22 Welcome With Rose Gin we wanted to create true ‘bottles for life’. They are

distinctive, beautiful and too good to simply be discarded or recycled. We have designed them to be reused and repurposed over and over again.

To help facilitate our ‘bottles for life’ concept we offer refill pouches so that the bottles can be topped up. By removing our unique seal and

spring pull you create an attractive Gin decanter that will last a lifetime.

The different components of the bottle have been carefully considered, the glass stopper, the removable liquid seal, our unique ‘Spring Pull’ combine to give endless options.

Shipping and packaging create their own issues: The current standard of cheap, plastic bubble wrap and plastic inflated pillows comes at a great

Welcome to our Easter issue! How lovely to have a long weekend to look forward to at the end of this month. Let’s hope by the time it comes around the sun will shine for us all! The new Cherry Trees planted last year on the green, near The Tilt are looking so pretty; Spring is really here! And so good to see that they are doing so well, already. Great work Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust! We have lots of great news and info packed into this issue of Look Local, including news about a lovely children’s book by local author Christine Spooner on page 24. We wish Christine every success with Hedgy the hedgehog! I was delighted to hear from Cobham resident Catherine Webster recently regarding a new & delicious Rose Gin that her friend is producing; take a look at page 22 to read all about it ! News also about the new Oxshott village sign is included this month, the formal inauguration ceremony being in May, see within for more info. And finally this month, we have a super duper competition for all you motor heads out there! Courtesy of Mr Ted McCauley, our Look Local motor correspondent! A very beautiful book is up for grabs so remember, you’ve got to be in it, to win it! Good Luck to all who enter! Wishing you all a great month, until next time....

Gardening Matters S UM M ER P L A N TI NG

And lo, it came to pass that April was upon us and the need to think of summer bedding became apparent. Here are some ideas for planting. Alstromeria and hardy lilies - a long flowering season, and a lot will survive Arctic conditions. Need a sunny spot with good drainage but many won’t tolerate lime. Some varieties are heavily perfumed, eg. Stargazer. Susceptible to lily beetle, a bright red beetle which you have permission to stamp on. Gladioli - 4 categories: a) large stately flowers which need staking; b) shorter varieties (primulinus) with hooded petals; c) butterfly varieties, slightly bigger than miniatures, with blotches on the throats of the flowers; d) true miniatures, to be planted in little groups at the front of the border. Variety of colours but all prefer sunny, well-drained, fertile soil. Not completely hardy and need planting 4-6ins. deep in March, with some horticultural sand in the hole to aid drainage. Campanula - very many varieties, like sun/semi-shade and moisture-retentive soil. C.glomerata ‘Superba’ has a large globe of flower. Verbascum - height makes it ideal for right in the herbaceous border. Huge variety of colours and foliage is mostly hairy/silvery/grey and drought-resistant - indeed, it doesn’t like a lot of rain. Needs a hot, open, sunny spot in well-drained soil. Foxglove - hardy with spikes of poisonous flowers up to 3-4ft. Self-supporting, prefers semi-shade. Variety of

colours. Easy to propagate by seed, but allow 2 years. Grow wild foxglove - digitalis purpurea - for a natural look: it will just get on with growing. Hollyhock - hardy, with spikes of flower. Grow up against a house wall to bake in well-drained soil. Can grow to 5-7 ft, a variety of colours. Rust, a powdery brown residue on the underside of leaves, will finish off a hollyhock, so buy rust-resistant varieties. If you discover rust, pull the plant up and burn it to prevent it spreading. Delphinium - needs well-prepared ground, individual stakes and a lot of feeding with tomato fertiliser as summer progresses. As soon as flowering is over, cut out the flower stalk completely, re-feed and there may be a 2nd flush of colour. Very tall, back of border material. Antirrhinum (snapdragon) - half-hardy, comes in a variety of colours and likes full sun. Dwarf varieties are 6 ins., full size 24 ins. Will self-seed. Larkspur and lupin - will self-seed. Plant larkspur in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, and lupin in full sun in well-drained, alkaline, moisture-retentive soil. Beware, lupin doesn’t like being moved. Penstemon - a variety of colours for front of border. Some tiny ones are ideal for rockeries. Good leaf cover and delicate flower. Full sun, fertile, well-drained soil. Cut back hard in early spring if it becomes too leggy. There, that’s just a selection. Also lovely are baptisia, monarda, sidalcea and zinnia (full sun), and phlox (semishade), but I’ve run out of space now. Get planting, you know you want to. |

