your best asset is a good plan
Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. - Benjamin Franklin, 1789
INVESTMENTS AND TAX
Benjamin Franklin’s quote is often repeated, because however we try and accumulate wealth, the taxman wants his share. Another tax year-end brings the inevitable rush to use tax allowances; pension contributions for tax relief, ISAs to shelter savings from tax. It’s always sensible to minimise tax on savings, and topping up pensions is rarely a bad idea. But without a longer term plan, often tax is merely deferred (and increased dramatically), not prevented. For many investors, building an ISA portfolio of £200,000+, about how much tax might they save over 20 years? Let’s suppose an investor prudently spreads an ISA portfolio between cash and stock & shares, building £200,000 over 20 years with £100,000 in each. Interest rates are low, but let’s assume average interest at 4%pa, with £5,000 invested each year. This generates total interest of £40,100 which at today’s basic tax rate saves a very welcome £8,020 in tax, spread over 20yrs. But sadly, especially in Cobham, anyone saving this amount in their lifetime will probably lose £40,000 in Tax immediately on death - tax not avoided, but deferred and increased by up to 5 times. Enter Benjamin Franklin and his two certainties…! Of course, that’s just the Cash ISAs, what about stocks and shares? Even allowing for market volatility, it would be poor-performing equity ISAs that only match the return of cash over 20yrs. But in tax terms, it matters not. How much tax do we think our ordinary investor will have saved in the accumulation of £100,000 in stocks and shares ISAs over 20 years? For most investors, NONE. Not any, no tax saved at all in the investor’s lifetime. But on death, the same Inheritance Tax applies, so that’s another £40,000 gone. A lifetime’s £200,000 tax efficient savings possibly ‘saves’ less than £16,000 in tax, then ultimately pays £80,000 in tax on death. At 4%p.a. interest and 3.5%p.a. dividend, the portfolio would pay total income in 20 years of £75,000. So the investor may even get less total income than the taxman! The family in this case would inherit £120,000 after the Inheritance Tax deduction; it just feels wrong that ‘tax efficient savings’ potentially give more benefit to HMRC than the investor. As a Chartered Financial Planner, I specialise in increasing your personal wealth and that of your family. So I’m pleased to be able to advise my clients how to use the rules to get lifetime tax savings AND avoid the deferred tax on death without incurring extra costs or restricted access. To deal with Benjamin Franklin’s two certainties…

In 2012, the first Sam Beare Hospice Ladies Lunch and Fashion Show was held at the Hilton Hotel, Cobham, and has since become an annual event greathy looked forward to in the social calendar. On Monday 10th March, 126 ladies gathered once again at the Hilton to enjoy a delicious lunch and then to watch a fashion show featuring the latest Spring/ Summer looks. However, this was a show with a difference, as some of the outfits were from
Debenhams and Surrey Brides, but others came from the Hospice’s own charity shops. A fun competition was held to see how easy it would be to spot the difference and we fooled them all! The organisers, Margaret Watford and Pam Ling, have been friends for over 40 years, and following the sad death of Margaret’s husband John in 2011, they decided to raise some much-needed funds for the Hospice in
FASHION SHOW & LADIES LUNCH IN AID OF
SAM BEARE HOSPICE
recognition of the wonderful care and support John had received there. Since then, the friends have been involved in raising many thousands of pounds through a variety of events, from tombolas at Sandown to donated days from local businesses, pamper evenings and of course, the ever-popular Ladies Lunch & Fashion Show. The pair assures me that they have great fun as ‘ad hoc fund raisers’ but say this is mainly due to the wonderful
people they meet and the support of people for whom the Hospice, in the heart of Weybridge, is a most important facility. They are deeply grateful for the help they receive from friends and family, a lot of whom were ‘persuaded’ to model in this year’s event!! Apparently, plans are already underway for next year’s event, so put a note in your diary for early March and watch this space for details.

