

Neverhome by Laird Hunt (hardback £12.99) Laird Hunt is the author of six novels, but this is the first to be published in the UK. I was gripped from the first page by his concise and affecting prose. Hunt gives us the voice of a soldier who has left home to fight for the Union in the American Civil War. A lethal shot, braver and more ruthless than most, an impulsive act of kindness leads our narrator to be known as Gallant Ash, a name of legends and song. But Gallant Ash has a secret running deep through each act of battle and survival. It’s a secret well worth discovering for yourself. I couldn’t put this book down.

Ever since I first heard Sir Van Morrison’s incredible album, Astral Weeks, I’ve been a massive fan of Van the Man. I was a presenter on Radio Luxembourg in October 1968 when the album arrived in the post for me to review & consider playing on my late night show, Jensen’s Dimensions. It was the age of the singer/ songwriter, & I was a big fan of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, James Taylor, Nick Drake, Cat Stevens & other introspective tunesmiths. I knew about Sir Van as lead singer of the Belfast band, Them, a group which merged pop, rock, blues & soul to have huge hits with songs such as Baby Please Don’t Go, Gloria & Here Comes the Night. The songs on Astral Weeks were something else altogether. The LP contained a spiritual mix of jazz & rock & has easily stood the test of time. Sir Van described his masterwork as an opera of sorts, with tales of defined characters, “a song cycle of poetry & mythical musings channelled from my imagination”. The Guardian’s Laura Barton writes of finding “memories of viaducts & slipstreams, ferry boats & Cadillacs & cherry wine, mingling with talk of Huddie Ledbetter (Lead Belly) & little red shoes. We find the bewitching ‘Madame George’, the ecstatic ‘Sweet Thing’ (my favourite of all Morrison’s music), the great knee-deep tangle of reminiscence that make up ‘Cyprus Avenue’. It was one of those albums that seemed to be about everything & nothing, the past & the now, the vital & the fleeting”. Incredibly, Sir Van was only 22 when he wrote & recorded Astral Weeks, and critics & fans alike pored over the songs, looking for meanings, but Sir Van later told us that “it’s not about me, it’s totally fictional. It’s put together of composites of conversations I heard - you know, things I saw in movies, newspapers, books, whatever. That’s it, there’s no more.” For me, whatever the inspiration & Sir Van’s imagination, I still love hearing Astral Weeks, mainly because it’s one of the most uplifting recordings of all time.

T

he Elmbridge Food Festival returns to Painshill in Cobham on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2015 with a host of local food and drink producers, live cookery demonstrations, musical performers and children’s entertainment. More than 9000 people attended the 2014 inaugural Food Festival, and based on this year’s line-up of activities, a similar strong attendance is expected. Entry and car parking for all visitors to Painshill will be free over the course of the weekend. Gates will open each day at 10.30am and close at 5pm. Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council, Councillor John O’Reilly, said the Festival put the spotlight on all the great food and drink the area had to offer. “Our first ever Elmbridge Food Festival was a standout success and we want to continue to focus on local producers, restaurants and high quality, artisan food-based businesses based throughout the borough,” Cllr O’Reilly said. “I encourage all residents and visitors to Elmbridge to come along to the Food Festival at Painshill, to sample all the wonderful produce, experience the live cookery demonstrations, relax in the picnic area and mostly, to enjoy all that the Festival has to offer.” The Elmbridge Food Festival, organised by Elmbridge Borough Council in partnership with Painshill, will have over 45 stalls, showcasing local food producers and restaurants, including;

· THE BIG RED BUS BAR

- locally sourced beers, ciders, lagers and wines all available from a vintage 1967 Routemaster Bus

· CHAATIT

- Indian finger-licking, vegetarian street food, guaranteed to make you say ‘mmm’.

· MANTIO ICE CREAM - anyone for a 99?

· CHURROS GARCIA

- a small family-run business, serving delicious churros, a light and crisp donut style snack which taste amazing with chocolate. Be part of the ‘Churros revolution’.

· EXOTIC TAGINE

- bringing the exotic taste of Morocco to the Food Festival

· BUMBLEBEE CUPCAKES

- delicious-tasting, stylishly finished cakes and cupcakes The Food and Drink Theatre will be the hub of the Festival, with live demonstrations throughout the weekend, while music from Brooklands Radio and the Ember Big Band, among others, will fill the air. The whole family will be catered for, as the bigger and better ‘Little Foodies’ children’s area returns to the Festival. A full programme of children’s entertainment will be available on both days and will include arts and crafts activities, face painting, balloon modelling, Tudor-style sweet making with Elmbridge Museum and a treasure trail around Painshill with the Elmbridge Countryside team. A detailed line-up of all stalls, Food and Drink Theatre events, music acts and children’s entertainment is available from the Council’s website elmbridge.gov.uk/foodfestival or follow @DiscoverElmb on Twitter to keep up-to-date with all Festival details.