Hannah Lamiroy has always been concerned with the food she puts into her body, but realised she was less aware of what was in the alcohol she was drinking! So driven by a passion to ‘clean up alcohol’, she set out to make the cleanest, purest, most delicious spirits possible; Hannah started distilling in her kitchen in Cornwall, playing with ideas, and finally coming up with her first product, an Organic Rose Gin. Like many of you I’m sure, I have enjoy the re-birth/ re-invented G&T; but it is so refreshing to discover this new Organic Rose Gin. I already buy Organic food and Organic Wine, but up to this point, had not found an Organic Gin option. Fully certified organic, distilled in copper pots in Cornwall, it changes from golden amber to a beautiful pink when mixed with tonic. As the Gin is made with fresh David Austin roses, you TINKTURE.COM

get the true delicate nature of the rose coming through, rather than an overpowering artificial sweetness associated with some rosewater based products. No artificial sweeteners, favours, colours, chemicals, concentrates or preservatives all certainly add to the appeal and the flavour. I tried a glass of Hannah’s Rose Gin for myself recently and it really is very good indeed. Apart from the gorgeous bottle and the delicate pink colour, the taste is truly heavenly! The flavours are subtle and deliciously refreshing. Look Local highly recommend Tinkture Organic Rose Gin! It comes in 2L, 1L, 500ml, and 50ml sizes. The 50ml little guys are gorgeous for weddings and party favours! There are also refill pouches, so you can use the stunning bottles over and over again. Royal Horticultural Society celebrates Edible Britain for National Gardening Week Encouraging everyone to grow-your-own is the theme of this year’s National Gardening Week (29 April–5 May 2019)

© RHS Jason Ingram

The nation’s biggest celebration of gardening returns for 2019 from Monday 29 April to Sunday 5 May 2019 as the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) encourages everyone to get involved in grow-your-own. The theme for this year is Edible Britain, with the RHS calling on gardeners up and down the country to share their love of home-grown produce. In 2019, the RHS hopes even more people will get involved and has created a brand new website so people can find out how to take part: www.rhs.org.uk/ nationalgardeningweek. Registration is now open for this year’s event, with everyone invited to upload their events and activities to the website and discover hints and tips for taking part. For this year’s Edible Britain theme, the RHS will aim to demonstrate that everyone has space to grow something delicious to eat, whether it’s a single pot of herbs on the windowsill or an allotment overflowing with courgettes and potatoes. RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter says, “After it was reported earlier this month that the RHS has seen sales of fruit and vegetable seeds outstrip flowers at its Plant Centres over the last year, it’s clear that people are keen to reconnect with where their food comes from. We’re supporting this burgeoning interest by encouraging garden centres, nurseries, clubs, societies and other organisations

to showcase their edible expertise, as well as highlighting grow-your-own at our RHS Gardens and Flower Shows.” Guy offers the following top tips to those who are wondering what they can grow this National Gardening Week: · There is still time to sow seeds of hardy plants like carrots, coriander, beetroot and parsley. In fact, clay soils may not be dry and warm enough for good results until this time. · Sowings of salads such as lettuce and radishes, and peas and broad beans, can be made now, and sow again every three weeks until early July for a continuous supply. · Cold-sensitive but quick-growing plants such as basil, courgettes, French beans, runner beans and sweetcorn can be sown indoors now for planting out in a month’s time (six weeks in the north). · Although it is too late to sow slow-growing tender plants such as aubergines, chilli peppers, sweet peppers and tomatoes, they are widely are widely offered as potted plants: buy them now to grow on in greenhouses, and set them out later when the risk of frost has passed. For more ideas and advice on what to grow and how to grow it, see the National Gardening Week website. For further info, visit www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley. Scams and Password protection... the importance of protecting your passwords

There are reports almost daily of data breaches and significant losses of users’ credentials from large, reputable businesses like hotel chains, airlines and the like. Recent companies to acknowledge they have been compromised are: MyFitnessPal had 143 Million account details breached or stolen MyHeritage reported 91 Million records taken MySpace had 359 Million accounts hacked Linkedin had 164 Million accounts breached Adobe had 152 Million accounts stolen Facebook had 87 Million records breached Now you might, correctly, say “why does it matter that someone has your MyFitnessPal account details?” In isolation it may not be very significant, but you may have stored your credit or bankers details on their system, and more significantly they will have your user name and password. If the same crooks, then breached, say, your Adobe account information, they might see that your account user name and password have similarities, which they then may go try and login to, say, Amazon as you, and start buying items for delivery to their locations. This isn’t scare-mongering, it is reality What can you do to protect yourself? There is a useful website named www.haveibeenpwned.com. By putting in your email address it will tell you how many recorded breaches of your email address have been recorded. If you try this random email address johnsmith@hotmail.com, it will tell you it has been compromised on 92 occasions and where this compromise came from If you have been pwned what can you do? Change your email password twice in a week, and ensure your new password is not similar to the old one, ensure it has numbers, upper, lower case letters, and punctuation symbols in it. Try to have a different password for your major activities like email, shopping websites, finance websites. Personally, I have used a password storing program for years called Ascendo DataVault, it will synchronise with your smart phone, PC, Mac and tablets. In the program I never record the actual password, obviously this is personal preference, I might have password “A” being Apple, “B” being Banana, then I might add my work postcode, making my password Bwork? actually becoming “BananaKT227AW?” To check out how secure your new password is you could put it into www.howsecureismypassword.net, the above example would take a computer 415Million years to crack! As part of our Total Care Support package we get asked to help recover users accounts details where their accounts have been hacked. In most cases we are successful, but can’t be guaranteed.

