Welcome to our April issue,

I do hope you are all well and that you enjoyed a lovely Easter break. I spent some of the long weekend sorting out my garden, and although I certainly don’t claim to have green fingers, it was good to tidy up a little after the dull months of winter. The grass is growing and the trees are budding. I’m looking forward to the green outlook after the bare tree view of the past few months. I must say, I’m even tempted to grow some veggies this year, nothing too ambitious, but the memory of the aroma and the taste of freshly picked tomatoes is tempting me to get my hands dirty! We are delighted to bring you lots of local news this month. St Matthew’s School in Downside has a wonderful new classroom! We have coverage from the official opening event. Two of my own children, now in their 20s, attended this lovely local school, and they have many wonderful memories from their time there. I know this new space will be very well used for many years to come! We also welcome a lovely article from local historian David Taylor. What a fascinating place Cobham is, we thank you for your contribution, David. Once again, Cobham Bowling Club is opening its doors to welcome you; why not try your hand on the green? I hope to make it along to one of the open day events myself this year. As well as all this, a very inspirational local lady shares her incredible story, as she walks the walk for a cause so very close to her heart. Information also on a very popular local charity fashion show, be there or be square! Read an amazing account of a very grand tour taken aboard the QM2 by Mr Ted Macauley and his wife recently, A poem from CT Sullivan and coverage of a great evening I spent at The Art Shed in Cobham too. Added to this mix our regular puzzles, recipe, gardening feature, book reviews, dates for your diary and so much more, I bring you this month’s Look Local in Cobham !

ASK BRUCE: MY FIRST DOG In this month’s Ask Bruce column, we cover some suitable breeds for first-time dog owners, as requested by readers Sarah and Ed Constable. They have two children aged eight and 10 and enjoy the outdoors. Given they are keen for a medium-sized dog, spaniels are ideal but may need lots of exercise, particularly working cocker spaniels. Hungarian vizslas also make excellent family dogs and are very good with children, as are labradors. However, a dog breed is a very personal choice, and there are many other lovely breeds in addition to these. We’re always happy to chat in more detail and offer advice for people getting a puppy. On the smaller side is the cockapoo, which has a lovely disposition and the added bonus of not moulting. With all of these breeds, do remember, if taking them on as puppies that you’ll need to dedicate a lot of time, training and care for the first six months. Alternatively, you can go for a mixed breed from dog rescue centres like the Dogs Trust. As these tend to be fully grown dogs, you’ll be able to see their size, and the charity will have spent time with them so will know their personalities and make sure you get something that suits your lifestyle. In terms of travelling in the car, all dogs travel well if trained. So here’s to lots of fun family holidays together – enjoy! Opens new classroom...

S

t. Matthew’s opened their new classroom last Friday, with the sun shining and everyone celebrating this unbelievable achievement. Headteacher Rhian Thornton said ‘We started this journey in 2008 and did not give up. We were determined to expand and develop this site in some way and now we have the most beautiful additional learning environment for the children. Through determination, passion and commitment, we have completely self-funded this new classroom. The fundraisers, staff and governors have worked so hard for over 7 years to make this happen. Mrs.

Thornton said ‘Having been headteacher here for 11 years, I named the building, which was an honour. The children here at St Matthew’s achieve great things and are very happy, sparkling and shining in all they do. I therefore named the classroom the ‘Sparkle and Shine’ Building and want the children to know that if they put their mind to something and work hard, they can achieve great things.’ The ribbon was cut by Rhian Thornton, Headteacher, Kathy Hutt, Assistant Headteacher, Don Seeback, Chair of Governors, Katie Banfield, former head of the PTA, Nina Wilkins and Jen Nutbrown, the current Chairs.

It was a remarkable event, with a strong family and close-knit community feel. St. Matthew’s is a very special place, the only Outstanding state school in Cobham, and it consistently delivers outstanding education to the children there. Mrs. Thornton said ‘We do not stand still at St. Matthew’s, and though we do not have the funding other schools seem to have in abundance, we are outstanding in spite of that. The building was blessed by Revd. Hugh Greer and the children presented beautiful cards to the architect and project manager, James Griffiths, who kindly volunteered and gave his services for no charge.