nto blues and purples, very popular in gardens, especially teamed with yellow, noooooooooooooo, although I can see the attraction, as they are at opposite sides of the colour wheel and therefore complementary to each other. Blues go from brightest of peacock blue, through straightforward blue to pale blue, and in the other direction, through lilac and violet to the various shades of purple. Off we trot to the Latin words, then……

Caeruleus is the most commonly seen adjective to show that a plant is blue, & comes from the Latin word for ‘sky’, though it is sometimes spelt coeruleus. Allium caeruleum & Passiflora caerulea both have blue flowers, & caerulescens, or ‘bluish’ is seen in Artemisia caerulescens, the bluish wormwood, & Acacia caerulescens, an Australian shrub known as the limestone blue wattle. Cyanus is another common term for blue, as those of you who use colour printers will recognise, & is used in the name of one of my favourite flowers, Centaurea cyanus, the cornflower. Caesius is a greyish blue, as in Rubus caesius, the European dewberry. There is also glaucus, meaning ‘pale blue-grey’, which many of you will have seen in Festuca glauca, a very pretty & striking ornamental grass. As with the Latin names for other colours, the most frequently used are those which are easily understood by the gardener, luckily for us. So, tone the colour down a bit & you get lilacina or lilac, seen in Verbena lilacina, the lilac verbena, funnily enough; add a touch of red to get violaceus or violet, as in Passiflora x violacea, the violet passionflower; add more red & you get purpureus, as in Digitalis purpurea, the purple foxglove, & this adjective

is a common description for both flowers & leaves; there is also azureus, azure blue, shown in the cultivar name of Pulmonaria angustifolia ‘Azurea’. In addition to a couple of these, if you preface purpureus with atro-, you have atropurpureus, meaning ‘dark purple’, & used to describe a solanum, for example. Solanum atropurpureum is a plant with purple stems, & Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is a small maple with deep purple leaves which become red in autumn. There is also violescens, meaning ‘becoming violet’ or ‘violetish’ (oooh, not sure there is such a word. Never mind...), an example of this being Echeveria violescens, a succulent which is… erm… violetish. In addition, there is subcaeruleus, which means ‘slightly blue’, Finally, as always with plant names, some of the colour terms are used in combination with suffixes to denote a certain part of a plant: for example, cyanus occurs in cyananthus, meaning ‘with blue flowers’, or cyanocarpus, ‘with blue fruit’, or cyanophyllus, ‘with blue leaves’. Latin is a fabulous language & it does really help to know which shade you are dealing with. Next time, white and black, ooooooh, dramatic…..

HEATHER’S

CHARITY HAIR CUT HEATHER WOOD HAS SHAVED HER HEAD IN A BID TO RAISE £7,000

H

eather Wood, CEO at Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, has shaved her head in a bid to raise £7,000 to help support families with a terminally ill child. She did this in honour of all of the families the charity supports, and also her own nephew who has cancer. Heather courageously took to the chair on 17 June 2015 for the chop and Look Local was delighted to attend! Heather has been the CEO at Rainbow Trust since the charity began in 1986. During this time, she has seen the charity grow from the early days when it supported just a handful of families to now, when it is able to help over 1,800 of the 6,000 families with a seriously ill child in England at any one point. In 2014, Heather’s nephew was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and he underwent chemotherapy treatment. Heather commented: “I have undertaken a number of challenges during my time at Rainbow Trust including a wing walk and a skydive. This year, I wanted to do something personal in a bid to raise as much money as possible.

50 Looklocal Magazine - September 2015

Over the years, I have met many families with a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness. The effects on the whole family can be devastating, but having some support at this difficult time can be really invaluable. I wanted to play my part and do something to help Rainbow Trust get closer to its goal and offer help to all families in England with a seriously ill child.” Rainbow Trust is a national charity which offers emotional and practical support for the whole family, from their child’s diagnosis, during treatment and, if needed, through bereavement and beyond. It relies almost entirely on voluntary donations, and thanks to its generous supporters, is able to help families across the UK at these very difficult times. To make a donation in support of Heather’s head shave, please visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/Heatherwood or call 01372 220086 to make a donation over the phone. Well done, Heather, you are an amazing lady. I am very sure your new hairstyle will helping many families over the coming months.

