Welcome to our super summer issue which covers both July & August. We are delighted to share with you our visit to The Ivy Cobham Brasserie. We had such a great night, I hope you enjoy our review and that it tempts you to book a table and to try it for yourselves. Also, coverage of a wonderful charity event hosted in Cobham by Newwave Cross Fit and My Little Princess Parties. A great time was enjoyed and they raised a huge amount for a very deserving cause. Well done, you truly are a lovely bunch of superheroes! In addition, we include coverage on an Open Day at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care...looks like they had such fun!...and we bring you news of a whole selection of other events and activities going on over the summer months in and around the area. We will be taking a short break during August but look forward to bringing you more coverage of local events and news in September. I wish you all a lovely summer and do take care not to burn if you venture out in the sun (this seems like appropriate advice as I write this in a heatwave in mid-June - 30+C - but of course, it may well be totally ridiculous by the time you read this. In which case, don’t forget your umbrella!) Take care, until next time…

COBHAM BRASSERIE +
T
his lovely new restaurant has certainly caused a stir locally. The much-acclaimed Ivy brand has been warmly welcomed by many lovers of fine food in Surrey. And the opening nights were buzzing with inquisitive locals keen to see and be seen at The Ivy Cobham Brasserie. The transformation of the well-known historic building at the end of Cobham High Street is in itself quite amazing. The trademark Ivy stained glass windows and the classy Ivy entrance are very inviting, but once inside, the full extent of the refurbishment really hits you. I remember visiting this building for a special family celebration as a child, and even then, (and I’m talking 40 years ago), it seemed old-fashioned to my young eyes. Now you couldn’t expect a bigger transformation, the whole building is reborn! A magnificent example of art deco design in bright colours. Eye-catching art work

adorns the walls and there is a bar that any fancy London establishment would be proud of. The staff are polished and professional but naturally friendly, the tables were beautifully laid out and positioned well, and huge, wonderfully eye-catching flowers add to the stunning interior design. We were shown to our table and we soaked in the atmosphere as we pondered the menu, which offers an appealing selection. Although very classy, this restaurant is comfortable and has a great feel to it. The outside areas look convincingly Mediterranean, and if you managed to catch a nice English summer evening, would make for a wonderful al fresco experience. We sat towards the back of the restaurant at a very nice corner seat, and enjoyed a deliciously chilled aperitif. These were served with a little bowl of arancini balls and went down very well.
We made our choices for dinner and I enjoyed chatting to my son who had returned from Australia for just one week. Our waitress Ettie, was lovely. She answered any questions we had very well and she did a great job of looking after us. Our meals of choice were as follows:To start: Tuna Carpaccio - yellowfin tuna with tomato, watermelon, ponzu dressing, miso mayonnaise and toasted sesame. Wasabi Prawns with salt and pepper squid. For main: Aromatic Duck Curry - fragrant coconut duck curry with lemongrass, lime, chilli, roasted cashews and steamed jasmine rice. English Fillet 7oz/200g - succulent prime centre cut, grassfed English fillet. This came with a choice of sauces
(my son chose the BĂŠarnaise sauce) and a side order of chunky home-made chips. To finish: Frozen Berries - mixed berries with yoghurt sorbets and warm white chocolate sauce Chocolate Bomb - melting chocolate bombe with milk foam, vanilla ice cream and honeycomb centre with hot salted caramel sauce All were beautifully presented and tasted superb. My son said his steak was the best he had ever eaten and the duck curry was delicious too. To accompany our meal, we enjoyed a bottle of chilled rosĂŠ and we finished off with cheese and a pot of fresh mint tea! This was an exceptional meal in a beautiful restaurant. Highly recommended, I have already booked to return shortly. Our thanks go to Mr Richard Roper, the General Manager, and his very lovely team.