Rhian said ‘St. Matthew’s is that sort of school. We care about each other and the children and the whole St. Matthew’s community, and we have strong values. That is very endearing to people and parents. We really do know and care about every child and give that personal touch. The next part of the project is also very exciting, as we refurbish our existing classrooms and create wonderful new opportunities throughout the school’. Mrs. Kathy Hutt, Assistant Head, takes over as headteacher in September, as Mrs. Thornton leaves to take up a headship at a school in Windsor. The next Open Morning at St. Matthew’s is June 10th when you can meet Mrs. Thornton and Mrs. Hutt.

GREEN CARPET CLEAN

07758 124797 | 01372 776077 www.greencarpetclean.co.uk Two of my sons drink a lot of tea! And occasionally, one of these aforementioned beverages ends up on my lovely lounge carpet, which is not ideal. As a result, I decided to call in some expert help to save the day. But before I tell you about that, coincidentally, on the very same day, I heard a radio programme which confirmed that my choice of carpet cleaners was a very good one. The radio show in question was about the link between household cleaning chemicals and asthma, and also, growing evidence that many such products are linked to the ever-increasing cancer statistics. Personally, I’m not surprised, I’m already pretty convinced that we

20 Looklocal Magazine - March 2016

could all do with going down a far more organic route in many ways… air fresheners, and cosmetic body sprays were also being questioned. Inhaling these unnatural smells has never felt good to me. Green Carpet Clean provides a totally dry, totally organic carpet cleaning solution. But even I, with my pro-organic ways, did wonder if this non-chemical process would win in the fight against tea stains. Tony Simmonds, the owner of the company, explained that he uses an American product and system to clean carpets, which includes a special organic mix made, in part, from wood, with a pleasing and slightly citrous aroma. This mixture is sprinkled liberally over the carpet, then a special carpet cleaning machine brushes and sucks up the mixture which brings with it the dirt. It’s remarkable! A few little areas on the lounge carpet needed a small amount of spot cleaning by Tony, again with organic products, and then the carpets in my house all looked like new again. And since this process uses dry products, there is absolutely no waiting around before you can walk on your carpet again. That evening, as my cat sat washing his face on the lounge carpet, I felt very pleased that even he was not ingesting any unpleasant toxins in the name of a clean carpet. The tea drinking continues, but now that I can call on Tony to help out, I am less worried about the prospect of the next accident. See here, my lovely carpet looking ‘new’ again! If your carpet’s could do with a makeover, I highly recommend Green Carpet Clean.

TEXT SPRO 90 £5.00 TO 70070

JOIN GEORGE’S

F I G H T TO B E AT C Y S T I C F I B R O S I S A Cobham woman, who has battled end-stage cystic fibrosis and had a double lung transplant in August last year, is keen to raise awareness about the disease. Georgina (George) Compton will be taking on the Great Strides 65 annual 40 mile (65km) walking event on June 11th, which she never thought would be possible this time last year, wheelchair bound and dependant on oxygen 24/7. Anyone who wants to sponsor George’s efforts in the Great Strides 65 event can do so at justgiving.com/Teamsprog/?utm. You can also donate by text SPRO 90 £5.00 to 70070. Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening genetic condition, which causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation of the lungs. George’s story has been well-documented in both local and national media. Last summer, she was on the lung transplant list, with end-stage CF, when an operation to widen a vein caused a stent to slip into her heart and suddenly escalated her

condition to critical. She was transferred to Harefield Hospital in Middlesex, where after three false alarms, she finally received a double lung transplant and had the heart surgery she desperately needed. George will have to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of her life and she still has CF. But she is determined to grab this second chance at life and make the most of every day. George is also asking people to join a social media campaign called the Strawfie Challenge. “It’s very simple” said George. “You try breathing through a narrow drinking straw, with a pinched nose for 60 seconds. Then you take a straw breathing selfie - a Strawfie and post it online with our donation details - Text BWCF64 £5.00 to 70070.” The donation will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust - visit breathewithme.info. The idea is to have as many people as possible posting their strawfies from 1st May. CF Awareness Week is 9th - 15th May this year and the hope is that by then, thousands will have joined in. www.thesprogslife.com