HOME WANTED! Tabby Cat

Our lovely TabbyCat had been a wandering nomad for many years. He was fed by an elderly lady, who has gone into a nursing home, but otherwise had had no contact with humans. We think he was a domestic kitten who went wandering off when he reached maturity and then lived rough until we took him into care. He is very friendly, loving, content, enjoys cuddles and, in fact, falls asleep in your lap! He also loves catnip toys, he really enjoys his food and loves Dreamies! TabbyCat is about 10 years old, neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and in good health. He could possibly live with another, older, cat but not with dogs or young children. POEM CORNER A Mum’s Lament (Written for a friend who was having a problem!)

For much too long we’ve been ignored So I want to suggest a new award For those hard-pressed Mums with a child like mine Who battle to get her to the Pool on time. Every Saturday morning, the same routine, I run out of patience, I want to scream. “Time to get up!” - “I’ve an awful head. Can’t I stay a bit longer in bed? I’ve cramp in my toe, my throat feels sore!” Whatever she says, I’ve heard it before. “My costume’s at school, there’s a tear in my hat, The strap on my goggles’ been chewed by the cat”. I nag and cajole, I shout myself hoarse To get her to swimming-which she loves of course. We zoom to the Centre, I whisper, “Have fun!” I’m a physical wreck and my day’s not begun. I sometimes wonder if it’s worth all the hassle For every week we have the same battle, But at special events and gala nights When they line up in their diagonal stripes, Poised to take off at the sound of the gun There’s no greater fan than her proud ‘old’ Mum!!

Book Reviews April ‘Now We Shall Be Entirely Free’ by by Andrew Miller (Hardback, £18.99) From the opening sentences of this novel the reader is gripped. In 1809 a wounded man, Lacroix, is delivered to a house in Somerset and in Spain an English corporal and a Spanish cavalry officer are sent to despatch him. Lacroix decides to hide and he makes for the Hebrides. Andrew Miller writes so well – he wonderfully conveys emotion and creates believable complex characters. This is part thriller, part love story and the whole is underscored with the tension of the pursued and the pursuer.

‘The Wolf and the Watchman’ by Niklas Natt och Dag (Hardback, £12.99) This is a dark and disturbing read but absolutely riveting! In Stockholm in 1793 a limbless torso is found in a body of water called ‘The Larder’. Mickel Cardell, the watchman with a wooden arm and Cecil Winge, a brilliant lawyer turned investigator who is dying of consumption, are enjoined to find the perpetrator. Together they plumb the depths of the city as they carry out their investigation. Stockholm springs to life as they trudge through the pubs, inns and alleyways of the city. This novel reminds me of ‘The Name of the Rose’ especially in the bond forged between Mickel (the watchman) and Cecil (the wolf ).

‘Arabia’ by Levison Wood (Hardback, £25.00) His best book yet. Levison Wood’s 5000 mile journey through 13 countries of the Arabian Peninsula is a fascinating exploration of the extremes and beauties of the landscape. It’s also a skilful examination of the subtleties and contradictions of the region’s history and contemporary politics. Wood navigates the physical dangers of warzones and militarised borders. He gains insights into the myriad perspectives not heard in the media by living and travelling with people from different communities, and shares the stories of his travels with honesty. .