ASK BRUCE
+
TAKING YOUR DOG ABROAD
+
Look Local reader, Jade, has a five-year-old mixed breed rescue dog that she will be relocating to America. Jade asks: how can I prepare her for the journey? This is a big move for all the family and for your dog. At five, she is mature enough to cope with the experience, but not too old for it to be challenging. There’s a lot to think about in advance. Make the most of specialist pet travel companies that can help – from handling paperwork to sourcing pet-friendly airlines. Taking your dog to the USA is relatively straightforward. She will need a vet’s examination no more than 10 days before you go, with a letter from your vet saying she’s fit to travel on a plane. Some US States also require a rabies vaccination. Your dog will need a travel crate for the journey. Do make sure you buy one that’s big enough for her to stand up, lie down, stretch out, and turn around in. She’ll be in it for some time so it’s essential she’s comfortable. It’s very important your dog is familiar with the crate too. Start getting her used to it now; introduce toys, food and treats to build a positive association early. For the journey, be sure to use bedding that she’s recently used at home so that it has a familiar and reassuring scent. I’m sure she’ll be fine and love her new life in America! Let’ s Rock Shrewsbury THE RETRO SHOW
I had a truly poptastic weekend in Shropshire recently co-hosting Let’s Rock Shrewsbury, the Retro Show with Pat Sharp. It’s a movable festival, rocking and roaming the land far and wide for fans of the 80s and lovers of some of the most entertaining stars who bring the music of yesteryear to the fore with some electronic wizardry and clever musicianship. Some of the outstanding musicians graced the stage, while 10,000 fans danced and sang along to the cascade of hits. Among the entertainers were Nick Heywood, once of Haircut 100, now an established solo star, who had the good grace not to play songs from his great new solo release, which is out in few weeks. His set in Shrewsbury consisted of his impressive repertoire of hits and yet more hits. The ever-popular Tony Hadley did a full hour of hits from his spell as lead vocalist with Spandau Ballet, as well as several cover versions which reminded us just what a treasure he’s become. Nick Kershaw was at first unrecognizable with his white goatee, but once he plugged in and strummed his way into Wouldn’t it be Good!, there was no mistaking that guitar sound of his. Jaki Graham was her usual foot-stomping self and Billy Ocean topped the bill with unforgettable dynamics and a brilliant back-up band. Other fine hit-makers included Altered Images, Heaven 17, The Real Thing and local faves, T Pau. I had a ball and hope you’ll be able to join the Retro show sometime over the next few months.

ADVANCED LIGHT THERAPY
It is always a treat to visit Toni Renecle at her home-based skincare clinic, and my recent visit was no exception. Toni is always very well-informed about new treatments and she is very knowledgable regarding skincare in general. Today, she wanted to tell me about ‘LightFusion advanced light therapy.’ My treatment started with a Dermalogica pre-cleanse which dissolves make-up, sebum and environmental pollutants from the skin’s surface, enabling the skin to be thoroughly cleansed. The Dermalogica products are very gentle and felt truly lovely when applied to my face, very cool and soothing. After this, my skin was cleansed further with the Skin Resufacing Cleanser which cleanses and exfoliates at the same time. Daily Resurfacer was then used prior to commencing the LightFusion treatment. This gentle yet powerful leaveon exfoliant is perfect for brightening and hydrating the skin. At this stage, Toni was happy to start the actual LightFusion therapy treatment. This treatment doesn’t take long: it uses wavelengths of pure red visible light and near infrared which are the best wavelengths for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. They allow the cells to breathe and brighten the skin. The treatment increases collagen and elastin synthesis, it reduces fine lines and improves tone & general skin texture. In addition, it increases natural skin hydration and improves the skin’s radiance. It reduces the appearance of any enlarged pores and also stimulates lymph activity to eliminate toxins