Rain by Barney Campbell (paperback £7.99) Rain is an authentic account of a young man’s experience of soldiering and the war in Afghanistan. As an officer just out of Sandhurst, Tom Chamberlain is sent to Helmand Province, where his training and the bonds formed between soldiers are tested to the extreme. The culture shock of returning home for R&R, re-entering civilian life with a military mindset, is truthfully portrayed, before Tom is sent out once more to complete his tour. Whatever your political views about this war, Rain brings home the sheer extent of the physical, intellectual and emotional realities faced every day by those on the ground.

Post Mortem by Kate London (paperback £7.99) No run of the mill crime novel, but a nuanced and credible insight into the complex hierarchies within London’s police force. The location of the book is a rundown London suburb and you get a real sense of the multicultural melting pot that forms the neighbourhood. There is a clash between the established communities and the newcomers who have a forlorn hope in a promised British justice system. Kate London spent time working in the Met and it shines through in this strong debut.

Sweetgirl by Travis Mulhauser (hardback £12.99) Be prepared for your pulse to race as you read this debut novel. During a blizzard in the Upper Midwest, sixteen year old Percy searches for her missing mother at a local meth lab. She finds dealer Shelton unconscious with a young woman and, upstairs and unexpected, a desperately neglected baby. Percy takes the baby and journeys into the snow in search of help from the one friend she can rely on. Meanwhile, Shelton sets out to hunt them down with his crew of addled mercenaries. Percy and Shelton are vivid, complex characters and the reader is plunged deep into their dangerous world.

The wonderful Ray Davies is one of the most successful and influential songwriters to emerge from the glorious British invasion of the international pop scene of the mid-60s. He formed the Kinks with his brother, Dave, in North London in 1964, and Ray went on to sing, write, create some of the best-loved songs and anthems of the era. Hits such as You Really Got Me, All the Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting, Set Me Free, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Apeman, Come Dancing and Where Have All the Good Times Gone (which was later covered by David Bowie on his Pin-Ups album) are all evocative memories from an amazing time. Actually, I’ve always thought that Ray and David Bowie had something in common by singing in their English accents, unlike so many who adopted an American accent while singing about and also celebrating the sights and sounds of everyday life here. Other artists who would end up competing with them for chart places were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, the Animals, Them, the Who, Small Faces and many more. So, with all that as a background, it was a real pleasure to visit The Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End one evening last week to see Sunny Afternoon, the multiaward winning, feel-good musical which is based on the music of The Kinks. Life wasn’t always smooth for the Londoners. Having got into a dispute with America’s musicians’ federation, they were banned from touring in the US for 4 years, which cost them millions, and the on- and off-stage infighting between Ray and Dave often meant an edgy, tense relationship. The Kinks’ extraordinary story, which unfolds in Sunny Afternoon, is a must-see. More than just a cavalcade of some great hits, it’s a show which is both enlightening and entertaining in equal measure and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves the 60s and remembers the Kinks’ contribution with affection.

The Dubious Magic of Dreams Five in the morning. From mist-powdered bough A black cap delivers the tunes of a flute The blade and the leaf are searching for light As the sun and the moon are still in dispute Lost in a circle of nonsense and hope A curious witness to unfinished scenes Unaware of the magic outside I am wrapped in the dubious magic of dreams Flitting to venues I think I should know But never the joy of belonging to one Lookalike faces evolve and emerge Through crystalline cobwebs subconsciously spun Fruitless the search for reasons within So how to behold the slumbering game When heroes and villains are sharing my bed When hazy encounters are stung on my brain? I open my eyes. Returned to the ground The substitute world is blinded by sight Senses that drink in the storm of the day Dissolve and mutate in the calm of the night Dreams bearing gifts are diamonds of time Guilt-haunted nightmares - never discussed But what of the spirits that wander the void? Do we visit them or do they visit us?

