WELCOME OUR SEPTEMBER MAGAZINE Who said British Summers are awful? It’s certainly been a scorcher this year hasn’t it? As World Cup fever and the Wimbledon tennis season both seem like a distant memory, I wonder if this year will be etched in our memories like the last big heat wave summer of 1976? I was 12 then and I remember being on holiday in Cornwall with my family, it was totally lovely, and will always be a cherished memory. This year I’ve struggled to keep my hanging baskets alive and like all the gardens around here, my grass has looked so brown for most of the past months. By the time you read this, I hope it will have perked up a little ! Much fun was had at the Saint Andrews School Colour Run at the end of last term. Look Local went along to capture the day. See our centre page spread. Plenty of interesting nuggets for you to read in this issue; these include news from a new business called ‘Slipper Camps’. Find out about the lovely mini-breaks they offer. They sound like really good fun and a great way to get away and relax, learn some new skills and meet new friends too! Also included this month, a packed itinerary from Oxshott & Cobham Music Society, well worth saving dates in your diary/ booking your seats… Fresh starts for many young people this month, we send Good Luck to all the children starting school, and also to the young adults flying the nest and heading to Universities far and wide. May all your new adventures be good ones … That’s about it from me, until next time, do take care,

Wild Alaskan Salmon WITH CAULIFLOWER & CELERIAC MASH Ingredients Method ½ tbsp unsalted butter 1 echalion shallot, finely diced ½ small cauliflower (about 300g), in small florets 200g celeriac, peeled and diced 100ml semi-skimmed milk ½ lemon, zest and juice ½ tbsp olive oil 2 Waitrose 1 Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Fillets
1. Heat the butter in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the shallot, cauliflower, celeriac & a pinch of salt, cover with a tightfitting lid & cook for 15mins. Add the milk & simmer gently, uncovered, for 10mins until the veg are tender (don’t worry if the milk looks split). Whizz in a food processor until chunky; season with salt, pepper & the lemon juice, then tip back into the pan, cover & set aside. 2. Wipe out the food processor & add all the salsa ingredients to the small bowl. Pulse, season & set aside. 3. Preheat the grill to high (220˚C). Brush the oil over the salmon, season & sprinkle with most of the lemon zest. Place, skin-side up, on a parchment-lined baking tray. Grill for 3mins, then turn flesh-side up & grill for another 2mins. Pile the mash, salmon & salsa onto plates & sprinkle over the remaining zest.
Herb salsa Handful each flat-leaf parsley, basil and mint leaves 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small garlic clove, crushed ½ tsp dijon mustard Cook’s Tip ½ tbsp red wine vinegar If you don’t have time to make the salsa, spoon over some Waitrose 1 Pesto ½ tsp capers Genovese.

COBHAM PLAYERS CELEBRATE 70YRS OF AM DRAM!
With three productions a year performed at the Cobham Village Hall in Lushington Drive, the Cobham Players put on a Pantomime in January, a Spring Production in April and an Autumn production in October. They have recently invested in new lighting and sound equipment so the standards of the productions are constantly improving. 87 year old Mary Worsfold, has been a member from the start. She recalls the first production, Aladdin and this year, along with the Lady Mayor, Lord and Lady Acher, Committee Members and the cast of the January Pantomime Aladdin and His Magic Lamp, of course, celebrated to honour her commitment and decades of contribution to the Society. Cobham Players not only produce and present three productions a year, but they also boast notable wins at prestigious Drama Festivals. Their pool of talent