+
and accelerate healing. It also hydrates and firms your skin. Wow! And Toni was confident that I would see a noticeable difference in just one treatment. This all sounded amazing and I was excited to see the results. The treatment itself was relaxing and pretty quick. The Hydrogel Facial Mask was placed on my face. This mask is specifically formulated for phototherapy and remained on during the 10 minute treatment. When the mask was removed, my skin felt really lovely, and when I looked in the mirror, it really did appear to be more radiant and dare I say it, more youthful! Toni said the treatment continues to work and I would see the results further improving over the coming days. Indeed, my skin does look much better. It is recommended to have a short course of treatments and Toni has a special offer running over the summer which I highlight below. This is a great way to treat your skin to a pick-me-up and I really could see the results after only one treatment which I think is pretty amazing. I must say I was very impressed. Thank you very much Toni, I am very tempted to return for more of this amazing LightFusion advanced light therapy. Of course, you may not recognise the very radiant looking me when I turn up! As a stand-alone treatment, the cost is £40. Ideally, one should commit to a course for the best results 6 TREATMENTS - PAY FOR 5 = £200

A
SUMMER TASKS
nd now it’s July, so there’s plenty of deadheading/cutting to do. Keep deadheading annual bedding plants eg petunia - to prolong the flowering display, and cut the flowering stems of sweet pea regularly (probably daily), otherwise they’ll become peas. Deadhead roses continually, unless they’re being grown for their display of autumn hips. Snap out the spent flower stems of pinks, and if the plants are old, take cuttings for next year now, planting new shoots into a 50:50 mixture of compost/sand. Cut delphinium and lupin to the ground after flowering and you may get a 2nd flush of flowers. Prune back the spent stems of philadelphus once the flowering display has ended, and cut 30-40% of the recently-flowered growth right out to stop it becoming too congested, leaving an open crown in which the new long shoots can receive good light. In wet times, perennials such as alchemilla and hardy geranium sprawl over their neighbours faster than ever. Cut them back with secateurs, or if you’re brave, pull them off by the handful, taking care not to uproot them. After 24 hours, you’ll hardly see they’ve been disturbed. Result. Keep dahlias heavily staked. Canes won’t do… little dahlias may look after themselves, but by the end of the season, tall ones will be ready to lurch or crash down in wind and rain. Pull off the remaining tops of oriental poppies (the hairy, perennial ones) and fill the
+
gap with bedding plants for the rest of the season. Plant gorgeous autumn-flowering nerine and colchicum; the latter in particular need a rich soil in part-shade…under trees or shrubs is perfect. The leaves of colchicum appear in spring after flowering and are strappy and unsightly, so plant where autumn flowering is visible but where their spring foliage is out of the way. Make sure the long growth wands on climbing roses are tied in or shortened before winds can rip them down, and watch for clematis montana eating its neighbours for breakfast. Disentangle, peel back and cut off the most wayward stems. More stems will follow, and you can keep doing the same until September without any loss of next spring’s flowers. And so, we come to watering. Unless you have a watering system (like meeeee) or a willing slave (unlike meeeee), there’s no way to escape this task. The display of flowering plants such as phlox will be greatly reduced if they’re allowed to wilt. In hot weather, water early in the morning/later in the evening to avoid rapid evaporation and scorched foliage: water droplets act like mirrors with the sun. In particular, water roots of Michaelmas daisies well. Raise the blades on the lawn mower in hot, dry weather, and summer-feed and water the lawn well. Finally, the best advice: don’t plant too much because you’ll be forever watering. And keep spare plants for hanging baskets: something always dies and upsets the balance, gaaaaaaaah. Most of all, enjoy, enjoy.