GARDENING M AT T E R S

Gosh, April already, where has the time gone? Maybe it’s my age, but it really does seem to zoom by in a way it never did when I was little. Depressing thought...anyway, let’s have a butcher’s at the Latin words used to describe the leaf shape of plants... When naming a plant, one of the most obvious aspects to choose is the shape of its leaves, and the name will usually incorporate the suffix folius/folia/folium, or sometimes phyllus, to show that it’s the leaf that the name refers to and not the flower, for example. So, grandifolius refers to large leaves, as does macrophyllus, and examples of these are Euonymus grandifolius and Aster macrophyllus. The number of leaves the plant has can also be indicated: for example, anything with diphyllus in the name will be two-leaved, such as Penstemon diphyllus, and plants with pentaphyllus will be five-leaved, as in Hibiscus pentaphyllus. And anything with millefolium will have many leaves, eg Achillea millefolium, a couple of its other names being ‘hundred-leaved grass’ and ‘thousand-leaf ’. Many specific names refer simply to a shape: eg palmatum will tell you that the leaves of the plant are palmate, or like fingers radiating from the palm of a hand. A very well-known example of this is Acer palmatum, the Japanese maple. Or maybe one of the first details noticed is the outline shape of the leaves. Some are very distinctive, such as those with round leaves, rotundifolia, as in Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’, a cherry laurel used for hedging. The name shows that its leaves will produce a dense hedge, which will maintain privacy. Or latifolia, meaning broad-leaved, as in Campanula

latifolia, a clump-forming perennial with oval leaves. Others are linear in shape, and will include the word linearis, such as Callistemon linearis, the narrow-leaved bottlebrush, or Yucca linearis. Rather than its overall shape, it may be the margins of the leaf which are its most distinctive feature. Dentatus indicates that the plant has a toothed margin – eg Ceanothus dentatus and Lavandula dentata - or it may indicate that the leaf has the appearance of a tooth, as in Hedera colchica Dentata, a fast-growing ivy with leathery leaves in the shape of a canine tooth. Plants whose leaves have wavy margins might carry the specific name sinuatus, as in Alnus sinuatus, an alder native to Alaska. The tips and base of the leaves may also be distinguishing features. Plants with emarginatus in their names will have leaves with a notch at the top, as in Cotoneaster emarginatus and Prunus emarginatus. If the base is heartshaped, you will see the word cordata, as in Houttuynia cordata, or Tilia cordata, the linden or lime tree. There’s also pinnata, where the plant has pinnate leaves, ie the leaflets are arranged in pairs up the stem, examples being Dahlia pinnata, Lavandula pinnata and Santolina pinnata, the cotton lavender. And now I’ve run out of space, so I will leave you till next time...and overall plant shape, huzzaaaahhh.

Queen Mary 2 The Statue of Liberty, highlighted by a shaft of dawn sunlight against a backdrop of New York’s spectacular silhouetted skyscraper lights, was the greeting icon as Queen Mary 2 sailed majestically towards landfall after a week-long crossing of the Atlantic from her UK base in Southampton.

Despite a night’s farewell partying until 2am, my and my wife Delia’s 4.30am awakening by the butler tending our Queen’s Grill stateroom, was boosted by the anticipation of being welcomed by the skylined iconic figure towering over New York harbour, America’s gateway. Like standing beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, eyeing Japan’s snowcapped Mount Fuji from the cosy comfort of the Bullet Train or visiting the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, as if beckoning, offers untold promise of new experiences. It was a scene described to me years ago by my grandfather who was Third Engineer on the original Queen Mary...that and his tales of revelling and cocktailpartying with movie legends such as Erroll Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, David Niven, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. A summons to New York by my publisher was the perfect opportunity

for me to realise a lifetime’s ambition and follow in the footsteps - or rather the ocean wake - of my grandfather and sample ultimate style on the go. And, believe me, the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest, widest, tallest liner ever built, exemplifies the highest grade possible of totally pleasurable life on the ocean waves. I reckoned she would be big, but even my wildest imaginings fell far short of actuality when I left the reception zone at Southampton and was confronted by the Queen, towering as high as a 23-storey building, 200 feet above the waterline and stretching 1,130 feet long. My amazement rarely faltered over the following eight days at sea in this 150,000 tonner which, with its Rolls Royce units, equivalent to 115,328HP, and stabilizers, made such lightwork of three days of riding gale force eight waves that it barely stirred a ripple in our pre-dinner bubbly. For those who worry about sea-