“Modifying the

Electronics

of Modern Classic Cars“ COMPETITION BY TED MACAULEY

Every now and then a specialised book to treasure, either for entertainment or instruction, or both, finds its way into our midst and guarantees itself a welcome and prominent place in our display of volumes. And that is the case with Veloce’s superb publication entitled “Modifying the Electronics of Modern Classic Cars”. An impressive paperback of 256 pages and ten chapters, destined to clear up any worries and problems you might suffer if you are determined to pep up and revive your slightly older car’s performance with a level

of expertise passed on from a veritable star of the auto world, Julian Edgar. He offers the complete, step by step , easy-to-follow guide to advancements and improvements to 1990s and 2000s cars, that even an electronic dunce like me find comfortable to follow. It is typically, a finely tuned representative of the rather excellent automotive book publisher, Veloce in their vast list of publications, covering all aspects of motoring and featuring just about every make of car. The latest, aimed specifically at their WorkshopPro (IWorkshopPro) Series, will be a crucial accompaniment to the enthusiast who opts to spend a good deal of time fiddling with his cars in his home workshop and looking for improvements in performance and cutting the running costs. Author Edgar is just about as reliable as they come when it comes down to explaining how to set about giving your prized possession a new lease of life. He explains; ”I have been mechanically modifying my road cars for about 35 years now, doing it first as an enthusiast and then, as a journalist, writing about those modifications. “I’ve got a home workshop with a lathe, mill, bandsaw, welders and loads of other equipment. And it is my belief that the electronic modification of cars beats mechanical modes hands-down for cheapness, ease of work and results. “ And since I consider fuel economy an aspect of performance, I have taken a look at how you can improve it.. For example fitting a dashboard indicator that will allow you to drive more fuel-efficiently, running lean cruise with programmable engine management.”

So there it is: fortyquids-worth of quality instructive upgrading information. And I shall make the book yours for free if you can answer following:

Oxshott Village Sign Latest News

The Oxshott Village Sign Society is delighted to report that our beautiful traditional village sign recently went into production and should be completed by the end of March or early April. Last year, following visits to six different forges and a subsequent comparison of their experience, skill and prices, we appointed Black Forge Arts in Kent to carry out the work. Black Forge has over 25 years experience specialising

in designing and producing custom-made items such as signs, weathervanes, iron forgework (like gates and railings), metal artworks and even barbecues! They exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show in May every year. They also made Cobham’s delightful village sign. They are a small, family-run business whose forge is set deep in the Kent countryside; they’re passionate about the work they do and have a particular expertise in designing and making village signs. The Oxshott sign is in safe hands! Thanks to the draughtsmanship skills of our winning designer, Bob Jones, Black Forge only needed to tweak his drawings marginally to ensure that they could be translated onto the cold rolled steel that’s being used to make our sign. Bearing in mind that the sign is intended to be a proud focus for the community for generations to come, it was important that the materials used are of the highest quality, and therefore long-lasting. When completed, the metal part of the sign will be over 1.5 metres tall and over a metre wide, and this will be mounted on top of a French oak post measuring over 3 metres above the ground. It is currently planned to hold the formal Inauguration Ceremony on Friday 10th May, to which the community is invited. Nearer the time, please check either our website www. oxshottvillagesign.com or our social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter) for details concerning the event and to ensure there is no change to the date. Garsons ‘tests the water’ with its latest ecological initiative

Garsons outdoor leisure supervisor Christian Darby shows off the eco range of swimwear now available.

Garsons of Esher is one of the first shops in the country to stock a range of ecological swimwear made from abandoned fishing nets rescued from the oceans. The garden centre now has 12 different lines of the Ecolast swimwear from Zoggs which began life as waste material harmful to marine life. “It is hard to imagine that this elegant range of swimwear started out as ghost fishing lines, old carpet and plastic waste,” says outdoor leisure supervisor Christian Darby. “It fits in perfectly with the Garsons ethos of reuse, recycle and reduce.” The waste material is rescued from the sea and saved from landfill through nationwide initiatives such as The Econyl Reclaiming Programme and is converted into regenerated nylon.

50 Looklocal Magazine - April 2019

Available at Garsons in adult and children’s designs, the Ecolast material, a combination of 78% Econyl yarn and 22% Lycra, is said to be 15 times more resilient to chlorine than standard swimwear fabrics. “As a family of growers, we know exactly how important it is to respect and protect our environment for future generations,” says Ben Thompson, Garsons director. “The idea of having swimwear made from discarded fishing nets which are harming marine life shows that something wonderful can come out of a negative and we are very proud to be one of the first to stock this range.” For more information visit the Garsons Farm website: www.garsons.co.uk. Cobham Community Garden digs into the new season We’ve started the new season preparing our fruit bushes for a hopefully bumper season. Now we’re sowing seeds and planting out, so come and join the fun. We’re open from 10am to 12 noon Thursdays and Saturdays weekly. We’re back at the Farmers Market from 23rd March, so come and enjoy our preserves and winter veg. Our May 25th stall will be a plant ‘bring and buy’, so think of us when you’re sorting out your seedlings - bring some along and see what else we’ll have. We still need Lead Gardeners - it’s a rewarding job deciding what’s grown where, ordering the seeds, and guiding other volunteers to get the work done. There’s lots of room to be experimental and creative with 3 greenhouses and six big beds!