Holding by Graham Norton (Paperback £7.99) Sergeant PJ Collins is under-worked and over-fed in his quiet village of Duneen. One day, a body is unearthed during building work, attracting a flashy detective from Cork and putting PJ under pressure. A shameful street brawl twenty years ago, a man’s disappearance soon after, three sisters bound together by grief, a marriage hanging by a thread... what do these have to do with the body? As the attention of the village falls on PJ, will he be able to untangle the rumours from the facts? This is a hugely enjoyable and humane novel that shows Norton revelling in his Irish upbringing and expressing its quirks with affection. The idiosyncratic but believable characters show Norton’s empathy for Duneen’s inhabitants, their lives shaped by family, church and community, their grief and guilt disguised. Norton’s keen eye for the ridiculous balances the poignancy of his tale, and his writing is irresistible. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, (Paperback £8.99) Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. When a new slave, Caesar, arrives he sees in Cora the will and bravery to join him in his plan to escape from the hopeless brutality of their life. In Whitehead’s novel, history is vividly recalled through the lives of Cora and Caesar as they flee, pursued by Ridgeway, the slave catcher. In imagining the underground railroad as a physical reality of tunnels and trains, Whitehead creates moments of otherworldly mystery. These moments, whether of solace or fear, magnify the real efforts and achievements of the railroad’s agents and the courage of its passengers. As neighbouring states are moving away from slavery, devising more subtle abuses or sticking firmly to their guns, there is an atmosphere of dangerous fragmentation and uncertainty. Whitehead’s brilliant novel ensures that we remain riveted to Cora’s every step. The Gabriel Hounds by Mary Stewart (Paperback £8.99) Set in the isolated and decaying palace of Dar Ibrahim in Lebanon, this mystery is written with Mary Stewart’s characteristically deft touch. Christie Mansel leaves her privileged life to take care of her eccentric Aunt Harriet at her remote and crumbling home. The howling of dogs welcomes her. The servants are evasive, the palace is filled with hidden passages and suffused with the deathly legend of the Gabriel Hounds. Christie soon realises that a real secret lies hidden there and that someone believes it worth killing for. First published in 1967, Mary Stewart’s perfect balance of suspense, adventure, humour and romance makes this an ideal escapist summer read.

ACHIEVES LONG-STANDING AMBITION
O
xshott and Horsley Choral Society joined together recently to perform their summer concert ‘An Evening with Mozart’ to a packed audience of over three hundred, in the beautiful setting of St John’s School Chapel, Leatherhead. The concert had been provided with an underwriting grant from the RC Sherriff Trust and sponsored by The Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust. The evening commenced by showcasing the wonderful variety and talent of this great composer. The Raven Ensemble Strings began the programme with a beautiful performance of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The first half included two pieces sung by the hundred choir members, as well as a trio and solos by the four soloists; Jane Searle (soprano), Louise Innes (mezzo-soprano), John Upperton (tenor) and Stephen Holloway (baritone). It was a sunny, warm evening, and during the interval, the audience and musicians took refreshments in the

stunning grounds of St John’s School. The second half started with much anticipation. It had been a long-standing ambition of the conductor, Valerie Beynon (Oxshott choir’s conductor for 42 years), to perform Mozart’s Requiem with an orchestra. The orchestra stuck up and the soloists and choir rose to the challenge. Fifty minutes later, it was all over, finishing to rousing applause from the audience. The performance had been exhilarating, exciting and awesome. What a night to remember! Are you interested in joining Oxshott Choral Society? Rehearsals for their next concert start on Wednesday 6th September (7.45pm) at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Oxshott. If you are interested in joining or knowing more about the choir: • Contact the secretary on 01372 842300 • Visit the website: www.oxshottchoral.org.uk

Peugeot 3008 +
T
SUMMER REVIEW
hankfully, I have been stared at for reasons vastly different from when I was driving the freaky Post Office mail van lookalike, the bizarre offering by Citroen of the forgettable C3. And last time out in this column, I did reveal I would be reviewing the brand new Peugeot 3008. It is, thankfully, a top cat car…a PURRgeot…that got the cream and the award as Car of the Year in a respected prestige international motor magazine – all down to the brilliance and initiative of the admirable French company’s designers’ dash and inventiveness under pressure. The upshot, as welcome as can be, is a vastly improved second-generation 3008 that bears the significant hallmarks of improvement on its dull predecessor, and in the hotly contested SUV/Crossover market that is crucial to making it a real all-round treat for the buyers and, therefore, a surefire financial hit for the Gallic manufacturers. After all, style is said to be second nature to the French and here they have fully justified that reputation in the completely overshadowing of the 300’s now-gone older sibling SUV. I was mystified by the niggly nitpicking and trivial faultfinding of an irritating fellow reviewer who seemed to see more bad than good in the newcomer, which in my humble opinion has more pluses than minuses and seems to be the ideal contestant to set the pace in the SUV race. After my exasperating spell in the multi-coloured C3, it was a real joy to be seated in the refashioned 3008 on a trek to the Lake District with Trophy Wife, vast suitcases an’ all, under the gaze of amused and scoffing fellow motorists in their runof-the-mill cars. The 400-plus mile round trip, taking in motorways, alternately crowded and crawling and fast-moving, and then onto the twisty lanes around Coniston, was achieved