sickness, the worst the notorious Atlantic can throw at a ship like the QM2 is little more than a mere disturbance without discomfort easily dealt with and levelled out. And that brings me to another worthy aspect : the exquisite dining. Every night was a black tie and cocktail dress event for couples who revelled in the formality and festooned themselves in finery worthy of any red carpet showpiece gala. If you had forgotten to fill your Vuittons with the necessary evening apparel, there was a full range of the poshest formal wear available for hire. Feasting in the 1,347-seater Britannia Restaurant, an elegant dinery stretching the width of the ship, three decks high - and with a vast staircase, the grandest of entrances - was the perfect setting for some show-offery. Talking about showing off, Trophy Wife Delia and I were invited ahead of nearly 2,000 fellow passengers to dine exclusively with the captain, Kevin Oprey, at his table, along with

tenor Jonathan Ansell, starring on more than two million albums, and the top of the bill in the QM’s tiered 1094-seater theatre. The delights did not end there. I found myself heading daily to the classy bows-end pianobar Commodore Club to meet up with new-found friends.

Ritz-Carlton Hotel opposite Central Park and a casual stroll away from Fifth Avenue and Times Square. And our fussed-over luxury lifestyle starts all over again. Not since I was last in New York, when I arrived by Concorde from Paris, had I been fortunate enough to sample the high life unique to this vibrant metropolis, like the tasty cuisine in the uppercrust diner, the Auden Bistro, in the Ritz-Carlton. And in between, the down-to-earth value-for-money warmly welcoming Italian family restaurant Antica Bottega del Vino, a five minute stroll away from the hotel’s front door to its pavement terrace. I was very pleased to see that the place had not really changed since my last visit. My four days in New York passed in a flash and I would have eagerly made a leisurely return to London aboard the Queen Mary 2. But sadly, an urgent diary date in Cobham had me flying home. Ah well, it was very nice while it lasted... By Ted Macauley

n 7 February 1964, an advertisement appeared in The Times: “Young people over 18. See Europe in a double-decker bus. 25 July - 16 Aug. 6 countries. £28. Probably less. Phone POP 1841.” 22-year-old Tim Lewis came up with the idea and bought an old London Transport bus for £400. Actually, it was Cliff Richard in his film Summer Holiday who came up with the idea! On Saturday, 25 July, it left Twickenham with 23 girls and 17 boys on board - students from across Britain on a 2,000 mile, 3 week camping holiday across Europe. As dream holidays go, one that involves camping with a bunch of strangers and spending 3 weeks seeing Europe from inside an old bus that is hot, slow and as noisy as a steam kettle may not be everyone’s idea of the trip of a lifetime. But wind the clock back to ‘swinging’ 1964, and make that vehicle a gleaming red double-decker bus, still resplendent in London Transport livery, and everything changes. It was a trip that somehow captured the spirit of the age. The bus also attracted much press attention and

public curiosity. We’d stop at a garage to fill up with diesel, and a French TV film-crew would appear. In Paris, local press photographers insisted that we drive round and round the Arc de Triomphe in heavy traffic to get the perfect shot for their newspapers. In 1965, we formed the Double-Decker Club (DDC) and more holidays followed throughout the 60s. “Aside from the inevitable punctures, our biggest problem was low bridges. We’d even go down a country lane to avoid one. In mid-France, we were going through a vineyard when suddenly a group of French labourers working in the fields stopped working and started waving at us as if we’d come to liberate them. It was really quite emotional.” “Yes, it was all a bit hippyish and these were, of course, the groovy days of long hair, mini-skirts, psychedelic rock and free love. But the holidays themselves weren’t in any sense salacious, they were just immense fun, and many of the friendships that were made have lasted half a lifetime”. We have now organised a nostalgic DDC reunion in Twickenham on 16 April. For more details, email: ddc.alan@yahoo.co.uk