OXSHOTT & COBHAM MUSIC SOCIETY ocms-music-org.uk
One of our most recent soloists was Sheku KannehMason, 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year. He has since played at the Proms, the BAFTA Awards Ceremony, the Royal Wedding at Windsor as well as at our OCMS Celebrity Concert last year.
Many of our recent new members were surprised that, having lived in the area for years, they had only just heard of the Oxshott and Cobham Music Society. So, to widen our local appeal, we shall be advertising all our classical concerts this season in this magazine. For 77 years the Society has had a long and distinguished history of encouraging young talent who later became leaders in their field of classical music, such as Nigel Kennedy, and also of promoting famous international musicians in its Celebrity concerts. Our previous concerts have included Tasmin Little, Stephen Hough, Nicola Benedetti and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, to name but a few. If you are interested in checking this, look at our
website where they are listed - ocms-music.org.uk. All our concerts are held on Saturday evenings in the superb acoustic and comfortable venue of Holy Trinity Church in Claygate. Most concerts begin at 8pm, except the one in January which will begin at 5.30pm. Membership is very good value at £80 per annum which covers tickets for each of our six concerts, amounting to little more than £13 per concert ! Nonmembers pay £20 per ticket and £22 for a Celebrity Concert - so it is far better value to join the Society. Compare this to the cost of tickets to hear such talent at the Wigmore Hall, the Festival Hall or the Barbican, -and all without the need to travel by train in these uncertain times!
To mark the start of this year’s programme we are offering a non-member entrant to our quiz, a prize of two tickets to the October concert or an £80 membership of the society at half price i.e £40. “What (more or less) numerically links the following composers? Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Vaughan-Williams, Dvorak” Please send your answer by email to mfwoods71@gmail.com or by post to OCMS, 7 Fishersdene, Claygate, Esher, KT10 0HT CLOSING DATE -10th September 2018. DRAMA Claremont Fan Court School
Show week for Year 6 is a wonderful celebration of the children’s time in the Prep School. Working on the production brings the School community together in a special way, with its success due to the huge effort made by the staff, parents and, of-course, the children. For
most children, it is the only time that they will appear in a production of this calibre and it is a week when lifetime memories are made. Our audience are in for a treat!’ Mrs Helen Hutton-Attenborough, Head of Claremont Fan Court Preparatory School.

GARDENING MATTERS
HOW TO REPAIR BALD PATCHES IN YOUR LAWN Cecelia John: 01372 200 000 | ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk Well, you’ll have a lot of these at the end of summer if you have children/grandchildren, and they look horrible (the bare patches, not the children/grandchildren). Thankfully, there’s no need to worry because with the right seed mix, you can repair your lawn very easily. You’ll need grass seed, top soil, a hose and a lawn rake. Choosing the best grass seed for you will depend on what your lawn’s used for. If it’s often used for the family or as a play area for children, choose a seed mix with added ryegrass to provide a hard-wearing grass. If it’s essentially a show lawn (oh, how I wish…), premium lawn seed mixes contain a blend of the best varieties of grasses to give a super duper lawn. If your lawn is sheltered and doesn’t receive direct sunlight - eg at the corner of the house, under a tree or under a trampoline - choose a mix specially designed for shaded areas. And now, how to repair that bald patch. First, use a lawn rake to remove any debris. It’s important to rake your lawn, especially during autumn and winter, as leaves and other debris can damage it, due to a lack of light and air. Before you start sowing any seed, scatter a layer of top soil over the area and then sprinkle the grass seed evenly over that area. Try to make sure that the seed is sown close enough together so that no patches
26 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
are left, but spread out enough for the grass to grow. The back of the pack will state recommended application rates. As a more general one-step solution, MiracleGro Patch Magic is a pretty effective patching product, containing grass seed, feed and coir compost, which is perfect for repairing smaller patches. To protect your newly-sown grass seed from birds, cover the seed with a light sprinkling of top soil, taking care not to block all the light from the seeds. This is not foolproof by any means, and you may have to net the area to prevent birds being able to land and peck…. trust me, they can undo all your good work in a matter of minutes once they have called up all their friends to join them on this upmarket picnic. And keep it wellwatered: a watering can with a fine rose is perfect for this, as it will water the area very lightly and stop you drowning it. Also, keep your lawn free of weeds & moss by applying a high phosphate food specific for lawns as soon as the seeds have germinated. Finally, don’t be in a hurry to mow the new grass, and for the first few months, don’t cut your grass too short… oh, and make sure the blades are very sharp. Hey presto, no more bald patches (till next summer).