Advice and things you need to know

What is this? ... It is a QR code, or Quick Response Code.
The QR readers are available for most smartphones and are usually free to download and use. Once installed you simply select the App, point the phone’s camera at the QR code and you will be taken to the website. The codes can be printed anywhere and, when scanned by a smartphone, take the user straight to the chosen website. Try it for yourself - this one goes to the Smith Pearman website! For businesses, they provide an easy (and cheap) way of getting potential customers to go from an advertisement or product packaging to the business website (or indeed, any selected page on the website). QR codes can be generated free on a number of websites. You simply enter the webpage address (thehttp://.......) and download the resulting QR code which you can use on adverts, fliers, packaging etc.
Increasingly, you will see them on magazine and newspaper adverts, on advertising hoardings and notice boards, on labels attached to exhibits and even on business cards. They give the user an easy way to get further information without having to note anything down. In 2011, the Royal Dutch Mint issued a coin with QR code on – taking you to the webpage giving details about the coin and the building it celebrated. There are even gravestones with the QR code on (carved in stone of course) linking to a website with details of the deceased. The codes were originally devised for the Japanese car industry to keep track of components but are now used world-wide for all sorts of applications. QR code is actually a trademark of Denso Corporation who also hold the patent, but use of the codes is free.

THE BAKER’S DAUGHTER
The daughter of a well-known Weybridge baker is to have her family’s tea shop tales and recipes published in a baking memoir by Pan Macmillan. Louise Johncox grew up helping her father, Peter, run his bakery & tea room, Peter’s, on Church Street, Weybridge. The tea room was a staple in Weybridge life and was known for its homely and nostalgic 1940s style and fittings until its closure in 2000.
of 2007, Louise decided to follow her father’s advice to get “her hands messy” and Peter set out to teach her to bake for the first time. Sadly, Peter died in April 2012 as Louise was still learning from him. This final period spent with her father had a special value to her: “Looking back, the experience of baking with my father brought me closer to him and taught me far more than just the recipes from the shop. I learned a lot about his life and my mother’s life and marvelled at the success they had with Peter’s and a long marriage of over 50 years.” Although Peter had been surprised that Louise was writing about the tea shop for her Ph.D, he had offered his full support, frequently asking “how’s the book going?” Although he did not live to see the book published by Pan Macmillan, Louise is sure that he would have been contented: “Family members have said how proud he would have been to know that all the hard work I had put into the book over so many years led to two published versions.” The book already has its endorsements: Louise’s mother Frankie, who had worked as the “welcoming face of the shop” and now in her 70s, has become a keen baker after testing the recipes along with other family members and friends. The chef, Albert Roux, has written the foreword. With the book finally released, Louise herself is “letting all the ideas bake” for the next. The Baker’s Daughter by Louise Johncox is published by Pan Macmillan and is available from all good book shops & retailers for £20. For more information, see: http://www.panmacmillan.com/book/ louisejohncox/thebakersdaughter
Written by: Henry Turner