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

WHEN

BUYING

When buying a computer or laptop, there is a whole heap of jargon that people throw at you, expecting you to know what they are talking about - SSDs, RAM, MHz, wifi, HDMI and so it goes on. We have always felt that this is a very rude way to treat your fellow man, so yes, we can talk jargon with you, but we can also talk in finest English to ensure your needs are best met. There are a few pointers that you might appreciate knowing before you buy your new machine. The key components: The processor or the CPU - the engine that powers the PC. It is advisable to buy the best that you can, as CPUs are costly items and are not efficient to change or upgrade at a later stage. For the basis of a good allround home machine, we would usually advise either an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU. There are model variations within these CPUs, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Memory or RAM - the more the better, but this can often be retro-fitted. 4Gb of RAM is considered a minimum; going beyond 8Gb is often unnecessary. We have just started building machines with the latest, fastest DDR4 memory, which will move the boundaries on computers’ performance for years to come. Hard drives - the conventional mechanical hard drives have been using the same technology for around 20

A

COMPUTER

years. They are very economical, have huge storage capacity, but can be slow. Upgrade to a solid state hard drive (SSD), and the performance is phenomenal: they work at 15-20 times faster than the mechanical drives, they are more reliable (as they have no moving parts), but they cost more and have less storage capacity than the older type of hard drives. A great solution is to have both in a machine. The SSD runs the operating system and programs and the mechanical drive stores your data. Graphics cards - game players, photo and video editors and graphics users are better served by having a dedicated graphics card installed, which in some cases can cost as much as the computer. In most cases, using the onboard graphics is sufficient, and should you wish to upgrade the graphics, this can sometimes be added in a PC retrospectively, but unfortunately not in a laptop. Operating system - Windows is the dominant system here, and the versions currently available are Windows 7, 8 and 10. The free-of-charge upgrade to Windows 10 will still be available until June/July this year. Windows 7 will still be supported until 2020 if you would like to stick with a long-established favourite. We would recommend Windows 10 for home machines, as it works in a very efficient manner.

PLAY LAWN BOWLS FOR FREE

Following the success of last year’s Open Days, Cobham Bowling Club is holding two more this year on Monday 25th April and Saturday 14th May. So why not take this chance to try out Lawn Bowls for free? The Club will supply the equipment and coaching, all you need to do is wear flat shoes or trainers. The start time is 2 o’clock, but don’t worry if you are a little late, as we will be there all afternoon. The Club is located in Lushington Drive in Cobham KT11 2AY, next to the Recreation Ground, and the entrance is by the tennis courts. There is no need to book, just turn up on either day. If you do require any further information, please phone Joy 01932 880038 or Heather 020 8287 6382 or look on our website, www.cobhambowlingclub.co.uk. The roots of the Club go back to 1920 when a green was established on the playing fields behind the Antelope Pub (long gone) in Portsmouth Road. In 1932, the

Club moved to its present site by the Recreation Ground. In 1996, a new clubhouse was built and short mat bowls was introduced. This is a great advantage to the Club, as it means members can bowl all year round. The image that bowls is only for the elderly is untrue. It is suitable for all ages and both sexes. An eighty year old can play an eighteen year old on equal terms – a rarity in sport. So, come along and give it a try without any obligation. Even if you don’t see yourself as particularly sporty, you might surprise yourself! Don’t worry about coming alone, there will be club members to welcome you and show you the basics of this fun game. Finally, a bit of film trivia on bowls. Only two movies have ever been made about bowls. The most recent was Blackball (2003), directed by the late Mel Smith, but was not his finest moment! If only James Bond had played Goldfinger at bowls and not golf, who knows what it would have done for our sport!