COLOUR
RUN
On Thursday 28th June 450 children aged between 4 and 11 took part in St Andrew’s School first ever Sponsored Colour Run. The Colour Run was held to raise money for an Outdoor Gym to be installed in the school grounds during the summer holidays. Children ran laps of the track on the school field whilst being drenched in colour by very enthusiastic parents! All the children began the run wearing a white t shirt and ended up looking like they had been tie-dyed! I did wonder who had the most fun though! The children running or the parents throwing the paint? Some of parents seemed to have more paint on them than their intended targets!! At the end of it, fantastic fun had been had by all and the children are already asking when they can have another Colour Run, with many parents asking if they can join in next time! Thank you to local Cobham businesses and the Chamber of Commerce for generously sponsoring the paint.

DRIVER BAD HABITS
I am on a swerve, changing direction a wee bit in my motoring column. And how about this for a talking point? Motorists in our region are rated among the country’s guiltiest of bad drivers. So there... Who says so? Not me. It is the result of a countrywide survey by the well respected Accident Advice Helpline, one of the UK’s main injury claim specialists. They help thousands of road accident victims, physically and financially, in legally dealing with the disastrous outcomes of poor and careless driving. Road hoggery (my newly invented dictionary entry) is a curse we careful and considerate drivers abhor - and this survey, citing the South East as a culprit zone, pinpoints the rank bad and their risky attitudes. Bad habits apparently creep in less than two months after drivers have removed their L-plates. And spokesman David Carter revealed:”Our study found that lots of drivers are happy to admit bad practices when they are behind the wheel - and, sadly, we have to deal with the consequences.” So just what are the bad and dodgy habits? Before their first six months are up on their full licence some motorists will have stopped holding the steering wheel in the “ten-to-two” position and are unlikely to check their rear-view mirrors every time they make a manoeuvre. There’s more, says Mr Carter. The average driver, putting their own safety at risk by abandoning the seat belt inside three months, will have run a red light inside four - and, by month five, will be making dodgy illegal U-turns as second nature. “Bad driving habits,” he adds, “can compromise safety and
42 Looklocal Magazine - September 2018
our research suggests it is all too easy to let driving standards slip. In fact, a tenth of all those surveyed admitted to having had an accident due to getting slack with following the rules of the road.” So how long does it take drivers in the south-east to fall into dangerously and stupid bad habits? Here’s the Accident Advice Helpline list.... Holding the steering one-handed - three months. Abandoning the “ten-to-two” position - three months. Not checking your mirrors - three months. Changing direction without indicating - four months. Tailgating - four months. Hogging the middle of a motorway - four months. Overtaking dangerously - four months. Running a red light - four months. Driving without a seat belt - two months. Illegal U-turns - four months. Throwing litter out of a car window - three months. Fumbling for something in your bag while driving - five months. Parking on double yellow lines - four months. Pulling out in front, cutting up another car - five months. What the survey failed to reveal was how many loonies on the move in our -four-by-four territory do you see gabbing on their mobile phone or munching butties? Hands up ( but not if you are reading this while driving) if you are blameworthy for any of the above motoring sins. Come on...be honest. By Ted Macauley

BOOK REVIEWS SEPTEMBER
‘Only to Sleep’ by Lawrence Osborne (published 6th September, hardback £12.99) Philip Marlowe is back for one last case. He’s 72 and living in retirement in Baja, California. He’s persuaded to investigate Donald Zinn - supposedly drowned off his yacht leaving a much younger and now very rich wife. But is Zinn really dead? Is it an insurance scam - are the pair living off the spoils? Lawrence Osborne pulls this one off with aplomb. Hugely enjoyable.
‘Less’ by Andrew Sean Greer (paperback £8.99) Going anywhere to do anything may not be the most dignified career choice for a man approaching 50, but Arthur Less is prepared to be versatile. His boyfriend of 9 years is marrying someone else, his latest novel has been rejected, and Less is on the run from disappointment. So he accepts all the literary invitations he’s received from around the world - Japan, India, Germany, Morocco credibility not required. The fine balance of humour, poignancy, travel, literary establishment backbiting and unrequited love is delightful. Genuinely funny, deeply moving. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2018.
‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney (published 6th September, hardback £14.99) Normal People follows Connell and Marianne from the same small town in the west of Ireland but they are from different worlds. Connell’s mother works as a cleaner in Marianne’s family home. When they both earn places at Trinity College, Dublin a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. The writing feels very truthful and profound.