Louise’s book, aptly named The Baker’s Daughter, is part-cookbook, part-family history, and catalogues recipes going back generations to Louise’s ancestors on the Swiss-Italian border, as well as nostalgic remembrances of life in the tea room. Each chapter is tied to a facet of life in the shop with an accompanying narrative, and includes recipes grouped by theme, such as children’s cakes, classic tea shop cakes and European pastries. All are complemented with related anecdotes and descriptions, as well as stories about individual customers. Many wrote to Louise expressing fond memories “for the handcrafted cakes and chocolates and the warm family atmosphere created in the tea room”. Louise’s work on the project began in 2007 when she was participating in a writing workshop and decided to write about her childhood in the family tea room: “I was partly inspired by the book, Toast, written by food writer Nigel Slater. I was struck by the fact that he formed stories about his childhood through food.” The idea had merit and when starting a Ph.D in Creative Writing, Louise got to work writing a 60,000 word manuscript. Looking to expand the work to include her family’s unique recipes, she quickly received a shock when she discovered that her father hadn’t recorded them in detail. Louise therefore took it upon herself to do so with her retired father. It became quickly apparent that formally interviewing Peter with a dictaphone wasn’t a substitute for practical experience. Despite their ancestry and family heritage, none of Peter’s children had opted to follow their father’s footsteps into baking. So in the autumn
GARDENING MATTERS Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are in decline globally, and one of the main causes is the loss of flowers, especially in the countryside. Increasingly, gardeners are looking for ways to help bees and other insects by providing attractive flowers for them to feed on. To do this, they often use ‘pollinatorfriendly’ plant lists, but these lists are generally based on opinion/experience, rather than scientific research. Professor Francis Ratnieks and his Ph.D student, Mikhail Gaburzov, from the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects at Sussex University completed one of the first scientific studies to put the recommending of pollinator-friendly garden flowers onto a firmer scientific footing. Funded by the Body Shop Foundation, it involved counting flower-visiting insects repeatedly over two summers as they foraged on 32 popular summer-flowering garden plant varieties in a specially planted experimental garden on the university campus (each variety in two 1x1m beds). Plant varieties included 19 species and hybrids, both native and exotic to Britain, with particular focus on 13 varieties of lavender (Lavandula spp.), as it’s known to be attractive to bees, and also four dahlias. All the plants studied had to be popular garden plants, be easily available to buy and had to flower mainly or exclusively in July/August.
The key findings were: • Bees (87%) and hoverflies (9%) were the most frequent visitors, with butterflies and moths just 2% and all other insects also 2%. • There were clear differences in the mix of bee and insect types attracted by different varieties, indicating that careful plant choice can not only help insects in general, but also a range of insects. • Open dahlias attracted many bees, especially bumble bees, whereas pompom dahlias attracted few insects because the highly-bred flowers make it difficult for insects to reach the pollen and nectar. • Highly-bred varieties of lavender, including interesting colours, such as white or pink, or hybrid lavenders, proved very attractive to insects. The researchers recommend the following plants to gardeners: • Marjoram - the best all-rounder, attracting honey bees, bumble bees, other bees, hoverflies, butterflies. • Lavender and open-flowered dahlias - the best for bumble bees. • Borage - the best for honey bees. • Erysimum Bowles Mauve (hardy wallflower) - the best for butterflies. The least attractive flowering plant to insects was the pelargonium. Although this trial isn’t exhaustive – they looked at a small selection of the thousands of plants found in a typical garden centre – the study shows clearly that planting pollinatorfriendly flowers is a win-win solution to help bees. The plants attractive to bees are just as cheap, pretty and easy to grow as those that are less attractive. Helping insects in your garden is a no-brainer: plant the right flowers and they will zoom in.