After a series of bloody civil wars, King Charles had been executed and Oliver Cromwell had taken his place as Lord Protector. It was a time when the world seemed to have been turned upside down. Gerrard Winstanley, a Lancastrian by birth, came to Cobham in about 1646 after experiencing severe financial difficulties. By 1649, he was living with friends and earning a living by herding cattle on the local commons. He experienced a time of intense soul-searching and believed God spoke to him one day when he was in a trance. His commission was to “Work together, eat bread together & declare this all abroad.” To fulfil this apparent divine commission, Winstanley gathered about him a small group of followers who became known as the Diggers. They set about clearing and planting the common land on the Cobham side of St George’s Hill. This brought them into conflict with the Lord of the Manor who actually owned the land, as well as with some of the manorial tenants who saw their rights in the commons being threatened. A petition was sent to Lord Fairfax, the Commander in Chief of the Army, who eventually sent down a troop of horseman to investigate what was going on. There were

exaggerated claims that the Diggers “doe threaten to pull downe and level all parke pales, and lay oen, and intend to plant there very shortly. They give out that they will bee four or five thousand within 10 dayes.” In fact, the Diggers never numbered more than a few dozen. However, they were deemed a threat to the status quo and forced to leave St George’s Hill. They transferred their action to the Little Heath in Cobham but immediately incurred the wrath of the Lord of Manor, Parson John Platt of West Horsley. Eventually, the Diggers were dispersed by force in Easter 1650. However, their legacy was deemed to live on through the printed pamphlets of Winstanley. In the early years of the last century, his writing gave inspiration to the founders of the Russian Soviet State, and Winstanley is now commemorated on a memorial in Moscow. In this country, Winstanley continues to be an inspiration to many radical groups, such as the “The Land Is Ours”. He is hailed as the father of English Socialism. Books continue to be written about him and this episode. One of the leading scholars of this movement was Dr John Gurney of Newcastle University whose book ‘Brave Community’ is a wonderfully detailed study of the Cobham area in the 17th century. Sadly, John died at the end of 2014 and his life and work is to be celebrated at event in St Andrew’s Church, Cobham, on 21st May, when the main speaker will be the popular historian, Michael Wood.

T

he motor-mad fraternity is about to be wooed by a handsome newcomer, or to be more accurate, an updated and uprated version of a long-standing legend. So, stand back and admire Volvo’s latest desirable stunner, the XC90, and if you are looking for sheer value for money, dig out the cheque book. NOW!! This re-booted seven-seater family wagon is a surefire winner on the hugely competitive SUV battlefront, following on in fresh form from its beloved predecessor which first graced the roads 12 years ago. And the likes of rivals BMW X5, the Audi Q7 and yes, even the immaculate Range Rover, are in danger of being overshadowed by this kingpin car with its five-star lustre. A harmony of great looks and sumptuously elegant style allied to absolutely spacious comfort, safety and performance are guarantees of another formidable market run for

the Scandanavian manufacturers. Unlike some opposing SUVs, the three rows of fulsome seating capable of coping with seven long-legged adults are Business Class, bordering on First, and with the sensibly situated sideways-on engine cockpit, room is extensive. As a family transporter, it could not be better. The first two rows have five seats that all recline and slide, and the third row is more than adequate for teenage restlessness.Behind all of that is a boot big enough to swallow up all the kit you and the kids would want to carry away on holiday. The 2.0-litre, four cylinder engine and four-wheel drive all add up to admirable refinement and driving ease, with eight automatic gears to smooth you and yours along motorways and down wiggly country lanes with equal agility. The whole plot is almost five metres long, so Volvo, mindful of parking problems and rear-viewing for space, have fitted a park-assist system that guides you safely into your tight target gap.

And just in case you fail to notice an invasive cyclist or a road-crossing pedestrian, mobile pressed to ear and absent-mindedly failing to see you coming, there’s an auto-brake that detects them and any other vehicles and stops you in your tracks. The drivers’ eye view in a wholly wow-factor interior, all glorious leather and grainy woodwork, is just the job, and all the on-board functions are controlled from a nineinch tablet touch-screen set-up that dominates the centre dash. And you need only wag and wave a finger, gloved even, near the screen to operate all sorts of services, such as the cute infotainment system, satnav, climate control and all manner of jam-packed technology. I have to say the entire experience, taking in short or long journeys alike, in town or out, is a real treat in a versatile all-rounder of upper-class style. Specification: the Volvo D5 Inscription. 2.0-litre. BHP 228. Top speed 137mph. 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. Mpg 48.7. Price £50,685.