without a single moment of discomfort, anguish or regret and with a firm ride and safe feeling feedback. We arrived as fresh as can be with hardly a dent in my wallet…or TW’s purse…with the fuel flowing sparingly and returning a smooth and economical journey. Our traded thoughts were an agreement that the design team and engineers have done a superb job in turning out a nice looker with performance to please. And our upmarket lake view hotel car park was a fitting showcase for our upmarket transport. TW drove us home and she too echoed my appreciation of the willingness and response of the engine and the car’s solid and secure feel with its electronic grip traction control facility actioned. It is NOT a real off-roader in the rough riding, mountain-climbing 4x4 Range Rover sense, but the switch-on control smooths out the bumps on the lumpier lanes. Gadgetry? Yes. Aplenty. And completely uncomplicated, even for tech dunces like me. The upgraded and uprated Mark 2 offers a 12-inch instrument digital display feature and touchscreen, taking in sat-nav, rear parking sensor, climate control and a thorough infotainment system. The teeny-weeny steering wheel seems odd at first sight and initial grip, but it gives the driver an impression of fast and keen response and consequently boosts confidence that the car is heading the way you want it to go. And that’s my baseline thought on this near-perfect Peugeot innovation which mixes excitement and economy in a rare combination and is heading in the right direction in every sense. Specification: my try-out model was the SUV3008 GT, Blue HDi 1997 cc. Horsepower 180@3750rpm. Speed 131 mph. Acceleration 0-62 8.9secs. Fuel 58.9 mpg. Price: £33,155.

In the past month, there have been several serious IT -related issues which have impacted the NHS, county councils and British Airways with pretty devastating effects. The software attack that hit the NHS was a malware attack with WannaCry ransomware. The malware blocks your machine and encrypts your data, stating that you must pay a ransom to gain access to your data. This software is very effective as, generally, there is no removal process or way around it. You have only two options, recover your data from an earlier backup or pay the ransom. This malware attack is generally on machines using old versions of Microsoft Windows, such as Windows 95, 98, XP, ME, XP and Vista. These are all operating systems for which Microsoft has stopped issuing security updates and support, and they are vulnerable. If you have a computer using any of these operating systems, you should seriously consider upgrading to a version which has the security updates, such as Windows 7, 8 and 10. The backing up of your system can be done in a number

What does this mean for you if you have an older device? In short, you will not see any improvements or bug fixes, and you leave yourself vulnerable to the likes of the above-mentioned malware. Have an enjoyable summer.

Is 20 plenty for Cobham? Transition Cobham backs the nationwide 20’s Plenty campaign for 20mph to become the default speed limit on residential streets. This can be done without any road or infrastructure changes and is implemented as compliant drivers become pacer vehicles to limit and enforce the making Cobham healthier, speed of the following traffic. For source of information happier and more resilient and images see http:// http://www.20splenty.org/ Advantages: Safer - Reduces casualties Cheaper - Road traffic injuries, air pollution and obesity are all inter-related and cost our health care systems. Quieter - vehicles travelling at 20mph can be up to 40% quieter than at 30mph Reduced pollution - ‘What Car’ magazine found that for many cars 20mph was the most efficient speed. 20mph also means less acceleration and braking. Communities - Streets become more pleasant places.
Disadvantages; Journeys may take a few seconds longer.