INTERNET

T H I N G S

We are at a stage where most of us use the internet for some purpose, and currently, the most likely uses are to search and browse the web, and to send and receive emails. New developments enable us to connect unrelated peripherals via the internet in our own ‘personal collection’ or ‘cloud’. This is called the ‘Internet of Things’ or IoT. The functionality on offer from these items is wide and varied, with some of the most common uses being: • Heating and temperature control • Video monitoring and recording • Home CCTV • Security monitoring • Movement sensing • Courtesy lighting • Baby alarms • Remote control of electrical appliances • Smoke and carbon monoxide sensing • Door and window monitoring • Home entertainment systems control

( I o T )

• Music streaming Setting up and operating these devices is extremely easy, with the cost per unit as low as £30.00. Most devices conform to an international standard called Z-Wave, which means devices made by different manufacturers will all work together - now that’s a novel idea! The practical use and convenience are key: setting up video to monitor your home or holiday home remotely, controlling lights with motion sensors or remotely for security purposes take just minutes and are totally configurable via a smartphone or tablet app, or simply through a web browser. As the devices are internet-connected, they can make decisions for themselves, based on information gathered from other sources. An example is an automatic watering system for your garden which can be controlled via IoT. It can take into account the weather forecast, so, for example, the system makes the decision not to water your garden now, as the weather forecast says it’s going to rain in a few hours. Very quickly, the flexibilities, convenience and economies on offer become apparent.

BMW E V I E W

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW BMWX5

This big, brash comfort zone of an SUV is so clever & loaded with handy driver aids that you feel you could feed in your destination, let it get on with the ride & sleep off the journey, stretched across the club-class back seat. Trouble is, you’d miss the fun & total pleasure of sitting behind the steering wheel with its racy paddle gear shifts & revelling in this latest BMW’s finemannered behaviour, whatever the weather or conditions. It’s as if the legendary manufacturers who build this car at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA, opted to don their thinking caps & fit out their pride & joy with every gizmo that they could imagine might be of use. The original BMWX5, this one’s elder relative, was destined to become a pacemaker in family-friendly transport, & this newcomer, the XDrive40E, could be mistaken by its looks for its predecessors. Wrong! This baby is far removed from its sibling - a hush-hush treat of silence even at 70mph, when the only invasion into the luxurious cabin is the swish of its tyres & the amiably gentle rush of wind. The exclusive gentlemen’s club lounge discreet atmosphere, even at speed on a motorway, induces those sitting around the leatherwork to lower

their voices to non-intrusive whispers. And BMW has proved that big is not necessarily clumsy, with a dasher from stop to top speed that adeptly makes deft progress & light work of whatever bumps & potholes loom threateningly into path. This is where those gizmos come into play, with innovative automatic solutions to whatever hazard bids to unsettle the BMW’s elegance in motion. There is not enough room here to list them all, but I would point out a navigation system fitted as standard, that makes allowances & figures out traffic situations, your route’s characteristics & even your driving style & requirements to steer you economically and safely to where you want to be. Oh, & buzzers to let you know if you’ve wandered out of your lane, are in danger of being walloped from the rear end or running into a collision or a traffic jam, & a night vision system that distinguishes

between pedestrians & animals. Phew!!! Need I say more? This plug-in hybrid suffers no vibration, no noise, & mercifully for skinflints like me, reduces petrol guzzling to a comparative trickle on its all-wheel drive. A clever marriage of technology with down-to-earth thinking teams its twolitre turbo-charged petrol engine with a synchronous electric motor for a combined power show of 308bhp. And minimally low emissions. The battery can be plugged in at home & recharged in around 4 hours which, on its own, gives you a range of 19 miles with a top speed of 75mph, although that pace would seriously cut back the range. For a techno dunce like me, still in awe of the wonder of on-off light switches, the X5’s help modes which sort themselves out & find their way through an ultra-smooth eight-speed automatic transmission, are a wonder. Overall, BMW has come up with a winner in a heavily-contested SUV market where plug-ins are fast becoming the rage. Specification: BMWX5 Drive40e. Engine: 1997cc, 4-cylinders, turbo plus electric motor. Power 308bhp. Transmission: 8-speed automatic Performance 0-62mph in 6.6 secs. Topspeed 130mph. Fuel 85.6mpg. Price (UK) Approx £52,000.

Plant Swap and Sale A sense of eager anticipation built up as we prepared the Cobham Village Hall and gathered the plants together for the Transition Cobham Plant Swap and Sale. By opening time we had seven tables full of healthy plants ready to be making Cobham healthier, swapped and bought. Plants included tomato seedlings, happier and more resilient bamboo, orchids, conifers and dahlias. Over 50 local residents shared our enthusiasm and supported the event. After tea and homemade cakes, the swapping and buying began. By the end of the afternoon all of the plants had new homes, and many people left with smiles on their faces. We are very grateful for the support and encouragement given by the Cobham Garden Club, everyone who attended the event, and all who helped on the day. Please come and see us in the very near future when we will start to create the Cobham Community Garden on the Leg O’ Mutton Field. We’ll be at Heritage Day on the 12th of September and we’ll be happy to show you where the garden will be.