MEDICAL MATTERS!! HAVE YOU PLANNED YOUR HOLIDAY YET OR THINKING ABOUT TAKING A GAP YEAR & BACK PACKING?
An important part of your planning should be considering travel health issues. Complex travel (such as back packing, travelling across several countries or a trip lasting more than one month), especially with an unplanned itinerary, may require several weeks of repeated appointments to ensure all vaccinations are complete. Some vaccinations are available on the NHS free of charge; however, others are not and can be very costly. Make sure you are given a written record of vaccinations for your future reference. Other equally important issues to consider include taking out comprehensive travel insurance, especially for longer trips. Water and food hygiene are crucial to ensure your health is maintained while away. If you are unsure of your water source, bottled water is essential - for drinking and for cleaning teeth. Also beware of ice cubes in drinks. For areas where malaria is a problem, stringent care to avoid mosquito bites is paramount. Malaria mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, so if out and about at these times, best to cover up with long sleeves and trousers. Take an insect repellent with you (usually better than buying locally) which contains up to 50% DEET. Malaria tablets may need to be started up to three weeks before travel, so again, factor this into your plans. These are not available on the NHS and usually there is a charge for a private prescription and a further charge when collecting the tablets from the pharmacy.
Happy holidays and keep safe!

Windows XP and Office 2003
RETIRES IN DAYS On April 8th 2014, Windows XP and Office 2003 ‘retires’. If you are a Windows XP or Office 2003 user, what will it mean for you? The simple answer is that you will no longer receive Microsoft updates, security fixes, assistance or support concerning Windows XP and Office 2003, but the copy of the software on your computer will continue to work: it will not suddenly turn off and cease to work.
Is that a big deal? On the surface, not really. However, because your XP computer will become a less secure device, some companies have stated that they will not allow Windows XP to connect to their secure websites. This could impact any website that has a shopping basket or secure sign, be it your bank, building society, ebay, PayPal, supermarket , Government/ tax office, this list goes on. Due to the lack of updates and increasing security risk, some commentators have stated it will become a hackers’ paradise, as they will be finding more ways to penetrate your system with little to stop them. The ramifications could be massive: you will leave yourself venerable to hackers and risks. If you have a machine which is 4 or more years old, we would urge you to replace it; if your machine is less than 4 years old, you can buy a replacement Windows 7 or Windows 8 which will provide you with the most up-to-date supported and secure product.
The cost of the new version operating system starts at £95.00 for Windows 7. If you are taking this opportunity to upgrade your system, we can provide you with a service to copy all your existing data, information, emails, music, photos, shortcuts, internet favourites and so on to a new machine. We can even send an engineer round to your premises with the new equipment and install and set up the system, making the transition as simple as possible. Should you not wish to embrace the latest Windows 8 software, we do have stocks of Windows 7 machines too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY They say “Time flies when you’re having fun”, and the fact that M Thorne Consulting Limited (MTC) is celebrating its third business birthday this month proves the point. Set up in April 2011 by experienced HR professional Mara Thorne, MTC is the Bookhambased HR consultancy which specialises in supporting small and medium-sized businesses in Surrey with all their employment challenges. Mara remembers the early days, when work was scarce and clients hard to come by, as though they were yesterday. “It was such a milestone when I signed up my second client,” she reminisces. “He was recommended to me by my first client and I literally skipped across the office and gave him a big hug!” In fact, many of Mara’s clients have come on board as a result of referrals, which is a terrific vote of confidence in her services, but more recently, her online efforts have paid dividends too. “Before I set up the company, I had no idea what Search Engine Optimisation meant, and thought social media was something only teenagers used. But now, more and more clients are finding me online. It’s particularly nice to hear they like the videos on my website!” If you employ people or are thinking of doing so, MTC’s website is well worth a look. Mara is a prolific blogger and if you are wrestling with an employment-related problem of any sort, chances are you’ll find an article offering useful tips on how to tackle it. And if you’re new to managing people, her book “The Dirty Dozen of Business: Twelve
42
Management Mistakes (and how to avoid making them)” is packed with easy-to-read case studies pointing you in the right direction. You can download it to your Kindle, request a pdf from the website, or simply call and ask for a physical copy. In the three years since inception, MTC has helped a wide range of clients, from estate agencies to manufacturers, jewellers to security specialists, with diverse issues including recruitment, contracts of employment, misconduct, sickness absence, poor performance, redundancy and much more. In fact, the business has grown so strongly that MTC has now formed an alliance with an Associate Consultant, Sam Gold, who owns Gold HR Limited, based in Farnham. Mara and Sam provide cover for each other in times of heavy workload or when either of them is on holiday, thus providing clients with seamless access to HR advice and support whenever needed. “It’s amazing how much the business has changed in the last three years,” Mara muses. “Little did I imagine when I signed up my second client that I’d now be needing extra help to keep all the plates spinning! But I am thrilled with how well things are going. It’s hard work but great fun, and I’m loving every minute of it”. In these difficult economic times, it’s great to hear another Bookham business success story. Happy birthday, MTC! For help with any employment issue, check out MTC on: www.mthornehr.co.uk, telephone 01372 700139 or email mara@mthorneconsulting.co.uk

A New Treatment Room and Charitable Direction for
ABC Dental is proud to announce the inauguration of its new treatment room which will focus specifically on the revolutionary OBAGI System facials. Our approach to facial aesthetics is defined by our team’s commitment to prolonged restorative solutions to skincare worries. Our OBAGI System facials reduce the appearance of hyper-pigmentation and age spots, as well as stimulate collagen synthesis, boosting the skin’s natural defence against future damage. ABC Dental has introduced this breakthrough treatment as a direct response to the concerns of our clients who didn’t necessarily have a ‘target’ area in mind, but rather a desire for brighter, healthier and revitalised skin as a whole. Honouring and cultivating a strong sense of trust with our clients - and indeed the community at large - is fundamental to our business ethos, but with this comes a responsibility to give something back to
those who need it the most. ABC Dental is therefore pledging to donate 10% of its profits from facial treatments to Harrison’s Fund, a local charity, raising money to help find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a fatal disease in children for which there is no cure. Harrison’s Fund is trying to change that.
About Harrison’s Fund
The charity was set up by Harrison’s inspirational parents after he was diagnosed with the disease in 2011. The aim of the charity is not only to support Harrison and children like him, as well as their families, but also to help fund the scientific research which could eradicate this horrific illness for good. ABC Dental is immensely proud to be supporting Harrison’s Fund and to be a part of this journey towards a better future for all children.