We are really excited to announce our appointment as an official “Microsoft Surface Resellers”, this great news offers the full power, flexibility and performance of the Surface, linked with our legendary support and backup service making this a really compelling option The Surface is available in three very different form factors or styles; It all started for the Surface Pro, which is very much a Windows workstation but in tablet form, with a fully functional keyboard (option), weighing in at less that 800grams, with a full 12.3” high resolution display and Windows 10 Pro, there is no need for compromise. The battery will last for a massive 13.5 hours of use and prices starting at only £699, making it a serious contender for any mobile user.
The Surface Laptop, has redefined what a laptop should be, With 4K HD graphic’s, battery life of industry beating 14.5 hours, a range of configurations to provide for everyone’s needs, weighing in at only 1.25Kg, this is a go anywhere machine. The Aluminium cased machine

houses a 13.5” Pixelsense Touch screen, be prepared to be impressed. With pricesstarting at £749.00 this machine truly is a game changer.
The final portable in the new line-up is the Surface Book 2, this is a 2 in one machine which means the screen is detachable and becomes a fully functioning tablet, dock the tablet back on the keyboard and you have a fully functioning laptop with sufficient battery life to run for 17 hours. Available with two different screen sizes 13.5” and 15”, the weight is very impressive for such a powerful machine being just 1.5Kg for the 13.5” model and 1.9Kg for the 15” unit it makes for an impressive package. Prices starting at just £1035.00.

GARDEN WISLEY Flower Show bursts into bloom
A six day floral celebration from 4-9 September 2018 The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is inviting all garden-lovers to attend a late summer floral celebration at the RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show, supported by Witan Investment Trust. Now in its 26th year, the highly-anticipated show is set to delight visitors with spectacular displays and shopping opportunities from 4-9 September 2018. Set within the picturesque surroundings of the garden, the show will host more than 50 specialist nurseries who will showcase their top quality plants, alongside new exhibitors for 2018 displaying horticultural delights, such as air plants, unusual shrubs and an urban rock garden display. The Show is the ideal place to go for expert advice, whether it’s from the specialist nurseries attending – many of whom are RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Place Flower Show medal winners – or the inspirational talks and demonstrations taking place in the Expert Zone. An exciting first for this year is The British Flower Bus. Attending as part of its nationwide tour, the Bus is the focal point of a campaign led by renowned floral designer Jonathan Moseley to champion the resurgence of British-grown cut flowers. Show visitors will be invited to board the bus to watch Jonathan’s floral design demonstrations and discover all about the campaign. Another must-see is the National Dahlia Society Annual Show (4-7 September), which will provide visitors with the chance to view the very best in dahlia

cultivation and colour. It features more than 100 vibrant competition classes, and a special class for ‘The Wisley Challenge’, consisting of five vases of five blooms. Visitors to the Dahlia Show are invited to get involved and enter their own blooms into the ‘My Best Garden Dahlia’ competition, taking place on 8 and 9 September. On either day, entrants just need to bring along a single stem of any type of dahlia that they have grown, to be judged by a panel of experts. Show visitors will also be able to view creative displays from the Surrey area of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS), which features over 100 stunning floral art creations based on the theme ‘Something in the Air’. Matthew Pottage, Curator of RHS Garden Wisley, said: “The RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show is the ideal place to ignite a passion for gardening. From show stopping floral displays, to expert advice and unique shopping opportunities, there’s something to inspire each visitor. It’s also the perfect time to wander through the garden to see late summer horticultural highlights, such as the Exotic Garden, which has had its first full growing season, and is an immersion of lush foliage and exotic flowers.” Admission to the RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show is free to RHS Members, normal garden admission applies to non-members. For further information, including how to book tickets and travel advice, visit www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley.

Transition Cobham gathered to pull Himalayan Balsam along the River Mole as it is a non-native invasive species that grows along waterway corridors crowding out native plants. Where this happens along the riverbank there is no vegetation to strengthen the integrity of the banks over the winter (when it dies back) and they are left susceptible to erosion. Is it worth celebrating that "Plastic" has been declared the children's word of the year after analysis of the stories submitted to the BBC by five to 13-year-olds in a writing competition. It is refreshing to think the extent that children are becoming more and more aware of the hazards of plastic pollution and is a good sign for the reduction of its use in the future.
