Calling all Treasure Hunters and Alumni to help locate lost treasure and join royal bicentenary celebrations The Royal Kent School (RKS), Oxshott is appealing to the local community to help find alumni and locate a missing time capsule in preparation for the school’s official bicentenary in 2020.

On 16 October 2020, the Royal Kent School Oxshott (RKS) will commemorate the founding of the school over 200 years ago. The school was named ‘Royal Kent’ as it was set up under the Patronage of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, who lived in nearby Claremont and his sister, the Duchess of Kent and mother to the future Queen Victoria. Unfortunately, there are no crown jewels buried in the school grounds, but RKS staff and pupils are searching for treasure of another sort. A lost Time Capsule, buried 50 years ago to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the school, has yet to be found. The school is appealing to the local community and businesses who may be able to provide information or even equipment to locate the time capsule and help with the search for alumni. The original school was located on Oxshott High Street before moving to its current home in 1958. Visible reminders of the 1820 building include the roof turret bell still used to signal the start of the school day. The 1958 school hall remained untouched until Summer

2019 when it received a much-needed makeover thanks to a successful bid for Elmbridge Borough Council’s CIL funding and the school PTA. As part of the bicentenary festivities, RKS plan to create a mural for the hall and a ‘school museum’ so that pupils and visitors are transported back in time to get a glimpse of the school’s past. Historical artefacts include a copy of the rules for teachers from 1872 and 1915, school photos and a punishment book from the early 1900s. Any prospective teachers will be relieved to know that filling lamps, cleaning chimneys and bringing a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal are no longer part of everyday class duties! RKS shares its bicentenary year with several famous Britons including Florence Nightingale, Anne Bronte, Herbert Spencer (Philosopher) and Anna Sewell (Author of Black Beauty). Anyone in the local community connected with these national treasures or celebrating their centenary in 2020, should contact the school to see how they be part of the celebrations.

vegan sausage pasta A quick and simple vegan dish. Cherry tomatoes are roasted with garlic just until they pop and blister, for a lovely intensified tomato flavour thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lighter and fresher-tasting than a classic tomato sauce.

ingredients method 400g cherry tomatoes 4 garlic cloves, sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 300g pack Linda McCartneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6 Vegetarian Sausages 2 courgettes, trimmed and sliced Pinch salt 300g elicoidali pasta tubes Handful basil leaves (Serves 4)

1. Preheat the oven to 200Ë&#x161;C, gas mark 6. Toss the tomatoes, garlic and 2 tbsp oil in a roasting tin; season. Remove the packaging and film from the sausages but leave in the foil tray. Put the roasting tin and foil tray in the oven for 15 minutes, giving each one a toss halfway through. 2. Heat the remaining 1 tbsp oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the courgettes with the pinch of salt for about 8 minutes, turning regularly until golden. In a separate pan of boiling water, simmer the pasta for 10-12 minutes then drain, reserving a cup of pasta water. 3. Remove the courgettes from the frying pan and set aside on a plate. Slice the sausages and add to the pan, frying for a couple of minutes, then tip in the pasta, tomatoes, any roasting juices, 2-3 tbsp pasta water and the courgettes. Toss together briefly and serve scattered with basil leaves.

Dead/ diseased/damaged/very old material is cut away, along with unnecessary parts, so that energy is concentrated on increasing flower production. Firstly, remove all suckers down to the ground. Then, remove all dead, diseased and very old wood. The removal of the latter will encourage new growth from the base. Next, remove crossing branches which can rub against others, causing wounds and encouraging disease. Then you can begin to shape the plant. Usually, roses are pruned down to 2-3 leaf buds. This sounds savage but I’ve rarely had casualties from this method. Choose an outward-facing bud to encourage a good shape, otherwise it will grow in and cross with other branches. Prune as close to a leaf bud as possible without nicking it with the secateurs and at a 45° angle to allow rain to fall off, reducing the risk of water-loving fungal diseases. Just to be awkward, different types of roses need slightly different treatment. With shrub and ground cover roses for the 1st few years, cut out old and weak growth after flowering (with shears for ground cover roses). Then, cut out ⅓ of the old wood to the ground each year.

Climbers have 1 good-sized individual flower at the end of each shoot, with repeat flowering. After the 1st year, prune out the soft growth and the top of the branches to 2 buds in late autumn/early spring. The aim is to retain a permanent framework of branches, so train in new shoots horizontally, not simply to replace the older branches but because roses flower better horizontally. Prune back sideshoots to 6ins. or less, according to vigour. With an old established rose, start at the bottom, cutting out the 2 thickest, oldest stems. Prune the rest back as described. Ramblers have a mophead of individual single flowers in one flush. Prune all flowered shoots immediately after flowering in summer to a 2nd bud, take old wood out at the base, train in and tie up new shoots. Hybrid teas have one good-sized flower on each stem. Leave for 1 year, then cut back the old wood to 4ins. above ground level in early spring. To renovate, cut out the old wood to ground level. Floribundas have clusters of small flowers. Cut back to 6-8ins. in late winter/ early spring. The shape of the crown of standard roses should be maintained. Cut back to the 2nd bud of each flowering stem and give extra foliar feed because it has a long way to go down. Lastly, cut patio and miniature roses down to 2ins. in late winter/early spring each year. But don’t worry too much about the niceties, I regularly butcher roses and they always seem to come back, bless their little rosy hearts. Happy November.

Who could fail to love a Panda? No wonder they are so popular and stir such admiration and affection. They have rare appeal mainly because they are engaging, attractive and are relatively inexpensive to maintain. My emphasis is focussed on the little joys manufactured by Fiat. Their Panda, not the newest brand on our highways and byways, is a surefire winner in the hotly contested small city car market where value for money is a premium factor. Producing small cars is a Fiat stronghold.Their Panda was revitalised for an eagerly welcomed relaunch in 2011 - and the Italian masters of the small car have continuously and painstakingly updated and improved its performance and kerbside appeal. It may not be as super sophisticated as its foremost rival, the Volkswagen Up, but on the road, where it really matters, its response to one’s demands is very satisfying. It is safe and sound. As nippy as needs be on just about every hectic and threatening trip into the city from the suburbs. And, as an essential safety-first extra, the latest Panda

offers an ‘imminent collision detection’ device which slams on the brakes automatically if it feels a prang threatens. How about that for considered concern? Basically, not too much has changed over the years and it still prefers practicality over pompous style.
